rom avant-garde, thought-provoking productions and beloved theatrical classics to children’s productions and everything in between, Pensacola Little Theatre (PLT) has been providing diverse cultural experiences in Northwest Florida for more than 30 years.
The humble beginnings of PLT date back to 1926 when a group of individuals at the old San Carlos Hotel established the Pensacola Civic Drama Players organization which performed dramatic theatre for three years before the onset of the Great Depression. In 1936, after a period of “dark years,” the organization was established through the Works Progress Administration, which provided funding to create theatre companies across the country as part of the federal government’s recovery efforts following the Great Depression. The new organization became officially incorporated one year later as Pensacola Little Theatre, Inc. Early performances were held in the old Chamber Commerce auditorium and later at Pensacola High School, until 1949 when the theatre’s Board of Directors developed a plan for a home that PLT could call its own. In January of 1952, PLT hosted its first show in a World War II-era Quonset. The theatre’s all-volunteer productions continued there through the 1970s. After more than two decades, the Quonset hut began to deteriorate and the Board of Directors felt that renovations would be too costly, so they began to search for a new home for the theatre. In 1977, the Quonset building was sold, and PLT moved into the old Florida Movie House on Palafox Street, but board members and devoted volunteers never gave up the dream of moving the theatre into its own home again. Through a commissioned study, PLT later found that numerous local arts organizations had similar needs. After convincing the Escambia County Commissioners that a central location with space and facilities for existing and new arts groups was needed, PLT was awarded the deed to the old Escambia County Court of Records Building and Jail. Constructed in 1911, the long-abandoned landmark was renovated into what is now the Pensacola Cultural Center and in 1996, PLT proudly hosted its first production—The Wizard of Oz—in its new permanent home at the Pensacola Cultural Center in the heart of downtown Pensacola. Today, the non-profit community theatre serves as a cultural gathering space for the community and is host to numerous
musicals, comedies, dramas, children’s shows, youth acting classes as well as a variety of volunteer opportunities and mission-based fundraisers throughout the year. The cultural center remains PLT’s permanent home for its ambitious annual mainstage production schedule. Armed with a mission to use the theatrical experience to enhance the cultural agenda of our community and develop future generations of performers and patrons of the arts, PLT continues to serve as a mecca of local volunteerism and cultural opportunity for individuals from all walks of life. In early December of 2021, PLT announced the launch of a $3 million capital campaign to redesign the Pensacola Cultural Center following a generous $1 million donation from the family of Dave and Cynthia Clark, who are longtime supporters of the theatre. In honor of the family’s gift, the cultural center will be renamed The Clark Family Cultural Center. “The Clark family’s $1 million gift was introduced to the public by the unveiling of an outdoor digital graffiti display, live indoor performances and confetti-f illed presentation of digital renderings of the

renovate the Pensacola Cultural Center to include new gathering spaces, an art gallery and a rooftop lounge boasting views of Pensacola Bay. “So far, the theatre is a little more than halfway to its goal, including 100 percent participation amongst the PLT Board of Trustees,” Williams-Heath said. The idea was driven by the board of directors and was formalized in part with local branding experts at idgroup, which the theatre has worked with for the past year through funding from their ‘Brand on Us’ grant. The grant is awarded to one local non-profit each year and has been instrumental in helping PLT tell its story and develop awareness throughout the capital campaign. WilliamsHeath explained that the campaign centers on the renaming of our city’s cultural hub— The Clark Family Cultural Center, affectionately known as The Center.

