MAKE EVERY DAY E ARTH DAY LOCAL WAYS TO MAKE AN IMPACT YEAR-ROUND

S

by Morgan Cole

ince the first Earth Day was celebrated in the United States in 1970, it has grown to become the world’s largest environmental movement and is observed in more than 200 countries across the globe. With Earth Day just around the corner, there’s no better time than now to show some appreciation for mother earth and commit to making changes, no matter how big or small, to help protect the planet and its valuable resources for ourselves and generations to come. Although we encourage you to participate in the many Earth Day festivities occurring throughout the city, we’ve also rounded up some other ways for you to make a hands-on difference right here in our local community not just on Earth Day, but year-round. Convert to Solar Energy

Consider converting to a clean energy source by going solar! The up-front cost associated with converting to solar energy often deters individuals from taking advantage of its many benefits. Thankfully non-profit organization Solar United, has recently launched a solar co-op program to help offset the cost for those wanting to go solar. The co-op is free to join and allows groups of property owners to purchase the equipment and use solar power at discounted group rate. Visit coops.solarunitedneighbors.org to learn more about the benefits of going solar and for details on joining the new co-op program by attending one of the community information sessions. Visit Your Neighborhood Farmers Market

On an individual level, you can help support both our local environment and economy by shopping at your neighborhood farmer’s market or grocery co-op. Check out the Palafox Market in downtown Pensacola. Held weekly on Saturdays, this neighborhood farmers market features numerous local vendors selling a variety of products from fresh produce, live plants and natural beauty products to baked goods, fine art and more. Bailey’s Produce and Nursery and The Farm Pensacola Produce Nursery also offer up delicious farm-fresh and organic goods, along with a variety of daily specials, so be sure to follow them on social media. Both are open daily. Participate in a Local Cleanup

There are numerous local organizations that host monthly cleanups at various locations throughout the community. Ocean Hour Florida hosts local beach and waterway cleanups on Saturdays each week and is always seeking volunteers. For information and to sign up for

one of their upcoming beach cleanups, visit oceanhourfl.com. The City of Pensacola also partners with local environmental groups and organizations to host a variety of community cleanup events throughout the year. Through partnership with the Scenic Highway Foundation, Ocean Hour and Earth Ethics, the City hosts a series of community cleanups at the Bay Bluffs and Chimney Park (Scenic Hwy.) in Pensacola on the second Saturday of each month. The City also partners with Keep Pensacola Beautiful and Ocean Hour to host clean up days along the shores of Bruce Beach in downtown Pensacola on the last Saturday of each month. Visit cityofpensacola.com/calendar, or cityofpensacola.com/570/ Volunteer to check out the full calendar of upcoming cleanups dates. Other cleanup opportunities are available through the Pensacola & Perdido Bays Estuary Program and Healthy Gulf. Check out each of their websites or follow them on social media for more information and to find out how to get involved. Try Going Zero(ish) Waste

Check out Pensacola’s first zero waste store, Ziro Supply Co., located on Palafox Street in downtown Pensacola. Ziro Supply is a zero waste and refill shop offering sustainable alternatives to everyday goods that are healthy for you and for our planet. The concept is simple— weigh, f ill and pay. Bring your own sanitized container, purchase one of their recyclable containers or use one of the available upcycled jars for free. Choose the product you’d like to fill up on and then, have your filled container weighed at the counter and voila, you’re ready to check out. Ziro Supply also offers an assortment of ecofriendly household products in eco-friendly packaging such as toilet paper, paper towels and

laundry powder. For more information, visit zirosupply.com or check them out on Facebook @ZiroSupply. Join a Local Green Committee

