OPEN BOOKS & THE PRISON BOOK PROJECT

A
perfect storm over the last decadeand-a-half, not limited to the Great Recession, COVID-19 and multiple natural disasters, saw Pensacola’s used bookstores tumble like dominoes—all except Open Books. Though not unaffected, the all-volunteer nonprofit is flourishing and hopes to return to pre-pandemic normalcy, starting with their annual—now semiannual—$1 Book Sale.
“We decided to have two $1 sales per year. Right now, we’ve got one planned for Memorial Day weekend,” Johnny Ardis, the general manager of Open Books, said. “Last year, we had one on Thanksgiving weekend, so we’re probably going to continue that routine.” This decision complements Open Book’s plans to add more events, particularly ones which were halted by the pandemic, such as book signings, poetry readings and documentary viewings, to their calendar. Shoppers can expect to find a wide selection of high quality, good-condition used books, which Open Books prides itself on. They are particularly proud of their poetry selection, boasting that it is “arguably the best” in Pensacola. Ardis credits the oversight of Scott Satterwhite, a founder, longtime volunteer and instructor at University of West Florida. “You know, Scott’s basically the curator of most of these books. And him being an English professor, he knows books! He’s a poet himself, so he curates the poetry section,” Ardis said. “We’ve basically got the best of the best.”
These sales are the perfect opportunity for voracious readers to add a generous heap of books to their “to-read” piles and donate a cache of read books to stock someone else’s, confident that their support will benefit their local community. In addition, all of Open Books’ profits fund the Prison Book Project, which sends free books to inquiring prisoners throughout the state of Florida. According to a 2021 report by the Florida Department of Corrections, as of June 30, 2021, there were 80,495 inmates in Florida’s prison system. This number fluctuates; yet prison recidivism rates in Florida consistently range between 24 to 25 percent. The Prison Book Project aims to lower the recidivism rate by providing prisoners with the opportunity to learn practical skills and improve their mental wellbeing during their sentence, allowing for a better chance at successful reintegration upon release. Nonprofits normally back a cause, but Open Books and the Prison Book Project’s case
is unique. Open Books is sort of a façade that the Prison Book Project has worn since October 2007—but the project’s history is longer, seeded in political activism and Pensacola’s once-thriving punk subculture. In 1999, a group of local activists formed the Collective of Resource Empowerment (CORE) House to combat a variety of sociopolitical issues, including the prison industrial complex, and serve as a small library for political and alternative publications. CORE’s quick dissolution saw their politics and “small but impressive” transform into the Prison Book Project in 2000. A noble aim—however, the Department of Corrections states that books sent to a prison must be sent from a legitimate bookstore; thus, for there to be a Prison Book Project, there must always be a bookstore. Subterranean Books was then formed to house the project; when Subterranean Books closed, Open Books took its place. More than a decade later, Open Books—now located at 1040 N. Guillemard Street, in an intimate, quasi-labyrinthine building, surrounded by the colorful graffiti and galleries of First City Art Center, in what might be their perfect match—functions like a “well-oiled machine.” In 2021, Open Books
received 4,164 letters from prisoners in facilities throughout Florida, sent 3,871 book packages and logged 4,485 total volunteer hours. “We probably mail out around 400 packages a month to prisoners. You know what? More like 500 a month we mail out to the prisoners,” Ardis said. “We’ve been consistent these last several years.” These impressive numbers wouldn’t be possible without the public’s generous donations as well as a dedicated cache of volunteers’ support. In addition to running the store, volunteers read and respond to 85-100 prisoners’ letters, and pack and ship as many book packages, per week. “We have anywhere from two to three volunteers that work in here during the day,” said Ardis. “Then on book-packing nights, we have anywhere from five to eight. We have book packings three times a week,” Ardis explained. Open Books is a nonprofit with a mission and Ardis credits the volunteers and public support for their success in 2022. BAPTIST HEALTH CARE FINALIZES PLANS FOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH UNIT
DISTRICT 2 NAVY POINT/BEACH HAVEN NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP ON MAY 25
In early May, Baptist Health Care announced that it has finalized plans for its behavioral health unit on the new Baptist Hospital campus being built at the intersection of Brent Lane and I-110. The BHU will provide inpatient behavioral health care for adults and children. It will have 72 beds with 36 allocated for adult patients, 10 for geriatric patients, 14 for adolescents and 12 for children. “We provide care to thousands of individuals requiring inpatient behavioral health care each year. More than 1,100 of those patients are children ages 10 to 17 and as young as age 5,” said Mark Faulkner, president and CEO, Baptist Health Care. “We are honored to bring this new facility and environment to our community that will offer a haven in which patients can focus on their recovery.” In addition to patient rooms, the floor plan includes day rooms for common gatherings, meeting spaces for group and one-on-one gatherings, and a sensory room which combines a variety of stimuli including special lighting, colors and sound that help people develop, engage and regulate their senses. Nurses stations are positioned to support patient monitoring and access. The location’s design provides efficiency, comfort and safety for patients and staff. Outdoor spaces are an important part of the healing environment. A main garden courtyard is situated in the center of the facility, and small gardens and a play area are dotted around the building’s perimeter to provide additional play space for children and a calm respite area for adults. The design elements of the BHU coordinate with those of the main hospital building and the Bear Family Foundation Health Center. Colors reflecting the coastal environment have been selected