facility’s proposed renovations,” PLT Executive Director Sid Williams-Heath said. “The Clark’s ties to the theatre and interest in redesigning our home to create a grander sense of arrival to Pensacola while providing a home for the arts, motivated their generosity.” This contribution serves as the kick-off to the theatre’s newly-announced capital campaign to raise funds to
“From funding the original multi-million dollar adaptive reuse of the building in the late 80s to paying off the mortgage in 2009, the theatre’s resilience continued,” Williams-Heath explained. “The next goal of the theatre was to fund an endowment, which was successful through 2010. In 2018, the organization began to replace its entire roof, air-conditioning units, fire escape and rigging

systems in preparation for the new campaign. So while the renovations have been ongoing, this reimagination of the building is a complete redesign to better suit the cultural climate and progression of Pensacola and its people.” The $3 million in renovations to the Clark Family Cultural Center will include: • Rooftop venue: water-front, roof-top terrace, lounge and performance space • Theatre overhaul: Upgraded seat upholstering, lighting, flooring, color palette and acoustics • Atrium redesign: collaborative gathering hub and public parlor • Courtroom enhancements: new paint and drapery, versatile illumination and accessibility to the building’s exterior for increased capacity and flow • Gallery repurposing: installation of art gallery hanging system to showcase fine art, removal of the drop ceiling and a restroom renovation • Building-wide installations: self-guided tours throughout The Center showcasing the history of the building alongside various displays of art, culture and heritage • Terrezza expansion: entryway addition to allow seamless interior and exterior access to the building’s old courtroom to better accommodate private events “From the flow of the building, the acoustics of each room, the

ability to collaborate in public parlors for drawing inspiration, the installation of self-guided history tours and the New York City aesthetic to complement and match the big-city talent of our artists - this renovation means growth, sustainability, and excellence for everyone we represent,” Williams-Heath explained. “By supporting our vision, that means you are preserving an iconic staple of the community while investing in the future of creativity and culture.” The theater will continue its fundraising efforts well into 2022 as they prepare to celebrate their 85th season this coming July. The Center is expected to remain operational as construction kicks off in December 2022. The theatre’s renovation will be the largest interior portion of the project, which will begin the day after PLT’s final holiday performance. Construction on the rooftop venue will follow shortly after, with a scheduled completion date of January 2023. “The community helped us create the Cultural Center 30 years ago, and now we humbly ask for your support - big or small - to help expand that vision and secure our legacy— your legacy,” Williams-Heath said. DRIVER’S LICENSE CLINIC TO BE HELD MARCH 25 - REGISTRATION OPENS JANUARY 14 The First Judicial Circuit will host a Driver’s License Clinic on Friday, March 25, 2022, to assist individuals whose licenses have been revoked, suspended, or cancelled. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the M.C. Blanchard Judicial Building. Due to COVID-19, it is possible that restricted access to the courthouse could resume and impact the clinic. If changes do occur, notification and instructions will be sent to all registered participants prior to the clinic. Registration will begin on January 14 at 9 a.m., and is open to the first 150 registered participants. To register, go to https://escambiacountydriverslicenseclinic2022.eventbrite.com. Participants should closely monitor the email address provided at registration, as email will be the primary form of communication between participants and the clinic staff. Additional information may also be requested by email. Failure to provide requested information may result in cancelled registration. Individuals who registered for previous clinics and failed to appear will be placed on the waiting list until all eligible participants have had an opportunity to register. Walk-ins will not be able to participate. Staff from the Florida Department of Revenue, Department of Highway
Safety and Motor Vehicles, Escambia County Clerk of Court, Escambia County Sheriff ’s Office, Office of the State Attorney, and the Office of the Public Defender, along with judges and court staff, will work together to assist registrants and provide individualized information relevant to each participant’s personal circumstances. The goal of the clinic is to provide “onestop shopping” for citizens to interact with the appropriate state agencies and/ or the court so they can determine how to regain their driving privileges. The clinic will not be able to assist individuals with licenses revoked, suspended, or cancelled due to out-of-state matters. Additionally, the clinic will not address pending criminal charges. Driver’s licenses may be suspended for a variety of reasons, including failure to pay traffic tickets or child support, accumulation of too many points on one’s driving record, or designation as a habitual traffic offender. Licenses may also be revoked as a consequence of entering a plea to certain crimes, such as driving under the influence or certain drug-related offenses. A list of frequently asked questions is available at www.firstjudicialcircuit.org. Please email questions to esc.dl.clinic@ flcourts1.gov or call 850-595-4105.

