AT THE END of the year many people like to take some time to sit down and really reflect back on the ups and downs of the past 12 months, remembering fondly the triumphs and contemplating the struggles that brought them here today. Or you can speed up the process and just take a spin through your last year’s Instagram feed. Wow, so many memories and great times! My hair has really grown out amazingly, don’t you agree? What ever happened to that flattering blouse? Ha, that was a great party. Ooh, I should probably delete this one to maintain my professional image…you know what? Just skip the whole reflection thing. The new year is an arbitrary

Downtown I m p r o v e m e n t B o a r d There are numerous studies that highlight the advantages that shopping local has on the local community. Here are some quick facts about buying local: • Buying locally produced items reduces greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the distance products travel to reach their markets. • The quantity of packing material created and disposed of is significantly lessened. • When you shop locally something in the range of 70 percent of the money spent stays in the community compared to only 40 percent staying in the community of non-locally-owned businesses. • Independent businesses raise the standard of living in your community because they take their profits and buy products and services from other local businesses. • Independent businesses are unique enterprises that contribute to the character of our community offering a more diverse selection of goods and services. • Small businesses have created 65 percent of the new jobs over the past 17 years. • When dealing with a locally owned business, customer service is likely to be handled by the owner. There is a national movement gaining steam which is known as “10percentshift,” asking people not to increase their household spending, but rather to be aware and change their habits to shift 10 percent of their current non-locally owned business purchases into locally owned businesses. The impact on our local community would be significant.

There is no better place to shop local than Downtown. Downtown has a very high concentration of independently owned businesses and restaurants. Did you know that Palafox Market is comprised of growers from within 100 miles and local artisans selling locally made creations? So with the holidays upon us, shop local and give big! PELICAN NEW
by Josh Newby
NEW YEAR’S EVE is a time to reflect on the old, look forward to the new, and of course have some fun. The annual Pensacola Pelican Drop celebration provides such opportunities for children, teens, adults, and everyone in between. There are a variety of Pelican Drop mainstays making a comeback this year, including top-notch bands such as MoJeaux, the official New Orleans Saints party band, as well as some new events to look forward to, like the teen dance party located in front of the TT Wentworth Museum. The weather is always cold, but the company is always warm as 50,000 people huddle into the heart of Downtown to celebrate the passing of another year. The street party starts at 5 pm and does not let up until everyone has successfully turned the page to 2014. Music, art, street performers, fireworks, food and the dull roar of an excited crowd help make the momentous occasion truly unforgettable. Danny Zimmern is a coordinator for the event and promises that there will be something special and memorable for everyone, be they a veteran of the night or a newcomer. “We are adding some new experiences for all demographics, including a city-wide all denominational celebration and blessing, an enhanced children and family area, and a VIP all inclusive experience called the Artel Experience, where a limited number of guests can enjoy upscale Cajun specialties with full bar and entertainment to include VIP access to the band,” said Zimmern. “MoJeaux will play hits from all genres, including Motown, right up to today’s pop and country party hits. This won’t be like a concert; it’ll be a celebration and party.”
Main Stage (Palafox and Government) 8 pm: Antoine Knight
10:15 pm: MoJeaux Midnight: Sue Straughn, Brent Lane and others take the stage for the countdown
North Stage (Palafox and Garden) 8 pm - midnight: Big Jim Brown and Speed

hits, includes shadow dancers, fire dancers, At midnight, the party will climax and break dancer performances as the event’s namesake descends its 100-foot perch. The iconic pelican is the same as every year, give or take a few tweaks by local artist Michael Dicks and his team. More than 2,000 bulbs make up its 14-foot height, 20-foot wingspan and 2,000 feathers. “In a very short time, the event has become the biggest and best New Year’s Eve celebration in the region,” explained Zimmern. “To us, the event solidifies Downtown Pensacola as a major food, beverage and entertainment destination. We feel very strongly that this year’s line up of entertainment, food and interactive activities will make Pensacola’s Pelican Drop even more recognizable, and with Palafox being named one of the 10 best streets in America, we want the Drop to make Pensacola proud.”

