“IN Christ, we have become God’s adopted children, brothers and sisters in Christ.” “This is who we are. This is our identity. We saw a beautiful expression of this when Filipinos rallied around our brothers and sisters affected by the typhoon,” dagdag na mensahe ng pagasa at pag-ibig sa mga libong biktima ng bagyong Yolanda na nawalan ng mga bahay, kabuhayan at mahal sa buhay.

OPINION

January 19 - 25, 2015

‘Learn how to love and be loved’ BELOW is the full transcript – in English, as translated from Spanish by Msgr Mark Gerard Miles – of Pope Francis' impromptu speech, as delivered during the encounter with the youth at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila on Sunday, January 18.  Dear Young Friends, When I speak spontaneously I do it in Spanish, because I don’t know the English language. May I do it? Thank you very much. This Fr Mark, a good translator.  First of all, a sad piece of news. Yesterday, as Mass was about to start, a piece of scaffolding fell and, upon falling, hit a young woman who was working in the area and she died. Her name is Kristel. She worked for the organization preparing for that Mass. She was 27 years old, young like yourselves. She worked for Catholic Relief Services as a volunteer. I would like all of you who are young like her to pray for a moment in silence with me and then we will pray to Our Mother in Heaven. Let us pray. Leads prayer of Hail Mary… Let us also pray for her parents. She was an only child. Her mother is coming from Hong Kong and her father is here in Manila. Leads prayer of Our Father… It is a joy for me to be with you this morning. I greet each of you from the heart, and I thank all those who made this meeting possible. During my visit to the Philippines, I wanted in a particular way to meet with young people, to listen to you and to talk with you. I want to express the love and the hopes of the Church for you. And I want to encourage you, as Christian citizens of this country, to offer yourselves passionately and honestly to the great work of renewing your society and helping to build a better world. In a special way, I thank the young people who have offered words of welcome to me. To Jun and Leandro Santos II and to Rikki, thank you very much. There’s only a very small representation of girls among you. Too little. Women have much to tell us in today’s society. Sometimes we are too “machistas” and we don’t allow enough space to women. But women can see things from a different angle to us, with a different eye. Women are able to pose questions we men are unable to understand. Look out for this fact: she is the only one who has put a question for which there is no answer. She couldn’t put it into words but expressed it with tears. So when the next pope comes to Manila, please let there be more girls. I thank you Jun for talking about your experience so bravely. As I said, the heart of your question has no reply. Only when we too can cry about the things you said can we come close to answering that question. Why do children suffer so much? Why do children suffer? When the heart is able to ask itself and weep, then we can understand something. There is a worldly compassion which is useless. You expressed something like this. It’s a compassion that makes us put our hands in our pockets and give something to the poor. But if Christ had had that kind of compassion he would have greeted a couple of people, given them something, and walked on. But it was only when he was able to cry that he understood something of our lives. Dear young boys and girls, today’s world doesn’t know how to cry. The emarginated people, those left to one side, are crying. Those who are discarded are crying. But we don’t understand much about these people in need. Certain realities of life we only see through eyes cleansed by our tears. I invite each one here to ask yourself: have I learned how to weep? Have I learned how to weep for the emarginated or for a street child who has a drug problem or for an abused child? Unfortunately there are those who cry because they want something else. This is the first thing I want to say: let us learn how to weep as she has shown us today and let us not forget this lesson. The great question of why

