Childhood is such a fleeting time. As you watch your kids grow and mature with each passing day, this realization becomes all the more poignant.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise. As soon as you have children, friends and family come forward with the same advice: Enjoy every minute. Before you know it, they’ll be grown. Often though, despite our best intentions, we become so caught up in a whirlwind of responsibilities—work, school, organized activities—that time slips away from us second by second. But it doesn’t always have to be that way. When, almost magically, we can come together at a place as simple and relaxed as Bald Head Island, we finally have a chance to slow down and catch our breath.
Because no bridge connects Bald Head Island to the mainland, you leave your car behind and travel here by passenger ferry or private boat. When you arrive, your pace slows to that of an electric cart, bicycle, or your own two feet. You’ll have the chance to fully appreciate the beauty of the surroundings—quiet beaches, lush maritime forest, winding tidal creeks, and idyllic streetscapes.

In so many ways, time almost feels suspended on Bald Head Island. Vacations here are reminiscent of an earlier era, when families and friends spent lazy summer afternoons lingering by the shore. The island’s East, West and South Beaches stretch for more than a dozen uninterrupted miles, providing a limitless playground for kids of all ages. And simple pleasures, like sandcastle building, still rule the day.
There’s a powerful feeling of safety and security here, and older children in particular enjoy a rare opportunity to run and roam with abandon. With so many wild places to explore, there’s no time to be bored. New adventures await around every bend—paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, hiking, sailing. The list is endless.

Yes, childhood is fleeting. But you can resolve to savor each small moment. To draw out the days a little more. And to connect with each other in a meaningful way in a place like Bald Head Island. Knowing, that one day in the not-too-distant future, you’ll look back and smile.

WIDE BLUE YONDER Vacations are a balancing act between doing and relaxing, and we want to make sure you have plenty of time for both when you visit Bald Head Island. There’s lots to do here whether you’re a kid or kid at heart, adrenaline junkie or afternoon napper, artist or angler, family or solo traveler. Read on to find out all the ways you can play, explore, relax, and be inspired by this place from the
LAND, SEA AND AIR.
BY LAND THE NATURAL, CAR-FREE ENVIRONMENT ON BALD HEAD ISLAND INVITES YOU TO SLOW DOWN, RELAX A LITTLE, AND TAKE NOTE OF THE SURROUNDINGS.
As you’re buzzing around the island in your golf cart or pedaling from one end to the other on your bicycle, you’re immersed in the wildness of this place. Federal Road tunnels through the forest canopy and Bald Head Wynd follows the curves of the coast and undulations of the dunes, introducing you to the island with every turn of your wheels. In the maritime forest, paths wander beneath immense oaks, while along the shore, the beaches beckon for a stroll. Follow that trail, build that sandcastle, and find the perfect balance between relaxing and exploring Bald Head Island at your pace.

FUN & GAMES
S
ince Bald Head Island is car-free, the two preferred modes of transportation are the electric golf cart and the bicycle. As fun as golf carts may be to drive, they can’t beat a good BIKE ride on the island. Exploring the island’s wynds and ways on two wheels gives you a whole new perspective on this place. Both Coastal Urge and Riverside Adventure Company rent bikes by the day and week. Choose from beach cruisers, tandem bikes, fitness bikes, kids’ bikes— with and without training wheels—plus traila-bikes and trailers for the smallest riders in your pack. All those roads where you ride your bike are perfect for other activities, too. Joggers will find they can get in a good long RUN by following the roads or taking to the beach, and Coastal Urge has introduced a new mode of transportation to those roads: longboard skateboards. These hip four-wheelers are easy to RIDE, and if you pair them with a land paddle (think a paddle with a rubber stopper at the end instead of a blade), you can get in quite the workout as you “surf” the roads around the island. Along Federal Road in the maritime forest, you’ll find several trailheads going off into the woods. These trails enter the Bald Head Woods Maritime Forest Preserve and take you past some impressive trees, like the Timmons Oak, one of the largest live oaks on the island. The Bald Head Island Conservancy holds a number of programs that involve a HIKE into the woods or along the creek. On the M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail, a short hike to the hammocks—raised areas of vegetated land in the marsh—will give you spectacular views of the creek and, if you’re quiet enough and still enough, a good look at more fiddler crabs than you can count. haven 29
‘‘
If you’re renting, request a temporary membership in the Bald Head Island Club and Shoals Club, so you can enjoy all the fun the island has to offer. And remember: No trip is complete without taking a Historic Tour or Ghost Walk.
”
At the Bald Head Island Club, they have plenty by way of games. For starters, there’s GOLF, played on a stunning George Cobb-designed course that was recently spruced up by designer Tim Cate. Cate’s work stayed true to Cobb’s layout and design, but breathed new life into the course, making it more natural and fair. Part of Cate’s redesign was to transform 35 acres of rough into areas thick with native grasses and trees. If your swing’s a little rusty, head to the practice range where you can warm up, take a lesson from PGA professionals, or join a clinic and polish up your game. Club rentals and golf shoes are available from the Club Pro Shop if you didn’t bring yours. If golf isn’t your game, you can also enjoy a TENNIS match at the BHI Club. Four courts, each surfaced with MondoTen, a rubberized coating that’s got enough give to be gentle on the knees but doesn’t interfere with your movement or the ball’s spin, are at the disposal of Club members and temporary members. During summer, daily clinics, social activities, private 30
lessons, and programs for kids and adults are available with one of the U.S. Professional Tennis Association staff members. While you’re at the BHI Club, take note of the immaculate CROQUET greenswards where the Bald Head Island Croquet Club plays, practices, and hosts prestigious national and international tournaments. Every Sunday throughout the year, they play Golf Croquet at 10:30 a.m. on the greensward, and from June to September they host Family Croquet, early evening gatherings where you can get a handle on how the game is played. All-white attire is required, so pack accordingly. When you’re ready to cool off, the Bald Head Island Club has a 25-meter POOL that’s open for lap swims first thing in the morning, then opens to everyone for the rest of the day. There’s a slide for kids 10 and under, and a giggle-inducing Splash Pad for kids 12 and under. The oceanfront SHOALS CLUB also offers a spacious swimming pool, along with a baby pool for the little ones.
When you’re ready for a change of pace, round up the family for a little friendly competition on the nearby volleyball or bocce ball courts. Direct access to Cape Fear is also a perk for members and temporary members of the Shoals Club. Just grab a towel, chair and umbrella, and hit the beach. History buffs take note: Bald Head Island is a place so steeped in history and story, you could spend a year here and not learn all there is to know. But you can get a good start by joining up with a HISTORIC TOUR from the Old Baldy Foundation. The tour gives you a glimpse into the history of Bald Head Island, from its first appearance on maps in the 1500s, to the trio of lighthouses that have graced the island, to the development of the island in the 1980s. If you like your history with a little bit of fancy thrown in, join Riverside Adventure’s GHOST WALK , a familyfriendly tour that spins some mighty tall tales about Bald Head Island’s legends and lore.

