T
he Cincinnati Enquirer called it “A sassy, hold-on-to-your-seats theatrical adventure... wonderfully wild and raucous,” and for the first time in Pensacola, The Gordon Community Art Center and PenArts will present The Revolutionists.
The comedic play is a revolutionary dream-fugue based on a fictional imagining of three historical f igures coming together.. Original playwright, Lauren Gunderson, is said to be the most popular and prolific American playwright today. Set in 1793 amid the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution, this comedic yet moving tale, follows a quartet of women who historically existed at the same time and place but never actually met as they fight for equality, justice and their rightful place in history. The play blends the stories of four infamous women, three of whom are historical figures: Olympe de Gouges, a playwright; Charlotte Corday, the assassin of Jean Paul Marat; and Marie Antionette, the infamously dethroned queen. The fourth woman is a compilation of the strong women in Saint Domingue who fought against racism and gender inequality. Owner of The Gordon Community Art Center and PenArts Artistic Director, Christine Kellog, will direct this Pensacola premiere and performances will be held July 21 to 24 at The Gordon Community Art Center in downtown Pensacola. “While the stor y is a creatively imagined meeting of these women and takes place almost 230 years ago, many of the issues remain relevant today. It is a play that will make you laugh, think and feel,” Kellog said. In 2017, Kellog and a group
of local creatives established the nonprof it organization PenArts as a way to help bring the local community together. In 2020, PenArts off icially moved to its location at The Gordon where they continue to host their programs and mainstage productions. PenArts members also assist with managing the facility so that other members of the community can use it to host classes and performances. Since its inception, PenArts has produced eight professionally-staged production premiers in Pensacola. This small nonprofit features local talent, pays all actors and creative teams and has a large and active community outreach program. “Now, in its new home at The Gordon Community Arts Center in the Historic BelmontDeVilliers District, PenArts truly uses the arts to help bring the community together with open mics, artist mingles, afternoon jazz concerts, dance classes, community gatherings and many other classes and productions every month,” Kellog said. The PenArts production of The Revolutionists will feature a younger cast than the cast of the original show, which was originally produced and performed at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. As the production is truly an ensemble show, the lead actors in order of appearance are Keeley Morgan, Klarissa Moore, Harper Garcia and Carissa Ferguson.
“It is a talented group of young women, and three of them are appearing with PenArts for the first time. Harper Garcia was last seen in the PenArts production of I AND YOU. They all have extensive performing resumes, and we are thrilled that Keeley Morgan (a UWF student), Klarissa Moore (new to Pensacola from Oklahoma) and Carissa Ferguson (a Pensacola native currently studying at the University of Alabama) are joining us,” Kellog said. Additionally, The Revolutionists will feature the work of sound designer and PenArts
taining and interesting to watch because we get to see the human side of an important historical figure that most people have only ever read about if they have even heard of her at all. I am so excited to share her quirky character with everyone and let people learn a little more about French playwright Olympe de Gouges,” Morgan explained. According to Kellog, audience members can expect witty dialogue in an anachronistic play. Although the production is set in 1793, some of the banter is straight out of the 21st Century.

