Each year, as the National Landscape Awards process begins anew, it is always exciting to see what new heights will be reached by our talented membership. How will our members approach the numerous challenges they face as they deliver their award-winning schemes? Working with the natural landscape and with nature’s ‘living’ materials is a challenge in itself; add to that the demands of clients, the prevailing economic and employment conditions, and the increasingly urgent challenges of climate change, and you need landscape professionals who are at the very top of their game.
The winners of the 2023 National Landscape Awards are those very landscape professionals, members of our Association whose endeavours reflect its stated values of demonstrating leadership, supporting endeavour, encouraging innovation, and celebrating excellence, to deliver schemes of outstanding and breathtaking quality. Each of the winners in this brochure, regardless of the category, has knowingly or intuitively embraced these values and, in doing so, raised the bar yet again and helped to improve the lives and wellbeing of their colleagues and employees, their clients, and those who are ultimately the beneficiaries of their work. This year’s Grand Award winner, Willerby Landscapes, is no stranger to its position as the ‘best of the best’, having won the Grand Award on an unprecedented six previous occasions. With this seventh accolade – for its delivery of the Battersea Power Station Phase 2 Roof Gardens – it must surely be the industry’s paragon of landscaping excellence, a company that fully embraces the Association’s values and lives by them. It is to the credit of all our Accredited Designers, Contractors, and Suppliers that they have continued to work through another year of rising costs without compromising on their standards. Many members continue to support the wider industry by volunteering as Ambassadors for the Go Landscape initiative to bring in new blood, and the Association is championing diversity and inclusivity within landscaping to ensure the industry reflects society in its entirety and has access to its wealth of talent.
INTRODUCTION
OUR MEMBERS’ ACHIEVEMENTS REFLECTING THE ASSOCIATION’S VALUES
the Awards judging panel met at Landscape House to discuss each of the shortlisted schemes before agreeing their final list of winners. We owe our judges a huge debt of gratitude for their commitment and dedication on behalf of the Association to what is an enormous task. Commenting on this year’s Awards, John Melmoe said: “The overall quality of the submission packs for this year’s Awards was probably the best we have seen to date. Consequently, two aspects of the site-based judging process came to the forefront: the importance of site inspections, and the wealth of experience of the judging panel. Together they enabled all submitted information to be fully questioned, interrogated, and substantiated. It was particularly encouraging to see smaller companies entering the arena this year and introducing some serious competition for the more established members! Consistency of approach, presentation, and meticulous execution create Award winners. The undeniable kudos associated with the National Landscape Awards gives due recognition to the diverse talent we have within the industry. I would like to congratulate this year’s winners – make sure you enjoy your success and have some fun, and start preparing for next year’s Awards!” In financially challenging times the financial support of our headline sponsor Green-tech and our other industry sponsors listed on page 5 of this brochure is invaluable and it would be impossible to stage an Awards ceremony on the scale of the National Landscape Awards without it. Their continued support, which allows us to come together year on year to celebrate our members’ success in style, is very greatly appreciated. Best wishes

The regeneration of this iconic Grade II* Listed building has opened up access across 13 levels of semi-public and private open space. In addition to landscaping roof top gardens, sunken courtyards, lightwells, walkways, roof terraces and balconies, the contractor has delivered the three communal gardens at Switch House East, Switch House West, and the Boiler House roof level. Logistically hugely challenging, and demanding scrupulous and relentless attention to detail, this scheme represents a future exemplar for the industry. See page 48 for full details.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The statistics on this incredibly impressive project illustrate both its complexity and the high levels of project management and technical and horticultural skill required to bring it to successful fruition. Every aspect of this scheme, from planning and design, site preparation, health and safety, and logistics, to the craftsmanship, horticultural expertise, and detailing, has been exemplary. Where problems are seen as opportunities to excel and perfection is the collective goal, it is little wonder that the industry has long been used to using this contractor’s achievements as a benchmark. It seems they have raised that benchmark once again.

