ensacola’s newest event planning company, WolfGang, LLC, specializes in making your furry friend the center of attention with its creative pup-themed celebrations for all occasions. From “Pup Crawls,” “Mutts & Mimosas” and “Barkday Paw-ties” to “Adoptiversaries” and “Yappy Hours,” the event planners at WolfGang are sure to make your celebration memorable.

Wo l f G a n g c o - ow n e r s , Jessica and Kim Wolford, are the brains behind this creative business concept. The two found themselves disappointed that their dogs were often excluded from participating in many of the events and activities that they enjoyed. As a solution to this rather hairy predicament, the couple launched WolfGang, LLC in August of 2021 as Pensacola’s first and only dog-centered full-service event planning company. “We opened the businesses because we wanted to find a way to incorporate our dogs into more activities and events we participate in,” WolfGang co-owner Jessica Wolford explained. After organizing and hosting their f irst successful dog-friendly pub crawl (or “Pup Crawl”) throughout downtown Pensacola, WolfGang was born. “The name WolfGang is actually a spin

on both mine and Kim’s last name [Wolford]. We call our dogs the ‘Wolford gang of six’, so that’s where the name WolfGang came from,” Jessica Wolford said. WolfGang specializes in creating and organizing themed events that are both dog-centered and human-friendly. “We can host just about any type of event for your dog. Basically anything that can put your dog on the invitation, that’s what we do,” Jessica Wolford explained. Since its opening, WolfGang has organized various dog-centered events throughout downtown Pensacola and numerous other celebrations for dog owners and their furry friends. When it comes to the details, Wolfgang definitely has it covered–from custom gift bags, party toys and invitations to the decor and food, the possibilities are endless. Most recently, WolfGang

has partnered with the Pensacola Humane Society to host their f irst annual Pawdi Gras, a dog-centered Mardi Gras celebration to benef it the Pensacola Humane Society. “This will be WolfGang’s first major public event since opening in 2021 and we are very excited about it,” Jessica Wolford said.

We wanted to find a way to incorporate our dogs into more activities and events we participate in.” The event will feature a Mardi Gras parade in which dog owners are invited to bring their pooch and march through the downtown streets in colorful costumes. K-9 units and local law enforcement will lead the pup-themed parade serving as the grand marshals. Other event festivities i n c l u d e d og c o s t u m e contests, raffles, games, live music and a variety of local food and beverage vendors. The Pensacola Humane Society and other local organizations will also be on-site with

ties filled with pups, food and fun at Perfect Plain Brewing Co. in downtown Pensacola. Streets will be closed from Tarragona to Palafox to accommodate the event’s crowd and the parade, which will kick off at 2 pm. Pawdi Gras is free and open to the public; however, there is a suggested donation of $10 which will go to support the Pensacola Humane Society. Guests wanting to participate in the parade are invited to register in advance on February 12 at Perfect Plain Brewing

Co. from 5 pm to 7 pm, or they may register on the day of the event. WolfGang selects a local non-profit to benefit from each of the events they host throughout the year. All proceeds gained from Pawdi Gras will go to directly support the Pensacola Humane Society and its mission. “Pawdi Gras was an amazing opportunity to join forces with community businesses to raise fiscal donations to support our Greater Good fund! This funding provides outreach through medical, food and emergency assistance and more for underserved community pet owners,” Director of Development for Pensacola Humane Society, Manda Moore said. PENSACOLA MESS HALL PRESENTS AN AUTHOR TALK WITH ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALIST AND AUTHOR, CYNTHIA BARNETT Environmental journalist Cynthia Barnett has chased the story of humanity and rain from the storms of the Little Ice Age to the modern extremes of climate change. Join the Pensacola MESS Hall for an engaging presentation to hear how rain’s history has much to tell us about coming together to live more ethically with water — and adapt to the stormy times ahead. After thousands of years spent praying for rain or worshiping it — burning witches at the stake to stop rain or sacrificing small children to bring it; mocking rain with irrigated agriculture and cities built in floodplains; even trying to blast rain out of the sky with mortars meant for war — humanity has finally managed to change the rain. Only not in ways we intended. Changing rainfall patterns are some of the earliest tremors of our warming globe, with wet places getting more deluges, dry ones seared in worsening droughts. During this author talk Barnett will draw from the sciences, history and the arts to illustrate the connections between rain and our lives, past, present, and future. Barnett, an award-winning author, teaches environmental journalism at the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications. She is the author of Rain: A Natural and Cultural History, a finalist for the National Book Award and PEN/E.O. Wilson Award for

