Welcome to Rosemary Beach!
O
ne of the many wonderful things about Rosemary Beach is how easy it is to spend quality time outdoors here. Being outside, rather than indoors, has of course had extra significance for our health in recent years, but know that getting outside has long been a priority for the locals here. Whether enjoying a sunset with friends on one of the beach walkovers, napping on a shady porch, playing bocce in a neighborhood park, or just taking a stroll enjoying the beautiful homes and vistas, being able to spend so much time outside is rejuvenating and invigorating.
THE IMPORTANCE OF WELLDESIGNED CIVIC SPACE One of the foundational concepts of New Urbanism is placing a high priority on the civic realm – the streets, parks, walkways and town buildings that provide the framework around which private homes, apartments and commercial buildings are organized. What does this have to do with being outside?
The answer is that the outdoor space in New Urbanist towns like Rosemary Beach is designed for moving about, for gathering and for enjoying. It is not a byproduct, the left-over space after other uses but rather it was designed first to organize and enhance the community. Communities that lack thoughtfully designed civic spaces struggle with identity, and, in turn, tend to be perceived as ordinary and boring. Places that inspire passion and excitement are typically the same places that have a strong community identity and character that is fostered by carefully designed civic space. Now that we see the general connection between civic spaces and the opportunity to integrate the outdoors in our daily lives, the value of some of the other aspects of Rosemary Beach can be more easily understood. Our Town Center is just that – it’s in the center of town, making it a short walk from any of the surrounding neighborhoods. Two other elements that were very
much considered during the design and implementation of the town’s masterplan are the locations of the four community pools – one in each quadrant, a short walk from nearby homes – and the inclusion of the Fitness Trail that winds through parks both large and small, via the network of boardwalks, with several exercise stations that are distributed in intervals throughout the community. The major streets, Rosemary Avenue, Georgetown and Charlestown Avenues, and Water Street (a ring road), connect all the pools and neighborhood parks with Town Center. That structure is what makes Rosemary Beach feel unique, like every home and shop is part of a larger whole. Each of these elements was consciously included in the plan for the town, and it is a pattern that is often repeated at a smaller scale in the individual homes and buildings, where indoor and outdoor spaces are organized to create opportunities for more or less privacy, to enjoy particular views, and to also create a sense
of connection to the outside world whether it be glimpses of the activity in Town Center, a neighborhood park, or the gulf. A MAINTENANCE PLAN FOR THE MASTER PLAN As Rosemary Beach and the surrounding communities continue to be discovered by new generations and families, the ongoing development both in and around our town will place significant pressures on us as we strive to maintain our town’s character and its common spaces, such as our parks, our streets, and our sidewalks. Less visible but no less important, there is also infrastructure such as telecommunications networks and other utilities, as well as programs such as garbage collection and parking management that all need to evolve to meet these new levels of service. The Board of Directors and staff of the Rosemary Beach Property Owners Association (POA) continue to take a proactive role to ensure we adapt to these changes as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Our Vision Statement is focused on timeless qualities and has remained unchanged: “The town of Rosemary Beach aspires to be the best family beach community in the United States, driven by quality and excellence in everything it does. By preserving its architectural heritage, natural beauty and vibrant community spirit, Rosemary Beach will be a place that blends a tranquil residential area and active Town Center where residents, guests, and merchants live, work and play in harmony.” That vision is rooted in town planners Duany PlaterZyberk’s (DPZ’s) design for the community. DPZ’s design includes many traditional features that combine to create a sense of place that is unique to Rosemary Beach, assembled in a then-new way to accommodate the ways we live, work, and play today. The degree of our success and the reliance of the communities around us on our Town Center requires that we continually refurbish and enhance our town. The POA staff are supported by a hard-working, knowledgeable and creative group of volunteer owners in the form of our Board of Directors and several committees. The committee commissioned by the POA board to advise it on ongoing and special projects to ensure that public town elements such as lighting, signage, parks, landscape, amenities and activities remain true to our vision is the Townscape Enhancement Committee (TEC). Just a few of the many other committees actively working to maintain and enhance the town are the Covenant Enforcement Committee, the Design and Development Advisory Committee and the Social Committee. Property owners can find more detailed information about these committees, particularly the TEC and the planning documents it has created, on the POA’s website. While there is no convenient time that pleases everybody to complete these many important enhancement and maintenance projects, they nevertheless must be done if we
are going to continue the success that generations of owners and merchants have worked so hard to establish. Our goal is to complete every project to the high standards of our town, as quickly as possible and with minimal disruption to our owners and guests. A vibrant community is never truly finished, and Rosemary Beach is no exception. We do appreciate your patience! COMMUNICATION We hope you enjoy this Spring 2022 issue of the Rosemary Thymes newspaper. As a quarterly publication, we try to focus the Rosemary Thymes’ content on topics of longer-term interest to our owners, merchants and visitors. As a compliment to that perspective, we also send monthly newsletters to the property owners that include updates on shorter-term issues and topics. The community’s websites rosemarybeachfl.org, which is maintained by the Rosemary Beach Property Owners Association (POA), and rosemarybeach.com, which is maintained by the Cottage Rental Company (CRC), are updated regularly with notices of interest to owners and visitors. The calendars on both websites are updated continuously and are available to all users. Take a moment to check out these online resources when you have a chance. TIME WELL SPENT We hope you are enjoying your time here, and that some of that time is spent enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends now that the warmer weather is also here. On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Rosemary Beach Property Owners Association: Welcome to Rosemary Beach!

