INTRODUCTION
IT’S THE BALI AWARDS…. BUT NOT QUITE AS WE KNOW IT! These are unprecedented times but not even the COVID-19 pandemic could stop the UK landscape industry’s premier Awards ceremony from going ahead in 2020, albeit ‘virtually’. The 44th BALI National Landscape Awards, in association with headline sponsor Green-tech, has given members of the British Association of Landscape Industries – the UK’s leading trade body for landscape professionals – the recognition they so richly deserve for delivering outstanding professional excellence, even when faced with the most challenging of situations. It is quite astonishing that neither the scope nor the quality of the schemes entered this year has been diminished by the challenges presented by lockdown and an utterly changed working environment. BALI members just got on with the job and saw no reason to compromise on excellence. We can all be enormously proud of what this year’s winners have achieved across the UK and internationally. They have proved, once again, that Registered Contractors and Designers set the bar for design, construction and maintenance, using innovative and high quality products and services that our Registered Affiliates continue to supply despite production and social distancing challenges. If this pandemic and lockdowns have shown the wider public anything, it is the value and importance of our precious green spaces to their individual and collective wellbeing. As an industry we already knew this but never before have we had such a receptive audience. Confined to their own homes during lockdown, people were grateful to escape to the outdoors for their permitted daily exercise. Those lucky enough to have gardens spent more time in them; those living in flats explored their local parks and communal green spaces; and when garden shows were cancelled and gardens that would normally be open to the public were closed, people realised just how much they missed these treasured resources. They say it’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good and that certainly seems the case for BALI Contractors, Designers and
BALI National Landscape Awards 2020
Affiliates who find themselves busier than ever during this time of COVID-19. The schemes in this year’s awards, from the smallest of urban gardens created from recycled and reclaimed materials, to children’s adventure playgrounds where they are challenged to explore and learn to deal with risk, all illustrate the value of outdoor space and of using professionals to create and maintain it. Working collaboratively with each other and with their clients and suppliers is the hallmark of BALI members and never has their professionalism been more important as clients place trust in them to deliver the highest quality projects safely. Although this year’s awards ceremony has had to take another form, it has still brought us together for a wonderful celebration of the very best our industry has to offer and we thank Chairman of the Adjudication Panel, John Melmoe, and his fellow judges for their incredible dedication over several difficult months. The support they have received from the awards team at Landscape House has enabled them to visit all the UK design and build schemes and speak to clients, designers and contractors. Each and every one of the large number of international entries this year was also carefully reviewed by the Adjudication Panel, who met, socially distanced, at the end of August to make their final decisions. The judging process is, without doubt, a mammoth undertaking and we are enormously grateful to everyone involved.
will undoubtedly go down in the annals of history for being the most challenging to pull off. The Adjudication Panel, supported by determined BALI staff, were adamant that the COVID issues would not undermine the integrity of the inspection and judging process. The entrants in all categories deserved this commitment, which has been delivered with gusto and enthusiasm. We were once again delighted to see members totally focused on submitting flawless projects, highlighting significant contributions from their staff. For the first time in the Awards’ history a number of schemes could not be separated on the merits of workmanship and quality alone, with the panel having to revert to the details in the entrants’ technical submissions to determine the ultimate winners.” Finally, the annual awards ceremony would not take place without the financial support of our headline sponsor Green-tech and our other industry sponsors listed on page 7 of this brochure. We thank them all for their invaluable support, particularly in this unprecedented year when their trust in our decision to deliver an online ceremony was so crucial, and look forward to the time when we can once again come together in person to celebrate BALI members’ success. Best wishes, Emily Feeney

The garden of this impressive new-build property has been designed with a strong axis and layout, providing amazing views from the house and taking full advantage of the countryside views beyond. The front garden and driveway set the tone but it is the rear garden that thrills. Its terrace with steps down to an extensive formal lawn bordered by hedging and boxed hornbeams, sunken patio with sculpture, pergola and secret garden all combine to deliver understated grandeur. See page 22 for full details. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This striking and beautiful garden embodies the qualities to which every landscaping professional should aspire and is a text book example of landscaping perfection. From the contractor’s interaction with the client, interpretation of the brief, development of the design, planning of the construction, sourcing of materials and planting stock, coordination of deliveries, management of the site, craftsmanship and horticultural expertise, to the aftercare advice and support, every element demonstrates a total commitment to excellence and great pride taken in handing over a scheme that has delighted the client. GREEN ACORN LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION WIGAN THREE TIER 2020
Client Paul Levick Architect/ Designer/Main Contractor/ Maintenance Contractor Green Acorn Landscape Design and Construction Suppliers Cheshire Sandstone, Grass Factory, Grassland Nurseries
The unusual shape of this garden space lends itself to an innovative solution and the contractor has successfully created a garden that maximises the space and extends the outdoor living area. A three tier approach gives each level its own identity: the lower level adjacent to the house provides space for outdoor dining and entertaining; the middle level is ideal for relaxing in the sunshine; and the upper level allows for relaxation in a more sheltered space. This layout also enables the clients to see the entire scheme from their kitchen window. The materials chosen for the garden are in keeping with the property’s brick construction, creating a uniform feel throughout. The bespoke red cedar fencing around the garden perimeter enhances the feeling of space whilst a feature wall, warm lighting, pergola and water feature add detail and character and create a relaxed ambience. Contemporary planting, consisting of box balls and spirals, and colourful perennials and grasses complete the stylish scheme, with a Trachycarpus fortunei (Chusan palm) providing the wow factor. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This is an exquisite scheme that has fully met the client’s exacting brief, transforming a small and awkward garden into a delightful space for outdoor living. All detailing is absolutely superb with meticulously laid paving and precise cutting in. It represents fantastic value for money and is, quite simply, faultless.

