INTRODUCTION

IT’S GREAT TO BE BACK! Last December, in the midst of a period of unprecedented upheaval and collective anxiety, the virtual National Landscape Awards ceremony was a welcome touch of normality. It allowed our members’ incredible achievements over the previous difficult year to be recognised and brought the BALI family together again, albeit briefly and over the ether. But this year we were able to join together again to celebrate another astonishing year of our members’ expertise, craftsmanship, and professionalism - and it was great to be back! The 45th National Landscape Awards remind us that we need to gather physically for this annual celebration so that we can meet with and feel supported by our colleagues, promote our collective achievements to a demanding market, be inspired by our peers, and energise our businesses for the year ahead. You can only do so much ‘virtually’ and nothing really replaces celebrating together, face to face. 2021 was another difficult operational year for members and 2022 is shaping up to present businesses with yet more challenges. COVID hasn’t gone away, the effects of Brexit – not least in terms of labour shortages - are really biting, skilled labour is difficult to attract and retain, and the re-starting of the global economy following the impact of COVID lockdowns is affecting materials supply. With all that said, the resilience of our members continues to inspire me and gives great hope for the future of the industry. But members aren’t just ‘anyone’, as this year’s Award winners clearly demonstrate. Accredited Contractors, Designers and Suppliers have battled their way through the year to deliver beautiful, inspiring, uplifting spaces in spite of the challenges. They have persevered, kept their heads down, and concentrated on delivering professional excellence in design, construction and maintenance, supported by innovative products and services. This year’s winning schemes celebrate members’ resourcefulness, innovation and craftsmanship, as well as their determination to maintain the highest standards of service delivery. Whether it’s the in-situ construction of a cubist

concrete design for a domestic garden, the on-site manipulation and welding of steel edging to create the pattern for an intricate parterre de broderie, the construction of a self-supporting 1.8m high dry stone retaining wall, or the excellent precision maintained throughout the entire duration of a 3-year construction contract, members will not settle for less than professional excellence. Every one of the UK schemes entered into this year’s Awards was visited personally by one of our wonderful Awards judges and each of the many, very detailed, International entries was reviewed by the Chair of the Judging Panel, John Melmoe, in addition to his own judging responsibilities. All Employer Excellence and Supplier Exceptional Service entries were scrutinised by a panel of industry experts and overseen by John Melmoe. Over three days at the end of August, the Judging Panel met at Landscape House to discuss each of the shortlisted schemes before agreeing their final list of winners. The judging process is a task of monumental proportions and we owe our judges a huge debt of gratitude for their commitment and dedication. Commenting on this year’s Awards, John Melmoe said: “This year’s Awards process has been particularly rewarding for the judges. We have had more first time entrants and been impressed by their level of achievement; we have witnessed the growth and development year on year of regular entrants, indicating that our feedback on their previous entries has been taken on board and worked on; and we have been delighted to see excellence achieved in both the more

traditional, labour-intensive crafts and in newer landscaping techniques. We are sure that members will continue to push the boundaries of landscaping excellence and we are already looking forward with anticipation to judging the 2022 entries.”

“I WOULD LIKE TO PERSONALLY THANK THE JUDGING PANEL AND, ON THEIR BEHALF, OFFER OUR WARMEST CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THIS YEAR’S VERY WORTHY WINNERS.” It would be impossible to stage an awards ceremony on the scale of the National Landscape Awards without the financial support of our headline sponsor Green-tech and our other industry sponsors. We thank them all for their unstinting support and for helping to bring us all back together again in person to celebrate members’ success. Finally, in 2022 our association celebrates its 50th anniversary and the entire Landscape House team is excited at the prospect of delivering a year of events to mark this auspicious milestone in BALI’s history. We hope you will be able to join us. Best wishes, Emily Feeney

XXX GRAND AWARD

GRAND AWARD WINNER GRADUATE GARDENERS PRIVATE GARDEN, CHELTENHAM

Designer/Main Contractor Graduate Gardeners Suppliers Cirencester Civil Engineering, Cotswold Stone Quarries, Falcon Balustrades, Wildflower Turf The client’s brief for the grounds of this large house on a steeply sloping site on Cleve Hill, Cheltenham, was to maximise the view, provide much better parking, enhance the entrance, and create more usable space within the garden. This required the skilful implementation of a design comprising a significant amount of groundworks to re-structure the site, and the use of Italianate styling to create a truly beautiful private landscape for the owners to enjoy. This scheme truly defines the excellence that must be achieved to win the Grand Award. See page 26 for full details.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

By far the most impressive structural element of this design was the traditional dry stone retaining wall. Over 600 tons of material was excavated and over 300 tons of walling stone used, each piece placed by hand to create a wall 1.5m deep at the base (500mm below ground level) and 600mm at the top, with the finished height an average of 1.8m. It is a monument to the skill of the landscaping team. It is, however, only one element of a delightful in-house design that has transformed the space and created the most beautiful setting for the house. Once again, this BALI contractor has raised the bar, showing the heights its peers must reach to be in the running for the Grand Award.

PRINCIPAL AWARD WINNER

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - UNDER £30K VU GARDEN DESIGN & LANDSCAPING PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN SITTINGBOURNE

Designer/Main Contractor Vu Garden Design & Landscaping Suppliers Challenge Fencing, London Stone, Provender Nurseries, Screen With Envy, Timberulove The client had two main requirements for their garden - a large area for outdoor dining and family gatherings and a peaceful, serene space in which to relax and appreciate wildlife. In order to accommodate both requests and fit within a relatively small budget for the size of the garden, the contractor had to be mindful and creative in their choice of materials and layout. The large patio area is paved using light grey porcelain, broken up visually by adding Belgian clay pavers laid in a herringbone pattern. A decorative weathered steel panel hangs in the centre of the rear wall of the house, elegantly contrasted against a white background. Large planting beds on all sides of the dining area soften the space, and the use of fragrant plants like lavender, rosemary and salvia creates a pleasant dining experience. The planting scheme for the lower garden includes species to attract wildlife, including Malus trees with red fruits that are loved by birds. Plank paving laid in an irregular format with gaps filled with chamomile and Irish moss creates a naturalistic effect. A large pergola adds height and mass to the garden, and Siberian larch battens form an attractive rear boundary.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

What was a small, featureless space has been transformed into a charming entertaining and wildlife-friendly garden, meeting the client brief perfectly. The contractor has demonstrated good workmanship across the range of construction disciplines, with excellent paving, cutting in and timber work. The plant selection creates ambience and has established well.

AWARD WINNERS

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - UNDER £30K GARDEN CLUB LONDON WHITTLESEY STREET Client Kate Brittin Designer/Maintenance Contractor Garden Club London Main Contractor Chris Walker Construction Suppliers Allgreen Group, Creepers Nursery, Landscapeplus, W.L. West & Sons This small garden in the heart of Waterloo, London, is an oasis for wildlife and a place of tranquillity for the client. Yorkstone paving taken up prior to the construction of an extension to the property has been re-laid in a stepping stone format with plants selected to creep between the stones and self-seed. Woven oak panels have been used to add detail and also create a habitat for insects. The planting scheme provides scent and colour for the client to enjoy and nectar rich plants, such as Buddleja, Thyme and Sedum, attract insects and create year-round interest.