Initiate or become a member of a group dedicated to taking action on environmental issues important to our community. There are a number of environmental-based activist groups to get involved with right here in Pensacola. One local group is 850eco, an environmentallyconscious community group that’s dedicated to co-creating a greener Pensacola through education, political action, volunteering and outdoor recreation. The group hosts various eco-centered activities and events throughout the year for like-minded individuals to connect, discuss, share ideas, learn and take action on environmental issues affecting our community. Follow @850eco on Instagram for more information and to view their full calendar of upcoming meeting dates. Another group to check out is 350 Pensacola, which is the local affiliate of 350.org, one of the largest nonprofit organizations fighting climate change both globally and locally. 350 Pensacola is dedicated to educating the public on the need to take action to reduce carbon emissions and to influence local governments to adopt and implement policies to reduce their own carbon emissions, while also encouraging and supporting local citizens in their efforts to do the same. To learn more about 350 Pensacola and how to get involved, visit world.350.org/pensacola. Order Takeout From a Local Restaurant That Supports the Eco-To-Go Program

Launched by Keep Pensacola Beautiful, Eco-To-Go is a local restaurant sustainability program. The program is designed to unite Pensacola restaurants against

the threat of litter, waste and single-use plastics through the implementation of eco-friendly take out containers. Pensacola’s tourism economy is dependent on the environment we cultivate. As a result of COVID-19, there has been an influx of to-go materials being used by restaurants, which has led to a spike in waste. Through the Eco-To-Go program, KPB hopes to encourage the community to think greener and strives to help make using sustainable materials a common practice. Local restaurants currently participating in the Eco-To-Go program include Perfect Plain, East Hill Market and Restaurant, Cafe Single Fin, The Daily Squeeze and more. Visit keeppensacolabeautiful.org/eco-to-go/ for complete program details and the list of participating restaurants. Volunteer Your Time with Keep Pensacola Beautiful

This local non-profit organization is dedicated to providing education and resources for sustained community improvement through educational outreach programs, volunteer opportunities throughout Escambia County. In addition to hosting annual fundraisers, special events, beach and neighborhood cleanups, recycling programs and more, Keep Pensacola Beautiful (KPB) is also a participant of the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup (GAC). Held annually, the GAC is a national cleanup event that takes place in more than 600 communities each spring, from March through May. Engaging more than five million volunteers each year across the nation, the

GAC is the largest community improvement program in America. You can get involved with the Great American Cleanup throughout the month of April by recycling your plastic bags at one of the many Bag Swap events taking place at different locations throughout the city. From cleanup events to assisting with their annual fundraisers, KPB offers a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the year. The organization will also provide you and your group with the resources and necessary supplies to organize and conduct your very own beach cleanup. Visit keeppensacolabeautiful.org for more information on programs, upcoming events and ways to get involved. “Take a Plant, Leaf a Plant” at a Plant Library or Attend a Plant Swap

Although plant swap groups have existed through social media platforms like Facebook for years, plant libraries have become a relatively new concept in our community. Pensacola and its surrounding communities are home to the Emerald Coast Plant Libraries, which consists of more than 30 plant libraries. When visiting a plant library, the rule of thumb is to take a plant and leave a plant. This concept was launched by Angela Blake, a local who was inspired by plant libraries she had seen in other cities. Plant libraries now exist in neighborhoods ranging from Fort Walton Beach all the way to Pensacola. Follow @EmeraldCoastPlantLibraries on Facebook for more on starting your own plant library and for the complete list of plant library locations. •

Funds were raised during the 22nd Annual Friends of the NMCRS Charity Golf Tournament held at Scenic Hills Country Club in Pensacola, FL. To date, the local community has helped raise more than $550,000 to further the mission of NMCRS at Naval Air Station Pensacola. For twenty-two years, the credit union has hosted an annual charity golf tournament to raise funds on behalf of the society who is unable to solicit their own funding. The Pensacola society is highly ranked in the nation for receiving the most financial support by its community. “Pen Air plays a vital role as a community partner supporting Pensacola’s military families,” says Joy Barnes, Director for the local Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. “Thanks to the generous support of Pen Air Federal Credit Union, the Navy-Marine Corps. Relief Society can provide much needed financial assistance and education to our service members in their desperate times of need.”

