R O TA R Y NEWS World Polio Day: October 24 Polio Poliomyelitis, or polio, is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. Poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in hours. It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable. Unlike most diseases, polio can be eradicated.

governments to contribute more than $8 billion to the effort. Polio Today With our partners, we have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent, from 350,000 cases in 125 countries in 1988 to just 33 cases caused by the wild virus in 2018. Only two countries continue to report cases of wild poliovirus: Afghanistan and Pakistan. The infrastructure we helped build to end polio is also being used to treat and prevent other diseases and create lasting impact in other areas of public health.

boxing great Manny Pacquiao; pop star Psy; golf legend Jack Nicklaus; conservationist Jane Goodall; premier violinist Itzhak Perlman; Grammy Award winners A.R. Rahman, Angélique Kidjo, and Ziggy Marley; and peace advocate Queen Noor of Jordan. These ambassadors help Rotary educate the public about the disease and the fight to end polio for good.

Challenges Rotary and our partners have made tremendous progress against polio, but eliminating all cases is going to take even more progress and perseverance. Afghanistan and Pakistan face unique challenges, including political insecurity, highly mobile populations, difficult terrain, and, in some instances, logistical barriers. With sufficient resources, the commitment of national governments, and innovations that improve access to remote areas, we are optimistic that we can eliminate polio. Ensuring Success Rotary has committed to raising $50 million per year for polio eradication. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to match that 2-to-1, for a total commitment of $150 million each year. These funds provide much-needed operational support, medical workers, laboratory equipment, and educational materials. Governments, corporations, and private donors all play a crucial role in funding.

PolioPlus For more than 30 years, Rotary and our partners have driven the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. Our PolioPlus program was the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication by vaccinating children on a massive scale. As a core partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary focuses on advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and awareness-building. Rotary members have contributed $1.9 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by

Rotary in Action More than 1 million Rotary members have donated their time and money to eradicate polio, and every year, hundreds of member’s work with health workers to vaccinate children in countries affected by polio. Rotary members work with UNICEF and other partners to prepare and distribute informational materials for people in areas that are isolated by conflict, geography, or poverty. They also mobilize to recruit fellow volunteers, assist in transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support. Celebrity Support Rotary has a growing list of public figures and celebrities who support our fight against polio, including Bill Gates, cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; actresses Kristen Bell and Archie Panjabi; actor and wrestling superstar John Cena; supermodel Isabeli Fontana; Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu; action-movie star Jackie Chan; actor Donald Sutherland;

Restaurant & Food

Restaurant Review More than just Pizza! Da Maria identifies as a pizza house, but it is much more than that! Without doubt its Naples style pizzas with their 24 hour fermented pizza dough base, baked over lava stones, are different to what is normally available in Bali. However this luxury restaurant also serves fine Italian fare, other than just pizzas. Diners not used to Italian cuisine are often c o n f u s e d with the offerings of many courses, but the portion size is usually small, so many different tastes can be enjoyed. However if you want a more complete entrée then look at the menu titled Assaggini, offering selections of a number of different small tastes. This may be a Salumi plate of Mortadella, bresaola and salami or Roasted beetroot with ricotta salad and radicchio, Calamari, ink aioli and rocket or Asparagus, seaweed aioli and parmesan. The Classic traditional entrees of Arrancini and Prosciutto Crudo are also available. Crudo is often referred to as Italian Sashimi. However it is quite different. Yes, it is mostly seafood and served raw but it has been dressed with a cold-pressed virgin olive oil. At Da Maria there is quite a selection of Crudo. The Scallop is also with fennel and lemon confit, Snapper with tomato and chilli, Tuna with roasted peppers and sherry vinegar, Coral Trout with chilli paste and spring onions and the Beef Tartare with mustard seeds and parmesan. Whatever you order for entrees you will also need a side order of bread and here there are two great breads baked in house. A Focaccia with olive oil, rosemary and sea salt or the very special crunchy Italian Schiacciatina with oregano and a garlic infused olive oil. A serving of pasta or two are essential ingredients for any Italian dinner. In house made pasta at Da Marie can be a perfect Pappardelle which is served with a braised shin ragu. The wide strip pasta is perfect for this meat sauce. No real Italian restaurant would ever serve a meat sauce [Bolognese] with spaghetti or any thin strip pasta. The excellent Gnocchi is also house made, and is served with a braised lamb ragu and olives.

Other pastas include Tortellini [stuffed with prawn meat], served with fermented chilli butter and basil, Ravioli [stuffed with roasted pumpkin] with ricotta and lemon butter and Spaghetti Vongole [clams] with white wine and parsley. The popular ear-shaped pasta from the south Orecchietti is with broccoli, strachiatella and dried chilli. For mains the fish of the day is cooked skin on which is cooked to a crisp. The Pork Belly is wood-fired and surprisingly not too fatty. It comes with onion and beetroot. In fact it is the crispiest pork belly that I have ever had. The Chicken Cutlets are also good and they are with capers, oregano and lemon. There are usually also a couple of special mains on the daily menu as well. Steaks are all Black Angus and can be fillet, sirloin or rib-eye. All are grilled and served with a crispy polenta and spinach, topped with a pepper sauce. There are a variety of side dishes [even French Fries, if you must], the shaved pickled cabbage with parmesan and virgin extra olive oil being the standout. And then there is pizza, which is served any time including late at night. It is true Napoli style using pizza dough that has been fermented for 24 hours and cooked over lava stones.

: Special place for a special occasion.

Your pizza can be just a simple Margherita or a more exotic combination if you are prepared to pay Rp.200,000 for it, Whilst true Mozzarella [buffalo milk] is not always available, cow’s milk variations such as ‘fior di latte’ is often used as it is here with Da Maria’s Margherita. Other pizzas with ‘fior di latte’ include Formaggi [3 cheeses; gorgonzola, emmental and parmesan], Cotto [ham, mushrooms and oregano] and Salami. Other pizzas can be a Marinara [with anchovies], Salsiccia [pork and fennel sausage], Funghi [with mushrooms, lemon ricotta and sage] or Gamberini [prawns and fermented chilli]. There is no doubt that the Pizzas are the main attraction here, in fact dinners of pasta and pizza seems to be the norm, as both are truly sensational. The desserts or Dolci, are very Italian headed by a Polenta and Lemon syrup cake, with yoghurt ice cream, sticky, sweet and wonderful. The Cannoli is lemon and pistachio with chocolate and hazelnut, As always a Tiramisu [very good] and gelato selection and that New York café special, Affogato. Late in the evening [after 10.00] the place is re-arranged and becomes a late night venue with DJ, dancing, etc., and from then on the only food served are the pizzas! Limited, but quality, Italian dining for that very special occasion.

CANGGU NEWS Riding To Keep A Roof Over Their Heads What began as a novel idea for fitness fans to ride for life appears to have become a regular fundraising event and the pint-sized residents of Bali Mother & Baby House aren’t complaining. Over 50 riders attended the three silent spin sessions, each donning headphones and climbing onto their saddles to raise much needed funds for some very special kids. From an observer’s perspective, the scene was a little strange as the only noises to be heard were the whirr of wheels, some serious puffing and the calls of encouragement from head honcho Pete! Albeit stationary, cyclists rode toward the sunset with tunes in their ears, a bird’s eye view of the beach and the knowledge that their efforts were all for a worthy cause!