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION - UNDER £30K
This pocket-sized courtyard is an elegant outdoor room for a unique regency townhouse in Brighton. A subtle coastal theme with a natural touch meets the client’s brief. The strong connection between indoors and outdoors has been achieved by raising the levels of the garden and extending the beautiful porcelain tiled floor from indoors to outdoors. The garden is a sociable space with wrap around ‘floating’ benches for dining, lounging and entertaining. The benches maximise the available floorspace with shade tolerant planting features underneath, which adds to the atmosphere. A raised flint planter emulates the original boundary walls, providing a backrest to the benches and elevating more naturalistic, sun-loving planting. A bespoke glass-fronted pond acts as an amazing focal point from the extension of the property whilst enabling the fish and water to be enjoyed from both the house and the garden. Bespoke hazel screening flows from within the house into and around the whole garden. The flowing shape is synonymous with the coastal flavour whilst overcoming the challenge of the differing heights of the boundary walls and screening the garden from neighbouring properties. A beautiful lighting scheme creates a captivating atmosphere in the evening.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
An incredible transformation has been achieved by this delightful scheme and its indoor/outdoor theme. Although simple it has been beautifully executed with good cutting of hard materials and even jointing. Materials have been sensitively selected throughout and used to excellent effect, including the split wattle fencing and knapped flint detailing. National Landscape Awards 2023

A contemporary design was chosen for the upgrade of this garden, tackling its awkward shape and complementing the renovated property. Featuring a combination of large format paving, Dutch clay pavers, and rich Thermo Ash decking and cladding, the garden showcases a modern aesthetic with seamless transitions between outdoor areas. The planting scheme adds beauty and texture, complementing the overall design. Key focal points include a centrepiece fireplace, providing warmth and ambience, and an elegant threespout water feature, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Additionally, carefully placed exterior lighting fixtures enhance the garden’s presence, providing both practical illumination and an enchanting atmosphere during the evening hours. This unique garden design harmoniously blends functionality and aesthetics, offering an inviting and tranquil space for relaxation and enjoyment.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This lovely scheme showcases the contractor’s high-quality skillset across many disciplines, with excellent paving and decking, precise cutting-in, and impressive joinery, which included the cladding of the property’s old garage to create a charming garden room. The garden beautifully complements the house and completes the property’s radical overhaul. National Landscape Awards 2023

DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION BETWEEN £30K - £60K GREEN ACORN LANDSCAPE DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION THE PURPLE FLORAL
Client Joanne Jacob Designer/Main Contractor Green Acorn Landscape Design & Construction Suppliers Cheshire Sandstone, Europlants (UK), Harding Stoneyard, MKM Warrington
The client brief was for this traditional country garden to be transformed into a modern family - and dog - friendly outdoor living space, usable year-round and in all weathers. The removal of a vast quantity of trees and overgrown shrubs revealed a significantly larger area. Naturally divided into two, the first half of the garden has been transformed into an entertaining area with seating, outdoor kitchen, and water feature, whilst the second half retains a more traditional vibe with an existing pergola, established wisteria, and new artificial lawn. The garden’s traditional and modern aspects are brought together when viewed through the steel rings in a natural stone wall.

The Japanese-influenced design for this new garden creates a lovely family entertaining and relaxation space. The view of the garden from the house is a special attraction, with an existing acer providing a focal point when viewed from the new extension. A paved seating area and adjacent water feature flanked by two multi-stem osmanthus provides a restful and calming space, screened from the adjacent property. Additional bench seating with fern planting below adds to the ambience. Towards the end of the garden large rocks placed around a fire pit create an informal seating and socialising area, which is particularly popular with the clients’ teenage children.

The challenging topography of the small garden of this new-build property required a radical approach by the contractor. Because the garden sloped steeply towards the house, a structural engineer was consulted before more than 250 tonnes of soil were excavated to create split levels. Two large blockwork retaining walls were constructed and hard landscaping materials used to good effect to create an impressive space. An artificial lawn and a limited planting palette have created the low-maintenance garden asked for by the client, and lighting ensures the space can be enjoyed into the evening.

The striking courtyard garden of this newly built property unites the unique contemporary architecture with the interior design. A ‘one level’ space offers different experiences for adults to enjoy - outdoor dining, entertaining, relaxing, sunbathing, and cooking – whilst a central water feature amplifies the courtyard feel and creates atmosphere. Hand drawn molten shapes cut into the extensive paving radiate from the water feature, and island planting beds soften the hard landscaping and brick detailing, which matches the house and adds visual interest. A gold vista line runs from the doors of the kitchen, through the courtyard, and vertically up an enticing bespoke pergola, which provides both shelter and heat for outdoor dining in all weathers. A bespoke cooking station adds to the social dynamics and has everything required to enjoy a day in the garden entertaining friends. Lounging areas are located south facing near the house with a fireplace for sitting out late into the evening. Planting in the sunnier areas is more naturalistic, whilst woodland style planting is a wonderful shady backdrop. Ilex hedging frames the whole courtyard. A further secret courtyard to the side of the house with a lusher, jungle-like feel, is a pleasant surprise.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This is a beautifully constructed scheme that demonstrates both the contractor’s high-quality workmanship and a laudable ‘can do’ approach to realising the client’s brief and expectations. Executed to perfection, this unusual garden strongly connects with the house, taking visual clues from the architecture and interior décor.

