VINYL REVIVAL

Dust off that old stereo and snag your parents’ records because vinyl is back!

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), 2022 marked the sixteenth consecutive year that vinyl has continued to rise in popularity. Last year was the first year since 1987 that more vinyl records were sold than CDs. In a time where every album is digitally in the palm of our hands, this data points to the resurrection of a fading format and industry.

In anticipation of Record Store Day on April 22, we spoke with Eric Jones, owner of Pensacola’s Revolver Records, who says that vinyl’s popularity has steadily been on the rise for more than a decade “I would say vinyl dipped in the 90s and the 2000s,” Jones explained. “The teens [2013, 2014, etc.] is when it started kicking back in and it’s still going strong. We’ll see how long that lasts. It could be a bubble that bursts, or next year could bring twice what it did this year.”

In recent years, older and newer artists alike are promoting vinyl records to their fanbases. Older artists like Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones are reissuing their catalogs on vinyl, and newer artists like Billie Eilish and Harry Styles are even releasing some of their newest albums on vinyl. Fans are jumping at the chance to get the latest vinyl releases from their favorite artists.

According to the RIAA, 41 million vinyl records were sold in 2022 alone. In the past year, vinyl revenue grew 17 percent, reaching $1.2 billion in total sales. Vinyl proved to be the most popular physical music format for consumers in 2022, accounting for 71 percent of the total revenue made by any other physical music formats.

These national trends match local trends, as vinyl is also the top-selling format at Revolver Records. When asked about the shop’s recent sales, Jones said: “[Sales] have bumped up a little bit because more people are into records. Yes, there’s been an increase. Ever since I reopened Revolver in 2010, vinyl has been my bread and butter, meat and potatoes. It’s been just about all I sell.”

With all this talk about vinyl making such a big comeback, one may wonder why today’s teens and young adults are gravitating toward a format that feels outdated. After all, vinyl has been succeeded by cassettes, 8-tracks, CDs, MP3s and today’s popular streaming format. While each new format has claimed to improve the listening experience, many people still see vinyl as the best and most magical way to experience their favorite music. Three major factors contribute to the recent resurgence of vinyl records: sound, collectability and experience.

People are rediscovering (or discovering for the first time) the warm sound that vinyl has. In a world where we gravitate towards Spotify and Apple Music out of convenience, a warm and richsounding record can be a good way to take a break from the compressed and almost robotic sound of listening to music on streaming platforms. Because of the openness that vinyl has in comparison to the compressed sound of music on streaming platforms, there are sounds that one may hear on the vinyl version of the album that get lost in the digital version.

In addition to the richness of vinyl, many older (and some new) records sound better on vinyl because they were mastered to be listened to on vinyl. For example, since Spotify did not exist in the 1960s, the Beatles mixed their

records with the intention of consumers listening to the finished product on vinyl. Because the artist’s intention was to have the album played on a turntable, it sounds better on a turntable.

Another major factor contributing to the recent increase in vinyl sales is the collectability aspect of vinyl records. Today, vinyl comes in so many varieties— it is pressed with different colors, glitter inside of it, a splattered effect, different shapes, etc. While it was possible to press funky-colored and patterned vinyl in the 70s and 80s, it was much less common. Since vinyl was the standard format for listening to music back then, the appearance of the record did not matter much to the consumer. If the record played music, the product was good. These fun varieties have created an aesthetic aspect to collecting records.

Several artists are cashing in on the collectability aspect of the vinyl craze. Most recently, American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift released four editions of her latest album Midnights on vinyl. Each of the four editions featured a different colored record and different album art. When a fan purchases all four albums, they can lay out the records with the back covers facing up to connect the back cover art, which makes a clock. The funny thing about the four records is apart from the different colored records and the different cover art, the track listing and music is the exact same on all four copies of the album.

Swift is the prime example of an artist who understands the collectability aspect of the vinyl craze. She essentially sold the same album four times. Swift not only made this smart marketing move to sell more records, but she also sold a kit that allows fans to wallmount each of the records and place moving clock hands in the center. This

WHAT IS RECORD STORE DAY?

