activity guide
From the beach to the creeks, Harbour Village to Cape Fear itself, there’s no end to the ways to explore Bald Head Island. Here are 10 possibilities to consider ‌ so grab your gear and get ready to go!
10
The maritime forest forms a several-miles-long arching canopy starting from North Bald Head Wynd and running all the way down Federal Road. Travel through this natural tunnel by foot or bike for the full effect.
No bridge connects Bald Head Island to the mainland, leaving it footloose and carfree. The most popular modes of transportation are the electric golf cart and bicycle. Whenever possible, opt for two wheels to better soak up the surroundings. Both Coastal Urge and Riverside Adventure Company rent bikes by the day and week. At Coastal Urge you’ll also find longboard skateboards, possibly the hippest way to get around. Add a land paddle and get in quite the workout as you “surf” the roads around the island. Hikers take note: Along Federal Road several trailheads enter the Bald Head Woods Preserve, nearly 200 acres of undisturbed maritime forest. The M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail rewards you with spectacular views of the creek and close encounters with fiddler crabs if the tide is low. 28

Take a Walk on the Wild Side
When it comes to getting close to nature, nothing can compete with the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Join Conservancy staff on their nightly patrols with the Sea Turtle Ride Along, help watch for turtle tracks leading from the waves to the dunes, and call back to base with your findings. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you could see a loggerhead turtle lay her eggs or witness a nest hatch. The Conservancy also holds Turtle Walks for members, which start at the Barrier Island Study Center and then move to the beach for a little lesson in ecology. If you’re lucky, your group will head off to watch a turtle dig her nest and lay her eggs while Conservancy naturalists collect information. Later in the season, you may get to see a nest “boil” and hatch. Another evening event, Bald Head After Dark, introduces you to the nocturnal creatures of the island, including frogs, bats, alligators and bioluminescent plankton. After a presentation, you’ll join a naturalist on a walk to see what nighttime critters you can spot. Every season of the year, Bald Head Island is home to an impressive array of birds—some 244 species in total—and the Conservancy staff members know them by sight and song. Join a Birding Expedition to see how many you can find. You’ll get a rare opportunity to visit the Ibis Pond on Middle Island, a secret sanctuary where waterbirds congregate. To truly live like a local, join the Conservancy for a quick primer on crabbing and cast netting. In just a couple hours’ time, you’ll be catching any number of baitfish and blue crabs in the water around the Village Creek Access. The Bald Head Island Conservancy is also known for their experiential summer camps for kids 4-14. While preschoolers catch bugs and make crafts, elementary schoolers get in a kayak and go crabbing and shell collecting. Middle schoolers get involved with the Conservancy’s efforts to care for the island by collecting data, helping with research, planting dune grasses and more.
haven 29
Board Silly When you travel to the island, bring along your favorite longboard or shortboard for testing out the waves. Or, better yet, pack light and rent a board from the Sail Shop. If you’re new to surfing, the Sail Shop offers group and private lessons. Take a standup paddleboard (SUP) lesson or tour with Coastal Urge for a new way to explore the island’s waters. Stop by the Board Room on Keelson Row in Harbour Village for rentals, excursions and instruction. For good exercise and guaranteed laughs, rent a Sasquatch SUP and paddle along with up to six of your closest friends.
30
3 4
Beach Bumming You can swim, splash, flip, frolic, dive and play in the waves to your heart’s content, but there’s more to do at the shore than just go for a swim. Fourteen miles of beach offer a backdrop for building sandcastles, collecting shells or just watching the clouds float by. And with that much shoreline, there’s a lot of ground to cover. South Beach’s long stretch of sand is ideal for strolling and shelling. Along West Beach near Harbour Village, you’ll find kids playing in the shallow surf. Out on East Beach, the waves are typically bigger and the surfers and boogie boarders love the action.
5
You (Don’t) Need a Bigger Boat Through the Bald Head Island Conservancy, you can take guided kayak or canoe tours with an expert naturalist. Expect to see egrets, ibises, herons, kingfishers, ospreys, bald eagles, and maybe even a dolphin or alligator on your tour. At the Sail Shop they offer guided trips along Bald Head Creek and Fishing Creek in single and double kayaks. These 90-minute tours are packed with history, stories and wildlife identification, but if you’d rather go out on your own, the Sail Shop is happy to provide you with a kayak or canoe, life jacket and paddle, and send you on your way. They even carry a few sit-on-top kayaks that you can use in the creek or on the ocean if you’re feeling especially adventurous. You could also take it easy on the water and go sailing with the Sail Shop. Their 26’ J80 sailboats, Jive and Joyride, are perfect for a relaxing sail out on the Atlantic or along the inland waters of the Cape Fear River. If you’re interested, you can take sailing lessons on the J80, or kids from 8-13 can try their hand at sailing one of the Optimist Prams.
haven 31
And Now for Something Completely Different Riverside Adventure Company hosts out-of-the-box activities galore. Don’t miss their Archery Camp or Trivia Night at Will o’ the Wisp. Riverside’s signature event is Sunset Celebration, a street party with DJ Fray, dancing, s’mores and games, held weekly during the summer near Beach Access 5.
