McGuire’s Irish Pub
600 E. Gregory St.
McGuire’s Irish Pub is one of Pensacola’s oldest restaurants, and it’s also known as the oldest craft brewery in Florida. McGuire’s first opened in 1977 as a small neighborhood pub in the Town & Country Plaza shopping center in Pensacola. In 1982, it moved to its current location, which served as Pensacola’s original 1927 old firehouse.
Known for its on-site brewery and funny patron traditions, like kissing a stuffed moose head and stapling autographed dollar bill “tips” to the ceiling, McGuire’s Irish Pub has become a staple in the Pensacola community. The 20,000-squarefoot restaurant boasts around 615 seats spread amongst various themed rooms—each inspired by a turn-of-the-century, New York Irishstyle saloon.
McGuire’s offers a huge list of beers (locally crafted and others), an extensive food menu with generous portions and plenty of traditional live music—bagpipes included.
The menu features a variety of traditional Irish pub foods like Irish boxties, shepherd’s pie, authentic Irish lamb stew, Irish cockles and mussels, corned beef and cabbage, lamb shank colcannon, Irish steak and mushroom pie.
McGuire’s also boasts an onsite brewery, which first opened in 1988 and brews fine ales, porters, stouts and more. All beers are brewed at McGuire’s in the traditional oak and copper brewery using the finest malted barley, imported hops and McGuire’s signature house yeast. They offer five beers regularly: light ale, Irish stout, red ale, IPA and porter. Other seasonal beers are offered on rotation, including their popular raspberry wheat ale, Belgian ale, Oktoberfest, Hefeweizen and more. The signature drink at McGuire’s is the Irish Wake, a powerful cocktail that mixes rum, blue curaçao, orange juice and peach schnapps. For those who don’t drink, McGuire’s also brews its own root beer.
You can enjoy live music just about every night of the week
from 9 pm until close, which typically includes a mix of traditional Irish pub music and other popular modern favorites.
McGuire’s Irish Pub is open
Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 2 am and on Sunday from 10 am to 2 am. For details on upcoming events, daily specials and more, visit mcguiresirishpub.com/pensacola and follow @mcguiresirishpub on Facebook and @mcguirespensacola on Instagram.

O’Riley’s Uptown Tavern, Pensacola’s original O’Riley’s Pub, is a locally owned and operated neighborhood Irish pub that has served the Pensacola area for over 20 years. The original O’Riley’s Irish Pub was transformed into what we now know as O’Riley’s Uptown Tavern in 2003 when owners
and Derek Sonnen decided to venture into the hospitality industry.
Located off the beaten path on Creighton Road, O’Riley’s Uptown provides a fun getaway at the north end of Pensacola for those not looking to drive downtown.
O’Riley’s Uptown is known for its large outdoor patio, backyard space and pool room. Patrons can also enjoy dart boards, arcade machines and more than a dozen HD TVs with watch party seating.

Paddy O’Leary’s Irish Pub
49 Via De Luna Dr. Owned and operated by locals Gary Humphrey and Seamas Hunt, Paddy O’Leary’s Irish Pub (Paddy’s) is somewhat of a hidden gem on Pensacola Beach. The pub officially opened its doors in March of 2000, just a few days before St. Patrick’s Day, and has developed a loyal following that’s turned it into one of the most popular hangouts on the beach.
Gary Humphrey and his wife, Maureen, relocated to the Pensacola area from Pittsburgh back in 1983 and have called it home ever since. Co-owner Seamas Hunt moved to Pensacola from County Wicklow, Ireland in 1996 after graduating from college. He and his wife Sharon and their four kids reside in Gulf Breeze. Gary and Seamas decided to open Paddy’s back in 1998 when Gary and his wife accompanied Seamas and his family on a trip to Ireland to attend his twin brother’s wedding. During the trip, Seamas took Gary on a tour of his favorite Irish pubs and Gary was so impressed, the two made it their mission to introduce the people of Pensacola to a “real Irish pub.”
Like O’Riley’s Uptown Tavern, you won’t find any Irish grub at Paddy’s, but with more than 100 beers available, you’re sure to find something you can enjoy. Paddy’s
signature drink is the Irish car bomb, which is a cocktail that’s made by dropping a shot of Irish cream and Irish whiskey into a glass of Irish stout — typically Guinness. When it comes to entertainment, Paddy’s always has something going on. Live music is a huge draw for the pub and you’ll find local big names like The Modern Eldorados, plus traditional Irish tunes by The Irish Claddagh. Paddy’s also hosts regular karaoke and open mic nights. The pub slogan is “where the fun begins and never ends.” You’ll find, NFL Sunday Ticket and College Football games on all TVs, live music, bands, Texas Hold’em, karaoke, nightly drink specials, Irish car bombs galore and, of course, plenty of beer. Paddy O’Leary’s is open daily from 11 am to 2:30 am. For details on upcoming events, drink specials and more, visit paddyolearysirishpub.com.