RICH GREEN GARDENS AN URBAN RETREAT - BERKSHIRE 2020
Designer/Main Contractor/ Maintenance Contractor Rich Green Gardens Suppliers Grant & Stone, Royale Stones, The Timber Merchants, Wargrave Nursery, World of Water
This narrow yet charming garden of a midterrace property is a sanctuary from the stresses of urban life. Serving the needs of a family of four with dogs it boasts a themed garden shelter influenced by the Middle East and constructed with materials re-purposed from the original garden, softwood decking and porcelain-paved seating/entertaining area. The lush planting scheme throughout adds to the exotic feel and is extremely low maintenance, as is the artificial lawn, which was chosen to provide the most appropriate surface to cope with the client’s pets.

BLUEFISH LANDSCAPING CONTRACTORS THE SOUTH COURTYARD 2020
Designer Nettles & Petals Design Main Contractor/Maintenance Contractor BlueFish Landscaping Contractors Suppliers Chambers Recycled Aggregates, Chelmer Valley Brick Co, Conserv, FTH Hire Group, Lateral Design Studio
The client brief for this small but sensitive project was to build a new entrance courtyard and provide a more attractive and defined access route to the main house. Formerly, visitors unfamiliar with the property would find it difficult to locate the main entrance as the front door was largely obscured from the access road. The new scheme, utilising beautiful brick and cobble work, has enhanced the appearance of the property overall and provided a much more open, inviting and welcoming approach to the front door. The design has retained and enhanced the magnolia trees to either side of the entrance gate and lavender now spills over and softens the new walls as visitors approach the farmhouse. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Although a relatively small project, the new path, retaining walls and planting leading to the front door of this beautifully restored 16th century farmhouse have been constructed by first class craftsmen to an extraordinarily high standard. The cobble and brickwork is exquisite and is further enhanced by the lovely planting scheme.

LANGLEA GARDEN DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION CURVILINEAR 2020
Architect/Designer/Main Contractor Langlea Garden Design & Construction Suppliers Chandlers Building Supplies, Evergreen Exterior, Natural Stone and Timber, Roundwood of Mayfield, Stamco
The design of this terrace unites the property beautifully with its picturesque surroundings. Its flowing, organic shape embraces both the stepped configuration of the house and the wider natural landscape and is a seemingly effortless extension of the client’s living and entertaining space. A bespoke oak pergola features retractable awnings that offer occasional respite from the sun, essential given the west facing exposed aspect. A cooking station emulating a rock shape is clad with travertine, each individual piece skilfully cut to the angular design. The planting style is naturalistic to suit the rural setting whilst featuring yearround interest to ensure the atmosphere is not lost in winter.
HG LANDSCAPES PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN TWICKENHAM 2020
Designer Claire Mee Garden Design Main Contractor/ Maintenance Contractor HG Landscapes Suppliers Elmwood Fencing, Fulham Timber, Garden Trellis Company, London Lawn Turf Company, London Reclaimed Brick Merchants
Located adjacent to a communal garden, this lovely Victorian property now also benefits from a rear garden that extends visually into the greenspace beyond. A small ellipse-shaped lawn is surrounded by largely reclaimed Yorkstone paving, which includes a lovely seating area for outdoor entertaining. The oak sleeper raised beds were constructed on site, as was the bespoke trellis work. Existing shrubs and climbers have been retained and give a sense of maturity whilst the new planting establishes. A carefully designed oak gate gives stolen glimpses of the larger communal garden beyond in this beautiful scheme.
GARDEN CLUB LONDON PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN LONDON 2020
Architect/Designer/Main Contractor/Maintenance Contractor Garden Club London Supplier Sunken Trampoline Co.
Following major renovations to this Victorian townhouse, the clients wanted to create a cosy green oasis with textural detail as an extension of their open-plan kitchen. Pleached trees and palms provide both privacy from neighbouring houses and a pleasing backdrop to the new interior space, with clay brick pavers and an iroko bench allowing entertaining to flow outside whilst also providing textural detail through the large sliding floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Recycled Yorkstone paving and a covering of Soleirolia provide gentle aesthetic coverage of the in-ground trampoline for the younger household members. Attention to detail ensures interfaces of materials and plants meet and flow to complement the adjacent living space.