Following the conversion of an existing stable block into an entertainment space, gym and working office, the surrounding tarmac parking area has been landscaped to complement the new building layout. The existing garden was also re-designed and incorporated into the scheme to create a seamless whole. Whilst all initial excavations and blockwork were carried out by others, the contractor has designed and executed all aspects of this pleasing space with precision, using a range of hard materials that complement the age of the buildings and a palette of plants that is entirely appropriate to the garden’s Cotswold setting.

This small scheme with a Japanese theme has transformed the rear garden and an area to the side of the house, modernising and connecting the spaces with new shade-tolerant planting in walled beds and within gravel areas. There are now paved and decked seating areas, a lawn, and a new pool, which can be viewed from both inside the house and from the courtyard decking. Horizontal batten fence cladding with matching fence panel and opening screen the garden from the driveway and the white rendered walls are softened by the planting palette. A new lighting scheme enhances the existing and new planting and key features throughout the space.

The bold, architectural design of this London garden complements the newly refurbished Victorian home and meets the client brief to increase biodiversity and encourage pollinators. The initial feeling is of a refined contemporary adult space for entertaining friends and relaxing but look deeper and the garden is most definitely a space for the whole family to enjoy. The bold design and structure of the garden, formed by its steppingstones and water rill, start to take on a different, more playful feel as the children jump between the steppingstones. Whilst their different heights have been designed in for practical reasons it is this aspect that makes navigating them so much fun. The steel water rill is a contemporary feature designed to carry the eye and make the garden feel longer but is also a stream for racing homemade sailboats. The simple material choice allows the space to feel calm and the existing surrounding taxus hedging forms a great backdrop for the pollinator-friendly planting scheme. Together with the wildflower meadow and rough grass areas it has hugely increased the biodiversity of this city garden.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This impressive scheme is testament to the enormous amount of offsite planning required by the contractor. Quality workmanship has been employed to lay the faultless and beautifully aligned paving and to install the Corten steel water features and other design aspects fabricated off-site. The client brief was for a contemporary family garden, making use of each terrace that wraps around the perimeter of this hillside property to create an imposing entrance and areas with ambience for dining, relaxation, and play. From the resin driveway on the ground floor, to the cleverly positioned viewpoint on the second floor with its expansive views over the Cheshire plain towards Manchester, the design captures, enhances and highlights the existing elements of this character home and garden layout. A rather ordinary and uninspiring rear garden, laid to lawn with a few shrubs, has been transformed into a tranquil and tasteful scheme in keeping with this characterful South London property. The challenge was to create something striking, highlighting the attractive London Brickwork of the garden’s existing high walls, whilst maximising the use of the modest space. The result is wildlife friendly and incorporates a pond, wildflower meadows, stunning trees, and several places to sit and ponder. Sinuous circulation routes lead through the garden to reveal a variety of vistas and places from which to contemplate and admire the secluded outdoor space.

The garden of this detached period property runs down to a man-made waterway that gives access to the River Thames for boat-owning local residents. The bold garden design was implemented during the renovation of the house and construction of a large garden room at the water’s edge. All materials were either brought in through the house or craned over it. A floating stone staircase leads from the top terrace of the house down to a meandering path that passes amongst lovely features and beautifully planted borders, eventually reaching the garden room and mooring. This extensive scheme has transformed what was a largely blank canvas into a garden that gives the property a sense of place within the surrounding rural Somerset landscape. Somerset Hamstone has been used to construct dwarf walls in the main garden, and interesting hard landscape focal points throughout the design lead the eye through the soft landscaping to the fields beyond, successfully achieving a fine balance between the scheme’s formality adjacent to the house and its less formal feel towards the boundaries. The kitchen garden has been sensitively rejuvenated with self-binding gravel paths, fruit cage, cold frames and planting beds.

The clients wanted a front garden and entrance to their London home that would leave a lasting impression. The contractor designed and built a water rill and pond with steppingstones to the entrance door and reconfigured the front garden and driveway, using large Portuguese laurels and yew hedging to create both high-and low-level privacy from the street and neighbouring properties. The entrance’s impressive, beautifully installed water feature and hard elements have greatly improved the aesthetics and overall functionality of the space, whilst privacy has been enhanced by the new planting scheme.