Mercy and Compassion THE feeling of those who saw Pope Francis in person is beyond description. People may use words like happiness, joy, hope, excitement and other words that may describe the moment. Yet what people feel is deeper and more profound than these. Anyone who saw him felt something both very personal and communal. His presence quenches people’s thirst and longing for hope. He is with an undefined energy that motivates people to renew their faith and the commitment to goodness and truth. He showed his solidarity with the Yolanda victims by communing with them even for a short while. He expressed that no words could describe how he felt for the suffering of those patiently waited for him in Tacloban in spite of the storm. He struck deep in their hearts when he invited them to look deeply into the reason why they were able to hold on: “Let us respect a moment of silence together and look to Christ on the cross. He understands us because he endured everything. Let us look to our Mother and, like a little child, let us hold onto her mantle and with a true heart say – “Mother”. In silence, tell your Mother what you feel in your heart. Let us know that we have a Mother, Mary, and a great Brother, Jesus. We are not alone. We also have many brothers who in this moment of catastrophe came to help. And we too, because of this, we feel more like brothers and sisters because we helped each other.” Before the highest public officials of the Philippines, Pope Francis stressed the commitment of the Filipino Church to the basic social teaching on the respect for the inviolable dignity of each human person, respect for the rights of conscience and religious freedom, and respect for the inalienable right to life, beginning with that of the unborn and extending to that of the elderly and infirm. True to his calling as pastor of the universal

Church, Pope Francis did not play blind to the scandals that plagues the Philippine society. In firm but gentle tone, he called on government and church officials to shun all forms of corruption and to address gross inequality and social exclusion—plagues that robs the poor of the essentials of dignified existence. “The great biblical tradition enjoins on all peoples the duty to hear the voice of the poor. It bids us break the bonds of injustice and oppression which give rise to glaring, and indeed scandalous, social inequalities. Reforming the social structures which perpetuate poverty and the exclusion of the poor first requires a conversion of mind and heart. The Bishops of the Philippines have asked that this year be set aside as the ‘Year of the Poor.’” “I hope that this prophetic summons will challenge everyone, at all levels of society, to reject every form of corruption which diverts resources from the poor, and to make concerted efforts to ensure the inclusion of every man and woman and child in the life of the community.” Indeed, it is the gravest scandal that anywhere that people are excluded and kept under subhuman existence while a small portion of society enjoys all the material goods and opportunities of good life! This is the harsh reality of the existing economic, social and political structures of Philippine society. In the meeting with families, Pope Francis recognizes the true Filipino treasure—the family. He called on the faithful to protect their families, to see in them the country’s greatest treasure and to nourish them always by prayer and the grace of the sacraments. He warned them of the threats by the “growing efforts on the part of some to redefine the very institution of marriage, by relativism, by the culture of the ephemeral, by a lack of openness to life.” He underscored that the world needs good and strong families to overcome these threats.

Lalaking nagpa-‘sex change’

In the first place, hindi dapat maging laman ng diskusyon ang relihiyon.

Different voices

THIS is perhaps the only long holiday weekend when people are not leaving Manila for a vacation. Instead most, who are Catholics of course, have been busy preparing for the visit of Pope Francis. While Pope Francis is not the first Pope to visit the country – he is the third – his trip here assumes a profound significance because of the timing and his own declarations and position on issues. Pope Francis assumed the highest position in the Roman Catholic Church at a time when both the world and the church are in a crisis. The world is in the midst of a debilitating crisis, which last imploded in 2007-2008. While the apologists of the neoliberal, capitalist system blame a few “greedy” CEOs of large banks and financial investment houses, governments even bailed out these big banks and financial investment houses by using taxpayers’ money to return their losses. These apologists, in sync with governments and multilateral agencies such as the World Trade Organization and IMF-WB, have been clinging to every sign of recovery and have been declaring the end of the crisis even as there really has been no sign of long-term recovery because the crisis is inherent in the system itself. Pope Francis, on the other hand, blames the greed of capitalism – the idolatry of wealth – for the world’s woes. He declared inequality, which has been at its worst level in history, as the root of social evil. And he called on the church to side with the poor. The Philippines is not exempted from this crisis, contrary to what the Aquino government wants the people to believe. Poverty and unemployment is at its worst levels, with slight fluctuations when measured quarterly. Prices of basic commodities, services, and utilities are high and constantly increasing. And despite