Ancient Horticulturist: Life Goes On By Susan Broussard
A
s so many of my stories do, this one comes from past memories. It was originally published twelve years ago. It has since been shortened, then lengthened and a little bit embellished, but it is still one of my favorites. Thank you for reminiscing with me.
When my grandson was young, we had a weekly tradition of walking through and working together in the garden. As always, I tried to instill the joy of gardening in his then young mind. Sometimes we would plant vegetables that he would never eat. At other times, we would take a walk through the flowers that would soon be trampled while chasing the cat. That was part of the process. One evening, a massive rainstorm passed through. More common these days but not so much in times past. The next morning, Toby helped me tidy up the yard. Being that this was a rather boring garden task, I tried to make a game of it. I suggested we may find unexpected treasure under the fallen branches. However, what we found was a dead rat. At this point, let me stop and assure you this story comes from home. We all know that mice, rats or any other form of vermin are not allowed in or near Rosemary Beach. They would not even entertain the thought of approaching the border. It has something to do with vermin immigration laws. Just as important, why was it in my yard? Were not my army of cats supposed to patrol and keep my borders safe from such an invasion. Perplexed, I later relayed this story to a friend of mine. She suggested that perhaps it came from a colony of ‘tree rats’ and noted the information must be true as she saw it on YouTube. I decided to go with her explanation. With that now clarified, I continue. As we looked down on the rodent, the thought occurred to me that this would be a wonderful way to teach Toby about the scientific aspects of the life cycle. I thought I could use the moment to show him how something can grow old, die and still be part of this world. I thought it would be a way to open a discussion on life and death, on life after death. I thought it was a perfect subject for a perfect spring day. Except it backfired. As we brushed the leaves back from the lifeless little rat-tailed body, I began to explain the circle of life. We talked about how everything lives and dies. We wondered if even rats have a place in heaven and, by the way, the decision was yes. We carried him with honor and dignity to the back of the garden where our pet cemetery was
located. (Yes, I have read Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, but ours was not the creepy kind.) I dug the grave and continued with the life after death speech. Toby stood silently as I ended with the whole dust to dust monologue. However, what I did not count on was the trembling bottom lip that was beginning to show. I forged ahead and spoke about the little rat family missing their rat patriarch. I explained about the heartache of a rat life cut short. As I lowered the poor little fella into the grave, the tears began to flow. As I pushed the dirt over his lifeless body, the sniffles began. As I began a prayer to send Ricky Rat on his way to rat heaven, the sobbing reached a crescendo. There, beside the grave, I wept uncontrollably. After a few moments passed, Toby, with the infinite wisdom of a four-year-old, put his arms around me and put it all into perspective. “Grammy, it was only a rat.” With that sage comment, he took me by the hand and led me back to the garden. That day I saw wisdom in a small child. That day Toby saw a blubbering idiot in his Grammy. That day I learned that I was not always the grown up. Fifteen years later, my grandson is now in college, navigating life on his own. He still calls to check in with me on a regular basis. I am now retired and loving it. My garden grows as does the time I have to attend it. However, life, as it often does, takes us in new directions. This will be my last contribution to Rosemary Thymes. It has been so much fun writing for the Rosemary Beach community. Thank you to Kelly Oden, executive editor of Rosemary Thymes, along with past editor, Susan Vallee, for allowing me to share with you my joy of gardening along with a few stories thrown in for good measure. It has been a wonderful experience. As my final adieu, allow me to steal a line from the great writer, Douglas Adams, which he so eloquently penned in his epic novel, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. “So long and thanks for all the fish.”