This small, south facing courtyard garden of a new-build property now has the wow factor requested by the client. The challenge for the contractor was to creatively combine the client’s wish list of a spa pool, sauna, BBQ pavilion and seating areas within a relatively compact space and this required a considerable level of engineering expertise and forward planning. The garden’s sunny aspect is optimised, allowing the evening sun to warm the pavilion space, which creates shelter and privacy from the neighbouring property. Plumbing, filtration, heating, ventilation, sound and lighting services are all controlled by a smart app linked to the cleverly disguised plant room.

The large variations in levels and the complex nature of the design made this a very challenging and difficult build for the contractor, who worked very closely with the designer to achieve the outcome so loved by the client. With a 6-7m rise from the house up to the top of the garden, large amounts of Corten steel were used to create steps up to the lower and middle terraces with seating, and to the upper terrace with garden studio. This scheme includes both front and rear gardens of this property, with the rear garden providing a challenge because of a 5m drop from the house diagonally across the garden. The contractor, working closely with the builders, has created a multipurpose space with defined areas for different activities and a beautiful visual aesthetic. New levels have been created to provide an upper terrace adjacent to the property with breathtaking views and an outdoor kitchen and large planters; a natural lawn football pitch enclosed by a hardwood fence; and steps leading down to the main garden with its broad paths of sandstone and clay pavers running between the house and the planting on both sides.

PRINCIPAL AWARD WINNER
DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION OVER £250K
Although a modest pond already existed in the 5-acre grounds of this imposing property, the feature was too small and out of scale. It has now been replaced with a dramatic 250m² wildlife pond, created using a liner that weighed a tonne and boasting a boardwalk leading to a cantilevered deck. Deep marginal shelves are generously planted, and 84 tonnes of Caledonian boulders have been incorporated within and around the feature. Grass paths around the pond open a variety of vistas as it seamlessly nestles adjacent to the edge of an established mixed native woodland. The pond is lit discretely at night, and gentle bubblers not only oxygenate the water but also provide a sense of movement and a relaxing ambiance. Following construction of the pond, wildlife, including ducks, frogs, and other aquatic species, rapidly colonised it. Swallows now swoop down to gather water to make their mud nests nearby, and deer, foxes and badgers also make good use of their own personal exquisite water hole. The pond now sits perfectly within the wider landscape and is much loved by the clients and their spaniel, Pip.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The extension of this pond has been achieved with imagination, skill and expertise. It sits beautifully within the grounds and surrounding landscape, giving scale to the house and providing the clients with a beautiful outlook from their property. Constructed with care and precision, it will give pleasure for years to come. National Landscape Awards 2023

A tired and featureless landscape around an existing farmhouse has been re-designed and elevated using high quality hard and soft landscape materials, including complementary paving types using reclaimed paving to match existing. The design features deep drainage, bespoke timber joinery, traditional craft-built stone walls, bespoke metal automated gates, railings and handrails, and a tennis court area sympathetically sunk into the landscape using structural retaining walls clad in more local stone. An irrigation system utilising two 20,000L rainwater harvesting tanks was also installed. Specimen and herbaceous planting and an orchard with lawns and wildflower meadows have been achieved by making use of the 5,500m³ of site-won subsoil and topsoil.

This garden evokes a feeling of tranquillity and opulence. Consideration has also been given to encouraging sustainability where possible. Water butts and compost bins and have been discretely placed to allow for water storage and composting of organic matter. A resin driveway ensures compliance with SuDS regulations, and Purbeck walling is not only a backdrop for the planting scheme but a home for insects.

The client wanted a garden for their large, newly built property in the Cheshire countryside that would complement its style and proportions and optimise its setting. A hard landscape terrace surrounding the property, with planted beds and pleached trees, provides a more formal feel for the entertaining and outdoor dining areas. Planting is supported with a fully automatic irrigation system, and a stylish stone orb water feature adds to the ambience of the scheme. Views out across extensive lawns lead to wildflower planting at the perimeter of the garden, which in turn blends into the surrounding rural landscape. The scheme included the landscaping of a courtyard shared by neighbouring properties.