claims of growth, the Aquino government could not even raise wages. The Philippines did not experience the roller coaster ride of capitalist countries only because it has constantly been down. A glaring evidence of this crisis is the prevalence of impunity in human rights violations. Human rights violations are but a manifestation of deep inequality, social injustice, and the desperate acts of the rich and powerful to protect their property from the multitude that are poor and without property. This is why the Aquino government is trying everything to shield Pope Francis from the realities of the country. It has established a tight cordon sanitaire around the Pope, on the pretext of securing him. It has handpicked those who would meet with him, including the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. Church officials, on the other hand, have gathered the faithful to meet with Pope Francis. It has organized gatherings of families and the youth. It has arranged masses at the University of Sto. Tomas and Luneta. All of these are meant for spiritual renewal and an affirmation of fidelity to the Catholic Church. Progressive groups would try to bring to the Pope’s attention the realities of systemic greed and government neglect for the poor majority, worsening social inequities and poverty, absence of justice and prevalence of impunity in human rights violations, and the call for release of political prisoners. Different voices would be reaching out to Pope Francis when he arrives in the country. Different groups would portray different pictures of the Philippine situation. Whose voice would Pope Francis listen to? Well, one thing is certain, the one voice that should stand out is the voice of the truth.|

PAHAYAGANG BALIKAS 5

Avoid backlash vs. Muslims I WAS glued to TV's CNN over the past few days, a far cry from my usual. I have to admit this: I sparingly watch TV these days. Why? It's just to be free from the negativities of the day. No, it's not about TV per se. It's because of the content of broadcasts, reflecting life's foibles and woes -which is what journalism is really all about. Indeed, there are facts that are happening all around us but which I refuse to agonize over. I prefer to choose what I want to relish: the pleasant ( and there are so many out there I tell you ). I refuse be at the mercy of these sad and woeful events that are plentiful. But not over the last few days. I followed closely CNN's running coverage of the developing episode in Paris, France that started with the massacre by alleged Al Qaeda terrorists of the editor, reporters and columnists of a news weekly magazine "CHARLIE HEBDO", which is known for its satire, including against Islam's Prophet Muhammad. The terrorists, after barging into the editorial offices and massacred 12 news-workers, escaped to the suburbs but they were cornered and eventually, after 3 days of a stand-off were all killed, except for one woman suspect who is still subject of a massive manhunt. What really strikes me is the fact that out there, they get the bastards. Terrorists are eventually cornered and get to pay for their crimes. Whatever the crime or act committed, the criminals MUST be made to pay for their crimes. In some cases, the recompense is swift and quick just like this Paris incident. Other cases may take some time. But nonetheless, the crime is solved. I hate to make a comparison but I have no choice. We can't escape this reality that here, in our own small corner of the world, this does NOT happen. Here, our criminals are not made to pay. Worse, they merrily prepare for their next crimes. I get angry just thinking about this. When improvised bombs are exploded or when someone is "salvaged", the authorities usually come out swinging with bold angry , challenging words, only to eventually just whimper. This is not to totally blame our law enforcers for this. For one, we are still "primitive" in our crime solving methods and equipment. Two, our own citizens refuse to help. And we can't blame them too because they cannot be protected from any backlash. Three, our feeling of revulsion has been lost, if not numbed, due to the combination of the three above and the recurrence of violent incidents that have become commonplace. Well, maybe there is no basis for comparison between a crime committed in Paris and one committed here. It's like comparing apples with "singkamas". But seeing what happened in far-away France, we are compelled to face the reality that we here are a long, long way off. Am I sad? Nah, not sad but a-n-g-r-y! As in!  BACKLASH --- The more worrisome, if you ask me, is the serious backlash the Paris incident may have on Islam as a religion and Muslims as a people. There is no doubt that the attack on CHARLIE HEBDO was provoked by the blasphemous portrayal of Prophet Muhammad by the satirical news magazine. The suspects were quoted as shouting that this was to avenge Prophet Muhammad. This is problematic obviously because those who will condemn the massacre will have the tendency to equate the terrorism to Islam and attribute this to Muslims as a whole. Of course, we know Islam and mainstream Muslims do not countenance this. But there are initial signs that the unwanted backlash is starting to happen. This must be addressed immediately: “Muslims must join in , if not dominate the chorus of condemnation.” And it will not help any if some Muslims will also justify the attack. So let's all be sensitive to this and all help.  "JORGE BERGOLIO" --- I watched the Sunday episode of ABS CBN that featured the life of once priest, then bishop and cardinal Jorge Bergolio and now, Pope Francis. His life is truly astounding! His love for the poor will explain His papacy. How he grappled with “liberation theology” that saw how his other Jesuit priests in Argentina worked for --and with -- the poor victims of martial law was another defining moment of his life. To some, he did not do enough to counter the Martial Law. But unknown to many, he maintained a respectable relationship with the repressive regime to protect his priests. He allowed the use of his identity to smuggle a priest out of the country to escape the regime. His ways are unconventional. He is compassionate, he listens, he consults, but beware: if he decides on something, he insists and sticks to it; he is frugal and strict. See how he proceeds in reforming the reclusive, allegedly problematic Curia in the Vatican. His coming visit will be full of visuals and messages that will reflect his persona and the present-day Catholic Church under His papacy.  SMARTMATIC, AGAIN? --- Wow, they have not cleared up what happened with the "bolilyaso" of Smartmatic in the last elections and now, another magic made by Comelec to hire it again for 2016 WITHOUT BIDDING! What I cannot understand is that even a former Comelec insider is casting grave doubts about its reliability and credibility. And now this! A warning: If they plan on pulling something large-scale and unbelievable on the Filipino people in the 2016 elections, they are courting an upheaval! Mark my word!|  [Atty. Thousands of Sto. Nino devotees join Batangas City’s Fluvial Parade HE people of Batangas City continue to demonstrate their strong devotion to Sto. Nino, the city’s Patron Saint, as thousands joined the fluvial precession in Calumpang River yesterday, January 7 to mark the city fiesta celebration in His honor on January 16.

