From the POA Welcome to Rosemary Beach!

Here.

AS THE COOL WEATHER SUBSIDES, colorful hues return to our plants and trees, and sunshine creeps deeper into the evening, the spring season is arriving at our niche of paradise. With it comes new life and energy throughout Rosemary Beach, and our owners and guests get to relax and enjoy all that our special town has to offer . From sunbathing on the beach and strolling along the community boardwalk to shopping and dining in Town Center, our desire is that you savor your time here and have an experience with wonderful memories to last a lifetime.

Just like the seasons change and a new year creates new beginnings, I believe our community is in a time of experiencing a rejuvenation, and there is excitement in what our future holds. The town of Rosemary Beach is a relatively young community. The infrastructure was completed several years ago, and the final construction of new homes is now within sight. Now we find ourselves making plans for continued improvements over the next few years to keep Rosemary Beach shining.

To most of you we say, “welcome back,” or, “it’s great to see you again,” or better yet, “can you believe we get to live in paradise?” We also extend a warm welcome to the many new residents who have recently set down roots and to many new friends that are enjoying our town. Our 600 properties across the community have many new faces and we all are working together to improve this town that is already so magnificent. We have a mindset of perpetual improvement so that our Rosemary Beach never suffers the negative consequences of complacency. Our overall purpose is for this to be a community with beauty to the eyes and comfort to the souls of all who live, visit and work here.

My tenure as the Rosemary Beach Town Manager began late last year. Although I had been very familiar with this community for many years, it was not until I began spending every day here, learning its dense history and meeting its people, that I gained a wonderful new perspective on what this community is and the sincere passion that so many have for it.

One unique characteristic about Rosemary Beach, as well as other communities in this area, is that its day-to-day operations are a function of a Property Owners Association as opposed to a typical for-profit hospitality company. The Association members, you the owners, manage the town through a board of directors and staff.

This allows for wonderful benefits in the community, such as having an understanding of its members’ needs, first-hand. We can prioritize and pursue new projects and services based on their benefit to its people rather than the extreme focus being on profit margins and intense return-oninvestment analyses.

This is evident in many of our capital expenses such as our multi-year street replacement project, where we are replacing our aging concrete streets with rain-permeable pavers to improve the aesthetics and functions of our roads.

We are also in the process of replacing our common area pine straw mulch with a hardwood flame-resistant bark mulch to improve drainage and curb appeal as well as assist in preventing fire hazards. Our grassy lawn greens and parks, which require constant maintenance, will soon have landscaping improvements to improve their appearance and appeal for all who use or pass them by.

ROSEMARY THYMES | 10
We are Glad You are

We have purchased new chairs and umbrellas this year to improve your experience while on our beach. We encourage you to enjoy them if you are living or visiting Rosemary Beach.

Our maintenance team continues their daily work in making sure streets, boardwalks and pools are maintained, and are on hand to complete other repairs and maintenance that often go unnoticed. Most of our maintenance crew have been with us for well over a decade and we appreciate all that they do.

Our 24-hour security team works hard to keep everyone safe, and to ensure everything runs smoothly during busy times. If you see any of our security staff around, please say hello, and let them know if you have any questions about the community.

As we host many visitors for several weeks of Spring Break, we want everyone to have a great time. We also want to continue our mission of being the best family beach community in the United States. Our staff, along with assistance from the Walton County Sheriff’s Department, will be enforcing rules and policies to help keep everyone safe, prevent damage, and prolong the enjoyment of all who live in town and that visit us during this time.

Beginning Saturday, March 4 through Saturday, April 8, there will be an 8 pm curfew for those under the age of 18, who are not being accompanied by an adult. This curfew is consistent with most other beach communities along 30A. There will be security guards stationed at all beach walkovers as well as throughout the community enforcing this curfew. There will also be sheriff’s deputies stationed throughout Rosemary Beach to assist us with this effort. During this time of Spring Break, residents and visitors alike may be asked to show amenity passes when using our community pools or crossing the boardwalks to the beach. If you are asked, please understand that we have added staff during this period that may not recognize you as a longtime homeowner or frequent visitor. This team is here to make sure we all have an enjoyable Spring Break period.