Step Back in Time Climb the 108 steps that carry you to the top of Old Baldy Lighthouse, commissioned by Thomas Jefferson, completed in 1817, and still standing today. When you reach the lanthorn room, you’ll enjoy an island panorama that will make you pause for a moment before pulling out your camera. After you descend, take time to look through the Smith Island Museum of History where you’ll find artifacts revealing the daily duties of a lighthouse keeper. You’ll also learn about Fort Holmes, the Confederate gun battery that once housed 1,100 soldiers. For a deeper dive into days gone by, take a historic tour from the Old Baldy Foundation and hear about brushes with pirates, the trio of lighthouses that have graced the island, and the brave lifesaving servicemen who once did duty at Cape Fear Station.
32
For a tongue-in-cheek take on the island’s “haunted history,” sign up for a familyfriendly Ghost Walk offered by Riverside Adventure Company’s entertaining scalawags during summer evenings.
At All About Art, the island’s much-loved art gallery, any number of classes and camps will have kids tapping into their creativity to make keepsakes of their own. In Under the Sea, they’ll create mermaids, whales, crabs and sand dollars; in Mini Masters, they’ll explore different mediums and methods of making art; and in All Aboard, kids will create wooden plaques to take home. And that’s just the tip of the All About Art iceberg. There are other programs—like Wine-ing About Art and countless painting workshops—geared toward grown-ups, too.
6 7
8
Fish On!
Fishing on the island can take many forms, from hiring a charter captain to take you to the Gulf Stream in search of tuna, to simply casting a line into the surf in hopes of hooking dinner. From the surf you can catch flounder, red drum, bluefish, mullet, pompano and Spanish mackerel. Speckled trout, grey trout, red drum, spots and flounder inhabit the creeks here, and whether you’re fishing from a dock, boat or kayak, you stand a chance of landing a beauty. If you decide to head offshore, your guide can pick you up in Harbour Village and put you on tuna, grouper, mackerel, dolphin, tarpon and even sailfish. Most guides provide licenses and equipment, but if you’re fishing from shore, be sure to have a valid North Carolina fishing license, which can be purchased online.
Sunset Celebration, half street party, half beach bash, takes place weekly during the summer in front of Delphina Cantina and along West Beach. From mermaids to pirates to jugglers, you never know who’ll make the scene. haven 33
If you’re renting, be sure to request a temporary membership in the Bald Head Island Club and the Shoals Club, so you can enjoy all the fun the island has to offer.
9
Just for Sport Book a tee time at the Bald Head Island Club to play one of North Carolina’s most stunning golf courses. The course winds its way along the Atlantic Ocean and through the maritime forest, providing scenic views at every turn. If your swing’s a little rusty, head to the range where you can warm up, take a lesson from a PGA pro, or join a clinic and perfect your game. If golf isn’t your thing, you can enjoy a tennis match on one of the Club’s four courts. Clinics, socials and private lessons for kids and adults are available with one of the U.S. Professional Tennis Association staff members during the summer. While you’re here, take note of the immaculate croquet greenswards where the Bald Head Island Croquet Club plays, practices and holds prestigious international tournaments. From June to September they host Family Croquet, relaxed gatherings where you can learn how the game is played.
34
When you’re ready to cool off, the Club’s 25-meter pool is open for lap swimming first thing in the morning, then open to everyone the remainder of the day. There’s a slide for kids 10 and under and a giggle-inducing Splash Pad for kids 12 and under. The Club also offers a robust summer camp program, including golf, tennis and swimming instruction; arts and crafts; games; and plenty of aquatic activities.
10
Cape Crusading
The oceanfront Shoals Club, which overlooks the Point of Cape Fear, offers a spacious swimming pool, along with a baby pool for the little ones. When you’re ready for a change of pace, round up the family for a little friendly competition on the nearby volleyball or bocce ball courts. Direct access to the cape is also a perk for members and temporary members of the Shoals Club. Just grab a towel, chair and umbrella, and hit the beach. The Shoals Club has a calendar full of activities for kids, headed up by their friendly staff and mascot Gulliver, a sea gull who’s wisely chosen to make the island his home. From pool parties to tiedyeing to craft hour, there are more chances to dance, splash, play and be a kid than you’d believe.