T

Mayor Eduardo Dimacuha, former Mayor Vilma Dimacuha, Archbishop Ramon Arguelles, Parish Priest Fr. Dado Castillo and city officials led the fluvial procession. From the river, the procession crossed the newly installed Pontoon Bridge toward P. Panganiban St. where Alangilan Elementary School students performed the Subli dance. The land

procession passed through the main streets of the poblacion and culminated at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. A display of fireworks greeted the procession as it arrived at the Basilica and ushered back the Sto. Nino. Archbishop Ramon Arguelles and other priests concelebrated the Holy Mass. Prior to the procession, the Sto. Nino was fetched at the Basilica at 1:00 PM by Mayor Dimacuha and other officials. From here, the motorcade brought the Sto. Nino to the Batangas City Convention Center where “Alay sa Sto. Nino” cultural presentations were performed by 13 schools in Batangas City. After this event, the motorcade resumed and proceeded to Barangay Cuta Duluhan where the fluvial procession started.|

FAITH AND TRADITION. Thousands of devotees of Sto. Niño joined the annual Fluvial Procession every 7th of january, that traversed the historic Calumpang River where the statue of the patron was found atop a floating log some hundred years ago.

“ I don’t know what to say to you, you lost everything, you lost members of your families, but the Lord knows what to say to you”, ani Pope Francis kung saan dahilan sa tagos sa pusong

“All I can do is keep silent, and I walk with you all with my silent heart. Many of you have asked the Lord, “Why, Lord?” And to each of you, to your heart, Christ responds from his heart upon the cross”, dagdag ni Pope Francis sa kaniyang mensahe sa mga survivors. “I have no more words to tell you. Let us look to Christ. He is the Lord. He understands us because he underwent all the trials that we, that you, have experienced. And beside the cross was his mother; we are like this little child just there”, pagpapatuloy pa ni Pope Francis.

“We too need to protect, guide and encourage our young people, helping them to build a society worthy of their great spiritual and cultural heritage,” aniya.

Mahigpit na niyakap ng Santo Papa ang dalawang bata at sa kanyang sagot-tanong, “Did I learn to cry when I see a child who is hungry, a child using drugs in the street, a child without a home, a child abandoned, a child abused, a child used by a society as a slave?”

Sa pagtatapos ng kaniyang homiliya sa Liturgy of the Word, sinabi pa ng Santo Papa, “May he enable all the beloved people of this country to work together, protecting one another, beginning with your families and communities, in building a world of justice, integrity and peace.”