We are pleased that you are in town. We hope that you are happy and relaxed during your time here, but also that you respect other owners and guests in the town and keep all activities here in a spirit of family-friendly enjoyment.

The following page describes, in detail, our policies for Spring Break. You may contact Rosemary Beach Security with any questions regarding these policies by calling (850) 699-3469 or emailing poa@rosemarybeachfl.org.

Spring Break Information

Curfew:

Rosemary Beach will have an 8 pm curfew for anyone under the age of 18 who is not accompanied by a parent. It has been discussed with other communities along 30A, and they will also implement an 8 pm curfew, such as Seaside Town Council, Seacrest Beach and Watercolor.

After 8 pm:

We will not allow backpacks, bags, ice chests or any receptacles capable of holding or concealing alcohol or other contraband any instrumentality that can conceal alcohol on the beach.

The beach will be a dry beach after 8 pm and no alcohol is allowed.

Amenities: (Beach, Walkovers and Pools):

The beach walkovers will have security attendants on the walkovers. The attendants will monitor activity and confirm that anyone attempting to access the walkovers has an RFID access card. The guest access cards are white with a purple logo and the owner access cards are white with a green logo.

If you do not have your access card, you will not be allowed to access the amenities and will be turned away.

Each property receives the following:

• 4 access cards for a main house

• 2 access cards for a carriage house

• 3 access cards for a condominium

If the cards are lost, there is a replacement fee of $40.00 each. The replacements can be issued between the hours of 8:30 am and 5 pm, seven days per week at the POA office. You can also email sierra@ rosemarybeachfl.org.

Parking:

Guest parking passes are required to be displayed on the vehicle if parked on the street in the common areas. Each property (main and carriage house combined) receives two parking permits for its guests. The guests should utilize the private parking spaces at each property before using the common area spaces. Each property has at least three private spaces.

Information should be displayed on each permit with the address, dates of stay, and an emergency contact phone number that will be answered. This helps in case we need to have the vehicle moved or if something happens to the vehicle.

Family-Friendly:

Each guest should be mindful of their neighbors and maintain a reasonable noise level while on the property, no house parties, illegal activity such as underage drinking, vandalism, drug activity or any behavior deemed to be inappropriate and disruptive to the community. These actions may result in the notification of law enforcement, management company, and/or property owner to determine the course of action. These activities can result in eviction from the property, and trespass from Rosemary Beach.

Security:

The Rosemary Beach POA Security Team will be actively patrolling the community on bikes, on foot and in golf carts.

We have scheduled extra duty deputies from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) during Spring Break and will have them monitoring the property between the hours of 2 pm and 12 am each night. The WCSO has increased its staffing for Spring Break, providing an additional 25 + deputies working on 30A, along with plainclothes officers, Beach Patrol, and the Intel Division monitoring social media. The command bus will be in Rosemary Beach every other week in a rotation with the Seaside community.

12th Annual Rosemary Beach UnleashedTM Dog Festival

On November 22, 2022, amidst a starting cold weather snap in the Florida Panhandle, two and four-legged friends braved the brisk temperatures for a sunny afternoon of lively, tail-wagging festivities to benefit Alaqua Animal Refuge.

Presented by Rosemary Beach Foundation, the family-friendly event welcomed guests with music and some precious animals up for adoption from Alaqua.

The centerpiece of the 12th annual event was the always popular Westminster-style pet parade complete with dog contests including best costume, best trick, best look-a-like to their owner, and best of show.

Thank you to Rosemary Beach® Racquet Club (Top Dog Sponsor, Disco (Leader of the Pack Sponsor), and for the continued support of sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and attendees. Much appreciation also to the families that donated to feature their furry pets on this year’s event posters.

The Rosemary Beach Foundation recently presented a check to Alaqua for $10,000 to be applied to the Foundation’s $50,000 visionary pledge to support the nonprofit’s capital campaign “Second Chances Start Here.” This investment will help build and expand Alaqua’s new one-of-kind animal facility and sanctuary on 100-acres of donated land, and will impact the future of the thousands of animals that are saved every year, including the people that love them.

As the Southeast’s premier no-kill animal shelter located in Freeport, Florida, Alaqua believes that every abused, neglected and homeless animal deserves a second chance—including domestic, farm, and Florida’s important wildlife.