They also wanted their front and rear garden transformed into an ‘adult’, naturalistic space for relaxation and entertaining, complete with a gym and ceramics studio. Caledonian Kirkstone paving and timber decking has been effectively used throughout the garden scheme and areas of soft, vibrant planting create a lovely informal space. There is naturalistic pond, pathways to wander along, and spots for the clients’ African sculpture collection. This lovely country home sits within an extensive garden space on an exposed site. Originally laid largely to lawns, with an uninspiring rear terrace adjacent to the house and an all too prominent tennis court, the garden is now a magical space that embraces the property and provides a wealth of textures, colours and vistas. The original rear terrace has been completely re-worked and the paving stones repurposed to create a variety of natural spaces. Large exuberant borders packed with lush vegetation and vibrant colours provide year-round interest and colour. The entertaining area is surrounded by planting beds, with trees adding height, structure and shade. The eye is drawn away from the tennis court by the inspired placement of a wooden arbour and beautiful planting. Designed with an eye for detail and a passion for plants, the garden provides a unique, sensory experience. From quiet nooks filled with flowers waving in the breeze to beautiful trees and sprawling lawns, this enchanted escape invites visitors to revel in its charm. Working with the garden’s sandy soil, ornamental grasses that flourish in exposed areas have been chosen along with mounding plants spilling into gaps between sections.

SOFT LANDSCAPING CONSTRUCTION (NON-DOMESTIC) - UNDER £500K
This Historic England, Grade II Listed, park and garden opposite the Palace of Westminster UNESCO World Heritage Site is well used throughout the year, providing a quiet space to rest for the thousands of international tourists visiting the area every week and is a regular gathering space for citizens exercising their democratic right to peaceful protest close to where our laws are made. The hot weather in the summer of 2022, the resulting hosepipe ban, and continued regular heavy footfall of some 1,500 people per hour, saw the central lawn of Parliament Square Garden struggle to recover in the autumn of that year. Significant works were required to restore the lawn and planting beds in advance of the upcoming Coronation. An area of 2,700m² was first decompacted and the top layer of organic matter removed, an irrigation system installed to evenly water the lawn area during establishment, 100% organic fertilizer incorporated into the fine tilth topsoil, and thick cut, heavy footfall turf laid. Flower beds across the area and adjacent to the many statues were replanted. All works had to meet high environmental standards required for Central London in terms of noise and emissions and were carried out in a highly security-sensitive area.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This was a huge logistical challenge for the contractor, whose team worked mainly at night and managed deliveries and operations without impacting the normal flow of traffic or public access. The planting of a number of large mature trees, including a 22m high metasequoia, provided major logistical challenges for the contractor.

An innovative logistics plan was implemented for c. 1,200 lorry movements whilst the Tower remained open to the public. This enclosed podium courtyard of the converted Grade II Listed Edwardian Westminster Fire Station was once a turning circle for the fire trucks and an exercise yard for the firemen. Nestled between the historic architecture of the old Fire Station and the contemporary architecture of the new Station House building, this courtyard is now an intimate space in which residents can relax in the outdoors. Created to provide a sense of privacy and calm away from the hustle and bustle of life in the city, it is now an intensively used space that seamlessly marries elements of the historic building with its modern counterpart. Curved Corten steel planters flow through the space with their accompanying seating, colour coordinated statement boulders continue the rounded feel, and a central water feature creates a calming ambience. Plant-covered privacy screens add to the intimacy. The paving choice reflects the colour of the brickwork of the old and new buildings. COMMUNITY & SCHOOLS DEVELOPMENT
Owned and managed by the Parish Council, this small pocket park tucked away in the centre of the village was overgrown and largely derelict with an old hut on the site becoming a magnet for anti-social behaviour. Funding was secured by the Parish Council from various sources, including the Lottery Fund, for the one-acre site’s extensive renovation and improvement, creating a muchneeded community friendly space. The area was predominately rough grass and was being used as a makeshift football field. Trees and vegetation were cut back, and the old play equipment and safety surfacing removed. The regenerated site now includes a substantial play area with equipment for all ages, safety surfacing, an outdoor gym, zip wire, vehicular and pedestrian paving, extensive mound formations and soft landscaping elements, including native planting, trees and grass/ wildflower seeding. Bird and bat boxes have been installed, there is an Eco Trail with info boards, and totem poles decorated with designs inspired by wildlife and countryside photographs taken by members of the community. The ‘safe space’ entrance ensures parents can keep their young children away from the road and their buggies and bicycles can be secured. Bowtop boundary fencing and street furniture items complete the space.