Lighting Style + Function Home Design
BOTH TRADITIONAL AND modern themes are seen everywhere in contemporary design, but rarely are they as effectively blended together as they are at Urban Objects. Previously located on 9th Avenue in Pensacola, this stylistic reserve of cuttingedge interior design has recently moved to 128 Palafox in order to offer a greater selection of lighting, furniture, home décor, tableware and more. The previous location was limiting for customers who wanted a more exhaustive location to find all of their interior essentials. With an expanded space in the center of a burgeoning Downtown, Urban Objects is now closer to the artistic and cultural heart of the city, a natural fit among the area’s galleries and theatres. Sarah Gillette is the owner of Urban Objects and admits that her unclassifiable style is the inspiration behind much of the merchandise adorning her store’s displays. Walking in, a customer will find minimalist light fixtures, copper and wooden accents, and bold furnishings combined to create sample home setups. “Too many styles are forced into a traditional or modern classification,” said Gillette. “My style is much more eclectic. I like to mix everything up.” Most items in Urban Objects are the work of designers spanning from local artisans to international craftsmen. Gillette places quality above all else when selecting what objects

are sold in her store. “Quality doesn’t have to be expensive, but it does have to be wellmade, and designed to last and be passed down to the next generation,” said Gillette. Right now, natural elements such as wood and copper are prominent in home style, and Gillette has made sure that her merchandise reflects that evolution. Gillette also tries to stock items that are environmentally sustainable and made in America, whenever possible. “Blues are also coming back this season, and we’re seeing guncentric motifs emerge in the European markets,” said Gillette. “These aren’t just accessories; these are works of art with a story and a history.” For the novice interior stylist, Gillette recommends selecting one or two focal points in your home, such as the dining and living rooms, or perhaps a bathroom— anywhere that guests are sure to see. Some styles can be expensive or hard to find, so tackling home design in sections can be useful. All of the items at Urban Objects will integrate well with existing home concepts and can serve as the anchors or accessories to current styles. Starting soon, Urban Objects will feature the work of local artists, and even offer a registry option for customers. Constant Coffee and Tea
·
The newest brew on the block
Chow Downtown
by Hannah Leyva
“THE CAPPUCCINO IS a perfect drink,” says Philip Switzer, an admitted purist when it comes to the art of making the perfect cup of coffee. Switzer, who has worked in various cafes for the last 10 years, now has the chance to make his mark on the Pensacola caffeine scene. He recently opened Constant Coffee and Tea in a prime location on Scenic Highway in East Pensacola Heights. “I enjoy the craftsmanship of being a barista,” Switzer says. “I like to give people delicious things.” Constant Coffee and Tea is certainly looking to build a reputation on giving people high-quality, tasty beverages. In addition to those perfect little cappuccinos, made with the help of “the best espresso machine money can buy,” a full range of espresso drinks is also offered. Pour-over coffees are also a specialty and Switzer’s personal favorite to drink. All the beans are bought from Counter
Culture Coffee in Durham, N.C. The tea menu features “smashes,” a twist on iced teas brought to Constant by Jason Switzer, the owner’s brother, a classic cocktail bartender who is now the general manager of the new coffee house. Some of the smashes contain herbs, which, combined with a splash of sparkling water, make for a refreshing, lighter alternative to the espresso drinks. Both coffee and tea menus will change depending on demand and what products are available and in season. In order to maintain quality and control over their drinks, Switzer personally trained his small, tight-knit staff. “Every drink is made by hand,” he said. “We have a little bit of a higher standard. If a drink comes out bad, we dump it.” While the interior of the café is modern, with white walls, big windows, minimalistic furniture and a vaulted ceiling over the dining area made from local deadwood cypress, Switzer’s inspiration is old school. His suggested dress code of pressed black slacks and crisp white button-down shirts “hearkens back a bit to classic Italian baristas.” Vests are optional, though both Switzer brothers wear gray vests and newsboy caps to complete

