Acupuncture is shown to effec tively help with nausea caused by chemotherapy, dental pain after surgery, addiction, head aches, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofas cial pain and much more. Five Points Acupuncture, Emerald Coast Acupuncture Clinic and Blue Meridian Acupuncture and Wellness are just a few of the many options located within the Pensacola area.

Infrared Sauna Love the benefits of a sauna but don’t love the intense heat that a sauna provides? An infra red sauna may be the perfect option for you. Unlike a tradi tional sauna, infrared saunas do not heat the air within the space; instead, they use infrared lamps that emit electromagnetic radia tion to warm the body directly. Although infrared saunas still operate at temperatures that can range between 120 F and 140 F, users often claim that the heat penetrates more deeply into the body creating a more intense sweat at a lower temper ature than typical saunas. The medically supported benefits of infrared saunas are similar to those experienced with a tradi tional sauna: better sleep, relax ation, detoxification, weight loss, relief from sore muscles, relief from joint pain, clear and tighter skin and improved circulation. If you are thinking about giving infrared a try, Stay The Spa, located in downtown Pensacola, offers clients the use of their infrared sauna. They suggest planning a massage or facial before or after the heat therapy for complete relaxation.

Massage Therapy Massage therapy is on the rise and is becoming widely accepted as a means to cope with both pain and stress. A massage therapist manipu lates the soft tissue of the body (muscle, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and skin) using varying degrees of pres sure in order to release knots and tension. A typical full body massage involves laying flat on a massage table or bed while the massage therapist begins at the head and scalp and works their way down the body from the neck and shoulders to the legs, feet and, eventually, back. Massages are often custom izable and can be tailored to focus on certain areas of the body suffering from acute pain. A few of the major bene fits of massage therapy include reduced stress and increased relaxation, reduced pain and muscle soreness, improved circulation, lowered heart rate and blood pressure and improved immune function. There are a multitude of differ ent massage therapy clinics and spas in Pensacola.

Acupuncture First originating in China, acupuncture involves the inser tion of very thin needles through the skin at strategic points on the body. Traditional Chinese medi cine theorizes that acupuncture balances the flow of energy or life force by inserting needles into specific points along the meridian. However, many Western practitioners suggest that acupuncture stimulates the soft tissue in the body to boost the body’s natural painkillers.

Exalted Grace Energy Medicine specializes in Reiki and warns that deep relaxation is a side effect of the treatment. If you’re looking for a holistic practice that aids in the healing of the mind, body and spirit, Reiki might be for you.

Rolfing Developed in the 1960s, rolfing may be the answer to those that live with chronic pain and feel like they’ve exhausted all their options. Rolfing is a systematic and holistic method of manipu lating the muscle and fascia to help the body return to its natu ral homeostasis. Different from a deep tissue massage, rolfing practitioners will stretch and manipulate the fascia all over the body. While rolfing appears to focus on only the physical aspect of wellness, many users have noted that it might uncover deeply held emotions. Within the rolfing system, one can expect the “Ten Series,” which is broken into three different steps: the “sleeve” session which is focused on loosening and rebal ancing surface layers of connec tive tissue, the “core” session, which focused on the body from head down to the pelvis and the “integration” session, which is to achieve balance, movement and coordination within the entire network of the body. Some of the benefits of rolfing include conserving energy, improv ing and optimizing movement patterns, reducing inflamma tion and chronic stress, as well as increased athletic performance.

“Banana bags” are in! Gone are the days when only hospital patients received IV drip ther apy treatments as its benefits have reached the general popu lation. IV drip therapy infuses needed nutrients directly into the bloodstream and bypasses the digestive system so your body can absorb as much as it needs before passing along the rest to the kidneys. A few of the benefits of IV drip therapy include promoting faster weight loss, curing hangover symp toms, treating nutrient defi ciencies, cleansing the body of toxins, increasing energy levels, promoting better cardiovascu lar health, easing anxiety and promoting relaxation. Each drip therapy spa offers differ ent assortments of nutrients for you to choose what would best accommodate your needs. The Drip Parlor located on 151 Main St has a variety of options. A few of the IV drips that are popular at the Drip Parlor are the Detox Drip which focuses on cleans ing the liver of toxins, the AfterParty Drip which contains Zofran, calcium and fluids to help cure hangovers and the Beauty Drip, which contains vitamin C and B-Complex to help restore collagen levels and stimulate elastin.