ald Head Island may be a playground for adults, but for kids it’s a veritable amusement park. Between the beach; the programming at the Conservancy, Shoals Club and Bald Head Island Club; and art camps, there’s so much happening they could spend an entire summer here and not do it all.
At ALL ABOUT ART, the island’s much-loved art gallery, any number of classes and camps will have kids tapping into their creativity to make keepsakes of their own. In Under the Sea, they’ll create mermaids, whales, crabs and sand dollars; in Art Works, they’ll explore different mediums and methods of making art; and in Glazed Over, kids will create ceramics to take home. And that’s just the tip of the All About Art iceberg. There are other programs—like Wine-ing About Art—geared toward grown-ups, too. Riverside Adventure Company hosts kids’ events galore. New this year is the high-flying WHEELS ON FIRE bicycle adventure camp for kids ages 5-13.

hen it comes to getting close to nature, no one can compete with the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Their tours, bird-watching expeditions, beach walks and citizen scientist programs get adults and kids out into the woods and wilds of Bald Head Island in a myriad of novel ways. BALD HEAD AFTER DARK introduces the nocturnal creatures of the island, including frogs, bats, alligators and bioluminescent plankton. After a presentation, you’ll join a naturalist on a walk to see what nighttime critters you can spot. Every season of the year, Bald Head Island is home to an impressive array of birds—some 244 species in total—and the Conservancy staff members know them by sight and song. Take a BIRDING EXPEDITION and see how many you can find. Binoculars are provided. On Middle Island just above Bald Head, the Conservancy cares for the Ibis Lake Sanctuary, a secret spot where ibises congregate around a freshwater pond. The Conservancy takes studying barrier islands seriously, so new programs, like WEATHER OR NOT, are helping visitors learn about these places and the way wind, waves and elements impact them. In Weather or Not, kids and adults learn about the barrier island climate and how to collect and read weather data, and then build their own model weather station they can use to monitor the weather at their vacation or full-time home.

Riverside hosts a lively FAMILY BINGO NIGHT Wednesday evenings throughout the summer at Will o' The Wisp. And there’s the Sunset Celebration, a party with music, a drum circle, puppet shows, s’mores and games, held weekly during the summer at Beach Access 5. The BALD HEAD ISLAND CONSERVANCY has camps for kids 4-14 all summer. While the preschoolers catch bugs and make crafts, the elementary schoolers get in a kayak and go crabbing and shell collecting. Middle schoolers get involved with the Conservancy’s efforts to care for the island by collecting data, helping with research, planting dune grasses and more. The oceanfront SHOALS CLUB has a calendar full of activities for kids. From Story Time, to the Big Kahuna Splash Competition, to Dive-In Movies, there’s always plenty to do. Summer evenings include Family Flick Night and Kids Night Out, a parent-free evening of fun and games. There are also scavenger hunts, T-shirts to be tie-dyed, and more chances to dance, splash, play and be a kid than you’d believe. The BALD HEAD ISLAND CLUB offers a robust summer camp program, including weekly golf and tennis instruction, daily swimming, arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor games, story time, and plenty of aquatic activities at the pool and Splash Pad.

WHEREVER YOU ARE ON BALD HEAD ISLAND, YOU’RE NEVER FAR FROM THE WATER. In just a few minutes you can be on the marsh, navigating the creeks in a kayak; paddling out into the Atlantic for a surfing lesson; or casting a line for flounder in the surf or drum in the creeks. From a simple float to a sightseeing sail, there are countless ways to experience Bald Head Island from the water.

ou can swim, splash, flip, frolic, dive, and play in the waves to your heart’s content, but there’s more to do at the shore than just go for a swim. We’ve got 14 miles of beach where you can build sandcastles, collect shells, or just watch the clouds float by. And with that much shoreline, there’s a lot of ground to cover. South Beach’s long stretch of sand and often calm water is ideal for beach walks and shelling. Along West Beach, our most protected strand, you’ll find kids playing in the surf. Out on East Beach, the waves are typically wilder and the surfers and boogie boarders love the action. Bring along your favorite longboard or shortboard. Or, if that’s too much trouble, rent a board from the Sail Shop. If you’re new to SURFING, the Sail Shop offers group and private lessons perfect for beginners.
You could also take it easy on the water and go SAILING with the Sail Shop. Their 26’ J80 sailboats, Jive and Joyride, are perfect for a relaxing sail out on the Atlantic or along the inland waters of the Cape Fear River. If you’re interested, you can take sailing lessons on the J80, or kids from 8-13 can try their hand at sailing one of the Optimist Pram sailboats on Bald Head Creek. Hop aboard Eloise, a 1936 Mathews Cabin Cruiser, for a SCENIC CRUISE with Barrier Island Excursions. Tour the Southport waterfront and cruise the Yacht Basin there, then head up the Cape Fear River or Intracoastal Waterway, watching for birds and dolphins the whole way. If you’d like to make your day or evening special, try exploring the Cape Fear River with a half-day excursion, or pack your favorite bottle of wine and some nosh for an enchanting sunset cruise. With the Bald Head Island Conservancy, 34
you can get a taste of nature after dark with a pair of programs that could put you up close and personal with a nesting loggerhead sea turtle. Join Conservancy staff on their nightly patrols with the SEA TURTLE RIDE ALONG, help watch for turtle tracks leading from the waves to the dunes, and call back to base with your findings. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you could see a turtle lay her eggs or witness a nest hatch. The Conservancy also holds TURTLE WALKS for members. These popular outings start at the Barrier Island Study Center and then move to the beach for a little lesson in nighttime ecology. If you’re lucky, your group will head off to watch
a turtle dig her nest and lay her eggs while Conservancy naturalists collect information on the mother turtle, or you may get to see a nest “boil” and hatch, depending on the month. The Bald Head Island Conservancy also helps anglers learn the ins and outs of surf fishing through the THAD WESTER FISHING SCHOOL. Held every September, the Fishing School offers three days of instruction to help you learn how to reel in the big one. Fishing on the island can take many forms, from hiring a charter captain to take you out to the Gulf Stream for a day
of tuna fishing, to simply casting a line into the surf in hopes of hooking dinner. From the surf you can catch flounder, red drum, bluefish, mullet, pompano and Spanish mackerel. If you decide to head OFFSHORE, your guide can pick you up in the harbor and put you on tuna, grouper, mackerel, dolphin, tarpon and even sailfish. Most guides provide licenses and equipment, but if you’re fishing from shore, be sure to bring your own rods and tackle, and be sure to have a valid North Carolina fishing license.
MARSH MECCA
T
he ocean may be beautiful, but something about the marsh invites visitors to explore and admire the twisting creeks and emerald green grass. Through the Bald Head Island Conservancy you can take guided KAYAK or canoe tours with an expert naturalist. These tours are perfect for any age or skill level, and the naturalists will tailor their talk to the level and interests of the group. Expect to see lots of birds—egrets, ibises, herons, kingfishers, ospreys, bald eagles—and maybe even a dolphin or alligator on your tour.
‘‘
Indulge your sense of adventure and get out on the water while you’re on the island, whether by sailboat, cabin cruiser, kayak or paddleboard. Sign up for a turtle walk, crabbing class or fishing school to be living like a local in no time.
”
At the Sail Shop they offer guided trips along Bald Head Creek and Fishing Creek in single and double kayaks. These 90-minute tours are packed with history, stories and wildlife identification, but if you’d rather go out on your own, the Sail Shop is happy to provide you with a kayak or CANOE, life jacket and paddle, and send you on your way. They even carry a few sit-on-top kayaks that you can use in the creek or on the ocean if you’re feeling especially adventurous. Take a STANDUP PADDLEBOARD (SUP) lesson or tour with Coastal Urge for a different way to explore the creeks. Standing atop your paddleboard, which looks like an oversized surfboard, you’ll have a wider view of the marsh and can even see into the reeds and grasses where waterbirds forage for their next meal. You can rent a paddle and paddleboard to head out onto the creeks on your own or join Coastal Urge for a lesson or excursion in the marsh. Stop by the Board Room on Keelson Row in Harbour Village for rentals, excursions and instruction. Anglers will want to take note of the marsh as a place where the FISHING is fine. Speckled trout, grey trout, red drum, spots and flounder inhabit the creeks here, and whether you’re fishing from a dock, boat or kayak, you stand a chance of hooking a beauty. The Bald Head Island Conservancy has a program perfect for families curious about aquatic life in the marsh. By CRABBING— think fishing but with bait only, no hook—and throwing a cast net, you can catch any number of baitfish and blue crabs in the water around the Village Creek Access.

