I don’t know about you, but 2020 offered far too little of either of these to me. I was so consumed with my mom’s illness and then with surviving the grief of her loss and the anxiety of the pandemic and the sorrow of so many national news stories that I took little time for myself. This year, I hope to explore creative and personal endeavors that help me rediscover myself and discover new outlets for personal expression.

The new location features all the hands-on, up close interaction as the previous location plus added attractions, amenities and experiences that will make for a wonderful family day out.
Procrastination
While I often lament the state of my fur-covered sofa and curse the need for so much vacuuming, I wouldn’t trade my dogs for anything. These messy creatures offer too much love to be annoyed with them for very long. Who else is going to jump up and greet you with a wagging tail and unending excitement everytime you walk through the front door? Even if you’ve only been gone for two minutes to take out the trash. Nobody—that’s who.
On that note, I encourage you to read our COVID-19 Resource Guide, which provides resources for food, business, community and more. The ever-changing nature of this crisis necessitates that I mention that these resources may or may not be available to you by the time you read this issue. I hope it will provide a place to start, some ideas or some inspiration either way.

While many people made glorious headway on home improvement and personal projects in 2020, I did not. I did not organize anything. I did not fix anything. I did not learn a language or a new skill. Nothing. But that’s ok, too. I’m still here. That’s an accomplishment. However, in 2021, I’d like to lighten my load and empty my house of much of the clutter and unnecessary junk that fills it. It’s time to make room for something new.
All of this, plus a few DIY pet treat recipes and some good news from the Florida legislature regarding protection for pets in abusive situations.
I believe strongly in pet adoption and I’m thrilled to do my small part in supporting the Pensacola Humane Society and all of the other rescues who are providing shelter and love to millions of pets while they await their furever homes. If you have room in your life and heart, I hope you will consider adopting a pet in need—and make a best friend in the process. Is anyone tired of political ads yet? We can always count on the ads exaggerating strengths and weaknesses of the candidates but this year is so much worse. Television, which is smothered in news broadcasts, has to actually report, factually, the activity of possibly the most pathetic group of candidates ever. Truth is truly stranger than fiction. As gross as it is, there is light at the end of the tunnel. It’s August and football will soon be back!!!
Blame it on being raised in the South, or blame it on attending an SEC school. I can’t help myself. I love college football. I look forward to the first game with the same emotion I feel about New Year’s Eve. The slate is clean and the possibilities are endless. This might be the year for a national championship! Who cares if the experts say you’ve got nothing? So what if you have a new, untried coach? Any fan knows that odds and opinions aren’t worth a whole lot, as absolutely anything can happen when two teams take the field. The instant my team runs through that tunnel, exploding into the light like the second coming, joy sweeps over me and the world is all good. A great band, pom poms shaking wildly, the smell of popcorn and Jack Daniels in the air, and thunderous noise that would rival the Blue Angels set the stage for total frenzy. I could just scream with the thrill of it all. Of course, winning doesn’t hurt, either.
Several years ago, someone I truly respect and admire commented on my football enthusiasm. He said that he never
suspected that I was the type to “be into all of that”. I didn’t even know what to say. I know that he probably meant it as a compliment, as he feels that the sport is nothing more than commercial exploitation and downright barbaric, and how could someone halfway intelligent possibly promote such insanity? I almost confessed on the spot that Gladiator is my favorite movie ever, and that physical contact as sport is certainly nothing new. However, my immediate reaction was such that all I could feel was pity. The craziness of college football can’t be replaced. Hockey and soccer are great, but football is in a league of its own. This time of the year, while the heat is still oppressive and going back to school is on our minds, you can go out early in the morning and there it is. A tiny hint of fall in the air. You can feel it and you can smell it.
I grew up in a home where Saturdays were all about the games. My father had television and radio blaring in the same room with the same game on so he could hear different commentary on every play. He had his favorite team, one I shall not mention because I now and always will consider them very much a bitter foe, but it really didn’t matter who was playing. There is a certain sound that comes from a game that is almost like comfort food to me.
From the time they were babies, I took my children on road trips to football games. It was a fall ritual for us to pack for the tailgate party and get up early to decorate. Magnet decals, flags, you name it and we had it plastered on our car. Yes, maybe it was a bit like the Beverly Hillbillies, but once we hit the game day traffic the kids were almost uncontrollable. Seeing our brethren in the same colors making the trek to Jordan Hare Stadium created a bond amongst us motorists on Interstate 65. One year my son broke his arm playing football the night before the LSU game and all we could think about was not being able to go. I nearly kissed the doctor who gave us his blessing to go, as long
as that arm was held upright the entire time. We stuck a shaker in his cast and watched Auburn score four times in the fourth quarter to win the game. Neither weather, divorce, nor broken bones would keep us at home. No sir. We picked up the fried chicken in Montgomery and almost sprinted the last 60 miles to the Plains. Evidently, I didn’t do a good enough job on passing along the spirit of my alma mater. My daughter graduated as a Gator and my son a Seminole, but their love of the game is undiminished. I enjoy the Swamp and I think Osceola is the most awesome human mascot in the entire football kingdom. But when Auburn’s eagle swoops down before kick-off and perches on the 50yard line, we all get unglued. I have seen plenty of grown men cry during this raw demonstration of power and beauty. So, here we are, ready for a new season. Whether it is a new school year, a new calendar year or a new anything, starting over has every advantage in the world. Set your goals. Try your hardest. Do it right this time. Hope and determination have always been a winning game plan. War Eagle!

