COUNCIL ON AGING OF WEST FLORIDA’S KITES ON THE COAST RETURNS FOR 2023

The Council on Aging of West Florida’s annual Kites on the Coast event will be returning to Pensacola Beach this Spring for two days of intergenerational, high-flying fun. This year marks the second annual Kites on the Coast event, which is held in support of aging adults throughout Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

The inaugural Kites on the Coast event was hosted last September by the Council on Aging of West Florida as “an opportunity to bridge the generational gap and create an intergenerational event everyone could enjoy,” according to Council on Aging of West Florida Development Manager Farrah Hale.

The festival will return to Casino Beach on Pensacola Beach March 17 from 4 pm to 10 pm and March 18 from 10 am to 4 pm. This year’s event will feature professional kite flying demonstrations, a newly added lighted night flight, numerous kites for sale, children’s activities and more.

Kites on the Coast will kick off on Friday at 4 pm, which will allow for a special new lighted night flight once dark. Organizers are looking

forward to this fun addition to this year’s festival.

“Chicago Kite will return to fly their giant kites, but this time they light up! I’m excited to see how amazing they will look next to the gulf. Last September, we couldn’t have the lighted night fly because we were still in turtle season, and the lights could misdirect mama turtles from coming ashore to lay their eggs,” Hale explained. “We love our turtles, but we wanted the lighted night fly. So, we moved the event to March.”

In addition to the night flight, there will be a variety of professional kite flying demonstrations taking place over the course of the festival. Chicago Kite will be at the event flying their larger-than-life kites which feature a variety of fun colorful characters like Snoopy, a flying pig and a gorilla. “He (Chicago Kite) has so many interesting and beautiful kites. Last year, people said they could see them all the way from Navarre,” Hale said.

SkyFX is new to this year’s event and will also host a series of showstopping kite flying demonstrations. “SkyFX performs choreographed demonstrations with their quadline stunt kites. I’ve watched their ‘warm-up’ videos and was blown

away. I can’t wait to see what they can do,” Hale said.

Throughout the two-day festival, the Council on Aging of West Florida hopes to see the sky filled with kites and invites the entire community to come out and join in the fun by bringing a kite to fly during the festival. If you want to participate in the high-flying fun but don’t have your own kite, don’t fret. There will be a variety of kites available for purchase at the event.

“I encourage everyone to bring a kite out or buy a kite at the event. If you run into a problem, the kite hospital is there to help! The kite hospital is available to help fix minor

breaks, tangles or rips. If you’re anything like me, you will become well acquainted with the kite hospital,” Hale said.

In addition to the kite-related fun, there will also be a variety of local vendors, food trucks and children’s activities. “This year we plan to include a larger kid’s activity area. We will still have the customizable paper kites for the kids, but the MESS Hall will also have their STEM activities,” Hale explained.

As with any of the Council on Aging of West Florida’s events, the proceeds from Kites on the Coast will directly help support seniors in our community.

“Kites on the Coast helps Council on Aging of West Florida serve, support, and advocate for aging adults in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. The proceeds from the event go directly to our programs like Meals on Wheels, The Retreat, Senior Dining Sites, as well as our Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent programs,” Hale explained. “The event also brings awareness to the agency and our clients. There are many vulnerable elders in our community, and all too often, society puts them and their needs on the back burner. Events like these are meant to remind us that we can make an impact despite the size of our wallets.”

Kites on the Coast 2023 is open to the public and there is no cost to attend; however, donations in support of the Council on Aging of West Florida will be accepted.

A story of love, loss and redemption, Carousel changed the face of American musical theatre when it premiered on Broadway in 1945. In a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, the swaggering carousel barker Billy Bigelow falls for sweet mill worker Julie Jordan. After they get married, Billy loses his job and Julie becomes pregnant. In a desperate attempt to support his family, Billy makes a bad decision and tragedy strikes. Billy is given a chance to make good, but is it too little too late, or will a lucky star save him and those he loves?

Called the “greatest musical of the 20th century…” by Time Magazine, Carousel is a Tony award-winning production and one of the most famous classical musicals of all time with the writing of Oscar Hammerstein II and the timeless score by Richard Rodgers including favorites “If I Loved You,” “June is Bustin’ Out All Over,” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

“Within this one piece of musical theatre, Rodgers & Hammerstein check so many boxes—energetic ensemble scenes, intimate solo and duet songs, a proper ballet— and it all kicks off with the “Carousel Waltz,” a showpiece in its own right for the orchestra. As a conductor, my biggest challenge is to keep the pace of the show right where it needs to be. Rodgers & Hammerstein were supremely focused on telling the story seamlessly through both songs and dialogue; it’s the conductor’s job to make sure this narrative flow is maintained through all of the musical numbers.