INSTANT SCENERY PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN WORCESTER Designer/Main Contractor/Maintenance Contractor Instant Scenery Suppliers Bradfords Building Supplies, County Building Supplies, Croome Composting, London Stone, Viridis The clients wanted a low-maintenance family garden with seasonal colour and interest in which to entertain and relax. The smooth curves of the strong ‘circular’ design draw attention away from the garden’s square plot. A new circular lawn, patio and decking area have all been located to take full advantage of the sun and the different levels and angles add interest. Mixed planting in raised beds gives colour, texture, shape and fragrance and the varied palette of quality materials, including the setts and gravel that edge the feature lawn, add further interest. Tall trees draw the eye upwards and provide privacy.

LANGLEA GARDEN DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION TOWNHOUSE ESCAPE Designer/Main Contractor Langlea Garden Design & Construction Suppliers Bladesgrass, Chandlers Building Supplies, Evergreen Exterior Services, Greensquares Products, metals4u This small, low-maintenance, family garden of a newly renovated Victorian house is framed by the bi-fold doors from the open plan kitchen, diner and lounge and takes visual cues from the property’s architecture and interior design. It is surrounded by elegant, bespoke screening, whilst strategically placed olive and Himalayan birch trees lightly buffer unsightly views of overlooking properties. Contrasting paving and galvanised steel detailing denote a cleverly designed paving layout. A galvanised steel raised planter with structural planting provides the backdrop to a delicate ‘floating’ oak bench overlooking an artificial lawn installed for the family pet. A lighting scheme creates nighttime ambience.

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - UNDER £30K BOAST ABOUT THE GARDEN FOCUSED ON THE VIEW Client Mr and Mrs Stanley Baston Architect/Designer/ Main Contractor/Maintenance Contractor Boast About The Garden Suppliers B & M Concrete, Jewson, Katie's Garden Nursery, Paynes Turf, Shrubland Sawmill The retired clients’ brief was to create an inviting, safe and relatively private garden that would encourage them to spend time outside developing their gardening experience, and to relax and enjoy the stunning views across to the River Debden, which flows close to their home in East Suffolk. The contractor used character materials to create the traditional style and feel of the garden, undertaking all brickwork, paving and timber construction in-house to a very high standard. The planting scheme uses a familiar palette that sits well within the rural surroundings and is in keeping with the garden’s intentionally traditional design.

GREEN ACORN LANDSCAPE DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION BILLINGE OUTDOOR LIVING Client Susan Taylor Architect/ Designer/Main Contractor Green Acorn Landscape Design & Construction Suppliers Cheshire Stone, Country Electric Wholesalers (CEW), CVO Fires, Derbyshire Aggregates, Grassland Nurseries The quality of the construction and excellent attention to detail by the contractor has reignited the clients’ passion for spending time outdoors in their garden. The original garden’s uninspiring rectangular space has been transformed by a contemporary design that includes a seating area with fire-pit for relaxing and entertaining, an impressive water feature, and numerous focal points throughout created by structures, planting and contrasts in colour and texture. In the evenings a warm lighting scheme brings the garden to life with a fresh ambience, extending its use and providing a wonderful outlook from the property.

PRINCIPAL AWARD WINNER XXX

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - BETWEEN £30K - £60K DANSCAPE GARDENS CONCRETE & COOKING

Designer David Male Gardens Main Contractor Danscape Gardens Supplier Lawsons The clients’ brief for this narrow London courtyard garden was for an outside cooking area and a space with an open fire for eating and relaxing. Additionally, the design was to be something ‘out of the ordinary’, using concrete work that the client had seen and liked. The David Male design was challenging for the contractor, who used bespoke ‘castin-situ’ concrete to create the walls for the raised beds, a barbeque kitchen area and a log burning open fire. Timber shuttering was constructed on concrete foundations and rebar and mesh used to strengthen the structures before the concrete was carefully mixed and poured in stages. The raw concrete is very effectively complemented by the use of English new sawn Yorkstone and softened by an artificial lawn and planting. The lighting scheme brings the garden to life at night, creating a dramatic and beguiling space.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

The contractor has demonstrated considerable courage and determination in undertaking this project. Working to the designer’s concept plan, the contractor was faced with some complex design elements and logistical challenges, all of which were overcome to great effect. The level of detailing achieved throughout is exemplary and the clients are delighted with the end result.

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - BETWEEN £30K - £60K GARDEN CLUB LONDON HAMBLE STREET Client Smith & Butler Architect Will Gamble Architects Designer/Maintenance Contractor Garden Club London Main Contractor LJB Building Suppliers Brickworks Vande Moortel, Champion Timber, Creepers Nursery, Harrod Horticultural, Landscapeplus The design for the narrow rear garden of this terraced house is influenced by the kitchen extension and refurbishment, which is styled as a contemporary Japanese tea house featuring charred wood cladding and grid-like glass facade inspired by traditional Japanese shoji screens. A large birch tree at the back of the garden helps to maintain privacy and layers of planting at different heights balance proportions throughout the space. A range of reclaimed material was used in this warm and relaxing space, including a stone water trough as a bird bath and oak railway sleepers to create the raised bed.

HG LANDSCAPES CASTELNAU Designer Claire Mee Main Contractor Seymour Projects Maintenance Contractor HG Landscapes Supplier Allgreen Existing mature trees in the garden of this newly-renovated property heavily influenced the design and have given it instant impact. The highest quality materials have been used throughout to create the imposing bespoke oak pergolas and matching edging, fencing, and the terrace adjacent to the house. Burnt timber setts provide yet more interest in a seating area and Bredon gravel pathways link the space. Beautiful colours and textures in the soft planting create a luxurious feel and the garden is brought to life at night with a beautiful lighting scheme.

GREENSCAPE GARDENS THE SECRET SENSORY GARDEN Designer Dru Allan Design Main Contractor Greenscape Gardens Suppliers Adezz, AHS, Designboard, Johnsons of Whixley, Marshalls Created by designer Dru Allan as a family garden with sophisticated space to entertain, the design also cleverly incorporates a host of features for the clients’ two children, one of which is severely disabled, to explore and enjoy. Whilst the sensory aspect of the garden was very important the clients didn't want it to look like a children's playground so elements such as a Corten steel water feature, musical instrument and a trampoline have been cleverly and discreetly incorporated, linked by gently winding pathways and located close to the seating and entertaining area at the top of the garden.