Panhandle Butterfly House & Nature Center A Haven for Butterfly Enthusiasts

The Panhandle Butterfly House & Nature Center (PBH) is a quaint butterfly sanctuary located in downtown Milton that houses several species of butterflies and also serves to educate visitors on these fascinating creatures.
As a program of the nonprofit organization Keep Santa Rosa Beautiful, Inc., the goal of the PBH is to “enhance the environmental awareness by connecting its visitors with Florida native butterflies, botanical gardens and nature trails.”
The PBH was founded by butterfly enthusiasts, Jack and Fonda Wetherell. Though the couple has passed on, their legacy continues decades later, as the PBH remains an active educational center in Northwest Florida.
Officially opening its doors in 1997, the PBH was established in Navarre Park, where the house remained until 2018.
“The PBH relocated from Navarre Park in 2018 due to renovations to the park by Santa Rosa County. We had to find a new home, and in 2020, we purchased the T.W. Jones property from the Blackwater River Foundation,” PBH Executive Director Pamela Murfey explained. “We wanted to create a regional conservation facility within Santa Rosa County. From there, we needed to build a new vivarium to house the live butterflies, install pollinator gardens and make the facility accessible to all.”
Once the property was purchased, a two-year renovation throughout the property began in July 2021. Renovations included the construction of the vivarium,
building repairs, planting gardens, adding an accessible walkway and more. Funding for the move and renovations came from a variety of sources including donations, gift shop sales, fundraisers, an Impact 100 grant and beyond. The postrenovation grand opening of the PBH was held last October.
The new PBH facility is the historical T.W. Jones house, located at 4966 Henry St. in Milton. This home was built in the late 1800s and sits atop 9 acres of beautiful land. While exploring all that the property has to offer, visitors will stroll through 18 different gardens, a vibrant vivarium and a short nature trail.
One of the main attractions on the property is, of course, the house. Along the hallway walls of the historic home, visitors can view more than 300 species of mounted butterflies and moths from around the world. This massive collection was donated to the PBH in 1999 by Gulf Breeze local, Dr. Tom Grow.
In addition to the expansive collection of mounted butterflies, the PBH is also home to many species of live butterflies that are native to Florida. The vivarium typically houses around 10 species of butterflies, allowing visitors to learn about the species that they may encounter where they live. According to Murfey, there are approximately 116 species of butterflies found in NW Florida, with visitors like the zebra heliconian
and the white peacock occasionally passing through. Visitors to the vivarium can see butterflies in various stages of life.
Whether you are looking for a fun and educational summer outing for the kids, or you are a solo butterfly enthusiast wanting to learn more, the PBH has something for everyone. The PBH is open to visitors Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 am to 2 pm. Adult entry is $7, individuals ages 17 and under are admitted for $5 and children 5 or younger are free.