Akin to a silent disco, Friday September 13 at The W Hotel was more like a workout on wheels! It was the second Silent Spin collaboration for W Hotel Seminyak and 15Fit proprietors Pete and Yvette Manuel and like last time it was a resounding success, raising Rp 15,000,000 for an awesome cause.

Pete and Yvette recently paid a visit to the Bali Mother & Baby House to present a donation of Rp 15,000,000.00 to the charity, enabling them to cover rent payments for more months to come. Founded in 2016 by a Balinese woman who continues to operate the house with a small committee of expats and three amazing staff, The Bali Mother & Baby House survives purely on donations. Check them out on Facebook @balimotherandbabyhouse or email: karen@karensims.com.au 15Fit would like to extend a huge thank you to all who supported the event.

Monez Draws on Balinese Folklore to Create Art with a Twist Ida Bagus Ratu Antoni Putra, popularly known as Monez, is one half of the duo behind the recent installation art at Bali International Airport. While the piece is a timely critique of Bali’s plastic waste crisis, Monez has been creating illustrations and murals inspired by his island home, and particularly its fables and folktales, for over a decade. Born and raised in Bali, Monez inherited his passion for art from his grandfather who was a traditional painter. Unlike his grandfather, however, Monez lacked what he refers to as “the ability to draw in proportion.” As such, he initially focused on graphic design rather than illustration, believing that those were supposed to be “perfect, realistic pictures.” During a stint at a garment factory, where he learnt about pattern design and coloring techniques, Monez realized that his drawings do not have to conform to what most other artists are producing, setting off a chain of events that would lead him to his current success. Monez recently collaborated with Marmar, one of the first ogoh-ogoh artists not to use Styrofoam in his pieces, to design and create an installation from around 3,500 pieces of plastic waste. The 3D piece, which took four months to complete, is on show at Bali International Airport until 31 October 2019. Monez says that the installation aims to connect. Bali’s plastic waste problem with its trademark as a world-class surf destination. “Marmar and I used surfing and the shape of waves as our theme,” says Monez. “I think that the Bali Airport, as an international hub, is a perfect place for this installation that bringing the message of reducing the use of single-use plastic to the world. For us Balinese, the installation is also a reminder that Bali is our home and it is our responsibility to take care of it.” Just like Monez’s latest work, his whole artistic style, which

he calls Fablelous—a play on the words fable and fabulous— is influenced by the island that stands at the core of his heart. Perhaps it was Monez’s lack of the ability to draw in the realistic style that encouraged him to look to Balinese folklore and mythological creatures for inspiration. He says that as a child he was particularly taken by the tale about tonya or memedi, an “unseen creature” that roams the island, kidnapping children to take them to another dimension. As such, it is not surprising that Monez’s art world is filled with colorful monsters—however, this time most with a friendly disposition. In a similar spirit, Monez’s apparel brand MONSTERO, which he set up in 2009, has been inspired by overcoming one’s fears—whether it be of childhood monsters or more modern limitations. “Bali is an abundant source of ideas, from folklore to our traditional dance. It’s a unique blend that continually inspires me to produce new images,” he says. “I use MONSTERO as a platform to inspire other Balinese artists to incorporate their artworks into apparel that in the end will align with the fashion industry.” Monez’s illustrations can be found in books, while his largescale murals grace the walls of numerous Bali restaurant and hotels such as Folie Kitchen in Canggu and Anja Jimbaran. He has also created illustrations to promote Bali’s “night at the zoo” tours. Once inspired by the characters in his childhood books, Monez has recently created illustrations for a children’s book entitled How I Send My Hug Around the World. “This is my first children’s book project. I was very excited to work on it. It took about a year for me and Donna Conrad, as a writer, to finish this book,” he says. “The book features a very valuable message for children. It tells how a

small act of kindness, such as a hug, can have a positive influence on our surroundings and the environment.” Last year, as a part of the Singapore Art Week, Monez collaborated with Apple to lead an art class, teaching participants how to use Affinity Photo for iPad to create illustrations, something he refers to as a major career step. Monez says that he now also does a lot of his work digitally on an iPad Pro, as he feels that it offers a more practical way of producing art, making it both easy to edit and print. “Sharing is one of my ways of giving something back to the community, especially the creative community. I particularly enjoyed sharing my knowledge at the event in Singapore, which was attended by such a wide range of people from different age groups and backgrounds,” he says. “I taught them to create monsters using Affinity Photo. I think they were surprised about how well their work turned out and how easy it was to create.” With such a diverse portfolio of work, it will be interesting to see in which direction Monez’s work progresses. His oeuvre is increasingly becoming more visible both in Bali and the region, including Malaysia where he recently had an exhibition. He is also appearing at the Frankfurt Book Fair this month. Most significantly, however, Monez says that his art has taught him the most important skills of all—to imagine and have fun. “When you are in the creative industry, skill is not everything. It must go along with the right attitude and commitment.” By Anita Copyright © 2019 Bali Advertiser You can read all past articles of BA Feature Article at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

Bali For Kids

A young friend of mine is really into skateboarding at the moment. Apparently, there is a large skateboarding community, both kids and grownups, in Bali. So this month, I am featuring a selection of skate parks around Bali. My daughter is also a keen roller skater and I’ve learned that skate parks are also for kids (or adults) using inline or roller skates, not just skate boards. ****************************************************************

lessons as well as intensive skateboard camps for both kids and grownups. Blue Bear holds beginner to advanced skateboarding classes. Private lessons starts at IDR 200k per hour and group lessons at IDR 180k per person per hour. School lessons are held Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 6:00 pm. Their skate shop offers sales and rental of skateboards, gear and clothing. Blue Bear supports local graphic designers by selling decks, T’s and accessories with their artwork. The skate park is open Monday to Sunday from 9:00 to 10:00 pm. On Wednesdays and Special Event Days, the park is open from 9:00 am to midnight. Admission is IDR 25,000 and, best of all, if you bring 10 pieces of plastic trash to recycle, admission is free.

Amplitude

The Amplitude is a skate and biking park in Kerobokan. You can use skateboards, kickboards, cruisers, BMX, mountains bikes or inline skates. The 3000 square meter facility has a street course on one side and a pump track with a large skate bowl in the middle on the other side. The pump track is a looped circuit of berms and rollers, designed for anything on wheels that is human propelled. The racing pump track was the first in Indonesia to be designed and constructed by the Swiss firm, Velosolutions, which designs courses for mountain bikes. Two riders can share the pump track at the same time by using different lanes. Amplitude also runs a skating school for all ages, styles and levels. Professional skateboard coaches train in small groups (maximum four) or private lessons. Group classes starts at IDR 400,000 per person for two hours and private classes starts at IDR 1,400,000 per person for 2 hours. Classes are held three times daily: at 10:00 am, 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Kids have to be at least 4 years of age to learn. Students must bring a skateboard and elbow, knee and wrist pads and helmet, or rent equipment from the on-site skate shop. There is a small coffee shop / café on the premises, serving coffee, drinks and light meals.