Vinyl has made such a comeback that there is even a holiday centered around the idea of collecting—Record Store Day (RSD). RSD is a biannual day-long event that celebrates the independentlyowned record stores that supply local communities and keep the love of vinyl alive and spinning.

RSD was first held on April 19, 2008. Since then, the event has grown into the worldwide phenomenon it is today. RSD draws people out to independent record stores to shop exclusive titles and mingle with fellow vinyl lovers. If a record store chooses to participate in RSD, they can receive exclusive RSD titles from large and small artists alike.

In addition to exclusive titles, record stores have other fun things on RSD. Many shops offer promotional items like posters, tote bags, and pins showcasing featured artists and sponsors of RSD. Some shops even offer customers live music and refreshments to keep them entertained while they browse.

Each year, RSD is celebrated on the third Saturday of April and on Black Friday. This year’s RSD celebration date of April 22 is fastly approaching. A few local shops that participate in Record Store Day and receive exclusive RSD titles are Music Box, Revolver Records and if you’re up for a drive, Dr. Music in Fairhope, AL.

type of collectability is what many new vinyl fans crave; they want something that looks as good as it sounds. Many people are purchasing and collecting

vinyl only for its physical aesthetic, and not to listen to it. According to Billboard, nearly half of the people who purchase vinyl records do not own an actual record player.

The physical ritual of vinyl also plays into another contributor to vinyl’s resurgence—the experience. Many people are falling in love with vinyl because of the experience they get all the way from buying an album to taking it home and enjoying it. The vinyl experience often starts with browsing the selection at a local record store. Flicking through stacks of albums and finding something unique is exciting. It is equally exciting to look at all the details hidden in the cover art—something that isn’t possible with a tiny album image on a screen.

When the time to play the album finally comes, it is exciting to drop the needle on the record and be immersed in the warm sound seeping out of the speakers. Listening to an album all the way through and hearing the songs on an album in their intended order creates a complete experience. From browsing through thousands of records at a record store, to hearing the last track on an album, people are enjoying the distinct experience that vinyl provides.

The vinyl revival has been kindled by fans who want to seek out albums, admire the physical art of an album cover, and enjoy the warm sounds of their favorite artist— an experience that streaming can never provide. Perhaps this unique experience is why vinyl is still on fire after all these years and other formats. “Vinyl is more popular maybe than it was a year or two ago, but that doesn’t mean it was ever unpopular,” Jones explained. “There’s always been a strong market for vinyl. It’s stronger now but even at its lowest point, vinyl was never really dead.” ■

ECFR’S RAY MELTON RECOGNIZED AS A 2022 EXEMPLARY PUBLIC SERVANT

Escambia County Fire Rescue is pleased to announce that Fire and Life Specialist Ray Melton was selected as one of American City & County’s 2022 Exemplary Public Services for his dedication to fire prevention and education in Escambia County. American City and County, a local and state government news agency, publicly made the announcement on Monday, April 10.

Ray Melton’s interest in the fire service began when he was five years old when firefighters saved his life after he became sick and stopped breathing. After joining the Army at 17 as a finance specialist, he transferred to a firefighting position when the opportunity became available.

In 2016, Melton discovered his passion for fire prevention, but it came with tragedy. On an early Thursday morning, four children lost their lives in Pensacola after a water heater shorted out, causing a deadly fire. From there, Melton knew he had to do something.

Following the tragedy, Melton has worked to make sure another deadly incident like that would never happen again. While with ECFR, Melton has implemented a number of effective and innovative fire prevention programs, such as the county’s “Ready, Set, Go” wildland-urban interface education initiative, where he partners with local forestry personnel to host educational programs with urban communities that could be affected by wildfires.

Last year, Melton started the home fire safety program. The program is an oppor-

tunity for Escambia County residents to request to have their homes inspected for any potential fire hazards, such as exposed wiring, burned electrical outlets and nonfunctioning smoke detectors. Since then, Melton has inspected numerous Escambia County homes and identified several potential fire hazards, leading to preventative maintenance in those homes.