MARINE AWARDED NAVY AND MARINE CORPS MEDAL FOR HEROISM
U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Joshua C. Watson was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal during a ceremony hosted by Marine Aviation Training Support Group 21 at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, on Feb. 28, 2025, in recognition of his heroic actions.
Capt. Joshua Watson, received the Department of the Navy’s highest non-combat award for his courage, prompt actions, and total dedication to duty during a fatal MV-22 Osprey crash while he served as the Executive Officer for Company L, 1st Marines, Ground Combat Element, Marine Rotational ForceDarwin 23.3, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force on Aug. 27, 2023.
While serving as the Ground Force Commander for a 38-Marine element inserting to Pickertaramoor Airfield on Melville Island, 45 miles north of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, then-1st Lt. Watson and 18 of his Marines, one Sailor, and four aircrew crashed into a wooded area 2 kilometers short of the landing zone. During the descent, Watson received the brace hand and arm signal and heard the command verbally over the inter-communication system. He echoed and issued the command to brace, then physically forced his radio operator, into the brace position. The radio operator was positioned in a cabin seat close to the rear of the aircraft. When the aircraft impacted the ground, it sustained damage, causing a jet fuel leak that ignited the surrounding terrain shortly afterward, prompting immediate response efforts.
“Due to the intense fire, smoke, and debris filling the cabin, I reverted to thinking of alternate escape routes,” said Watson. “The only light piercing through the smoke came from the rear of the aircraft and this soon became the primary exit.”
Watson’s first action was to unstrap and physically awaken his radio operator, who had fallen unconscious. Despite the aircraft being on fire, Watson remained inside until his radio operator regained consciousness and safely exited the aircraft with Watson’s support. After Watson freed his radio operator from his restraints and assisted him out of the aircraft, he directed the remaining Marines onboard to evacuate, facilitating their safe departure as the situation escalated.
“After noticing that nobody was really moving, I directed the Marines to ‘leave everything and get out the back of the aircraft,’” said Watson. “As I unstrapped and untangled myself, I handed off my radio operator to another Marine towards the rear exit, checking under seats as I went to ensure no one remained trapped.”
After Watson exited the aircraft and conducted a final visual sweep, he accounted for all the Marines onboard while observing that the aircraft was mostly engulfed in flames. He determined that three Marines were missing, one Marine was critically injured, one was an urgent casualty, and numerous priority casualties had sustained injuries. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Watson took charge of the immediate
search effort for the three missing personnel. He directed non-injured personnel to assist in the search to ensure that all recoverable personnel were located from the aircraft.
“Once I realized we hadn’t gotten accountability of those three Marines, my first thought was to attempt to locate them,” said Watson.
Within minutes after impact, Watson established radio communication with a mixed section of AH-1Z and UH-Y1 helicopters circling overhead, which had been escorting the assault force. He provided information on accountability, initial triage assessments, and a casualty nine-line brief. His communication facilitated timely, lifesaving care for the casualties and allowed the helicopters to relay information to emergency medical services mobilizing to the crash site.
“Fortunately, we had those Marine helicopters above, because we wouldn’t have been able to start getting casualty resources to our position if that wasn’t the case,” said Watson. “They were our lifeline.”
With no viable helicopter landing zones near the crash site and no roads or trails leading to the airfield, the Marines needed to execute a ground recovery through two kilometers of unimproved, wooded terrain to Pickertaramoor Airfield. Despite sustaining a broken ankle in the crash, Watson remained proactive and forward-thinking, coordinating with all agencies involved in the recovery effort. He guided multiple rescue helicopters into position and facilitated the insertion of several medical teams. As a liaison with the medical teams, Watson ensured his Marines received appropriate care while maintaining accountability, despite the complexity of coordinating multiple elements. He constantly monitored his Marines, providing real-time updates on casualty statuses and facilitating the proper handoff of one urgent surgical and four priority casualties. Watson was the last Marine to recover and transport to Royal Australian Air Force Base Darwin, where he and his Marines received treatment for their injuries.