A Pensacola native who started off serving coffee as a part-time job, Philip Switzer went off to Portland, Ore. to receive his formal training at the American Barista and Coffee School. While he enjoyed learning the ins and outs of the coffee business, he knew he wanted to open his first business in his hometown. “I love this city. I left for a while and came back as fast as I could,” said Switzer, who saw a niche that could be filled. “There was a need for a traditional coffee house where you could come and sit and chill.” He also hopes Constant Coffee and Tea can become a staple of the community and contribute to the growing Pensacola area that he loves. “There is a beautiful energy right now,” he said. “It’s a perfect time.” downtowncrowd.com Dec 2013

Film In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers.
by Josh Newby
Out of the Furnace
In theaters: December 6 Starring: Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Zoe Saldana What I got from the preview: This twisty trailer involves
What I’ll be spending my $8 on:
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
In theaters: December 25 Starring: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, Sean Penn What I got from the preview: Ben Stiller plays the title character, a sad sack worker at Life magazine who is bullied by his boss and can’t find the courage to ask out his office crush. To combat this, he escapes into his own imagination, dreaming up fantastical worlds. As the Life publishing company begins downsizing, Walter decides to bring his dreams to life and travel the world. Obviously he makes more in publishing than I do. Most notable for: A quaint, dream-like Christmastime movie, this film promises an evolution of Ben Stiller the actor from Ben Stiller the “funny” man. Unqualified critical observation: I was torn between selecting this or American Hustle as my pick of this month, but the Of Monsters and Men song in the trailer gave me subdued feelings of happiness and hope, something not common in the publishing world. The movie features a venerable cast of notably funny people (Stiller, Wiig, Scott), all taking dramatic turns, a choice I hope pays off. The fact that this movie is PG means either means that A) this is a whimsical journey of wonderment and magic that the whole family can experience together (!), or B) this is secretly a kid’s movie.
a generationally poor family that struggles day to day when one of their own ends up in prison because of an affiliation with the wrong people. Law enforcement refuses to touch the case, so Bale springs into action, embodying the family savior motif. I hope you appreciate my avoidance of the obvious Batman joke there. Most notable for: The cast is one of the most impressive in recent months, with Academy Award-winners and nominees almost everywhere you look, except for Zoe Saldana, who is still counting her Avatar money. Unqualified critical observation: This gritty take on crime and poverty looks to be a harrowing experience, with actors and actresses delivering top-notch performances as people who really want an Oscar. It seems like a wellintentioned, well-made experience with people who have seen better days, just like the holidays themselves. Whether that translates into a fun two hours or just a shared feeling of indigestion remains to be seen.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
In theaters: December 13 Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen What I got from the preview: Our lovable hobbit Bilbo
Baggins continues his quest to discover just how much money studios and audiences will throw at Peter Jackson before they realize that, hey, the original children’s book was only like 300 pages long. Why is it being stretched into a nine-hour movie-going experience? Isn’t the lesson of these movies that grand things come in small sizes? Most notable for: Boundary-pushing special effects and awe-inspiring landscapes highlight the second installment of this otherwise dull adaptation. If you’re lucky enough to see this movie at its much-publicized higher frame rate, please let me know how that assault on your pupils plays out. Unqualified critical observation: I want to like these movies so much; I swear I do. The orchestral music, the motivational dialogue and the promising snippets of action in the trailer all make it look so good. In practice, though, these films never cease to disappoint even the nerdiest core of my being. I love Peter Jackson in principle, so I hope this particular Hobbit changes my mind.
American Hustle
In theaters: December 18 Starring: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper,
Jennifer Lawrence
What I got from the preview: The mafia, New Jersey
powerbrokers, conmen and dames in distress all play a part in this movie about who-knows-what. Most notable for: David O. Russell has finally come to the mainstream, after trying too hard with earlier ventures like I Heart Huckabees and Flirting with Disaster. Last year’s Silver Linings Playbook earned him an Oscar nomination and it looks like he really wants to take it all the way with this one. Plus, much of the cast is recycled from previous Russell movies, so I wonder if there’s some sort of two-for-one deal happening in Hollywood. Unqualified critical observation: I haven’t seen this much grainy cinematography and overplayed pop music since Boogie Nights, so something tells me the stars will align on this film much in the same way they did with that seminal classic. This period piece makes no excuses about why it was made: to make bad guys look good, show off Jennifer Lawrence’s, um, talent, and give parents something to watch while their kids and I are watching The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues
In theaters: December 20 Starring: Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate What I got from the preview: The perennially silly and
chauvinistic ‘70s news crew from the first film travels to New York to be a part of a 24-hour network, as the typical sight gags and memorable hijinks ensue, though in a slightly less charming way than they were presented in the original. Cameos and Journey music abound. Most notable for: Ten years after one of the most perpetually quotable movies of all time, the original cast’s subsequent fame finally died down enough to allow them time for this slightly unnecessary sequel. You stay classy, Hollywood. Unqualified critical observation: You cannot deny the original’s cultural impact, politically-incorrect humor and all. It served as a milestone in the careers for those in front of and behind the camera. With the same creative team behind the sequel, I’m crossing my fingers for lightning to strike twice.