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - BETWEEN £60K - £100K GRADUATE GARDENERS PRIVATE GARDEN, BATTLEDOWN, CHELTENHAM

Designer/Main Contractor Graduate Gardeners Suppliers Beswick Stone, County Building Supplies, Landscapeplus, The Pot Company, Viridus The former sunken garden of this impressive property has been completely reimagined by the contractor with a design that accommodates a new swimming pool and outbuildings converted into changing room facilities and a sauna. New steps lead down into the paved pool area and directly adjacent to them is a partially sunken hot tub, which is surrounded by grey composite decking that links to the oak framework of the garden room/office. New borders have been created around the paved areas and paths, and an extensive terrace has been created for barbecues, play and relaxation. Corten steel water features near the garden room provide a relaxing ambience. An irrigation system has been installed to help maintain the soft planting and a lighting scheme brings the area to life at night, highlighting the existing brick boundary walls, the planted areas, and the steps and hot tub decking.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

This beautiful scheme stands out as an exemplar of how to work within tight tolerances. The high quality workmanship and superb attention to detail is visible in all aspects of the hard landscaping. The soft planting is entirely appropriate for the space and, together with the project’s overall faultless execution, will undoubtedly be appreciated by those relaxing by the pool.

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - BETWEEN £60K - £100K TALBOT FARM LANDSCAPES DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - UNDER 30K PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN STAFFORDSHIRE Designer James Tidy Main Contractor Talbot Farm Landscapes Suppliers JC Balls, Readyhedge, Talbot Turf Supplies, Tidyco, Woodtrend Despite the absence of a formal design, this project for a koi pond and decking areas evolved through the successful collaboration of client and contractor. Access to the sloping site was very tight, with all machinery and materials having to be lifted via hi-ab over the fence. The 4m x 2m x 2m deep koi pond was constructed with reinforced concrete, breeze blocks and fibre glass and an extensive heat and filtration system installed, together with a glass filtration cover. Hardwood decking was constructed on two levels with steps between. A 1.5m Elaeagnus ready hedge and a new lawn complete the scheme.

LANDESIGNS ANCHOR COTTAGE FAMILY GARDEN Architect/Designer Rosemary Coldstream Garden Design Main Contractor Landesigns Suppliers Deepdale Trees, George Davies Turf, London Stone, Rivelin, Urbis Design The design by Rosemary Coldstream MBALI brings the indoors outside, providing enjoyment for the whole family. Central steps lead up to the semicircular lawn, which is bordered by planters and curved and clad walls. Beyond to one side is the children's play area, complete with Wendy house and trampoline. A dining terrace with outdoor kitchen and seating provides the perfect space in which to entertain, relax and unwind whilst looking out and enjoying the beautiful planting scheme and views across the garden.

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - BETWEEN £100K - £250K LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATES MODERN FAMILY GARDEN

Architect Michael Jones Architects Designer Tom Massey Studio Main Contractor Rubix Construction Suppliers Lazenby, Surrey Ironcraft, Water Artisans This very technical design by Tom Massey for a young, design conscious couple, references cubism and gave the contractor a number of logistical and construction challenges. Access to the long, narrow plot of the semidetached property was very limited and the level changes on the site required major construction solutions. Industrial materials such as concrete and steel were chosen to create a dramatic and visually very striking garden. The project included lighting, irrigation and a technical water feature, all requiring a flexible approach by the contractor and the careful management of sub-contractors. The cubist cliff path rises up in stages from the modern extension at the back of the house to reach a seating area. A Corten steel rill water feature runs through the design and bespoke Corten steel grilles provide a stylish colour and texture contrast to the concrete. Timber detailing and structural planting complement the hard elements to create a very dramatic and engaging scheme.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

This was an incredibly challenging scheme and a complicated build. Excellent precision is evident at the early stages and the contractor has demonstrated a high level of both technical and managerial accomplishment to complete the project to an extremely high standard, achieving the designer’s and the clients’ vision.

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - BETWEEN £100K - £250K BLUEFISH LANDSCAPING CONTRACTORS THE SWIMMING POOL TERRACE Designer Nettles & Petals Design Main Contractor/ Maintenance Contractor BlueFish Landscaping Contractors Suppliers AJ Brickcutters, Clear Water Revival, GSL Southern, Light Your Garden, London Stone The contractor’s simple, quality design for the clients’ swimming pool terrace complements the new pool and pool building and the whole sits comfortably and discreetly within the wider garden landscape. Extensive excavation and site preparation work, including demolition, was carried out by the contractor prior to construction of the pool and pool house by others. The new terracing with dining area, impressive barbecue feature, an outdoor kitchen conveying Mediterranean rustic charm, areas for relaxation, and an Onsen spa pool, were constructed with excellent attention to detail and to a very high standard by the contractor.

HG LANDSCAPES SURREY GARDEN Designer Cedar Nursery Main Contractor/Maintenance Contractor HG Landscapes Suppliers Cedar Nursery, Evergreen Exterior, Silverlands Stone The contractor worked closely with the client, amending, adapting and improving the initial concept design as the work progressed to create this luxurious and elegant outdoor space. The garden is on three levels; next to the house an expansive terrace contains a dining area with pergola and an outdoor kitchen. Steps lead down from the centre of the main terrace to a lawn, and to one side is a seating area with cantilevered timber bench seating and a fire pit. The lower lawn is reached by a further flight of steps. Flowerbeds throughout the scheme contain a beautiful selection of plants, shrubs and trees.

GRADUATE GARDENERS PRIVATE GARDEN IN SHEEPSCOMBE Designer/Main Contractor Graduate Gardeners Suppliers Cotswold Stone Quarries, Nidagravel UK, Rand & Asquith, Viridis, Wildflower Turf Difficult site topography and the property’s Grade II Listed status presented the contractor with a challenging design brief to create a new, repositioned driveway, parking area, space for a garage and stable, and a garden immediately adjacent to this Georgian manor. Planning permission and Listed Building consent was required and the choice of materials was therefore vital for the project’s success. Major re-contouring of the lower lawn and wildflower areas allowed all spoil generated to be kept on site. The completed project links beautifully with the existing areas of the garden and with the landscape beyond.

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - BETWEEN £100K - £250K HG LANDSCAPES ST MARGARET’S Designer Josh Ward Garden Design Main Contractor/Maintenance Contractor HG Landscapes Suppliers Elmwood Fencing, Fulham Timber, Landscapeplus, Mandarin Stone The design for this long garden has a modern Scandinavian feel. Grey riven slate for terracing, steps and cladding to raised flower beds gives a clean, contemporary look to the space. An entertaining terrace adjacent to the house looks out across an extensive lawn bordered by a path and raised flower beds. An existing large yew stands in front and to the side of a cedar-clad garden office at the end of the garden and more raised beds planted with grasses and ferns lead to a sheltered seating area in front of the office with views back across the garden to the house.

BESPOKE STONE WALLING PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE Main Contractor Bespoke Stone Walling The original walled kitchen garden of this large private estate had been derelict for many years. Working to a plan drafted by the current Head Gardener, the contractor began by repairing and reinstating the garden’s rear wall, ready for construction of a large greenhouse. Prior to construction of the raised beds using block work and dry stone cladding, irrigation and rainwater harvesting systems were installed. The timeless look of this extensive project has been achieved by the expert selection and use of reclaimed materials and stone recovered from walls demolished on site, saving time, money and potential supplier delays resulting from COVID.