Pope calls on Filipinos to build a better world for children

N his concluding Mass, Pope Francis urged millions of Filipino who flocked to the Quirino Grandstand to be inspired by the Sto. Niño.

POPE FRANCIS waves to the crowd as his mobile leaves Malacanang palace, Jan. 16.| FRED DABU | BULATLAT “The Sto. Niño continues to proclaim to us that the light of God’s grace has shone upon a world dwelling in darkness, bringing the Good News of our freedom from slavery, and guiding us in the paths of peace, right and justice,” Pope Francis said. “The Santo Niño also reminds us of our call to spread the reign of Christ throughout the world.” Noting that the Philippines is the foremost Catholic country in Asia, the pontiff called on Filipinos to be outstanding missionaries of the faith. He told millions of Catholics, “He [God] chose us, each of us to be witnesses of his truth and his justice in this world.” The Pope’s message is both personal and political. Pope Francis said God “created the world as a beautiful garden and asked us to care for it.” “But through sin, man has disfigured that natural beauty; through sin, man has also destroyed the unity and beauty of our human family, creating social structures which perpetuate poverty, ignorance and corruption.” In his speech at the Malacanang palace, Jan. 16, he told Philippine authorities “to reject every form of corruption which diverts resources from the poor.” The Pope said that when the Child Christ came into the world, his very life was threatened by a corrupt king. “He resisted the dishonesty and corruption which are the legacy of sin, and he triumphed over them by the power of his cross,” he said. He said Sto. Nino “reminds us of the importance of protecting our families,

programs contrary to all that we hold true and sacred, all that is most beautiful and noble in our culture.” God’s children Touched by his visit to Tacloban and Palo, Leyte, the most affected areas by supertyphoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan), the Pope said “In Christ, we have become God’s adopted children, brothers and sisters in Christ.” “This is who we are. This is our identity. We saw a beautiful expression of this when Filipinos rallied around our brothers and sisters affected by the typhoon,” he said. The Pope celebrated the Holy Mass at the Tacloban airport and had lunch with some of the survivors of the typhoon Yolanda. He had to cut short his trip due to typhoon Amang.

The Pope also asked everyone to see each child as a gift to be welcomed, cherished and protected and to care for the young people, not allowing them to be robbed of hope and condemned to life on the streets. Earlier at the University of Santo Tomas, Pope Francis heard the testimonies of former street children and two young men. Clearly, the Pope does not mean mere dole-outs but an act of genuine solidarity. “We too need to protect, guide and encourage our young people, helping them to build a society worthy of their great spiritual and cultural heritage,” he said. Before ending his Homily, the Pope said, “May he enable all the beloved people of this country to work together, protecting one another, beginning with your families and communities, in building a world of justice, integrity and peace.” Heartfelt response In his response, Cardinal Antonio Luis Tagle thanked the Pope for his visit. “Jesus is the center of your pastoral visit.” The Cardinal then mentioned the workers, the farmers, the migrants, the relatives of the missing – those who are poor and those who are suffering that the Pope referred to in his messages. “Every Filipino wants to go with you not to Rome but to the peripheries…We will go with you where the light of Jesus is needed.” he said. “We want to go with you to shanties, prison cells, hospitals, world of politics, finance, arts, sciences,” Tagle said. After Tagle’s speech, the Pope, tearyeyed, embraced Tagle. The crowd, drenched in rain, shouted, “Papa Francesco, Mahal ng Pilipino!”| RONALYN V. OLEA Bulatlat.com

LIFE TIMES ‘Learn how to love and be loved’ <<<FAITH....from P/4 January 19 - 25, 2015