Literary Science Writing, and named a best book of 2015 by NPR’s Science Friday, the Boston Globe, the Miami Herald and others. Registration is required; space is limited for this in-person event. This program is recommended for ages 15+. Please visit pensacolamesshall.org/rain/ to register. This program is a partnership between Florida Humanities and the Pensacola MESS Hall. In addition to the lecture at the MESS Hall, Barnett will present a book signing hosted by Bodacious Bookstore & Cafe. She will be signing her newest book, The Sound of the Sea: Seashells and the Fate of the Oceans, is a natural and cultural history of seashells and the animals that make them—revealing what they have to tell us about nature, our changing oceans, and ourselves. The MESS Hall will be at this event with hands on science activities related to seashells. The MESS Hall will follow up the lecture with an engaging interactive forum on March 22. This deliberative forum brings the participants through the resilience planning process for a generic city, named Rivertown. Participants will use visualizations to explore potential vulnerabilities to city infrastructures, social networks, and ecosystems from extreme precipitation. They then learn and discuss stakeholder values, consider

VEO SCOOTERS COMING TO PENSACOLA VEO will bring e-scooters to the City of Pensacola beginning Wednesday, Jan. 26, offering residents and visitors a new way to explore Pensacola with the Cosmo ve1 model. This micromobility device offers a cushioned seat and advanced steel suspension. Veo currently operates e-scooters in more than 30 cities nationwide, and will deploy up to 250 scooters in the franchise area for the remainder of the pilot program. “We are excited to welcome Veo to the City of Pensacola and offer another multimodal transportation option for residents and visitors,” Mayor Grover Robinson said. “E-scooters provide an environmentally-conscious mode of transportation to explore Pensacola, and they support the city’s ongoing efforts to become a more multimodal community.” Veo will offer scooters to residents and visitors, reducing carbon emissions and traffic congestion on roadways. The scooters also provide another transportation option for residents without cars. “Veo is committed to developing a long-term, collaborative relationship with the City of Pensacola to support the city’s efforts to offer residents and visitors new ways to explore the city with the latest modes of micromobility,” said Candice Xie, Veo CEO. “Veo’s Cosmo scooter is our most accessible yet, and appeals to riders of various ages and abilities by providing a comfortable seat and a lower center of gravity for a balanced ride.” Through the VeoRide app available for download on the App Store or Google Play, riders can locate the nearest Veo scooter on a map, complete the safety tutorial and ride directly to their desired destination. Upon ending their trip, riders should park the device upright and be courteous of others by placing it along the side of a sidewalk or sidewalk area to keep the pedestrian path open. Remember to take a photo of the scooter through the app to ensure proper parking. The cost for a Veo ride is $1 to start and 39 cents per minute fee to ride. Riders can use the promo code VEOX-

PNS for $10 riding credit during the initial launch period. Discounted fees are available to low-income users who qualify through the Veo Access Program. Veo guidelines and rules include: • The electric scooters can be used on roads and in bike lanes and have a maximum speed of 15 mph. No riding on sidewalks is allowed. • Scooters must be parked out of the way of pedestrians and never blocking driveways or accessibility ramps. • Riders are required to be at least 18 years old to access the scooters. • Riders are encouraged to wear a helmet on every ride. • Riders are required to obey all standard rules of the road. • Additional rules may apply. Please refer to the app for more information. Mechanical issues, inappropriate parking and other questions or concerns can be reported through the Help Center in the VeoRide app, at 855-836-2256 or hello@VeoRide.com. Micromobility device ordinance compliance issues can also be reported through City of Pensacola 311. Information on the slow zone, exclusion areas where micromobility devices are not allowed, and other regulations is available on the City Shared Micromobility website. About Veo

SENATE LOOKS TO BOLSTER DESANTIS APPOINTMENT POWER JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE — A proposal that would give the governor more say in making appointments to the top positions at some state agencies was expanded Monday in the Senate but not to the extent proposed in the House. The Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee voted 4-1 to back a revamped proposal (SB 1658), filed by Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, that would increase the governor’s power to appoint the secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection, the commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the executive director of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. The issue emerged after a clash last year between Gov. Ron DeSantis and Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried about DeSantis’ move to appoint Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Shawn Harrison without approval from the state Cabinet. The Cabinet has long signed off on the Department of Environmental Protection secretary and the leaders of a handful of other state agencies. Bean argued, in part, that his proposal would further changes that voters approved in 1998 to restructure the Cabinet from six to three positions. Despite the reduced number of Cabinet members, Bean said the changes did not reduce the number of votes the governor needed for appointments. “It didn’t say 50 percent, it said three votes,” Bean said. “So, we have moved forward, fast forward, where three votes (now) requires a unanimous consent.” The 1998 changes merged the Cabinet offices of the treasurer and comptroller as the chief financial officer and removed the elected secretary of state and education commissioner from the panel and made them appointed positions. An initial version of Bean’s bill would have applied only to the appointment of the Department of Environmental Protection secretary. DeSantis went ahead with the Hamilton appointment last year despite the objections of Fried, a Democratic candidate for governor. Republican Attorney General Ashley Moody and Republican Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis did not oppose DeSantis’ decision to unilaterally appoint Harrison.