DEMOCRATS EYE ‘POCKETBOOK’ ISSUES, EXPECT ‘CULTURE WARS’ RYAN DAILEY NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE — Outnumbered by Republicans and bracing for conflicts over what they call “culture war” issues, Florida House Democrats laid out some of their top priorities Monday on the eve of the 2022 legislative session. “What we can expect from Republicans in this session will be culture wars that distract us from the real issues at hand,” Rep. Fentrice Driskell, D-Tampa, said during a news conference. Driskell, who is policy chairwoman for the House Democratic Caucus, said Democrats will aim to focus on “pocketbook issues that people care about the most.” “Property-insurance rates, they’re too high,” Driskell said, as an example. “I hear that everywhere I go in my district. People are concerned with property insurance rates. The Republicans have run that into the ground, and they need to own that failure “ Lawmakers are expected to consider
STATE LAUNCHES UNIVERSITY GRADUATION TOOL NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF The state university system on Monday announced the launch of a new online portal designed to provide students with data about graduates in certain degree fields. The “MyFloridaFuture Tool” displays data such as income of graduates by university, degree level and major. Students could research things like “the earning potential for each academic program at 1, 5, and 10 years” after graduation, according to a news release from the university system’s Board of Governors. “MyFloridaFuture is going to bring awareness to students for intentional planning for the future,”
FLORIDA SEES COVID-19 TOTALS SOAR NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Florida totaled nearly 400,000 new COVID-19 cases during the week that ended Thursday, as the highly contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus raced through the state, according to a Department of Health report issued
making changes to the property-insurance system during the 60-day session, after having tried in recent years to address issues such as curbing litigation over insurance claims. The session will formally kick off Tuesday with Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ annual State of the State address. DeSantis has traveled the state in recent weeks releasing a series of proposals that will play a large role in setting the agenda for the session. One of the issues Driskell labeled a distraction is a priority of DeSantis to cement in law a ban on teaching critical race theory in public schools. Critical race theory, which many Democrats argue is not taught in Florida classrooms, is based on a premise that racism is embedded in American institutions. “I’m very concerned, I think our caucus is very concerned, about the governor’s recent pivot to making teachers some sort of boogeyman in his crusade to become the presidential nominee,” Driskell said, referring to widespread speculation that DeSantis could run for president in 2024.
said Nastassia Janvier, who is student body president of Florida State University student and a member of the Board of Governors. “Students will have the opportunity to engage with it whenever they want and can use it as a resource to research different career fields.” The online tool, found at the Board of Governors’ website and on the admissions webpage of each state university, also allows users to search typical loan amounts and loan debt for graduates in various fields of study. The MyFloridaFuture “dashboard” was created as part of a wide-ranging higher-education bill (HB 1261) passed by lawmakers during the 2021 legislative session. The measure also shielded colleges and universities from coronavirus-related lawsuits.
Rep. Ramon Alexander, a Tallahassee Democrat who will become the party’s House leader after the November elections, said proposing such a law about critical race theory strengthens the argument for teaching about institutional racism. “The mere fact that an institution could utilize laws to stop the truth from being told is a justification that we still have structural and institutional racism in America. So, we’re going to focus on making sure that our teachers and our public school system have the resources that they need,” Alexander said. Democrats also are taking aim at another DeSantis proposal aimed at creating a state office that would investigate election-related crimes. Echoing many Democrats’ criticisms after Republican lawmakers passed a controversial elections bill last year, Rep. Tracie Davis, D-Jacksonville, said the governor seeking further changes is “political theater” — particularly because the 2020 elections were run smoothly in the state.