IMAGINE SEEING BALD HEAD ISLAND AS THE BIRDS DO: Old Baldy rises out of the maritime forest, creeks wind
through the lush marsh, and waves endlessly break against the beach and Frying Pan Shoals. You don’t have to imagine it any more; you can get a bird’s-eye-view of Bald Head Island and do more than just admire those Carolina blue skies above.

ith just 108 steps, you can change your perspective on Bald Head Island forever. Those steps are the ones that carry you to the top of OLD BALDY, our iconic lighthouse, commissioned by Thomas Jefferson in 1817 and still standing today. As you climb the stairs inside the lighthouse, you’ll pass six windows revealing the island in bits and pieces, but when you reach the top and ascend into the lanthorn room, you’ll have a panorama of Bald Head Island that will make you pause for just a moment before you pull out your camera. From the winding creeks, to the far-off curve of the ocean horizon, to the broad avenue of maritime forest stretching toward West Beach, the view is one you can’t get anywhere else on the island, and one worth coming back for on every visit. After you descend, take time to look through the SMITH ISLAND MUSEUM OF HISTORY. In the museum, built to look like an 1850s lighthouse keeper’s cottage, you’ll find artifacts revealing the daily duties of a lighthouse keeper, including a heavy woolen uniform, logbook, and tools they used to keep Old Baldy’s light burning brightly. You’ll also find out about Fort Holmes, the Confederate gun battery that once housed 1,100 soldiers, and examine bullets, buttons, and other evidence of their occupation.

With endless miles of beach and an almost ever-present sea breeze, Bald Head Island provides ample opportunities to FLY A KITE. You can bring your own, pick one up from Bullfrog Corner as you pass through Southport, or wait until you arrive on the island and make your way to Riverside Adventure Company, where you’ll find a small but fun selection of fliers you can assemble and have in the air minutes after you hit the beach.

f you liked the view from Old Baldy, how about a view of Old Baldy? HIGH TIDE HELICOPTERS has four tours that will give you sightseeing and photographic opportunities of our coast like no other. Start small with the Lighthouse Tour and take to the air for
a look at Old Baldy and the Oak Island Lighthouse that only the birds enjoy, or step up to the Bald Head Island Tour, which circles the island and takes you over Cape Fear and Frying Pan Shoals for a view of the Shoals Club and The Point that’s breathtaking. Stay on any of Bald Head Island’s beaches long enough and you’ll see a biplane buzz by. That’s SUNCOAST AVIATION, and you can hop in the open cockpit and take a coastal tour in a beautifully refurbished WWII-era WACO UPF-7 biplane. Beaches, lighthouses, sea turtles swimming, and sharks along the shoals are just some of the sights you’ll see as you fly by with the wind in your hair. Both High Tide Helicopters and Suncoast Aviation depart from the Cape Fear Regional Jetport on Oak Island, just a ferry ride and short drive away.

A Dream, Realized A BRIEF HISTORY OF COASTAL URGE AT BALD HEAD ISLAND
What if your family station wagon was a custom golf cart, complete with paddleboards on top and a couple of labs in the back? If you got up with the sun and planned your schedule around the tides? What if, when your youngest child is born, the first place he visits outside your home is the ocean. His earliest memories are of dappled sunlight filtering through live oaks and the breeze on his face while he’s safely in a bike trailer pulled behind his mom or dad’s beach cruiser, the thrum of the tires spinning over bridges and walkways lulling him to sleep.
Jeoffrey and Catherine Nathan both grew up on the water—Jeoffrey in Newport, RI and Catherine in Wilmington, NC. They dreamed of starting a business that would inspire, outfit, and encourage others to enjoy the adventures that abound in the Coastal Carolinas. They opened their first Coastal Urge store in Wilmington in 2008 and got married two weeks later.
“It was a hectic time,” says Jeoffrey. “It started as just us. You came in to shop at our first store and you’d find Cat, me, and our two dogs behind the counter.”
This dream became a reality for two Bald Head Island business owners who fell in love with the island on their first visit.
Today, Coastal Urge customers are served by 50 employees at 6 locations around the coastal Carolinas. The company hosts two paddleboard races yearly—wrapping up the 7th annual Newport SUP Cup in 2015 and the 8th annual Cold Stroke Classic in 2016. Paddlers converge from around the United States to compete and raise money for charity. When you visit Coastal Urge, you’re not just walking in a shop—you’re slipping into a lifestyle. One that promises comfort and style as you live the life you love. Welcome!
A couple of years later they discovered Bald Head Island and decided that it was the perfect spot not only for their business but for starting a family. They moved to the island, opening the first paddleboard rental operation, creating a rental fleet of brand new beach cruisers, and bringing an extensive selection of the premium apparel brands found in their own closets to Island visitors and residents.