This is a chance for residents to dispose of items such as old furniture, appliances and household waste free of charge. Yard debris is eligible for removal during this cleanup. Only residents in the designated cleanup area can participate in the neighborhood cleanup. Please have all items for pickup at the curb by 7 a.m. on the day of the cleanup. Items left at the curb outside of the cleanup area will not be collected. If you live in the targeted area, you will have received a postcard in the mail with more information. Residents can view the boundaries of targeted cleanup areas as well as scheduled cleanup dates for 2022 on the Neighborhood Cleanup Interactive Map.

The surroundings complement the high level of clinical expertise and compassionate care of Baptist Hospital’s behavioral health unit team, a multi-disciplinary group of psychiatrists, nurses, therapists and counselors. “At our new location, we are adding inpatient geriatric services while offering more private rooms, including those for the child and adolescent unit,” said Eric Rutledge, executive director of behavioral health services. “Our goal is to incorporate the latest technologies and techniques in a setting where our patients feel safe and can fully engage in their treatment plan.” The announcement of these finalized plans coincides with the start of National Mental Health Awareness Month. A recent study shows that residents of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties consider mental health issues to be the second most important health concern affecting the local community. The research was conducted by Achieve Healthy EscaRosa, a health collaborative of local health care providers, health departments, nonprofit organizations and the University of West Florida that is focused on improving the overall health of residents in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. The BHU represents Baptist Health Care’s commitment to and investment in providing needed behavioral health services. The BHU is scheduled to open with the rest of the campus in Fall 2023. MAYOR’S NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP COLLECTS 30 TONS OF BULK WASTE The May Mayor’s Neighborhood Cleanup collected over 30 tons (61,440 pounds) of bulk waste, along with 27 tires and 1,081 gallons of paint. The cleanup took place on Saturday, May 21, with 14 loads picked up from a portion of the East Hill neighborhood. The Mayor’s Neighborhood Cleanup allows residents in the cleanup areas to leave eligible items at the curb on cleanup day to be picked up by City of Pensacola Sanitation Services. The cleanup includes bulk items such as household appliances, furniture and
mattresses, bicycles and toys, tires and old paint. Through the Mayor’s Neighborhood Cleanup program, all city neighborhoods have a cleanup once a year during the months of January through October. In addition to Sanitation Services collecting items left at the curb, Code Enforcement conducts a sweep of the cleanup area and addresses any code violations.