“My seven years with ECFR have been very rewarding in that we have saved lives through education,” said Melton. “The greatest rewards come when I get feedback from our citizens who explain how grateful they are for our implemented programs that bring fire safety to them on a personal level or when they tell me that after we installed alarms in their home, the alarms saved their life. Bringing awareness to a personal level lets our citizens know we truly care about them and even though we will not prevent many fires, the awareness we bring to their homes will save lives.”

If you want a courtesy fire safety inspection for your home, contact Ray Melton at remelton@myescambia.com or call (850) 471-6525.

ECFR is available to provide and install smoke detectors free of charge for residents. For information about obtaining a home smoke detector, call 850-595-HERO (4376) or request a smoke detector online through Ask MyEscambia. City of Pensacola residents may call 850-436-5200 for smoke detector installation assistance.

“STEVE” BODE RETIRES AFTER 32 YEARS OF SERVICE

HIGHER LOAN INTEREST RATES EYED

TALLAHASSEE — Florida lawmakers are considering a proposal that would allow interest rates as high as 36 percent on consumerfinance loans, with supporters saying it would increase access to loans and opponents arguing it would hurt poor people.

The House State Administration & Technology Appropriations Subcommittee on Wednesday voted 10-3 to approve the proposal (HB 1267), which would replace a system that includes maximum interest rates of 30 percent. A Senate version of the bill (SB 580) began moving forward in late March.

House sponsor Juan Alfonso Fernandez-Barquin, R-Miami-Dade County, said the state has a large number of “unbanked” residents who have difficulty getting loans. He said that leads many people to turn to online lenders who charge far-higher rates than consumer-finance businesses in Florida.

Fernandez-Barquin said allowing a maximum interest rate to 36 percent would broaden “the base of risk” for consumerfinance companies, allowing more people to qualify for loans.

“There’s a whole segment of the population right now that wouldn’t qualify for these loans right now,” Fernandez-Barquin said. “If we increase the interest rates, they can qualify for them.”

But Rep. Russell Meyer, executive director of the Florida Council of Churches, described a 36 percent interest rate as “usury” that would take advantage of poor people who need help in paying living expenses.

“What this does is charge people rent on living, rent on breathing, rent on feeding the children,” Meyer told the House panel. “And every religious tradition has considered that immoral.”

Rep. Angie Nixon, D-Jacksonville, described a maximum interest rate of 36 percent as “predatory.”

APPEALS COURT URGED TO SHIELD AHCA CHIEF

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration is asking a federal appeals court to shield a top health official from having to testify in a legal challenge to a rule prohibiting Medicaid coverage of gender-affirming care for transgender people. Lawyers for Florida Agency for Health Care Administration Secretary Jason Weida went to the 11th U.S, Circuit Court of Appeals this week after U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle rejected a request to prevent Weida from being deposed by plaintiffs’ attorneys. Seeking what is known as a writ of mandamus from the Atlanta-based appeals court, the state’s lawyers argued that Weida should not have to testify because he is a high-ranking official. “Secretary Weida’s schedule is demanding. He oversees over 1,500 employees, and the largest budget of any state agency. He’s particularly busy now that the Florida Legislature is in session and debating laws concerning agency priorities (including the agency’s budget for the next fiscal year),” the state’s lawyers wrote. Before his appointment as secretary this year, Weida was the agency’s assistant deputy secretary

LAWMAKERS LOOK TO EXPAND

KIDCARE ELIGIBILITY

The state Senate and House are moving forward with a plan that is expected to lead to thousands of additional children receiving subsidized health-insurance coverage through the KidCare program. The Senate Health and Human Services Appropriations Committee on Wednesday approved its version of the bill (SB 246), filed by Sen. Alexis Calatayud, R-Miami. The full House is scheduled to take up its version (HB 121) on Thursday. Under KidCare, families who do not qualify for Medicaid can pay $15 or $20 a month in premiums to insure children.

Subsidized coverage is available to families with incomes up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level, or about $60,000 for a family of four, according to a House staff analysis. The bills would increase that threshold to 300 percent of the federal poverty level. The

“Thirty-six percent interest rate?” she said.