tale of the holiday season. Our story is set in the Historic Village, a perfect backdrop for ghostly visits. Peanuts & a Charlie Brown Christmas! Peanuts Holiday is an original production of the drama department of Gulf Breeze High School, sponsored by Norma’s on the Run, and exclusive to Winterfest. After emerging from an enormous comic book, the best-loved of Charles M. Schulz’s characters—Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, and others—will present through song and dance some of the most memorable moments from the Peanuts Christmas specials. Cajun Night Before Christmas We began our journey with Troxclair, (played by Dr. Stu Bonnin) a native of South Louisiana, narrating the poem. Something magical happens when Santa crosses over into Louisiana territory. He changes teams from reindeer to gators. Gaston
the alligator leads Santa’s sleigh, and has seven companion gators to assist--Tiboy, Pierre, Alcee, Ninette, Suzette, Celeste and Renee. Instead of a shiny nose, he has glowing red claws. You’re covered with lots of glowing lights but do you have a shiny red nose like Rudolph? It’s really foggy in the swamp so Gaston is perfect for his job. Deck the Halls - a Traditional Christmas Celebration Russell’s Roost, a bed and breakfast on Cevallos Street, is the setting for a tribute to Christmas celebrations in early America, sponsored and performed by the Ft. Pickens and Pensacola DAR and Sons of the American Revolution. Christmas celebrations in colonial Pensacola centered around family, feasting, friends and faith-centered activities. This reenactment of an 18th century Christmas celebration in Pensacola includes period costumes; decorations of natural greenery and berries; crafts, such as spinning and sewing; homemade gifts; children’s games; and the traditional Christmas Day greeting to neighbors in the form of a gun salute, fired on period muskets.
The Polar Express - All Aboard the Winterfest Train First we stop with Hero Girl and Billy and hear them sing the duet of “When Christmas Comes to Town” before heading to the Boy’s house. The railroad crossing is lowered as the trolley approaches, the crossing guard waves her lantern, and the locomotive’s whistle sounds in this recreation of the 2004 Academy Award-nominated “live action” film The Polar Express. Staged in front of the historic Suzannah cottage (1804), office location of the stop’s sponsor, Lisa Minshew, P.A., your attention will be drawn immediately by the immense steampuffing model locomotive, based on the film’s locomotive, which still exists and has been listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The conductor, the Boy, and Hero Girl board the trolley and pass on the theme of belief to riders through story and song. Each passenger who, like the Boy, believes in Santa and the spirit of Christmas receives a beautiful-sounding sleigh bell that only believers can hear. Do you hear it?
Elvis Returns to Winterfest Though “Blue Christmas”—reputedly Elvis Presley’s favorite Christmas song—has been covered by diverse artists such as Ringo Starr, Celine Dion, and Smash Mouth, nobody does it like the King. And you’ll see why at this stop sponsored by Seville Quarter, Pensacola’s premier music and entertainment location. Elvis, sequined and coiffed, and accompanied by his lovely back-up singers, will board the trolley and perform his 1957 hit “Blue Christmas” as only Elvis can, and you’re welcome to sing along!
The Cat Came Back! Sporting the trademark bowtie and red-and-white striped hat, the Cat in the Hat will guide you on your journey to the imaginary world of Whoville—but keep a sharp eye out. Slinking, sliding, and slithering about the trolley, the Cat in the Hat is a mischievous cat, and you never know what the Cat might be up to. After the Cat in the Hat comes another stop to pick up Thing One and Thing Two. They join the Cat to sing an introduction to the Grinch stop. Whoville & the Grinch Dr. Seuss’s fantasyland of Whoville comes alive in this adaptation by the drama department of Gulf Breeze High School. Colorful holiday decorations and murals on the building of Brown, Thornton Pacenta & Company, P.A., the stop’s sponsor, create the illusion of enchanting Whoville. Against this backdrop, through song, dance and audience interaction, the well-known story of the Grinch— whose heart is “two sizes too small”—and his rehabilitation is told. Their gifts snatched by the Grinch, the undaunted Whos tumble out of their crowded beds and foil the Grinch’s plot to “prevent Christmas from coming” by focusing on the true meaning of the holiday season, which they’ll share with you in song while surrounding the trolley. After his epiphany, the Grinch’s heart grew three times its size, and yours will too after experiencing this delightful, fantastical performance!
Ms. Winterfest Meet the lovely Ms. Winterfest as she entertains passengers as they approach the end of the Winterfest journey. Ms. Winterfest will perform a sweet serenade of the tour with “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
Living Nativity The First Presbyterian Church in Downtown Pensacola is the locale for the staging of a live nativity. The oldest and the original Christmas story, “the reason for the season” is the focus of this reenactment, and serenading angels will join you, your friends, and your family on the trolley, proclaiming the joy of the season through song. Frosty Frosty has a narrow escape from Gaston, the alligator who is looking for a snow cone, Frosty escapes into the trolley to lead riders in the snowman song. He is joined by Miss Winterfest.

