THE FARM PRODUCE MARK ET BUILDING COMMUNIT Y THROUGH FRESH F O OD
by Kelly Oden Photos by Ty and Cat Photography

reating a business model centered on community and f resh produce came naturally to the owners of The Farm Produce Market on Mobile Highway. In 2012, Sandy Veilleux, a former pastry chef and local good food advocate, teamed up with former produce company owners Barbara and Barrie Williams to take over the beloved west side market. Originally established in 1987 by the D’amico family, the trio came together to carry on the tradition after the D’amico family retired.
They set out to create a space that not only supported local farmers and cottage food industries, but also served as a gathering space for the neighborhood—a place to socialize, learn about healthy food and maybe even meet a farmer or two. “I remember putting the keys in the door with Barbara and Barrie. I was just blown away and they completely lit up,’ Veilleux recalled. “I feel like, after that, it’s a blur. Now, all of a sudden it’s been 10 years. We’ve sold retail out of here. We’ve had more than 200 chefs buy wholesale out of here. We’ve helped open restaurants. We’ve worked with local farmers. I just know that we keep building on the idea of being in this
crazy building and honoring a family relationship with produce, whether it’s with our farmers or with our community.” Since 2012, the Farm has expanded rapidly. Perhaps a little too rapidly. Last year, The Farm handed over its wholesale operations to their friends at City Produce. “We just got too big, too fast,” Veilleux said. “We had a waiting list of chefs. I wasn’t popular going out to dinner, let me tell you. So we scaled back and it’s our first full year just being the farmers market.” One of the reasons for the scaling back was the desire to become more involved at the community level. Along with Manna Food Pantries,

this.’ I’m sitting there thinking, ‘that’s mind-bending.’ It was a ‘I’ve never tasted anything like this’ kind of moment, she recalled. “The next phone call I make is to chef Blake and chef Amy at Union Public House. I’m like, where are you? Where are your taste buds? So, we are sitting at the restaurant and they are tasting it—and, you know, the entire time you’re like a little kid. You’re seeing the exact same reaction in somebody else that you just had. They went, ‘Wow. If you don’t do something with this, I’ll never talk to you again,’ which is something we always say to each other. Black Garlic was born out of the idea of creating a flavor that we wanted everybody to try and it hasn’t stopped.” Depending on the bulb size, the garlic is fermented for about 196 hours using a proprietary method. The result is a shelf-stable, smearable paste with a distinct umami flavor reminiscent of balsamic. The paste can be used straight or as a flavor enhancer in any recipe. Black garlic is now on the menu in many local restaurants and it is shipped worldwide. Located at 6404 Mobile Highway in Pensacola, the Farm Produce Market is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. SOLAR CO-OP LAUNCHES FOR PENSACOLA RESIDENTS TO GO SOLAR TOGETHER Nonprofit group Solar United Neighbors announced today the launch of the Pensacola Solar Co-op to help Escambia County residents go solar. “The co-op will enable Pensacola homeowners and business owners to join the growing community of people saving money by harnessing solar power,” said Julia Herbst, Gulf Coast program associate for Solar United Neighbors. “Together, we’re building a movement to transform our electricity system into one that is cleaner, fairer, and shares its benefits more broadly.” The co-op is free to join and open to homeowners and business owners in Pensacola. Together, co-op members will learn about solar energy and leverage their numbers to purchase individual solar systems at a competitive price and top quality. After a competitive bidding process facilitated by SUN, which remains vendor neutral, co-op members will select a single solar company to complete the installations. Joining the co-op does not obligate members to purchase solar. Instead, members will have the option to individually purchase panels based on the installer’s group rate. This co-op is funded by the City of Pensacola and Leon Lowenstein Foundation. Additional partners include 350 Pensacola, 850eco, and Healthy Gulf. “The City of Pensacola strives for the highest quality of life for all citizens. We are continuing these efforts by partnering with SUN to provide cost-saving solar at an affordable rate, create a healthier environment and grow our local economy.” City of Pensacola Sustainability Coordinator Mark Jackson said. “I love having solar on my house for so many reasons,” said John Bachmeier, Escambia Santa Rosa Co-op member. “I love to provide clean, renewable energy for my family and my neighbors

when I overproduce. I love being part of the solution to climate change rather than just talking about it. I love being an example for my kids of sustainable living. I love seeing the electric meter running ‘backwards’ on sunny days and knowing my neighbors are benefitting from my panels. I love hearing my 92-year-old mom say how neat it is that when we go somewhere in my EV, we are driving on sunshine!” SUN has hosted 69 solar co-ops in Florida since 2015. According to the group’s estimates, the 2,102 homes and businesses that now have solar panels because of co-ops represent: 20.5 MW of solar power, $47.9 million in local solar investment, and more than 698.6 million lbs. of lifetime carbon offsets. SUN will host several free information sessions to educate community members about solar energy and the co-op. Individuals interested in going solar can sign up for the co-op or one of the upcoming information sessions at the co-op web page: solarunitedneighbors.org/pensacola. The first informational session is planned for: Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022, 6 p.m. (CST) Virtual Zoom About Solar United Neighbors
Solar United Neighbors is a nonprofit organization that works in Florida and nationwide to represent the needs and interests of solar owners and supporters. Solar co-ops are part of the organization’s mission to create a new energy system with rooftop solar at the cornerstone. Solar United Neighbors holds events and education programs to help people become informed solar consumers, maximize the value of their solar investment, and advocate for fair solar policies.

