lue Morning Gallery, more commonly known by locals as Pensacola’s “fun” art gallery, celebrated its 25th anniversary on April 19 with a festive gathering featuring local art, live entertainment and good company. The local co-op gallery, located at 21 South Palafox Place in downtown Pensacola, first opened its doors in 1997 with just 12 members. Today, Blue Morning Gallery has grown to become a Pensacola staple that showcases award-winning artists from across the region. Drawing in hundreds of art lovers and talented artists each year, Blue Morning Gallery continues to remain a “must visit destination” for local art. Blue Morning Gallery was initially founded to showcase the work of local artists and encourage the development of new creative talent within the local community. “Our goal is to be the catalyst for life-long discovery, appreciation and exploration of the arts. Our colorful, cooperative fine arts gallery features the work of more than 60 local artists,” Blue Morning Gallery Director of Marketing Suzanne Tuzzeo said. A local artist herself, Tuzzeo has served as the gallery’s director of marketing since 2012. As a photographer, Tuzzeo uniquely captures the ordinary and not-so-ordinary elements and locations; she seeks out distinctive locations, often off the beaten path, as well as a selection of local icons and gives them her own creative twist. Her work offers an inimitable combi-
nation of the familiar and the strange. “Attentively tweaking each individual photo with my personal use of color, which is accentuated by the distinct custom finishing, allows me to produce exclusive photographs that offer the individual perspectives you will find in my work,” Tuzzeo said. Blue Morning Gallery operates as a cooperative gallery, or co-op, meaning that each member is also an owner. Members work in shifts to help keep the gallery up and running, and everyone is involved in the decision-making process regarding the performance of the shared gallery space. The gallery showcases art mediums of all types: painting, photography, pottery, woodworking, stained glass and other handcrafted pieces ranging from the complex to the practical, eccentric to
nostalgic and small works to large formats. Blue Morning Gallery actively participates in downtown and other local community events such as downtown Pensacola Gallery Nights, weekly Palafox Markets and other pop-up events throughout the year. “Blue Morning Gallery also mentors emerging artists, as is evidenced by the $1,000 scholarship we award each year to an outstanding University of West Florida art student,” Tuzzeo said. Every two months, Blue Morning Gallery hosts a series of artist spotlights featuring a variety of artists and mediums. Each spotlight typically showcases between two and four artists. In addition to the artist spotlights, gallery members host their own events and art showcases within the shared space throughout the year. Recently, Blue Morning Gallery celebrated its 25th Anniversary by hosting a special event for the community in order to commemorate the momentous occasion. Artists, guests and gallery members gathered for an evening of appetizers, live music and a special showcase featuring local, origi-

ATTORNEY JOE ZARZAUR ACHIEVES RECERTIFICATION IN CIVIL TRIAL LAW WITH THE NATIONAL BOARD OF CIVIL TRIAL ADVOCACY The National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA) is pleased to announce that attorney Joe Zarzaur, founder and lead attorney at Zarzaur Law, P.A., has successfully achieved recertification as a civil trial advocate. The NBTA was formed out of a strong conviction that both the law profession and its clients would benefit from an organization designed specifically to create an objective set of standards illustrating an attorney’s experience and expertise in the practice of trial law. Joe Zarzaur is part of a growing number of trial attorneys that have illustrated their commitment to bettering the legal profession by successfully completing a rigorous application process and providing the consumer of legal services with an objective measure by which to choose qualified and experienced legal counsel. The elaborate screening of credentials that all NBTA board certified attorneys must successfully complete includes demonstration of substantial trial experience, submission of judicial and peer references to attest to their competency, attendance of continuing legal education courses and proof of good standing. Board Certification is the highest, most stringent, and most reliable honor an attorney can achieve. Board certifications are the only distinctions awarded by non-profit organizations. The NBTA
as well as all board certifying organizations are committed to safeguarding the public’s ability to choose a good attorney. The National Board of Trial Advocacy originally selected Joe as a member in 2011. This is a group of trial lawyers whose mission it is to preserve the civility in our country’s civil jury system. Members are selected by existing members and must be chosen based upon their competency and professionalism. Joe has been a continuous member of NBTA and has also served as President of the local chapter. He has also been board certified by the Florida Bar in Civil Trial since 2010. Giving back to the community is also an important part of the mission for Zarzaur Law, P.A. Joe has continuously supported local Escambia and Santa Rosa County charities through the Zarzaur Law Legal Graffiti event as well as direct gifts to the firm’s adopted two main charities, Gulf Coast Kids’ House and Favor House. Approximately three percent of American lawyers are board certified, and Joe Zarzaur is a member of a very select group who has taken the time to prove competence in their specialty area and earn board certification. For more information on Joe Zarzaur, please visit zarzaurlaw.com and nbtalawyers.org.