“That is wild to me.”

But Scott Jenkins, a lobbyist who is executive director of the Florida Financial Services Association, pushed back against the “predatory” assertion, telling House members it is “a complete misnomer to get you guys fired up, basically.”

Under current law, Florida has a threetier system of interest rates for consumerfinance loans. Companies can charge 30 percent annual interest on the first $3,000 of principal amounts, 24 percent on amounts between $3,000 and $4,000 and 18 percent on amounts between $4,000 and $25,000. The bill would set an across-the-board maximum annual 36 percent rate.

Fernandez-Barquin said some of the loans are secured by property, while others are not.

The bill also would increase regulations on consumer-finance companies, including requiring that they submit annual reports to the state detailing loan data.

Elizabeth Hammond, vice president of governmental affairs for Mariner Finance and a former North Carolina regulator, said the bill would open loans to people who don’t qualify under the current structure and would boost competition in the market.

“This will bring additional competition to Florida, and that’s good for consumers,” Hammond told the House panel. “The more competition that’s there, the more that we compete against each other and the more that the customer gets a good, competitive rate instead of having to go online.”

But Karen Woodall, executive director of the Florida Center for Fiscal & Economic Policy, questioned how people could afford loans at a higher interest rate if they can’t qualify at the current rates.

“This is a significant increase in interest rate on consumers that are already financially vulnerable,” Woodall said.

RECORDS EXEMPTION COULD SHIELD MANSION GUESTS

TALLAHASSEE --- The names of certain guests at the governor’s mansion would not be disclosed to the public under Senate and House bills that also would shield travel records of the governor and other state leaders.

In party-line votes Tuesday, the Republican-controlled Senate Rules Committee and House Judiciary Committee approved the bills (SB 1616 and HB 1495), positioning them to go to the full Senate and House.

The bills would create a public-records exemption involving information held by lawenforcement agencies related to “security or transportation services” provided to the governor, the governor’s immediate family, the lieutenant governor, Cabinet members, the House speaker, the Senate president and the chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court.

The exemption also would apply to other people if requested by the governor or other state leaders for security reasons. The exemption would be retroactive to trips already taken.

“There could be situations where the governor comes to various parts of Florida, whether it’s to present a bill or to meet with constituents, but that information is out there for public-records requests, and that information could then --- with enough digging, and enough time and enough effort --- might be able to get the security profile of that structure,” House bill sponsor Jeff Holcomb, R-Spring Hill, said.

Rep. Mike Gottlieb, D-Davie, unsuccessfully tried to limit the exemption by allowing

UNION RESTRICTIONS HEAD TO FULL HOUSE

for Medicaid policy and Medicaid quality at a time when it developed a rule that blocked payments to health-care providers for treatments such as puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgeries for transgender people. The state’s lawyers have cited what is known as the “apex doctrine,” which is designed to shield high-ranking officials from testifying if information can be obtained in other ways. But Hinkle on Friday ruled that Weida has “relevant, indeed significant, information not available from other sources” and ordered him to be deposed before April 21. A trial in the case is scheduled to begin May 9. A group of plaintiffs filed a lawsuit in September challenging the rule. The plaintiffs’ attorneys have clashed with the agency’s lawyers, who balked at releasing documents and other information. While some records have been protected from public scrutiny, others show that Weida was an architect of a key report and was instrumental in the creation of the rule. The plaintiffs’ lawyers have argued that Weida “was the face of the antitransgender push, controlling the organization’s messaging” and “personally chose” experts who contributed to the report supporting the agency’s decision to stop Medicaid payments for gender-affirming care.