ESSE LANDSCAPES THICKET RISE Client Vicky & Terry Emmerson Designer The Lovely Garden Main Contractor Esse Landscapes Suppliers London Stone, Marshalls, Millboard, Palmstead Nurseries, Wealden Oak The original garden for this new-build property contained minimal paving and very limited planting, with much of the garden invisible from the main living areas. The clients purchased a tract of woodland beyond their rear boundary and, although sloping sharply away, a cantilevered deck seating area was constructed, extending into the wood and dramatically opening the view from the house. A sunken dining area with outdoor kitchen leads off the main terrace and a pergola and large oak-framed summerhouse with gym and open seating area with a log burner overlooks a raised boardwalk with lush planting and a central water feature.

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - OVER £250K GRADUATE GARDENERS PRIVATE GARDEN, CHELTENHAM

Designer/Main Contractor Graduate Gardeners Suppliers Cirencester Civil Engineering, Cotswold Stone Quarries, Falcon Balustrades, Wildflower Turf This large house on the side of Cleve Hill, with far-reaching views across Cheltenham to the Welsh Hills, was undergoing a total renovation when the contractor was first approached to look at the project. The client’s brief was to maximise the view, provide much better parking, enhance the entrance, and create more usable space within the garden as both upper and lower gardens were steeply sloping. There were a number of significant areas of construction, most notably and by far the most impressive was the construction of the traditional dry stone retaining wall. A structural engineer was brought in as Cleeve Hill is notorious for movement and there would be no foundation for the wall other than the stone beneath the ground. Over 600 tons of material was excavated and over 300 tons of walling stone used, each piece placed by hand to create a wall 1.5m deep at the base (500mm below ground level) and 600mm at the top, with the finished height an average of 1.8m. The in-house design includes a beautiful contemporary Italianate courtyard and wildflower meadows above the retaining walls. Porcelain was used throughout for all the paved surfaces other than the steps; a sophisticated planting scheme completes the design.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

The attention to detail, outstanding finish, and wonderful workmanship in evidence in this scheme represents excellence at all levels. The in-house designer has fulfilled the client’s brief with imagination, courage and panache and the contractor’s build team have surpassed themselves, delivering a beautiful, breath-taking setting for the refurbished property.

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - OVER £250K BUTLER LANDSCAPES FARM HOUSE GARDENS Designer/Main Contractor Butler Landscapes Suppliers Hartley Botanics, Hilliers Nurseries, Merebrook Pond Plants, Morgans of Oswestry Builders Merchant, Practicality Brown Approximately four acres of land have been landscaped as part of a farmhouse refurbishment, providing a formal front garden, a sunken garden and a kitchen garden near to the house, and a new lake and surrounding landscaping for the paddock. Trees and flowing lawns with wildflower meadows frame all areas. The lake, positioned at the lowest point of the garden to absorb the land-drained water, encourages wildlife. The kitchen garden has oak raised beds, a greenhouse and an adjacent patio. The large circular sunken garden with water feature is surrounded by planting and provides shelter from the prevailing wind and views to the Welsh Hills.

The design for this podium garden in an expensive area of London presented considerable construction and logistical challenges to achieve this subtle yet show-stopping scheme. Areas for formal dining, relaxing, and cooking, and a lawn with planting, all break away from the geometry of the house. The custom water feature - a crystal-clear 4-metre dish manufactured from a single piece of acrylic – is a major focal point. The hard landscape was constructed one metre up from basement to ground level, creating technical difficulties with drainage and construction. Large plant species are accommodated in raised planting beds edged in Corten Steel.

WRIGHT LANDSCAPES HILL TOP Architect/Designer Barnes Walker Main Contractor DSBP Suppliers Freeland Horticulture, Harrowden Turf, Marshalls, MKM, Smits Nurseries The landscape scheme surrounding this extensive residential property comprises luxury hardscaped surfaces and high-quality planting throughout. As it flows through the garden key focal points draw the eye. From the woodland plant themed floating steps that lead to the underground swimming pool, to the granite detail that stretches across the lawn creating the outline of a ship’s bow, the space offers much to enjoy. To reduce standing water in some areas of the garden major excavation was required, followed by layering rock, aggregate and topsoil. Different planting palettes will result in this beautiful space shifting and changing throughout the year as it establishes.

The contractor started the soft landscaping in 2017 and encountered numerous challenges, many associated with the demands and deadlines linked to working with hundreds of other contractors on a construction site. Today the development boasts features including wildflower meadows, woodland and glade planting, large-scale tree planting, native hedge planting, and marginal and submerged planting to the vast attenuation ponds. All works, including the installation of coir rolls and matting for stabilisation of the stream and ponds, have been completed by the contractor.

SOFT LANDSCAPING CONSTRUCTION (NON-DOMESTIC) – OVER £500K GAVIN JONES TEESSIDE PARK

Architect Macgregor Smith Main Contractor Bowmer + Kirkland Maintenance Contractor Nurture Landscapes Suppliers Bruns-Pflanzen-Export GmbH & Co. KG, Green-tech, Johnsons of Whixley, Logic Street & Park Furniture, Smits Nurseries As part of the refurbishment of this major retail development, the owners wanted to create more space outside the shop fronts and add two key pedestrian routes. The contractor was awarded the soft landscaping package, working for main contractors Bowmer + Kirkland and alongside landscape architects Macgregor Smith. The contractor tagged all the trees for the scheme and organised the contract growing of all shrub and herbaceous plant material. A total of 193 semi-mature trees and over 25,000 shrubs were planted by the contractor, who also installed the Corten steel edging, bespoke timber seating, a Corten steel play wall, timber play equipment and soft surfacing. Construction was carried out over nearly two years, which required excellent project management and co-ordination of the structured closing of sections of the car park and walkways to ensure optimum health and safety standards and work production were maintained, resulting in minimal interruption to site visitors.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

An excellent client/design team/ contractor relationship is evident in this impressive scheme, as is the depth of experience of the contractor. The soft planting throughout has established incredibly well and has tremendous impact. The limited planting palette, including beautiful multi-stem trees, is hugely appealing and the entire retail development is benefitting markedly from this landscaping investment.

Client Thirdway Contracts Architect Landscape Perspective Designer Ann Rowland Main Contractor NAO Landscapes Suppliers APEX Stone, Designs For City Spaces, George Lines, Johnsons of Whixley, Soil & Stone The contractor was commissioned to build a relaxed and impactful hard landscaping scheme to enhance the appearance of this refurbished office building in West London, adding a communal green space to what had been an unused access road with parking. Bespoke Corten steel planters are an impressive highlight of the scheme and resin bound surfacing with steel edging, block paving, and decking around bespoke bench features all contribute to transforming a hard urban landscape into a bright, modern, pedestrian-friendly space with trees and soft planting.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

The overall success of this scheme is due in no small part to the quality of the construction and the care with which some retro-fitted elements have been installed. Good detailing is in evidence throughout and the contractor’s reputation for successfully delivering urban hard landscaping schemes of this type has certainly been reinforced with this project.