In March 2023, Alaqua will once again open its doors to the public after being closed for over two years due to the pandemic, hurricane flooding, and construction/labor delays. Friends joing in the momentous celebration each Saturday in March by attending a series of month-long events to mark the opening its new, permanent home. Learn more at alaqua.org.

EMERALD COAST CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER

Rosemary Beach Foundation donated $17,500 to the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center. The gift will help provide mental health counseling to child abuse victims to restore their childhoods often lost to abuse.

Funds will also support child abuse prevention education efforts to empower Walton County students to protect themselves in a world sometimes adult no longer can. All services are provided at no cost.

MUSIC IN PICTURES

In 2012, Rosemary Beach Foundation expanded their outreach with the establishment of Music in Pictures educational arts initiative. Over 4,000 students (Kindergarten – 12th Grade) from 20 Walton County schools are participating in the 12th annual program. In collaboration with Florida State University faculty, the year-long project includes art instruction, performances by classical musicians, juried student exhibition and professional development for teachers. “Music in Pictures is such a gift to our schools! It sparks a students’ imagination and appeals to their many diverse backgrounds and skill levels.” Jennifer Rhea, Art Instructor, Emerald Coast Middle School.

“The senses required to create the artwork gives the students freedom of expression and exploration.  The entire process from first note heard, through sketch and medium application, inspires students to take control, growing their confidence and creativity, while in turn providing them a product for the community to enjoy.”

Rosemary Beach Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, operates on program revenues, sponsorships, grants and contributions from individuals and businesses. To learn more and to become a Friend of Rosemary Beach Foundation, please visit rosemarybeachfoundation.org.

Share the Beach with Nesting Shorebirds

Disturbance threatens survival

Many Florida shorebirds and seabirds nest on the open beach, where they lay eggs in shallow scrapes in the sand or sea shells. The nests are so well camouflaged that they can be accidentally trampled by unsuspecting beachgoers. When beach-nesting birds are forced to fly or run from their nests, their eggs and chicks are left vulnerable to the elements and to predators. Disturbances that cause birds to take flight or leave their young may threaten their survival.

Each nest is critical

Populations of beach-nesting birds are declining due to significant modification and disturbance of beaches due to human activities. The fate of each delicate nest is truly critical to the survival of these birds. By being a responsible beach-user, you can help beach-nesting birds and their young survive.

You can help! While enjoying the beach, take these simple steps:

Keep your distance

If birds become agitated or leave their nests, you are too close! A general rule is to stay at least 300 feet from a nest.

Respect posted areas

Avoid posted nesting and resting areas and use designated walkways.

Never intentionally force birds to fly

When birds are chased or disturbed, they use energy they need to reserve for nesting and migration.

Keep pets away from nesting areas

Even well-behaved pets can be perceived as a threat to birds and will disturb them. If you take pets to the beach, keep them leashed and away from nesting areas.

Keep the beach clean and do not feed wildlife

Food scraps attract predators such as raccoons and crows to the beaches. Litter on beaches can entangle birds, sea turtles, and other wildlife.

Spread the word!

If you see people disturbing nesting birds, gently remind them how their actions may hurt birds’ survival. If they continue to disturb nesting birds, please call and report their activities to FWC’s Wildlife Alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

Avoid getting too close to beach-nesting birds

Beach-nesting birds view people and pets as a threat to their nests and young, and will react defensively when you get too close. You will know you are too close if adult birds react to your approach by standing up, running or flying from their nest.

If you remain too close to beach-nesting birds, they may try driving you away by calling out loudly and dive-bombing you. Some species may pretend to have a broken wing to lure your attention away from a nest.

When adult birds are actively defending in these ways, they can’t protect eggs and chicks from the hot sun. Those defensive actions may also attract the attention of predators such as herons or crows.

If beach-nesting birds alert you that you are too close, immediately leave the area! As you leave, please keep a close eye on the ground for eggs or chicks that may be hidden in your path.

Volunteer with your local shorebird partnership! Visit flshorebirdalliance.org to get involved.