SENATE TO TAKE UP HIGHER ED SEARCH EXEMPTION NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF After the proposal fell one vote short last year, the Florida Senate on Thursday is slated to consider a bill that would create a public-records exemption to shield personal information about applicants to become college and university presidents. The Senate on Monday published a list of bills that it will consider during a Thursday floor session, including the

Sen. Loranne Ausley, D-Tallahassee, said Monday she had concerns about removing Cabinet oversight. “These are important agencies, and I think there’s a reason that at one point we thought the Cabinet should have a vote,” Ausley said. “I think it’s important to maintain what we have.” Before the Senate committee meeting, Fried issued a statement calling the changes a “power grab.” “I have continuously made clear that my qualm is not with the current (DEP) nominee, but that this critical appointment be done in accordance with Florida law,” Fried said. “But instead of simply bringing this nomination before the Cabinet, Governor DeSantis and his cronies are seeking to change the law. This is yet another power grab by the governor intent on consolidating power, changing laws to crack down on any potential dissent or opposing views, in a dictatorial fashion that only serves his ambitions --- not the people of Florida.” Under the changes, the governor could either seek concurrence of three Cabinet members on the environmental secretary position or have the appointment go before the Senate for confirmation as DeSantis did with Harrison. As for the veterans’ affairs and law enforcement leaders, rather than the governor getting the approval of the three Cabinet members, the appointments would require majority votes among the four statewide elected officials with the governor on the prevailing side. The House version of the proposal (HB 1295), which awaits an appearance before the Judiciary Committee, would also address the appointment of the head of the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The House’s proposed changes would make clear that the environmental secretary is an appointment of the governor. The Department of Highway, Safety and Motor Vehicles executive director would become a secretary appointed by the governor rather than an agency head under the governor and Cabinet. The FDLE commissioner and veterans’ affairs executive director positions would shift from a requirement of needing approval from all three Cabinet members to requiring the governor to be on the prevailing side of 3-1 votes. In the case of the FDLE commissioner, the governor and attorney general would have to agree.

search exemption (SB 520), filed by Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg. The bill would keep confidential names and other information that could identify applicants, though information about finalists would be disclosed near the end of searches. Brandes and other supporters have argued that the change could help broaden the pool of applicants to lead colleges and universities, but critics say it would be at odds with Florida’s Sunshine Law, which for decades has been designed to support open government. The House passed such a bill last year, but it fell one vote short in the Senate.

HOUSE LOOKS TO BOOST LAW OFFICER RECRUITMENT JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE --- Bonuses of up to $5,000 that Gov. Ron DeSantis has sought to entice law-enforcement officers to Florida are moving through the House as part of a broader package focused on people who don badges. The House Appropriations Committee voted unanimously Monday to approve the measure (HB 3), which supporters say could help understaffed law-enforcement agencies and improve the morale of current officers through recruitment and retention. The proposal, sponsored by Rep. Tom Leek, R-Ormond Beach, would establish a bonus program to provide one-time payments of up to $5,000 to newly employed law-enforcement officers in the state, along with bonuses for officers who adopt children. It also would set up a Florida Law Enforcement Academy Scholarship Program to cover basic training tuition and fees. “This bill is a small sacrifice to show our appreciation,” Leek said. Democrats lawmakers praised the package but requested more training for officers. Rep. Patricia Williams, D-Pompano Beach, said the bill should require new officers to undergo mental and psychological training. “When it was time for officers to come to my neighborhood, they didn’t come to protect, they came to destroy,” Williams said. “For the recruitment of out-of-state off icers, all previous records of employment, including complaints, discipline actions in internal affairs, should be taken into consideration. Not hand delivered, but mailed directly to the state of Florida agency that will be taking that officer in.” Rep. Matt Willhite, a Wellington Democrat and firefighter, said consideration should also be given to the recruitment of correctional officers and dispatchers. “I also have had the opportunity to attend and do inspections of multiple prisons in the state of Florida and recognize the shortage we have in our corrections officers,” Willhite said.