PAHAYAGANG BALIKAS 11

.............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. so many children suffer, she did this in tears. The response that we can make today is: let us really learn how to weep. In the Gospel, Jesus cried for his dead friend, he cried in his heart for the family who lost its child, for the poor widow who had to bury her son. He was moved to tears and compassion when he saw the crowds without a pastor. If you don’t learn how to cry, you cannot be a good Christian. This is a challenge. When they posed this question to us, why children suffer, why this or that tragedy occurs in life – our response must be either silence or a word that is born of our tears. Be courageous, don’t be afraid to cry. Then came Leandro Santos II and his question. He also posed a good question: the world of information. Today, with so many means of communication we are overloaded with information. Is that bad? No. It is good and can help. But there is a real danger of living in a way that we accumulate information. We have so much information but maybe we don’t know what to do with that information. So we run the risk of becoming museums of young people who have everything but not knowing what to do with it. We don’t need young museums but we do need holy young people. You may ask me: Father, how do we become saints? This is another challenge. It is the challenge of love. What is the most important subject you have to lean at university? What is most important subject you have to learn in life? To learn how to love. This is the challenge that life offers you: to learn bow to love. Not just to accumulate information without knowing what to do with it.. But through that love let that information bear fruit. For this the Gospel offers us a serene way forward: using the three languages of the mind, heart and hands – and to use them in harmony. What you think, you must feel and put into effect. Your information comes down to your heart and you put it into practice. Harmoniously. What you think, you feel and you do. Feel what you think and feel what you do. Do what you think and what you feel. The three languages... Can you repeat this? To think. To feel. To do. And all in harmony... Real love is about loving and letting yourself be loved. It’s harder to let yourself be loved than to love. That is why it is so difficult to come to the perfect love of God. We can love Him but we must let ourselves be loved by Him. Real love is being open to the love that comes to you. The love that surprises us. If you only have information you are not surprised. Love surprises because it opens a dialogue of loving and being loved. God is a God of surprise because He loved us first. God awaits us to surprise us. Let us allow ourselves to be surprised by God. Let us not have a computer psychology that makes us think we know it all. All answers on computers - but no surprises. The challenge of love. God reveals himself through surprises. Think of St Matthew. He was a good banker. But he let people down because he imposed taxes against his own people to give to the Romans. He was full of money. Jesus passed by, looked at him and said: “Follow me”. He couldn’t believe it. It you have the

opportunity, see Caravaggio’s picture of him. Jesus calls him and those around say: “Him? He betrayed us! He is no good! He hoards money!” But the surprise of being loved overcomes him. The day when Matthew left home for work, saying goodbye to his wife, he couldn’t imagine he would come home without money and have to prepare a feast for the one who loved him first. God surprised Matthew more than the money he had. Allow yourselves to be surprised by God. Don’t be afraid of surprises. They shake the ground beneath our feet and make us insecure, but they move us forward in the right direction. Real love allows you to spend yourselves, to leave your pockets empty. Think of St Francis who died with empty hands and empty pockets but with a full heart. Remember: no young museums, and wise young people. To be wise use three languages: think well, feel well and do well. And to be wise allow yourselves to be surprised by the love of God. That will guarantee a good life. Rikki came up with a good plan for what we can do in life with all young people’s activities. Thank you, Rikki, for what you and your friends do. I’d like to ask you a question: you and your friends help others but do you allow yourselves to receive? Answer in your heart. In the Gospel we just heard, there was a beautiful phrase, for me the most important of all: Jesus looked at the young man and he loved him. When you see Rikki and his friends you love them because they do good things. Jesus says something very important: you lack one thing. Let us listen to this word in silence: you lack only one thing. What is it that I lack? To all of you who Jesus loves so much, I ask you: do you allow others to give you from their riches to you who have not? The Sadducees, Doctors of the Law, in the time of Jesus, gave much to the people, they taught the people the law, but they never allowed the people to give them something. Jesus had to come to allow himself to feel compassion and to be loved. How many young people among you are like this? You know how to give and yet you have ever learned how to receive. You still lack one thing. Become a beggar. This is what you still lack. Learn how to beg. This isn’t easy to understand. To learn how to beg. To learn how to receive with humility. To learn to be evangelized by the poor, by those we help, the sick, orphans, they have so much to give us. Have I learned how to beg? Or am I selfsufficient? Do I think I need nothing? Do you know you too are poor? Do you know your own poverty and your need to receive? Do you let yourselves be evangelized by those you serve? This is what helps you mature in your commitment to give to others. Learn how to open your hand from your very own poverty. There are some points I have prepared. The first, I already told you: to learn how to love and to learn how to be loved. There is a challenge which is a challenge of u. This is not only because your country more than many others is likely to be seriously affected by climate change. There is the challenge, the concern for the environment. And finally, there is the challenge for the poor, to love the poor, with your bishops. Do you think of the