Chimney Swifts

A Delightful Warm-Weather Visitor

Rosemary Beach has many spring visitors. Most visit their favorite home or contact the Rosemary Beach Cottage Rental Agency to book a perfect weeklong get-away. There are some very visible visitors that have a much easier time finding temporary accommodations to enjoy our beautiful town, and they don’t pay a thing. They do, however, contribute to our comfort and delight. Chimney swifts, a bird local to the area, have become part of the spring and summer tradition in Rosemary Beach.

Chimney swifts are small birds, about 5-7 inches long. Their bodies are stubby with a blunt tail and long, narrow, back curving wings and with an overall brown to black coloring. Usually active during daylight hours, they can be seen flying in and out of chimneys in groups usually just after dawn and as we approach sunset.

Chimney swifts migrate from South America to Florida each spring, arriving to the Gulf Coast sometime in March to reproduce. The birds need a vertical surface to successfully land and build their nests. In the wild they would traditionally use caves or hollow trees to build their nests. Masonry chimneys make a perfect alternative for that hollow tree, and Rosemary Beach’s numerous masonry chimneys, and those of our many neighboring communities, offer the birds a perfect alternative to nest and hatch the next generation of these helpful avians.

In Rosemary Beach, we recommend tolerating the birds using your structure because you may be helping the population grow. Their numbers have been on the decline in recent years due to loss of suitable nesting areas. Yes, our traditional construction techniques allow successful nesting, while modern metal flues do not. In most cases, birds temporarily residing in chimneys are not cause for alarm. They can be heard at times as they fly in and out and when the hatchlings emerge. Keep in mind, these inconveniences are temporary since chimney swifts migrate south in winter. The birds are also very beneficial while present because they eat flying insects, including mosquitos. It is recommended that the flues on the chimney be placed in the closed position in spring and summer while nesting is occurring. If chimney swifts have nested in your chimney, an inspection and possible cleaning is recommended following the nesting season for safe fireplace use.

Chimney swifts are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) and state protected by Florida’s adoption of the MBTA

(Florida Rule 68A16) and general prohibition for nest take (Florida Rule 68A-9.002). It is illegal for anyone to “take, possess, import, export, transport, sell, purchase, barter, or offer for sale, purchase, or barter, any migratory bird, or the parts, nests, or eggs of such a bird.” Because chimney swifts are protected, removal must not harm the birds. A permit is required from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove an active nest from a structure. Inactive nests may be removed outside nesting season without acquiring a permit (Florida Rule 68A- 16.003). A nest is considered inactive if it does not contain eggs or flightless young.

So, enjoy our protected spring visitors. Take note of their aerial acrobatics. Be thankful they might snack on a few mosquitoes, and when they depart know that our Florida summer is drawing to a close.

What are they doing in our chimneys?

Resting and Sleeping: When Chimney Swifts come to rest, they never sit on perches like most birds. Their long claws are suited only for clinging to the walls of a vertical surface, like a chimney.

Building Nests: Chimney swift nests are constructed of small twigs woven together and stuck to vertical surfaces with the birds’ glue-like saliva. Nesting can occur one to two times per year each summer. The total nesting time frame for chimney swifts is between 30 and 40 days.

Laying Eggs and Rearing

Hatchlings: From the nesting positions they will roost, lay eggs and raise their young. The female lays three to five eggs. Incubation typically lasts from 16 to 21 days and young fledge between 14 and 19 days after hatching.

For more information on chimney swifts, contact the Northwest Region of the Florida Fish And Wildlife Conservation Offices at 850-265-3676.

“Wellness, overall, has always interested me whether that is working out or caring for our body and soul,” Nava said. “We want to make sure that we focus on experience so that when people come to Vivo it is not in and out. They are receiving a full experience and having that relaxation that shows

PROTECTING OUR NESTING SEA TURTLES

Sea turtle nesting season runs from May 1 through October. Please help these beautiful creatures survive by following the clean, dark and flat rules.

CLEAN: Remove all of your belongings, including trash, when you leave the beach.

DARK: Artificial lights distrub nesting sea turtles and hatchlings. Turn off all lights on or near the beach and close to all curtains in beach facing windows.

FLAT: Please knock down sandcastles and fill holes when you leave the beach.