For general enquiries, call +62 813 3849 6674 and for lesson booking and the skate shop call +62 821 4661 5050. You can also check out their website at https://www. bluebearbali.com. At Home in Bali

Design ideas and inspiration for tropical living

How to Shop for Homewares Like A Pro Anyone who has hosted family and friends on a Bali holiday will be familiar with the question, “Where did you get this plate/painting/basket/chair (fill in the blank), and where can I buy it?” How do you help people shop for homewares and lifestyle treasures to take home with them? Who better to ask than my friend Karen, the creator of the six-bedroom boutique hotel Kano Sari – No 1 or No 2 on Trip Advisor since 2016 — and organiser of epic shopping trips for her guests. Give us some background to Kano Sari

Why did you start offering shopping trips? Because so many guests asked us! As Kano Sari seems more like a home than a hotel, I think guests are very attracted to what we’ve done and want to bring something home with them. When we first opened in 2014, all the tableware came from Bali Zen in Ubud. I can’t remember how many guests we have taken there to buy everything from napkins to breakfast settings in our turquoise and blue colours!

I fell in love with Bali on my first visit in 1977 and returned regularly over the next three decades. In 2010 we decided to create a holiday house that we could come back and forth to and eventually retire to. But the project took on a life of its own, became something bigger than we would ever need, and eventually evolved into a luxury guesthouse. What was your initial inspiration? Old Bali luxe – the relaxed vibe of lovely old guest houses, notably Honeymoon Guesthouse where I lived for six months while we were building. I wanted to create somewhere intimate and timeless. I also wanted to feel part of the community, part of our village streetscape. So we were sensitive right from the start and keen to get our local community and craftsmen involved. We also sourced nearly all the building materials from Bali, as well as the furniture, soft furnishings, and light fittings. But the marble came from Sulawesi, where my parents lived in the 70s. How poetic that Sulawesi marble is the foundation of Kano Sari as well as the foundation of my love of Bali! One of the joys of building in Bali is that so much can be done on the fly; instead of regulatory hoops to jump through before making changes to the original plan, you just scratch your head and get on with it. Even as it was morphing from holiday home to guest house, I knew what I wanted it to be: a true home-from-home. Each time I hear a guest exclaim “It’s like staying in our own villa”, I know we have succeeded. What makes Kano Sari so special? What keeps you a Trip Advisor favourite? For guests, it is all down to attention to detail, the little things. In designing the rooms I took into account those details I appreciated in a hotel room, as well as what annoyed me …. And I asked friends what they would want too. With only six rooms, we could individualise each one, from the floor plan itself to the furnishings. But common to all six are high quality amenities, power adaptors, a plentiful supply of filtered water, wet wipes, excellent WIFI, sarongs for the swimming pool and different adat sarongs for temple ceremonies. “You have thought of everything” is what I like to hear guests say”!

It’s always exciting shopping on Jalan Sulawesi. A favourite is Toko Maju, known for its fabulous batik fabric ...and its ever-increasing feline assistants!

On her own admission, a recent guest from the UK had been ‘stalking’ us on Facebook before her stay, professed to love our style, and asked for design tips for the new home she and her husband had moved into a few weeks before… she had even brought the house plans! The upshot was that, a couple of shopping days later, nine cubic metres of Bali products – bar stools, dining chairs and cane pieces – were on their way to Birmingham! More often than not, guests are wanting to buy something for their own homes. We have had guests on a buying trip for their upscale homewares shop in New South Wales. They were intending to buy at high end retailers in Seminyak, so were thrilled to discover that we could lead them to the manufacturers themselves. What is the benefit of shopping with Kano Sari? In a nutshell, contacts, credentials, and buying power; we know where to shop, and how to get the best price that are fair to everyone. It’s the difference between shopping retail or wholesale. Business owners know us as long-standing customers; they accord our guests the same courtesies – and still give a great price even for a small order. This cuts through all that angst of not knowing what a fair price is.

What’s the most unusual piece you’ve helped a guest buy? Recent guests loved their suite bed so much that they wanted one for themselves. We ended up sourcing and shipping six King Koil beds to Australia; even with shipping, it was so much cheaper than buying a bed of comparable quality there. What are your favourite shopping destinations? It’s always nice to visit Seminyak stalwarts like Kim Soo and Bungalow Living; they both have a cafe, so you can spend a pleasant few hours whetting your appetite with beautifully curated homewares over a coffee and cake. But really, there’s not much you can’t find in and around Ubud. Sometimes we will take guests on a drive down the Mas road to see the glass-blowing – you’d be amazed at how many people want to take home our artisanal glass vases and candle holders! We’ll inevitably pop into The Object to admire their amazingly inventive objects d’art; most people wouldn’t have the space – or funds – for one of their collectibles, but it’s a great place for inspiration. And a reminder that you can find practically anything in Bali, however whacky. Want a life-size patchwork-metal giraffe? A hippo carved out of wood with a leather padded seat hand-painted with orchids? No problem! We’ve taken at least six sets of guests to In Design, where they’ve purchased the same copper pendant lamps that hang over our communal dining table. And two galleries in Sanggingan are popular with our guests who like the paintings we have in the communal areas. But most of the homewares they like have been custom-made to our design, so can’t be bought ‘off the peg’. We’re happy to share our resources with guests, so we take them to Sukawati for quilted bed covers, to Gianyar for beautifully caved teakwood bedheads, to Alta Moda and Jalan Sulawesi for fabric – and then to D&L who transform the fabric to Kano Sari-designed cushions and bedrunners. What is the one thing you think a guest should buy for their home while in Bali? This is so personal! I would say anything that makes your heart sing…. that you know will make you smile every time you see it, and will bring back happy memories of your holiday in Bali. Building & Maintenance

GARDEN DOCTOR Protecting Plants From Pest Attacks ‘Hello Garden Doctor! Two weeks ago, a couple of our little white flower bushes by our swimming pool which are in raised circular potters started yellowing and slowly wilting/dying. We fertilized thinking it would help but instead they appear dead. We noticed ants going to and from forming a highway between two potters in front of our big bale. This afternoon I removed a small bromeliad looking plant growing underneath one of the flower bushes thinking the ants could be attracted to the sap of the non-flower bush. To our surprise we revealed a heap of little mini 1.5cm snails with a long skinny yellowish-brown cone shell! I think perhaps the ants are loving the snail poo because I found that the only 2 planters that had ants going in them had the snails in. One planter more than the other. Being unfamiliar with Indonesia’s little critters and land compositions I need some guidance for the best step forward to keep my garden thriving. The issue has just begun to show itself to be severe and deadly to our plant family! HOW DO WE GET RID OF THESE SNAILS/ANTS AND SAVE OUR GARDEN FROM A MASS INFESTATION!? Attached is some evidence of the suspects and the crime scene. Thank you so much for your time! Looking forward to your reply! Jet from Seminyak’ Thanks for the interesting question - I think you have two separate unrelated issues going on with the ants and the snails. Ants go after anything sweet. Whenever you see a large population of ants in and around your plants its usually an indication that you have an aphid or scale insect infestation. So whilst it’s not the ants that are causing the initial problem, they can exacerbate it, which I will get to a bit later. Aphids and scale insects are tiny bugs usually only a few mm in size. Aphids are commonly green to brown and camouflage themselves very well, whereas scale insects generally will show up as white, beige to brown in colour. These bugs cleverly reside on the undersides of the leaves so they can go about their business of sucking out the fresh sap from the leaves in secret, placing the plant under severe stress - essentially they are stealing the plants nutrition. By the time that you’ve realised this, the plants could be dead and the bugs already moved onto the next victim. Aphids and scales can rapidly decimate plants and their populations can explode into plague like proportions in just a matter of a few days.