Cape Fear Station and the Southern Living Inspired Community Program:

When Southern Living magazine hand-selects candidates for their Inspired Communities designation, they consider the following: D O E S I T E M B R A C E T H E N AT U R A L B E A U T Y OF THE SOUTHERN L ANDSCAPE? D O E S I T D I S P L AY T H E B E S T O F SOUTHERN LIVING INSPIRED ARCHITECTURE? O
n the eastern end of Bald Head Island, in an esteemed community known as Cape Fear Station, they have answered an emphatic yes to each of these questions. Recently, the first home in this Southern Living Inspired Community opened for public tours. FO R M & F U N CT I O N Standing in the living room of the showpiece residence she helped create, interior designer Vicky Serany wistfully imagines its future. As stunning as it is, she doesn’t picture its residents treating it with kid gloves. Instead, she joyfully describes children coming in off the beach with sandy feet and wet swimsuits, dogs bounding in from the yard, and guests helping themselves to drinks and snacks around the center island. “It’s the philosophy of second home design,” she explains. “Rest and relaxation, kids and pets—you mix it all in and maximize your time there together. That’s the thing about second homes: you know you are making memories. It’s a chance to focus on what is important.” Vicky is adamant that, for a vacation home, carefree maintenance is key. “Everything in the house is super durable, basically indestructible.” You’ll find Sunbrella fabrics on the furnishings and shower curtains, quartz countertops in the kitchen, and distressed woods on the floors that only become more attractive with wear. “You can design a beautiful space,” she emphasizes, “but if it doesn’t function well, it’s useless.” Serany’s company, Southern Studio Interior Design, was part of the team that, along with Bald Head Island Limited, Allison
Ramsey Architects and Whitney Blair Custom Homes, brought the home from conception to completion. T H E B E AU T Y O F C O L L A B O R AT I O N “There was a pervasive sense of excitement and energy around working with Southern Living, as well as the other partners,” says Jim Henry, Director of Development and Construction for Bald Head Island Limited, LLC. “The Southern Living Inspired Community both fits beautifully into the already established Cape Fear Station neighborhood, and stands on its own as a micro-environment within it. For this home, Allison Ramsey took the traditional, Low Country language that is its signature, and painted it with the Bald Head Island aesthetic that we have established here over 30 years.” “It all starts with great architecture,” agrees Serany. “Less embellishment is needed when you have great design. When you have that, magic can happen.” Jeff Sanderson, president and founder of Whitney Blair Custom Homes, expresses a sense of total satisfaction with the home, the first his company has built on Bald Head Island. Whitney Blair is part of the Southern Living Custom Builder Program and is a two-time Southern Living Builder of the Year award winner, most recently in 2015. Looking to articulate what makes the home so special, Sanderson points to the overall sense of scale, proportion and balance. The 10-foot ceilings and eight-foot doors, for example, are pivotal to the interior’s beauty and comfort. “When proper scale and proportion are achieved,” he says, “people automatically find it aesthetically pleasing and feel comfortable in the space.” haven 49
As fresh as the seascapes that inspired it, the downstairs color palette is comprised of true blues and shades of sand. Textures, too, play a role in the rooms’ aesthetics, providing lovely layers and dramatic dimension.
50
AN OPEN PLAN ENSURES A COMFORTABLE FLOW IN THE MAIN LIVING SPACES. FURNITURE GROUPINGS CREATE INTIMATE SETTINGS IN A SPACE THAT LIVES LARGE AND ENTERTAINS EASILY.
Table for 15, please. Three different seating options for dining satisfy any number of family and friends. When you have ample space, you can truly say: The more, the merrier.
52
54
Sanderson also speaks to the practicality of the home. “It’s easy to get good design and a beautiful home with an open checkbook,” he says. “The challenge is doing so on a budget.” Sanderson credits the collaborative process for bringing out creative solutions. As a result, he says, “The home stands as something that is attainable and an inspiration for good architecture and design. It shows what is possible.” A FR ES H TA K E O N T R A D I T I O N A L The design of the home blends traditional coastal elements with sleek, modern details. For example, strategically placed shiplap siding on the walls adds texture, giving a nautical, coastal look without being cliché, while clean lines and up-to-date materials bring a fresh flair throughout the home. The four-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath home essentially has two master suites, one downstairs and the other upstairs. “It’s interesting to hear people who tour the home talk about which they would choose for their master,” says Serany. “Each appeals for a different reason.”
The downstairs master has a custom bed built into an arched alcove and a luxurious bathroom that features sleek details, natural materials, and an unexpected second shower that is outdoors, but only accessible through the inside. At the opposite end of the house, the upstairs master opens onto a wide porch overlooking The Common, a village green at the center of Cape Fear Station. Looking out on the tops of oaks, cedars and palms, it gives a lofty tree-house effect to the suite. The home has two additional bedrooms upstairs, one with a queen and the other with a queen and two bunks. The bunks are built into a wall unit with closets and additional storage space, making much of a smaller room. But according to Sanderson, the space most likely to be fought over is the sleeping porch, a screened area with a custom-made bed suspended from ropes. Those who might be torn between, say, watching a Saturday afternoon football game on TV or being outside on a beautiful day, no longer have to choose: This private retreat has a wall-mounted flat-screen television that lets you indulge in both at the same time. haven 55
The upstairs master suite plays out its lofty, tree-house position with dark wood furnishings and elegant wallpaper that features bright green leaves and beautiful blue birds. Crisp linens and white woodwork provide compelling contrast.
The sleeping porch is indicative of a common theme throughout the house: blurring the lines between the inside and out. Two walls in the living room are made up primarily of French doors that open to a wraparound porch, expanding the living spaces exponentially. Subtle details, too, play with the inside-out juxtaposition, including the use of driftwood as a landscaping element that is carried inside with well-placed touches throughout. “Bald Head Island is truly special,” explains Serany, “and design should be true to the place. The island values good design and honors nature.” To this end, Serany’s team also used the natural surroundings as inspiration for the muted palette. The colors are primarily warm grays and fresh white, with sea glass tints for added interest. Homage is paid to the island’s historic significance, as well, especially as the location of an early United States Lifesaving Service Station, after which the community of Cape Fear Station was named. Archival photographs from the era are framed and placed
throughout the home, including a grouping on the stairwell wall. AT H O M E I N I TS EN V I R O N M EN T In calling out the special features of the home, Henry calls attention to the community’s enviable location on the island: just minutes by foot, bicycle or golf cart to East Beach, South Beach, and the Shoals Club at The Point of Cape Fear. “What has been accomplished here is impressive,” he says. “You have the beautiful homes and amazing amenities, yet you still feel like it’s the ends of the earth. You get to engage in the social surroundings, then retreat to your respite in the woods.” The home’s family-friendly, open floor plan is also appropriate on Bald Head Island, he says. The atmosphere—both on the island and in the home—promotes a sense of community, a place for gathering with family and friends. The home, and the greater community, seem to issue a standing invitation: Come on in and make yourself at home. INSPIRED, INDEED.