poor? Do you feel with the poor? Do you do something for the poor? Do you ask the poor to give you the wisdom they have? This is what I wish to tell you all today. Sorry if I haven’t read what I prepared for you but there is a phrase that consoles me: that reality is superior to ideas. The reality that you have is superior to the paper I have in front of me. Thank you very much. Pray for me!The family is also threatened by growing efforts on the part of some to redefine the very institution of marriage, by relativism, by the culture of the ephemeral, by a lack of openness to life. I think of Blessed Paul VI in a moment on the challenge of that growth of populations, he had the strength to defend openness to life. He knew the difficulties that families experience, and that's why in his encyclical, he expressed compassion for particular cases. And he taught professors to be particularly compasisonate with particular cases. But he went further. He went to the peoples beyond. He saw the lack and the problem it could cause families in the future. Paul VI was courageous. He was a good pastor and he warned his sheep of the wolves that were approaching. And from the heavens, he blesses us today. Our world needs good and strong families to overcome these threats! The Philippines needs holy and loving families to protect the beauty and truth of the family in God’s plan and to be a support and example for other families. Every threat to the family is a threat to society itself. The future of humanity, as Saint John Paul II often said, passes through the family. The future passes through the family. So protect your families! Protect your families. See in them your country’s greatest treasure and nourish them always by prayer and the grace of the sacraments. Families will always have their trials, but may you never add to them! Instead, be living examples of love, forgiveness, and care. Be sanctuaries of respect for life, proclaiming the sacredness of every human life from conception to natural death. What a gift this would be to society, if every Christian family lived fully its noble vocation! So rise with Jesus and Mary, and set out on the path the Lord traces for each of you. Finally, the Gospel we have heard reminds us of our Christian duty to be prophetic voices in the midst of our communities. Joseph listened to the angel of the Lord and responded to God’s call to care for Jesus and Mary. In this way, he played his part in God’s plan, and became a blessing not only for the

Holy Family, but a blessing for all of humanity. With Mary, Joseph served as a model for the boy Jesus as he grew in wisdom, age, and grace. When families bring children into the world, train them in faith and sound values, and teach them to contribute to society, they become a blessing in our world. Family can begin a blessing to the world. God’s love becomes present and active by the way of love and by the good works that we do. We extend Christ’s kingdom in this world. And in doing this, we prove faithful to the prophetic mission which we have received in baptism. During this year which your bishops have set aside as the Year of the Poor, I would ask you, as families, to be especially mindful of our call to be missionary disciples of Jesus. This means being ready to go beyond your homes and to care for our brothers and sisters who are most in need. I ask you especially to show concern for those who do not have a family of their own. In particular, those who are elderly and children without parents. Never let them feel isolated, alone and abandoned, but help them to know that God has not forgotten them. I was very moved after the mass today when I visited that shelter, that home for children who have no parents. How many people in the Church so that house is a home or family? This is what it means to take forward prophetically the meaning of a family. You may be poor yourselves in material ways, but you have an abundance of gifts to offer when you offer Christ and the community of his Church. Do not hide your faith. Do not hide Jesus, but carry him into the world and offer the witness of your family life! Dear friends in Christ, know that I pray for you always! I pray for you today, for the family. I pray that the Lord may continue to deepen your love for him, and that this love may manifest itself in your love for one another and for the Church. Don't forget Jesus, Philippines. Don't forget Joseph, Philippines. Jesus slept under the protection of Joseph. Don't forget prayer for the fmaily. Pray often and take the fruits of your prayer into the world, that all may know Jesus Christ and his merciful love. Please sleep also for me. Pray for me. Pray also for me, for I truly need your prayers and will depend on them always! Thank you very much.|