Anywhere you have ant problems get some chalk and start drawing barriers to the ants. Draw a circle around an ant and watch what happens! I’m suggestion that you draw chalk lines around your pots to stop the ants migrating back and forth, draw chalk barriers wherever you don’t want them. Of course, after rain or every few days you may need to re-apply. It’s kind of amusing when you first start experimenting with this. The chalk deterrent is also useful in the home as a good way to stop them entering the house for example through a crack in the wall. Just draw a circle around the crack or a barrier line wherever they are entering. As for the snails, well it makes sense that they would be hiding around bromeliads or strappy type leafed plants. Snails are molluscs and like a dark moist environment for protection and to avoid drying out. They will hide under leaf litter, dark places and cover that keeps them moist. The snails in the pictures you have sent look like decollate snail (Rumina decollata) with the conical shell. They are omnivores, so they will eat plants and other snails. If there are no brown garden snails to eat or other alternatives this snail is going to eat your plants and they can cause serious damage quickly. The easy fix is snail pellets, though not my preferred choice, especially if you have children and pets to consider. Laying down a dry rough mulch such as jagged bark mulch is one way to deter snails or even crushed eggshells or shell grit mulch, as they don’t like to crawl across the sharp jagged edges which probably feels like razor blades to them and their delicate slimy exterior. Snails prefer cool, dark, moist places to hide out, so by creating these locations in the garden you can locate the snails and dispose of them. Upturned terracotta pots are a good snail trap, check every few days and you’ll find them congregating inside. Orange or any other citrus halves with the pulp scooped out is another known trap method. Leave them face down in the garden bed slightly propped up with a small gap for the snails to enter. Finally, the snail beer trap is the easiest way to take them out. A container, jar or a plastic bottle cut in half and then placed in the garden filled with a cup of beer is irresistible to snails and slugs. Dig it in level with the soil so they can easily enter – they love the yeast. Snails can easily be removed using the combination of methods - hand picking, trapping, barriers, and bait/pellets. Modifying habitats can help prevent snail plagues by removal of hiding places such as thick clumps of vegetation, empty pots lying around and by using a rough dry mulch. Dr. Kris Garden Doctor Contact: gardendoctor@hotmail.com Copyright © 2019 Dr. Kris You can read all past articles of Garden Doctor at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

As the bugs consume the sap, the excrete a sweet ‘honeydew’ waste by-product, and ants absolutely love it. So of course, they move in to consume it - for them it’s like the sugar pot has been left out in the garden. From here a symbiotic relationship develops between the bugs and the ants, whereby the ants protect the sap sucking bugs and even transport them around to other sites to send the honeydew production into overdrive - it’s an ant farm of a different type that you won’t like! If you ever see ants crawling up and down stems and across leaves alarm bells should be ringing as it’s the first sign that you have a problem. Ants are typically found on the ground and will only inhabit plants if there is a honeydew source, which means either aphids or other types of scale insects have moved in. A quick check of the growing tips and the undersides of foliage will likely reveal the bugs. They say where there’s smoke there’s fire, well where there’s ants on your plants you probably have a sap sucking insect problem. So first, to get to the aphids and scales you will need to check the undersides of the leaves. In the initial stages hosing with a fast jet of water underneath the leaves could be enough to rid a small infestation, but as your plants are dying and the infestation is severe its probably best to spray with an organic pesticide such as white oil or neem oil that is available at hardware and garden centres. As the ants may be in on the deal, protecting, transporting and farming the bugs around you should probably deter them also. Ants generally don’t like moist conditions, keep the soil around your plants well-watered directly to the root-zone so you don’t wash off the pesticide. Here’s another tip. Plain old chalk used to write on chalkboards is all that’s needed to keep the ants away. Ants will not walk through a line of powdery material such as chalk dust or talcum powder. Test it and see!

Body & Spirit

Alternative Voice Goodbye Holly Golightly, Goodbye Marlboro Man... One of the more solitary small pleasures I enjoy throughout the week is settling down to a good read with the Weekend FT in a café serving half decent coffee. Apart from the cringingly ghastly “How to Spend it”, the magazine supplement written by FT hacks with leaden wit and obvious contempt for their readers - by definition themselves possessing no style of their own and in need of being told “where to get it”, the rest of the newspaper provides some first rate long form and investigative journalism covering life in general , beyond the financial. Since the FT content is behind a pay wall and I have no interest in the weekday newspaper itself, it’s not worth my stumping up for a subscription. Fortunately for me the weekend print edition is usually on sale at Periplus bookshops around Bali.

In this instance, I just adjusted my chair so I had my back to the man and instead of resuming my reading, forgot about the vapours and fell into a reverie upon life and tobacco over past decades. One way or another, smoker or not, tobacco affected us all. Its aroma and its advertisement, an ever-present factor in our lives. The habit has been around a long time. King James 1st of England (1603-25) not only fulminated against the noxious weed but cut off the head of the man who brought it back from the Americas. It was the introduction of cigarettes, which really kicked tobacco industry into the big league, on a par with oil, coal and transportation. By the 1930s smoking cigarettes was the social norm. It was permitted and catered to almost everywhere. The whole world stank of it. We did, so did our clothes and our homes.

On one occasion, seated at a table on the deck of the Starbucks in Renon Plaza, engrossed in a good read trying to control the flyaway pages of my newspaper I was enveloped in a cloud of smoke. I was partly aware that a dapper Indonesian man in his early thirties had arrived and sat down at an adjoining table, put down his coffee, opened his lap top, and positioned his handphone together with some other device alongside. Preparing to be irked and ready to rustle the pages of my broadsheet ostentatiously enough to attract attention for a warm-up death glare, I realised that the smoke didn’t actually reek of tobacco, as I had automatically assumed it would. As I was registering this, the man raised a small expensive-looking rectangular black and silver object to his mouth and took a toke. Upon exhale an astonishingly copious cloud of vapour billowed forth, was taken by the wind toward and past myself, on to envelop other tables nearby, only dissipating on the far side of the deck. Impressive in its way. What kind of a storm cloud, I wondered, would a party of half-a-dozen such tokers emit? What about the proverbial smoke-filled back rooms be like? Would they be able to see other? It wasn’t that I was completely unaware. I knew smoking had evolved and that the tobacco barons had developed new ways to attract and addict a younger clientele in the delivery of nicotine, while extending their questionable business ethics into other less lethal areas of business. In fact, I had even read about just that very thing in a previous issue of the FT, to the effect that the big tobacco majors were now concentrating on e-cigarettes and vaping, sales of which now stood at some US$16 billion and expected to treble to over $40 billion in four years. The only clouds on that horizon being a growing international movement to regulate the sale of these products.

We just didn’t realise it. In hindsight one has has to wonder how a non-smoker managed to get through life in such a tobacco-ridden environment. Think of the allure of a beautiful and elegant woman smoking a cigarette, a not uncommon and powerful image back then. As a red-blooded nonsmoking man how in reality, if your dreams came true, would you be able to make love to that woman? And don’t let’s be gender specific here – it works everywhich way. By 1950 the British Medical Association( BMA)sounded the death knell for tobacco’s glory days, announcing conclusive evidence to show that cigarettes caused lung cancer. To prove the point King George VI of England died of lung cancer in 1952 at the age of 56. Not long after his daughter made a point of revoking the Royal Seal of Approval carried by Benson & Hedges and other British brands. She had good cause to believe the BMA. Nonetheless there followed a vicious 50-year campaign of huge mendacity waged by Big Tobacco to deny the reality, that cigrette smoking was the second greatest killer in the world after road accidents.