It is a play that will make you laugh, think and feel.” Music Director, Tom Baroco (Director of Music at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart); Costume Designer, Kristen Taylor (graduate of UWF); Assistant to the Director, Bethany Elswick (MFA student at Regents University); and Social Media Content Director, Jenna Smith (UWF senior). “We are grateful to the theater department at UWF for their help with this production,” Kellog said. Keeley Morgan will be performing with PenArts for the first time in her role as Olympe de Gouges, who was a feminist playwright and activist for abolition and women’s rights during revolutionary France. “She is incredibly nerdy and fun, but at the same time desperately wants to make an impact on the world and be remembered. Her character is so enter-
The Revolutionists will pose audiences with the following questions: • Are terror and violence necessary components of change? • Can art (in its various forms) lead to positive societal changes? • What is the value of theater and art today? • Can one person make a difference? “The show is not vulgar or risqué, but the topics are rather cerebral and may go above the heads of younger viewers. Anyone from middle school and up, French history buffs, theater buffs, and those who enjoy intelligent dialogue will enjoy this play,” Kellog explained. “I am beyond excited about the show! We officially start rehearsals at the beginning of July. So
far, we have all been doing a lot of character work and line memorization on our own and with the help of our amazing director, Christine Kellogg, and Assistant to the Director, Bethany Elswick. My castmates are extremely talented so I cannot wait for audiences to see what we have in store with this incredibly entertaining show,” Morgan said. Kellog added that they have recently implemented a “PenArts Patrons Program.” Patrons can choose from three tiers of donations to give. A “Curtain Call” level tax-deductible gift of $50 to $100 will guarantee a patron two tickets to an upcoming production and your name in the program. An “Applause” level tax-deductible gift of over $100 and up to $500 will guarantee a patron two tickets to an upcoming production in preferred seating, their name in the program and their name or logo on our social media as a sponsor or donor. Finally, the “Standing Ovation” taxdeductible gift of $500 or more will guarantee the patron two tickets to our productions in preferred seating, your name in the program, your name or logo on our social media as a sponsor or donor and an invitation to an event with the cast and crew. Performances will be held July 21, 22 and 23 at 7:30 pm, and July 24 at 2:30 pm at 306 N DeVilliers Street in downtown Pensacola. Tickets are currently on sale for $15 each and can be purchased on Eventbrite.com. The runtime for this production is a little under two hours. SERVICE IN LEADERSHIP AWARD HONORS FORMER FLORIDA BAR PRESIDENT AND LOCAL LEADER ALAN BOOKMAN Calling it a testament to his impact on the legal profession, friends of a recently deceased former Bar president have raised more than $100,000 for the “Alan B. Bookman Service in Leadership Award.” Bookman, a senior attorney with Emmanuel, Sheppard & Condon in Pensacola, died December 24, 2021, at the age of 74. Bookman served as Bar president from 2004-2005. Ft. Lauderdale attorney Adele Stone, a former Florida Bar Foundation president and one of the award organizers, said Bookman’s loss created a void that will be difficult to fill. “We were not only Bar friends we were personal friends, and we wanted to do something,” she said. “He really was such a powerful force, yet, not in a way that you would say he was dictating that by force, it was just there.” U.S. District Judge Patricia Seitz, a former Bar president and award organizer, served with Bookman in the 1970s on what was then known as the “Young Lawyers Section.” “Even then, Alan stood out as an insightful, kind, and generous counselor,” Seitz said. “As a leader, he was one to whom everyone turned – he was our unifying force for the good and just problem-solving approach.” Former President Greg Coleman served on the Board of Governors during Bookman’s presidency, and calls his former friend, a “true servant leader.” “To this day, he is one of the most
special people I have ever served with,” Coleman said. “He led with a great deal of intelligence, fairness, and humility. I will always treasure my time with him. I miss him.” The tribute began forming hours after Bookman’s death, when Jacksonville’s Hank Coxe started reaching out to fellow former Bar presidents and leaders. Disappointed that the COVID-19 pandemic prevented many from attending the funeral, Coxe said the group wanted to create a tribute that would perpetuate Bookman’s memory and honor his service. “Alan brought to the table a certain level of leadership and spirit that the rest of us don’t have, but wish that we did,” Coxe said. Former President Jesse Diner puts it this way: “Friends of Alan got together to create a meaningful annual award in his name which captured his lifelong service in leadership and would recognize other lawyers who demonstrated similar attributes.” Former board member David Rothman considers Bookman an “extraordinary person” and a “terrific leader.” “He led by example and in so doing made everyone and everything he touched better,” Rothman said. Last month, the group designated Bookman, posthumously, as the inaugural recipient, and presented the award to his widow, Connie, at the President’s Dinner during the 2022 Annual Convention in Orlando.
