FULFILLING OUR FOUNDERS’ VISION
At this year’s Awards ceremony we have come together, once again, to celebrate the professional achievements of our members. But in 2022 we have also celebrated the Association’s 50th anniversary and the vision of our founding members in establishing what is unquestionably the UK’s leading trade body for the landscape industry. Without their foresight and determination to bring together like-minded business owners and individuals who wanted to raise standards and the industry’s profile, there would be no Association, and no National Landscape Awards.
It was fitting, therefore, that Jeffrey Bernhard OBE, our first National Chairman and the man who took on the challenge of establishing the Association, received the first ever British Association of Landscape Industries’ Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s ceremony.
2022 has been a tumultuous year, not least with the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, a constant in all our lives and throughout the Association’s existence. His Majesty King Charles III has long been a champion for the environment, and we can only hope that his lifetime of positive action and speaking up for nature and the landscape has some influence on policy makers going forward as they grapple with the challenges of maintaining energy and food supplies whilst remaining committed to mitigating climate change with a deliverable green agenda.
Our industry can be proud of its determination to find better ways of operating to limit the impact on the environment and make a positive contribution to sustainability. This year’s Grand Award winner, Maylim, is one such example. Seeking to make its Exchange Square scheme as sustainable as possible and to limit the impact of demolition operations on the immediate area, the company looked at what could be ‘deconstructed’ and the resulting materials used elsewhere, rather than taking the traditional route of demolishing the existing hardscape prior to construction. This fresh approach resulted in reduced noise, dust, and vehicle movements, and, importantly, the re-use of viable hard materials on schemes elsewhere. With the change in society’s shopping patterns and the resultant closing of large retail and commercial centres across the UK, surely deconstruction and re-use must be the sustainable way forward when they are re-developed?
Our Accredited Designers, Contractors, and Suppliers have experienced another tough operational year, with unpredictable material prices and shipping costs, inflationary pressures, and a dearth of trained staff. But seeing this year’s award-winning schemes you could be forgiven for thinking that everything in the garden is rosy. Our incredible members, despite the challenges, have continued to deliver outstanding examples of landscaping excellence that have exceeded client expectations, improved lives, and done much to increase biodiversity.
Leading by example is what our Association members do best, and this year’s Award-winning schemes have, yet again, re-set the benchmark for the rest of the industry.
Every one of the UK schemes for this year’s Awards was visited personally by one of our dedicated Awards judges and each of the many, very detailed, International entries was reviewed by the Chair of the Judging Panel, John Melmoe, in addition to his own judging responsibilities. Over three days at the end of August, the Judging Panel met at Landscape House to discuss each of the entries before agreeing their final list of winners. We owe our judges a huge debt of gratitude for their commitment and dedication on behalf of the Association to what is an enormous task.
Commenting on this year’s Awards, John Melmoe said: “A National Landscape Award has retained its status as the landscape industry’s premier accolade because our judging panel is uncompromising in its determination to only reward excellence. The schemes entered by Association members undergo the most stringent scrutiny. Consequently, for those members whose entries are not recognised with an award there is often a sense of bewilderment accompanying the understandable disappointment. The high standards expected of every Association member in their day-today work are not what the judging panel is recognising with a National Landscape Award. We are looking for the schemes that represent the pinnacle of landscaping design, construction, or maintenance excellence, where members have exceeded those already very high industry standards. I am delighted to say that our 2022 winners have impressed and delighted us.”
Finally, it would be impossible to stage an awards ceremony on the scale of the National Landscape Awards without the financial support of our headline sponsor Green-tech and our other industry sponsors listed on page 83 of this brochure. We thank them all for their continued support, which allows us to come together year on year to celebrate our members’ success in style.
Best wishes

