A FEW WEEKS ago I was in the midst of another busy day at the office. Between tirelessly typing up stories, transcribing interviews, updating layouts, and staring pensively out my large fourth story office window overlooking the lush treetops along North Palafox, I took a brief respite to check my Instagram feed when I noticed an odd pattern. Several friends had posted pictures of themselves posing in various spots around Downtown with small, colorful paintings that had been placed throughout the streets, free to anyone who came across them. Sensing a lead on a unique story as well as a possible free thing for myself, I quickly grabbed a coworker and launched an investigation. The Instagram photos led us on a madcap scavenger hunt down Palafox, along Government and back up Jefferson Street. We ended up finishing the hunt slightly sweaty and empty-handed, but I nevertheless appreciated the whimsical jaunt that turned all of Downtown into a semi-secret art gallery, and broke up an otherwise ho-hum day at the office.

It’s this kind of surprise that makes Downtown special to me. Despite seeing it almost every day, I still view it as a playground, where even as the editor of a Downtown publication I may not know every single thing going on each day. There are still treasures to be found, whether that means a literal Instagram-led treasure hunt through the streets or just rediscovering your favorite festival. Two of my own favorite festivals are returning in September and though they bookend the month, they go hand in hand in my heart (and tummy). The Emerald Coast Beer Festival is the first weekend and the Fiesta of Five Flags Seafood Festival is the last, and both will serve up a huge crop of delicious offerings! For beer drinkers, the big tasting at Seville Quarter will have more than enough unique brews to find your favorite style. Seafood Fest will bring its usual array of music, art and all manner of seafood stylings, filling Seville Square to Bartram Park with its signature goodness. September also brings a particularly stuffed Gallery Night, which will feature both a public wedding and CANstruction, a competition that showcases architectural talent through competitive building of structures made entirely from canned goods. On Sept. 19, don’t miss the surprises, art, music, food and familiar faces that will fill the streets. One familiar face you’ll likely see is that of artist Rafi Perez, who is always in front of Seville at Artists Row on Gallery Nights. Rafi is the outspoken artist that placed the series of paintings around Downtown and then hinted at their locations via social media. Also in this month’s issue, DTC spoke with Rafi about his work as one of the growing number of artists and innovators intent on keeping things interesting here in Downtown.

PENSACOLA MUSEUM OF ART’S
Suite Soirée by Emily Lullo
Pensacola Museum of Art is known for bringing exhibitions from a massive range of media and time periods, but for one night each year it’s also known for serving up an evening of decadence at its annual edition of Suite Soiree. Suite Soiree is the museum’s premier fundraising gala, offering a lavish night with a delicious five-course dinner set against the backdrop of the latest exhibit to hit the museum walls. This year’s event takes place Sept. 18, kicking off with a reception at 6 pm during which attendees will be able to bid on silent auction items. The gala will move upstairs for a seated five-course dinner that will showcase some of the best in local restaurant offerings. Each course will feature a different local chef, including Dann Dunn of H2O; Mike Johnson of Cloud9 Chocolates; Mari Josephs of Carmen’s Lunch Bar; Irv Miller of Jackson’s Steakhouse; Blake Rushing of Type; and Daniel Watts of Wine 4