he stands as a revered icon of a beloved island. Soaring to a height of 110 feet, she rises above the majestic canopy of old growth trees rimming the marsh, providing the first glimpse of Bald Head Island for those returning from the mainland, river or sea. From her prominent position so near the harbor, she serves as a stunning and gracious host, welcoming all to the island—many who come specifically to visit her.

As the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina, Old Baldy’s history is well established and well documented. So what new information could a 200-year-old monument possibly have to share? Turns out, quite a bit. BREAKING NEWS THAT’S CENTURIES OLD Maritime historian Kevin Duffus, author of four books about North Carolina history, has spent the past two years researching Old Baldy and the Cape Fear region. The result of his labors is a new book, published in the spring of 2017, to coincide with Old Baldy’s milestone birthday. Mining the National Archives in Washington, D.C., Duffus uncovered a dozen or more facts and tidbits that were either previously unknown about Old Baldy and Cape Fear, or have been erroneously reported for many decades. “I was shocked and pleased to discover such significant revelations,” said Duffus. “One of the greatest rewards for a research historian is to peer through
the door to the past and unexpectedly discover a trove of forgotten facts that have been buried for a hundred years or more. I have enjoyed this experience many times but never before have I uncovered more revelations than I have with this new history of Cape Fear.” Among the topics addressed in his new work: the origins of the names Cape Fear and Frying Pan Shoals; facts about a Bald Head Island lighthouse predating Old Baldy, including its demise and where parts of it live on; a revered president’s objection to the nomination of a female lighthouse keeper; other location options for Old Baldy; revelations about her distinctive off-set lantern; the installation of the third-order lens considered the jewel in her crown; and how shortsighted the government was in its estimate of Old Baldy’s longevity. There’s even a forgotten secret: there is another lighthouse inside. Proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the Old Baldy Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the maintenance and preservation of Old Baldy Lighthouse. The foundation has launched a campaign to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for an ambitious plan that will take the lighthouse and its surrounding grounds into the next century. FOUNDATIONAL SUPPORT According to Chris Webb, executive director of Old Baldy Foundation, an expanded museum building will provide much needed additional space to tell the stories of the three lighthouses and two lifesaving stations that have stood on the island. The Cape Fear Light First Order Fresnel Lens will have a new home, along with many artifacts currently in storage that haven’t been displayed because of lack of space. Bald Head Island Limited donated the land on which the new museum building will stand, and the current Keeper’s Cottage, which houses the small museum and gift shop now, will

become additional museum space with a library on the second floor. Formed in 1985, the Old Baldy Foundation was the force behind the “Steps to the Top” campaign in the early 1990s that raised more than $125,000 to restore and renovate the lighthouse. In 1997, the foundation took out a loan to finance the building of a replica of a keeper’s cottage on the grounds, which opened in 2000. For the first time ever, visitors were charged admission for the museum and lighthouse, with those fees and proceeds from the gift shop providing necessary funds for the
ongoing maintenance and long-term preservation efforts. Old Baldy hosts nearly 30,000 visitors a year, in excess of 300 a day during the busy months. There is no state or federal funding for the lighthouse, and the Old Baldy Foundation covers expenses through revenue from admissions, retail sales, special events and historic tours. Additionally, the foundation receives donations and grants earmarked for the new museum building and other programs, such as Lighthouse Learners. Fourthgraders statewide study North Carolina
history, and a grant for Lighthouse Learners underwrites the cost of transportation for school field trips. Webb said the foundation hosted nearly 900 children and chaperones in 2015. “Children come from across the state, but it’s particularly significant that even some who live in Brunswick County, and have seen Old Baldy from across the river, have never visited the island,” said Susan Grantier, program coordinator for the Old Baldy Foundation. “Lighthouse Learners helps expose them to the region’s rich history in a fun and active way.” haven 49
DRAWN TO THE LIGHT During the weekend of August 5-7, 2016, in celebration of National Lighthouse Weekend, the Old Baldy Foundation hosted seven events in three days, including carnival-like festivities on the lighthouse grounds. Residents and visitors came to support Old Baldy and enjoy the fun and games, which included a magician, arts and crafts vendors, and plenty of food and drinks. Amy Alcocer, director of development for the Old Baldy Foundation, said the income from that weekend’s events would be used toward necessary lighthouse repairs addressing water infiltration issues. Looking around at the gathering, Alcocer smiled. “There’s just a lot of love for Old Baldy,” she said. “People choose this location for so many momentous occasions. They have children’s lighthouse-themed birthday parties here, and weddings with a miniature Old Baldy statue as the caketopper. People get engaged here and then come back with their kids years later.” In the Hollywood version of that example, actor Keith Harris and his wife Emily brought their children, Ehver, 7, and Elijah, 5, to the August festivities. Keith was in two movies filmed at Old Baldy, Pirate Kids and Pirate Kids: Blackbeard’s Lost Treasure. Keith said he and Emily came to visit the lighthouse when they were dating, and wanted to show their kids where the pirate scenes were shot. The kids were especially keen to find the one in which Blackbeard’s skull is discovered. Kim Mulherin, who was spending June through October of 2016 on her boat in the Bald Head Island Marina, enjoyed the day with her daughter Jackie and grandson Tavin, 6. “We love Bald Head Island and are all for contributing to keep it up and preserve it,” she said. “Old Baldy is one of our favorite lighthouses on the East Coast. She has a look like no other; a character all her own.”