The outline brief for this 300m2 garden was to create an interesting contemporary garden with plenty of trees, some trickling water and the feeling of being in a woodland glade. Elements include a series of weathered steel retained borders, porcelain paving and steps, a timber and aluminium pergola, a 2m dish water feature, and a new lawn and planting, including a copse of birch trees and various smaller trees throughout. Restricted access for plant and materials provided a major challenge, as did appalling weather throughout the construction period but the resulting scheme has transformed the space to meet the client brief. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The attention to detail throughout this charming scheme has clearly delighted the clients. The timber and aluminium zigzag pergola, water feature and extensive hard landscaping are finished to an exceptionally high standard, with the fall across the steps expertly continued in the construction and placing of the Corten steel raised planters.

The rear garden, roof terraces and front garden of this property have been transformed to create a minimalist contemplative space. There are bespoke containers with evergreen and seasonal colour on the terraces, whilst the front garden centrepiece is one enormous container planted with an equally large Acer palmatum. The rear garden needed substantial work, including the removal of retaining walls, deck and gravel, to create a largely planted garden that required new soils to support the dense planting scheme of Magnolia grandiflora and 35m2 of Pachysandra terminalis, which covers the garden floor.
GRADUATE GARDENERS PRIVATE GARDEN, EWEN, GLOUCESTERSHIRE 2020
Designer/Main Contractor Graduate Gardeners Suppliers County Building Supplies, Landscapeplus, Viridis
The brief for this scheme was to create a design that linked the new house extension with the garden and swimming pool, which sits at an awkward angle to the house. Extensive paving around the pool and to the rear of the house and extension is broken up by millboard decking in the seating area, the colour of which complements that of the extension. A rendered retaining wall maximises the space and contrasts with the surrounding Cotswold stone walls. A central planted border creates colour and interest within the space and draws the eye away from the pool – a key requirement of the brief.
GRADUATE GARDENERS PRIVATE GARDEN, CHELTENHAM, GLOUCESTERSHIRE 2020
Designer/Main Contractor Graduate Gardeners Suppliers County Building Supplies, Landscapeplus, Senior Steel, Viridis
Following the property’s redevelopment and the completion of some landscaping works, the clients wanted a large Leylandii boundary hedge removed and the terrace area re-modelled. A large, slatted cedar fence has been installed to create screening from the neighbouring property and a well-engineered cantilevered pergola constructed to blend seamlessly with the cedar fencing and provide some shade over the main seating and entertaining area. The powder coated finish to the steel is in the same colour as used on the house and the millboard terrace decking, helping to link and anchor the main focal point of the design.

PWP LANDSCAPE DESIGN PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN YORKSHIRE 2020
Designer/Main Contractor PWP Landscape Design Suppliers David Harber, GH Brooks, Lindum Turf, Marshalls, Riverside Topsoil
The client’s brief for the garden of this impressive new-build property was to create a striking formal garden with a strong axis and layout, giving an amazing outlook from the house with colour and year-round interest and taking full advantage of the wonderful countryside views beyond. The property is located on a narrow country lane, which necessitated all landscaping materials for the rear garden, including aggregates, soil, turf, porcelain paving, steels and plant stock, to be craned over the house whilst it was still under construction. The front garden and driveway make an impressive entrance to the property. To the rear, steps lead from the main terrace of the house down to an extensive formal lawn, which is bordered by box, yew and Portuguese laurel hedging with boxed hornbeams bordering the paths on either side. A contemporary steel pergola provides a partially shaded seating area halfway down and to one side of the lawn, beyond which is a secret garden. At the end of the garden, formal beds planted with alliums provide a stunning setting for the central sunken walled patio containing a David Harber ‘Filium’ sculpture. Finally, four fastigiate oaks frame the countryside beyond. Beautiful lighting brings the garden to life at night, highlighting the trees, the sculpture and other features. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Despite unbelievably challenging logistics and having to build this garden whilst the new-build house was under construction, this contractor has demonstrated superb workmanship across every aspect of the scheme. Precision cutting of the hard elements and expert selection and planting of quality stock has resulted in faultless landscaping perfection and an ecstatic client.