The group established the Alan B. Bookman Memorial Fund that will be managed by The Florida Bar Foundation, Stone said. This winter, members of the Board of Governors will begin accepting nominations from their respective circuits, Coxe said. The winner will be selected by a newly created entity, “Alan B. Bookman Service in Leadership, Inc.” The recipient will designate a charitable organization that will receive a cash award from income generated by the Memorial Fund, Stone said. Alan B. Bookman Service in Leadership, Inc., will determine the size of the donation, Stone said. “So, if you are the award winner next year, you have the right to designate a notfor-profit which meets the criteria of the foundation,” she said. Nominees must be Florida Bar members in good standing and practicing for at least 10 years, Coxe said. Other criteria include such things as, “meaningful service,” “reputation as a positive role model,” “an individual whose efforts, courage, litigation, or innovative legal work results in the creation of a more just society,” and “a career marked by professionalism, civility and humility.” Bookman set a high bar, said former President Edith Osman. “This award was created by friends of Alan to honor and perpetuate the spirit of a person who was loyal, selfless, and
committed to the Bar, the community and above all else his friends,” she said. “We hope that the creation of the Alan B. Bookman Award will encourage others to emulate his good work.” When he thinks about Bookman’s legacy, Coxe said his thoughts turn to the author Harper Lee. “As you grow up, always tell the truth, do no harm to others, and don’t think you are the most important being on Earth. Rich or poor, you then can look anyone in the eye and say, ‘I’m probably no better than you, but I’m certainly your equal.” The following are the award organizers: • Hank Coxe – former president of The Florida Bar • Patricia Seitz – senior United States district judge (SDFL) • John F. Harkness, Jr., – former executive director, The Florida Bar • David Rothman – former member of the Board of Governors • Miles McGrane – former president of the The Florida Bar • Adele Stone – former president of The Florida Bar Foundation • Jesse Diner – former president of The Florida Bar • Greg Coleman – former president of The Florida Bar • Edith Osman – former president of The Florida Bar • Kim Bald – former member of the Board of Governors • Adam White – former president of the Young Lawyers Division

UNITED WAY OF WEST FLORIDA ANNOUNCES GRANT AWARDS United Way of West Florida recently awarded $480,000 in grants to 25 local nonprofit agencies in support of 29 programs through the organization’s Community Investment Process. Programs operated by these agencies provide critical services to individuals and families across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties in the areas of education, financial stability, and health. Grants are awarded through a competitive process. Community volunteers spend months reviewing applications and listening to presentations from applying agencies before making recommendations to United Way of West Florida’s Board of Directors for final approval. “I appreciate all the volunteers who worked so hard during this process,” said Todd Phillips, Chair of the Community
Impact Committee and Manager, Mortgage Loan Operations and Real Estate Lending at Navy Federal Credit Union. “While we wish we had the funding to give grants to all the programs, we have to make tough decisions every year. Our community is fortunate to have so many incredible nonprofits.” “This year was especially tough,” said Laura Gilliam, United Way of West Florida President and CEO. “We’ve seen a decline in fundraising revenue, made worse by the pandemic. We are very thankful for the organizations and individuals who continue to support United Way of West Florida, whose generosity makes these grants possible.” Grant awards by focus area are listed below. FPL DROPS WINTER POWER PROPOSAL JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE — Florida Power & Light on Monday backed away from a controversial proposal that would have used a severe winter storm in 1989 as a basis for future power-plant projects. FPL filed a notice at the state Public Service Commission that said it was withdrawing the proposal from a normally routine process of utilities updating what are known as “10-year site plans” for projects. Under the proposal, the 1989 storm would have been factored into plans for expanding the capacity of power plants and making other changes to handle “peak” electricity demand during the winter. But the proposal drew opposition from the state Office of Public Counsel, which represents consumers in utility issues, and other groups as it could have helped lead to potentially costly projects. FPL said it developed the proposal after studying massive outages caused by cold weather in February 2021 in Texas. In a statement Monday about withdrawing the proposal, FPL cited the Texas storm, as well as the 1989 storm and a 2010 winter storm in Florida. “FPL has a duty and responsibility to deliver 24/7 electricity to more than