The Harris family enjoyed the fun and games surrounding National Lighthouse Day, August 7, 2016.
AN INANIMATE OBJECT, A HUMAN TOUCH That personification of Old Baldy, as a grand and majestic lady, is common. But to Kim Gottshall and others, the real story of Old Baldy is the actual people who built her, saved her, and continue to care for her. A member of the Old Baldy Foundation Board of Directors since 2003, Gottshall first got involved with the foundation in 2000. “I was spending the summer on the island,” she said, “and one morning, while taking my daily walk, I stopped by the Keeper’s Cottage on a whim and asked ‘what can I do?’ I’ve been here ever since.” Gottshall makes her case for people as guardians for this symbolic structure, which was of course, originally built to protect human lives. “In the early days, it was the keepers and their families who were caretakers,” she said, “then the river pilots and lifesaving crews who objected to plans to abandon Old Baldy when the Cape Fear Light was built in 1903. “So many people have played a role,” she continued, “from everyone who worked to patch the failing stucco, to the longtime residents who would sweep up after
birds nested in the lighthouse, from those who submitted the paperwork to have Old Baldy declared a historic structure, to today’s small staff, board of directors and volunteers.” In fact, she summarized, everyone who ever paid admission to climb her or gave a dollar to help repair and restore her is part of Old Baldy’s story. “It’s incredible when you think about it, but where would Old Baldy be without all of these people,” Gottshall asked, “and what would Bald Head Island be without its lighthouse?”
WANT TO HELP SHINE THE LIGHT? You can support Old Baldy in various ways. Make a tax-deductible donation to: Old Baldy Foundation P.O. Box 3007, Bald Head Island, NC 28461 Volunteer your time at the lighthouse or in the gift shop, or ask the foundation for other ways to get involved. Purchase an annual family pass for only $100 and climb as often as you’d like. Buy a personalized, engraved brick for the memorial walkway around the oil house. Take a historic tour of the island. ald Head Island might seem like it’s a world away from the bustle and lights of South Beach and the oak-lined avenues of Savannah, but when Coastal Urge brings a little bit of BHI to the harbors of Baltimore and the cobblestones of Charleston with our mobile Boatiques, we don’t feel so far from home after all. In 2016 alone, we drove our decorated delivery vehicles— the custom golf carts you know and love to see scooting around the Island—to international boat shows and polo matches up and down the eastern seaboard, sharing our custom apparel and coastal lifestyle. Everywhere we went we saw friends from home—everyone, including us, looking forward to returning to BHI. There’s just something about the tidal flow of the salt marshes and breezes blowing through the Spanish moss covering the live oaks. Of the crunch of bike tires on gravel and the whoops of kiteboarders at East Beach. We’ve been working and playing on Bald Head since 2010, enjoying the active coastal lifestyle. Whether it’s pedaling our Townie bikes along the boardwalks or paddling the Sasquatch SUP with six of our friends, every day is an adventure. Our roots are in water sports, and we’ve been thrilled to bring the latest offerings to BHI. On your next visit, ask us how you can enjoy paddling and pedaling our gorgeous coastal paradise. We’re glad you’re here! And we’ll see you on the road when our Boatiques set off for new horizons.