HARD LANDSCAPING CONSTRUCTION (NON-DOMESTIC) - OVER £500K GAVIN JONES THE GLEBE

Architect Formation Architects Designer Tom Stuart-Smith Landscape Design Main Contractor Multiplex Construction Europe Suppliers Alan Haywood Joinery, Artorius Faber, Lichen Garden Antiques, Topp & Co, Waterscapes The Glebe project entailed the extension and conversion of a 1914 school building off the King’s Road, Chelsea, to create six extensive luxury residential dwellings of the very highest quality, and the construction of two new, multi-level luxury residential villas in the old school grounds. The original brickwork facades of the school were retained and held in place while the majority of the building behind was demolished. An internal concrete frame and internal structure was constructed, together with double basements extending to the site boundaries. The contractor was initially awarded the hard and soft landscape packages for the school area but this was followed by a variation to include the area surrounding the two villas. Over a three year period the contractor supplied and installed all aspects of this high-quality landscape scheme, which includes exquisitely laid sett work, the careful selection and laying of reclaimed Yorkstone for courtyard areas, and the construction of driveways and paths. The quality of the hard landscaping is, by itself, outstanding but when seen as a whole with the excellent soft planting, this scheme is truly beautiful.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

Every aspect of this hard landscaping scheme was absolutely faultless with every corner of the site reflecting landscaping and project management excellence. What was particularly impressive and worthy of special commendation was that, despite the extensive three year duration of the contract, there was absolutely no sign whatsoever of contract fatigue or a slippage in standards by the contractor. This is a truly amazing achievement.

HARD LANDSCAPING CONSTRUCTION (NON-DOMESTIC) - OVER £500K IDVERDE WHITFIELD GARDENS Client Camden Council Architect/Designer LDA Design Main Contractor idverde Suppliers CED Stone Group, Hillier Nurseries, Robin Tacchi Plants, Total Protection, Woodscape The regeneration of Whitfield Gardens is part of the London Borough of Camden’s West End Project. The contractor was appointed to re-model the space with an ambitious and technical scheme that has greatly enhanced the area. The works included the installation of Portuguese granite paving, bespoke planters, street furniture and lighting, and works to the iconic Fitzrovia mural. The site boundary to existing buildings on three sides was tight and regular communication with the residents, including private home owners, council tenants and businesses, was crucial to the project’s success.

IDVERDE SOUTH THAMESMEAD PUBLIC REALM Client Peabody Architect/Designer Southmere – LUC; Parkview – Levitt Bernstein Main Contractor idverde Suppliers Advanced Groundwork Supplies, Bourne Amenity, Hillier Nurseries, MCM, Robin Tacchi Plants This project has transformed the public realm across the Southmere and Parkview neighbourhoods of Thamesmead, London, as part of the area’s ongoing regeneration. Greening the environment to residents’ doorsteps, the works included the removal of extensive areas of existing hard landscaping and contaminated sub-base material and incorporating raised planting beds into the design to soften the brutalist architecture of the surrounding buildings. Signature street trees have been planted along courtyards and main routes and a SuDS system of swales and rain gardens adds to the aesthetics. Opportunities for play are present across the scheme and upgraded street lighting has improved security.

ELITE LANDSCAPES WHITE CITY LIVING, PHASE 1 Architect/Designer Murdoch Wickham Main Contractor St James Maintenance Contractor Elite Landscapes Suppliers Fountains Direct, Hardscape, Waterwise, Woodscape White City Living is a major development by the Berkeley Group situated opposite the BBC Studios and adjacent to Westfield London Shopping Centre, in the heart of West London. The contractor carried out all hard and soft landscaping works for Phase 1 of the scheme. Initial groundworks, including ducting for cabling and services, were completed prior to the construction of four beautiful water features and a large and impressive granite amphitheatre. The finish and detailing of the hard landscaping across the site reflects the quality of the apartments and is further enhanced by the mature trees, large planting beds and extensive lawns.

COMMUNITY AND SCHOOLS DEVELOPMENT WRIGHT LANDSCAPES RHS COMMUNITY & LEARNING GARDEN

Client Royal Horticultural Society Architect/Designer Katie Irvin Designer Tom Stuart-Smith Landscape Design Main Contractor/Maintenance Contractor Royal Horticultural Society Suppliers AGS, HMS Welding, MKM, Timber Direct The Community & Learning Garden at RHS Bridgewater is just a part of a large-scale redevelopment by the RHS of the historic 154 acre Worsley New Hall estate, to the west of Manchester. Embracing the site’s heritage, innovative designs for the garden by RHS horticulturist Katie Irvin also look to the future and interweave elements of Salford’s own local communities and traditions. The contractor delivered the hard and soft landscaping for the Community Grow Garden, carrying out initial ground preparation, earthworks, excavation, and installation of a complex drainage system to counter poor natural drainage on the site. Large bespoke oak sleeper raised beds at different heights were constructed in a honeycomb design, and topsoil spread to all planting areas. Responsibility for each raised bed has been passed to a community group in the area. Golden self-binding gravel paths take the visitor through the garden and metal archways lead to the central seating area. An irrigation system has also been installed and timber tracks constructed to allow for the movement of planters.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

The misleading visual simplicity of this scheme belies the copious amount of below ground works unseen by the visitor. Additionally, the complex geometry of the raised beds across the garden required a huge amount of precise setting out. The contractor has embraced this prestigious scheme and delivered the project to the very highest standards.

Once cleared, the whole area was remodelled and graded to form a multi-level design using as much site-won material as possible to form the contours, thus preventing muck-away and extra traffic. The playground features a number of exciting new items, including a zip wire and wooden climbing structures, as well as a water play area that required a high degree of engineering expertise. Benefitting from the COVID lockdowns, the soft landscaping has established well, adding to the sense of adventure and discovery.

New play equipment was installed and a compound constructed for the water management system serving the new water play area. The works also included the construction of a refreshment kiosk and changing facilities and hard and soft landscaping across the site.

REGENERATION SCHEME – UNDER £500K P1 SOLUTIONS PALACE OF HOLYROOD HOUSE – PHYSIC GARDEN

Architect/Designer J&L Gibbons Main Contractor Colorado Construction Maintenance Contractor P1 Solutions Suppliers Bramhall 1840, Green-tech, Johnsons of Whixley, Keyline, Tradstocks The former Physic Garden of the Palace of Holyrood House in Edinburgh was one of the first in Britain. This scheme has seen the medieval garden and the gardens of the sacrist reimagined. The new garden consists of three distinct areas, each representing a phase in the Palace’s 900-year history. A flowering meadow of medicinal plants evokes the 15thcentury monastic gardens of Holyrood Abbey. Nearby, flowering bulbs, including crocuses, tulips and alliums, have been planted in a geometric pattern to reflect the design of 17th-century gardens. A third area reimagines the physic garden that was established in the Palace grounds 350 years ago to teach students about the medicinal properties of plants and to provide pharmacists with fresh materials. Raised beds, planted with herbs and medicinal plants, incorporate woven willow panels and reference the medieval garden vernacular; they also avoid damaging the many surviving archaeological remains scattered across the area. The extension and repair of the existing whinstone terraces now accommodate educational groups and visitors and the re-levelling of the upper terrace provides unhindered access to and from the refurbished Abbey Strand building. New planting to the forecourt fountain reinterprets historic tapestries found within the palace, now outside in a living fabric brimming with colour and vigour.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

The contractor has installed the strong design for this historic and iconic space with care, skill and passion. All hard elements have been precisely and expertly tackled and the ground modelling and planting throughout has been executed with great attention to detail. This is a lovely scheme that respects and reflects the historic setting.

