PLAYBOOK
WELCOME
2025 is going to be another one for the books, and even though the days have become a little cooler and the nights come a little sooner, it doesn’t mean the Parks & Recreation Department isn’t hard at work providing the community with activities at our over 100 parks and resource centers citywide.
On November 8th, we were thrilled to officially open Phase 2 of Bruce Beach! This second phase includes a bluff overlook with sweeping views of Pensacola Bay, a kayak launch, winding walking paths, sand volleyball court and numerous other amenities. Our priorities with this project include connecting visitors to our amazing waterfront, restoring and enhancing local ecology, commemorating African American history and heritage, designing indoor and outdoor educational activities as well as creating a cultural and educational destination at the Bay's edge. This park will surely become an iconic destination for Pensacolians and visitors alike! Kudos to all that made this happen.
The cooler temperatures also mean winter sports! The City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department is the proud host of Youth Athletics and Academics. Our youth development program Alpha Elite Youth Basketball is located at three of the City's Resource centers Fricker, Cobb and Woodland Heights. This program for ages 5 and up will prepare champion athletes through skills preparation and competitions as the program begins this winter. We could not have some activities like these if it weren’t for volunteer coaches and mentors. This just shows that the passion for our youth sports reaches far into every corner of our community. Don’t miss out on a great opportunity for your youths to participate and develop a sense of comradery and team spirit.
Laissez les bons temps rouler! The good times are rolling in Pensacola for Mardi Gras, so get ready for the king cake and beads. Did you know that many of our citywide events like parades are permitted through our Parks & Recreation Department? It takes a tremendous amount of coordinating with a number of City departments to ensure the safety and fun for all who enjoy those events, so next time you see a Pensacola Police officer or an EMT at these events, feel free to thank them for all they do for these events. I hope that everyone has an amazing winter season, because before we know it, that warmer weather is sure to make an appearance. As your mayor, I am dedicated to working with our Parks and Recreation Department to enhance recreation and leisure for our incredible city and hope that you find lots to explore here in our Winter 2025 Activity Guide, The Playbook
Happy New Year, Pensacola!
Sincerely,
Mayor D.C. Reeves