half of Florida, and we constantly plan for both hot and cold weather scenarios which could realistically impact our ability to keep the lights on,” the statement said. “The 2021 Texas winter weather event that took the lives of more than 240 Texans is an example of an extreme scenario that could affect Florida — just as it did in 1989 and 2010. Ensuring there is adequate electric generation during extreme weather scenarios is never an exact science. It requires long-term planning and forward thinking. The winterization approach we filed as part of our Ten-Year Site Plan and Storm Protection Plans was created to protect our customers from these potential scenarios, but the feedback offered by the Florida Public Service Commission staff, the Office of Public Counsel and
PROTECTIONS EXTENDED FOR VENEZUELANS IN U.S. NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF In an issue that drew heavy attention from Florida lawmakers, the Biden administration on Monday extended temporary protected status for Venezuelans in the U.S. The Department of Homeland Security announced the immigration protections would remain in place through March 2024 for about 340,000 Venezuelans who had started residing in the U.S. before March 8, 2021. The protections were due to run out in September, and the federal government had until Monday to act on the extension. State Sen. Annette Taddeo, a Miami Democrat running for Congress, described the extension as providing “a candle of hope” for people who “fled a nation that has been led down a path of decay.” Taddeo was one of 44 state legislators who signed a letter to Biden last week calling for the continued protection of displaced Venezuelans. Democratic gubernatorial candidates Charlie Crist and Nikki Fried also made statements last week calling for an extension of the protected status.
INPATIENTS WITH COVID-19 TOP 4,000 NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services posted data Monday that showed more than 4,000 Florida hospital inpatients had COVID-19. The
other organizations indicates that they don’t share our concerns.” During a hearing last month, state Deputy Public Counsel Charles Rehwinkel said the proposal would deviate from a planning process that electric utilities have long used. He and other opponents also disputed a connection to the Texas outages, pointing to issues such as a different regulatory structure in Texas. Rehwinkel called the FPL proposal a “novel hypothesis.” “The past 33 years, neither FPL nor any other utility has seen fit to apply this historical (1989) event to its expansion, so why now?” Rehwinkel said during the hearing. “Well, the answer is, there’s no good evidence-based reason to change the process.”’ The FPL proposal called for upgrading existing power plants to add 700 megawatts of generation capacity to help meet peak winter demand. Also, it would have sought to “repurpose” five plants that had been slated to be shut down so they could be used if extreme winter weather is forecast. During last month’s hearing, Andrew Whitley, manager of integrated resource planning at FPL, said it would cost an estimated $140 million to make the upgrades and that the repurposing costs would be “minimal.” FPL has used a planning process that involved looking at a 50 percent probability that a “peak load” will be higher than forecast and a 50 percent probability that it will be lower than forecast. But in the proposal, FPL said severe cold over several days could lead to electricity use that is far higher than expected. “In the 1989 event, the electrical heating loads were so high that FPL could not serve all of the customer demand,” the proposal said. “This resulted in large numbers of customers experiencing periods in which power to their homes could not be delivered, i.e., customers experienced ‘rolling blackouts.’” The December 1989 storm brought snow to parts of the state and caused problems such as airports and interstates being shut down.
In a statement announcing the extension, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said, “We will continue to work with our international partners to address the challenges of regional migration while ensuring our borders remain secure.” U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., was among lawmakers who wanted the federal government to expand the protection to Venezuelans who continue to flee the Maduro regime. “While I’m pleased about this essential extension, I strongly urge the president to offer that same refuge to Venezuelans who arrived after that same date (March 8, 2021), because nothing has changed in Venezuela, and in fact, has only gotten worse,” Wasserman Schultz said in a statement Monday. “They too live with the same fear of being forced to return to Maduro’s brutal and repressive state, and their safety is just as vital as we all work to restore democracy and peace to Venezuela.” In March, 15 members of Florida’s congressional delegation, representing both parties, urged Biden and Mayorkas to extend and redesignate temporary protected status for Venezuelans because of the “political instability caused by Maduro’s authoritarian regime.”