AS THE PARENTS OF THREE TEEN-AGED BOYS, NASHVILLE RESIDENTS SCOTT AND JENNIFER BLACKMAN TAKE HOMEWORK SERIOUSLY. So when the time came to look for a second home at the beach, they did a thorough search, from Florida to the Carolinas. “I have great memories of my own childhood, staying with my grandparents on the Carolina coast,” said Scott. “Bald Head Island reminds me of those simpler times.” Once they were sold on Bald Head Island, they next had to choose which of its many neighborhoods suited them best. “We made a point of renting in various environments, so we could experience the whole island,” said Scott. “We saw the Inspired Home when it was nearly completed and we loved it. Then this site, on the corner and across from The Common, was available, and it was perfect.” As with all homeowners in the Southern Living Inspired Community at Cape Fear Station, the Blackmans worked closely with the builder and interior designer to make the home their own. With construction complete in May of 2016, the Blackmans moved in, becoming the community’s first family. Jennifer and the two youngest boys spent the entire summer on the island, while Scott and the oldest son balanced work and school commitments, visiting as often as possible. “When we are on the island,” said Scott, “we are wholly immersed and inspired to live it up. We surf, fish, get out on the boat. Just like when I was a child, we’re outdoors all day, enjoying it all.” 62

Ahhh...Sweet Summertime.
As my family and I relax on the ferry ride over to Bald Head Island, we talk about all the things we’ll do on the island this summer. “Mom, can I ride down to the Sail Shop and get a Luna Pop? ” asks my 10-year-old daughter Megan. This ritual is her favorite. “I want to jump off the dock,” Matthew, my energetic 13-year-old, tells me. As they go on about the many things they want to see and do on the island, I assure them we have plenty of time, we’ll get it all in. Every year when I ask my kids what they want to do this summer, the answer is always the same. “Go to Bald Head,” they tell me in tune with one another. For the past 15 years, my family has come to this magical place. After all this time, the island never fails to charm us, and with each visit our attachment grows stronger. Our lives on the mainland are so hectic that we love the slower pace that an island vacation brings. No schedules, just tides. No duties, just fun. No waiting in lines, no rushing here and there. The absence of cars automatically relaxes me. As we unload our stuff into our rental home for our annual month-long vacation, my kids’ phones start buzzing. Texts are coming in left and right, all from their summer friends. Let’s skateboard, let’s surf, let’s boogie board . . .. In short order their iPhones will get put away and be replaced by bikes, surfboards and skateboards as they reconnect with their friends. Returning to Bald Head over the years, we’ve been fortunate to meet families that value the island as much as we do. Many of us spend time together in the summer and then come back for long weekends and holidays throughout the year. One of my newest friends is Kelley Williams, whom I met through another island connection and who owns a second home in Surfman’s Walk. “We return to Bald Head every summer because we have developed an entire Bald Head family,” Kelley explains. “It’s an extension of who we are. We love that we can share this experience with people that feel the exact same way about a place that is so special and loved.”

After settling in and getting a good night’s sleep, our summer routine begins. Most days, like today, several of the summer kids meet up and head out on their own for breakfast. Milo, Carolina, Cora, Julia, Elena and Megan are given the freedom to ride their bikes through the forest canopy and down to the Maritime Market Cafe, their parents encouraging independence. The eldest member of the group is 12. “Here, they’re able to grow in a safe environment where they’re given freedom to explore and be who they are and learn and make mistakes, while we as parents are here to help them along,” says Amanda Bariglio, mother to Caden, 12, Carolina, 10, and Cora, 8. She and her husband were among the first families to purchase a home in Sumner’s Crescent almost a decade ago. While some of the kids are busy grabbing breakfast, another contingent heads to the shore to check out the waves and see which beach promises the best conditions for surfing. East Beach it is. The weather is beautiful and the day promises to be spectacular. 80
haven 81
As Caden, Matthew, Gavin, John and Jack paddle through the water on their boards, each anxious to catch the first wave, both their camaraderie and their competitiveness are evident. After breakfast, Carolina, Julia and Elena get in the water and show their stuff, too. Once they've caught a few swells, Matthew and Caden take to the shore to do a little skim boarding. As the waves die down, the rest of the kids come out of the water and the action moves to the sand. Pick-up games of whiffleball, soccer and paddleball have the entire crew playing together. “BHI is a throwback to my childhood. Our kids get the freedom to go, and as parents we enjoy the freedom of letting them go. This, being at the beach, is their camp, says Kelley, whose son Milo, 8, is right in the thick of it.
