BALANCHINE’S BALLETS RUSSES Explore the origins of Balanchine’s choreographic genius in this historic triple bill, reconstructing his most significant early works while living in France. The Song of the Nightingale (Le Chant du Rossignol) is a tale of a mysterious songbird that cures an ailing Chinese emperor. What emerges is a parable about nature’s capacity to heal wounds, and the need for humanity to be led by beauty and light. Balanchine’s Apollo is as elegant and restrained as it is dramatic and powerful. His version follows the young god as he is ushered into adulthood by the muses of poetry, mime, and dance. Finally, Prodigal Son’s story of sin and redemption, taken from the Gospel of Luke, presents a universal message through an expressive score and provocative movement.

BALANCHINE’S BALLETS RUSSES
The four years during which George Balanchine worked in France for Sergei Diaghilev’s legendary Ballets Russes influenced his lifelong choreographic aesthetic. These years also introduced him to iconic artists including Coco Chanel, Henri Matisse, Georges Rouault, and Igor Stravinsky.

At just 21, Balanchine first partnered with Stravinsky on The Song of The Nightingale. Their ensuing 46-year friendship produced some of the greatest ballets of the 20th century. Their second collaboration, Apollo, with costumes by Coco Chanel, was an instant success when it premiered in Paris in 1928 and brought Balanchine international recognition. In 1929, using Prokofiev’s expressive score, Balanchine choreographed Prodigal Son, an emotional and timeless retelling of the biblical parable. Both Diaghilev and Prokofiev died soon afterward, closing the chapter on a short-lived, but brilliant company and ushering Balanchine to the United States where he eventually founded the New York City Ballet and develop his iconic American style. The works on this triple bill are presented in chronological order to show the early developments of this master choreographer.

In 1944, critics were stunned when Christensen staged the first full-length Nutcracker in America. “We can’t understand why a vehicle of such fantastic beauty and originality would not be produced in its entirety in this country until now,” reported the Sacramento Union. It was produced on a shoestring budget, but captivated a nation. Now, during this momentous year and following a $3-million new production, see the original choreography, just as Mr. C intended it—and only at Ballet West.