ABORTION LAW FOES OBJECT TO FAST-TRACKING CASE JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE — Attorneys for abortion clinics and a physician objected Monday to fast-tracking a legal fight about a new Florida law that prevents abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy and disputed that a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade affects the case. The attorneys filed a response after Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office last week requested that the case effectively bypass the 1st District Court of Appeal and go to the Florida Supreme Court. Moody’s office made the request after Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper issued a temporary injunction against the 15-week abortion limit, ruling it violated a privacy clause in the Florida Constitution. The state quickly appealed Cooper’s ruling to the 1st District Court of Appeal and asked for what is known as “certification” to move it quickly to the Supreme Court. But in the response Monday, attorneys for the abortion clinics and physician disputed that “urgency” exists to fast-track the case. They filed the lawsuit June 1 and focused on the Florida Constitution’s privacy clause, which has long played a key role in supporting abortion rights in the state. “Florida’s Constitution anticipates district courts deciding constitutional challenges before Supreme Court review,” the response said. “The state cites no authority to show that a hope of overturning decades of Florida Supreme Court precedent justifies disregarding this normal appellate progression.” The response also fired back against arguments by Moody’s office that the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 24 ruling that overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion-rights decision bolsters the state’s position on the 15-week limit. “Floridians’ right to abortion is rooted in the privacy clause in the Florida Constitution — a clause, adopted in 1980, that has no analogue in the
PARTIES SINK MONEY INTO SENATE RACE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF In a sign of the competitiveness of the Central Florida district, Republican and Democratic leaders are spending heavily in the Senate race between Sen. Jason Brodeur, R-Sanford, and Rep. Joy Goff-Marcil, D-Maitland. Newly filed finance reports show the Florida Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee, which is headed by incoming Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, provided $60,257 in in-kind
STORM COULD DOUSE NORTHWEST FLORIDA NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Emergency-management off icials advised Panhandle residents to pay attention to a storm system that moved into the northern Gulf of Mexico on Monday. The unnamed system, which had a 30 percent chance of becoming a tropical storm by the end of the week, is
federal Constitution and therefore is entirely unaffected by Dobbs (the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade),” the response said. In its request to speed the case to the Supreme Court, Moody’s office said the appeal of Cooper’s temporary injunction “raises questions of exceptional public importance that warrant immediate resolution by the Florida Supreme Court. This (1st District) Court should so certify this appeal (to the Supreme Court) as soon as practicable.” The state’s lawyers also pointed to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling, writing that in the past, “the Florida Supreme Court has relied on the U.S. Supreme Court’s abortion decisions in reasoning that Florida’s privacy clause ‘implicate(s)’ the right to abortion.” The state’s f iling said the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a Mississippi case, “rejected the notion that a right to abortion ‘is an integral part of a broader entrenched right,’ whether characterized as a ‘right to privacy’” or as “the freedom to make ‘intimate and personal choices’ that are ‘central to personal dignity and autonomy.’” “That sea-change in federal law plainly warrants reconsideration of the Florida Supreme Court’s interpretation of Florida’s own constitutional right to privacy, and there will be great uncertainty in Florida until it does so,” the state’s lawyers wrote. While Cooper issued a temporary injunction against the 15-week law, the injunction was placed on hold when the state filed the notice of appeal at the Tallahassee-based 1st District Court of Appeal. That is because the notice triggered an automatic stay, under an appellate rule. Attorneys for the abortion clinics and physician asked Cooper to vacate the automatic stay. They pointed, in part, to “irreparable harm” if the 15-week limit remains in effect during the appeal. Cooper had not ruled on vacating the stay as of early Monday afternoon, according to a court docket.
aid to Brodeur’s campaign during June. The money paid for such things as campaign staff and polling. Meanwhile, the Florida Democratic Party funneled $57,683 in in-kind aid to Goff-Marcil’s campaign during the month. Brodeur and Goff-Marcil are running in the newly redrawn Senate District 10 in Seminole and Orange counties. Brodeur was elected to the Senate in 2020 after a fiercely contested campaign in what was then Senate District 9 in Seminole and Volusia counties.