Located at the heart of Broadgate, London’s largest pedestrianised neighbourhood, Exchange Square is a new public park, which has been re-imagined as a bucolic landscape with trees, generously planted borders, and green space. Suspended above the tracks of Liverpool Street Station the landscape unfolds across several levels to create a more natural topography for the site. An immensely complex engineering and landscaping project, it has been delivered by the contractor to the very highest standards of professional excellence. See page 34 for full details.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This scheme is not only an exemplar of public realm landscaping excellence, fully deserving of the Grand Award, but also a lesson in finding and pursuing alternative solutions to the challenges faced by contractors who are replacing existing hard landscapes. Rather than simply demolish the existing scheme, the contractor chose to ‘deconstruct’ it, dismantling and removing the hard materials, including 300 tonnes of granite and 20 tonnes of boulders, and re-purposing them on other public realm projects. This approach has reduced the environmental impact and financial costs of the new scheme and must surely be the sustainable way forward for future public realm projects.

The client, who recently moved to live in the flat above his business, wanted to create a green space that would encourage wildlife into what was a bleak, uninviting area. The garden had to be practical, enabling staff to move freely through it from the par ing area to the o ce, as well as providing a private space for the client to use in the evenings. The overall style of the new garden is naturalistic, achieved by woodland-esque planting that works well with the demands of the shaded environment. A path of dressed setts leads through the space and along to a staircase up to a me anine seating area at the rear of the o ce building illboard dec ing crosses over a wildlife pool with a trickling spring and rock outcrops, and leads to a further, secluded seating area beneath the me anine he garden has become a small urban oasis for private use in the centre of heltenham, creating not only the inviting and wildlife-friendly space that the client was looking for but also a much-improved wor ing environment for his staff
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The contractor has done an exceptional job with this project, achieving exactly what the client required. The cutting and dressing of the setts shows an immense amount of care and attention to detail, which is also in evidence in the construction of the pond, the placement of the large rocks, and the plant selection.

The garden of this 1930s property is north facing and rises steeply from the rear of the house. The clients wanted a lowmaintenance design that would work with the aspect and terrain and be suitable for their two dogs. The contractor has created a garden across three tiers, reached by a combination of porcelain and resin-bound gravel steps. There is a lower patio with an outdoor cooking area, a middle tier with hardwood decking, and a private upper seating area flanked by pleached trees. The design incorporates contemporary hard materials, including render and resin-bound gravel and Corten steel, which are softened by low maintenance, layered planting. A bespoke water feature and outdoor kitchen complete the scheme.

PRIVATE GARDEN IN PAINSWICK
The client brief was to make more use of the space to the rear of this beautiful old Cotswold property. The area was dominated by an unused and rather tired looking swimming pool and presented a host of odd levels with little usable space. As the space flows out from the kitchen and is readily seen from numerous positions within the property, an attractive design that fitted the vernacular of the building was required. The pool was infilled with arisings from the surrounding works and a block and beam construction placed above it prior to the laying of reclaimed Yorkstone. The existing free-standing wall was retained and ‘anchored’ to the scheme by the addition of new walls created with reclaimed Cotswold stone to ensure they blended in. The planting scheme, when fully established, will bring softness and structure to the area.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Great care has been taken to source the ideal materials for this delightful transformation and the transition between existing and new is seamless. The craftsmanship demonstrated across the range of hard landscaping elements is exemplary and the design is entirely in keeping with the age and style of the property.

This large project proved challenging for the contractor, who built both the front garden and driveway and the extensive rear garden whilst the house was being constructed. The front garden presented difficult levels with a 1.5m crossfall. Attractive clay pavers border the extensive well-stocked flowerbeds, and stabilised gravel forms the driveway. The rear garden incorporates a sunken cricket bowling net; a circular area of decking beneath a Quercus ilex; large format porcelain paving, steps, and coping; a wildflower meadow; slatted fencing; and a bespoke oak swing. The completed house is embraced by this lovely, well executed, scheme.