ELECTIONS TAKE SHAPE AS CANDIDATE QUALIFYING STARTS
HIGHER ROOM RATES COULD PUT DAMPER ON TOURISM

TALLAHASSEE — Congressman Al Lawson, a Tallahassee Democrat whose district was overhauled as part of the once-a-decade reapportionment process, helped launch this year’s candidate qualifying period Monday by filing paperwork to challenge Republican incumbent Neal Dunn in another North Florida district. Lawson submitted his paperwork in person at the state Division of Elections to run against Dunn, of Panama City, in Congressional District 2. Lawson appeared shortly after qualifying started at noon and said he wanted to make sure he would have time to respond if elections officials had questions about the documents before qualifying ends Friday. “I can remember the time I was out in Denver and tried to file paperwork and the (FedEx) plane crashed,” Lawson, who has represented Congressional District 5, said. “We were trying to get on a bus to get back here. So, I want to make sure if anything is wrong with the paperwork, you know, I got until Friday for them to get in contact with me.” Two decades ago, Lawson, at the time a state senator, was among several candidates left scrambling after their qualifying papers were lost when a Federal Express flight struck trees short of a runway at the Tallahassee airport at the end of the qualifying week. By late afternoon Monday, Lawson and Dunn were listed on the Division of Elections website as having qualified. This year’s qualifying period will end at noon Friday, when candidates for governor, three state Cabinet posts, a U.S. Senate seat, 28 congressional seats and all 160 legislative seats have to make sure their paperwork is submitted. Candidates can qualify by submitting petition signatures or paying fees. For example, legislative candidates with political parties can pay $1,781.82 to run for legislative seats. The cost is $1,187.88 for candidates without party affiliations. Congressional seats require $10,440 to run with a party tag and $6,960 for unaffiliated candidates. U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and his Democratic challenger, U.S. Rep. Val Demings of Orlando, paid the fees for their campaigns. Candidates for governor must pay $8,050.86 with party affiliations and $5,367 without. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis paid. Dot-Inman Johnson, a former Tallahassee mayor, dropped off paperwork Monday at the Division of Elections for Democratic Congressman Charlie Crist’s gubernatorial run.