Bar on Palafox. In addition to the cuisine, guests will enjoy a wine airing with each course. The gala event will be held in the gallery space on the second floor of the museum where Hunting for Slonem, an exhibit of colorful and whimsical paintings by artist Hunt Slonem, will be displayed. Between courses a live auction will take place, offering up chances to bid for exciting goods and Collier Merrill will be the master of ceremonies for the evening. Funds raised during Suite Soiree with support exhibits, educational programs and the preservation of the PMA. Art lovers and patrons are invited to spend a night at the museum for an evening of fine cuisine and the arts. Tickets are $150 per person and table sponsorship opportunities are available starting at $1,500. Tickets are available at the museum. Pensacola Cooks Kitchen
Chow Downtown
By Emily Lullo
When husband and wife team Jacki and Mike Selby started designing and teaching cooking classes in 2006, they had little idea that it would lead them to where they are today. As the owners of Pensacola Cooks, the Selbys are making an impact offering unique culinary learning experiences, delicious food for the community, and a place for aspiring food entrepreneurs to begin the journey into the industry. The pair had retired from careers that trained them in instructional design for organizations ranging from school systems to military contracting, so turning their passion for education to the culinary world was a natural step. The pair and partner culinary instructors formed the basis of their cooking classes at Distinctive Kitchens. “We developed our kids programs there and we started listening to what the customers wanted,” says Jacki. “It just evolved and it got bigger and bigger.” After Distinctive Kitchens closed, the team continued doing classes at other locations and developing mobile cooking classes that brought their instruction everywhere from offices for corporate team building to private home supper clubs to children’s birthday parties. Soon the 30-plus instructors and chefs they worked with started pointing out that the Selbys could grow their concept even more with their own kitchen, and after cautious deliberation and research, Pensacola Cooks acquired its own commercial kitchen space. Modeled after the incubator kitchens the couples saw sprouting up in the Midwest and along the east coast, the 1,000 square foot space at 3670 Barrancas Ave. has allowed Pensacola Cooks to grow its reach to both hungry learners as well as aspiring caterers and food entrepreneurs. Under the leadership of executive chef Nick Farkas, Pensacola Cooks Kitchen also started a lunch and dinner service from 11 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday with a menu built on the Hungarian family recipes from Farkas’ own parents’ kitchen. This month they launched a breakfast service, as well. “You can carry out your lunch or you can have a $1 cooking class,” Jacki says. “You come in and get a Hungarian meat loaf for $5.95, and for $6.95 you can stay, talk and interact, so we’ve turned it into a learning experience.”
The menu expands globally as patrons can pin their culinary heritage on a large wall map, and they can even submit family recipes that might be chosen as the recipe of the month and served as a special that the submitter can even come help cook. Jacki says this is their way of sharing heritage with others and connecting people with their culinary roots. Another aspect of Pensacola Cooks Kitchen is the incubator kitchen. People with a catering business or food product they’d like to sell beyond the cottage food industry need a commercial kitchen to prepare products, which can be a huge expense. The Selbys offer initial consulting with interested entrepreneurs, even supplying the city and county forms necessary to get started, before contracting with the aspiring business people to offer space in the kitchen to prepare their goods. Jacki says they want to help other people in the industry become successful, and her own daughter even initially rented space to launch her handcrafted frozen custard company. “The idea of a successful incubator is they come out of the incubator and they can get out into the community and get a storefront if that’s what they want,” she says. “This is an opportunity to help them so you don’t have the overhead that you have in a commercial kitchen.” A shared kitchen client is showcased monthly at the kitchen and guests are invited to taste and critique their offerings to give feedback to the entrepreneurs. Pensacola Cooks continues to offer traditional onsite cooking classes, with variations for children, couples, and families, as well as mobile classes. They offer catering and will fit a completely customized menu to a specific budget. The possibilities of the kitchen space are often explored by creative clients, including women in need of space to cook for a family reunion, groups that do massive holiday baking, and even a father celebrating his 80th birthday by getting behind the line and preparing his favorite meal for guests. “When the phone rings we just don’t know,” Jacki says. “We’ve been overwhelmed with the response and the creativity of people when they realize what they have available to them.” Look out for a full calendar of classes, events and announcements at facebook.com/ pensacolacooks or pensacolacooks.com.

SEA
FOODFEST
BY KARIANNE PAYTON
THE 37TH ANNUAL Pensacola Seafood Festival is back and better than ever! Starting Friday, Sept. 26, Downtown Pensacola will be the hotspot for seafood lovers. The festival will take over Seville Quarter along with Bartram and Fountain Parks through Sunday, Sept. 28. This three-day festival will be free, and will include food, art, and entertainment all weekend long. There is even something for the kids to do on Saturday and Sunday, with arts and crafts, face painting, and a touch pool area that will be an interactive experience with living sea creatures at Bartram Park. Over 30 food vendors will be lined along Government and Alcaniz Street with seafood dishes such as crab cakes, coconut shrimp, seafood gumbo and so much more. However, there will also be a variety of non-seafood options for those who prefer other fare. Florida Blue’s Food Truck will also participate and feature their Celebrity Chef who will have healthy cooking live demonstrations. Starting Friday at 5 pm, live music will fill the streets until 3 pm on Sunday. Musicians and bands such as Hotel Oscar, Bo Henry Band, The Revivalists, Cole Vosbury, NBC’s competitor from The Voice, and so many more will perform. Bring chairs and blankets to get comfortable and listen to these wonderful musicians. Make sure to participate in The Pensacola Seafood Don McCloskey 5K Run/Walk and burn all those calories that will be collected over the weekend. It will be held Saturday, Sept. 27 and will be sponsored by the Pensacola Runners Association. The race/walk will commence at Seville Quarter at 7:30 am. To register visit pensacolarunners.com For more information regarding the Pensacola Seafood Festival visit fiestaoffiveflags.org.