JUSTICES ORDER NEW TRIALS FOR DEATH ROW INMATES JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday ordered new trials for two Death Row inmates, including for a man convicted in the murders of a Broward County couple after his mother provided key testimony. In somewhat-unusual moves, justices overturned the convictions of Peter Avsenew in the 2010 murders in Broward County and of Jason Simpson, who was convicted of killing a drug dealer and the dealer’s pregnant girlfriend in 1999 in Duval County. In both cases, the Supreme Court found that judges made errors that required new trials. Avsenew was sentenced to death in 2018, while Simpson was sentenced in 2007. Avsenew was convicted in the shooting deaths of Steven Adams and Kevin Powell and taking the couple’s sportutility vehicle and money. Avsenew, who had been staying with the couple, drove to Polk County, where his mother, Jeanne Avsenew, lived. After a series of circumstances, including Avsenew telling his mother he was driving a stolen SUV, she did a computer search and found that he was a “person of interest” in the murders, according to the Supreme Court ruling. She contacted police, and Avsenew was subsequently arrested. But Thursday’s ruling centered on video testimony of Jeanne Avsenew that was used in her son’s trial. The appeal did not take issue with video testimony, which is allowed under a court rule if a witness is unable to attend a trial. Justices, however, said the set-up of the equipment used in the testimony prevented Jeanne Avsenew from seeing her son. That violated a rule that says courts must “keep the defendant in the presence of the witness.” In the unanimous ruling, the Supreme Court said it “does not take lightly the impact of today’s decision. However, the introduction of Ms. Avsenew’s testimony constituted harmful error, and we are bound to rule in a manner that remedies such error.” “We cannot overstate the harmful effect of this testimony having come from not just anyone, but defendant Avsenew’s own mother,” the 16-page ruling said. “Indeed, the jury heard a recording of a phone call placed by Avsenew while he was in jail awaiting trial, wherein he mentioned that the ‘lead witness against me is my mom.’ Without question, the impact of Ms. Avsenew’s incriminating testimony on the jury would have been even greater because she is Avsenew’s mother. The state cannot demonstrate that there is no reasonable possibility that the testimony of Ms. Avsenew — a material state witness — contributed to
JOBLESS CLAIMS UP AS 2022 STARTS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF First-time unemployment claims in Florida doubled during the first week of 2022 from the holiday-shortened final week of 2021. The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday estimated 9,705 initial unemployment claims were filed during the week that ended Jan. 8, up from a revised count of 4,299 for the week ending Jan. 1. The agency initially projected 4,046 claims were filed during the final week of 2021. The 9,705 claims last week were the highest total since 10,110 claims were filed during the week that ended July 24 as the state was facing impacts from COVID-19’s
the jury’s guilty verdicts.” In the Duval County case, the Supreme Court said Simpson should receive a new trial because prosecutors did not disclose that a witness against him was a confidential informant for the state. Simpson was convicted in the murders of drug dealer Archie Howard Crook and Crook’s pregnant girlfriend, Kimberli Kimbler. They were hacked to death with an ax in the bedroom of their home, according to the Supreme Court ruling. The witness whose work as an informant had not been disclosed was Crook’s son, Archie Clyde Crook — identified in the ruling as “Little Archie.” Simpson’s defense attorneys argued during the trial that Little Archie had killed his father and Kimbler. Little Archie had served as an informant against another man, George Michael Durrance, who was described in the ruling as being an associate of the Crook father and son and Simpson in the drug trade. Durrance also was a figure in the Simpson murder case, and the Supreme Court, in a 5-1 decision, said Little Archie’s role as a confidential informant should have been disclosed. The majority opinion said the “relationship between Simpson, Little Archie, and Durrance was of critical importance in this case, and the information Little Archie provided to law enforcement pertaining to Durrance casts a different light on this relationship.” The opinion, shared by Justices Ricky Polston, Jorge Labarga, Alan Lawson, John Couriel and Jamie Grosshans, also said “Little Archie’s testimony and credibility were of significant consequence when we consider the lack of evidence linking Simpson to the scene of the crime.” But Chief Justice Charles Canady dissented, writing that the failure to disclose the information about the informant “was not material and did not prejudice Simpson.” “The fact that Little Archie had been a source to law enforcement in unrelated matters is of little, if any, relevance, and in light of the other information known to the jury about Little Archie, would not have been an indication that he had a particular bias toward law enforcement or the state,” Canady wrote. “There is no reasonable probability that had this information been disclosed to Simpson, the result of Simpson’s trial would have been different.” Justice Carlos Muniz was recused from the case. Simpson, now 48, and Avsenew, now 37, are inmates at Union Correctional Institution, according to the Florida Department of Corrections website.
