About the BALI National Landscape Awards Photo: BALI National Landscape Awards 2018 JW Marriott Grosvenor House - The Great Room
Winning a BALI National Landscape Award promises to change the way you and your business are perceived, such is the kudos and respect these industry awards command.
A feature of the landscape industry’s calendar, no other Awards scheme for designers and contractors demands the level of professional excellence expected by the BALI Awards judging panel of acclaimed industry experts. Every construction and design project is visited personally by an adjudicator, and scrutinised individually. If that’s not enough, the adjudicators jointly deliberate each decision to ensure consensus that the winners really do represent the very best in landscape construction and design. Acknowledging and rewarding professional excellence are the key objectives of the BALI National Landscape Awards. The BALI National Landscape Awards are open to all BALI Registered members.

What criteria do the BALI adjudicators consider? Photo: Domestic Garden Construction Between £100k - £250k Tony Benger Landscaping 2018 Award Winner St Michael’s Mount
The expert adjudication panel, whose joint industry experience totals some 200+ years, have firm criteria against which to judge the schemes that are submitted each year. Size doesn’t matter, as far as the BALI National Landscape Awards are concerned. There are categories appropriate to all scheme sizes/values and the same criteria apply, whether it is a small domestic garden or a large public landscaped space. The effect of winning an award is the same – the admiration of your peers, a motivational boost for you and your staff, and a priceless marketing tool, whether you work in the private, commercial or public sectors.
The judging criteria considers; • • • • • •
Page 6
Interpretation of the client/designer’s brief Complexity of the project Quality of workmanship Choice and use of materials Success in overcoming major challenges Client satisfaction
• • • •
Thoughtful use of innovation or technology Environmental impact Strong design and implementation Presentation and information of scheme when submitted

What our winners say about winning a BALI National Landscape Award Dan Riddleston
Managing Director - Bowles & Wyer
“
For us winning a BALI National Award (and in particular the 2018 Grand Award) helps to increase our company’s profile and awareness amongst those people wishing to work with us. It is an opportunity to showcase our skills to a wider audience and keep our name prominent within the industry. Awards are not won without an awful lot of hard work by our teams, the suppliers and designers, so it is also nice for them to get recognition of this.
”
Peter Cunliffe
Company Director - Northumbrian Landscaping
“
Ever since we won our first award in 2009, every aspect of our business has improved. We have gained elevated respect and status from suppliers, industry and press, which has resulted in us tripling our turnover without any noticeable increase in effort. This has allowed us to employ staff to help with administration, which facilitates staff training and running a more professional outfit. As a result of our award success we now operate with a 12 month waiting list enabling us to pick and choose the projects with which we work. We are also frequently asked to contribute to industry and local publications, which has been both humbling and a testimony to how far we have come since our first entry back in 2009.

What the judging panel view as an award winning scheme
The adjudicators look for a high standard of workmanship, the use of quality materials, overall professional presentation and quality of the submission within each scheme. Whilst judging a portfolio or visiting a scheme they look for attention to detail in design, construction, planting and maintenance where applicable. Whilst a strong design may help first impressions, an innovative approach or unusual solution to overcoming a problem is highly valued. After careful consideration, Principal Award winners are selected from BALI Award-winning entries within each category. The adjudicators look for schemes which demonstrate an exceptional level of craft skills, often where the contractor has responded proactively to unexpected site problems or client demands. Such schemes will have exceptional client satisfaction and often present contractors/designers with a high degree of difficulty, yet still have been executed to a high level of quality. These schemes are commonly considered by the adjudicators to have the 'wow factor' in their overall visual impact. A Principal winner from a UK National scheme that is deemed to be ‘perfect in its realisation’, utilising the very highest quality workmanship with clean finish, creative/sustainable use of materials/recycling and demonstrates excellence in project management, could result in the prestigious Grand Award.

What do our adjudicators say about your award winning schemes
Bowles & Wyer
Private Residence in The Chilterns - BALI Grand Award Winner 2018
“
This total reconstruction of a high value private garden has been superbly executed with attention to detail dominant in every element of the landscape works. From the initial major earthworks and installation of attenuation drainage, to the high quality paving and walling used to create the new levels and terraces, the contractor has demonstrated the highest quality workmanship. The stunning planting schemes throughout a series of garden ‘rooms’, which include sculptures and water features, have also benefitted from the expert horticultural hands of the contractor. The realisation of the design of this beautiful private garden is a credit to the contractor, who is a worthy recipient of the 2018 BALI Grand Award.
”
Leicestershire Garden Design Company
Employer Excellence - Turnover under £2.5m - Principal Award Winner 2018
“
This submission was uplifting and refreshing in equal measure. It is clear from the staff and client testimonies that this is obviously a caring company that exists not only to serve its customers to the very best of its ability but also to bring young people into the industry, nurture them, give them excellent skills and personal confidence, and support them to be the very best they can be throughout their landscaping career. Leicestershire Garden Design Company deserves this Principal Award for showing very clearly that strong leadership and a caring and nurturing work environment brings rewards for everyone.