Lawson was joined by several candidate surrogates in submitting paperwork at the state’s R.A. Gray Building, which also has a “drop box” at the entrance for candidate papers. DeSantis pushed a redistricting plan through the Legislature in April that completely revamped Lawson’s District 5, which has stretched from Jacksonville to west of Tallahassee. The new map condensed the district in the Jacksonville area. Lawson’s decision to challenge Dunn in Northwest Florida’s District 2 will be one of the higher-profile races of the year. Most congressional and legislative races involving incumbents likely will not be competitive. As the qualifying period got underway, 28 of the 120 state House districts had only a single announced candidate. In the Senate, 11 of the 40 districts did not have competition as of early Monday afternoon. If left unchanged, that could mean free passes to re-election for incoming Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples; Sen. Linda Stewart, D-Orlando; Sen. Danny Burgess, R-Zephyrhills; Sen. Victor Torres, D-Kissimmee; Sen. Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart; Sen. Jason Pizzo, D-North Miami Beach; and Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez, R-Doral. Four House members looking to move up to the Senate also had no announced competition as of early Monday afternoon: Rep. Clay Yarborough, R-Jacksonville; Rep. Blaise Ingoglia, R-Spring Hill; Rep. Erin Grall, R-Vero Beach; and Rep. Bryan Avila, R-Miami Springs. Among the Senate races that are expected to be competitive, Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book, D-Plantation, and former Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief both qualified to run in the Aug. 23 Democratic primary in Broward County’s District 35. In the state House, meanwhile, redrawn district lines set up a primary clash between Rep. Elizabeth Fetterhoff, R-DeLand, and Rep. Webster Barnaby, R-Deltona. Both qualified Monday in Volusia County’s House District 29. Among other races, Rep. Ralph Massullo, R-Lecanto, will have to fend off GOP challengers Tod Cloud and Paul John Reinhardt, who qualified Monday in House District 23. Also, Republicans Susan Plasencia and Kris Stark qualified to try to defeat Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, D-Orlando, in House District 37. Plasencia’s brother is former Rep. Rene Plasencia, R-Orlando. In the congressional contests, U.S. Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Fla., will face a primary challenge from conservative political activist and media figure Laura Loomer, who qualified in a redrawn District 11 in Central Florida.
TALLAHASSEE — Hotel room rates pushed up by demand during the past year might now be hindering tourism amid increasing inflation, state tourism officials said. As the Visit Florida tourism-marketing agency celebrated record first-quarter tourism numbers while meeting last week in Orlando, staff and board members also expressed concern that increasing cost of hotel rooms is slowly affecting occupancy rates. “I think we’re starting to see, just over the last couple of weeks or so especially, inflation actually starting to catch up with us in most markets,” said Jacob Pewitt Yancey, Visit Florida director of consumer insight and analytics. “Now, overall room revenue is still up in every market statewide, because the growth in rates has been more than enough to overcome the decreased level of demand,” Pewitt Yancey said. However, he added, “I think we’re starting to enter a time period where that might not be able to continue to be true anymore.” Hotel occupancy across the nation slowed as expected following Memorial Day, according to STR, Inc., which provides data to the hotel industry. STR did not show any of the top 25 U.S. markets with occupancy increases during the May 29 to June 4 period over the same time in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. Occupancy nationally was at 63.2 percent, which was down 12.1 percent from a similar time frame in 2019. Meanwhile, the average daily rate was up 11.3 percent, to $147.35, from the 2019 period. Even with the increase, revenue per available room was down 2.2 percent. In STR’s weekly survey, Miami posted the largest average daily rate increase nationally — up 37.8 percent from 2019 to $209.55. With occupancy at 68.9 percent, Orlando was the closest of any national market — off 2.5 percent — from its pre-pandemic mark. The numbers also come as business travel remains far behind pre-pandemic totals. Outgoing Visit Florida Board Chairman Danny Gaekwad, owner of MGM Hotels, said hoteliers and other businesses must make rate adjustments.

ELECTIONS LAW ARGUMENTS SET IN SEPTEMBER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF A federal appeals court will hear arguments in September in a battle about the constitutionality of a 2021 Florida elections law. Arguments are scheduled during the week of Sept. 12 in Miami, according to a notice issued Friday by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Attorneys for the state, county elections supervisors and national Republican organizations went to the appeals court in April after Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker ruled that the law was unconstitutionally intended to discriminate against Black voters. The appeals court last month put Walker’s ruling on hold while the underlying appeal moves forward. That decision cleared the way for the controversial law to be in place for this year’s elections. Numerous civil-
rights and voting-rights organizations last year challenged parts of the law, which placed restrictions on the use of “drop boxes” for submitting vote-by-mail ballots, imposed additional regulations on voter-registration organizations and prevented groups from providing items such as food and water to voters waiting in line at polling places. In his decision finding the law unconstitutional, Walker took the rare step of putting the state under a process known as judicial “preclearance,” meaning a court would have to sign off on most changes to Florida election laws for the next decade. But in placing a stay on Walker’s ruling, a panel of the Atlanta-based appeals court said last month he failed to adequately take into account previous court decisions establishing that changes to voting laws can confuse voters in the run-up to elections. The notice issued Friday did not give a specific date for the September arguments.

