ong before electric and gas kilns became the cornerstone of the ceramics industry, pottery was hand formed and fired within the dirt and flaming embers of pit fires and open bonfires. Pit firing is the oldest form of baking, or firing, clay pottery and dates back more than 30,000 years ago. Just as the name suggests, pit firing involves digging out a pit in the ground, starting a fire to dry out the wet earth and build up a bed of hot embers, laying clay pieces in the pit, covering them with combustible material, setting the pit ablaze and allowing the fire to burn for several hours until it is cool enough to uncover the pieces. While this method of firing and finishing pottery is not as widely or commonly practiced as firing in modern-day kilns, pit firing creates a unique aesthetic finish on ceramic wares, carries a smaller carbon footprint and can promote both sustainable and accessible art practices. One group of local artists have spent the better part of a year researching, designing pits and educating others through their pit firing collective.
Local artists Eniko Ujj and Cat Gambel first became interested in alternative firing methods when they attended a weekend-long creative workshop in collaboration with New Orleans-based composer, James May, and hosted by Dr. John Clark, Professor Emeritus of Loyola University, at Bayou La Terre Institute for Social Ecology. Here they explored memory, social ecology, the sonic environment and worked as a group to fire handmade clay rattles in a pit fire. Ujj and Gambel became enthralled with the pit firing process in preparation for this workshop in early 2021 and began organizing pit fires together in their own back yards. The two teamed up with fellow friends and artists and formed a core group of pit-firing enthusiasts that include Eniko Ujj, Cat Gambel, Kyle Miller, Nick Phoenix and Katie Soo. This collective works together to harvest and process wild clay from the Blackwater River system, collect fallen debris from storms in the longleaf pine ecosystem to help with the prescribed burn process and organize a monthly group pit fire in a variety of locations, including the eco-resort, Coldwater Gardens in Milton, FL. “I consider building and preparing the pits a form of tactile therapy just like working with clay,” Ujj explained. “You’re constantly touching and building and involved with the entire process from collecting the wood to monitoring the temperature during the fire unlike with a programmable kiln where you can put your pieces in and forget about
them. I also think there is such a magical quality to pit firing when you finally get to unearth and dig out your ceramics to see what happened—that’s probably my favorite part.” This magical and unpredictable quality of pit firing is part of the atmospheric process within the pit where the colors and patterns are derived from what is consumed and burned within the fire—as opposed to colors added to ceramics with glaze finishes. The combustible items like egg shells, banana peels, avocado skin, animal poop, dried flowers, seaweed and other natural items added to the pit will turn to vapor and swirl around the pottery in the pit. Each combustible is a new colorant experiment, and pit fired pottery is most striking for its natural tones of black, gray and white with pops of sporadic color from the combustibles. “I think kilns offer more predictability and stability,” Gambel explained. “Pieces fired with the pit method are not food safe or watertight, so there are fewer functional options for ceramicists. All of the materials burning together affect the surface of the clay and the results are hard to repeat. In one firing, many of our pieces came out with gorgeous splashes of red; in another we had specks of blue. We have theories on what causes these colors, and there is some research, but it is impossible to get a very specific color in a specific way—so much is chance and trusting the beauty of what can’t be controlled.”
