COACHING OPPORTUNITIES As a Baller Soccer coach, you have the opportunity to make an impact in the lives of the young people on your team and on the experience they have in playing the game of soccer. Please read the following commitments associated with being a coach in this league:

Develop RelationshipS. Get to know your players and their families. Build trust.

Model Character. Be an example and mentor your players through living out a life of character yourself.

Prepare for Practices and Games. Be prepared with a plan before practice and games. Teach the fundamentals of the game of soccer and work on skill development.

Prepare for Life Lessons. Review and become familiar with the life lesson for each week. Incorporate a personal story. Keep it simple. Be bold and encouraging while sharing life lessons with your team.

Demonstrate Self-Control. Encourage your team to be the best they can be and don’t lose sight of the big picture. Balance is key.

Support the Referee’s. Your lead will promote respect for authority and create a positive environment for all who participate or watch the game.

Have Fun. Athletics are a gift. Enjoy and respect the game of soccer. Competitive practices and games can be balanced with a fun experience for players.

PRACTICE OUTLINE As a coach, it is essential for you to come prepared for practice. Finalize a detailed practice outline and be prepared for the life lessons. The following is a suggested practice outline that will help make your practice time more efficient, focused, and enjoyable. Fill out each practice form with drill options on the following pages.

1. Team Meeting Cover practice outline. Teach and review fundamental rules and skills of soccer. Set the tone for the practice and encourage your players.

2. Warm Up Have players participate in movement activities. A light jog around the field will help warm up the muscles to start practice. See pages 8, section two, for examples of warm-up and skill drills.

3. Practice Skill Development Take your players through drills that teach fundamental skills essential for playing soccer. Evaluate your team’s skill level and make necessary adjustments when planning practice drills. See pages 8-14, section two, for examples of fundamental drills.

4. Full Field Drills, Scrimmage, and Games Full field drills help prepare players for game time scenarios. Scrimmaging is a great way to evaluate progress on skill development and for players to continue to refine fundamental skills. Take time to implement a few offensive and defensive set ups. See pages 14-15, section two, for examples of full court and game drills.

5. Life Lessons Review and become familiar with the life lesson for each practice. Add a personal story and keep it simple. Life lessons can be implemented during the team meeting, at the start of the practice, if that fits better with the flow of practice, or at the end of practice. See page 16, section two, for the life lessons outline.

Pick from the following sections: Warm-ups, fundamental skills, field and game drills for your practice outline options. Change up drills to add variety and fun to your practice.

WARM-UPS

Light Jog - Warm up muscles before soccer activities. Run around the field twice. Field Movement - High skips, high knees, back pedals. Arm Circles -- Start small and get bigger with arm circles until the player isdoing big sweeping overlaps with arms. Do ten forward and ten backwards. Torso Twists - Have the players twist at the torso to the left and look behind them. When doing this exercise, they should not bend front to back at all, but rather maintain straight. Twist from left to right, back and forth, ten times. Leg Stretches - Hamstring extensions, quad pulls, and bend overs between legs spread apart.

Calf Stretch -Lean forward with one leg in front of the other and stretch calf muscles.

FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS Footwork and Ball Control- Keys to footwork and ball control are balance, being on the ball’s of your feet, using both feet, quickness, being able to change direction, and having a soft touch when handling the ball. -Tap Ball Drill - Tap the top of the ball with the bottom of the toes and alternating each foot. Keep the ball stationary and move quickly. Variation: time players (30 sec) and count the number of touches. - Side to Side Drill - Have each player pass a ball back and forth between their right and left feet. Time players for quickness, ball control, and number of touches.

Receiving -

Keys to receiving are getting in front of the ball, watching the ball, cushioning the ball, and keeping the ball near the body. Players can receive the ball with just about any part of their body (feet, thigh, chest). Beginners are best to receive with the inside of the foot. Advanced players can receive with inside and outside part of foot, and with other body areas as needed during a play.

BASIC DRILL - Pair players up five yards apart and work on receiving and throw-ins. Have a player throw a ball to a teammate and practice technic of receiving the ball. Change up types of throws for receiving practice.

Advanced Drill - Station players down field to receive long kicks that are game related. Teach players to receive and control the ball well.

Shooting -

Keys to shooting are squaring up shoulders and hips to the goal, balance, taking a long step to the ball and extending the kicking leg, firmly planting non-kicking foot beside the ball, striking the ball through the center with foot, watching the ball as it leaves the kicking foot, and following through and pointing kicking leg toward the goal.

Basic Drill - Have players line up and rotate taking shots at the goal. Work on set shots, shots on the run, and shots with right and left foot.

Advanced Drill - Set up 1v1 play with a player on offense and defense, interacting at game speed toward the goal. Limit the time or number of touches before a shot must be taken.

Offense - Keys on offense are balancing the field, reading the defense, movement, spreading out the attack, passing and shooting frequently and accurately. Triangle Method - The triangle method teaches players the need to spread out, provide support, and to give the dribbler more options. The goal is for players to maintain a triangle formation on the field, with the dribbler usually at the apex of the triangle. this formation allows players to spread out the defense and offer teammates with the ball more options.

Movement - Teach players to move without the ball and to get open to receive a pass. Players need to come back to the ball to meet passes and to receive well. Spread Out the Attack - Teaching players to spread out on the field will open space for dribbling, passing, and scoring opportunities. Staying together brings more defenders and makes it easier to defend more than one player. Pass and Shoot Frequently - A useful tactic on offense is to keep the defense off balanced and out of position. By doing so, a team will give themselves more attempts to take good shots on goal and better opportunities to score.