Taking a Break from Spring Break:
Rosemary Beach is Where the Locals Go to Get Away By Fiama Mastrangelo • Photos courtesy of Rosemary Beach Cottage Rental Company
S
pring Break on the Gulf Coast often elicits images of excessive partying, an increase in local traffic and an influx of litter on the beach. Our peaceful life on whitesand beaches and salty breezes can go from idyllic to irksome when the Spring Breakers roll into town. For the locals who have put their college party days far behind them, another type of Spring Break exists in Rosemary Beach. For families and locals seeking a peaceful retreat from the tourist season on the Gulf Coast, Rosemary Beach is the “it” destination— the town was quite literally built to be peaceful.
noise ordinances are particularly helpful in maintaining a peaceful environment. According to the ordinance, music and speakers are allowed on the beach, but the volume must be kept at a level to where it can not be heard from at least 100 feet away. For residential areas, noise disturbances that can be heard from a residential property line are also totally prohibited. For the vacationer who is looking for a full nights rest and wants to enjoy a cup of coffee while watching the sunrise, Rosemary Beach provides the perfect haven from the blasting music and inebriated partygoers.
A key distinction between Rosemary Beach and other Spring Break destinations lies in the Walton County ordinances, which keep rowdy beachgoers under control. Walton County
In addition to the peace and tranquility found within Rosemary Beach, the community itself is heavily involved in building a wholesome coastal culture for locals and visitors alike. “The
Merchants Association of Rosemary Beach hosts family-friendly activities such as concerts in the park, family movie nights, strolling musicians and theater performances to name a few,” Vice President of Rosemary Beach Cottage Rental Company, Kristen Moss said. Visitors have a wide variety of luxury accommodations to choose from in Rosemary Beach. Local companies such as 360 Blue and Rosemary Beach Cottage Rental Company offer unique accommodations located in the heart of the Rosemary Beach community. Vacation rental company, 360 Blue, provides a wide variety of rental properties that can sleep anywhere from 2-20 guests. Rosemary Beach differs from other Gulf Coast destinations in a multitude of ways. Our 107-acre community is walkable and bikeable with shaded boardwalks for guests to travel to and from the beach and pools. There are several pocket parks dotted throughout the community with features ranging from goldfish ponds and fountains to a Butterfly Garden with fresh herbs and seasonal flowers. guests per rental. Both companies are rooted in the town’s immaculate design and center their rentals around Rosemary Beach’s tennis courts, communal pools and green spaces. Rosemary Beach Cottage Rental Company, “is the exclusive on-site property management company for the Rosemary Beach community,” Moss said. The company offers a wide variety of amenities that are perfect for family vacations. “Guests who book through Rosemary Beach Cottage Rental Company enjoy exclusive complimentary court time at the Rosemary Beach Racquet Club, complimentary access to the Rosemary Beach Fitness Center and endless free DVD rentals,”Moss explained. Guests can also expect complimentary bike rentals, discounts to local businesses and access to four different pools located within Rosemary Beach. Another local company, 30A Luxury Vacation Rentals, works exclusively with privately-owned luxury homes. Chris Gifford founded the company in 2013 and currently serves as the president of 30A
Luxury Vacation Rentals. Gifford’s company manages more than 85 properties in 30A, with the majority of them being located in the Rosemary Beach community. “Spring Break has always been a very popular couple of weeks down here… It’s always traditionally been a highly demanding week,” Gifford said. “One trend that we’ve seen over the past few years during COVID, is that we do have guests visiting our areas from nontraditional markets.” Gifford noted that his company has been seeing guests come from all reaches of the country, including the Midwest, Northeast, and Southeastern regions. Families from Chicago, New Jersey and Texas flock to Rosemary Beach to find respite from colder temperatures and the rowdiness of more popular Spring Break destinations. “I mean Spring Break, fortunately, is really only geared towards families on 30A,” Gifford added. Activities for visitors reflect this value. “Rosemary Beach differs from other Gulf Coast destinations in a multitude of ways,” Moss said. “Our 107-acre community is walkable and bikeable with shaded boardwalks for guests to travel to and from the beach and pools. There are several pocket parks dotted throughout the community with
features ranging from goldfish ponds and fountains to a Butterfly Garden with fresh herbs and seasonal flowers,” she explained. One particularly popular amenity for families is the ability to reserve a private beach bonfire. “We work hard to provide our clients a vacation and not just a property to rent,” Gifford said. “We try to do a good job to educate our clients about all the things you can do here on Spring Break that you’re probably not aware of. Bonfires are probably the number one thing.” During the peak months for Spring Break, Gifford notes, “It can still be a little chilly at night, so it’s awesome to get the whole family out and have a bonfire, roast some s’mores, and experience that on the coast.” Take a well-deserved break from this year’s Spring Break madness and explore the tranquility that Rosemary Beach has to offer.