A stream, reminiscent of a Scottish burn, has been constructed through the garden, and a vegetable garden created with cut flower beds, herbs, soft fruit, and a chicken pen. This new build home is situated in a natural setting adjacent to older character properties. The featureless rear garden had a small patio with no planting, and the awkwardly shaped front garden had a low-quality drive, lawn, and paved pathway. The contractor has designed and constructed a haven for both the family and wildlife to enjoy. The front garden is welcoming, with fluid organic shapes and experimental use of rock. The rear garden reflects the modern building through strong geometry, with intricately layered planting and materials softening the effect. The planting scheme throughout brings colour, structure, and pollinators into this beautiful, cohesive space.

his large residential scheme in London was designed to create a year-round family garden. The rear garden features secluded woodland areas; an entertaining terrace with a motorised louvred cover and fireplace a barbe ue area a large terrace adjoining the house; and a charming water feature overlooked by a teahouse. The lawn level has been dropped to meet the new floor level of the house, and significant tree planting has increased privacy. In the front garden, a driveway sweeps through trees and shrubs, and a curved sun terrace is scooped out of the hillside. The construction was complex and involved extensive hidden works - the boundary fence had to be designed and constructed through protected tree root areas, involving root radar and hand digging, whilst the garden had to incorporate hidden cabling and pipes to feed the extensive lighting scheme, sound systems, irrigation schemes and other electrical features. The restricted site access was another major challenge to the construction resulting in a piecemeal approach Despite this, high uality workmanship was achieved throughout the project and, together with ambitious construction, a once-neglected space has been transformed into a stunning, multi-faceted family garden.

An extensive barren area of existing hard landscaping at this historic city centre public house in Manchester has been transformed by the contractor who undertook the design and landscaping works as part of a major restoration project. The client wanted the area to deliver a contemporary and unique signature experience, providing an oasis of natural beauty in the middle of the city and in a space overlooked by surrounding high-rise apartments. This required the contractor to host design workshops with the main contractor and the venue’s management team to discuss planting proposals, themes, and entertainment elements. The design had to allow for maximum seating capacity to enable the pub to evolve, and incorporate entertainment facilities, positioned and camouflaged to blend into the natural setting. There is an elegant grey and seasoned smoked oak staging island, and secluded seating hubs have been created by the contemporary planting scheme that uses a palette of 30 plant species. Suspended festoon lighting creates an atmospheric setting during both the day and evening.

The regeneration of this site into an aspirational place to work has seen the property undergo a physical transformation. The design complements the existing landscape assets, adding key elements to enhance the natural setting and strengthen building connectivity. Enhanced biodiversity and biophilia was achieved through tree planting, floral arcs extending and enriching plant communities, and wildflower meadows. Spaces for grow gardens, exercise, sports, formal meetings, and informal use, all enrich the social and wellness value of the landscape. Traffic calming, new links, cycle parking and accessible bus stops encourage sustainable transport and improve accessibility for pedestrians. De-paving to introduce SuDS rain gardens and raised planters enhance sustainability. Terrace planters were selectively cleared and refreshed. 30,000 plants were set out in an intricate matrix of 10/m2. Existing paving was re-used where possible, with any surplus palletised and taken to other projects. Tarmac was planed off and all subbase re-used, reducing imported materials. A gas main influenced tree species selection and positioning, with the pits requiring hand digging. The structural slab and grated lightwell restricted access and loadings for some areas. Parts of the building remained in use throughout the project and the bus route had to be diverted.