In the days when I smoked it was only two or three cigarettes

day, unless I was drinking. Then I chain-smoked. When they banned smoking inflight by the early 1980s I was happy. I could stop smoking for years at a time. Trouble was - easy to quit, easy to start. I never liked smoking in and around food so lighting-up after a meal was no big loss in restaurants. In fact I reserve a special place in hell for the affected swine who light a cigar when other people are eating. The more expensive the cigar, the more it stank. Since my late 40s I’ve smoked very little and not at all in the past decade. Whatever the case, the whole paraphenalia in and around smoking affected us. When I first started smoking I went up-market, Benson & Hedges in their red and gold tin, Balkan Sobranie Black Russian or enticingly foreign like Gauloises and Gitanes. Then settling down to Senior Service or Players and a spell rolling my own in 60s. By the mid 70’s I had pretty much settled down to Benson & Hedges gold or Marlboro Light, which was when I finally graduated to tipped cigarettes. Like publishing, the British and American tobacco barons exercised dual dominion over the world when it came to international brands, so I never really got into American cigarettes, but somewhat familiar with the ‘jetplane’ brands of the 50s and 60s (Rothmans, Stuyvesant, Pall Mall, etc.), until the advent of Marlboro Man that is. One phase I observed with interest and faint contempt was the early 70s fashion branding of cigarettes in huge packs by Cartier, Dunhill, Davidoff and the like, inevitably accompanied by a gold or silver bric lighter from Dupont or other purveyor of cadet luxe. For most of us I suspect, looking back at the golden age of tobacco, now that the stench is gone, is a pleasant exercise in nostalgia. We grew up and matured alongside it all - the packaging, the accoutrements, the advertisements, the sponsorships – all designed to entice. By the time I looked up the man with the laptop and his vape had gone. You know what? E-cigarettes etc. kill only a handfull of people a year, so on the scale of lethality I reckon folks can be left in peace to take a small toke of nicotine in the great outdoors, without the heavy hand of the law being invoked. That said, I do wonder a bit about the involuntary sharing airborne particles lung to lung.

PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH Vaping…How Safe Is It Really?? The use of Vape or E-Cigartettes has sky rocketed in the past decade or so, but is it as safe as we might be led to believe? Recent reports of vape related deaths in the US forces us to re-examine the issue. What is “Vaping”? • Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes - are also called vapes, e-hookahs, vape pens and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). • Using an e-cigarette product is commonly called vaping. • E-cigarettes work by heating a liquid to produce an aerosol that users inhale into their lungs. • The liquid can contain: nicotine, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinoid (CBD) oils, (not in Indonesia) and other substances and additives. 3 Vaping Facts You Need to Know 1: Vaping Can Help You Quit Regular Smoking If you have thought about trying to kick a smoking habit, you’re not alone. Nearly seven out of 10 smokers say they want to stop. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health - smoking harms nearly every organ in your body, including your heart. Nearly one-third of deaths from heart disease are the result of smoking and secondhand smoke. You might be tempted to turn to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) as a way to ease the transition from traditional cigarettes to not smoking at all. But is smoking e-cigarettes better for you than using tobacco products? Can e-cigarettes help you to stop smoking once and for all? E-cigarettes heat nicotine (extracted from tobacco), flavorings and other chemicals to create a water vapor that you inhale. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic. While we don’t know exactly what chemicals are in e-cigarettes.

2: Vaping Is Still Bad for Your Health Nicotine is the primary agent in both regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and it is highly addictive. It causes you to crave a smoke and suffer withdrawal symptoms if you ignore the craving. Nicotine is also a toxic substance. It raises your blood pressure and spikes your adrenaline, which increases your heart rate and the likelihood of having a heart attack. 3: Electronic cigarettes are just as addictive as traditional ones. Both e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes contain nicotine, which research suggests may be as addictive as heroin and cocaine. Does Vaping Cause Serious Injury or Death? What we know • There are 530 cases of lung injury reported in the U.S.A. Seven deaths have been confirmed. • CDC has received complete sex and age data on 373 of 530 cases. - Nearly three fourths (72%) of cases are male - Two thirds (67%) of cases are 18 to 34 years old - 16% of cases are under 18 years & 17% are 35 years or older • All reported cases have a history of e-cigarette product use or vaping. • Based on initial data from certain states we know: Most patients have reported a history of using e-cigarette products containing THC. Many patients have reported using THC and nicotine. Some have reported the use of cigarette products containing only nicotine. What CDC recommends • CDC has released interim recommendations for healthcare providers, health departments, and the public. • Until we know more, if you are concerned about these specific health risks, CDC recommends that you consider refraining from using e-cigarette or vaping products. • If you are an adult who used e-cigarettes containing nicotine to quit cigarette smoking, do not return to smoking cigarettes.

• • - - - -

If you have recently used an e-cigarette or vaping product and you have symptoms like those reported in this outbreak see a healthcare provider. Regardless of the ongoing investigation: Anyone who uses an e-cigarette or vaping product should not buy these products (e.g., e-cigarette or vaping products with THC or CBD oils) off the street, and should not modify or add any substances to these products that are not intended by the manufacturer. Youth and young adults should not use e-cigarette products. Women who are pregnant should not use e-cigarette products. Adults who do not currently use tobacco products should not start using e-cigarette products.

Knowing what we know now, taking up the vaping habit is definitely worth a second thought. Certainly many countries are taking the issue very seriously, including India, which has totally banned the practice. To date, over 20 countries, mostly in South America, the Middle East and South-East Asia, have banned the sale of e-cigarette products. Some countries have also banned possession of these products. Thailand has the strictest laws, while countries such as Australia, Canada and Norway have introduced many restrictions. Donald Trump has also announced that he will soon pass law banning the vape products. Will it be banned in Indonesia…we’ll have to wait and see. BOOMER CORNER

Retire in Bali-Part Two-Practicalities

On Bali, retires are able to live on approximately one-third of what they would need to live at a lower standard of living back in their home countries. With pension plans diminishing in real purchasing value and life expectations lengthening, boomers are doing the numbers and arriving at the conclusion that moving abroad is wiser than aging in place. Because of the country’s mammoth trade deficit, the steadily depreciating Indonesian currency – the rupiah – makes Bali an even safer bet. If you rent out your property in the West, the rental income will assuredly far exceed your rent in Bali. The difference can be used to supplement your princely monthly pension. There will even be enough left over for luxury dining once in a while, a vibrant cultural performance or an around the island driving tour. If you’re still consumed by wanderlust, there are literally thousands of islands to explore. Using Bali as a base, you can embark on a weeks-long trip into the far southeastern islands or to the wilds of Torajaland in southcentral Sulawesi. To ease settlement into your new home, the Indonesian government offers a generous ITAS Retirement Visa for Westerners aged 55 and older who have proof of health and life insurance and proof of pension—a minimum of roughly $1,520 per month fixed income, or at least a lump sum of $18,270 to provide living expenses while in Bali; proof of a rental agreement with the cost set at over $380 a month; a letter stating you agree to employ one Indonesian while you live here—an assistant, a household worker, etc.; a C.V; and a statement agreeing that you won’t work while in Bali. The one year retirement visa costs $740/year if you do it by yourself with a sponsor. You must employ Indonesian household staff and you’re not allowed to earn money, own or run a business. These rules and regulations can change so be sure to check for updates and additions. Condos in southern Bali within sight of the sea cost $600$800/month. If paid by the year, expect $6000-$12,000, depending on location. Recently, changes to the laws have opened up more lenient means by which foreigners may finance or lease property, but this is an area where you must tread extremely cautiously. No matter whether you live in the city or the country, you’ll be expected to make a contribution