From left to right: Current pit-
fire collective members include Nick Phoenix, Eniko Ujj, Cat Gambel, Katie Soo and Kyle Miller. While pit-fired pottery is porous and not food safe or water-tight, our ancestors traditionally used a number of materials and different techniques to waterproof their ceramics by coating the inside of them with tree sap, pine resin, animal fats and waxes before glazing was invented. Much of the process of the collective has been dedicated to research, designing pits and recording the results of their pit fires as very little research and data exists on this ancient method. The group received funding and equipment from a grant by the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) at the University of West Florida. Kyle Miller, a student in the art department at UWF, applied for the grant with Cat Gambel, the Director of The Art Gallery (TAG) at UWF, as his faculty advisor. The OUR grant funded much-needed safety equipment for handling the fire and hot pottery and allowed the group to purchase a commercial pyrometer to accurately measure the pit temperature and aid in data collection. “You can already see the difference from the beginning to where we are now. Our initial pit fires took days to finish and now we can do the entire process in six hours because we know the exact temperatures and timing for each step of the process,” Miller explained. “The firing process itself takes roughly two hours. Then you have to let the pieces cool naturally. There is an element of thermal shock that you have to be aware of so the pieces don’t break. It’s all very technical. If the pieces that are on top are too heavy, they’ll crack the pottery. If your fire gets too hot, too fast, you’ll crack the pottery. If your fire gets cold too fast, you’ll crack in the pottery. There are a lot of instances where you can crack the pottery.” By studying the scientific method of pit firing and using modern instruments to measure them, the group has managed to improve the success rate of pit firing from historical standards. Each pit fire has around an 80-90 percent success rate (of unbroken pieces) compared to historical averages of 25 percent
or lower. Miller also explained that they have pushed the boundaries by experimenting with their combustible colorants and achieved purple, blue and rainbow hues that aren’t normally achieved in pit fires. Sustainability and eco-sustainable art practices are at the core of this group. To lower their carbon emissions from the smoke produced during the pit fires, the group has not only perfected the size of the pit, utilizing a smaller design than the original pit fires which consumed more resources, but they have also utilized fallen debris that would already be burned in prescribed burns at Coldwater Gardens to assist in their longleaf pine restoration. By collecting some of this excess debris and dry wood before the burns, the group can actually help protect the longleaf pines from damage. Nick Phoenix has lived and worked at Coldwater Gardens since 2012 and helped connect the group to this larger location for pit firing. He is drawn toward pit firing for its natural elements and the ability to use locally-sourced materials to create functional and aesthetic art. “Pit firing is unpredictable, raw and natural. It’s amazing to uncover the pieces after they’ve gone through such an aggressive process of temperature swing, atmospheric change and chemical reaction and to see the permanent marks left behind by different combustibles, usually all sourced directly from nature. By using clay dug from the banks of Coldwater Creek, firing with downed trees from the same property, decorating with horse hair from stables no more than five miles away, and washing the fired pieces in the creek, the entire process just feels natural,” he said. In addition to the aesthetic quali-
ties of the pit firing process, the group has also experimented with post-fire decoration by applying materials like horse hair, feathers and snake skin to pieces pulled out of the fire. These materials burn onto the still-heated ceramics and create unique patterns. Another method involves setting shiitake mushroom caps on freshly-rinsed pieces and allowing the spores to create a print on the side of the ceramic pieces. “There is a lot of waste in the art world,” Miller said. “I think ecobased and sustainable art practices are important because we only have one planet. Trying to be eco-friendly in your art practice gives you a different perspective and allows you to have a little bit more respect for where your materials come from. We are all interested in sharing this information, educating others about the pit firing process and learning from others about their own ecosustainable art practices like foraging materials to create dyes and inks. The additional beauty of pit firing is that they are accessible and can be done anywhere in the world, so you don’t need access to an expensive kiln.” As this group continues to assemble