Dear Friend of Ballet West: For several years in a row, we’ve been blessed with many successes to include in our Annual Reports. We are delighted that the 2015-16 fiscal year just recently concluded has allowed us the same opportunity. From sold-out tours to groundbreaking collaborations, the artistry of Ballet West continued to shine on so many fronts. The critics, the community, and all of our wonderful supporters took notice of the athleticism and beauty that was presented on stage all year long – including our five main stage productions and our Family Series offering. And, from behind-the-scenes, the Company also flourished: administrators strengthened the Brian Powell Board Chair
organization’s ties with key foundations and government agencies, advanced our powerful brand locally and nationally, and continued to keep Ballet West fiscally responsible and healthy, all while growing the Company in compelling and dynamic new directions. In December, The Nutcracker achieved the highest revenue in its 60-year history. Just one month later, we were honored and humbled when – the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation awarded a remarkably generous grant to Ballet West to enrich and enhance the physical production of Mr. C’s beloved classic, while keeping the choreography and music exactly the same. Artists across the region have been commissioned, and we are well into the throws of re-imagining the costumes, sets, and special effects for the “new” Nutcracker. The premiere of this exquisite new production will take place during the 2017 holiday season. In February, Ballet West hosted Youth America Grand Prix, the world’s largest ballet competition. It was the

first time YAGP was presented in partnership with a major ballet company. Out of the over four hundred young competitors from around the Intermountain Region, an unprecedented two dozen students from the Ballet West Academy advanced from the Salt Lake City competition to the finals in New York, where several received prestigious awards. This is a testament to the Academy’s fine work.

The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy not only grew in prestige during the past year, but it also grew physically, with the fourth campus – the Peggy Bergmann Ballet West Academy – set to open just outside Park City this summer. The spectacular new location adds three new expansive studios and world-class dance education to the area, and we are delighted to have it as part of the Ballet West family. As our organization enters its 53rd Season, we are proud to report that the outlook for this esteemed Company has never been brighter. Our team of very talented professionals on every front is dedicated, passionate, and Adam Sklute Artistic Director
enthusiastic for the future. All you have to do is thumb through the following pages to see what a strong season 2015/2016 has been. Tomorrow is brimming with even more opportunity and promising days ahead for Ballet West. With warmest regards,

For the first time in its 17-year history, the premier global dance network, Youth America Grand Prix, held a regional semi-final audition in Utah by collaborating with Ballet West. YAGP is the world’s largest ballet competition, known around the world for launching the careers of some of the biggest talents in dance. In conjunction, Ballet West hosted "Night of Shining Stars,” a gala that showcased dancers from around the world. The evening was dedicated to iconic dancer, choreographer, and former Artistic Director of Ballet West, Bruce Marks.
More than two dozen Ballet West Academy students competed at the Youth America Grand Prix finals in New York City this year, the largest contingent the school has ever sent. At the awards presentation, students of the Ballet West Academy were recognized in many categories, coming home with several top awards. Kenedy Kallas received the Natalia Makarova Award for Excellence. Ms. Kallas was also named with Colin Jacob as one of the top 12 contemporary pas de deux finalists for a piece choreographed on them by Academy Director Peter LeBreton Merz. Academy students Ashleigh Richardson and Jackson Schene were named among the top six classical pas de duex finalists. Finally, several Academy students also received scholarships to some of the top ballet schools in the world.

In March, Ballet West announced the fourth campus of the Ballet West Academy in Park City, Utah. This location of the Ballet West Academy is being made possible in-part by Peggy Bergmann, longtime Ballet West donor, and will be officially known as the Peggy Bergmann Ballet West Academy. The beautiful 6,000 square foot location, conveniently located near Kimball Junction, has four expansive sun-bathed studios. Ballet West’s longtime Children’s Ballet Mistress, Cati Snarr, accepted a promotion as Principal of the school.

SERVING
I CAN DO, an acronym for Inspiring Children About Not Dropping Out, offers fifth-grade students a hands-on dance education experience and performance opportunities. During the six-month residency of the I CAN DO program, students participate in lessons that include life skills concepts necessary to prepare for and participate in the execution of a performance. These programs also help students establish core skills to further complement their learning experiences. This year, the staff taught 531 instructional hours.
SCHOOLS
in-theatre presentations
Adaptive Dance, an arm of I CAN DO, provides special needs students with weekly in-school dance and movement instruction. Participating schools are visited one time each week throughout the school year for approximately 45 minutes. Additionally, Adaptive Dance engages student leaders in target schools to serve as mentors to special needs students participating in the program.
364
During the 2015-2016 year, students had the opportunity to attend 24 presentations from either story ballets such as Romeo and Juliet, The Snow Maiden, Beauty and the Beast, and The Nutcracker, or from repertory programs such as Jerome Robbins’ Fancy Free and George Balanchine’s Symphony in C, and Ballet West's Innovations program, which presented newly choreographed ballets.

Presented by Ballet West II, this initiative is designed to introduce students and faculty to the art of ballet. Traveling throughout Utah, it performs freeof-charge to students and faculty at each public elementary school on a regularly-scheduled rotation. This year, the program reached 127 schools.
first look First Look gives students and teachers an opportunity to see an entire performance as a fully integrated learning experience. With pre-presentation discussions and opportunities for further discussion during intermissions, students are able to recognize the attributes of an audience; develop and use criteria for evaluating authenticity, substance, and excellence; and engage in aesthetic activities for enjoyment and personal growth. | 8