MANY IN PENSACOLA are already familiar with Rafi Was Here Studios, or at least they’ve seen the hand-painted SUV that loudly proclaims its owners’ presence wherever it rolls. That vehicle, along with the prolific artwork and optimism that flow forth from Rafi Was Here Studios, have become the trademarks of the creative local pair behind the wheel: Rafi Perez and Klee Galligan. The husband and wife team each work in their own media, sometimes collaborating. Rafi generates colorful and evocative paintings on wood or canvas while Klee works with tiny tools and wire, beads and metal to create unique jewelry pieces. The couple met in Chicago and then took the iconic car on a two-year journey around the country before landing in Pensacola and deciding to stay. The couple says that even coming from a bigger city, they feel like Pensacola’s art community has become their home. “There’s so much to get involved in here and there’s so much potential to create things that people can get involved in because people are interested,” Klee says. “There’s way more momentum here for artists.”
You can almost always find Rafi and Klee at their booth at Palafox Market on Saturdays from 8 am to 1 pm as well as at every Gallery Night along Artists Row in front of Seville Quarter. Recently they also became a part of the Blue Morning Gallery family, so art lovers can now check out their work seven days a week. Their ubiquitous Downtown presence is no accident. Rafi and Klee say they just love the energy and people Downtown. “It’s the perfect place to have fun, which is everything that we do,” he says. “It’s about fun and meeting new people. It’s not about selling art. My art will sell if somebody sees a piece and they really connect with it.” Their attitude toward their work and life in general definitely flies in the face of the brooding artist stereotype. They gravitate toward and exude positivity, whether it’s through a bright series of paintings or the imaginative ways they engage with the community. “I had been thinking for about a year that I wanted to say ‘thank you’ to Pensacola,” Rafi says. “Because here I am for two years and I’m a very successful artist and it’s because of the way that the people here have
embraced me.” He created 42 small-scale paintings, starting with images of his signature birds and dynamic trees set against brightly hued backgrounds, and he and Klee set about hiding them, mostly in plain sight, throughout the Downtown area. They weatherproofed each painting and affixed a sign that read “Take me home, I’m free” to each one so that any passerby could find and own a piece of art. The Studio’s newsletter recipients got the first set of clues, then Instagram followers got in on the impromptu scavenger hunt as well. “It was just spreading a little bit of joy and happiness and leaving them,” he says of the project. “I thought that was the coolest thing ever to just leave a little bit of happiness anywhere.” If you missed out on the hunt, you can still find Rafi and Klee’s paintings and jewelry, respectively, and even a series of collaborative works of jewelry that feature tiny versions of Rafi’s paintings. Just stop by the gallery, market, or the Sept. 19 Gallery Night and tell them, “Hola!” They love that. For more information visit rafiwashere.com.