The front and rear gardens of this Edwardian property lacked impact and coherence and were in need of a design that would, first and foremost, create structure in the immediate areas around the house more in keeping with its period and then blend this into a more organic and naturalistic landscape further from the property. Working closely with the property’s owners to interpret their vision the contractor created a place of enduring meaning and value through significant commitment to quality and attention to detail.

LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATES PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN ESHER, SURREY 2020
Designer HMW Studio Main Contractor/Maintenance Contractor Landscape Associates Suppliers Deepdale Trees, Johnsons Wellfield
Working with designer Henrietta Wicks, the contractor carried out all hard and soft landscaping to the front and rear gardens of this traditionally-styled modern property, including the construction of a new swimming pool, the installation of a hot tub and the renovation of the pool house. The hard landscaping and construction elements included all excavations and earthworks; the construction of decking areas, retaining walls, steps and terraces; and laying the natural stone paving and resin bound gravel. All trees, shrubs, topiaries and herbaceous plants were supplied and planted by the contractor. The installation of a new gas supply, all drainage requirements and the lighting and irrigation also formed part of this major project. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Very high quality workmanship and excellent attention to detail across both hard and soft elements have been demonstrated in this extensive front and rear garden scheme. As the project progressed, the contractor adapted to changing circumstances, taking on the construction of the swimming pool and upgrade of the pool house.

DONOVAN LANDSCAPES PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN EAST SUSSEX 2020
Architect/Designer Marian Boswall Landscape Architects Main Contractor Donovan Landscapes Suppliers Chandlers Building Supplies, Johnsons Wellfield, Lambs Philpots Quarry
This new build classical property sits in a beautiful private valley on a steep south-facing slope, surrounded by trees, and with its own natural spring-fed stream. A series of formal garden spaces have been created to provide areas of intimacy and shelter for family gatherings and quiet moments, and space for celebrating the wonderful views. The indigenous sandstone has been used to create walls and to fill retaining gabions on the slope. Rainwater is harvested with a dipping pond and run-off into a new tiered pond, whilst ground source heat pumps heat the new house from the adjoining meadow.
THE GARDEN BUILDERS PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN PETWORTH, WEST SUSSEX 2020
Designer Lynne Marcus Garden Design Main Contractor The Garden Builders Suppliers Breedon Specialist Aggregates, Horsham Stone and Reclamation, Wildflower Turf
The complete re-design of this beautiful traditional Sussex garden by Lynne Marcus MBALI has been successfully implemented to open up hidden, far reaching views of the South Downs. Formerly disjointed garden spaces and buildings have been brought together by winding paths to create an harmonious, flowing space that leads gently down to the swimming pool. The blending of new and existing materials to create paths, walls and paving, and the newlyconstructed central rill, has been beautifully managed, giving the scheme an entirely established feel. The planting scheme, which combines newlyplanted low-maintenance species with areas of retained mature plants, is entirely appropriate to the setting.

The landscape design for this new-build house required significant earthworks and a large retaining wall to shape the new levels for the rear garden. A large patio forms the main outdoor living space adjacent to the house with uninterrupted views of the Surrey Hills. An impressive set of floating steps, with prairie style herbaceous planting to either side, leads down to the formal lawn, which is bordered by pleached hornbeam and yew hedging. The existing tennis court is largely hidden from view on the lower tier. Evergreen and lowmaintenance planting is used to the front of the house and in more shaded areas.

LANDFORM CONSULTANTS COTTONMILL SPA 2020
Designer Ann-Marie Powell Gardens Main Contractor Landform Consultants
This exclusive membership spa is attached to a well-established, privately owned hotel. The brand new spa and treatment building, together with its completely new garden, is aimed at the top end of the spa market. Although relatively compact, the garden, which was designed by Ann-Marie Powell, features private day beds, two hot tubs and an indoor/ outdoor swimming pool, as well as relaxation areas and a gas fire-pit. Precise and detailed hard landscape construction is clearly evident around the existing protected trees, in the water features and in the intricate porcelain paving, creating an intimate, secluded and calming space. The contractor carried out all aspects of the hard and soft landscaping, including the installation of complex irrigation and lighting systems. Working to tight deadlines and balancing the logistics of car park resurfacing works during the programme, this was a challenging project, both technically and logistically. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This complex project required the contractor’s expert coordination of multiple trades and specialists to deliver what is an absolutely beautiful scheme. Phenomenal attention to detail across all trades has resulted in a very high quality finish, in keeping with the required ambience of this luxury country hotel and spa.