of $10-$15/month to your local banjar (village council). Satellite services that offer the whole nine yards - BBC, CNN, Fox, HBO, TLC, Cinemax, National Geographic, unlimited music, international radio stations, etc. costs around $50/ month. Deep in the countryside, use a radio antenna that’s beamed line-of-sight on a lowland reception tower. Though at times a bit choppy, you’ll still be able to Skype your family back home. If you have a telephone landline, you’ll be able to subscribe to a broadband internet service called Speedy provided by Telkom, the national telecommunications company, very good value with faster baud speeds than the Wi-Fi service available only in rural areas. Your monthly costs for eating in or out should not exceed $400-$500/month. Pensioners from overseas who would be hard-pressed to pay their weekly grocery bill can afford to eat out frequently in Bali either in smart restaurants where a huge steak or plate of jumbo shrimp with a glass of wine will set them back $20 or in simple, incredulously cheap local food stalls (warung) where full meals cost as little as US$3. Because of the quality and authenticity of the food served, it’s not that uncommon to see a US$75,000 BMWs or Mercedes parked in front of these simple bamboo tin-roofed eateries. If you’re doing your own cooking at home, your housekeeper gets up at 6 am every day to shop for fresh produce and ingredients at the local market. She will also help you cut up ingredients, prepare Indonesian-style meals herself from scratch, serve drinks to guests and helps clean up after lunch or dinner. Although all the most expensive and esoteric cheeses and condiments are available for purchase, you can reduce food costs by half if you buy only local and not imported products. Staples like chicken US$2-2.50/kg, rice US70 cents to $140/ kg (depending on grade), excellent Robusta coffee US$4.50/ kg. Two kilos of exotic fruit will cost you the same as one kilo of the same fruit back home. Big bottles of Indonesia-made Bintang and Anker beer cost $3, though top Australian wine labels can be expensive at $20-$30/liter. If you fall off the wagon, at least one AA meeting takes place every day of the week somewhere on the island.

Home help who clean, cook, wash, iron, do massages and even pay your bills are readily available for US$200-250/ month (Gaji UMR) in tourist areas and US$170-$200/month in rural areas. If you can afford it, hire two servants – one Balinese and one Javanese. Because they belong to different religions, they follow different customs and holidays. When your Balinese housemaid has to take off work to attend family ceremonies or fulfill incessant religious obligations, your Javanese housemaid can cover for her – and vice versa. Allow $150-$200/monthly for utilities. You’ll get no more heating bills, but air conditioning could run your power usage up. If you live at higher altitudes, you won’t need airconditioning. In Bali’s equatorial climate, it’s never cold enough to wear anything more than a short or long-sleeved t-shirt, light yoga pants and socks in the evenings. Power outages, occurring 2-3 times a month for varying lengths of time from 30 seconds to three hours, are unannounced and may happen at any time during the day (though seldom at night). Tailors in all the towns and tourist centers are adept at skillfully recreating an already well-fitting garment in a different color or fashion. Laundry services which home deliver freshly laundered, ironed and folded clothes are just around the corner or down the street. Or a friendly nearby Balinese family may charge you only 15-20 US cents per piece. With prices like this, it’s easy to understand why Bali’s low cost of living has proven to be an irresistible magnet for retirees.

TRANQUIL NEW RESTO - ON HANOMAN?

Just click on this link: www.quickbeds. the week get there early to claim a table, order one of their com/?grassrootscode=1602. They’ll get a price guarantee, chef’s dinner specials or grab a cocktail. Don’t be late or 24/7 customer support from an Aussie phone support centre, you’ll be standing in the street with the rest of the newbies! and no booking or credit card fees. About midway up Jl Monkey Forest on the right hand side going north. W: laughingbuddhabarbali.com. NATURAL TASTES OF UBUD Ubud Writers Festival is almost here, with the main program from October 23 to 26 and other activities and workshops both before and after the main event. If you’ve decided not to immerse yourself this year, at least take a leisurely walk to learn something new and valuable about Balinese culture. From the festival’s cultural workshops, my pick this year is the Herb Walk (only $35/ 350,000rp).

As I weave my scooter amid the bustle of today’s Jalan Hanoman, or take advantage of the many of shops, restaurants and spas along the way, it’s hard to remember my early visits to Ubud when this was just a dirt path beside the rice fields, punctuated by the occasional small temple.

While most us have forgotten our grandparents’ natural remedies, and buy herbs and vegetables from the supermarket, for a Balinese family the home garden and nearby forests are abundant sources of food, herbs and natural medicines. You can also find Cooltones at top Thai restaurant Siam Sally (next to Jl Hanoman’s Yoga Barn entrance), where they are often joined by holidaying musicians from other countries such as Owen Jones, leader singer of Australian band Rapid Fire.

So when I hear that there is a new café in a peaceful spot with rice fields all around, on Jalan Hanoman, I think that someone’s kidding me.

SEEKING THREE FOR CHANGE For real change, you need time, tranquility and the support of others who’ve taken the path before. Changes in both body and mind will help you journey further towards your own truth.

Yet here we are. A short hop south of Coco Mart, just after the Jl Monkey Forest turnoff, I’m checking out PISON and I like what I see. Firstly, they actually have easy to access, off-street parking, round the back. The smart-looking restaurant with its traditional along-along roof is set back a little from the noise and pollution of Hanoman, and we have the choice of air conditioning or a table outside, close to the rice fields. They offer great, piping hot coffee (30-35,000 rp), an all-day breakfast list, and several delicious Indonesian choices on the main menu, along with many western dishes. Most of the meals are 75-85,000 rp. Go Pison! SUPPORT BALI STRAYS - IT’S SIMPLE For many of us who love animals, the only downside to a holiday in gorgeous tropical Bali is the frequent reminder that the island’s stray cats and dogs aren’t treated very kindly. On many a walk or trip in the car, You’ll see a forlornlooking animal that you’d love to stop and help. But how? If you want to contribute in a more permanent way, encourage all your friends in Australia and New Zealand to book their accommodation through Quickbeds, Flight Centre’s online Accom search and booking site. Quickbeds has teamed up with Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) and will donate directly to BAWA, making it easy for you to help save and protect Bali’s animals. Tell your mates to go to Quickbeds and use Grassroots Code: 1602. When they book, $10 will go to BAWA for bookings up to $349, $25 for $350-$699 and $50 for bookings of $700 or more.

Sometimes, working in a very small group brings powerful results. Both at the end of this month (October 24-30) and mid next year (April 9-15), there’s the opportunity for just three special people to take their own next step for change. In a normal day, a Balinese mother might gather herbs, vegetables for cooking and salad leaves for the family meal, prepare a natural tonic to keep her household healthy, and pick some leaves for shampoo or washing a delicate silk sarong.