We have a strong ensemble of 26 volunteer musicians, joining our ten principal

Meet The Cast and Crew

Baritone Robert Wesley Mason returns to Pensaocl as Billy Bigelow alongside soprano Katrina Galka in her company debut as the sweet, yet naive Julie Jordan. Mezzo-soprano 2021-22 Studio Artist Imara Miles, returns to Pensacola to play Nettie Fowler, famous for singing the iconic ballad “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Local residents Sara Schoch, musical theatre professor at UWF, and Marci Duncan, actor and playwright, join us on the Saenger stage as Mrs. Mullins and the Heavenly Friend. In his opera debut, Joe Tomko fills the role of Starkeeper/Dr. Seldon. Current Studio Artists Hayley Abramowitz, Randy Ho, and Scott Lee round out the cast as Carrie Pipperidge, Enoch Snow, and Jigger Craigin.

Closing our 40th Anniversary Season, this musical of operatic proportions comes to Pensacola in a visually stunning production from Virginia Opera and set designer Erhard Rom, directed by Broadway stage director Greg Ganakas. Carousel will be helmed by newly appointed Music Director Cody Martin, leading members of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra and Pensacola Opera Chorus. ESCAMBIA COUNTY FIRST RESPONDERS COMPLETE SPECIALIZED ASAR TRAINING

From Feb. 27-March 3, the Escambia County Fire Rescue Special Operations Team completed a specialized joint training with Escambia County Animal Welfare on large animal rescues, including water rescues involving animals and humans.

On Feb. 2, 2023, the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners voted to approve the 2022 ASPCA Disaster Response Grant, which provided the Escambia County Department of Animal Welfare $50,000 for the sole purpose of obtaining equipment and training for an Animal Research and Rescue Disaster Response Team for Escambia County. With the grant, 10 Escambia County employees were trained in the following disciplines:

• Large Animal Technical Rescue

• Swift Water Technical Rescue

• Flood Water Technical Rescue

• Boat Operations

Sponsored by ECAW, specialists with focuses in law enforcement, animal control, veterinary services, state emergency management and fire rescue participated in the weeklong training that took place throughout Escambia County. Personnel came from all over the country, including one animal control officer from Belgium.

The large animal rescue training took place at Escambia County Public Safety and the Escambia County Equestrian Center. The training mainly focused on horse and cow rescues from mud, ditches and injuries where there is limited access to the animal.

The water rescue portion of the training took place at the Navy Point boat launch and

the Wilson B. Robertson boat launch on the Perdido River. During the training, the scenarios involved small animal and human rescues, with personnel performing rescues by swimming to the subjects and by utilizing a boat.

Recently, Escambia County Fire Rescue acquired two new boats for water-related rescues after receiving a $12,000 grant from the state of Florida. One boat is a 14-foot aluminum flat-bottom rescue craft with the second boat being a smaller, inflatable craft.

As a result of completing the specialized training, ECFR’s Special Operations Team received the Animal Rescue Specialist FEMA designation, meaning they are qualified to serve in times of natural disaster as a state of Florida and FEMA asset.

The specialized training marks the beginning of ECFR and Animal Welfare’s pursuit to continuously train and work together on incidents that require a joint effort.

Escambia County Fire Rescue proudly operates as a combination fire service, utilizing the talents and diversities of volunteer and career firefighting personnel. Career personnel operate in 14 stations throughout the county. 13 stations work a 48/96-hour shift, and two stations work Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteer firefighters operate out of numerous stations throughout Escambia County. Escambia County Fire Rescue also provides other emergency services such as hazardous materials response, special operations and ALS non-transport. ESCAMBIA COUNTY TO HOST FREE COASTAL PLANT GIVEAWAYS

Join Escambia County, Escambia Extension and Florida Master Gardeners for free coastal plant giveaways on Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key. The Pensacola Beach giveaway will take place on April 1from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Pensacola Beach Community Church, 920 Panferio Drive. The Perdido Key giveaway will take place on April 15 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Perdido Key Community Center, 15500 Perdido Key Drive.

The giveaways build off the successful coastal landscaping workshops which educated residents on native species and how to be use them in coastal landscapes. Species available during the giveaways include sea oats, dune sunflower, lovegrass and other coastal natives. Attendees will receive a small

grouping of several species to encourage diversity and resiliency within the coastal ecosystem. Plants are available on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last and households will be limited to one grouping. Attendees are encouraged to bring small boxes or baskets to transport plants.

This project was funded by the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program Community Grant Program.

BROWNSVILLE COMMUNITY CENTER PERFORMING LAUNCHES ARTS CLUB

The Brownsville Community Center will launch a new performing arts club beginning Tuesday, March 28. The club is open to youth ages 8-18 with an interest in acting, dancing, singing and playing music. Pre-registration is open now through March 28. “This is an exciting and fun way for youths to spend their time,” said Williams. “Our mission is to promote an appreciation and understanding of the performing arts by producing various forms of entertainment for our community and, most importantly, have fun doing it.”