The contractor was commissioned to build a formal, impactful and high quality hard landscape scheme, designed by landscape architects Murdoch Wickham, as part of the marketing suite for this large scale Berkeley Homes development in West Ham, London. Twelve Trees Park will offer 3,800 homes, built around 12 acres of landscaped green space. The contractor installed all aspects including paving, raised planters, fencing and lighting and constructed a resin bound car park to the rear of the suite. Client Charterhouse School Architect LUC Main Contractor Blakedown Landscapes (SE) Maintenance Contractor Charterhouse School
The project to construct this new car park with car charging points, covered cycle storage area and lighting in the impressive grounds of Charterhouse public school had to be achieved within several constraints. A 90mm gas main running through the centre of the site and mature trees to the north required careful planning and hand digging to large sections of the works. A sustainable drainage system was installed, featuring porous parking bays with attenuation, softened with trees and hedging. A large pit in the centre of the car park was excavated and the trees planted in a crate system giving them sufficient room to grow over time.

Greenford Quay is a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood on the banks of the historic Grand Union canal in West London. Phase 1B is the first phase of the overall scheme, consisting of the central square at the heart of the development and including the canalside amphitheatre, already a key attraction for residents and public alike. The contractor designed, supplied and installed all works to the public realm. Key hard elements of the project included extensive civil and structural design and installation; water features; external lighting; CCTV and data systems; linear and below ground drainage; paving and cladding detailing; masonry design and sampling; and road and footpaths for adoption by the London Borough of Ealing. The contractor delivered the majority of these works in-house with its own teams, whilst also fulfilling its duties as principal contractor. Specialist subcontractors were used for the water features, irrigation, surfacing and resin bound gravel. Working diligently to design, supply and install the ambitious design to the highest quality, the contractor sourced a huge range of bespoke materials with its supply chain partners, working very closely with the client and architect to fully realise their joint ambitions for the scheme. This shared determination and focus on quality has resulted in a beautiful new public space. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The contractor has taken great pride in this very complex public realm scheme, setting high standards and demonstrating a high level of professionalism in its execution. The quality installation of all hard elements, including brickwork, extensive paving, Corten steel planters, seating and reclaimed setts from this former factory site, is consistent throughout.

The client wished for their garden to be a calm, beautiful and restful place in which to relax and be reflective. Secluded and private seating areas were required and the ethos of the garden was to reuse and recycle as much as possible in order to reduce its carbon footprint. From the outset this was to be a creative collaboration between client (writer and artist), garden designer and landscaper and the landscaper was appointed on the basis of working loosely and creatively with the designer on site - a small and personal team to create the best outcome from the restricted site. Seating areas, pergola and connecting pathway form the main structure, which has been embellished with interesting and unique items such as seating, pots, shelving and ornamentation. Much was sourced from reclamation yards and markets by designer and client visits with advice from the landscaper regarding installation, thus allowing the correct purchase decisions to be made. The planting includes three silver birches to give immediate impact, with a relaxing purple, blue, soft pink and white palette for the rest of the planting scheme. JUDGES’ COMMENTS

TIVOLI GROUP PROJECT PEACH 2020
Designer/Main Contractor Tivoli Group
The client brief was to design, install and maintain a natural and contemporary interior planting scheme to support the high quality working environment required for the 2,500 employees at the company’s headquarters. The brief further required that the planting scheme not only comply with the sustainability goals of the building’s LEED and BREEAM accreditations but also employ the feng shui principles that all the business’s buildings around the world embrace. The 11 storey building is one of the greenest in Birmingham and the first to be constructed to the standards required by the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold accreditation, leading to reduced waste and energy consumption. The building has been designed to create a new generation of workplace fit for the future, which is open, light and encourages collaboration. The interior planting scheme, maintained by the contractor under a 5 year contract that commenced in 2018, includes the 5,500 plants forming a green wall from the ground floor atrium to the 10th floor lift lobby and a variety of interior plants located in 508 containers distributed over all 11 floors. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Enthusiastic staff maintain this extensive scheme to a high standard under difficult circumstances outside of the contractor’s control. All containers are hand watered, largely out of hours, and plants are surviving well, despite low light levels during periods of COVID-19 home working, where lights in this energyefficient building go out when rooms are unused.