Gulf Coast Turtle Watch is on the Job!

Summer is sea turtle nesting season along the Gulf Coast. From May to October, county, state and national park volunteers patrol the beaches each morning looking for tracks that indicate that a female turtle has come ashore and laid a nest. Each nest is roped off and monitored to ensure that the hatchlings have the best chance of making it to the Gulf. Since turtles stay closer to shore in the summer for nesting and mating purposes, they are also more prone to stranding and being accidentally hooked near piers and shore fishing spots, so in addition to morning nesting patrols, one of the area’s biggest initiatives for turtle safety relates to rescuing these stranded or hooked turtles. Beach residents, locals, and tourists alike share a love for these endangered animals, and a new nonprofit group is working to strengthen the protection already offered to marine turtles.
Gulf Coast Turtle Watch (GCTW) 501(c)(3) nonprofit was established in early 2024 by founders Wendy Hoeflich and Stephenie Allen, both longtime volunteers with Escambia County Marine Resources (a branch of the Escambia County Natural Resources Management Division) for morning nesting patrols. Local government environmental programs and the National Park System are tasked with many different conservation efforts, and various programs depend on dedicated volunteer effort and work within very tight budget constraints. GCTW was formed in large part to provide support to the existing programs dedicated to marine turtle conservation and protection. Though the initial focus is on the Pensacola Beach area, there are future plans to connect with other county and national park organizations doing turtle work throughout the Gulf Coast, as the group’s name suggests. This collaboration and connectivity will aid in fundraising efforts, grant writing, community education, etc. Currently, the Board of Directors consists of both Hoeflich and Allen along with Dale Hensley and Christine Brewster.
Though the group is new, Hoeflich notes that beach businesses, especially those surrounding the Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier, and beach residents have been incredibly excited and supportive, and support for the group has grown faster than expected. Pier owner Mike Penzone, his son Devin, pier staff, and the Pensacola Beach Lifeguards have

been especially proactive in initiatives and education to help turtles who are hooked near the pier. When a turtle swallows a hook, chances are that the turtle is a “repeat offender;” 60-70 percent of hooked turtles have been hooked before after recognizing the pier as a place to get an easy meal. Additionally, when a turtle washes ashore, it is usually because the turtle has ingested plastic, hooks, filament, or other materials that have made it difficult for the turtle to eat and swim regularly. Hooked or stranded turtles may be suffering from anemia and will only continue to get sicker. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) standards indicate that any turtle that is hooked or stranded should receive medical attention, even if it is not suffering from an obvious injury like a boat strike. The closest sea turtle hospital and rehabilitation facility is the Gulfarium’s C.A.R.E. Center (Conserve, Act, Rehabilitate, Educate) located in Destin, and if the C.A.R.E. Center is at capacity, then turtles must be transported to the Gulf World Marine Institute in Panama City Beach.
Currently, permitted volunteers have stepped up to transport turtles in their own vehicles and at their own expense, and transport protocols plus the size of marine turtles often pose difficulties in addition to the sheer number of calls received.
“It’s normal for us to receive several calls a week about hooked or stranded turtles, which is actually a good problem to have,” says Hoeflich, “because it means that we’ve built solid relationships with pier staff and fishermen, and they know to call us rather than simply cutting the line, risking further injury to the turtle.” Turtles cannot be transported without cover from sun exposure and dehydration, so pickup trucks are not eligible vehicles. Additionally, fully grown turtles can be well over 200 pounds and require enough space to ride comfortably in a transport bin, so permitted volunteers with large vans or SUVs are called upon again and again for transport. Thus, one of GCTW’s
immediate initiatives is to raise 20k in order to purchase a large transport van that would remain parked at the pier and to which many trained and permitted volunteers would have access. Currently, the group has raised about 20 percent of that goal, and additional funds would go into wrapping and maintaining the vehicle, insurance, and fuel costs. GCTW kicked off their fundraising efforts in June with Sea Turtle Sips, a guest bartending and silent auction night at The Islander featuring coastal art donated by local artists and GCTW swag. Future fundraising efforts include working with beach businesses to institute “round up” programs where patrons can choose to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar, and those extra cents would be then donated to GCTW. Though an official website is still in the works, the group’s Facebook page features a donate option and offers magnets, t-shirts, stickers, etc. for sale.