Can you provide a bit of background on your career as an artist? Where do I start? So basically, I kind of grew up in an unorthodox family, and I didn’t have a path to college or even finishing school. I moved out when I was sixteen years old, and so I just had to figure out ways to survive in the world. I never had guidance or a vision to do things the way the whole world did them, and so I just kind of made up ways that I could survive and live in the world. Art just kind of fits in that path, because you can just kind of make up the rules as you go along, and I never really had any rules as a kid. I started out in the restaurant business and became a chef and hated that—hated the long hours—but I loved cooking. Still love cooking. But once I got burned out on that, I was building furniture, and then one day I started to paint on a piece of furniture, and I just kind of followed that path of least resistance. [It] just felt right, and I just moved into it and haven’t stopped since.

INSPIRED BY LIFE ON 30A A LOOK INTO JUSTIN GAFFREY’S METHOD By Fiama Mastrangelo
LOCAL ARTIST, JUSTIN GAFFREY, DOESN’T LIMIT HIMSELF TO ANY ONE PARTICULAR ART MEDIUM. Gaffrey’s works fall somewhere in between the realm of paintings and sculptures, and the sky is the limit for the self-taught artist. Now a master in sculptural acrylics, Gaffrey has become a celebrated artist with his own unique brand through his use of heavy-bodied acrylic paints. Life on the scenic route of 30A can be of great value to an artist seeking inspiration in natural places. Though Gaffrey is best known for his landscape works, the beautiful natural escapes around him provide the artist with the space to explore artistic visions and work through ideas for more conceptual pieces, rather than serving as his primary source for inspiration. Gaffrey opened up to Rosemary Thymes about his career trajectory, artistic method and some of the upcoming projects that he is working on.
How would you describe your style overall? I don’t settle in one area. There are areas that are popular that I do, kind of like when you get a popular song, and everyone wants to hear it. But personally, I just constantly have ideas where I want to try new things, new styles, and explorations—different psychologies of the way I feel about the world. So, my art just jumps all over the place. I’d say landscape is my foundation, and that’s what’s most popular. But my style jumps all over; I can’t paint landscapes every day, even though it just flows super naturally, because I get bored and I’ve got to challenge myself. Can you describe your artistic method when you begin to work on a piece? I think the inspiration comes from many different places. If I’m in a beautiful place in the environment, hiking or walking or on my boat, I might see something that inspires me which is very direct. A lot of my conceptual work comes when I’m not at work, when I’m not even thinking about work, and an idea comes. I was in New Mexico recently, and I couldn’t sleep because I was thinking about all these art ideas that had nothing to do with the landscape. None of the paintings that I conceptualized when I was in New Mexico had anything to do with the landscape I had seen. I wanted to make art that everyone participated in. Like every piece required somebody to initiate an action to complete it. I had a sleepless night thinking about all these pieces that somehow would have a hidden part, or almost like some kind of treasure hunt where people had to go out and find other parts of the piece to finish it. And it might be buried in a desert or in a safe deposit box in Iowa. Somehow it will always have a life to it that other people participate in.