BOWLES & WYER CENTRAL LONDON ROOF GARDEN 2020
Architect Lucy Wilcox & Ana Sanchez-Martin Designer Lucy Wilcox Garden Design Main Contractor/Maintenance Contractor Bowles & Wyer Suppliers Bourne Amenity, Outdoor Design, Palmstead Nurseries, Treebox
This private roof garden forms part of a high-end residential development in Central London. The client’s aim was to create an attractive foreground to the panoramic city views beyond, as well as an inviting space in which to relax and entertain guests. Designers Lucy Willcox and Ana SanchezMartin created an innovative scheme, based around a structural ribbon flowing through the space forming seating, a breakfast bar and a screen. The ribbon also integrates planters and a green wall, finished with lighting and an artificial lawn. Working with the designers, the contractor had to re-work the design considerably in order to meet the very lowlevel loading requirements. Access was also a major challenge. Unable to go through the building, and with surrounding narrow streets, the contractor had to use a mobile tower crane, leaving just 300mm of space between other buildings and glass balconies. Due to restrictions only one lift was permitted. Throughout the project, exceptional attention to detail was crucial. Construction brought further challenges, including installing a freestanding green wall without fixing it to the building structure, and laying a new drainage system for the artificial lawn. The contractor also undertook the lighting, irrigation and planting. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This was a challenging scheme logistically as no materials could be brought through the building and had to be craned onto the roof over one day. All aspects of the installation, including lighting, irrigation, green wall, artificial lawn and planting, have been expertly carried out with exceptional attention to detail.

The new M7 Building is one of two new office developments on the edge of the Westfield Shopping centre in Stratford, East London. Its high quality architectural design provides a premier workspace for organisations wishing to locate away from central London. The building is crowned with a screened roof garden, which enjoys outstanding views to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the London skyline beyond. Grandly titled Level 76 Roof Garden it is actually located on the 13th floor, its name deriving from its height above sea level. The scope of the contract included everything from the waterproofing layer, including insulation, drainage and reservoir layers; the laying of Chinese granite with a combination of finishes in an intricate linear pattern using a rail and pedestal system; bespoke planters in colours to match the building façade; benches and bird boxes, and planting. Due to construction restrictions, shallow soils depths have been used other than in the planters. A planting palette using prairie-style grass and ground cover species complements the paving and stepping stones in the shallow areas, which are set off with a gravel mulch finish. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Despite issues faced by the contractor throughout its construction and beyond their control, this deceptively simple yet stylish gravel garden on the 13th floor of the building, complete with bird boxes and naturalistic planting, has been built to a high standard, providing a pleasing area where those working in or visiting the building can relax.

The budget for the construction of this biodiverse green roof with photovoltaic panels was tight. The contractor gave their services to construct the roof free of charge and is providing three years of free green roof maintenance; the suppliers have provided the materials at cost and found funding for the PV panels. The green roof cools the area around the solar panels, which enables them to generate a higher energy yield. The hospice now has no electricity costs. This unique collaborative approach and utilisation of supply chain relationships has kept project costs low and the savings are directly benefitting the hospice and the children in its care.

Architect Horden Cherry Lee Designer/Maintenance Contractor Garden Club London Main Contractor McAleer & Rushe Suppliers Creepers Nursery, Domus, Europlanters
This 13-storey residential apartment building on Regent’s Canal in Paddington has an angular communal roof terrace providing impressive views back towards the city. Small, intimate areas with bench seating have been created using 800-1000mm high planters with lightweight fill. Matt finish planters, porcelain tiles, sapele bench seating and polished concrete table tops provide a sleek modern aesthetic. Dense mixed plantings and multi-stem Osmanthus add colour, softness add a sense of calm, with fixed exercise equipment and a lighting scheme providing further function and interest. The contractor successfully overcame the setting out challenges of an angular scheme and the late requirement to use non-combustible materials.

JILAYNE RICKARDS MBALI THE URBAN RETREAT - LONDON 2020
Main Contractor Landscaping Solutions Suppliers Ashwells Timber, Beth Chatto Gardens, CED Stone Group, Europlants UK, LivingSpace
Situated in a fast paced and stressful London environment, the clients wanted to create a quiet and restful haven in which to relax. The ethos of the garden was to creatively reuse and recycle as much as possible to reduce the carbon footprint of the build, whilst using original and unique items. This small urban plot is awkwardly triangular in shape with the garden narrowing at the end and although SW facing, it is predominantly shady with an occasional sunny spot; it has typical North London clay soil. Overlooked by neighbours, privacy was going to be a key issue. A seemingly simple design, the seating areas and arbour are connected by a curving slate path and form the strong structure that anchors the garden. The simplicity was hard to achieve in such a confined space. The many additional elements such as furniture, pots and ornaments were mainly sourced from markets, Ebay and reclaim yards. The immediate graceful impact of three silver birches provide the base for a restful purple, blue, light pink, white and green planting palette. Year round interest is gained from shrubs and bulbs, with seasonal interest from a variety of perennials coming and going throughout the year. JUDGES’ COMMENTS

The design for this beautiful garden is insightful, playful and magical with copious detail and interest. The blend of materials is first class, as is the planting, which attracts wildlife and provides yearround interest. It is a peaceful, calming and intimate space in a busy part of London, meeting every aspect of the client brief.