RYAN SALVIS
THE PENSACOLA ICE Flyers are the defending champions of the Southern Professional Hockey League, playing out their home games under the championship banner at the Pensacola Bay Center. One of the prominent leaders of last year’s and this year’s team has been one of the team’s captains, Ryan Salvis, who recently made his comeback to the ice this season after recovering from surgery. Fans last year voiced support for Salvis’ high points record as well as his iconic facial hair. DTC talked with Salvis about his favorite Pensacola pastimes, his secret love of Miley Cyrus, and why fans should still “fear the beard.” by Emily Lullo
ICE FLYERS TEAM CAPTAIN
DTC What do you do as a captain to help your team build on the success of last year? RS There are a few of us that returned from last year’s team and others who have been successful in the past so there are a lot of guys in the room that know what it takes to win. We have a lot of good leaders on the team. When someone talks, everyone has to listen because there’s always room for improvement. Being the defending champions means accountability and a high level of play is expected every night so that’s the message we try to pass along. All three of our captains have played in this league enough to know how the game is played and what works so anytime we can give advice on certain things it helps. DTC Tell me about your beard and its rise to local fame. RS I think it was at some point in early January [2013] when I started growing it. The team was playing well so I just figured I’d leave it for a bit. I guess with the combination of us doing so well and the beard looking so incredible I felt it was a good idea to keep it till the end. Luckily we won everything and the beard came off shortly after.
+
Q A
DTC What is your favorite place to grab a drink in Pensacola? RS Anything with a patio and some good music is okay with me. Miller’s Alehouse or World of Beers are great places and anywhere on the beach when the weather is nice.
22
Dec 2013 downtowncrowd.com
DTC Where might you be found relaxing during your down time? RS Either on the beach or the couch. DTC Describe your perfect night out in Pensacola. RS Win another championship, with my family in attendance, and after that probably have some fun! Then at the end of the night Aaron Rodgers throws me a TD pass on the beach in double coverage and everyone goes home happy. DTC Is there a song or pre-game ritual that gets you pumped before a game? RS On the way to the rink before a game I always drive with Bergin and when we go over the three mile bridge he always puts on Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA” really loud and sings it. I hate it but at the same time I look forward to it every game day. Other than that it’s a pretty normal routine. DTC How do you celebrate after a win or cool down after a loss? RS That’s a difficult question to generalize. After a win when we play the next day I’ll basically just grab some food and try to wind down, maybe throw on a movie, and try to get some sleep. I usually don’t take losing very well but I just try not to concentrate on the negatives too much. Learn from what we didn’t do well but try not to lose any sleep over it.
