​ ALERIE’S HOUSE PENSACOLA V CELEBRATES ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

DISTRICT 2 EDGEWATER/DAVENPORT NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP ON MAY 13

Valerie’s House - Pensacola, a non-profit with its sole mission of helping children grieve the death of a family member, recently celebrated its one-year anniversary of providing services to the community. The special birthday celebration kicked off May 3 with a birthday party luncheon at the Pensacola Little Theatre with a packed room of supporters, Valerie’s House family members, elected officials and community leaders.

“The support over the past year to bring Valerie’s House grief support services to our community has been nothing short of remarkable,” Valerie’s House - Pensacola founder Crista Brandt said. “As someone who lost my own mother when I was 11-years-old and had nothing like Valerie’s House to help me, I know our community needs Valerie’s House.”

Valerie’s House - Pensacola started with 20 children and 10 grieving parents a year ago and has grown to help more than 100 children and adults grieving the loss of a loved one in our community. The organization provides peer grief support groups in a safe, comfortable place on an ongoing basis, using a variety of art therapy, music and other child friendly techniques to help children cope with the traumatic death of a parent or sibling.

“We are getting about three to four new calls a week from families who need help,” Brandt said. “They finally have a place where they can go to talk about their grief and not have to stuff it inside any longer.”

Valerie’s House is currently seeking a permanent location for its groups, and are working with supporters to find a cozy, homey location to call their own.

Yard debris is eligible for removal during this cleanup.

Only residents in the designated cleanup area can participate in the neighborhood cleanup. Please have all items for pickup at the curb by 7 a.m. on the day of the cleanup. Items left at the curb outside of the cleanup area will not be collected. If you live in the targeted area, you will have received a postcard in the mail with more information.

Residents can view the boundaries of targeted cleanup areas as well as scheduled cleanup dates for 2022 on the Neighborhood Cleanup Interactive Map.

“We are looking for an actual house that we can turn into our grief support center,” Brandt explained. “When we find that location there will be no limits to how many children we can help in our region.”

Valerie’s House is in the process of finalizing a formal partnership with the City of Pensacola. This partnership would allow the organization to utilize one of the larger community centers to hold grief groups. We are also exploring other partnerships which will be announced once finalized.

One in 11 children will lose a parent before the age of 18 in Florida, and currently there are close to 10,000 children in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties grieving.

ESCAMBIA COUNTY BREAKS GROUND ON “BRADSHAW-MCNAIR FIRE STATION” On Friday, May 6, Escambia County District 1 Commissioner and Chairman Jeff Bergosh introduced the proclamation naming Escambia County Fire RescueStation #2, “The Bradshaw-McNair Fire Station,” named after District Chief Dwain S. Bradshaw and long-time Station #2 Chief Steve McNair.

The proclamation was presented during the ECFR-Station #2 groundbreaking ceremony with the families and friends of Dwain S. Bradshaw and Steve McNair in attendance, along with fellow representatives of Escambia County.

On Nov. 6, 2019, Chief Bradshaw tragically was killed in the line of duty while working an active call. Chief Bradshaw is remembered for his years in public service. He served for Escambia County Fire Rescue as a District Chief and Assistant District Chief. Chief Bradshaw also served as a police officer, a veteran of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Army Reserves and the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

Retired District Chief Steve McNair served the citizens of the Beulah community for over 50 years as a volunteer firefighter, mentor, instructor and leader.

After a devastating fire destroyed the original Station #2 in 1977, Chief McNair personally helped rebuild the current fire station being used today. He retired from service in October of 2019.

“Today was a tremendous day for our county, the Beulah Community and for ECFR as we broke ground on our newest modern fire facility on Nine Mile Road,” said Commissioner Bergosh. “It was also my humble privilege to honor two great families that sacrificed so much

for our community and ECFR, and who’s names will forever be honored as the namesakes for this new facility once it is completed. The Bradshaw-McNair Fire station will serve to enshrine the legacy of both Chief Dwain S. Bradshaw, who gave his life for our citizens as he died in the line of duty, and Chief Steve McNair, who gave more than 50 years of service to our community in the fire service. Today was a great day in Escambia County, a day we can all take pride in as we honor and recognize these exceptional individuals and their families.”

The Board of County Commissioners wish to appropriately recognize and memorialize the profound contributions, service, and sacrifices of Chief Bradshaw and Chief McNair with a significant and meaningful honor so that the citizens of Escambia County and the Beulah community will never forget the legacy and contributions of these men and their families.

About ECFR-Station #2

Escambia County Fire Rescue-Station #2, built in 1977, serves the Beulah community and operates as a combination of full-time and volunteer firefighters. The “Bradshaw-McNair Fire Station” will be 14,503 square feet and will have four vehicle bays, including one for EMS. The station will also come equipped with a small community meeting/training room.

Since 2016, more than 4,183 tons (8,366,000 pounds) of waste have been disposed of through the Community Redevelopment Agency’s Safe Neighborhood Program.

During neighborhood cleanups, crew members and volunteers visit different neighborhoods in the county to remove a variety of debris and waste free of charge.

LETTER CARRIERS’ 30TH ANNUAL STAMP OUT HUNGER FOOD DRIVE THIS WEEKEND Residents in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties can help feed hungry neighbors in need by donating to the Stamp Out Hunger food drive this Saturday, May 14.

This is the 30th year for the National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive – the largest, national, single-day effort to put food on the table for millions of Americans. Food collected in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties benefits local food pantries, helping to feed those who are struggling with food insecurity in our community.

The NALC food drive was canceled the past two years due to the pandemic.

Those canceled drives plus an increase in the need for food assistance mean a successful event this year is a necessity.

“Stamp Out Hunger is one of the most important annual food drives for many of the area’s food pantries, including Manna,” said Dede Flounlacker, Executive Director of Manna Food Pantries.

“Every food donation collected by letter carriers helps meet the needs of hungry neighbors in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.”

Residents of the two-county area will receive a yellow Stamp Out Hunger bag to fill with donation items. They are

encouraged to fill the bag with healthy, non-perishable food items, such as canned chicken, canned tuna, canned fruit in 100% juice, dry breakfast items (oatmeal, whole-grain cereal), canned vegetables, peanut butter, and/or dry beans. Residents should place the bag next to their mailbox prior to regular mail delivery on this Saturday, May 14.

Residents should not donate items in glass containers or items that have been opened or homemade.

Escambia and Santa Rosa letter carriers will collect food donations that will benefit individuals and families served

by Manna Food Pantries, Feeding the Gulf Coast, ACTS Ministries, We Care Ministries, and Warrington Emergency Aid Center.

Several partners are assisting the NALC in the food drive: the United States Postal Service, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association (NRLCA), the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), Valpak, United Way, the AFL-CIO, CVS, Kellogg’s and Vericast.

PENSACOLA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ADDS NEW ECONOMY LOT WITH OVER 330 SPACES With passenger numbers continuing to break records at Pensacola International Airport, PNS has added a new economy lot with more than 330 spaces to make parking more accessible than ever for travelers.

Economy Lot 3 is now open at Pensacola International Airport, with 339 parking spaces including 11 electric vehicle charging spaces and two handicap-accessible electric vehicle charging spaces.

“We’re excited about this much-needed addition at Pensacola International Airport, especially as we enter peak travel season this summer,” Airport Director Matt Coughlin said. “Our goal is always to make traveling through our airport as easy as possible for residents and visitors, and this new economy lot will help make the traveling process smoother than ever.”