DESANTIS COMMITTEE TOPS $3.6M IN DECEMBER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Gov. Ron DeSantis’ political committee raised nearly $3.67 million in December and ended 2021 with about $70 million in cash on hand, according to a newly filed finance report. The Friends of Ron DeSantis committee raised about $64.3 million during the year and is poised to play a key role in the Republican governor’s re-election bid in November. State political candidates, committees and

Friday. The 397,114 cases during the week continued a dramatic increase that began in mid-December. In all, Florida has totaled 823,153 new cases during the past three weeks, the report showed. During the three preceding weeks, Florida totaled 53,840 new cases. As of Thursday, the state had a reported total of 4.56 million cases and 62,688 COVID-19 deaths since the pandemic started in early 2020.
The Pensacola Cultural Center building—or, The Center—serves as downtown Pensacola’s cultural & artistic hub.
The number of Florida hospital inpatients with COVID-19 has neared 10,000 as the omicron variant of the coronavirus drives up infections across the state, according to data posted Monday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human
“These so-called election investigators are unnecessary, and will be costly to Floridians. And (it’s) a big change to the way these investigations have already been done in the past. We already have state attorneys who investigate crimes like this, but Gov. DeSantis wants to take the authority away from the locals and give it to Tallahassee,” Davis said. Affordable housing, abortion access and immigration policy are other issues that Democrats say will be priorities as they seek to bill themselves as the party of everyday Floridians, while trying to prevent losing key House and Senate seats in the 2022 elections. The session will include redrawing all House, Senate and congressional districts. “All Floridians, regardless of your background, your ethnicity or your creed all have a seat at the table,” Alexander said. “We should not be alienating people and finding so-called boogeymen to distract us from reality. We want to focus on issues that help all Floridians.”
parties face a Monday night deadline for filing December reports. A report for DeSantis’ campaign account had not been posted to the Division of Elections website as of mid-day Monday. The political committee, however, continued piling up money, receiving 23 contributions of $50,000 or more during December. The largest contribution, $500,000, came from the Republican Governors Association, according to the report. Other large contributions included $200,000 from Kane Financial Services LLC of West Palm Beach. The DeSantis committee spent $251,815 during the month.
Services. The data showed that 9,888 inpatients had COVID-19, up from 5,700 a week earlier and up from 8,914 on Friday. Also, the federal agency said Monday a reported 1,158 COVID-19 patients were in intensive-care units, up from 1,015 on Friday. The Florida Department of Health released a report Friday that showed Florida totaled an additional 397,114 reported cases of COVID-19 during the week that ended Thursday.

FEDS OK STATE PLAN FOR EDUCATION MONEY
GOP IMMIGRATION PROPOSAL EMERGES
RYAN DAILEY NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
TALLAHASSEE — The U.S. Department of Education has approved Florida’s plan for how the state intends to spend billions of dollars in federal aid for schools, after money was withheld because of a delay in the state submitting the proposal. Federal officials had been withholding a third of the more than $7 billion dollars that was allocated for Florida schools under the American Rescue Plan Act, a stimulus law that passed last year. About $2.35 billion was released to the state last week. The federal government released the initial two-thirds of each state’s allocation in March, with Florida receiving just shy of $4.7 billion. Under federal guidelines, the state Department of Education is given control over 10 percent of the money for Florida, with the remaining 90 percent going directly to school districts. “I am excited to announce approval of Florida’s plan,” U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement Friday “It is heartening to see, reflected in these state plans, the ways in which states are thinking deeply about how to use American Rescue Plan funds to continue to provide critical support to schools and communities.” The federal education department said Florida’s plan includes expenditures aimed at “addressing the academic impact of lost instructional time” when campuses were shuttered and students were forced to learn online early in the COVID-19 pandemic. The state will use money to implement a tutoring initiative for early grades, invest in summer learning and expanded after-school programs and “support math acceleration and expand computer science credentials in high schools,” among other uses.