“Almost everyone was injured in the crash, but we didn’t realize the severity due to the shock, we kept checking on each other because we didn’t know the true conditions of everyone,” said Watson. “Self-aid was critical, my Marines being solid in Tactical Combat Casualty Care was essential to minimize the loss of life.”
Watson's levelheaded leadership and professionalism in the face of a chaotic and dynamic situation, despite his injuries, played a crucial role in saving the lives of his Marines. Positioned in a cabin seat closest to the fire that would eventually envelop and burn the entire aircraft, he ensured that his radio operator, safely exited. For his heroic actions, the Navy and Marine Corps awarded Watson the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, a prestigious honor recognizing individuals who risk their lives and distinguish themselves in a non-combat environment.

Accreditation standards provide norms against which agency performance can be measured and monitored over time. They also serve as a yardstick to measure the effectiveness of the agency’s programs and services. The services provided are defined, and uniformity of service is assured. Accreditation is a coveted award that symbolizes professionalism, excellence, and competence.
Earlier this week Mayor D.C. Reeves remarked, “The reaccreditation of the Pensacola Police Department is a testament to the dedication, professionalism, and integrity of our officers. This achievement reflects their unwavering commitment to

PENSACOLA BUSINESSMAN QUINT STUDER WINS 2025 BALDRIGE FOUNDATION LEADERSHIP AWARD
Quint Studer, co-founder of Pensacola’s Healthcare Plus Solutions Group® (HPSG), has been named one of the 2025 recipients of the Baldrige Foundation Leadership Excellence Awards. The award, given by the Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, Inc., recognizes leaders who embody Baldrige leadership and management values.
Studer is one of four healthcare leaders who received the honor.
Studer has a history of Baldrige recognition. Fifteen years ago, Studer Group, his company at the time, was selected as one of seven U.S. recipients of the 2010 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He says he was inspired to apply for the award when organizations his firm worked with followed the Baldrige framework.
“The Baldrige framework made them better,” says Studer. “And some of them ended up receiving the Baldrige Award. We decided to go through the process too. We applied for the Baldrige Award several times and finally won. It was exciting, but more important, it made us better.”
After leaving Studer Group, he founded Healthcare Plus Solutions Group along with business partner Dan Collard.
“At HPSG, we continue to live by the principles Baldrige stands for,” Studer adds. “We never stop trying to get stronger and better. We feel we owe it to our partners.”
In addition to his healthcare leadership work, Studer applies Baldrige principles to his efforts to serve communities across the U.S. that are on the path to vibrancy. He is the founder of Studer Community Institute (SCI), which advances early brain development and leadership training. He also
founded the Center for Civic Engagement, which focuses on bringing community best practices to the Pensacola, Florida area. His efforts have helped revitalize Pensacola, driving significant growth and earning national recognition.
Studer and his wife, Rishy, are active philanthropists and have donated to a variety of organizations in healthcare, community development, education, and more. Recipients include Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Ascension Sacred Heart, Baptist Healthcare Behavioral Medicine Center, Bear Levin Studer Family YMCA, the University of West Florida, the Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition, Bruce Beach Park, and many other community groups.
The Foundation’s Leadership Awards will be presented during the Foundation Awards Ceremony held as part of the annual Quest for Excellence® conference in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 1, 2025. About the Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, Inc. The Baldrige Foundation was created as the private partner to the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program in 1988. Its mission is to ensure the long-term financial viability of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program and to support organizational performance excellence throughout the U.S. and the world. The Baldrige Program, located at NIST within the U.S. Department of Commerce, is a separate entity and is solely responsible for managing and administering the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. THE CITY OF PENSACOLA WELCOMES GL52 SERIES TO PENSACOLA BAY
The City of Pensacola welcomed GL52 sailboats to Pensacola Bay this week to test out local weather and water conditions ahead of the upcoming inaugural GL52 Southern Series in Downtown Pensacola March 20.
Thanks in large part to American Magic making Pensacola its new home, the city is now part of the growing world of professional sailing. Teams Wizard and Vesper, along with GL52 Fleet Manager Linda Lindquist, met with local media to discuss Pensacola as a new premier sailing destination and to give a sneak peek of the GL52s in action.
“One of our core missions is to develop American sailing talent — and that’s a
mission of American Magic as well,” Linda Lindquist said. “It starts with creating awareness, getting people around these boats, and seeing what they can do sometimes.”