82
After several hours at East Beach, the kids are ravenous. Everyone begs to take a short ride up to Mike’s Bites for lunch. The boys head over together on bikes and the girls aren’t far behind. Hot dogs, ChocoTacos and Italian ice are a few of the kids’ go-to choices. “One of John’s favorite things about coming to Mike’s Bites on Bald Head is being called ‘Johnny Buns,’” Julie Daly laughs as she explains her 10-year-oldson’s nickname. “He always orders a hot dog ‘John’s Way,’ which is without the dog, so his friends started calling him Johnny Buns.” John grins and nods before biting into a bun holding ketchup and nothing else. “Good old fashioned fun like this, where they can ride to the store, ride their bikes to get ice cream and meet their friends to play are what we love about the island,” Tamara Pasin, Julia’s mom, tells me. The Pasins recently built a home along South Beach after renting for several years. “The kids have had the fondest memories the last couple of years. They’ve met a ton of friends and they can actually just be kids.” haven 85
T
The afternoon sun is high as the kids start discussing their next game plan. Sunset Celebration in the harbor, or “downtown” as some call it, is tonight. “If we head down there early, we can skateboard and play some football,” Matthew suggests to the boys. After bikes, skateboards are the preferred mode of transportation for these kids. Even the girls get in on it. As the group heads home to clean up, I pause and think about some of the conversations I’ve had with the other moms, each sharing the magnetic pull of the island. “After visiting several beaches in North Carolina, we found there was nothing else like Bald Head Island,” Kim Mathan, mother to Gavin, 13, and Elena, 10, told me earlier in the day.
86
haven 87
88
“I know of no other place where you can take a 20-minute ferry ride to relax and disconnect,” said Kim. “We bought here to create memories for our kids. In the coming years we hope to continue to come to Bald Head, to create new memories, and meet new people from all over the world.” As the moms reconvene near the harbor and the kids skateboard and play a little football, the sun starts its descent on West Beach. In short order, Sunset Celebration is in full swing—music blaring, hula hoops swirling, bonfire blazing. Cora and Julia get front and center to show off their moves. Then the party moves to the beach, and the long day climaxes with splashing in the surf and roasting s’mores around the fire.
haven 89
As the sky grows dark, I think about all the good times I’ve spent on this island and the long summer days left ahead for these lucky kids. Kelley echoes my thoughts when she speaks of friends who share a love of place. “Bald Head is a unique environment,” she says. “It’s for some, but not for everyone. When you find people that appreciate it and love it like you, it’s a joy to be able to spend the summer with them.” Right on cue, our friend Julie walks up, soaking up the scene. “Where else on Earth do the stars shine bright as lights?” she asks. I couldn’t agree more.

Anchoring the island’s harborside food scene are several restaurants that share a laid-back attitude but offer completely different menus. Delphina Cantina presents
Latin-inspired dishes made with love by Executive Chef Carlos Rojas and his talented kitchen staff. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, Carlos credits his grandmother with inspiring
him to become a chef. “It was amazing to watch her cook in an outdoor brick oven over an open fire,” he says. Delphina’s most popular menu items include the tequila-
marinated shrimp tacos and the Cubano, a twist on the classic Cuban sandwich. In the summertime, you’ll want to visit the restaurant’s nearby Luna Forest, an outdoor patio
with beaucoup atmosphere and ice cold beer, along with a wide variety of nibbles. Follow the smell of coffee and waffle cones to Sandpiper Ice Cream & Coffee, also
next door to Delphina. Early risers will appreciate its 7:30 a.m. opening time and
premium java, while late night snackers will happily wait in line for homemade ice cream and milk shakes. Yum!
A short walk away, you’ll find MoJo’s on the Harbor, operated by John and
Andrea Pitera. This lively, sprawling venue with indoor and outdoor tables serves
up, arguably, the island’s most dramatic water views. The menu is heavy on seafood, as you’d expect, but also has a nice selection of pasta dishes. If you’re here in the
warmer months, try the sushi and sashimi prepared by a master chef. Many evenings include live music, or later into the night, if the mood is right, karaoke. “We want you
to have fun, to party, to let loose a little bit,” says John. Right next door the Piteras have opened a new venture, Honey’s BBQ, where you can dine outside at picnic tables or
grab your meal to go. Along with pulled pork and brisket, the restaurant specializes in
slow-cooked ribs. Honey’s smokes its pork overnight, so when it’s gone, it’s gone. Call ahead to make sure you have your big family take-out order lined up.
In the warmer months, enjoy beer and wine while you watch the boats come and
go from the deck at Will o’ the Wisp, just around the corner from MoJo’s. A quick
call to Marina Pizza (operating out of Delphina’s kitchen), gets you an easy dinner delivered. Or simply snack on popcorn and nuts while you sip that Pinot.