When Southern Living magazine and Bald Head Island joined forces to throw a party on The Common at Cape Fear Station, the results were nothing short of inspired. PHOTOGRAPHY BY MILLIE HOLLOMAN
In celebration of the opening of a Southern Living Inspired Home at Cape Fear Station, Roast & Toast on the Coast partygoers enjoyed wine, beer and spirits tastings, a roast pork dinner, booths by island vendors, a cooking demonstration, and a live concert. A portion of proceeds benefitted the Old Baldy Foundation.
Southern food specialties, shopping tables, decorating inspiration, cornhole contests, live painting demos, and a quilt raffle made for a lively, down-home party atmosphere. Craft beer provided by local Southport microbrewery Check Six added to the fun.
Along with sampling craft cocktails by TOPO and enjoying vendors’ booths, Roast & Toast on the Coast revelers watched Southern Living Test Kitchen Director Robby Melvin make pumpkin soup from the magazine’s October issue. A concert by Nashville songwriters Rob Crosby and Friends capped off the night.
Patricia Wingfield’s connection to Bald Head Island runs deep. She’s lived and worked here for 30 years and in that time has listed, sold, owned and rented many properties. In other words, when it comes to any aspect of Bald Head Island real estate, Patricia has tackled it. Patricia has a first-hand knowledge of the island’s diverse environments—marsh, river, ocean, fairway and maritime forest—and loves educating her clients about each of them. Nothing makes her happier than fitting the ideal property to the right person and keeping in touch after the sale to ensure a smooth transition. Stop by the Bald Head Island Limited Real Estate Sales office in the harbor to meet with Patricia and let her put her experience and knowledge to work for you.