15 GROSVENOR SQUARE
This communal courtyard is shared by residents within a luxury development in London. Unused as a garden for many years, it was dominated by the neighbouring brick wall. The brief was to ensure the outside space reflected the property’s architecture and brought as much greenery as possible into the heart of the building, improving the apartment views. The new design has transformed the space with a living green wall, spanning an impactful 18 metres across and 9 metres in height. It features a variety of plants: from evergreen foliage species in the most shaded areas, to more textural planting with some flowering varieties in the lighter areas. The wall is finished with a feature portico housing a traditional water feature and large antiqued mirrors, reminiscent of the surrounding windows. The wall needed to be self-supporting, requiring complex structural engineering to minimise vibrations, whilst supporting the considerable weight of the mirrors and planting. Limited site accessibility consisted of one semi-enclosed narrow ramp as access for all works. With residents living in the property during construction, minimising noise and air pollution was key; this was achieved by using electricpowered machinery.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This was an impressive feat of engineering that has utterly transformed the outlook for residents in the neighbouring apartments and created a lovely communal space. The stylish entrance to this development of residential apartments combines fashion art with the tradition of Chengdu, Sichuan province, where it is located. The entire scheme is a podium construction and is entered down steps and through a canyon-like space lined with stone. The space continues for several metres, eventually opening out into the western Sichuan Garden courtyard, which is familiar to the residents of Chengdu. Falling waterfalls, silver trees, shadows, and halos outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of the building all fulfil people’s longing for nature. The building is to be retained beyond its original purpose of marketing the apartments, providing a beautiful space for residents to enjoy.

Entering the small courtyard, a pavilion stands at the centre over the waterfall. A low bridge passes over the water and a winding path lingers beside the stream. The pavilion is hidden in the mountain stream, so that those who are used to the hustle and bustle of the city can stimulate their senses and return to nature.

busy , the client wanted a pool for wild swimming as the focal point for her new garden, which she wanted to be a naturalistic space for relaxing and entertaining with family. Blessed with spectacular views onto rolling countryside, the garden now has a beautiful natural swimming pool with vibrant borders containing bold architectural flowers, reminding the client of her Kenyan childhood, and soft grasses to give a naturalistic feel. A stream, reminiscent of a Scottish burn, has been constructed through the garden, and a vegetable garden created with cut flower beds, herbs, soft fruit, and a chicken pen. An existing garden cabin has been beautifully incorporated into the scheme, and there is also a medicinal garden to enable the client to pursue her interest in botany and medicinal plants for healing. The garden is easy to look after, with seedbeds and grasses left standing for the birds in winter.

This modern new property in a natural setting is adjacent to older, character properties. The rear garden had just a small patio and no planting and the awkwardly shaped front garden had a low-quality drive, lawn, and paved pathway. The family dreamed of turning this blank canvas into a haven for spending quality time together and with friends and creating a garden attractive to wildlife. Landscaping craftmanship has created a sense of warmth and harmony throughout the space. The front garden now offers a calm welcome, with fluid organic shapes and experimental use of rock. The rear garden reflects the modern building through strong geometry, with intricately layered planting and materials softening the effect. A sandstone terrace flows from the kitchen, while the planters, low walls and laser-cut wall art of the fire pit are all weathered steel. Clay pavers leading to the fire pit complement the garden’s original brick wall. The terrace is home to four bespoke ‘floating’ planters and the lawn has four generous quadrant beds with naturalistic planting. Several handcrafted features including a larger porch, bespoke greenhouse and semi-sunken sanctuary space have been added in the final stages of the project, meeting the family’s changing needs.

This roof garden was originally built circa 2015 and has been maintained by the contractor since June 2019. Situated on the 15th floor, it is one of the most visited roof spaces in London, with wonderful 360-degree panoramic views of the city skyline. The garden has 352m2 of mixed perennials, bulbs and grasses, 125 linear metres of box hedging, and an architectural pergola covered with 85 different flowering wisterias, 25 apple and pear cordons, eight fan trained fig trees, 53 linear metres of self-clinging climbers, and 50 linear metres of wire-trained climbers. Despite the harsh, exposed environment, heavy public footfall, and the ever-present blight and caterpillar threats to the handclipped box hedging, this hugely popular oasis in the sky is the building’s jewel in the crown and is flourishing under the care of the passionate head gardener.

Without a doubt, the success of this beautiful space is down to the passion, commitment, and horticultural expertise of Phoebe Hay, the Head Gardener. Her enthusiasm is evident to anyone who sets foot in this 15th floor garden and in the three years she has been responsible for its care it has flourished.