LANDFORM CONSULTANTS HALE CEMETERY
Client Farnham Town Council Designer Graduate Landscapes Main Contractor Landform Consultants
This imaginative project has seen the almost total demolition of two derelict burial chapels in Hale Cemetery to create a contemplative community space, maintaining the footprint of the chapels and their historical context whilst ensuring the concerns of those with links to the cemetery were acknowledged and addressed. Before the site’s regeneration the chapels had become a focus for antisocial behaviour. The total demolition and removal of the chapels was too costly to undertake and so, in cooperation with Farnham Borough Council and with only an indicative concept plan from which to work, the contractor devised the layout based on the chapels’ footprint and selected reclaimed materials from the original buildings for their partial reconstruction. Materials not re-used in the project were removed and repurposed in other landscape schemes, including a show garden at the Chelsea Flower Show. Lovely planting softens the scheme and with lighting at night the garden is a new and enchanting focal point within the cemetery.

The regeneration of the Grade II* Listed Battersea Power Station has embraced the opportunity to open up access across 13 levels of semi-public and private open space in this iconic building. The project has provided the contractor with the opportunity to undertake one of the most challenging and rewarding hard and soft landscaping schemes in their history. From pre-construction in winter 2019, through the construction phase and into post completion maintenance, they have delivered the regeneration vision for the site across roof top gardens, sunken courtyards, lightwells, walkways, roof terraces and balconies. The three communal gardens at Switch House East, West, and the Boiler House roof level, have been constructed through the installation of void formers, foundations and footings, the introduction of bespoke planters and edges, and the placement of soils, creating an environment that supports the successful soft landscape, which includes some 110 semi-mature trees and over 16,700 plants. The gardens are characterised by an extensive palette of bespoke metalwork, from benches, bins and handrails, through to raised platforms, pergola structures, vent cladding, and curved privacy screens. The statistics on this project illustrate both its complexity and the high standard of project management and technical and horticultural skill required to bring it to successful fruition. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Delivery of such a high-profile, iconic landscaping project as this requires outstanding levels of expertise and quality control from the contractor. Every aspect of this scheme, from planning and design, site preparation, health and safety, and logistics, to the craftsmanship, horticultural expertise, and detailing, is an exemplar, raising the benchmark to which the industry should aspire.

Awareness of the historic design had been lost amongst overgrown shrub beds, the mature trees were in poor condition, and the ornamental pools had become full of silt and debris. Lottery funding has now regenerated the landscape and increased its use by the public. The contractor has successfully restored the park’s existing ponds, extended the network of footpaths and boardwalks, upgraded and restored primary visitor entrances, created additional parking, installed bespoke sculptures and artwork, provided children’s play features and nature trail signage, and carried out extensive soft landscaping.

Sighthill is one of the largest urban regeneration projects of its kind outside of London. Once home to chemical works, rail facilities, brick works and engineering works, the area is providing new houses and flats, a new school campus, and an iconic pedestrian bridge to improve access across the M8 to the nearby city centre. The contractor screened and remediated 25,000m3 of site-won topsoil on this brownfield site before importing a further 10,000m3 of topsoil. The soft landscaping works consisted of the supply and planting of 3,800 semi mature specimen trees, 101,000 shrubs, 6,000 specimen hedges and 685,000 flowering bulbs, creating a great public amenity space with good accessibility. © CHRISTOPHER SWAN PHOTOGRAPHY

This exposed 7th floor roof terrace presented an awkward shape and the added difficulty of no lift or crane to transport materials. The client wanted a chic and functional entertaining space, offering privacy and protection from the elements and using existing furniture, mirrors and selected plants where possible. Inspiration came from the client’s bold art collection. Two sculptural junipers link interior to exterior artwork, with a colour palette based on the prominent rusty-toned chimney stacks. Statement pots house eight evergreen trees that divide the terrace into three zones - dining, entertaining, and relaxation. Trellised climbers offer privacy and disguise the walkway’s vertiginous drop. Planting is loosely evocative of an American prairie, as a nod to the client’s origins. Finally, cleverly considered lighting adds drama for late night entertaining, with a firepit and discreet heaters for comfort. To reduce resource use and to comply with the designer’s and contractor’s sustainability ethos, existing planters, mirrors, furniture, and a BBQ were re-used or upcycled, local suppliers were sourced where possible, and permission to use existing scaffolding and hoist in place for works three floors below was sought. Before construction of the terrace design could begin, however, the designer was unexpectedly charged with overseeing exterior works relating to the fabric of the building that required urgent completion.

The new office is the showcase of the business’s European presence and so the interior landscaping had to be special. The client’s brief was simply: not corporate and not boring! A hydroponic interior scheme was designed and installed by the contractor’s twoperson team over six days and outside of office hours to minimise impact. From planters on the tops of lockers, planted space dividers, and planting in the reception and kitchen areas, to single specimens and individual succulents at workstations, the plant selection and placement was left to the installation team, whose efforts have resulted in a delighted client and very happy employees.