The Embodying All of You Retreat will be held on the tranquil island of Nusa Penida. Facilitators Michele Cempaka & Daina Kahu have 30 years experience in body and mind transformation work. COOLTONES MAKE UBUD SMILE This month one of my absolute favourite blues bands, The Cooltones, are back at the Laughing Buddha Bar on Jalan Monkey Forest, playing Saturday nights from 7.30pm. These guys gather new fans with every tourist to hit town, with both professional musicians and us regular listeners and dancers impressed with their smooth musicality. Their lead singer, Koko, has the best lyrics down pat, and their lead guitarist - by day a music lecturer at the university - is regularly asked to move to Los Angeles or London, with offers of heaps of work as a session musician. Laughing Buddha has a reputation for bringing the best local talent and international musicians to Ubud, so on any night of

The Frugal Balinist * Nasi jagung

Also known as jagung kuning and beras kuning is a humble, nutritious and low-cost peasant dish that’s prepared by boiling 3 parts rice and one part broken yellow corn kernels in water. Soak the corn kernels first (as you would first soak dried beans). Regular rice costs Rp. 9,000-Rp10,000/kg while beras jagung costs Rp12,500/kg. Every good pembantu (housekeeper) knows how to make nasi jagung. If your pembantu is Javanese, she may want to use corn meal (tepung) to make it.

* Low-cost building materials

Because of wood’s exorbitant costs, builders are using less and less of it in building construction. Alternative building materials are often cheaper and also save considerable money in labor costs. Supporting columns (tiang) are now made of cement, whitewashed with plaster and then stained so that from a distance they appear to be made of wood. Ubiquitous batako (cement blocks) are now being replaced by hebel blocks (bata ringan) made of sand, cement, lime, gypsum and aluminum and glued together with a hard and fast glue. Hebel are twice as big as batako. For ceilings, kasibord (composition board) is used instead of more expensive bamboo matting which is now considered old fashioned by many Balinese. Expensive roof tiles (genteng) are now being replaced by roof shingles (genteng aspal), similar to the type used in Western climes, which cost anywhere from Rp130,000 to Rp240,000, depending on the quality. Door, window and roof framing (usuk dan reng) is now made of lighter baja (steel) which is impervious to termite infestation and one third of the cost of wooden framing.

* What to take back?

When visiting a new village, city or locale in Indonesia, always ask the local inhabitants what their friends and relatives from

other places ask them to bring with them when they visit. If a Balinese visits Java, they are often asked to bring back to Bali peanuts, soybeans, tofu, rice, salak pondok (Rp9,000-Rp10,000/kg), bananas, jeruk (citrus), Malang apples, watermelon; wood and batik. In turn, when a Javanese visits Bali, they’re asked to bring back to Java coconuts, Bali coffee, fruit, vegetables, baju Bali or kaos Bali (Balinese-style clothing), pie susu (small custard apple pies, Rp1000 each) and ikat (tie-dye fabrics or clothing). Also popular with Javanese are beras merah (red rice, Rp18,000-Rp20,000/kg in the villages, but twice that price in tourist areas; sarung pantai (beach sarongs, Rp35,000-Rp75,000); warm Selimut Bali (blankets), Rp75,000-Rp150,000 at Pasar Badung, Karangkunia (toko oleh-oleh Bali) and Sukawati.

* Money Savvy

It doesn’t pay to accuse someone in a store of skimming your credit card. Even if they are responsible, of course they’re not going to admit it. You’ll be the one leaving the store with the bad vibes. Skimming is the work of crime syndicates, rarely the person working behind a checkout counter. Though annoying and inconvenient, your bank most likely will give you a refund. *With an unlocked phone, head to any Grapari Telkomsel outlet where you can get hooked up with their Paket Combo for Rp105,000, giving you a whopping 18 GB of data for internet surfing and streaming, 4300 calls and 400 texts. You can sign up to auto-renew this paket every month, a much better deal than Telkomsel’s widely advertised 1.5 GB for Rp50,000. *Villa and guesthouse owners should be wary of guests who leave their property without paying their room and food bills. If caught, the offenders may respond that the service or food was bad (even if it wasn’t) or that they lost an item or money inside the room which they blame on a staff member.

These are not valid reasons for not paying a hotel bill. If you report their misconduct to the authorities, the police will say that it is a matter of civil law and not criminal law and advise you to take your complaint to the Denpasar court. Local News ‘Stay composed’: Bali gov’t urges tourists and tourism operators not to fret about proposed criminal code changes The Bali Provincial Government has issued a statement emphasizing that the current draft revisions of Indonesia’s criminal code (RKUHP) has not yet been passed and urging both tourists and tourism operators on the island to continue activities as usual. “It is a criminal code bill and not yet accepted nor confirmed as a Book of Criminal Code, therefore is not applicable nor valid,” the statement, signed by Bali Vice Governor Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, or Cok Ace, said. The statement also noted that President Joko Widodo and the House of Representatives (DPR) have agreed to postpone the passage of the bill, after massive protests led by university students in the capital Jakarta and other cities across the country, including Bali, in recent days.

28 Governor of Bali asks Indonesian government to stop planned geothermal project With the strong local opposition to the Bedugul geothermal project on Bali, the local governor has now confirmed his continued opposition and certain assurances by the government in Jakarta that the project will not be pushed forward. In an endless story about the potential development of a geothermal project in Bali, Indonesia, the regional governor Wayan Koster has confirmed that the geothermal power plant project in Bedugul, Tabanan, will be stopped. Koster claimed to have spoken with the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ignasius Jonan. “In addition, related to sensitive issues related to geothermal steam power plants in Bedugul. The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources was willing to continue, I ask him not to continue,” said Koster in his one-year remarks at an event in Bali earlier this month. Koster also talked about his negotiations related to the termination of the construction of the geothermal power plant project with Jonan. One of the reasons for the project’s development has been the opposition to the project by the local community. The concerns mention continue to center around the sacredness of the project site.

percent share of net operating income. Apart from that, on August 21, 2019 the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources and Bali Province signed a cooperation agreement to build a new renewable energy-based power plant. One of them is based on solar energy, and another to use Crude Palm Oil (CPO). “Bali’s current capacity of around 1,300 MW until 2025 is estimated to increase to 2,000 MW. My advice is two, first, the addition is 700 MW, so 350 MW is built in the province of Bali, and another 350 MW is supplied from Java, with Java Bali Connection which is 500 kV. My hope is that the 350 MW built in Bali is entirely from new and renewable energy (EBT), “Jonan said after witnessing the Bali MoU with PLN about electricity strengthening with the use of clean energy.

Koster said Jonan finally decided to stop the project. Koster then gave another regional option as a place to develop renewable energy-based electricity generation projects. “There are other places, there are Karangasem, Jembrana, Buleleng, Klungkung where renewable energy is available.

“Therefore, tourists and tourism operators may stay composed and continue activities as usual,” the Bali provincial government said. The statement comes in response to a slew of international headlines highlighting articles criminalizing sex outside marriage and cohabitation contained in the RKUHP, which is actually just one part of why the bill has been so controversial and heavily criticized. The potential impact of RKUHP, which will also apply to foreigners visiting Indonesia, is of particular concern to Bali, which welcomed more than 6 million foreign tourists last year. That number made up nearly 40 percent of the total number of foreign tourists traveling to Indonesia in 2018. Last week, the bill even elicited a response from neighboring Australia, which updated its official travel advice to its nationals to warn them about the possibility of the bill passing. Tourism operators have expressed concerns that the RKUHP might change travelers’ minds about coming to Bali, and instead choose other destinations in the region. “It will be something that they take note of, and they will be less inclined to stay in Bali and choose other countries for their holidays,” the head of Bali Tourism Board, Ida Bagus Agung Partha Adnyana, said over the weekend. Teuku Taufiqulhadi, a member of the RKUHP working committee in the DPR, claimed just yesterday that foreigners “need not worry” about the articles criminalizing sex outside of marriage contained in RKUHP. According to the lawmaker, the charges can only be made by immediate family members of those involved. [coconuts.co September 25, 2019] 16 Bali hotels estimated to lose IDR1 billion each after UK travel firm Thomas Cook declared bankruptcy: Bali Tourism Board The collapse of UK-based global travel firm Thomas Cook has affected more than a dozen hotels in Bali, with each of them estimated to have lost around IDR1 billion (US$70,375), the Bali Tourism Board (BTB) said yesterday. “There are 16 hotels in Bali [which have been affected], from three-stars to five-stars [hotels],” said chief of BTB, Agung Partha Adyana, as reported by IDNTimes. Adyana added that some of the hotels have gone to the British Consulate in Bali regarding the issue and were told that the Consulate would help make arrangements to see them compensated.