The funds given will be used to support the emergency f inancial needs of our local military and help fund programs like the Visiting Nurse Program in addition to Quick Assistance Loans, Budget for Baby Workshops, Emergency Travel Loans, Education Assistance, Health Education and PostCombat Support, Disaster Relief and Financial Assistance and Counseling. “Pen Air is honored to remain a strong community partner of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society,” says Delbert Lee Morgan, President and CEO for Pen Air Federal Credit Union. “We’re proud to host the 22nd Annual Friends of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Charity Golf Tournament. UWF SINGERS PRESENT ‘SONGS OF SURVIVAL’ The University of West Florida’s Dr. Grier Williams School of Music is proud to sponsor the UWF Singers as they present “Songs of Survival” on Thursday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rolfs Music Hall at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82 on the Pensacola campus. The concert will feature two contrasting works from 1943, at the height of WWII. The first being a collection of songs for “vocal orchestra” by Margaret Dryburgh and Norah Chambers who composed the songs while in captivity on the island of Sumatra during the Japanese invasion (“Songs of Survival”). Some of these compositions were written on scraps of paper or soup can labels. The comforting presence of music provided the purpose of living during horrendous conditions.

The second large work featured is Benjamin Britten’s “Rejoice in the Lamb.” A known pacifist, Britten composed this work in 1943, around the same time Norah and Margaret were creating their chorus a hemisphere away. The peculiar poetry comes from Christopher Smart whose pen names were Mrs. Mary Midnight, and Ebenezer Pentweazle. Supportive works include pieces by Gregorio Allegri, W. A. Mozart, Darius Lim, Cynthia Erivo, John Lennon, Sam Pottle, Michael Barrett, Moses Hogan and Leonard Bernstein. This event is free and open to the public but tickets are required. CITY OF PENSACOLA RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED BUDGET PRESENTATION AWARD FOR 32ND CONSECUTIVE YEAR The Government Finance Officers Association has awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the City of Pensacola Financial Services Department for its Fiscal Year 2021 Budget, marking the city’s 32nd consecutive year receiving the award. The Distinguished Budget Presentation award represents a significant achievement by the City of Pensacola. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the city had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as: • A policy document • A financial plan • An operations guide • A communications device Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and the 14 mandatory criteria within these categories to receive the award. GFOA also awarded the City of Pensacola the Certificate of Achieve-

ment for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the city’s Fiscal Year 2020 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, marking the 41st year the city has received the award. “The City of Pensacola works diligently to maintain a balanced, fiscally responsible budget to meet the needs of our citizens, so it is exciting to see our Financial Services staff be recognized with these awards,” Mayor Grover Robinson said. “This is a testament to the continuous hard work and dedication of our staff as they are recognized for the 32nd and 41st consecutive year.” There are over 1,600 participants in the Budget Awards Program. The most recent Budget Award recipients, along with their corresponding budget documents, are posted quarterly on GFOA’s website. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America. Capitol News