INCREASED DUKE FUEL COSTS GET GO-AHEAD NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Duke Energy Florida customers will start seeing increased monthly bills because of higher-than-expected fuel costs for power plants. The state Public Service Commission on Tuesday approved a Duke request to collect an additional $314 million from customers, with the change taking effect in March. Duke and other utilities have grappled for months with higher-than-expected natural gas prices. Each year, the Public Service Commission sets the amounts that utilities can

“We have a major shortage in the state of Florida in our 911 dispatchers, telecommunicators. They’re the first line of the first-responder system. And if we don’t have enough of them, the rest of the system fails.” The measure needs approval from the Judiciary Committee before it could go to the full House. A Senate version has not been filed. Under the proposal, the state Department of Economic Opportunity would develop minimum eligibility requirements for newly employed officers to get bonus payments. A House staff analysis of the bill said the Orange County Sheriff ’s Office offers $2,500 signing bonuses for candidates with two or more years of full-time law enforcement experience and $1,500 to others, while Fort Myers offers relocation assistance of up to $5,000 for out-of-state candidates, $3,000 for in-state candidates, and $1,000 for newly hired officers. DeSantis, who is up for re-election this year, has made beefing up law enforcement a hallmark of his policies through such things as the proposed $5,000 signing bonuses. “My proposals to increase pay for state law enforcement by up to 25 percent and to provide $5,000 signing bonuses to law enforcement personnel who either transfer to or begin their careers in Florida will spark a tidal wave of qualified professionals seeking employment at agencies throughout the state,” he said during a State of the State address Jan. 11. Under Leek’s bill, another $1,000 could be available to cover training costs for people who are recruited. Also, an off icer could also draw $10,000 for adopting through the state child welfare system, with the benefit growing to $25,000 for adopting a child with special needs. The bill also would increase the base salary for each county sheriff by $5,000. Last week, DeSantis received the endorsement of 56 sheriffs. The proposal also would allow veterans and other people with associate degrees or higher to skip a basic-skills test required to enter the law-enforcement basic recruit training program.

collect for fuel in the following year. But if costs are higher than expected, utilities can seek what are known as “midcourse corrections” that allow them to increase the amounts that customers pay. Under the request approved Tuesday, residential customers who use 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity would see their monthly bills go from the current $140.96 to $148.90. The utility industry uses 1,000 kilowatt-hour residential bills as a benchmark, though electricity usage varies widely. The commission has also approved a mid-course correction sought by Florida Power & Light because of fuel costs and is considering a proposed increase by Tampa Electric Co.

HOUSE SET TO VOTE ON PLAN TO SCRAP SCHOOL BOARD SALARIES NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF A bill that would eliminate salaries for school board members and increase scrutiny of the way public-school instructional materials and library books are chosen is now primed for consideration by the full House. The measure (HB 1467) is largely centered on increasing parents’ involvement in the selection of books and other learning materials. The bill would committees convened for the purpose of “ranking, eliminating, or selecting” instructional materials to include parents. The House Appropriations Committee on Monday signed off on the proposal after adding some tweaks. An amendment adopted by the committee made clear that the part of the bill dealing with scrapping board members’ salaries would apply to members who are newly elected or re-elected on or after Aug. 1, 2022. “The intent is to make sure that when members decide to run for the position, they know up front what the situation is with salaries,” Rep. Sam Garrison, a Fleming Island Republican who sponsored the bill, said. The amendment also would allow board members who

wouldn’t receive salaries to receive “reimbursements” of up to $200 for each meeting they attend, up to a maximum of $4,800 per year. Democrats on the panel bristled at capping board members’ yearly compensation at less than $5,000. “We can’t throw money at problems, but we obviously can pay someone a living wage. And I don’t believe that what we’re offering to pay someone in the amendment is a living wage for the amount of meetings (they) have,” Rep. Matt Willhite, D-Wellington, said. But Garrison disagreed. “I would take issue with the notion of talking about this salary, such as it is, as being a living wage. It’s not designed to be. It’s about public service,” he said. The Florida School Boards Association opposes the bill. Danielle Thomas, a lobbyist with the association, said the proposal would create “great inequalities” for school board members across the state and would favor “the elite” who could afford to work for no salary. “School board members in Florida have chosen to take on the responsibility of overseeing the education, safety and well-being of our most precious gift --- our children,” Thomas said. A similar Senate bill (SB 1300) needs approval from the Rules Committee before it can go to the floor. The Senate measure aims to make school board members’ salaries equal to the yearly pay of state legislators. Lawmakers make $29,697 per year.