Reiki Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing that involves light touches from a conduit through which a “universal energy” is transferred through the practitioner’s palms. Origi nating from Mikao Usui in the early 1900s, Reiki is now used all over the world to comple ment other forms of health treat ments. It should be noted that Reiki should not be a substi tute for the consultation of a physician or psychotherapist; however, the practice has been known to supplement healing for cancer, chronic pain, infertil ity, digestive problems, Parkin son’s disease, psychological distress (depression and anxi ety) and stress-related illnesses.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy, which literally means “cold therapy,” is an innovative wellness technique that typically entails sitting in a cryotherapy booth that reaches sub-zero temperatures for 3 to 5 minutes. The prac tice is a non-medical treatment, although some doctors utilize cryotherapy or cryoablation as a method to freeze off warts or skin tags. Cryotherapy reduces blood flow to certain areas of the body, which can help to significantly reduce inflamma tion and swelling that causes pain around joints or tendons. It has been known to help athletes recover from soreness after intense workouts and can temporarily reduce nerve activ ity to help relieve pain. Some of the benefits of cryotherapy include reduced recovery time and muscle soreness, manag ing persistent pain and inflam mation, relieving symptoms of depression and anxiety, an increase in metabolism and reduced signs of aging. Chill Cryotherapy, LLC is located in downtown Pensacola’s historic Seville Quarter and is highly recommended for beginners.

Five Points Massage offers authentic Asian massages including a Chinese full body massage, hot stone massage and reflexology foot massage.

Yoga What do a football player and a ballet dancer have in common? They both significantly benefit from yoga, and so can you! Yoga is an exercise for the mind and body. It dates back to 2700 B.C. and its popularity has ebbed and flowed ever since. It began as a spiritual practice but has transi tioned into a modality of well ness for all. On one end of the spectrum there is restorative yoga where a teacher leads participants through four or five poses to stretch and offer rest. On the other end there is hot yoga where the room is made to be between 92 and 105 F. Thishigh heat increases heart rate, boosts the cardio vascular system and helps burn calories. Yoga is for everyone because it can be easily modi fied to benefit each participant. Some major advantages of yoga include increased flexibil ity, core strength and reduced risk of injury. URU Yoga, Disko Lemonade Yoga, and Wild Lemon are popular yoga studios around Pensacola.

W ellness modalities are therapeutic treatments used in holistic, integra tive and even traditional medicine to treat a variety of physical and emotional mental health issues. While many are rooted in ancient wisdom and practices, some have sprung up in the modern era. Cryotherapy has been used for thousands of years in the form of ice therapy and while IV vita min treatments are relatively new, the idea that vitamin deficiencies are at the root of many ailments is a long held belief. If you’re new to the world of wellness, we’ve rounded up a handful of popular therapies and techniques along with an explanation of the process, the benefits of each and a few local practitioners that offer the treat ment. If you see something that sounds interesting, give it a try —you’re worth it!

The lawsuit against the school boards in Orange, Indian River, Duval and Palm Beach counties was filed July 25 in federal court in Orlando. It has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Wendy Berger, who was named to the federal bench by former Presi dent Donald Trump after serving as a state appellate and circuit judge. Attorneys for the four school boards have not filed initial arguments in the case. But in the separate case filed in Tallahassee, Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office has contended that the state has the right to set curriculums for public schools and disputed that the “Legislature acted out of animus against LGBTQ individuals.”

The candidates and parties have a gulf of differences on education issues, including more than two decades of battles about vouchers and school choice.

Teachers unions have long been a key backer of Florida Democrats in guber natorial elections and other races. The Florida Education Association statewide union endorsed Crist before he defeated state Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried in Tuesday’s primary. The FEA said in a news release that Crist’s selection of Hernandez shows he “values Florida’s students and respects our“Karlaeducators.”Hernandez will be a great lieutenant governor for all the people of Florida,” FEA President Andrew Spar said in a prepared statement. “She’s a mom with two kids in our public schools, a teacher focused on students with special needs, and cares deeply about children, families and communities.”