MORE DO’S AND DON'TS FOR SEA TURTLE NESTING SEASON

DO NOT shine any light on the sea turtle and/or its face. The light may cause the female to abort the nesting process, or other sea turtles nearby may be discouraged from nesting if there are lights on the beach. If you are using your turtle safe filter over the lens of your flashlight, you should still refrain from shinning the light directly at the face of an adult or a hatchling.

DO watch from a distance. Stay clear and out of sight of the turtle. Stay behind the turtle and remain as still and quiet as possible until she begins laying eggs; otherwise you may scare her back into the sea.

DO NOT take pictures using a flash, including camera phones. This highintensity light can be even more disturbing than flashlights.

DO NOT touch or handle the sea turtle. In addition to being illegal, you may injure the turtle or cause her to leave without completing the nesting process.

DO NOT stand in the turtle's path to the ocean.

DO NOT handle sea turtle eggs or put anything into the nest. You can introduce bacteria or injure the eggs.

DO watch from a distance and remain quiet and still if you encounter hatchlings emerging from the nest. Keep all lights off.

DO leave the hatchlings in their nest and allow them to emerge and crawl to the water on their own. Scientists believe this crawl to the water is important and imprints the location of that particular beach on the hatchlings brain. Adult female turtles will return to the same beach they hatched from to lay their eggs.

DO NOT disturb tracks left by adult or hatchling turtles. Researchers use the tracks to identify the species of turtles that nested, as well as to find and mark the nests

Coastal Day Trips

Who doesn’t love a road trip? Open road, open skies and the promise of adventure at every turn. While Rosemary Beach and the 30A community offer more than enough amenities and adventures for the average visitor, homeowners and long term guests may want to explore the inland areas of Florida’s panhandle and discover the beauty and history that exists off the beaten path. Fortunately, Rosemary Beach is just a hop, skip and a jump from a variety of historical sites, unique natural wonders and wildlife encounters. These locations are perfect for a quick day trip or even a long weekend. Either way, you’ll come back renewed and ready for a long day at the beach

SOUTHERN GRACE LAVENDER FARM

Southport, FL

southerngracelavenderfarm.com

Air Force combat veteran Jason Leabo and his wife, Kari, started Florida’s first lavender in 2018. With 1,240 Phenomenal lavender plants on about a quarter acre of the 4-acre farm, there is plenty of room for Southern Grace Lavender Farm to grow. The farm offers guided tours, which include information on planting, harvesting, distilling and blending the aromatic plant. Southern Grace also houses a small boutique where the couple sells their homemade lavender products in the form of candles, soaps, sachets, room spray, body lotion, tea, honey and more. The farm also offers occasional gatherings and workshops when weather and social distancing guidelines permit. Check their website for more hours and event information.

PANAMA CITY MURAL TRAIL

Panama City, FL bayarts.org

When Hurricane Michael roared through Panama City in 2018, the city’s arts community saw a chance to show the city’s resilience and vibrancy. “With our town becoming a somewhat blank canvas, it allowed us to unite, repaint, and rebuild ourselves into the type of city we’ve always wanted to be,” Jayson Kretzer, executive director of the Bay Arts Alliance, explained. As a result, art has been at the forefront of discussions as the city’s parks and buildings are repaired, and the Bay Arts Mural Project emerged. The Bay Arts Mural Project raises funds for (mostly) local artists to paint murals citywide, which will result in a Panama City Mural Trail in Spring 2021. The trail will include 7-9 murals, with more to come. The murals will be located in the walkable historic districts of Downtown and St. Andrews, as well as the Millville and Glenwood neighborhoods.

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS

Defuniak Springs, FL defuniaksprings.net

The quaint town of Defuniak Springs is a mere fifty minutes from Rosemary Beach. The town sits on the banks of the springfed Lake Defuniak, which is a true rarity— one of only two such almost perfectly circular bodies of water in the world. The other is located in Switzerland. A collection of Victorian homes surrounds the lake and adds to the nostalgic charm. Founded in the 1880s as a railroad stop for the L & N Railroad, DeFuniak Springs retains its old Florida look and feel. In fact, the Walton County Library on Circle Drive is the oldest library in Florida still operating in its original building. It houses an interesting assortment of antiquities, including an impressive medieval weapon collection and many first-edition books. The former

L&N railroad depot now houses the Walton County Heritage Museum. The town became the winter home of the New York Chautauqua, an educational movement that attracted thousands of visitors to Defuniak Springs in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Chautauqua Vineyards, a 40-acre vineyard located 12 miles north of Defuniak Springs offer tours and tastings of their wide variety of muscadine wines.