delta variant. Nationally, an estimated 230,000 claims were filed last week, up 23,000 from the prior week. Last week, the Labor Department reported the U.S. added 199,000 jobs in December, below expectations of economists. But with wages rising 0.6 percent — an indication that employers are still struggling to find and retain workers — the national unemployment rate dropped from 4.2 percent to 3.9 percent. Florida in November had a 4.5 percent unemployment rate, with an estimated 483,000 Floridians out of work from a labor force of 10.63 million. The state Department of Economic Opportunity will release a report showing December numbers on Jan. 21. Florida’s unemployment claims in recent months have been far below totals in 2020, after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic caused massive job losses.

REDISTRICTING PLANS HEAD TO FULL SENATE JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE — New congressional and legislative district lines were advanced to the Senate floor on Thursday despite some criticism that more needs to be done to address majorityminority districts. The Senate Reapportionment Committee approved proposals for revamped congressional districts (SB 102) and Senate districts (SJR 100). Also, 40 cards were drawn from a glass container that randomly designated each proposed Senate district with an odd or even number. Districts designated odd will be up for election in 2022 and again in 2024, which could allow a number of freshman senators — including, Ileana Garcia, R-Miami, Jim Boyd, R-Brandenton, Ana Maria Rodriguez, R-Doral, Jason Brodeur, R-Sanford, and Jennifer Bradley, R-Fleming Island — to serve an extra two years beyond the ordinary eight years required by voter-approved term limits. Districts with even numbers would have elections in 2022 and 2026. All 40 Senate districts are up for election this year as part of the once-adecade reapportionment process. During the 2024 and 2026 elections, Senate candidates will run for four-year terms. Senate Reapportionment Chairman Sen. Ray Rodrigues, R-Estero, said he believes the card draw was “equally” as random as a bingo cage and colored ping-pong balls that were used in 2012 to determine odd and even districts. The full Senate is expected to take up the proposed maps Wednesday. While the Senate is drawing its own lines, it will ultimately have to reach agreement with the House on congressional lines that will then go to the governor. The House is at least a week behind in its map-making process, as it has to draw 120 House districts. Similar to the Senate, the House is drawing its own map, along with a congressional map. New districts need to be in place before qualifying for this year’s elections begins June 13. Rodrigues wouldn’t say that he expects legal challenges. But he said he was advised during a conference in July that about 2,400 court cases were filed
PLAN TO BOLSTER MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES GETS NOD NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Lawmakers are starting to take action on a bill that aims to connect family members of students receiving mentalhealth services with additional resources. The House Early Learning & Elementary Education Subcommittee advanced the measure (HB 899) with a unanimous vote on Thursday. The proposal would require schools to provide parents of students receiving mentalhealth services with information about additional behavioral-health services available through the school or in the community. To meet the requirement, schools could provide internet addresses for web-based directories of services. The measure also would connect people living in the same home as a student receiving mental-health assistance with
SUPREME COURT TO HEAR PROPERTY TAX FIGHT NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF The Florida Supreme Court on Friday said it will take up a dispute about whether a resident was entitled to a full homestead property-tax exemption after renting two bedrooms to tenants. Sarasota County Property Appraiser Bill Furst took the issue to the Supreme Court after the 2nd District Court of