The parterre comprises mirror image compartments set off a central line with a clear central section. Using laser technology the contractor removed a maximum 75mm of soil to level the site. The parterre design was formed in steel, initially bent to shape in the factory. When this proved to be unsuccessful, however, the contractor worked with a steel fabricator to design a system to bend the steel on site to precise CAD measurements. The steel was then tap welded and carefully positioned.

Client Salford City Council Architect/Designer Urban Vision Partnership Main Contractor P. Casey (Land Reclamation) Maintenance Contractor Salford City Council Suppliers CJ Gray Plant Hire, DP Structures, Hardscape, Scartworks Worsley Delph is a site of international importance for its role in the world’s first Industrial Revolution. It is the start of 46 miles of tunnels that lead to a network of underground mines, and the start of the Bridgewater Canal, which was constructed in 1761 to take coal from the mines into Manchester and beyond. Over the years the area had fallen into disrepair and this regeneration scheme has enhanced an historically important site by conserving and restoring the fabric, structures and artefacts, improving the visual setting, and providing better interpretation to improve understanding of the site’s historical significance. Whilst maximising public access it was also vitally important to protect the site’s ecology. The works included the removal of 5,000m³ of silt from the Delph basin and waterways; construction of a new three-tiered, cantilevered viewing platform; restoration of Worsley Road bridge; installation of seating and interpretation features; enhanced pedestrian accessibility from Worsley Village, including resurfacing of paths; seating areas, signage and a new pedestrian refuge on Worsley Road; new lighting, including to pedestrian areas and to illuminate the tunnels and features within the site; reconstruction of Alphabet foot bridge; tree clearance and landscaping works to improve the physical environment.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

This fascinating project has been sensitively and professionally executed by the contractor to a very high standard. Complex civil engineering, requiring good project management and the ability to work in partnership with the client and other organisations and stakeholders, was an important part of its delivery. This is an impressive scheme on all levels.

The contractor was appointed to carry out grounds maintenance at the site from February 2018 and tasked with bringing the site up to standard and delivering consistently high quality maintenance throughout. The contractor has worked hard to build a strong relationship with the client and, despite being based over 100 miles from the site, has met all the challenges with enthusiasm, including providing a fast turn-round on requests for additional works. The contract includes maintenance of all landscaped outdoor areas, including raised planters and hedging, flowerbeds with seasonal displays, lawns, paths and hardstanding. Indoor planters add impact to the scheme, which is watered by hand throughout.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

This is an uplifting and very well groomed site that reflects the standards expected by the client. The contractor’s plant choice is increasing biodiversity and shoppers are enjoying the environment for its own sake. The strong client/ contractor relationship is evident at all levels and is key to the success of this contract.

Client CBRE in partnership with MEPC Limited, Milton Park Architect ASA Landscape Architects Main Contractor Nurture Landscapes Suppliers AHS, Agrovista, ARC, Crowders Nurseries, Weed Management This 250-acre mixed use business and technology park is on the site of a former Ministry of Defence depot between the A34 and Didcot Power Station in Oxfordshire and is currently home to over 250 organisations. With more than 43 acres of open and landscaped space, the green spaces are a huge benefit to occupiers and visitors wanting outdoor areas in which to socialise, exercise, and hold informal meetings. The contractor has worked with the client to take an holistic approach to the grounds maintenance, continually improving the aesthetics, biodiversity, sustainability and, ultimately, the overall value of the client’s landscape asset. The site maintenance is split into three teams; one responsible for the high profile area of the park, comprising the main access road through the park and the grounds of the buildings on either side; one team takes care of the extensive grass cutting across the site, and a pruning team is responsible for shrub beds and hedges. The entire site is divided into maintenance ‘zones’, which helps control tasks and gives the contractor’s site supervisor immediate visibility as to where teams are working.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

The contractor’s on-site team is working closely with the client and landscape architect to create an environment that will bring new businesses onto this attractive park. As a result, the quality of the grounds maintenance is excellent and clearly visible in the finish to edges and lawns and the general care and attention throughout.

The first step in the North West Cambridge Development – the University of Cambridge’s largest capital project in its history - Eddington is designed to be a neighbourhood and not just a place to live. Planners worked with local groups to design and deliver the elements needed for a community to thrive, which include a school, nursery, shops, market square, community centre, sports facilities and 50 ha of green open spaces. The contractor commenced the grounds maintenance contract in 2018 with its full time on-site team of five, including an Assistant Operations Manager and one apprentice undergoing his NVQ in Horticulture. The team is responsible for all grassed areas, shrub beds and borders, hedges, hardstanding areas, tree maintenance, gritting and snow clearance, sports pitch maintenance (cricket and football), fencing and landscaping repairs, tree surveys and emergency tree works, and ongoing maintenance of the lagoon and watercourse SuDS and swales that provide the estate with its own water cleansing system. The contractor uses its own bespoke works management system, EcoLive, for client reports, which is accessed electronically, allowing management meetings to take place as part of site walk-arounds rather than in the office.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

Sustainability is everything in this attractive new district, and the contractor is making a major contribution by managing the grounds in an effective and environmentally-responsible manner and encouraging those who live and work there to engage with and care for their community by involving them in the stewardship of its green environment.

This large family garden is on a sloping site and features terraces leading up to the key focal point of a central lawn, which must be maintained to a very high standard. The design features South East Asian influences with a cascading water feature in the rear garden, and rockery water feature in the front. The contractor took over maintenance of the garden on its completion and, over the years, has developed the original planting scheme whilst keeping true to the designer’s original vision. The deep and luxuriant planting is now an important aspect of the garden’s aesthetics.

The design has created a series of spaces for formal dining, relaxing and cooking, with a lawn area and planting that breaks away from the geometry of the house. A custom water feature in the form of a crystal-clear 4-metre dish, manufactured from a single piece of acrylic, acts as a light-well for the basement staircase below. The planting scheme provides a variety of textures, with colours of burnt-orange, burgundy and lime green. The design and construction process was extremely collaborative, which helped to overcome the logistical and construction challenges presented by what is effectively a podium landscape, built up from the basement to ground level.

The triple height reception and restaurant, coworking spaces, feature amenity hub and town hall space are all flooded with natural light. The interior planting brief for the reception and café areas of the building, re-launched as Botanica Ditton Park, was to design and install a scheme to reflect both the Botanica name and the building’s parkland setting. Using a series of fabricated bespoke wooden and tile clad planters with integral seating, the interior planting includes 26 varieties of plants from 30cms up to 6m tall. 500+ plants on 20 Dutch trollies in total were planted on a cold December weekend. 7 pallets of peat free compost and LECA were used in the installation with the contractor’s team of 5 completing the majority of the planting in one very long day. In addition, an artificial green wall was created for the temporary marketing suite and preserved moss was used for the dedicated entrance/exit to the park.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

This is a stunning scheme, with excellent plant selection and installation. All plants have been expertly installed and, without exception, from the very large specimens dominating the planters in the café area, to those in the planters in the reception and coffee bar areas, every plant is thriving and seems completely at home in its new surroundings.