PONCE DE LEON SPRINGS

Ponce De Leon, FL floridastateparks.org/park/ponce-de-leonsprings

Named for the famed explorer who sought the fountain of youth, Ponce de Leon Springs may not grant you eternal youth, but its majestic beauty will certainly relax your mind while its crisp cool waters are sure to revive your senses. The crystal clear water maintains a year-round temperature of

68 degrees. Approximately 14 million gallons of pure water emerges daily from the Ponce de Leon Spring. Spring water emanates from the aquifer deep underground. European settlers and American Indians before them used this spring as a source of drinking water and recreation. While the spring is the main attraction, the park also offers ample opportunity for hiking, birding, fishing, snorkeling and even geocaching.

SEACREST WOLF PRESERVE

Chipley, FL

seacrestwolfpreserve.org

Wild animals are fascinating and potentially dangerous creatures. If you love the idea of spending time with wild wolves in a relatively safe environment, this is the trip for you. Seacrest Wolf Preserve, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to wolf and wildlife conservation through education. At Seacrest Wolf Preserve, humans and wolves connect in nature for educational purposes. The rare hands-on wolf-human interaction are profound learning opportunities for humans to connect on a deeper level with wolves in the hope that visitors will be inspired to join the effort to save

ROSEMARY THYMES | 24

America’s wolves and wild heritage. The preserve offers a variety of tour options, but the four-hour Saturday educational tour is the most economical. It includes plenty of wolf centric education and interaction with three wolf packs, including both Grey and Arctic wolves. The tour concludes at the small animal adventure where guests can cuddle with skunks, interact with foxes and feed the raccoons. Only children 12 and older are allowed on the wolf encounter tour. Camping is also available on the preserve.

FLORIDA CAVERNS STATE PARK

Marianna, FL

floridastateparks.org/park/florida-caverns Florida Caverns State Park is the only state park in Florida to offer cave tours to the public. Inside the dry (airfilled) caves, visitors will see incredible formations of limestone stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, flowstones and draperies. The park’s caves have a long and interesting geologic history

beginning about 38 million years ago when this area was submerged beneath high sea levels. Shells, coral and sediments gradually accumulated on the seafloor and as sea levels fell, these materials hardened into limestone. During the last million years, acidic groundwater dissolved crevices just below the surface creating cave passages large enough to walk through. Stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone and other fragile cave-drip formations were by a similar dissolving process by the naturally acidic rainwater. The caves provide a habitat for the blind cave crayfish, cave salamanders and three species of cave roosting bats. The park also contains the Chipola River and Blue Hole Spring, which provide areas for fishing, canoeing and boating. Florida Caverns State Park is popular for camping, picnicking, fishing, hiking, and horseback riding. The park also features a nine-hole, New Deal-era golf course set in beautiful rolling terrain.

FALLING WATERS

Chipley, FL

floridastateparks.org/park/falling-waters

The star of the show at Falling Waters State Park is most certainly Florida’s highest waterfall. To see the waterfall, visitors follow Sink Hole Trail, a boardwalk flanked by huge trees and fern-covered sinkholes. Falling Waters Sink is a 100-foot deep, 20-foot wide cylindrical pit into which flows a small stream that drops 73 feet to the bottom of the sink. The water’s final destination remains unknown. Located a few miles south of I-10, the quiet and serene park also offers visitors the chance to see beautiful native and migrating butterflies in the butterfly garden, take a dip in the lake or have a family picnic. Hikers enjoy trekking through the green, gently sloping landscape of North Florida. Fullfacility campsites nestled in a shady pine forest provide the perfect excuse for an overnight stay at Falling Waters.

Sloane (10) finally nailed her round-off back handspring back tuck. She also got to fly for the first time at cheerleading and was only a little bit afraid.

Karsen (10) got straight As on her last report card. She also got to try flying for the first time at cheerleading after typically being the base due to her height! Way to face your fears, Karsen.