a collection of pit fired pieces, they hope to curate a group exhibit, host public workshops on the pit firing process and grow the collective with more ceramicists and multimodal nature-based art practices. If you’re a ceramicist interested in getting involved, you can contact any of the artists in the collective— but be prepared to help dig the pit! PENSACOLA’S AIRPORT HAS RECORD BREAKING YEAR AND LOWEST FARES IN THE U.S. The numbers are in: Passenger travel through Pensacola International Airport has climbed back to prepandemic levels. In fact, Pensacola’s airport has broken its own record, beating 2019’s numbers by an increase of 4%. From January to December 2021, 87,197 more passengers passed through PNS when compared to 2019, for a total of 2,324,044 passengers. The increase in passenger traffic is due in large part to the increase in tourism throughout Pensacola and the surrounding communities. Pensacola International Airport has consistently averaged above national numbers throughout the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The summer of 2021 saw an increase of 25% more passengers when compared to 2019, the previous record-breaking year for PNS, with 2,236,847 total passengers. “The tourism industry and our airline partners understood that Pensacola and the destinations offered through PNS are highly desired destinations for travelers and vacationers,” said Airport Director Matt Coughlin. “Our teams proudly did our part to create a fly easy experience for each traveler, welcoming them to the Gateway to the Gulf Coast.” Not only did Pensacola have a record-breaking year, but it was also hailed as having among the lowest fares in the nation. According to the latest ValuePenguin study — which examines fluctuations in airfare since

the pandemic struck — average fare costs across the U.S. remain almost 20% lower than they were prior to COVID-19. The two U.S. airports where the average cost of departing flights remains the lowest are New Jersey’s Newark International and Pensacola International Airport, where flights cost passengers 30% less on average than they did pre-COVID. “These announcements speak to the many great things being done at the airport and in Pensacola,” Mayor Grover Robinson said. “When compared to pre-COVID, we have more flights, more airlines, and lower costs. It is amazing for me to see where we are and I am excited about the future of Pensacola’s airport.” ValuePenguin researchers calculated average airfare costs based upon data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ Passenger Origin and Destination Survey. The figures have been adjusted for inflation and are based on domestic itinerary fees, including taxes and fees. Currently, Pensacola International Airport has more than 20 destinations offered by eight airlines including Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest, Spirit, Silver Airways, Frontier, and Boutique Air. ESCAMBIA COUNTY RECOGNIZES FEB. 11 AS GENERAL DANIEL “CHAPPIE” JAMES DAY At the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Thursday, Feb. 10, the board unanimously voted to proclaim Feb. 11, 2022 as “General Daniel ‘Chappie’ James Day.” General James was honored posthumously on his 102nd birthday, recognizing the lifetime of achievements of an individual who pursued and attained excellence during his life. Born on Feb. 11, 1920, in Pensacola’s East Side neighborhood, General James attended the school developed by his mother, Mrs. Lillie Ana James. He later graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and enrolled at Tuskegee Institute. From there, he went on to become the first African American fourstar officer in the U.S. Air Force. General James was a decorated fighter pilot who earned his Army Air Corps wings in 1943 at Tuskegee Army Air Field, training pilots for the all-black 99thPursuit Squadron during World War II. General James flew 101 combat missions in Korea and 78 missions in Vietnam. In 1975, he was promoted to the four-star rank of General
and assigned as Commander in Chief of NORAD/ADCOM at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. General James died tragically of a heart attack at age 58, just three weeks after his retirement from the Air Force. On Nov. 7, 2000, the National Register of Historic Places declared his childhood home, located at 1606 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, a historical site. On June 6, 2018, the home officially opened as the Chappie James Museum. The General Daniel “Chappie” James Flight Academy is located at 1608 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. Learn more about the Chappie James Museum at chappiejamesmuseum.org. “Escambia County is honored to have had General James as a resident, leader and inspiration in our community,” said District 3 Commissioner Lumon May. “It’s my pleasure to give this proclamation during Black History Month. We thank General James for his service to our country and for his lasting impact in Escambia County.”