The 26-page motion contends that the law, passed this year by the Republi can-controlled Legislature and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, “was enacted with the purpose to discriminate and has the effect of discriminating against LGBTQ+ students and those with LGBTQ+ family members.”

While abortion was a key issue in the Democratic primary campaign, the selection of Hernandez ensures educa tion will remain a top topic as Demo crats try to defeat Gov. Ron DeSantis in the general election. The Republi can incumbent also has made education issues a priority, including taking the unusual step this year of helping elect county school-board candidates who share his conservative positions. Hernandez, 42, has been president of the United Teachers of Dade since 2016 but has never held public office. Republicans quickly went after Hernandez, whose selection was first reported Friday by CBS Miami reporter JimTheDeFede.Republican National Commit tee called Hernandez “the perfect fit for lockdown lover Crist’s unpopular, antiparents campaign.” DeSantis’ campaign tweeted Saturday that Crist’s choice is a “sympathizer” of the Castro regime in Cuba.TheRepublican Party of Florida on Friday night called Hernandez an “extremist” and “a slap in the face to Florida parents.” It also took aim at her over COVID-19 issues, saying she supported “school closures, forced masking and, if given the opportunity, would allow the indoctrination of Flor idaThestudents.”stateGOP also pointed to wins in Tuesday’s primaries by two DeSantisbacked candidates for the Miami-Dade County School Board, Monica Colucci and Roberto Alonso. Among 30 candi dates who DeSantis endorsed across the state, 19 won races outright and six advanced to the November general elec tion.“(Hernandez) must be puzzled that Charlie chose her given that she, as pres ident of the Miami-Dade teachers union, delivered a big defeat to Democrats right in her own backyard of Miami-Dade County, where candidates endorsed by Gov. DeSantis flipped the school board to prioritize students and parents,” the state GOP said.

DeSantis has fought school boards that he’s accused of not respecting paren tal rights on issues such as mask require ments during the COVID-19 pandemic and the contents of books. He and the Republican-controlled Legislature also, for example, have restricted what can be taught in schools about sexual orienta tion and gender identity.

It alleges violations of speech, equal-protection and due-process rights and pointed to steps that the school districts have taken to try to comply with the law (HB 1557). “HB 1557, by design, deters speech by and about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning people in schools,” the motion said. “To achieve this end, the law employs undefined terms that restrict an absurdly broad scope of speech and activity, casting a broad chilling effect and leaving school officials to draw arbitrary and discriminatory lines in their attempts to implement the law.”

ADDS TEACHERS UNION LEADER TO TICKET

— Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist on Saturday formally announced Karla Hernandez, the teachers union president in Florida’s largest school district, as his running mate in the November election.

A federal judge will hear arguments Sept. 19 in suspended Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren’s request for a preliminary injunction that could reinstate him to the job. U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle on Thursday sched uled the preliminary-injunction hearing in a lawsuit that Warren filed Aug. 17 against Gov. Ron DeSantis. DeSantis suspended the twice-elected state attor ney on Aug. 4, citing a pledge by Warren to not enforce a new law preventing abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Also, DeSantis pointed to Warren’s opposition to criminalizing types of gender-affirming treatment for trans gender people. Attorneys for Warren, a Democrat, alleged in the lawsuit that DeSantis violated the prosecutor’s free-speech rights and overstepped his authority as governor.

The lawyers on Friday filed a motion for a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit launched in July against the school boards in Orange, Indian River, Duval and Palm Beach counties.

ARGUMENTS SET IN SUSPENSIONPROSECUTOR’S

— Lawyers for a group of parents, students and a non-profit organization have asked a federal judge to halt school districts from carrying out a controversial state law that restricts instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation.

After asking supporters if they are “tired of the culture wars and the extrem ists that are dictating what we can say and do,” Hernandez said, “everything is on the ballot this November.”

Crist described the Miami native and daughter of Honduran immigrants as “caring, loving, empathetic, compas sionate.”“That’s what we don’t have in the governor’s office right now. And that’s what you deserve to have in the gover nor’s office,” Crist said while at Hialeah Middle School, where Hernandez spent a decade teaching special-needs students.