Once enough funding for the transport van has been secured, GCTW plans to focus on furthering lighting initiatives; turtles who come ashore at night to nest are disoriented by artificial lighting, flashlights, and cellphone lights, but they are unaffected by amber and red lights. Though there is a turtle-safe lighting ordinance in place for all water-facing businesses, hotels, condos and homes, it is difficult to enforce every violation, and public education and awareness goes a long way in helping to ensure ordinance compliance. Small things like keeping blinds and curtains closed at night and using red turtle-safe flashlights on the beach at night can go a long way in eliminating disorienting light exposure for nesting mothers and hatchlings. GCTW plans to work with Escambia County Marine Resources to get informative refrigerator magnets and window clings in all rental units that inform renters and tourists about safe lighting practices and ‘Clean, Dark, Flat’ initiatives that aim to keep the beach free of holes, trash, sandcastles and other obstacles that may deter nesting turtles.

Escambia County Natural Resources graciously shares its booth space with GCTW, and volunteers are out every other week to answer questions, spread awareness, and even give away red ‘turtle-safe’ flashlights for evening beach walks. Frozen Treats for Hot Summer Days
The 2024 heatwave is in full force. While the heat can be hard on us humans, it is doubly difficult on our pets who rely on the outdoors for walks, recreation and potty time. To help our pets safely enjoy these dog days of summer, we’ve compiled a few cool treats to keep your furry friends happy, healthy and hydrated.
Doggy Ice Cake

This hydrating and engaging doggy ice cake will keep your dogs entertained and refreshed during the summer season and beyond. Filled with their favorite treats and toys, the ice cake is an easy and affordable way to bring some summer fun to your four legged family.
Ingredients & Supplies
• A large freezer-safe bowl, cake pan or container
• A selection of your dog’s favorite treats fruit, peanut butter, plain yogurt, dog treats, stuffed Kong toy, etc…
• Chew toys or bones
• Water Method
1. Place the toys and treats in the container.
2. Fill the container until it is about two-thirds full. Allow some of the treats or toys to stick out from the top of the water.
3. Place your bowl in the freezer for several hours.
4. Remove it from the freezer and turn upside down to separate the ice cake from the cake mold or pan.
5. Serve in a shady spot outside and watch your pup enjoy a refreshing and engaging treat.

Blueberry Coconut Drops

Coconut oil is refreshing, delicious and comes with many natural health benefits for our fur babies. Not only will it help to improve your pup’s skin and coat making it silky smooth, it’s also said to protect our dogs from illness and help speed up the healing process if they’re feeling under the weather. These frozen coconut drops will provide a luxurious, healthy boost for your warm pooch on a hot summer day.
Ingredients & Supplies
• 1 cup of organic coconut oil (solid form)
• Handful of fresh or frozen blueberries
• 1 teaspoon of honey (optional)
Pumpkin Pops