VOTE BY MAIL CHANGES WOULD ADD ENVELOPES, ID NUMBERS DARA KAM NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE --- Republican legislative leaders for the second year in a row are targeting mail-in voting, this time with a proposal one supervisor of elections called “a recipe for disaster.” The House and Senate this month began moving forward with far-reaching measures that would create a statewide elections security force, require elections supervisors to scrub the voting rolls more often and make voters provide personal identification data on mail-in ballots. Under current law, voters enclose completed mail-in ballots inside “secrecy” envelopes or sleeves before putting them inside another envelope to be mailed to county supervisors of elections or submitted at drop boxes manned by supervisors’ staff. The proposals (SB 524, HB 7067) would require voters to put their doubleenveloped ballots inside a third envelope and mark the last four digits of their driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, or state ID numbers – whichever number is on file with the election supervisor’s office – to be counted. Currently, “secrecy” envelopes accompanying mail-in ballots do not have to be returned to supervisors for the votes to be deemed valid. Lake County Supervisor of Elections Alan Hays, a Republican who is a former state senator, called requiring voters to use a “certification” envelope and provide the identification number on file with the supervisor’s office “a recipe for disaster.” “Getting voters to follow instructions is not easy,” Hays told the Senate Ethics and Elections Committee on Feb. 1. “If you think they’re going to follow the instruc-

LAWMAKERS TARGET MONEY FOR KEYS, ‘HEARTLAND’ JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE --- Lawmakers want to further pinpoint where to use realestate tax revenue for land conservation, as state economists warn the real-estate market might slow because of affordability problems and rising interest rates. Members of the House Agriculture & Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee on Monday quickly pushed forward bills that would provide $20 million a year to help ecosystems in the Florida Keys and an additional $20 million for the headwaters of several waterways in Central Florida. The money for the Keys (HB 449), which was approved without opposition or debate, would be used for restoration of the Keys, Florida Bay, and ecosystems such as coral reefs and to acquire land within what is known as the Florida Keys Area of Critical State Concern. A separate measure (HB 603), which was approved in a 13-1 vote, would help carry out a 2017 law known as the Heartland Headwaters Protection and Sustainability Act, which was designed to protect the headwaters of the Alafia, Hillsborough, Kissimmee, Ocklawaha, Peace and Withlacoochee Rivers in the Green Swamp and Polk County. The bill points, at least in part, to concerns about future water supplies in the region by financing the design or construction of “projects to protect, restore and enhance the headwaters,” bill sponsor Melony Bell, R-Fort Meade, said. But Lindsay Cross, water and land policy director for the Florida Conservation Voters, said the legislation for the Heartland headwaters includes uses that go beyond a 2014 voter-approved constitutional amendment that set aside documentary-stamp tax money for conservation projects. The money, which is collected on real-estate transactions, goes into the state’s Land Acquisition Trust Fund. “As written, it (the bill) would allow for
money from the Land Acquisition Trust Fund to be used for gray infrastructure like wastewater systems and pipes and pumps, rather than nature-based solutions,” Cross said. In past sessions, lawmakers have earmarked annual spending from the fund to include about $200 million for Everglades protection; $64 million for a reservoir project in the Everglades Agricultural Area; $50 million for the state’s natural springs; and $5 million for Lake Apopka. Another $136 million is committed to debt payments. Because of increased real estate transactions, so-called “doc” stamp tax collections for the current fiscal year have been bumped up by 8.3 percent. State economists in January forecast the fund would get $1.456 billion, about $200 million more than had been estimated in August. The projected increase came after doc-stamp collections in the 2020-2021 fiscal year were on par with the peak reached at the height of a housing boom in the 2005-2006 fiscal year. However, in revising the state’s fiscal outlook, economists on Jan. 21 said docstamp revenue is expected to drop in coming years “as affordability increasingly becomes an issue.” Economists also point to an anticipated increase in interest rates on 30-year fixed mortgages, from a historic low average of 2.8 percent in 2020 to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s anticipated 4.3 percent in 2023, further making homes less affordable. “These changes will be sufficient to chase some potential buyers from the market --- as well as bring an end to the purchasing by buyers attempting to beat the increase --- leaving dampened sales activity in their aftermath,” the Jan. 21 report said. The report projects doc-stamp revenue to drop 20.4 percent in the 20222023 fiscal year and said it could take two additional years before showing a slow rebound.
SECOND SHERIFF TO WEIGH IN ON ‘MARSY’S LAW’ CASE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Volusia County Sheriff Michael Chitwood received approval Monday from the Florida Supreme Court to file a friend-of-the-court brief arguing that a 2018 constitutional amendment known as “Marsy’s Law” should not apply to law-enforcement officers. The approval came after the Supreme Court last week said Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri could file a brief taking a similar position. The voter-approved Marsy’s Law amendment included a series of protections for crime victims. The briefs will address a Supreme Court case involving two Tallahassee police officers who invoked the law to prevent their identities from being released after use-of-force shooting incidents in which they were threatened. The officers argued they were victims in

Roughly 6.5 percent of Leon County voters don’t have any of those numbers on file, Supervisor Mark Earley told the News Service. And Broward County Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott recently said that about 70,000 voters in his county lacked any of those forms of identification on record. League of Women Voters of Florida President Cecile Scoon equated the proposed vote-by-mail changes to literacy tests used to keep Black people from voting before the national Voting Rights Act was passed in the 1960s. “If you don’t sign those certificates in the right way, if you put your signature on the wrong envelope, you lose. You put the wrong four digits on those envelopes, you lose. You don’t put all the envelopes in there, you lose,” Scoon said. “They’re making vote by mail onerous, difficult and hard to do.” But Senate bill sponsor Travis Hutson told the Senate committee that it should be easy for people to provide their ID on mail-in ballots because the same information is needed to request one. “I don’t know why it’s so difficult for you to give your information again. So I don’t know if it’s going to create the chilling effect people are talking about,” Hutson, R-St. Augustine said. “So I don’t think what we’re asking for is too much for them to identify themselves and put in additional envelopes. And I do like to give our voters a lot of credit in their intelligence. I don’t think they’re that dumb. But if for some reason the supervisors want to work on comfort language or some way to make sure we can identify these in a secure way, I’m completely open to that.”