ROSEMARY THYMES | 21
What is the origin story for Gaffrey Art Material? Early into my career, when I started to paint with heavy textures, I got that “aha!” moment, and that kind of thing where you jump into a flow. That’s when I started painting with texture. It’s like, “This is my thing, this is what I love.” I would learn how to paint, and sometimes I would work for a week on a painting and then just get bored and never want to finish it. But when I started working with texture, I just had this flow, this flow state, and that just became my way of work and at that point in time, heavy body acrylics just really didn’t exist. And so, I just started buying whatever I could in acrylics that just had texture in them, and I couldn’t find anymore. If you go to an art store, it’s too expensive, so I would buy online and I cleared out a lot of the online stores. And I was like, “Oh no, I’m out of paint. What am I gonna do?” And so, I was like, “I’m gonna figure out how to make it,” and I hired an analytical scientist to help me develop the recipe. I flew up to New York and just started researching how to make paint. That was probably about 13 or 14 years ago, and I just got so busy. I’m 51 now, and I’m like, “If I’m going to make paint, I better do it now. If I’m going to start this company, now is the time.” Have you found that living in 30A influences your work in any way? Landscape inspires me. One thing I love about living in 30A is we have a lot of natural buffers: we have the beach, the dune lakes, we have the forest, we have the Choctawhatchee river. We have a lot of natural spaces around us that buffer the encroaching development around us, because our town is getting really busy, but there’s always been this place where I can exit the world of people into the natural environment here. So of course, you observe the natural environment which becomes inspiring. I think that is the foundation of a lot of my work, but at the same time you get that space. I’m not a highly social person, I like to be out in the wilderness out on my own, or with my dog, or with my girlfriend, but I like to just exit the world. When you have that space, your mind opens up and you get to work on those conceptual pieces like I was working on in New Mexico, because I don’t have distractions. So, 30A provides me both the natural environment to paint landscapes, but it’s also provided me the escape from the business of the world to have the space to think and conceptualize things.

Outdoor weddings have grown rapidly in popularity over the last few years, and for good reason. Outdoor venues can’t be beat in terms of natural scenery, great lighting and plenty of natural backdrops for photos. The great outdoors provides a glorious backdrop for weddings. Whether on the beach, in a garden or on a rooftop, an outdoor wedding can be both serene and beautiful. Plus, there is something intimate and personal about getting married with bare feet in soft white sand. And while outdoor weddings tend to give a more relaxed vibe, they can always be glammed-up with strands of twinkling
Western Green This remarkable outdoor venue boasts a vast, sweeping lawn flanked by native shrubs and wild rosemary. The Western Green is dramatically situated along the shoreline overlooking the pristine waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Perfect for both ceremony and reception, the Western Green is conveniently located at the south end of Main Street in the heart of the Rosemary Beach community. Western Green also boasts two public bath houses designed by former town architect Richard Gibbs.
string lights or a big white tent decorated to the hilt. While the pandemic made fresh air venues practical, an outdoor setting can make both the ceremony and reception magical as well. Rosemary Beach is the ultimate destination for a lush, outdoor wedding— from pristine beaches to grand park plazas and even luxury pool decks, Rosemary Beach has an outdoor venue to meet every happy couple’s needs. Outdoor settings also provide bigger spaces, which eliminates the need to limit your guest list. However, if you want a smaller ceremony it’s easy to create a more intimate setting too.

St. Augustine Green Flanked by a line of live oak trees, St. Augustine Green is the largest of Rosemary’s parks and a popular outdoor wedding venue due to its expansive lawn, park benches and pavilion with stepped terraces. Tucked into one of the quaint corners of the community, St Augustine Green is surrounded by some of the best examples of the architecture that embodies the true essence of Rosemary Beach. The Owner’s Pavillion just north of the Green creates a beautiful backdrop. Surrounded by lush greenery, the St. Augustine Green venue provides a quiet and tranquil setting for your special day. This outdoor space also features two doublestalled bath houses and is just a two minute walk from Barrett Square.
Similar to the Western Green in both its look and style, the Eastern Green is still beachfront, but is situated in more of a residential area of Rosemary Beach. This large sweeping lawn will offer the same pristine views of the Gulf with a touch more privacy for your exclusive event. The Eastern Green also boasts two public bath houses designed by former town architect Richard Gibbs. Various rental properties are also located on and around the Green.

The Beach
Leslie + Matt photo by Amy Riley Photography
With emerald waters and sugar white sands, the beaches of Rosemary are unparalleled in their beauty and serenity. The salty air, the sounds of the surf and the soft between your toes combine to create an unforgettable wedding experience. The beach venue rental is for the duration of the ceremony. Weddings must rent a reception venue (Green or Town Hall).