Method
1. Place a blueberry into each section of a silicone mold with small to medium insets. Set aside.
2. In a separate bowl, heat coconut oil in a glass bowl over a pot of boiled water until it liquefies.
3. Allow coconut oil to cool for a few minutes, mix in the honey.
4. Carefully pour the oil into the silicone mold over the blueberries.
5. Place mold into the freezer to solidify.
6. When coconut oil treats are solid, pop them out of the mold.
7. Serve when hardened. Because coconut oil stays hard in cool temperatures, you can store your drops in the fridge in an airtight container to save on freezer space.
Pumpkin is a smooth, sweet and delicious food that can be incredible for cats. This fibrous fruit contains vitamins A, C and E, as well as iron, making it a healthy choice. Another nutritious food for cats is Greek yogurt. This creamy treat contains probiotics that promote gut health and protein for maintaining muscle in cats. Greek yogurt also has less lactose than regular yogurt, and can even be purchased lactose-free for furry friends with sensitive stomachs. By combining these two feline superfoods, you can create delicious pumpkin pops that your purrball is sure to love!
Ingredients & Supplies
• 1/2 cup 100% pure pumpkin puree
• 1/2 cup plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt (no added sugar or artificial sweeteners)
• Silicone lollipop molds & lollipop sticks
Method
1. Prepare your lollipop molds by setting the lollipop sticks into the mold. Set aside.
2. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the pumpkin puree and Greek yogurt. Mix well.
3. Spoon about a tablespoon of the pumpkin yogurt mixture into each circle of the mold, ensuring the mixture surrounds the lollipop sticks.
4. Gently tap the mold to remove any air bubbles and ensure the mixture settles evenly.
5. Place the lollipop mold flat into the freezer. Let set for 4 to 6 hours.
6. After setting in the freezer, you can keep the pumpkin pops in the molds, or place them in a freezer-safe storage container. When your fur baby is ready for a treat, remove a pop from the freezer and let them lick away!
7. Optional: For an extra fun touch, place a sprinkle of catnip in the mold before spooning in the pumpkin and yogurt, or sprinkle catnip on the frozen treat before serving.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, about 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. shelters annually, and roughly 1 million of them are euthanized due to overcrowding and limited resources. By adopting, you give these animals a second chance and ease the burden on shelters.
Adoption is also a cost-effective option. The average cost of adopting from a local shelter or humane society is significantly lower than purchasing from a breeder, where prices can soar into the thousands of dollars. Plus, most adopted pets are already spayed or neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations, reducing initial medical costs.

Studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that pet owners often experience lower stress levels, increased physical activity and reduced rates of loneliness and depression. Blue Angels Practice Dates

The world-famous Blue Angels can be seen practicing over the National Naval Aviation Museum at NAS Pensacola select days throughout the year. Guests can come to the National Naval Aviation Museum to watch the practice for free, with gates opening at 9:30 am. The practice flight demonstrations can also be viewed outside of NAS Pensacola including Fort Pickens, boat cruises, and various points throughout downtown. Bands on the Blackwater - Disco Kiss