ABRDN - 1 GEORGE STREET
Client ISS Main Contractor GP Plantscape Suppliers Koberg The investment company Abrdn refurbished their head office at 1 George Square, Edinburgh, in 2021. The contractor installed 178 interior plant displays over six floors as part of the refurbishment and now provides interior landscape maintenance through the facilities management company. The role of the interior planting scheme is to create a high-quality corporate environment for its head office building where high net worth clients are welcomed and staff can enjoy a pleasant working environment with an emphasis on wellbeing. The interior plant display maintenance can be grouped into three distinct areas: Zen Garden, Mediterranean area, and open plan office space. The Zen Garden area is also used by the Chief Executive for social media filming and pictures. The technicians demonstrate their horticultural expertise in this zone, keeping the plants healthy and vibrant where light levels are borderline for the chosen plants, selected for their oriental likeness. In the Mediterranean area the cold Scottish weather has provided the maintenance team with challenges, particularly with the plants at the main entrance. They have nevertheless overcome them, as they have in the office areas, where staff closing blinds, proximity to radiators, and planters being moved have all tested the technicians’ knowledge and skill.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This impressive and varied scheme is testament to the skill of the contractor’s plant technicians. All living plants are thriving and healthy, despite the numerous challenges posed by the building’s environment and light levels. The plants’ condition and placement, and the maintenance of the faux planting, all contribute to a pleasing working environment.

This 23-hectare park in Harrow contains various listed structures and buildings. Headstone Manor is a nationally significant Scheduled Monument, home to four historic listed buildings and a 14th-century moat. It is thought that one of the barns dates back to the medieval period. The project to refurbish the park seeks to promote public awareness, access and participation; enhance biodiversity and ecological connectivity; enhance flood resilience in areas at risk; and improve water quality and landscape within the catchment area. The contractor’s work within Headstone Park included the development of settlement ponds and wetlands to control pollution entering the moat and river system, improvements to Yeading Brook, which runs through the park, and creation of flood alleviation schemes. 13,000m³ of silt brought into the moat by the river was removed, concrete culverts re-opened, an orchard with heritage apple trees planted, and an events area created. Boards showing resident wildlife species and presenting other sitespecific educational information have also been erected throughout the park.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This highly successful and well executed landscape project has doubled the footfall in the park to half a million and transformed a run-down area into a popular outdoor space for the local community. Water quality in the catchment will be improved and flood risk reduced, and the local wildlife – which is being comprehensively monitored – will undoubtedly flourish. National Landscape Awards 2023

Architect Elaine Rutherford MBALI Main Contractor The ProLandscapers Suppliers Landscapeplus, London Stone, Viridis Plants A contextually sensitive design has been realised for the front and rear gardens of this new-build detached house in a former Victorian walled garden. The clients were keen to retain the original boundary walling and develop the empty plot in character with the heritage of the site. The new layout provides areas to relax, entertain and circulate comfortably. A raised bed and L-shaped pond in matching brickwork and riven sandstone, with attractive planting, screening and subtle lighting, are arranged to ensure the garden is attractive from all angles, all year round, as viewed from inside and out. It has a balance of hard and soft features and is easy to care for. The design cleverly incorporates a tree protection zone and has re-purposed some materials from the building’s construction. The use of Indian sandstone throughout the courtyard space enhances the warmth of the existing boundary walls to create a delightful and calming space.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The spatial arrangement of this scheme is very effective and provides multiple points of interest whilst offering the client privacy and the right level of maintenance. Good decision making regarding an existing tree to the front of the property reflects the designer’s knowledge and ability to find appropriate design solutions.