the incidents. The 1st District Court of Appeal last year agreed with the officers, leading the city of Tallahassee to take the case to the Supreme Court. In a motion Monday seeking to file a brief, Chitwood said his department “makes a concerted effort to be transparent and accountable” and has released the names of deputies who have been involved in shootings. “VSO (the Volusia Sheriff’s Office) is interested in this appeal as it believes that the citizens should know the names of deputies who are involved in the use of deadly force while carrying out their official duties,” the motion said. “This disclosure of the deputies’ names not only promotes transparency and accountability but helps to rebuild the eroding public trust in law enforcement. VSO desires to continue disclosing the names of deputies who are involved in the use of deadly force while in the execution of their official duties in order to continue promoting transparency and accountability.” The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case, though it has not set a date for arguments.

With great sorrow and a heavy heart, we report the passing of our friend, colleague, and unrelenting advocate for justice, attorney, Neil Overholtz. Neil’s passing marks the dimming of one of the brightest stars in the products liability mass tort world.
YOU ARE NOTIFIED that an action to quiet title to the following property in Escambia County, Florida to extinguish any claim to said property claimed by FAUSTINE C. NORTON, deceased, or FRANK NORTON, deceased:
During Neil’s two decades long career he fought tirelessly for his clients, primarily in the areas of pharmaceutical and medical device product liability. Neil, as the proverbial David, took on and defeated the biggest Goliath’s for his clients. In doing so, he garnered the universal support and admiration of his peers who repeatedly selected him to lead coordinated efforts to master complex scientific concepts and uncover corporate corruption. IN THE CIRCUIT COURT IN AND FOR ESCAMBIA COUNTY, FLORIDA Case No.: 2021 CA 002895 Division: J
Most recently, Neil applied all of those skills to secure what was, at the time, the largest single verdict for a claimant in the 3M Combat Arms earplug litigation. Neil, along side his best friend and co-counsel, Doug Monsour secured a jury verdict of $22.5 million dollars for a former U.S. Service Member who deployed to Iraq during the War on Terror and suffered permanent hearing damage and tinnitus. Neil’s loss leaves a huge hole in the Plaintiff’s mass tort bar. He is gone now but will never be forgotten. Neil leaves behind his wife Gaye Overholtz, his children Grace and Katie Overholtz and his step-children, Carl and Emily Dawson. Funeral arrangements are pending at this time. Inquiries may be sent to NeilOverholtz@awkolaw.com and we will provide further information when available. 2WR2/16-2/23LN

NOTICE OF ACTION
IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE FIRST JUDICIAL CIRCUIT IN AND FOR SANTA ROSA COUNTY, FLORIDA
Neil was unmatched in his ability to synthesize information gleaned through the review of millions of documents to present courts and witnesses with a clear picture of the conduct giving rise to liability. He was a fearless and fearsome deposition taker, eliciting some of the most compelling testimony in litigation after litigation. It has been said that Neil was able, in short-order, to comprehend complex topics such as physics, chemistry, epidemiology, and pharmacology to such an astounding depth, that he knew more than most medical doctors, Ph.D.’s, and CEO’s he challenged during highstakes, case-defining depositions.