KNOW THE GAME PLAN Coach: Gather team and ask them: How well would a team do if they don’t have a game plan? Why is a game plan important in athletics and life? Read the verse below. Then go through and teach the principle (allow time for players to respond). “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT) Principle: We all need to read Gods Word, the Bible. The Bible is not some boring book. It is God’s message to us about who He is, what’s good in the world, what’s not, what He has done for us, how we should live, and what is going to happen after this life. The Bible is our game plan for life. A lot of hard work and lives were given to allow us to have the Bible. It is a gift from God. Don’t take it for granted. Keys to knowing the game plan: First step is getting a good Bible in a translation you can read. If you don’t have one, we’ll get you one. There is even free apps and online versions available today. Read a chapter at a time through books. Maybe, start with learning about Jesus in the New Testament. Encourage the whole team to begin or continue reading. Pray for your team.

GOSPEL SUMMARY If we are honest, we will admit that something is wrong in our world. even further, we will admit that something is wrong within us. What is it? and more importantly, how do we fix it? The problem is sin. if sin is debt toward God, we owe a lot. How can our debt be paid? All religions try to do good and make things right. But ask yourself: How good is good enough? We try to do good works, pray, meditate, chant, and hope for the best. Here is what makes the Christian faith unique: You can’t fix you. only God can.

Keys to understanding the gospel: G= GOD - Is holy and the creator of all life. God calls us to be holy and He despises sin. All things were created to glorify God. O= OUR - We are God’s masterpiece out of all creation, created in His image and likeness. From the beginning, man walked with God in perfect unity. Life was full in His presence because this is how God intended it to be. However, sin changed everything. S= SINS - We rebelled against God and messed everything up. Sin separates us now, from the presence and unity with God, and for eternity. Sin brings death, physically at some point in this life, and in the life to come in hell. Sin is the worst problem. P= PAYMENT - The only way to fix this problem, is for someone to die in your place. The person must be perfect because this is what God requires. If the person is not perfect, the payment is not permanent. Since the only one who can meet God’s requirements is God, God sent himself as Jesus, to pay the cost for us by dying on the cross. His death functions as payment. He wrote a check with His life. But He also came back from the dead, as He promised, by the power of God, restoring all of creation. E= EVERYONE - We all have full access to now return to perfect unity with God through repentance and faith in Jesus. L= LIFE - By believing in Christ alone, we receive life, now and forever.

GAME DAY GAME FORMAT Time - Games consist of two halves (25 minutes each) and on a running clock, besides the clock stopping for injuries and other major issues.

Break - Halftime is a 10-minute break. Extra Time - Games ending in a tie will play 10-minutes of extra time only. Clock does not stop during this period. Overtime ending in a tie will transition into penalty kicks.

Penalty Kicks - Five players from each team penalty kick shoot-out. If still a tie, sudden death kicks.

Tournament - Last week of play will be a tournament format. Seeds will be determined by the wins and losses for each team.

GAME RULES Teams - Each team will play 6 vs 6. Five players in the field and a goalie. Playing Time - Each player must play a minimum of 1-half in each game. Playing time can be distributed in either half, for a total of 25 minutes. But playing time rule must be followed. Timeouts - One timeout per half (two per game). Timeouts do not carry over from the first half to the second half and in the extra time period. Use your timeouts wisely. One timeout is rewarded for the extra time period. Rosters - All players must be placed on a team roster by the league coordinators. No random additions of players to any team besides scrimmages.

Forfeits - Forfeits will be called for teams that do not have enough players at the start of a scheduled game. A minimum of 5 players is needed to have a game. Teams will play with an equal number of players.

Misconduct - The referees and coordinators have the authority to substitute players for a break or suspend for any misconduct by players or coaches. Fouls will also be applied as needed. FOULS Basic - Player runs into, charges, pushes, trips, or holds an opponent. Hand Ball - Intentionally or not touching the ball with hands. Offsides - Player gets closer to opponents goal than at least two defensive players (including the goalie, excluding throw-ins or corner kicks).

Intentional - Yellow card given as a warning once by official for rough play. Next time, red card and a ejection from the game. Officials can eject players without a warning if they rule a behavior unacceptable. KICK AWARDS Description - Kick awards based on where foul was committed. Direct, indirect, or penalty kick awarded depending on foul.

Direct Kicks - Free kick at the goal award for handball, kicking, striking, tripping, holding, pushing, charging into, and charging from behind.

Indirect Kicks - Free kick that must touch another player first before a shot on goal. Awarded for playing dangerously, obstructing an opponent, goal keeper taking too many steps, and offsides.

Penalty Kicks - Awarded if defending player commits a direct kick foul inside the penalty area. Player is awarded free shot at goal with no defenders other than the goalie. Penalty mark kick is 12 yards back at the center of the goal. Goal keeper can’t leave the line until after the ball is kicked.

START AND RESTART

Kick Off - Coin toss will determine which team starts with the ball. Other team is not allowed in center circle during kick off. Ball must roll forward at least one complete rotation before another player can touch it.

Goal Kick - Goalie will get a free kick after a ball goes out of bounds beyond the goal line and after missed shots. Kick must be inside goal area and on the side the ball went out. Opponents must stay outside of penalty area.

Corner Kick - Awarded when ball goes beyond goal line and was last touched by the defense. Defense must stay 10 yards away from kick.

Throw In - Awarded when ball goes out of bounds along the touch line. Throw in takes place at the point the ball went out. Throw in must be with both hands and both feet on the ground. Snap ball behind head.