Thomas Cook is the world’s oldest travel firm. The company declared bankruptcy on Monday after failing to secure additional funding to cover its US$2.1 billion debts. According to a Sept. 23 report from Business Insider, Thomas Cook’s bankruptcy left hundreds of thousands of tourists stranded around the world, after the company suspended operations of its own airline. Adyana said that some British tourists in Bali have had to pay for their hotel invoice at the end of their stay as a result, despite having made prior arrangements with Thomas Cook. “We tell them that the travel agent has gone bankrupt, and so we are forced to charge the tourists directly. Some of them are angry, but there are those who are willing to pay,” he explained. In 2018, more than 270,000 tourists visiting Bali came from the United Kingdom, according to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). Adyana noted that Thomas Cook’s bankruptcy is not likely to have a significant impact on UK tourists visiting the island as there are many online booking agents for tours and hotels available. The Bedugul PLTP project, was developed by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) and Bali Energy Ltd with a joint operating contract (KOB) scheme. The development of this project began in 1974 and stagnated in 2005. Quoting CNN Indonesia, since 1997 the community in the Bedugul region has rejected the development of the Bedugul geothermal power plant. Even though exploration permits have been issued in 1996 and drilling permits for six wells have been carried out since 1997. In fact, three geothermal wells have also been exploited, resulting in the project being abandoned and having been stalled since. Meanwhile, the estimated electrical energy that can be generated from the PLTP Bedugul is 414 MW. The Bali Energy joint contract will be completed in 2040 according to the 2004 contract amendment point, in which the government gets a 34

Commentary: This continues the endless story about this project, which is not quite understandable for outsiders. With the economic growth of Bali, mostly through tourism, the energy demand has increased and makes the power supply by cable from Java a factor of increasing instability for Bali. Burning palm oil essentially also creates challenges, not only in the constant supply of the oil, but also emissions that would surely be an issue for the experience of Bali for tourists and the local population. Geothermal energy provides a great opportunity tapping local resources for power generation, and a clean one. Naturally, the religious implications and approach to stakeholder engagement locally is important, but it is sad to see that no consensus can be found on this project. Indonesia: Over 100 sacred Balinese dances for money banned At 63 years old, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati has dedicated his life to Balinese arts and culture. A prominent member of the Ubud royal family and the Bali deputy governor, popularly called Cok Ace, he actively performs the sacred dances of Calonarang and Topeng Sidakarya in religious ceremonies at temples across Bali. For Cok Ace, dancing is not about getting applause from the audience, let alone money. “I never think about how many people will watch me dancing. I never think whether people will applaud me or not. For me, it’s all about sincerity. A 100 percent offering to God,” he said. Cok Ace, who is also the chairman of the Bali branch of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association, said he felt sad to see sacred dances being performed only for tourists. The dances are also often performed at tourism festivals, including to break Indonesian-held world records. “Sacred dances should not be performed for commercial purposes. It’s a deviation,” he said. Cok Ace is not the only one who has an uneasy feeling about the phenomenon. Made Bandem, a Balinese dancer and cultural observer, said he feels the same way. Made, who also acts as the chairman of the Balinese Cultural Board (Listibiya), said, “Protection of the sacred dances is badly needed. These dances are the source of all Balinese dances.” As a response, Bali’s government, along with several concerned institutions, on Tuesday banned 127 sacred dances from being performed in any form for commercial purposes. The institutions are the Bali branch of the Indonesian Hindu Religious Council, the Bali Customary Village Council, Listibiya, the Bali Cultural Agency and the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI) Denpasar. Their joint statement said: “We prohibit all parties from demonstrating/ showing/staging/performing all kinds of sacred Balinese dances beyond the sacred purposes of Hindu ceremonies.” It also stated that there were a number of sacred dances often performed for nonreligious purposes, such as Rejang, Sanghyang, Baris Gede and Wayang Lemah. “The phenomenon is worrying and it is a concern for artists, cultural observers, indigenous leaders, religious leaders, stakeholders and all Balinese.” The statement listed 127 sacred dances, based on research done by ISI Denpasar, Listibiya and the Bali Cultural Agency. It said

that the list could expand. Made said that Listibiya classified three kinds of Balinese dances in 1997, namely Wali and Bebali as sacred dances and Bali Balihan as an entertainment dance. “Dances categorized as Balih Balihan may be performed for entertainment and tourism purposes,” he said. ISI Denpasar rector I Gede Arya Sugiartha also said that sacred dances performed for commercial purposes made him feel dismayed. “It is important to protect sacred dances from commercialization. “They are sources of values that show the disparity of human and god. We want to keep the values alive,” he said. Bali Gov. Wayan Koster, who acted as a witness of the joint decision, warmly welcomed the ban. Wayan said that commercialization of sacred dances could damage the culture inherited from the ancestors. “This protection is needed to strengthen our local culture,” he emphasized. Koster added that since the prohibition is the form of an agreement, not a regulation, no sanctions would be applied. “Living orderly doesn’t mean applying sanctions; [we only need] a mutual understanding, since our concern is to protect Balinese sacred dances.” Cok Ace said that the ban would not stop Balinese dancers from improving their skill and creativity. He said that a Balinese dancer could perform both sacred and non-sacred dances accordingly. “There are rituals and prohibitions that should be obeyed when someone performs a sacred dance. That’s what makes it different from other dances,” he said. [the-japan-news.com September 22, 2019]

Bali to experience a ‘zero shadow day’ on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 The Meteorological, Climate and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has announced that for those living in Bali the companionship of their shadow will be briefly suspended at 12:04 pm local time on Wednesday, October 16, 2019. As reported by Beritabali.com, Bali, together with a number of other locations in Indonesia, will experience a fleeting moment of “no shadows” when the sun is positioned exactly over the equator. Explaining this phenomenon, BMKG issued a statement saying explaining that “Zero Shadow Day” will occur in Bali on October 16th when exactly at 12:04 pm Bali-time the sun will be directly over Bali’s latitude with the sun’s ray striking the earth at a perpendicular angle. Don’t worry, you’ll still have a shadow, but you’ll have to jump up in the air to see your constant companion of self-created shade that will be directly under your feet at that particular moment in time. But, to the casual observer, you’ll appear to have no shadow. Moreover, barring any cloud cover at the time of the phenomenon’s occurrence, the sun may feel slightly

warmer than normal. Zero Shadow Days will also take place in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara Barat, and Maluku. [www.balidiscovery.com September 29, 2019]