The Pools
While architecturally diverse, the pools of the Rosemary Beach community offer unique and unexpected backdrops for your event. Whether choosing the drama of the Sky Pool with its retractable ceiling, or an unparalleled outdoor pool, you’re certain to impress with a trendy pool side occasion.

Violet was at a celebration of life where they also celebrated a birthday. They went to lunch as a family and got to sing karaoke. Violet got to sing twice and had so much fun even though there was some sadness surrounding the weekend. Makenna (9) and her brother Maddox (12) went to Crystal Springs to swim with manatees. It was so cool and there were so many manatees. Makenna said the best part was the manatee touching her and loved it when one of the manatees unzipped her mom’s wetsuit. They said the water wasn’t too cold either thanks to the wetsuits. Madeleine (11) went to London for Christmas. She said her favorite part was walking through Harrods and admiring everything. They had lunch inside and had delicious pizza. Her family also enjoyed walking through downtown London and admiring the different streets display of Christmas lights. Every street had a different type of angel.

Bruiser is playing basketball and their team is currently undefeated! It’s been a great way to stay fit during football’s off season. Maggie-Lee, his sister, toured and registered for high school. So exciting.
Emma turned 9 a couple weeks ago. She had her favorite chicken with cheese dip. They got a birthday cake from Publix. It was vanilla with a pink balloon on it. She also got her recorder in school! She’s been practicing and her dad is going to teach her how to play Hot Cross Buns. In March they’re going on a trip to see snow! She’s never seen snow before! Lilah and her brother Carter are fostering a puppy. He’s about a year old and is a Great Pyranese. He’s a great companion to their older dog, Barry. It’s been an adjustment but they’re he is fitting in so nicely.
Marilyn went to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama with her fifth grade class. It was so exciting and fun.
with her brothers. She sent her mom a photo of her bloody mouth while she was at work. It had been loose for quite a while.
Daniel just graduated from a 5 point harness to a booster seat! He and his brother David went to see a hockey game with their dad! David loved taking pictures of the hockey players and editing the photos.
Baby Oakes isn’t losing teeth yet, but he did get his first two teeth! He is a drooling machine and has two tiny little pearly whites on the bottom. He’s also getting really good at sitting up in the high chairs and eating food at the table.
Julian had his first job interview and got the job! He’s excited and nervous for his first day in a couple of weeks.
Kirie (9) auditioned for the lead part of Cruella in her theater’s presentation of 101 Dalmatians. She landed the part and is so pumped to finally play a villain. Carter and his good friend Drew were able to go to North Carolina to see some snow and go skiing and snowboarding for Drew’s birthday! Carter was super responsible and completed his homework that he would miss due to the trip and had a lot of fun. It was definitely a trip that neither of them will soon forget.
discovered that borax wasn’t necessary when washing soda, castille soap and lavender essential oils were present. Way to go, Lillian.
LIllian (12) was in the Classical Conversations science fair. Her challenge group A had three participants. The other two experiments were on popping boba and electrolytes. Lillian did hers on homemade laundry soap and whether the ingredient borax was a necessary component. In her experiment she
The Williams boys, Pierce, Beck and Nash went on a super fun vacation to New Hampshire. They snowboarded all day and then surfed all night at the indoor waterpark. None of the boys wanted to go come home but they made it back! AND NOW ONTO THE LOST TEETH… Hayden (6) from Mississippi lost three teeth while on vacation. He was watching a movie and pulled out the top tooth. Three days later he lost a bottom tooth. The tooth fairy was able to locate him even while he was on vacation. Emilia (9) lost a tooth while she was playing games
Kendall (8) is getting braces! They’re going to start with hardware in her mouth and she gets to pick out rubber band colors. Her first choices are light blue and green. After she gets her braces her mom told her that she would take her to get ice cream. Daniel has lost so many teeth! The tooth fairy comes every time. His brother David has also lost a bunch of teeth.

SCI-FI SHOWDOWN
BY STEPHEN MCCARTHY / EDITED BY WILL SHORTZ
Stephen McCarthy, originally from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is a Ph.D. student in Stockholm studying transportation modeling. This is his third Sunday Times crossword and his fourth Times puzzle overall. There is a little trick to this one, and your solution may not match everyone else’s. The middle part of the grid, Stephen says, was the most challenging to construct. — W.S.