IT'S EASY TO FIND SOMETHING
GOOD TO EAT
WHILE ON BALD HEAD ISLAND.
WHETHER YOU WANT TO GRAB A SANDWICH TO TAKE TO THE BEACH, SIP FROSTY COCKTAILS HARBORSIDE, OR ENJOY FINE DINING WITH A VIEW THAT RIVALS THE CUISINE, WE'VE GOT YOU COVERED.
HUNGRY IN THE HARBOR
Our harbor is packed with snacks, bites, sips, drafts, bottles, cones, sweets, treats, and just about anything you’d want to eat.
MOJO’S ON THE HARBOR
When you dine at MoJo’s, dine al fresco. Whether you sit on the lower deck and count the boats in the harbor or sit on the upper deck for marsh and lighthouse views, you’ll soon realize the scenery makes your meal that much better. MoJo’s serves lunch and dinner, and as you’d expect from a waterside eatery, they dish up a good bit of seafood. For lunch, the fish taco—with a zesty citrus slaw and fresh salsa—is a go-to option, but don’t overlook the grouper BLT, which takes a classic sandwich and gives it a seaside twist. At dinner, it’s a seafood smorgasbord. Many diners opt for the Calabash-style fried seafood baskets or a mess of peeland-eat shrimp, but if you’ve come hungry, or in a large group, there’s only one thing to order: the traditional steam pot. Overflowing with steamed shrimp, mussels, crab legs, clams, corn, sausage and potatoes, it’s a feast made for sharing. MoJo’s also offers something a little different in the fish 78
department: sushi. The sushi bar’s a popular summertime spot, so if it’s rolls you require, beat the crowds and get here early. If you aren’t in the mood for surf, MoJo’s also has a range of turf dishes and Italian offerings on their menu. A rib eye steak or half-rack of ribs, slathered with homemade barbecue sauce of course, will fill you up in no time. Italian offerings include pasta and meatballs—made using the recipe of the owner’s beloved grandmother—and linguine and clams, along with a handful of other specialties of the house that will make you feel right at home. There’s a full bar at MoJo’s, and it serves a broad selection of local and craft beers. The wine list is extensive and the cocktails are refreshing takes on drinks you know. During summer they offer karaoke and music on the deck for family fun, and some late-night karaoke in the bar for the grown-ups.
HONEY’S BBQ SHACK
No self-respecting North Carolina island would think of not having at least one genuine barbecue joint. That’s where Honey’s BBQ Shack, located adjacent to MoJo’s on the Harbor, comes in. The diminutive space packs a lot of flavor, with ribs, pulled pork and brisket seasoned with Honey’s own special
BBQ sauce and rub. Southern sides and sweet tea round out the offerings. Stop by to pick up an easy take-out meal or eat outside at the surrounding picnic tables. Open seasonally.
DELPHINA CANTINA
For a taste of Latin cuisine, make Delphina Cantina your pick for lunch or dinner. The chef shows his love for the flavors of Mexico, Spain and Cuba in a fun atmosphere only steps away from the ferry landing. On the menu you’ll find some familiar dishes in quesadillas, nachos and steak tacos, but look deeper for some real surprises. Fish tacos like the BHI favorite (tequilamarinated shrimp), the chef’s signature (blackened tuna), and pan-seared mahi are outstanding choices. Entrees like Madridstyle shrimp and grits (think Southern favorite with a touch of Spanish flavor) and the carnitas al horno—adobo-braised pork with jalapeño cabbage and Dijon mashed potatoes—are worth coming back for. There is one dish you can’t miss: elotero corn. Roasted corn on the cob slathered with garlic aioli and coated with a blend of Tajin chili and Cotija cheese, it’s a fresh take on an ear of corn. With a full bar, fun dishes, and several kid-friendly selections, visiting Delphina is an easy choice.
SANDPIPER COFFEE & ICE CREAM
Next to Delphina is Sandpiper Coffee & Ice Cream, where you can grab that wake-me-up cup of coffee or that end-of-day ice cream. Fresh baked muffins, bagels and breakfast burritos are some of their food options, but the locally roasted coffee, charming little bits of latte foam art, and that premium ice cream bring everyone on the island in for a treat.
MARINA PIZZA
If you want a pizza pie to take back to your house, eat on the dock or on the beach, or to enjoy at Will o’ The Wisp, then you want Marina Pizza. With the standard fare of pizza toppings available, plus a few specialty pies now and again, Marina Pizza will satisfy your cravings for one of our favorite foods. Order at Delphina and pick it up at the bar.
WILL O’ THE WISP
Will o’ The Wisp might just be the perfect spot to share a bottle of wine or sip a beer while watching the sun set. Mark time with the ferry’s arrival or just enjoy the breeze and company while you forget about the clock; it doesn’t matter when you’re relaxing at Will o’ The Wisp. They serve wine and beer here, as well as gourmet popcorn, and you’re always welcome to bring your pizza to enjoy. Open seasonally.
GRAB AND GO
When it’s time for a beach picnic, when you need to stock the pantry, or when it’s breakfast you’re craving, spots like Mike’s Bites and the Maritime Market Café have what you seek.
MIKE’S BITES
Located in front of the Bald Head Island Conservancy, Mike’s Bites occupies the former Cape Fear Light generator building, which they’ve turned into the smallest eatery on the island. Serving sandwiches, hot dogs, snacks and cool treats like Italian ice, Mike’s Bites, now in its fifth season, has quickly become a favorite for on-the-go or take-it-to-the-beach grub. Open seasonally.
haven 79
MARITIME MARKET CAFÉ
We all know the Maritime Market has everything you need to stock your beach house with enough food, wine, snacks and sweets to keep you eating for a week, but the Maritime Market Café is a central spot to stop and grab breakfast, lunch or a pizza. At breakfast they serve classics like buttermilk pancakes and biscuits and gravy, but daily specials—like stuffed French toast or house-made sausage—and the stone-ground grits make for a great morning meal. Lunch is all about the hand-held meal here. Sandwiches, wraps, burgers and hot dogs, all served with homemade Parmesan and herb potato chips, dominate the lunchtime offerings. Try the tar heel burger, served N.C. style—that’s with chili, mustard, onion, slaw and American cheese—or a sandwich like the classic Italian hoagie to hold you over until dinner. You can also get a slice of pizza or a whole pie from the Maritime Market Café. Toppings include the usual suspects, but the specialty pies, like the Maui waui—with ham, bacon, pineapple and banana peppers—really shine.
HEAD TO THE CLUB
Two beautiful clubs on the island—the Shoals Club and Bald Head Island Club−serve up fine-dining fare and easy lunches to full-time and temporary members.
BALD HEAD ISLAND CLUB
At the Bald Head Island Club, three dining venues serve hungry members breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Sunday brunch at the Club has become a tradition for many residents and visitors, with holiday brunches being particularly
80
memorable. Hours and meal services vary by venue and season, so check for availability before you head out to dine.
THE PELICATESSEN
The Pelicatessen, more affectionately known as The Peli, is the Bald Head Island Club’s poolside eatery. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, The Peli stays busy. It’s the lunch spot of choice for swimmers and families as the menu of sandwiches, salads and pizzas are kid-friendly. And that kids’ menu is a fun one. They always serve chicken fingers—a favorite of kids everywhere—and other less expected items like the peanut butter and banana “sushi.” You can build your own pizza at The Peli or go for one of their creative pies like the black & bleu—with chicken, bacon, caramelized onions and bleu cheese—or Greek, with artichoke hearts, olives and roasted garlic. The Peli also has sundaes, shakes and floats, and Nye’s Cream Sandwiches—fresh baked cookies stuffed with homemade ice cream in gourmet flavors.
THE PALMS AND PALMS TERRACE
The Palms and Palms Terrace serve a menu of high-end, pub-style food that’s hearty and perfect after a day on the golf course. In the dining room and on the terrace, you’ll enjoy views of holes #10 and #18 and the expansive croquet greensward, along with your meal. The menu is loaded with dishes that elevate the typical pub fare. You’ll find Guinness-battered fish and chips alongside a Boursin and crab tenderloin, rock shrimp scampi by the pheasant breast Marsala, and a classic burger beside the banh mi. They also serve a full bar with a good selection of beer and premium spirits.
THE GRILLE
The Grille, the main dining venue at the Bald Head Island Club, overlooks the golf practice facility and serves lunch and dinner (hours vary by season). For lunch they serve the same menu as The Palms, but for dinner they dish up their own specialties. Dinner here is decidedly upscale and the food is rich and borderline decadent. The chef and his team use as many local products as possible, so you’ll find a menu filled with seafood and Southern sides like grits and collards. Choose between small plates or main dishes for your meal. Small plates include offerings like baked oysters Bienville and seared sea scallops. The mains include dishes that are indulgent to say the least. The local shellfish & grits, featuring shrimp, sea scallops and lobster over grits, is a great way to update a Southern classic. The sautéed snapper is a seemingly simple dish that will have you talking later. And the steaks—either the filet or New York strip—are cooked to perfection.
SHOALS CLUB
At the Shoals Club, those views of The Point of Cape Fear are hard to beat, but the creative menu packed with fresh dishes and local ingredients tops it every time. With three dining venues to choose from, full and temporary members have a wide range of spaces and menus at their disposal. Take lunch poolside at the Sandbar Grille, enjoy a light meal and glass of wine on the deck or in the lounge at Latitudes, or enjoy a vibrant coastal menu in Aqua, the Club’s main dining room.
SANDBAR GRILLE
The lunch and dinner menu at Sandbar Grille is exactly what you want when eating poolside: burgers, wraps, fish tacos and salads; and don’t forget the full bar. Families looking to maximize pool time love the Sandbar Grille’s many kid-friendly
options. The mango mahi tacos is a popular plate for kids and parents alike, while the wasabi egg salad pita is a spicy take on a summer dish that grown-ups love. The frozen drinks come in flavors for kids and adults, so everyone can find an icy treat to cool themselves off.
LATITUDES
In the Shoals Club lounge and on the adjacent deck, you’ll find Latitudes, a casual spot to grab a glass of wine, a North Carolina craft beer, and top-shelf spirits. The food menu here is loaded with creative little dishes that encourage you to order a table full and graze as you please. A salsa trio, grilled shrimp flatbread and local ceviche lend themselves to sharing, though if you order the coconut tempura lobster or avocado-crab stack, you might find that you keep those to yourself. If you’re in the mood for nibbling, cheese plates, oysters on the halfshell, shrimp cocktail and antipasto platters are the perfect accompaniments to the salt air and panoramic view.
AQUA
In Aqua, the Shoals Club’s premier dining venue, the chef serves fresh coastal fare that shows a flair for culinary creativity and an eye for locally and regionally sourced seasonal ingredients. Scallops get a glaze of honey and peach. A simple Caprese salad is transformed by the addition of nectarine. Grilled peaches enliven a salad. Salmon comes coconutcrusted and served with a mango-rum sauce. And the rib eye gets a blueberry balsamic treatment that’s to die for. Junior diners aren’t left out. On their menu, the fish and chips isn’t simply fish and chips, but flounder fingers and sweet potato fries, while the pint-sized cut of prime rib is almost too adorable to eat.