INTERIOR LANDSCAPE - MAINTENANCE NURTURE LANDSCAPES THE UK TRADE DESK

Client The UK Trade Desk Supplier Kobergs The interior planting scheme in the offices of this digital marketing company in the City of London comprises an impressive moss wall and 126 hydroponic displays, ranging from a single specimen plant to 3 metre troughs. There are also a number of free standing displays incorporating planting within joinery and floor voids. Planting with soft, leafy foliage is used with an interesting combination of textures and colours. Where live planting was not practical in high level areas, artificial ferns and trailing plants have been installed to enable the planting to flow through the space and lead the eye. The bold, impressive design represents the business’s pioneering approach and plays an important role within their working environment. The design has lifted the limitations of a traditional office by developing a community-focused landscape that caters for every personality and demographic. There are a number of challenges within the regular maintenance regime, including the high level planting, low light levels in the office space, and cabinet top troughs positioned by desks, which must be maintained with minimal disruption to a busy staff cohort.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

This beautiful display speaks volumes for the plant knowledge of the contractor and the care that is taken to ensure every installation stays in tip-top condition. Despite the challenges of low light, difficult access to some displays, and having to work around office staff, the greening of this office has brought tangible benefits to those working within it.

Architect/Designer/Main Contractor/ Maintenance Contractor Bluestone Landscapes Suppliers Deepdale Trees, Morgans Lifting Services, Specialist Aggregates, Tamar Nurseries, Tulip Art The client brief for this private penthouse apartment on the eighth floor of a new development in Lincoln’s Inn, Central London, was to create an oasis in the sky. The triple aspect outside spaces with glass facades enjoy stunning views of the City of London skyline and St Paul’s Cathedral and the challenge was to maintain these views whilst providing a degree of privacy. Two main seating areas and a dining space, together with smaller areas to sit and reflect, have been created using carefully selected trees, shrubs, and planting in custom designed and constructed interconnecting planters, which form organic, flowing borders around the perimeter. A special lightweight soil serviced with a bespoke irrigation system ensures the planters look at their best despite the challenging climatic conditions present in this exposed environment. A breath-taking lighting scheme creates an unexpected ambience on the London skyline. The challenging logistics that accompany any high level roof garden project in Central London were experienced here but the results speak for themselves and have delighted both the client and the building’s international developer, who is keen to look at future collaboration with the contractor.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

This is a beautiful, soothing and relaxing scheme created in what is a very narrow space. The stunning acid-edged aluminium planters provide a seamless thread through the design and the plant selection is entirely appropriate, framing the wonderful views of the City. Any number of superlatives could be used to describe this scheme – including gorgeous.

There is a natural flow from space to space within the podium landscape, with trees as way-finders, their canopies of lighter foliage providing dappled shade yet maintaining the light and views. Borders of soft mixed planting follow a naturally flowing path, blending and merging the transition from garden to garden, which seamlessly provide space for home-growing, homeworking and relaxation. Even residents’ pets have their own area complete with artificial grass. The contractor was responsible for the entire project from the drainage layer up, but excluding the paving. They supplied and planted all perennials, grasses, shrubs and bulbs, as well 100 individually tagged, extra heavy, standard and semi-mature AirPot® trees, contending with variable weather conditions, extenuating delivery conditions, a rigorous booking-in system for deliveries – and a pandemic.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

The sense of pride in a job well done is clearly evident in this stunning scheme, which gives the impressive Canada Gardens apartments an equally impressive multi-use outdoor space. All plants, trees and grassed areas have established well and the finish throughout is very competent. The contractor can be rightly proud of its team.

The main amenity buildings cover 5,277m2 of floor area and feature an over sailing, dynamic roof with eleven separate green roof sections installed in a unique ‘ribbon’ undulating design. One of the green roof ribbons arches over the North East section of an adjoining 100 room hotel building. The Geo Green extensive green roof system is integral to the design, helping tie the building into the surrounding landscape by reflecting the visual layers of landform, woodland and water. The living roof was specified in accordance with the planning document’s landscape mitigation and green space strategy. This detailed the establishment of a wildflower meadow living roof to integrate the development within its surroundings and to contribute to the biodiversity/ecological value of the area. The facilities building includes a mix of sedum turfs and wildflower turfs, whilst the hotel building green roof is solely wildflower turf.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

The success of this impressive installation will be judged ultimately by the increase in biodiversity in the area, which is being monitored by ecologists. LIVING WALL INSTALLATION (EXTERIOR ONLY) YGS LANDSCAPES SHERFORD LIVING WALL

Client Sherford Consortium C/O Brookbanks Architect/Designer Lavigne Lonsdale Main Contractor GroundFix Maintenance Contractor YGS Landscapes Suppliers Access Irrigation, Dingle Nurseries, Green-tech, Hydrotech, Kernock Plants The client brief was to soften a 380 linear metre long Huesker geo-synthetic bank constructed to conceal quarry workings alongside the main approach to the new town of Sherford near Plymouth. The contractor’s ambitious solution was to create Sherford’s very own ‘Angel of the North’. The wall is south facing and, at one end, reaches 10m in height. Before planting could commence, the contractor installed a fully operational irrigation system to support and maintain over 26,000 individual plants during the prevailing extremely hot weather conditions. Working from MEWPs, the contractor planted every plant through a 100mm gap, cut in a specific way to avoid compromising the structure's integrity. Each planting pocket had compost, fertiliser and swell gel incorporated by hand. The process took three operatives six weeks and was made even more challenging by the extremely hot weather and teething problems with the irrigation system. Because of the site conditions and the scale of the project the client agreed to a very diverse planting palette, which would not only give year-round interest but would also establish well in the testing conditions. The works were completed ahead of schedule and considerably under budget.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

This uniquely spectacular project was embraced by the contractor, who refused to be daunted by its scale. The result of dogged determination in challenging conditions is a stunning, lush and varied wall of green that visitors to Sherford can marvel at as they drive into the new town; it is certainly a unique landmark.