The client’s property, although contemporary, was constructed using traditional materials and with large feature windows. This style was to continue into the garden, which now boasts a relaxed, romantic feel and affords more privacy. A feature pergola doubles as a screen and mirrors the oak detailing on the property. The strong verticals of the structure, combined with the positioning of a water feature focal point, hold the attention within the garden. Paving materials work alongside an existing paved drive and the house brick and complement the interior flooring. Raised beds overcome impoverished soils and a subtle lighting scheme enhances the space at night.

LYNNE MARCUS MBALI PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN PETWORTH, WEST SUSSEX 2020
Main Contractor The Garden Builders
The owners wanted a garden that united the 17th century cottage with the stable block annexe and barn conversion, incorporated disparate hidden spaces, gave them a level games lawn, rationalised irrational levels, and enabled them to easily access the swimming pool. They also wanted a design based on linear geometry, to re-use existing Yorkstone where possible, feature largely low maintenance planting, and reveal a hidden view of the South Downs. The main axis from the house has now been twisted and a glorious view of the South Downs revealed. The garden descends in gentle stages to the pool whilst paths and steps unite buildings and all the garden spaces to create a circuitous journey with easy access throughout. Existing Yorkstone has been re-laid, supplemented with charcoal bricks to mark the directional change and as inset detail. Stone walling was redirected and extended to level up paths, terraces and the lawn. Low planting to the rear of the house avoids impinging on the view and the planting scheme throughout is thoughtful and encourages biodiversity. A simple metal rill wrapped in aromatic thymus and teucrium reflects the changing sky and quietly shows the way to the Downs. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This well-considered design has fully met the client brief, using both recycled and new materials and seamlessly dovetailing new elements of the garden with existing. The pointing in the paving and new stone walls matches and mirrors that of the existing cottage and the old garden. Plant selection is beautiful and entirely appropriate for the setting.

This formal garden is softened by romantic, billowy planting. A series of raised beds and off-set steps bring the garden up to the terrace, effortlessly transitioning through the levels. Two perfectly level lawns, edged with stone and bordered with yew hedging, terrace the garden down to the sunny back seating patio. The artist’s studio in one back corner balances the afternoon patio and water feature. Planting is colourful, scented and romantic while the lighting scheme adds drama. Artificial green walling brightens a dark basement staircase. The colour of the front garden borders goes from riotous pinks and reds in spring to soft whites and blues in late summer.

Located on the south side of the Yangtze River, Taicang City has a long history and culture as a riverside port spanning hundreds of years. It is from here that the Chinese adventurer Zhenghe departed for the west on seven occasions during the Ming dynasty. This community centre courtyard is located in the new area of Taicang. Its contemporary design of organic modernism integrates the spiritual characteristics of the area’s history and culture with its crisply shaped waterscapes – as many as six carved into the vertical change and route design. Waterfalls form patterns through height difference. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The design of this stunning community centre courtyard reflects aspects of local culture. Its series of waterfalls cascading into a sunken waterscape provide a wonderful immersive experience for residents. The construction of this very complex scheme has been executed to an exceptionally high standard and the planting is both beautiful and entirely appropriate.

Laoximen is an intricate old community within Changde City in Hunan province. Rich in history, this compact neighbourhood had nevertheless become a slum, its moat littered and laden with noxious sewage. A multi-disciplinary design team collaborated with the municipal administration to preserve and restore an extensive 10ha historic and cultural urban district, creating new social and economic vitality for a traditionally poor urban community. All of the original residents were rehoused onsite in modern new facilities whilst preserving and restoring the site’s physical history and culture. New waterfront commercial marketplaces, riverside walkways and public spaces were created to attract and serve the surrounding community.

The park features a well-established public realm system, comprising diverse public green spaces, a pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood, and slow traffic system. Thanks to the ecosolution for water storage and purification, the park can reuse the harvested rainwater for greening irrigation and replenishment of the water feature. An iconic windmill converts the wind power into motion energy and pumps up rainwater harvested in the wetland into the aqueduct, the starting point of the waterscape. The project thereby embodies the values and connotations of a ‘sponge’ city and by implementing a ‘sponge’ landscape system has created a stronger connection between the city and nature, enhancing the vitality of the community.

The grand waterscape is also designed to reflect the surrounding buildings, combining the virtual effect and reality and displaying the scale and grandeur of the scheme.

The design reflects the core concept of a spiral scroll and threedimensional garden. Based on the analysis of sightlines, the designers conceived the main landscape routes as two petals to embrace the building and ensure great visual effects when visitors look outside from inside the building. If the architecture resembles a scroll that is hard to see the panorama, the landscape serves as a guide to unfold the whole scroll, enabling visitors to appreciate the content. The building itself enjoys complex and rich colours and shapes whilst the landscape design draws on a simple and saturated hue to coordinate with the architectural style, utilising elegant lines to intensify the visual effects of the whole project.