Held each fall from August to October along the west bank of the Blackwater River in Milton, the Bands on the Blackwater Fall Concert Series features live outdoor music in a family-friendly environment. Concerts are held on Friday nights from 7 to 9 pm at Jernigan’s Landing located at 5158 South Willing St. in downtown Milton. The line-up offers a variety of music from local favorites to national touring bands performing Bluegrass, country, blues and rock and roll. While this brings certain challenges, it is essential that we support these initiatives if we wish to continue the positive momentum we have been experiencing. The bottom line is simple: growth is happening in our community; we need to be prepared for it and must work together to continue our positive momentum. This is not hyperbole, it’s reality.
The population of Escambia County is projected to increase steadily over the next few years, growing from 323,927 people in 2020 to 336,643 people in 2025. The number of households in Escambia County is projected to grow at a similar pace, increasing from 126,165 in 2020 to 131,065 in 2025. The population of the Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Brent Metro Statistical Area (MSA) is projected to grow from 507,667 people in 2020 to 535,914 people in 2025. The number of households in the Pensacola MSA is projected to grow from 194,521 in 2020 to 205,267 in 2025. There’s no denying that our secret is out, and that this growth is going to continue into the foreseeable future.
As new developments are announced and new projects come online, there is often pushback from some voices in our community. This reminds me of a quote I’ve heard from Quint Studer, “It doesn’t matter what you try to do, thirty percent of the people will be against you.” We shouldn’t let this attitude slow progress in our community. Our recent success shows us why.
Just look at how downtown Pensacola has developed into a vibrant destination for visitors and locals alike. It’s hard to believe there were doubters and naysayers that told us this would never happen. But thanks to those individuals that had vision and fortitude, we now have an award-winning downtown that is nationally recognized as one of the best in the country. Today, there are still parcels in downtown Pensacola that, when properly developed, will be a benefit to our residents and those who visit Pensacola.
Outlying Field-8, or OLF-8, in Beulah will be developed in the coming years. While some would like to see this area remain in its current state, the Escambia County Commission has adopted a master plan that states that,
“the project site is well-suited for mixed-use development with housing, retail, office, industrial, and hotel space.” Don’t get me wrong, every potential development needs to have due diligence done to ensure that it fits our community and enhances our overall quality of life. But too often, I see people saying no to development just for the sake of saying no to projects that will improve our region. We can’t let this attitude deter progress.
To prepare for the continued growth in the Pensacola MSA, we need to come together as the business community to work with our partners in economic development as well as state and local government officials to ensure we capitalize on the new and exciting opportunities that will be presented to us in the near future. Part of this effort includes identifying what infrastructure projects are needed locally and regionally, improvements to our educational system, training the workforce for the present and future and developing the housing inventory we need to reduce costs for homebuyers.
At the Greater Pensacola Chamber of Commerce, we invite the business community to work with us as we address these issues and move our community forward. There’s the old saying that if you’re not growing, you’re dying. Fortunately, we are growing. But we need to ensure that we work together to continue that growth and capitalize on the upcoming opportunities coming our way.

PSC Gifted $900K Metroliner Aircraft for New A&P Mechanics Program

Pensacola State College (PSC) unveiled its new Metroliner aircraft during a press conference held at ST Engineering at Pensacola International Airport on June 9.
Donated by InDyne CEO and President Don Bishop, the 1982 Fairchild Merlin IV-C Metroliner aircraft will serve as a major component of PSC’s new Aviation Airframe Mechanics and Aviation Power Plant Mechanic (A&P Mechanics) program that is expected to launch in August.
“We are very pleased to provide the Merlin IV-C Metroliner to Pensacola State College for the benefit of the students and the community. It will bring a new dimension to the opportunities afforded PSC and its students for years to come,” Bishop said.
Appraised at $900,000, the Metroliner aircraft will significantly enhance A&P Mechanics Programs, providing students with invaluable hands-on training opportunities and experience working on a Metroliner, which is a much larger aircraft than other A&P Mechanics programs typically have at their disposal.
“This aircraft will give students access to aircraft maintenance logs and training opportunities unlike those seen in traditional college programs,” Pensacola State College President Ed Meadows said at Tuesday's press conference at ST
Engineering's airframe maintenance facility. “The PSC family thanks you for your generous gift of this aircraft. It will give students the opportunity to build their confidence and the skills needed to pursue a gratifying high wage career.”
The retired aircraft, constructed in 1982 and appraised at $900,000, was given to PSC by Don Bishop, CEO and President of InDyne, and chairman of the board of InDyne's Reliance Test & Technology.

PSC will keep the plane at ST Engineering, which has partnered with the college to establish an A&P Mechanics program.
PSC also has several small planes, in varying functional status, that will be used in the 18-month certification program that is aligned with Federal Aviation Administration regulations.
Classes will be held at ST Engineering facilities, though construction of a new 25,000-square-foot program facility, which will include classroom and hangar/lab space, is expected to break ground on Pensacola International Airport grounds in August, coinciding with the start of the program.
The A&P Mechanics Program is a partnership between the College, ST Engineering, Triumph Gulf Coast, the City of Pensacola and Santa Rosa County Economic Development.
A majority of funding for the new program was secured by the state’s local legislative delegation, Senator Broxson, Representative Andrade and Representative Salzman.
Edwards explained how instrumental the aircraft would be for program instructors in providing hands-on learning to help students develop the skills necessary to pass the required Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) exams.
"I can't stress enough how supportive ST Engineering has been in working with us to establish this program," PSC’s Dean of Workforce Education Michael Listau said. “This donation allows PSC to give future technicians hands-on experience with aircraft maintenance and flightline operations
with the same type of aircraft that they will see in the industry. Adding this aircraft will strengthen our ability to produce a valuable, well-rounded graduate with real-world experience that will undoubtedly become a staple of the ever-growing Aviation community.”
In June, ST Engineering broke ground on a new 167,000-square-foot hangar at the Pensacola International Airport. The company has set a goal of creating 1,725 new jobs in the community.
Bishop said the gift of the low-wing turboprop aircraft will help in the College's mission to create jobs, benefiting Pensacola and Northwest Florida.