emerald coast beer festival* * an event on sept. 4 and 5 designed to allow the public to taste a large variety of beers. this is an opportunity to sample all styles of beer and determine your preferences. beers from microbreweries, specialty bottled beers and homebrewed beers will be available for tasting. the event will also include food vendors and free entertainment. by josh newby. BEER CAN BE many things—an excuse to get friends together, a topic of conversation, or an intimidating prospect—depending on who you are. There are so many different types and styles, from dark ambers to pale ales, the novice may be simultaneously excited and perplexed. For the veteran drinker, there is always something new to taste, a new accent to appreciate or homebrew to sample. Well now there’s a fun, inexpensive night on the town meant to cater to both the amateur and the expert. The Emerald Coast Beer Fest, which has been delighting Pensacolians for more than 20 years, brings together home
brewers, craft breweries and the beerdrinking population for two fun events. On Sept. 4, Seville Quarter’s Apple Annie’s room hosts a beer pairing dinner, which sold out early this year due to increased demand. On Sept. 5, the beer tasting will take place throughout the entire complex, where nearly 200 different beers from a number of different breweries are available to try. Participants must be 21 or older to sample the beers, and Escambia Bay Homebrewers secretary April King promises something for everyone. “You have to come with an open mind,” said King. “Some people don’t like
dark beers. Just try one. This fest is all about discovering a new, delicious beer.” King recommends that participants eat a meal before coming and to limit themselves to a dozen or so beers. “This is a great opportunity for novices to discover what they like,” said King. “If you find something you like and it is distributed locally, you can support the brewery by purchasing from them in the future.” Although the festival benefits the breweries and distributors; its main purpose is to help support charities like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida and the Seville Rotary. And with 2,100 expected participants, the benefit to both non-profits is huge. “It’s a fun event and has grown from a handful of guys trying each other’s beer to something that we can share with tourists and that outside breweries can share with
us,” said King. “We have breweries as far away as Louisiana and Tennessee come.” What makes this festival unique, according to King, is the opportunity it provides to actually learn a thing or two about the beer-making process. Guests have the chance to talk with the brewers and learn their secrets, as most breweries will send a representative to accompany their precious barrel-encased cargo. “It’s not just a fun time,” said King. “It’s also educational.” VIP entry for the beer tasting is 5 pm on Sept. 5. General admission is at 5:30. Designated drivers can get in for just $10 and are given water or soft drinks throughout the evening. Beer tasting prices range from $25 to $60. Check out emeraldcoastbeerfest.com for more information and to buy tickets.

THERE ARE FEW things more universally loved and characteristically Southern than the perfect art festival, where a bevy of local talent is on display and the smells of delicious food travels through the air alongside live music. And while art festivals in Pensacola’s summer and fall months are frequent and plentiful, few have had the longevity and benefit as many people as the New Beginnings art show. Profits from the festival benefit FavorHouse, a local non-profit task force whose mission it is to address abuse and domestic violence in the area. Debbie Tracy started the festival 16 years ago with the desire to give back to the community and do something for the domestic violence problem in the region. She wanted to give the victims of abuse a second chance while spreading the beauty and hope that art can offer. “The show started originally with just nine artists,” said Tracy. “I had to beg people to participate. Now, it has grown to over 75 artists
with food vendors and musicians. People now beg to participate. It’s amazing what can happen when people come together to accomplish what they believe in.” The New Beginnings Art Festival is located in the park at corner of 12th Avenue and Gonzalez Street across from the old Sacred Heart Hospital. Guests can come enjoy time in the sunshine surrounded by the best of Pensacola’s art scene on Friday, Sept. 19 from 4 to 7 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 5:30 pm. Tracy wants as many people to enjoy and benefit from the festival as possible, so there are also free kids activities. Tracy operates Angel’s Garden gift shop in Pensacola, a whimsical place full of unique goods that offers local artists an outlet through which to expose and sell their goods. “Pensacola is dripping with awesome artists,” said Tracy. “This festival is a great way to show them off while doing good for other people.”

canstruction IT’S BACK! The seventh edition of Canstruction in Pensacola will be revealed to the public on Gallery Night Sept. 19. Artel Gallery will play host to a series of unique structures made entirely from cans and created by local teams. Canstruction is a unique charity which hosts competitions, exhibitions and events showcasing colossal structures made entirely out of full cans of food. After the structures are built, the creations go on display to the public as a giant art exhibition. At the end of the event, all food is donated to local hunger relief organizations, and in Pensacola MANNA Food Bank will accept the cans. This year will bring a new twist to the event. In the past, structures have been built completely by teams from local architecture firms but after many queries from members of the public and other organizations looking to get involved, this year the competition was opened up to anyone who wanted to form a team. Each team will have one American Institute of Architects member who will act as a mentor. On the evening of Thursday, Sept. 18 teams will converge on Artel to build the unique sculptures using creativity and building skill to create a unique visual structure. Canstruction events take place worldwide and last year alone the events contributed 4.7 million pounds of food to hunger relief organizations. Stop by Artel Gallery to see this artistic display that will help feed the community.