“The bill reflects no governmental preference about what students should learn about sexual orientation and gender identity,” the state’s lawyers wrote in a motion to dismiss the case. “Those subjects must be taught appro priately and, for the youngest children, they may be taught by parents, not in public-school classroom settings. That is a legitimate (state) interest.”

Petersburg congress man, defeats DeSantis in November, Hernandez would become Florida’s second Hispanic female lieutenant governor. The first is current Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, a former Miami-Dade legislator who was elected with DeSan tis in Hernandez2018. was on a list of 18 poten tial running mates floated by the Crist campaign in June. The majority of the people on the list were elected offi cials. When Crist unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2014 against then-Gov. Rick Scott, his running mate was a Hispanic woman from Miami-Dade, now-state Sen. Annette HernandezTaddeo.credited her father with teaching her the importance of labor advocacy as he took jobs on farms in South Florida after immigrating from Honduras, where he had been an accoun tant.“Every day he would travel to the Everglades to cut sugarcane and pick tomatoes,” Hernandez said. “Later, he became a carpenter. A skilled laborer. And a proud union member. You see, my mom and dad taught me the value of hard work and the opportunity that it brings. He worked hard his whole life and taught me to do the same. And I follow his example, it’s called the Ameri canHernandezdream.” attended Miami-Dade public schools before earning a bach elor’s degree at Florida International University and a master’s degree in busi ness administration from St. Thomas University.Hernandez described the goals of teaching as a microcosm of the commu nity.“That’s the beauty of public educa tion,” Hernandez said. “Every teacher and every student in our classroom comes from the community. So, we have kids that are children of electrical work ers, bus drivers sitting next to children of parents who are lawyers or engineers.”

JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF TALLAHASSEEFLORIDA

The plaintiffs in the Orlando lawsuit include Jen and Matt Cousins, the parents of four children in Orange County schools; Will Larkins, a senior at Orange County’s Winter Park High School who is president of the school’s Queer Student Union; David Dinan and Vik Gongidi, a married samesex couple who have two children in Indian River County schools; and the non-profit CenterLink, Inc., which has members including LGTBQ commu nity centers in Orange, Duval and Palm Beach counties. They are represented by lawyers from the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Southern Legal Counsel, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the international law firm of Baker McKenzie. In Friday’s motion for a preliminary injunction, they raised a series of argu ments, including that the law “imper missibly chills” speech in violation of the First Amendment and is unconsti tutionally overbroad and vague. They also cited steps that the school districts have taken to try to comply with the law. As an example, they wrote that the Duval, Indian River and Palm Beach school districts have reduced or eliminated LGBTQ-student support guides and anti-bullying guid ance.“In (the Palm Beach County district), professional development workshops on LGBTQ+ issues were suspended and, in many districts, books with LGBTQ+ characters for students in K-12 have been removed or are being reviewed under HB 1557,” the motion said. “Teachers have been encouraged to avoid anything that might generate discussion about LGBTQ+ people and have been chilled from support ing LGBTQ+ students and student groups. COVID-19 CASES DROP, DEATHS NEAR 80,000

NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF

The number of Florida residents testing positive for COVID-19 dropped during the past two weeks, while pandemic deaths are nearing 80,000, accord ing to data released Friday by the state Department of Health. The data showed that 43,703 people tested positive for COVID-10 from Aug. 19 through Thursday, after 45,416 tested positive the previous week. Those were the first weeks in more than two months that new cases totaled fewer than 50,000. Mean while, the new data showed that at least 79,573 Florida residents have died of COVID-19 since the pandemic started in early 2020. That was up from a total of 78,559 in a report released Aug. 12. Because of lags in reporting, it is unclear when the additional deaths occurred.

The law, which has drawn nation wide attention, prevents instruction on gender identity and sexual orien tation in kindergarten through third grade and requires that such instruc tion be “age-appropriate … in accor dance with state academic standards” in older Republicangrades. lawmakers titled the measure the “Parental Rights in Education” bill. Opponents labeled it the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