Florida’s delay in submitting its plan was a point of friction between the state and federal education departments last year. Ian Rosenblum, a deputy assistant secretary for policy and programs at the federal agency, wrote a letter to state Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran on Oct. 4 that said Florida was the lone state or U.S. territory with a plan still outstanding. “FDOE’s (the Florida Department of Education’s) delay raises significant concerns because of the unnecessary uncertainty it is creating for school districts across the state and because it is hindering their ability to confidently plan for how to use these funds to address the needs of students,” Rosenblum wrote. Jared Ochs, a spokesman for the state education department, disputed in an Oct. 6 email that the state had missed the June 7 deadline. Ochs wrote that the state had notified its federal counterparts in May that the department “would not be able to submit the state plan in June and would require additional time.” Florida nonetheless submitted its plan days after receiving Rosenblum’s letter, on Oct. 7. Corcoran wrote that the state’s plan to spend the money would advance four goals: closing achievement gaps, improving reading and math outcomes, bolstering outcomes in other content areas and enhancing student services and supports. Several congressional Democrats touted the approval of Florida’s plan in a news release sent out by the federal agency Friday. “I am thrilled to see the (U.S.) Department of Education approve Florida’s plan because it will allow us to mitigate learning loss, enhance support services, and promote the mental and physical health of our students,” U.S. Rep. Darren Soto, D-Fla., said in a statement.
TALLAHASSEE — In one of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ priorities for this year’s legislative session, two Republican lawmakers have filed a proposal that seeks to ratchet up immigration enforcement. In the state. Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, and Rep. John Snyder, R-Stuart, filed identical bills (SB 1808 and HB 1355) on Friday, nearly a month after DeSantis announced similar proposals during a news conference in Jacksonville. DeSantis and Attorney General Ashley Moody have criticized Biden administration border policies for months, and the bills came as lawmakers prepare to start the annual legislative session Tuesday — and as DeSantis, Moody and dozens of lawmakers prepare for elections this fall. The proposal would expand a 2019 law that bans so-called “sanctuary cities” in Florida and would crack down on transportation companies that bring undocumented immigrants into the state. The proposal would bar the state and local governments from contracting with such companies “if the carrier is willfully providing any service in furtherance of transporting an unauthorized alien into the State of Florida knowing that the unauthorized alien entered into or remains in the United States in violation of law.” “We just cannot be doing contracts with companies that are knowingly and recklessly facilitating, bringing people here into our state illegally,” DeSantis said during the Dec. 10 news conference at Jacksonville International Airport. The five-page bills filed Friday also would require counties to enter agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to participate in a program in which local law-enforce-

ment officers help in immigration enforcement. As of November, the federal agency had such agreements with 48 Florida counties, according to the agency’s website. In expanding the sanctuary-cities law, the bills would seek to ensure that local governments comply with the proposed requirement of entering agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Also, the proposal would seek to prevent local governments from blocking law-enforcement agencies from sharing information with the state about the immigration status of people in custody. Immigration issues in the past have sparked heated debates in the Legislature and have led to court fights. The 2019 sanctuary-cities law was designed to spur local law-enforcement agencies to fully comply with federal immigration detainers and share information with federal immigration authorities after undocumented immigrants are in custody. But U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom in September ruled that two parts of the sanctuary-cities law violated constitutional due-process rights — a ruling the state has appealed. Bloom pointed to what she described as an “immigrant threat narrative” that helped lead to the law (SB 168). “Based on the evidence presented, the court finds that plaintiffs have proven by a preponderance of the evidence that SB 168 has discriminatory or disparate effects on racial and ethnic minorities, and these discriminatory effects were both foreseeable and known to the Legislature at the time of SB 168’s enactment,” Bloom wrote. After DeSantis announced the new round of immigration proposals in December, Democrats tried to tie the proposals to speculation that DeSantis is planning a bid for the White House in 2024.