FEW SPECIFICS PROVIDED ON TEXTBOOK REJECTIONS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA RYAN DAILEY TALLAHASSEE — After a high-profile announcement Friday about rejecting math textbooks submitted for adoption by the state, Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Education are providing few details about how the books violated state academic standards. The Department of Education on Friday said the books did not make an initial adoption list because they included “prohibited topics” or were inconsistent with state standards. The department said 54 of 132 submitted textbooks, or 41 percent, were rejected. “Reasons for rejecting textbooks included references to Critical Race Theory (CRT), inclusions of Common Core and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics,” a news release from the department said. But the news release, which was titled, “Florida Rejects Publishers’ Attempts to Indoctrinate Students,” did not provide examples of questions or other details that would show why the books were rejected. Democrats have alleged political motivations as DeSantis tries to appeal to conservative voters. Critical race theory is based on the premise that racism is embedded in American institutions, and has been a target of DeSantis, state legislative leaders and other Republicans across the country. Social and emotional learning is a set of processes by which students learn to do things such as manage emotions, “feel and show empathy for others” and maintain relationships, according to the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments, which is funded by the U.S Department of Education. DeSantis introduced the state’s Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking Standards, or BEST Standards, in 2020. The governor billed the new education guidelines as a replacement for the politically unpopular Common Core standards that were used in the past in Florida. Textbooks for kindergarten through fifth-grade students were rejected at the highest rate, with 71 percent of materials turned away. “It seems that some publishers attempted to slap a coat of paint on an old house built on the foundation of Common Core, and indoctrinating concepts like race essentialism, especially, bizarrely, for elementary school students,” DeSantis said in the Friday news release. Asked Monday for specifics about

POLL ON SPECIAL SESSION FALLS SHORT NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, didn’t get enough support from lawmakers by a Monday deadline to force a special legislative session on property insurance. But Gov. Ron DeSantis separately announced he will call a special session. With Brandes needing support from 24 senators and 72 House members to spur a session, only 17 senators and 69 House members even responded to a poll by a noon deadline. Of those voting, 17 senators supported a special session, while one senator opposed it. Meanwhile, 48 House members supported a session, while four were opposed. Most of the support came from Democrats. The Department of State announced the vote tally after DeSantis earlier Monday said he will call a special session in May to address problems in the property-insurance system that have led to homeowners losing coverage and

how the rejected textbooks violated state standards in those three categories, DeSantis said he would like for that information to be made public but he “respects the process” that has kept the education department from releasing it. “I would say, one, talk to the Department of Education for more background on it. What they have told me is that there is an appeal process that the textbook publishers can go through. And right now, what’s in their textbooks is considered proprietary information. So, I would be perfectly fine with doing that. That’s just not been their standard of practice. And it’s not because they don’t want to release, it’s just because these are textbooks and this is how they do it,” DeSantis told reporters during an appearance in Jacksonville. The Department of Education did not provide specifics on why the textbooks were rejected when asked Monday by The News Service of Florida. The department in an email provided information about the textbook adoption process and confirmed that textbook companies can appeal the rejections. But the Democratic Governors Association on Monday called for the state to release information about the rejections. “DeSantis’ silence on the specifics of his divisive and dangerous book ban makes it clear it’s just another one of his crusades to further his own political ambitions,” a news release from the association said. Free-speech organization PEN America said the education department’s rejection of the books “raises serious concerns” about why the decisions were made. “The Florida Department of Education’s rejection of 41 percent of math textbooks submitted to the state — including 71 percent of textbooks for grades K-5 — on the grounds that they include ‘references to critical race theory’ or ‘social emotional learning’ demonstrates how broadly ‘educational gag orders’ can be wielded against a range of educational materials, and raises serious concerns about whether these decisions are being made based on pedagogy or politics,” Jeremy Young, senior manager of PEN America’s Free Expression and Education program, said in a statement. But DeSantis on Monday defended the state’s rejection of the math textbooks. “First, it doesn’t meet the standards. But second, you know, math is about getting the right answer. And we want kids to learn to think so they get the right answer. It’s not about how you feel about the problem,” the governor said.

getting hit with large rate increases. DeSantis did not immediately specify the dates for the session. Brandes used the polling procedure to try to force a special session after the House and Senate could not reach agreement during this year’s regular legislative session on property-insurance changes. Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, and Sen. Ed Hooper, R-Clearwater, were the only Republican senators to join Brandes in voting in the poll for a special session. Sen. Tom Wright, R-New Smyrna Beach, cast the lone Senate vote against the session. In the House, Republicans Linda Chaney of St. Pete Beach, Tom Fabricio of Miramar, Elizabeth Fetterhoff of DeLand, Blaise Ingoglia of Spring Hills, Sam Killebrew of Winter Haven, and Anthony Sabatini of Howie-in-the-Hills joined 42 Democrats in supporting the proposal. All four House votes against the session came from Republicans: James Buchanan of Osprey, Traci Koster of Tampa, Ralph Massullo of Lecanto, and Cyndi Stevenson of Saint Johns.