The routes have all been landscaped and, wherever possible, they link existing green spaces and offer sustainable transport options. The project has improved the habitat value of 56 hectares of parks and open spaces for the benefit of both people and wildlife. The contractor planted over 3 million bulbs and a thousand trees, laid 75,000m2 of pictorial meadow and wildflower turf, wildflower seeded 100,000m2, and carried out a large amount of bed planting, hedgerow planting and Hedera screening to create a landscape to help Solihull’s local wildlife thrive and native species survive.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

This hugely successful scheme was logistically very complex for the contractor and its obvious success is down to their planning and to a programme of engagement with the local authority and the community, ensuring that the areas involved lived up to expectations. DESIGN EXCELLENCE – OVERALL SCHEME UNDER £50K ANDY KIRMAN MBALI CONTEMPORARY COURTYARD GARDEN

Architect Andy Kirman MBALI Main Contractor Kirman Design Suppliers C&W Berry, Denbigh Timber Products The design brief for the garden of this red brick, early 20th century, home near Preston was for a contemporary open space that would work harmoniously with a new garden room and provide views from the house. The area also needed to serve as an entry point to the property, and privacy issues caused by the proximity of adjacent houses and a road had to be addressed. Other requirements were for a generous dining/barbecue area for family occasions and an open plan aspect, flowing seamlessly from the garden room to the outsides spaces. The garden should, in essence, be an extension of the house and be able to be used in the evenings. The designer’s solution to the brief has delivered a hugely stylish, interesting yet understated garden with expansive areas of paving, softened by a beautiful limited palette of plants that provide structure and interest. Contemporary slat fencing, a Corten steel decorative panel in the dining area, and cube lighting in the relaxation area all serve to reflect the contemporary nature of the garden room as requested by the clients.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

A long, featureless and exposed space has been transformed into one of intimacy and interest by the designer. A number of outdoor rooms leading from the garden room deliver the utility required by the clients and give the property a sense of place. The restricted planting palette creates a feeling of calm and serenity in this beautiful scheme.

A reflecting pond, waterlilies and stepping stones complement the statue, evoking an ambience of calm and contemplation. An elliptical bench in concrete with an oak slatted seat curves around a matching table with wavy edge oak inlay. Porcelain paving produces a serene, seamless atmosphere. Planting is lush with a touch of the exotic, with Japanese maples, cannas, and bursts of colour filling deep borders. This garden provides a touch of escapist paradise in the heart of the city.

Having the vision and artistic talent to create a design is one thing, backing that vision up with detailed plans and drawings that provide the contractor with everything they need to realise that vision is quite another. This is undoubtedly a lovely garden with the brief met to the clients’ absolute satisfaction, but the designer’s technical expertise and ability to create outstanding plans and drawings is also to be fully applauded and recognised in this scheme; this is exemplary work.

DESIGN EXCELLENCE AWARD - OVERALL SCHEME OVER £100K GAVIN MCWILLIAM MBALI WEST LONDON GARDEN

Architect Guy Stansfield Architects Main Contractor RAI Developments & Landscape Associates Maintenance Contractor Gold and Wild Suppliers Allgreen Group, Deepdale Trees, The Garden Trellis Company, Water Artisans The design intention for this young family’s garden was to create a layered series of garden spaces, both front and rear, to deliver a sense of space and elegance, allowing light to penetrate the areas around the house yet creating a sense of privacy and calm. In the rear garden, water is introduced to create movement and sound and to optimise the play of light especially as the rill drops down towards the lowest level. Steps also feature as architectural elements creating interesting shadow play. At the top of the garden, beyond the lawn, is a paved seating area with a fire. There are additional paved areas for games and relaxation. The planting palette throughout is simple and layered to maximise the sense of light in the garden. Most borders are planted as ornamental meadow using mixes of perennials and ornamental grasses, exploiting colour, texture and movement. Specimen, multistemmed trees are used for sculptural effect and to create a greater sense of privacy in the gardens as a whole.

This is a superb design that handles the complex levels beautifully. The choice of materials is excellent and the design overall has created a space that flows seamlessly from level to level, accommodating the differing needs of a young family whilst retaining the elegance that the imposing Listed Building in the Holland Park conservation area deserves.

Architect/Designer/Main Contractor/ Maintenance Contractor DDON Planning & Design Inc. This project comprises the landscaping of the marketing suite for a new development of residential apartments, providing visitors to the show flat exhibition with an uplifting experience and a feel for the design concept and quality of the new development. The waterfalls, transparency spaces with atomised glass grilles, and a unique feather maple, establish the ambience as visitors enter the space. A single Chinese tallow leans over the extensive reflective lake and the landform design creates a unique look of constructed nature. There was close cooperation between client and contractors, which established a good foundation for the timely completion of the project within budget.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

This is a beautifully designed and realised space that reflects the client’s aspirations for the new residential development and communicates them to visitors and potential buyers. The limited planting palette creates a sense of calm and sophistication and the quality of the construction and materials reinforces the sense that this same attention to detail will be reflected in the new development.

BEST NEWCOMER TO BALI BLUESTONE LANDSCAPES LINCOLN SQUARE

This is an outstanding piece of roof garden landscaping where the contractor has demonstrated design, construction and planting flair. Whilst the views from the penthouse apartment are stunning they take nothing from the beauty of this space and the quality of its realisation. This is an excellent scheme that promises great things from a new BALI member.

BEST FIRST TIME ENTRANT BESPOKE STONE WALLING PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Designer/Maintenance Contractor Client Main Contractor Bespoke Stone Walling The original walled kitchen garden of this large private estate had been derelict for many years. Working to a plan drafted by the current Head Gardener, and liaising closely with English Heritage throughout the project, the contractor began by repairing and reinstating the garden’s rear wall, ready for construction of a large greenhouse. In advance of constructing the raised beds using block work and dry stone cladding, complex irrigation and rainwater harvesting systems were installed that would utilise run-off from the new greenhouse and paths. Wiring for the lighting scheme was also installed prior to the construction of the raised beds and paths. The timeless look of this extensive project has been achieved by the expert selection and use of reclaimed materials and stone recovered from the estate. Using these reclaimed materials saved time and money and avoided potential delays in material supply resulting from COVID. During lockdowns the contractor was able to work entirely independently and safely, completing the project to the client’s total satisfaction.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

The contractor responsible for this outstanding project is an artisan and craftsman in the truest sense of those words. This scheme is a direct reflection of his passion for and dedication to realising the vision of the client and the client’s Head Gardener to the very best of his professional ability, and doing so in testing times. It is an exemplar of professionalism of which all BALI contractors should be proud.

BEST DESIGN & BUILD GRADUATE GARDENERS PRIVATE GARDEN, CHELTENHAM

No stranger to success in the Design & Build category, the contractor has once again combined brave and intuitive design with construction perfection. A well-oiled machine, the designer and build team have worked seamlessly together, and in partnership with the client, to create a setting for this beautiful home that embraces and optimises the surrounding landscape and views.

BEST USE OF TECHNOLOGY CARRIER LANDSCAPES KELHAM HALL, NESFIELD PARTERRE DE BRODERIE

Architect/Designer Guy Taylor Associates Main Contractor Carrier Landscapes Suppliers Nottingham Steel Supplies, Specialised Ground Care, Stone Warehouse The restoration of the Nesfield-style Parterre de Broderie at Kelham Hall, Newark, was a lesson in precision and the innovative use of technology. The shapes were then filled with gravel in some sections and soil in others, ready for bedding plants.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

This is an impressive scheme requiring inch-perfect precision to ensure the pattern’s integrity. The contractor has demonstrated a willingness to think outside the box and employ modern technology to problem-solve and facilitate the scheme’s completion to the client’s satisfaction. This latest restoration of what is an important parterre garden should endure for many years to come.