A contemporary, naturalistic parterre based on offset rectangles anchors the rear garden to the continuous glass doors of this modern house. A linear design links the layout to the architecture of the house and optimises space. Dog-leg paths create interest and divert the eye to maximise space and create a circuitous route and views within the garden as well as opening cross views throughout. A new gym is integrated and ‘sunken’ into the layout, and a large natural pond creates a focal feature. Scottish schist terraces and steps, Kebony decked veranda and boardwalk, and flint aggregate with gunmetal metal work complement the house. Multi-stem osmanthus, cercis, cornus, prunus and acers provide three-dimensional interest. L-shaped tapestry lawns of pratia, bellis perennis and leptenella contrast with lush woodland planting to the rear and grasses with perennials in rich oranges, burgundies and purples. Linear geometry around the side of the house incorporates a new ceramics studio and then gives way to a gently curving hoggin path around the house and new glass walled study, through verdant tree ferns, phormiums and fern and shady planting round to the front of the house and a driveway of basalt and resin bound aggregate.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This is a lovely scheme that has cleverly incorporated garden buildings required by the client and fully complements the style of the house. Located in the commercial district of Zhengzhou, Henan Province, this podium park of 32,137m² aims to empower the lives of those living in nearby apartments through landscape design, integrating culture and life. The design is based on an ancient Chinese painting and captures the elegance and beauty depicted in poetry and literature to create a Zen-like living space. The design incorporates cultural elements such as the Orchid Pavilion and winding river, using minimalist techniques to reinterpret traditional culture and to create an Eastern ambience. Multidisciplinary collaboration was key to the success of this complex scheme where the load-bearing capacity of the podium governed material and plant selection. Rainwater is stored and re-used through the rainwater gardens; a naturalistic planting style conserves water and reduces maintenance. Architectural specimen trees provide focal points and shade. Sensory planting creates a multi-dimensional experience in this healing space. The hard landscaped elements create spaces with different cultural connotations – ceremonial, themed, and leisure. An art garden in the park is created through the integration of multiple dimensions of time and space, using landscape as a medium to connect the memories of people, cities, and nature. By giving the space cultural attributes, it enriches the content of community life and creates an immersive and elegant Eastern living experience.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This beautiful scheme has been designed with enormous consideration and respect for the culture and traditions of this region of China. THE GARDEN DESIGN COMPANY PIP’S WILDLIFE POND
Designer Jo Alderson Design Main Contractor The Garden Design Company Suppliers Bourne Amenity, Country Supplies, Manchester Deck Company
SPECIAL AWARD WINNER
BEST NEWCOMER TO BALI

BEST FIRST TIME ENTRANT
Nestled in secluded ancient woodland at the end of a dirt track and overlooking the water, this beautiful riverside home now has an expertly installed driveway approach, terraces and garden that sit effortlessly within the surrounding landscape. The home’s location provided plenty of logistical challenges for the landscape team who worked intelligently to overcome them. Wooden gates to the property open onto the driveway and on to a stone sett and grass grid apron with adjacent natural stone walls and bespoke railings that affords parking and access to the bespoke wooden kayak shed. Natural stone banding and Corten steel borders contrast with the green banks as the tarmac driveway sweeps up to the main house where it splays to a full stone sett driveway bordered by extensively planted beds, limestone walkways and clay brick paviour pathways leading around the house and gardens.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
With plenty of first time Award entrants from which to choose, this company was singled out because of the expertise demonstrated by its very young team of landscapers. Run by a 25-year-old and with the entire team under 30, the quality of this extremely well executed project belies the relative tender ages of those responsible for its realisation. BEST DESIGN & BUILD
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This garden project balances both sustainability and beauty, repurposing existing paving stones to create a variety of natural spaces and using quality plant material to enhance a strong design. It has been executed to perfection with high quality workmanship, good ground preparation, and an intuitive eye for the perfect vista. National Landscape Awards 2023

STEVE WARREN-BROWN OF YGS LANDSCAPES MY WACKY FOREST
After being inspired by the work of botanist and professor Dr Akira Miyawaki who devised the Miyawaki Plantation Method, bringing nature and wildlife into the lives of primary school children is the mission of Steve Warren-Brown, owner of long-standing Accredited contractor YGS Landscapes. Supported by the team at YGS Landscapes and beyond and using his own funds to bring his concept to reality in his hometown of Plymouth, Steve has developed My Wacky Forest – a pilot project to establish the first urban micro forest in a school environment. Children at Mount Wise Community School in the City are now using their very own urban micro forest to learn more about trees, the flora and fauna that rely on them, and their irreplaceable role in nature. Steve has written a number of beautifully illustrated story books about My Wacky Forest, with characters such as Super Mushi the mushroom helping to entertain, inform and educate young children and support teaching staff; more books are planned. He hopes the Mount Wise project will be the first urban micro forest of many and that other schools will sign up to My Wacky Forest and have a small area of their grounds planted with saplings and transformed into an outdoor learning space.

It is hoped this brilliant concept gains the traction it deserves in Plymouth and more widely. Steve Warren-Brown is a passionate advocate of nature and the environment and believes that engaging with children at a young age in a fun way to teach them to love and respect our fragile eco-system will deliver the environmentalists of the future.