nationally during the last redistricting cycle. “What I took away from that is, you’re more likely to have litigation than not,” Rodrigues said. “So, as you move forward, you prepare as if it’s going to happen but hope that it doesn’t.” The Republican-dominated committee rejected an amendment by Sen. Audrey Gibson, D-Jacksonville, to address a majority-minority Senate district in Northeast Florida, where populations have grown and shifted over the past decade. Gibson, who is Black, serves in such a district but cannot run again this year because of term limits. “African-American districts, or those that give them the ability to elect the candidate of their choice, have not expanded in terms of square miles since the previous map was drawn,” Gibson said. “It’s impossible for that to be true.” Gibson said she objected to both maps because, “When we have an opportunity to do better, we should.” Sen. Randolph Bracy, D-Ocoee, voted against the Senate map, and Sen. Darryl Rouson, D-St. Petersburg, reversed his vote to “no” on the congressional lines. Rouson said he favors keeping Congressional District 14, a seat held by Democrat Kathy Castor, solely within Hillsborough County and avoiding splits of cities in Pinellas County that are currently in District 13. Steven Mangual, an advocate for LatinoJustice PRLDEF, voiced opposition to both maps for failing to provide proportional representation for Hispanics, despite “massive” Hispanic population growth in Florida over the past decade. Mangual also contended the redistricting process hasn’t been fully accessible to limited English-proficient citizens. He noted that sections of the legislative redistricting website are only available in English and that the number of Hispanic majority-minority districts is unchanged from the current lines. “Spanish-dominant Floridians deserve to have their voices heard in meaningful ways and participate in this redistricting process,” Mangual said. Asked about Mangual’s comments, Rodrigues replied, “I am 100 percent confident that we are fully compliant with all federal requirements, constitutional requirements and state statutes.”
behavioral-health services, if “enhancements in those individuals’ behavioral health would contribute to the improved well-being of the student.” House bill sponsor Christine Hunchofsky, D-Parkland, said the proposal will “help both the student and their family get the care they need.” The measure received backing from Tony Montalto, whose daughter Gina was one of 17 people who were killed during a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. Montalto is president of the group Stand With Parkland, which advocates for safety and mental-health reforms in schools. “This particular bill will help us by not only looking at the student but looking at the whole family,” Montalto told reporters following Thursday’s meeting. “It’s the environment that the student is in that we need to fix, and this bill will help provide information (on) services that are available.” An identical measure (SB 1240) has been filed in the Senate.
Appeal in 2020 rejected a decision by Furst that homeowner Rod Rebholz was entitled to a homestead exemption on only 85 percent of the residence because bedrooms were rented out. Rebholz filed a lawsuit to challenge the property appraiser’s decision. A Sarasota County circuit judge sided with Rebholz, and the appeals court agreed that the home should not be divided up for tax purposes. An order issued Friday by the Supreme Court did not set a date for oral arguments.

Legal Notice Senior Management Pace Center for Girls, Inc. (“Pace”) recently became aware that participant information for some of its Florida students was improperly accessed during a data incident which was discovered the week of December 13, 2021. The improper access appears to have arisen from an intrusion into certain infrastructure systems in January 2021. At this time, Pace has identified the following types of student information that were improperly accessed: full name, address/phone number, date of birth, Florida Department of Juvenile Justice identification numbers, enrollment data, behavioral health information and parent/ guardian names. Pace recommends that students and their parents take immediate steps to protect the students from any potential harm resulting from the data incident, such as actively monitoring accounts, Explanation of Benefits (EOBs), and credit bureau reports. Pace also recommends students register a fraud alert with the three major credit bureaus: Equifax (800-525-6285), Experian (888-397-3742), or TransUnion (800-680-7289). Parents may also wish to visit IdentityTheft.gov, “or browse recovery steps” and then select “Children’s personal information.” Pace has and continues to take prompt action to investigate the incident and improve its security, including engaging an outside cybersecurity firm, securing network and physical computer access, and assessing data protection and gateway security systems. Pace greatly values the privacy and security of the information of students, and is diligently working to ensure this data incident is properly addressed. If you have any questions about the data incident or the personal information that Pace maintains about its students, or would like to sign your student up for credit monitoring services for the next year free of charge, please contact Pace toll free at (833)264-0157 or by e-mail at Incident Report@pacecenter.org. 2WR1/19-1/26PLN