In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers. By Josh Newby.
GOD HELP THE GIRL RELEASE DATE: September 5 CAST: Emily Browning, Olly Alexander, Hannah Murray DOLPHIN TALE 2 RELEASE DATE: September 12 CAST: Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Harry Connick Jr., Kris Kristofferson What I got from the preview: The team of celebrities and child actors that equipped the dolphin Winter with a prosthetic tale in the first movie find themselves contractually obligated to appear in this unnecessary sequel, in which they must play matchmaker to Winter and find her a companion so she can stay near her human friends. Protip: dolphins are totally okay living in confinement as long as it gives the humans validation and purpose. Most notable for: I shouldn’t be so harsh. Heartwarming and (according to a coworker) tear-inducing family movies are few and far between, and it’s notable that the original was popular enough to garner a sequel. Unqualified critical observation: Hey, if dolphins are so smart, why’d they agree to be in this movie? (Applause).
THE MAZE RUNNER RELEASE DATE: September 19 CAST: Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster What I got from the preview: A young boy awakens to find himself trapped in a maze with a community of other boys his age. Throughout the trailer and presumably the film, he learns more about what he must do to escape and who put him there. Think Hunger Games mixed with Lord of the Flies in a maze. Most notable for: Not much. Perhaps the only thing less risky than a comic book movie nowadays is a young adult movie set in a dystopian future. Unqualified critical observation: Friends assure me that the books were outstanding and weave an unforgettable tale of friendship, sacrifice and deception. These are the same friends that my wife assures me aren’t real, though, so don’t take their word for it. The books have also received a fair amount of praise for constructing a fictional world better than most entries in the genre. I’m holding out hope that the movie transcends its recently oversaturated genre and lives up to book-readers’ hopes.
What I got from the preview: In a trailer that seems to strangely mirror my own life, upbeat pop music plays, juxtaposed on top of abstract images, dancing, and well-dressed, good-looking young people. Who knows what this movie is about, but God help you if you think I won’t be in line opening day. Most notable for: Most movie musicals today are based on source material, from Baz Luhrmann’s cinematic vomit to Disney and Broadway adaptations. This movie takes the bold step of using original
Fi l m
music with which the audience is unfamiliar. Unqualified critical observation: I have a love for both music and the sophisticated adventures of British teenagers, two characteristics this film seems to have in spades. However, this is one of those little movies that doesn’t gain much traction in chain movie theaters, since Transformers: Age of Extinction has somehow turned all thinking humans into Michael Bay fanboys. So look for this gem at your favorite Gulf Breeze art theatre.
THE EQUALIZER RELEASE DATE: September 26 CAST: Denzel Washington, Chloe Grace-Moretz What I got from the preview: Denzel Washington plays a former black ops agent who has retired and expects to live out the rest of his days relaxing and reading Ernest Hemingway. After he sees a young girl being used and abused by the Russian mob, however, he decides to put his former training to use and bring the criminals to justice while saving the girl. Most notable for: Any movie with Denzel Washington is notable just on the merits of his presence. Other than that, though, the film seems predictable and stale. Unqualified critical observation: You may have seen this movie a few decades ago when it was called Taxi Driver. The cast and crew of this movie (the director of Training Day is also attached) signal that this may not be just a cheap rip-off, but I’m not holding my breath.
THE BOXTROLLS RELEASE DATE: September 26 CAST: Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Toni Collette What I got from the preview: In what I’m 99 percent sure is a fictional story, underground, cave-dwelling, trash-collecting boxes adopt a young orphaned boy. Man, we really need some more oversight on adoptive parenting. (Applause). As he struggles to fit in with his hosts, he learns of an evil exterminator who wants to destroy the boxtrolls, because they’re boxtrolls. He forms a resistance with them and another child in this movie based on the pretty decent book, Here Be Monsters! Most notable for: Independent animation is finally entering the mainstream, and this movie is the latest example of that, as the team behind Coraline and Paranorman reunite for this equally surreal film. Unqualified critical observation: I’m not the intended audience of this movie, which is why I just can’t get myself excited. I am, however, excited for what this movie represents, which is a dreamlike and occasionally bleak take on children’s animated film. I won’t watch it, but I can’t discourage you from watching it. downtowncrowd.com Sept 2014