Parking Changes Coming to Downtown Pensacola
Beginning August 1
Starting August 1, the City of Pensacola will continue instituting the 2024 parking reforms. There are several changes we want to make the public aware of, so they are prepared. These changes include:
• The 2-hour-only parking option will be eliminated.
• Paid Parking boundaries will be expanded.
• The hours of paid parking will be standardized in downtown.
• Paid Parking will be in effect from 8 am until 11:59 pm, Monday-Saturday.
• Sundays and National Holidays remain free. The streets included in the 2024 reforms are:
• Palafox Street from Gregory Street to Main Street
• Zaragoza Street from Palafox Street to Tarragona Street
• Government Street from Palafox Street to Tarragona Street
• Jefferson Street from Government Street to Zaragoza Street Those parking in downtown will continue to enjoy their first half-hour of parking for free, after a parking session is initiated on the PARKMobile app or at a parking kiosk. New kiosks are being installed in these expanded areas, but will not be activated until Aug. 1.
Even after these changes take effect, 70 percent of city on-street parking spaces will still be free. Free parking is still available at the following locations:
• Community Maritime Park - Surface lot (Excluding special events)
• Bayfront Parkway - Surface lot
• Belmont-DeVilliers - Surface lot
• South Palafox Marina - Surface lot (During select hours)

Patti Marine Building 800-Ton Dry Dock
Patti Marine, a staple in the marine industry for 45 years, has begun construction on an 800-ton dry dock thanks to a matching $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation ‘s Maritime Administration or MARAD. A dry dock is a boat repair platform that can be flooded to allow a ship to float in and be supported by blocks — the water is then pumped out so the vessel can be serviced or repaired.
Located on Bayou Chico in Pensacola, Florida, Patti Marine is known globally as a premier shipbuilder. But in Pensacola it’s a hidden gem — a family-owned operation quietly building fishing vessels, tug boats and passenger vessels destined for seas, oceans, rivers and bays all over the world. More than 40 employees work at this shipyard that has built more vessels for the Army Corps of Engineers than any other builder within a 20 year span. And some of those employees have been with the company for more than 40 years.
Frank Patti Jr. said that the matching grant will allow Patti Marine to expand their operations and offer more ship building and repair services.
“This expansion could help Patti Marine double in size in the next 5 years,” Patti said. “That means more work and more jobs right here in Pensacola.”
Currently, Patti Marine relies on a 1200-ton rail system they created for launching vessels they’ve built, but their ability to repair and refurbish existing vessels has been limited.
“This will be a game changer for Patti Marine,” Patti said. “From oceangoing fishing vessels to passenger ferries, Patti has built them all — now we’ll be able to service them all as well.”
Patti, whose family also owns Joe Patti’s Seafood, plans to complete the dry dock construction within the next 4 to 5 months.
Governor Ron DeSantis Awards More Than $12 Million in Northwest Florida Through Job Growth Grant Fund
Governor Ron DeSantis awarded funds for workforce development and infrastructure improvements through the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund (JGGF) and the Defense Infrastructure Grant (DIG) on July 1. Awards were made to Pensacola State College, the city of DeFuniak Springs, Santa Rosa County and Jackson County for projects that will support the aviation and aerospace industry, the military and defense industry, and increase access to workforce housing.
"Today’s awards will help bring high demand, high wage jobs and businesses to Northwest Florida,” Governor Ron DeSantis said. “These strategic investments will benefit Escambia, Walton, Santa Rosa and Jackson counties and provide new opportunities for families from across the Panhandle."
“Governor DeSantis’ focus on catalytic infrastructure and workforce investments, especially in sectors such as manufacturing, aerospace and aviation, and military and defense, will continue to bring job creators and job seekers to Northwest Florida,” Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly said. “I’m especially grateful for the Governor’s support of the communitydriven visions in each of these projects.”
The following entities will receive an award through the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund:
Pensacola State College ($4,410,000) - to establish a new Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics program. This project will support the construction of a new hanger, training equipment, and operating costs for the education program which will be located at the Pensacola Airport.
DeFuniak Springs ($3,051,550) - to construct two 6,400-square-foot hangers, one 10,000-square-foot hanger, a taxiway, an access road, and associated utilities. This infrastructure will allow the airport to attract new innovative employers in aerospace and defense, including Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). The project will create 500 jobs and have a total estimated fiscal impact of more than $12.3 million.
Jackson County ($4,680,059) - to connect a workforce housing development with an industrial area with a new 1.3-mile, two-lane road. This project will create at least jobs 400 new jobs and has an estimated impact of $12.5 million. This award builds on more than $23 million in strategic investments in Jackson County, including more than $15 million through the Rural Infrastructure Fund, more than $7 million through the Broadband Opportunity Program and $1.5 million through the Florida Small Cities Community Development Block Grant program to encourage job creation, capital investment and economic development.
The Florida Job Growth Grant Fund is an economic development program designed to promote public infrastructure and workforce training across the state. Proposals are reviewed by FloridaCommerce and are chosen by Governor DeSantis to meet the demands for workforce training or infrastructure needs in communities around the state.