Nash (11) was the high scorer for his last basketball game! He managed to score 10 of the team’s 16 points! He is also going to play travel basketball with Northwest Florida Dream basketball league.

MaggieLee (15) got her driving permit! She had to go to a different Department of Licensing after being randomly selected to retake the written exam! Stay safe, ML!

Huckleberry (7), Edith (5) and Oakes (1) got their first passports issued! Edie said since it was her name and her picture she should definitely be responsible for the passport! They had plans to go to St. Thomas and to ride over to St. John of the British Virgin Islands for their first stamps. Huckleberry found a basketball goal

somewhere in St. Thomas along with a GIANT hermit crab and Edie found the most fun rope swing in the 600 year old pirate forts.

Kirie (10) started back at public school after being homeschooled for 3 years. Her mom got a job at the local elementary school and Kirie was excited to join her mama back in school.

Mallory, Matilda and Penelope took their first trip to Hawaii! They have hiked many mountains, played in the resort’s amazing pool, gone down the waterslide, participated in a luau and visited Starbucks.

Beckham (5) joined basketball for the first time! He loves dribbling and passing! He also restarted t-ball for the second time.

Carter (14), Coen (11) and Charlie (9) went on a Disney cruise after Thanksgiving. They went on Disney’s newest ship, The Wish. They loved Disney’s island the most.

Julian (16) got his driver’s license! It’s been such a long journey to get it and his mom is very happy. He still hates getting gas and parking the van.

Lucca got to spend his 14th birthday in the city that never sleeps! He spent the week in NYC with his parents visiting cool places, seeing Beetlejuice on Broadway, and eating all the yummy food.

Caroline has a school project where she takes her stuffed animal friend around the country and takes pictures of her travels. Pitty (pusheen kitty) has been on seven or eight trips already and has even gone out of the country! She has many more travels planned because the project lasts until the end of February!

Emilia (10) joined basketball for the first time! She’s had a lot of fun learning the game and playing defense. She is excited to stay in shape for spring lacrosse which will start soon. She also went to Pensacola to do an outdoor Alice in Wonderland escape room event. Her favorite part was being the leader and being in charge of selecting correct answers.

Drew (11) from Auburn, AL spent some time at the beach with his cousins and family. He gets to spend time with his step sister too. He got the among us character he really wanted.

Oliver & Elias went to see the Dallas Cowboys play the Jacksonville Jaguars game in December. Their family has season tickets so they can see the other teams. They have field passes and box seats on the field so they could watch the players warm up and practice on the sidelines. They met Jerry Jones, the Cowboys’ owner, Coach Dan Quinn and the players! In January they went to see the Titans play the Jaguars and they met Robert Griffin Jr III (RG3) Jason McCourty, and Amy Strunk- the Titans’ owner! Then they saw the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play the Dallas Cowboys!

And now onto the lost teeth…

Eloise (6) from Linville, Indiana lost a tooth at the beach. Her big sister pulled the loose tooth out! She has four more loose teeth.

Hall (6) from Birmingham lost her front tooth. Half of it was hanging off and the school nurse pulled

it out the rest of the way. She got a pink treasure box. And, the tooth fairy came. The one right next to it is almost about to fall out. And, she got fairy hair in Birmingham.

Stellan (10) had a premolar that was loose. His mom helped him wiggle out the corner and he popped it out the rest of the way. It was bleeding kind of a lot and it made him feel woozy. He sat down on the toilet and then had to throw up. It was a lightning quick transition. The tooth fairy rewarded him bravely for his quick thinking and speedy reaction time.

Owen (12) had a wiggly tooth. He kept wiggling it until it was so loose it was barely hanging on. He kept bothering his siblings with the tooth hanging on by a thread and finally it fell out. The tooth fairy came and rumor has it he has another loose one.

HOLLYWOOD REMAKES

Jeremy Newton, of Austin, Tex., is an engineering manager for mobile games at SciPlay. He’s been making crosswords for The Times since 2008. He says this one is a special accomplishment, because the idea for it has been kicking around since 2010. He finally managed to find a consistent theme set he was happy with. While creating the puzzle, he mumbled a lot. You’ll soon see why. —