When the uniqueness of a place sings to us like a melody, then we will know, at last, what it means to be home. - PAU L G RU C H OW
BA L D H E A D I S L A N D:
A Love Story, By Land and By Sea by Odette Embert Arnold

L
ike love between two people, love of a place can create a type of euphoria. It’s a giddy, all-is-right-with-the-world feeling when you are there, an intense longing when you are not.
And heaven help you when a breakup occurs.
A Romance Begins My husband Claude and I began visiting Bald Head Island in 1992, and our now 22-year-old daughter Maggie grew up spending time there from infancy. We rented houses in various island environments, and during one blissful 11-year stretch, we co-owned a home across from South Beach with my husband’s mother and brother. We named the 1700-square-foot cottage Loblolly, a tribute to my husband’s great-grandfather who started a timber and paper business. The cozy size of the house was part of her charm and, as long-time sailors, we were used to being efficient with space. From the time Maggie was seven until her senior year in high school, we shared Loblolly with family members, carving out precious weekends, holidays and extended summer vacations. Well-meaning people warned us that, as Maggie grew older, she would likely lose interest in going to a place as non-commercialized as Bald Head Island, especially during her teenaged years. That never happened. Coming to the island, often bringing friends or sharing it with cousins, was a source of joy for all of us, year after year. In addition to countless hours on a sparsely populated beach swimming, surfing and sunning, we spent the days showing visitors our favorite places, never tiring of them ourselves. The itinerary often included, but was by no means limited to: the Timmons Oak in the maritime forest, with tales of the Keebler elves baking cookies there; the tidal pools that formed at the cape, where we spent hours with scoop nets chasing tiny fish and crabs; the marsh, where we launched a canoe, kayak or standup paddleboard and explored the creeks; and of course, Old Baldy, her steps spiraling to the best views on the East Coast. Showing someone around the island once, Maggie emphatically stated that she would get married on Bald Head Island one day. “What if your fiancé doesn’t want to do that?” asked the visitor. “Well then,” she said without missing a beat, “we won’t get married.” While our affection for the cottage never waned, there came a time when my in-laws were not able to use the cottage anymore; financially, it was clearly time to put Loblolly on the market. It was a sad realization for all of us; Maggie, however, reacted as if we were selling her childhood. 88

R E U N I T E D, A N D I T F E E L S S O G O O D Several years after we sold the Bald Head home, we bought a sailboat, the thirteenth in our 28-year marriage. We have even lived aboard sailboats twice, once early in our marriage after Claude survived a serious health scare, and a second time when Maggie was 12. We homeschooled her for seventh grade, spending that winter and spring in the Bahamas aboard a Bavaria 42 aptly named Trio. The Bahamas, too, hold a special place in our hearts, and we bought our current boat in hopes of stationing it in the islands for the winter. Those plans did not materialize, so we formulated an excellent—and no less inviting—plan B. We moved the Beneteau 393 the 40 miles from our home in Wrightsville Beach to Southport’s Deep Point Marina, homeport for the Bald Head Island ferry fleet. The sailboat would become both our private ferry and our Bald Head Island home. And, of course, we named her Loblolly. N O T A H O U S E , BU T D E F I N I T E LY A H O M E In many ways, a boat is a private island. It’s surrounded by water, and it offers everything needed to live quite happily and comfortably. Ours has two sleeping cabins, each with a double berth, and two heads. The galley and main salon create an open space for gathering around the table to eat, drink and play games. Jigsaw puzzles and board games have always been part of our family time, another happy constant. Current favorites and crowd pleasers include Mexican Train Dominos and Farkle, a dice game that is a little like poker. As wholesome as it sounds, make no mistake: It’s serious competition. For Easter 2015, Maggie and her boyfriend joined us for the weekend. It was the first time we took Loblolly to the island, and Maggie’s first time back since we sold the cottage. It was sweet watching her play tour guide, showing him the island she loves.
90
As marina guests, we were able to buy a temporary membership at the Bald Head Island Club, where we enjoyed the pool and tennis courts. The Shoals Club was not yet open for the season, but we walked to The Point, taking in the wraparound ocean views and magical setting. It just never gets old. The development surrounding the harbor has changed dramatically over the past two decades, and a quaint seaside village has emerged. We strolled past lovely coastal cottages with charming picket fences, making our way to the various restaurants and shops ringing the basin. Obviously, great care has been taken to make the additions both convenient and aesthetically pleasing. We found bicycle and golf cart rentals just steps away from the dockmaster’s office, as well as a great coffee and ice cream shop for indulgences: hot skim lattes and scoops of mint chocolate chip. A N E V E R- E N D I N G I N FAT UAT I O N Our family of three took two more jaunts to the island during the summer: Memorial Day weekend and for a few days in mid-July. Both visits played out perfectly, with the Shoals Club added to our lineup of activities, and the holiday weekend’s special events in full swing. As I write, fall is approaching and with it, the promise of Indian summer days in September, October and November—our favorite time on the island. We have been so fortunate to experience Bald Head Island in many ways over many years, and if there comes a time when we don’t have Loblolly to take us to Bald Head Island anymore, the island will nevertheless continue to be a part of our lives. After all, as any romantic will tell you: True love will find a way.

FOR SUE PR ENDERGAST AND JOYCE NELSON, OWNING AN ART GALLERY IS A
by Christi Golder Photography by Harry Taylor
Barb Scalia, Tribute haven 97
98
It’s mid-morning
on a Thursday, and it couldn’t be any more lively or homey than at All About Art. Kids’ laughter rings from the studio in the back. The sweet smell of cupcakes drifts over from the bake shop next door. Rainey, a rescued flat-coated retriever, stretches out lazily on an Oriental rug near the entryway. She’s made herself at home, just like the customers, who relax immediately upon entering the space, greeted warmly by co-owners Sue Prendergast and Joyce Nelson. Toss aside any preconceived notions you might have—this is not your stereotypical, stuffy art gallery. “We wanted it to be welcoming here,” explained Sue Prendergast. “Bring your children. Bring your dog. Come take a look to see what’s happening, see what new art has arrived.” Relaxed atmosphere aside, the collection of art that Joyce and Sue have amassed is nothing short of remarkable. From landscapes to abstract paintings, still lifes to figurative drawings, papier mâché mobiles to handsewn textiles, nearly every square inch of the shop is covered with art. “We always say that I’m the brawn of the operation, and Sue is the brains,” said Joyce Nelson while ascending a step ladder, noting that she hangs each new piece that arrives, and belying the fact that she tips the scales at around 100 pounds. The friends’ path to running an art gallery wasn’t conventional. Sue, who oversees the gallery’s bookkeeping, worked for many years on the business side of Harvard’s hospital. Joyce spent a career as a social worker, counseling emergency room psychiatric patients. The two had retired from their former occupations when they moved to Bald Head Island along with their husbands many years ago. They appreciated the island’s more relaxed pace and tight-knit sense of community. Years later, when the island’s only art venue, The Woods Gallery, announced it was closing its doors, the two swung into action. “We said to each other, there has to be art on Bald Head Island,” said Sue. “Do you think we could do that?” Joyce asked. They’d never run a gallery before in their lives. The two sat down and had a heart-to-heart. They were the best of friends, and didn’t want anything to ruin the friendship. They consulted Chappy Valente, a talented artist and teacher, who said he’d lend a hand and help out with classes. Bolstered by his encouragement, and the support of their spouses, they made a pact to give it a go, and to have a great time along the way. Since then, they haven’t looked back. Entrepreneurs Joyce Nelson, Sue Prendergast and Rainey
Michael Van Hout, Fish
“Our theory is, if it’s not fun, you shouldn’t be doing it,” said Joyce. The ease with which the two work together is readily apparent. They laugh frequently, tease one another, and take turns finishing each other’s sentences. By all appearances, they are having the time of their lives. “That it has worked as well as it has, given how little time we had for planning, is one of the most satisfying things,” said Joyce. “And we’ve met so many amazing people we wouldn’t have met otherwise, so many talented artists,” said Sue. The criteria for selecting art for the shop is simple. “First and foremost, we have to like the work,” said Sue. “Initially, we went out to find artists to carry. Now, we have artists seeking us out.” The majority of the artwork sold at All About Art is representational and reminiscent of Bald Head Island, Sue said, as customers are wanting to take a piece of the island home with them. Notwithstanding the tendency to carry more landscapes than abstracts, the gallery offers an impressive range of styles. Along with art openings and receptions, a full calendar of classes, seminars and camps runs throughout the year. “My favorite thing that we do is bring kids into the studio for classes,” said Joyce. “They bring so much excitement and energy. Teachers like my sister-in-law, Betsy Nelson, bring new things every time they come, and the kids just eat it up.” While Sue and Joyce didn’t have much time to prepare to become gallery owners, they’ve now had time to think longer term about their aspirations. “We want to extend the visitor season on the island and give people a reason to come enjoy art year-round,” said Joyce. “We’d like to put Bald Head Island on the map as a destination for those who appreciate art and artists,” echoed Sue. These are big goals for a small gallery. But from the looks of things, they are well on their way.