Nestled in the middle of the island, you’ll find the
Maritime Market Café, recently expanded to be more than three times its previous size. A bank of
windows floods the cheerful space with light, and
you’ll also have your mood lifted by the salad bar, pizza by the slice, and array of gourmet sandwiches, wraps and burgers. If you plan to get an early start, the café can’t be beat for breakfast. Along with
everyday offerings like pancakes and biscuits, you’ll want to sample the chef’s daily specials, which could be stuffed French toast, a Belgian waffle or savory eggs Benedict. Owner Claude Pope is also known to host side-porch oyster roasts and wine dinners at the café on occasion, prepared by Executive Chef Chip Pridgen.
If you’re out on East Beach and find yourself
hungry, Mike’s Bites, located in a small brick
building near the foundation of the Cape Fear Light,
specializes in fresh sandwiches and hot dogs. Kids will love its wide variety of Italian ice flavors and popsicles, too.
A full or temporary membership (available through your rental company) opens the
door to three different dining venues at the Shoals Club, overlooking the Cape Fear Point. The most casual is the Sandbar Grille, located poolside. The grille’s menu presents
Caribbean, Asian, Southwest and local Cape Fear influences that focus on light, fresh
ingredients. Recent favorites include the jerk tuna sandwich with Hawaiian slaw and Chipotle aioli, and the Maine lobster salad with fresh basil, avocado, asparagus and
pine nuts. Don’t fear—if you have less adventurous palates in your party, chicken fingers, burgers and pizza are always available, too. 104
Watch the sun go down over the ocean while you dine
al fresco or in the lounge at Latitudes Wine Bar at the Shoals Club. The restaurant’s small plates may inspire
you to order several and share with your tablemates. Smoked trout with parsnip chips, spring rolls with lump
crab meat and prosciutto, and seasonal flatbreads
will make your mouth water. Oftentimes an acoustic guitarist lends additional atmosphere to the scene.
Don’t leave the island without experiencing
AQUA, the Shoals Club’s premier dining venue. Seafood lovers will swoon at the restaurant’s locally sourced fish and shellfish. Club Chef Caitlyn Fisher
relies heavily on local vegetables and cheeses, too, so the menu changes with the seasons. “We’ll be emphasizing locally sourced ingredients even more in 2017,” says the chef. If you don’t enjoy seafood, a beautifully prepared beef filet typically appears on the
menu, along with creative options for vegetarians like an end-of-summer tart made with homemade goat cheese and ricotta custard with roasted vegetables.
Located along South Beach, the Bald Head
Island Club offers several dining options for members
and temporary members. The casual Pelicatessen, known by locals simply as the Peli, is open year-round for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Along with kid-friendly
grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken fingers and
burgers, you’ll find fried seafood baskets, gourmet
sandwiches and lighter salads. Their pizzas are popular as well, with gluten-free varieties available.
The Palms and Palms Terrace at the Club provide
a pub-style atmosphere and the convenience of open
seating—no reservations required for lunch or dinner. Along with a hearty meal, you’ll enjoy the views of
the croquet greensward and golf holes #10 and #18. CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: THE NEWLY EXPANDED MARITIME MARKET CAFÉ; BEEF TENDERLOIN FILET AT THE SHOALS CLUB’S AQUA; SMALL PLATES AND A TALL DRINK AT LATITUDES; CAROLINA OYSTERS FROM THE GRILLE AT THE BHI CLUB
Steak lovers will appreciate the variety of cuts offered
here, along with pork, lamb and veal chops. Seafood is always on the menu, too, with grouper and mahi-
mahi especially popular. Stop by the Sunday brunch buffet at The Palms and grab a seat on the terrace for a perfect start to your day.
Club dining becomes more upscale at The Grille,
open for lunch and dinner. Start with the roasted Carolina oysters and you can’t go wrong. Make sure someone in your party orders the cioppino, a fennel-
tomato broth seasoned with garlic and Sauvignon
blanc brimming with mussels, clams, shrimp, halibut and lobster. Duck breast, osso bucco and your choice of steak cuts round out the menu. Bon appetit!

fter sailing their 40-foot sloop “Soothsayre” from the Chesapeake Bay throughout the Bahamas for two years, Wendy Wilmot and her husband Andy Sayre navigated their course to Bald Head Island. In July of 1995, they pulled into their slip and put down roots calling Bald Head homeport for the first time since Andy’s initial purchase in 1984.