JUDGE REJECTS TRANSPORTATION MASK MANDATE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA JIM SAUNDERS TALLAHASSEE — A Florida federal judge on Monday struck down a requirement that travelers wear masks in airports and on planes, trains and buses, saying the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention overstepped its authority as it tried to prevent the spread of COVID-19. U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, who is based in Tampa, issued a 59-page decision that sided with the Health Freedom Defense Fund and two individual plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed last year. Mizelle wrote, in part, that the mask requirement exceeded the CDC’s authority under a law known as the Public Health Services Act and refuted an argument by federal attorneys that the requirement was a legal “sanitation” measure. “The government interprets ‘sanitation’ and ‘other measures’ to include traditional techniques that impede the spread of disease,” Mizelle wrote. “One definition it relies upon is even broader, defining ‘sanitation’ as the ‘applying of measures for preserving and promoting public health.’ If Congress intended this definition, the power bestowed upon the CDC would be breathtaking. And it certainly would not be limited to modest measures of ‘sanitation’ like masks.” Mizelle also ruled that the CDC violated the federal Administrative Procedure Act, in part because it did not give the public proper time to review and comment on the mask rule before it was put in place. Also, she wrote that the requirement was “arbitrary and capricious” because the CDC didn’t adequately explain its reasoning. “The mandate does not address alternative (or supplementary) requirements to masking, such as testing, temperature checks or occupancy limits in transit hubs and conveyances,” wrote Mizelle, who was appointed to the federal bench by former President Donald Trump. “It

HOUSE CANDIDATES EMERGE IN DUVAL, MIAMI-DADE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF With qualifying less than two months away, additional candidates have emerged for state House races in Duval and Miami-Dade counties, while Rep. Tae Edmonds, D-West Palm Beach, has formally launched his re-election bid. Jacksonville Beach Republican Chet Stokes opened a campaign account Monday in a newly redrawn House District 16 in southeastern Duval County, according to the state Divi-

AVERAGE PRICE AT PUMP DIPS TO $4 NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Florida’s average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $4 on Monday, continuing a steady decline after hitting a record of $4.38 last month, according to the AAA auto club. The Monday total was down from $4.07 a week earlier. It also was the lowest price since Russia invaded Ukraine, spurring sanctions against Russia’s energy sector. But AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said gas prices could increase again. “Gas

also does not explain why all masks — homemade and medical-grade — are sufficient.” It was not immediately clear whether the federal government would appeal the decision. White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki called the ruling a “disappointing decision” and said it is being reviewed by the Department of Homeland Security and the CDC. “We’re continuing to recommend people wear masks,” Psaki said. The ruling came five days after the federal Transportation Security Administration, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, extended the mask requirement to May 3. The requirement had been scheduled to expire Monday. In a statement Wednesday about the extension, the Transportation Security Administration pointed to increased COVID-19 cases, particularly involving the BA.2 subvariant of the coronavirus. “Since early April 2022, there have been increases in the 7-day moving average of COVID-19 cases in the United States,” the statement said. “During the 15-day extension period, CDC will assess the potential impact the recent rise of COVID-19 cases has on severe disease, including hospitalizations, deaths, and health care system capacity.” The ruling also came less than three weeks after Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, joined by attorneys general from 20 other states, filed a similar lawsuit in federal court in Tampa. That case is pending. Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has battled the Biden administration over COVID19 issues, praised Mizelle’s decision. “Great to see a federal judge in Florida follow the law and reject the Biden transportation mask mandate.