TALBOT FARM LANDSCAPES PRINCE FAISAL BIN FAHD STADIUM, RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA 2020
Designer POWERgrass Main Contractor Talbot Farm Landscapes Suppliers POWERgrass, Saudi Gardens, Rutland Worldwide Freight
The contractor was invited by the Saudi Arabian sports minister to visit the country and review the condition of a selection of stadium pitches for quality and compatibility with current FIFA soccer pitch standards. They were subsequently awarded the contract to replace the pitch at the Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Stadium in Riyadh. The client’s brief was to assist with the improvement of sports surfaces in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, bringing them up to the standard required by FIFA for international matches, reflecting the increasing popularity of football in the Middle East. The contractor flew out their own specialist machinery to undertake the work to replace the existing reinforced rootzone system at the Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Stadium with an innovative and totally bespoke POWERgrass hybrid system that combines the advantages of natural grass with the resistance of synthetic turf. The top layer of c.100mm was removed down to the old reinforced carpet system and new sand, ameliorated with additives, integrated prior to installation of the hybrid grass system. The hybrid carpet was installed in rolls of 4 metres, stitched together and then filled with the rootzone and elastic layer up to 35mm. The surface was then seeded with Seashore Paspalum Pure Dynasty and dressed with mineral and organic fertilisers. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This was a hugely challenging and high profile project for the contractor. Drawing on their wide experience and carrying out extensive research, they were able to successfully navigate the cultural, logistical and climatic challenges posed by the contract and, in so doing, raise both their own and the UK landscape industry’s reputation at home and abroad.

SMART LANDSCAPE DESIGN PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN BRISTOL 2020
Architect/Designer/Main Contractor Smart Landscape Design Suppliers Adezz, Chew Valley Trees, Hartwell & Co Timber, Mandarin Stone, Taurus Fabrications
This lovely scheme is a delight to see and a credit to the designer/contractor whose attention to detail in the design and construction was faultless. The garden has been finished to an exceptionally high standard, evidenced in the detailing in the timber work and paving, and the sympathetic lighting. This is an impressive project from a new BALI member.

JILAYNE RICKARDS MBALI THE URBAN RETREAT - LONDON 2020
Main Contractor Landscaping Solutions Suppliers Ashwells Timber, Beth Chatto Gardens, CED Stone Group, Europlants UK, LivingSpace
This well-judged design has captured the essence of what the client wanted to achieve – a quiet and restful haven in which to relax. Trust between the designer, the clients and the contractor was key to the success of the scheme, the ethos of which was to creatively reuse and recycle as much as possible to reduce the carbon footprint of the build, whilst using original and unique items. This small urban plot is awkwardly triangular in shape with the garden narrowing at the end and although SW facing, it is predominantly shady with an occasional sunny spot; it has typical North London clay soil. The seemingly simple design connects the seating areas and arbour with a curving slate path, forming the strong structure that anchors the garden.

The contractor’s bold design, including elements such as the bespoke contemporary steel pergola, met all the client’s requirements to create an imposing setting for the stunning new property. The location of the site, on a narrow country lane, and the fact that the construction of the house was taking place concurrently with the landscaping, necessitated all landscaping materials for the rear garden to be craned over the house. Notwithstanding this and other not inconsequential logistical challenges, the contractor worked in a professional and orderly fashion on this large project, managing the safe storage of materials on site and the health and safety implications whilst ensuring high standards of construction and planting were achieved throughout. The design for this garden is entirely appropriate for the setting, reflecting the client brief and giving the imposing property a sense of place. Beautifully balanced, the design leads the eye across the formal lawn to the garden’s focal point sculpture and on to the fields beyond. The quality of the construction and the standard of workmanship throughout the scheme are exemplary.

The design ethos for this delightful small urban garden was to creatively reuse and recycle as much as possible in order to reduce the carbon footprint of the build and to use original and unique items. There was a lot of trust involved between the clients, the designer and the contractor, working with unseen and undefined products from reclamation yards and many items sourced between client and designer to achieve the overall look that the designer had set out to achieve. Recycled and reclaimed materials included decking boards and shelving, slate paving, slate roofing, existing bricks for the retaining wall, all furniture and accessories, and stained glass for the arbour. The result is playful and magical with great variety and interest. JUDGES’ COMMENTS

The level of detail in this garden is impossible to design in and its success is undoubtedly down to the designer’s vision and ability to use recycled and reclaimed materials in a sensitive, stylish and entirely appropriate way. The client testimony speaks volumes: “We were involved at every stage and are thrilled beyond measure with the outcome. We also feel enriched by our interactions with all members of this dedicated, multitalented team.”