With the Senate already giving approval, a controversial proposal that would place new restrictions on public-employee unions is ready to go to the full House. The House State Affairs Committee on Tuesday approved the House version of the proposal (HB 1445), sponsored by Rep. Dean Black, R-Jacksonville. The bill would make a series of changes, such as preventing dues from being deducted from most workers’ paychecks. The restrictions would not apply to unions representing

DESANTIS SIGNS WILDLIFE CORRIDOR EXPANSION

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday signed a bill that will direct $200 million to help link hiking and biking trails to a planned statewide wildlife corridor. A priority of Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, the bill (SB 106) will expand Florida’s Greenways and Trails System and the SUN Trail Network with the wildlife corridor. The corridor is envisioned as connecting 18 million acres of land from the Florida Keys to the Panhandle. “I envision Florida’s wildlife corridor as a top destination for recreational tourists from

records to be released after each trip.

“Therefore, we would still be protecting the security integrity,” Gottlieb said.

The Senate and House committees Tuesday added proposals to prevent disclosure of information related to mansion security operations, including information about screenings and clearances.

Senate sponsor Jonathan Martin, R-Fort Myers, said only the names of guests attending the mansion outside of government duties would be shielded from public disclosure.

“It’s not every guest to the governor’s mansion,” Martin said. “It’s guests that are visiting him privately for non-governmentrelated purposes --- similar to you or myself inviting somebody to our home.”

Martin said last month the bill was drafted because of an increase in “publicrecords requests regarding our governor and his travel simply because of the notoriety of his position in the past few years.”

Holcomb said the proposal wouldn’t affect disclosure of the taxpayer expenses related to any trip.

A Florida Department of Law Enforcement annual report outlining costs of protecting Gov. Ron DeSantis, his family, the governor’s mansion and visiting dignitaries showed taxpayers spent $6.097 million on such security in the 2021-2022 fiscal year, up 25 percent from the previous year.

While most of the expenses involved protecting DeSantis, the report noted protective services also were provided to the governors of 27 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

law-enforcement officers, correctional officers and firefighters. Union members from across the state spoke against the bill Tuesday. The proposal has moved forward after the Florida Education Association teachers union was a key backer of Democrat Charlie Crist’s unsuccessful bid last year to unseat Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. “There’s no problem to be fixed,,” Rep. Robin Bartleman, D-Weston, said Tuesday. “This is vindictive and a mean bill.” But Black said the bill will increase transparency and accountability and ultimately help workers and unions. “There is nothing to fear in this bill,” he said. The Senate voted 23-17 on March 29 to pass its version of the bill (SB 256).

across the country and around the world,” Passidomo said in a prepared statement. “As I have said before, I believe this will be Florida’s Central Park --- a legacy we can be proud to leave for future generations of Floridians and visitors to enjoy.” In addition to providing a one-time $200 million chunk of money, the new law will increase from $25 million to $50 million the annual amount of vehicleregistration fees funneled to the SUN Trail Network. A Senate news release said trail projects within the wildlife corridor attempt to use previously disturbed lands, such as abandoned roads and railroads, utility rightsof-way, canal corridors and drainage berms and permanent fire lines.

proposals come as many families will be dropped in the coming months from Medicaid because of the end of a “public health emergency” that the federal government declared in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic began. As part of the emergency, Washington agreed to pick up more of the tab for Medicaid, which is jointly funded by states and the federal government. In exchange for the extra money, states had to agree that they wouldn’t drop people from the Medicaid rolls during the emergency. Florida’s Medicaid program has grown from nearly 3.8 million beneficiaries in January 2020 to about 5.75 million beneficiaries last month, at least in part because people who might not otherwise be eligible for coverage could not be dropped.

The KidCare program also receives federal funding as part of what is known as the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Senate Health and Human Services Appropriations Chairwoman Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart, called the proposed eligibility expansion “a great step forward for our children and our families.”

SENATE AIDS MILITARY MEMBERS IN HIGHER ED

The Senate on Tuesday passed a measure aimed at helping transition military members and their dependents into higher education.

The bill (SB 732) would establish the “Collegiate Purple Star Campuses” program. Under the program, participating colleges, univer-

led transition program that assists military students in transitioning” into the schools. They also would have to offer professional development to staff members on issues related to students with military backgrounds, designate a staff member as a “military liaison” and maintain a web page to inform the students and their families about resources.

The program would require the State Board of Education and the state university system’s Board of Governors to adopt rules to carry out the program. An identical bill (HB 845)