The Magnetic Personality of Sea Turtles by Jason Frye
T
he stars are a little brighter on Bald Head Island. Step out onto the beach any night and you’ll see the difference that little or no light pollution makes; the sky is swimming with constellations. It’s this darkness, and the wild, natural side of Bald Head Island, which make it an ideal place to reconnect with the earth, sky and sea. At night you can spot deer and fox, eerie bioluminescent creatures in the surf, and one of the island’s most iconic visitors, the Loggerhead sea turtle. Each summer scores of Loggerhead turtles return to the beaches and dunes of Bald Head Island to lay a clutch of eggs. A few months later, those nests “boil” and erupt, sending up to 100 hatchlings to the sea. Of these siblings, a handful of females will reach adulthood, mate, and, decades after 124
they hatch, return to their birth beach— here on Bald Head Island—to continue the cycle and lay their own clutch of eggs. The Bald Head Island Conservancy (BHIC) has led the charge in protecting the nesting turtles, nests and hatchlings (along with all the flora and fauna on the island) for more than three decades. “We’ve been keeping records [on sea turtles] since 1980,” said Emily Hardin, Coastal Specialist and Sea Turtle Program Coordinator for the BHIC. “Field data sheets for nesting, hatching and stranding events from 1983 to present take up 28 twoinch binders in the Barrier Island Study Center’s library.” BHIC naturalists and interns collect data including the date, time and tide of each nesting; nest location; measurements
of the carapace (shell); PIT microchip and flipper tag numbers; and, now, DNA samples. With all the sea turtle data collected and analyzed by BHIC and similar research and conservation groups the world over, it may come as a surprise that we have no definitive answer on just how sea turtles know their birth beach, the place they lay their own nest. One researcher and Ph.D. candidate from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill has a theory. As a child, J. Rogers Brothers saw a sea turtle nest emergence on Holden Beach, N.C., and it started a lifelong fascination with the ocean and with how migratory animals navigate over long distances. Sea turtles became a particular focus. “Successful nesting requires a combination of different environmental features that are rare: soft sand, the right temperature for egg incubation, few predators, and an easily accessible beach. These factors are impossible to assess from far away, so for a turtle in the open ocean, selecting a nesting beach is no trivial task,” Brothers said. “The only way a female turtle can be sure that she is nesting in a favorable place is to nest on the same beach where she hatched.” In a paper published in Current Biology, “Evidence for Geomagnetic Imprinting and Magnetic Navigation in the Natal Homing of Sea Turtles,” which Brothers co-authored with his advisor, Dr. Kenneth Lohmann, Brothers posits that sea turtles essentially have an inborn GPS that allows them to mark their birth beach using the Earth’s magnetic field. “While our work does not exclude the possibility that turtles use additional sensory information (olfactory or visual) during the final approach to the beach, no known cue, other than magnetism, provides the information necessary to locate a specific nesting beach over a long distance.” Brothers goes on to say that once a turtle locates her beach, she may be deterred from nesting by bright lights or the scent of

a predator. Once she finds her beach, sand grain size, moisture content, and other factors will determine whether that’s the place for her nest. Throughout the summer, the Conservancy’s turtle interns patrol the beach, looking for turtle tracks leading from the sea to the dunes, signs of a nesting turtle. Once they locate the turtle, they’ll watch her from a distance until she’s nesting, at which time it’s safe for them to approach and begin collecting data. After the nest is laid, they mark it, install an anti-predator cage, and monitor the nest until it hatches. The Conservancy makes a number of efforts to educate Bald Head Island’s residents and visitors on sea turtle protection. From simple actions like turning off beach-facing lights and shading beach-facing windows, packing away any beach equipment at the end of the day, and keeping dogs on leashes, to more involved efforts like Turtle Walks and Adopt-A-Turtle or -Nest programs, it’s easy to make a difference in sea turtle conservation. Hardin says that over the course of nearly 30 years and through the efforts of the Conservancy and its members and volunteers, “about 170,000 turtles have hatched from nests on our beaches.” In 25-30 years, as these turtles reach sexual maturity, they’ll return to lay their eggs here. “If we look at [records from] the last 10 years, we see an increase in the number of nests per year,” said Hardin. “It’s possible that the conservation efforts made by volunteers and supporters of the Conservancy in its infancy are beginning to show.” Brothers spent the summer of 2015 on Bald Head Island and said he was “extremely impressed” with their turtle program. “The BHIC has developed a model program that
excels at monitoring the nesting population and conserving sea turtles, while simultaneously helping people understand and enjoy them,” said Brothers. That said, there’s still work to do in protecting these creatures and there’s still research to be done. As far as Brothers’ hypothesis about magnetic fields goes, it raises questions about the metal cages conservation groups use to protect nests. When does the magnetic imprinting happen? If it happens while turtles are in the nest, will the metal cages be detrimental to the imprinting process? If turtles imprint when they leave the nest, how do manmade
factors (like power lines and metal structures) impact imprinting? As researchers like Brothers continue their work, and as groups like the Bald Head Island Conservancy continue their preservation, protection and education efforts, we will become better equipped to help keep sea turtles safe. The Bald Head Island Conservancy makes it easy to get involved. Visit www. bhic.org or stop in at Turtle Central or the Barrier Island Study Center on the island for a full list of adoption and donation programs, to join the Conservancy, and to participate in Turtle Walks and additional volunteer and educational programs.