Navigate Your Way To A New Island Treasure: Antique Maps & More Andy and Wendy enjoy being a part of the Island community and all the Island has to offer. Andy has been in construction and real estate development his entire professional life. Here on Bald Head Island, he has served on the Village Council since 1997 and as Mayor since 2009. Since 1996, Wendy has been selling properties on Bald Head Island and in 2004 she started her own company, Wendy Wilmot Properties. The WWP Team is a friendly group of local personalities with unparalleled Island knowledge. WWP expanded into Vacation Rentals in 2011 and into Private Home Care in 2012 to offer additional services to their growing clientele. Now in 2017, Wendy and Andy are adding an exciting new retail enterprise headquartered at 6D Merchants Row: Antique Maps and More! “Antique Maps & More is a new venture for us,” said Andy. “We aren’t map experts, but we are enthusiasts. Our search for historical maps has allowed us to combine our love of travel with our appreciation for BHI’s history. We’ve met some fascinating people who had maps of the Cape Fear Region, but no real knowledge of Bald Head Island.”

The store’s location at 6D Merchants Row, next door to All About Art, makes shopping easy for all types of art and Island memorabilia. Aside from selling historic maps, Antique Maps & More offers complimentary Scavenger Hunt maps, Nature Maps and the famed WWP real estate maps. Created with exceptional detail, these maps are excellent navigational tools for people wishing to look at real estate, and they provide for family fun for groups wanting to learn more about the Island. “We invite folks to stop by and share their interests with us,” said Wendy “and we’re always thrilled to share our expertise of Bald Head Island.”
Located on the first floor of WWP’s offices, the store features handsomely framed maps spanning several centuries; produced not only in America, but also from several European countries. The oldest map dates to 1610. “Bald Head Island is filled with stories, legends and myths,” said Wendy. “Maps can take you back in history In Antique Maps & More, you’ll find: BestOfBaldHead.com 910.470.0000 6D Merchants Row

Of course Neverland had been make-believe in those days; but it was real now . . . - J.M. BARRIE
By Josh Durham
EVERY TIME I WATCH THE FERRY’S WIDE WAKE push Southport, and the mainland, further away, I am reminded of the world J.M. Barrie created more than a hundred years ago. Neverland. Barrie described it as magical place in which there are not “tedious distances between one adventure and another.” Bald Head is likewise such a place. It is full of adventures, and it takes very little effort for my children and me to find them. We bike. We climb Old Baldy. We explore. We ride the waves. Sometimes we even see pirates. And, of course, on Neverland, time permits our hero, Peter Pan, to never grow up. On the mainland, time affords us no such luxury. It moves so much differently there, quickly and quietly robbing us of our years. We know too well that time does this, yet we are always surprised at just how easily it accomplishes its task, especially when our long ago days seem so close and the details so clear that we might, if we tried, reach out and touch them. But we know we can’t, because time has claimed those days for itself. On Bald Head, we need not worry. Time on the island is much more kind, and it allows us to feel each moment so much more deeply. I remember well the day we took this picture and how our daughter, with her toes in the Bald Head waters, was having the time of her not fully two-year-old life. I can just make out her
last word
smile in this image, and I believe if we’d somehow been able to stay that she would have remained like this forever. Such is how time is here on our family’s Neverland. Anyone who visits, though, will hear a different name for Bald Head’s magic. The islanders and regulars, inspired by the endangered loggerhead turtles that nest here during the summer, and which have become the unofficial mascot for the island, call the magic “Turtle Time.” People here are proud there is no hustle and bustle, and for them Turtle Time perfectly equates the slow moving style of these magnificent creatures to Bald Head’s laidback, stress-free vacations. But I have found from my time here that there is more to it than that. After about fifty to sixty days in their nest, baby sea turtles hatch, dig themselves from the sand, and make their slow way to the ocean. Three days after any nest hatches, staff from the Bald Head Island Conservancy dig out the nest to determine exactly how many eggs hatched. They also look for any hatchlings that, perhaps not in any rush themselves, have yet to break through the sand. These the staff help along to the water’s edge. We are fortunate to have seen many of these excavations, and we applaud at each when the turtles reach the water to begin their lives at sea. In the years to come, they will travel thousands of miles, and many of them, when they are older, will return to nest at the very spot from which they hatched. In this is what I believe to be the true meaning of Turtle Time. Bald Head Island becomes so much of who we are. Just as it does for the sea turtles, Bald Head claims us, and it claims us so completely that no matter where our lives may take us, and no matter the many miles we surely will roam, we will always hear its call to return. We hear it on the mainland, where time has so quickly made us older. Our two boys, not even born when we took this picture, are in sixth and third grades. Our daughter, this little girl, is now in high school. When we answer Bald Head’s call to return, we all find so easily those same joys and smiles that we found in our first times here. On this year’s family trip, as we play together in the surf, happily greeting each wave as it comes, I give thanks for that call and the magic of this place. Because it is as though we have never left and as though we have never grown up. haven 127