The following entity will receive an award through the Defense Infrastructure Grant:
Santa Rosa County Whiting Aviation Park - Security Fence Project ($500,000) - to create a secure, double-entry gate system connecting NAS Whiting Aviation Park. This will allow aircraft to move safely and efficiently between the base and maintenance area, which will enhance security and maintenance operations. A new electronic gate will also speed up emergency response and provide a secure route for personnel and equipment.

How to Improve Your Home’s Look with Wallpaper
To understand the mood of a room, look no further than its walls. Wallpaper can add instant texture and flair, and today’s DIY-friendly options make it easy to create inspired spaces with little fuss.
The key to successful wallpapering is in the preparation. Clean, dry walls are a must, and any holes or cracks should be filled and sanded. To avoid paste that absorbs into porous surfaces, take time to apply a light, even coat of primer before beginning.
Choose a corner or space behind a door as your starting point. Mark your starting point using a level to draw a vertical line from floor to ceiling. Next, cut a length of wallpaper several inches longer than the height of your wall from the baseboard to ceiling.
Apply paste or activate the adhesive according to the manufacturer’s directions. Be sure to fully cover or dampen the paper surface; dry spots may result in unsightly bubbles.
Begin smoothing the paper onto the wall using the vertical line as a guide. Begin at the ceiling and smooth using a brush or plastic smoothing tool. If you encounter wrinkles or bubbles, gently lift the paper and smooth, relaying the paper as you go.
With each strip, you should end with several inches above the ceiling joint and below the baseboard line. Ensure the paper has firmly adhered top to bottom then trim using a sharp blade. Smooth each seam as you go.
Continue this process around the room, aligning your paper pattern as needed. If it isn’t possible to completely match the pattern, focus on the middle third of the wall, which is most likely to be at eye level.
To maneuver corners, cut a slit in the paper overhanging the ceiling and floor. This allows the paper to lay flat for a smoother finish.
When you round back to your starting point, overlap your original strip of paper with the final strip. Make a single cut for a clean, crisp seam. Gently wipe away excess adhesive from the trim and seams.
To prevent rips and ripples, allow paper to dry completely –at least overnight – before replacing furniture and hanging artwork to complete your space.