The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline has topped $5 in parts of South Florida, while statewide prices hit another record Monday at $4.89, according to the AAA auto club. The average price in the West Palm Beach and Boca Raton area was nearly $5.02. Statewide average prices were up 13 cents a gallon from last week and 42 cents from last month. “This is some unprecedented pain at the pump
TADDEO BACKS CRIST GUBERNATORIAL BID NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF A week after dropping her bid to become governor, state Sen. Annette Taddeo, D-Miami, announced support for Congressman Charlie Crist’s campaign to try to unseat Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. Taddeo, who is now running for a South Florida congressional seat held by Republican Maria Elvira Salazar, was Crist’s running mate when he
The question is finding a balance with daily rates that maintain profits. “We did the profit-taking when the ADR (the average daily rate) and occupancy both were rising,” Gaekwad said. “And now the inflation and whatever is the other reasons, the gas prices or whatever you want to say it is, we need to adjust the rates or we’re going to have a lower occupancy.” Last month, when Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a record 35.98 million total visitors — mostly domestic travelers — between the start of January and end of March, his office said Florida’s average daily rate was up over 38 percent from the same period in 2021 and the occupancy rate increased by nearly 24 percent. Those gains might not be matched in the second quarter of 2022. For every 10 percent that room rates increase, demand is down 6 percent now in Florida, Pewitt Yancey said. Until the past couple of months, total room demand in the state had been above 2019 levels, and in many weeks was above 2021 levels, Pewitt Yancey said. However, demand wasn’t evenly distributed. “Up until about a month ago, what was going on is that demand everywhere other than Orlando was just crazy, particularly Sarasota,” Pewitt Yancey said. Orlando’s lag could have been attributed to business travel not being back to prepandemic levels, Pewitt Yancey said. But in the past month, the demand for rooms in Orlando is outpacing 2021 numbers, but the rest of the state has dropped. “Every market in the state, in terms of room demand, is down. But Orlando now is so up, compared to what it was, that it’s keeping the statewide numbers positive,” Pewitt Yancey said. The drop-off outside Orlando isn’t just below the 2021 tourism resurgence. Pewitt Yancey said it’s “starting to fall back down below 2019 levels in about a third of the markets in Florida.” Board member Lino Maldonado, president of BeHome 247 Technologies, said Airbnb operators who were in major demand during the pandemic are trying to find a balance between rates and occupancy to determine profitability. “We’re still north of 2019 numbers, but certainly ADR I think is going to be coming down,” Maldonado said.
that we are seeing,” AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said. “We are setting new records and not in a good way.” The national average for a gallon of regular unleaded was $5.01 on Monday. Jenkins said drivers shouldn’t expect prices to go down anytime soon. “We just don’t know what the next month holds, let alone what things are going to be like next week,” he said. “So, the fuel market is extremely unstable right now. It’s very volatile.” While the highest prices in Florida were found in the West Palm Beach and Boca Raton area, the least-expensive gas was in the Fort Walton Beach and Pensacola areas of Northwest Florida.
unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2014. “Charlie is the same person today as I have always known him to be — a true public servant with a servant’s heart, someone willing to do whatever it takes to help Floridians and deliver justice, someone who our state can trust to lead us with compassion and unity, not division and hate,” Taddeo said in a statement released by Crist’s campaign. Crist, who is leading in Democratic primary polls over Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, endorsed Taddeo’s congressional run last week.