The GL52 Series is a competition of high-performance sailboats comprising amateur and professional sailors, including those who have competed in the America’s Cup and Olympics. The two-part racing event will consist of six GL52s, each with more than a dozen crew members, with part one beginning March 20 and part two April 10.
For more information about the GL52 Series, please visit gl52series.com.
Gulf Coast Kids House announces their reaccreditation and membership within the National Children’s Alliance (NCA) as well as additional accreditation and achievement under the Child Endangerment and Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) and Physical Abuse Standards. As a Children's Advocacy Center (CAC), Gulf Coast Kids House meets not only the National Standards of Accreditation set by NCA, but also the optional standard for services to victims of child physical abuse. While Accredited CACs across the country
provide such services, the silver ribbon on our NCA Accreditation Badge demonstrates meeting a standard of exceptional care for children and families.
This is Gulf Coast Kids House’s fourth accreditation/reaccreditation. “It is always our goal to provide quality care to the families that we serve, and this accreditation gives us a measurable way to ensure just that.” says Executive Director Stacey Kostevicki. “We are grateful for this opportunity to reflect on and improve our services!”
STATE PENSION OFFICIALS STEP UP CORPORATE SCRUTINY
JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
Florida will expand a look at companies whose shareholders include the state pension fund, after targeting corporate initiatives that Gov. Ron DeSantis and his allies deem part of “woke” ideology.
DeSantis and members of the state Cabinet on Wednesday backed a resolution that, in part, expanded a pool of law firms retained by the state in the effort to scrutinize corporate policies. Currently, five firms are retained.
Asked after a Cabinet meeting if the changes are intended to send a warning to publicly traded companies, Chris Spencer, executive director of the State Board of Administration, which oversees Florida’s investments, said there isn’t a short list of targeted companies.
“I would say we always are very proactive and transparent about our intent to be a very active shareholder. And we've done that in the past,” Spencer said. “I think you're going to see a lot more of that again from us.”
Corporate governance principles targeted could range from misstatements of facts that result in lost value to proxy-voting standards.
DeSantis and Cabinet members are trustees of the State Board of Administration. The resolution allows the State Board of Administration to initiate lawsuits by giving the trustees a five-day notice rather than waiting for approval from the trustees.
The resolution also establishes a litigation reserve fund of about $20 million.
“You'll see us be more aggressive on litigation around areas where we think that we can add material value, long-term material value to shareholders,” Spencer said.
“And the essence of this whole initiative is to be very clear that this is going to be a direction that we're going down,” Spencer continued. “And ultimately the academic research, empirical data supports that when compa -
nies adopt very robust corporate governance policies, that ultimately derives a much higher shareholder value for those investors.”
Previously the state has targeted corporate initiatives involving “environmental, social and governance” and “diversity, equity and inclusion” standards. DeSantis said Wednesday that ESG “is basically dead now around the country.”
The resolution came after the trustees ratified a class-action lawsuit filed last month by Attorney General James Uthmeier that alleges Target Corp. did not properly disclose to investors the risks of a 2023 LGBTQ Pride campaign that drew a consumer backlash and caused a drop in the retailer’s stock price.
“If companies are going to go out and focus on radical, ideological politics and not getting revenues, then we need to hold them accountable,” Uthmeier said.
DeSantis pointed to the state trying to block companies from catering to “any fringe left wing group or activist.”
“People are free to do that on their own time. But if you have a fiduciary obligation to represent the shareholder interest, those tangents are not fulfilling that fiduciary obligation,” DeSantis said. “So, we sitting on the board, we have every right to ensure and take steps to make sure that these companies are fulfilling those obligations, because ultimately, it's the retired police officers, firefighters, teachers, who depend on this pension fund.”
The Uthmeier-led lawsuit is one of at least three similar cases against Target in Florida.
Responding to one of the other cases, Target in January 2024 said it “repeatedly warned investors of the risk” of consumer boycotts because of its initiatives, including the 2023 Pride campaign and argued that “disagreeing with Target’s business judgment does not give rise to an actionable claim under the securities laws.”
LEGISLATIVE LEADERS EYE SPENDING, INSURANCE
JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
With House Speaker Daniel Perez pointing to an “age of disruption,” Florida Republican legislative leaders opened the 2025 session on Tuesday by voicing support for digging into government spending.
“Members, do not be afraid to shake the tree of government and pull out the weeds of waste, fraud or abuse,” Perez, R-Miami, told House members.
“Regardless of background, age, or political party, Floridians expect our government to operate efficiently and tax dollars to be spent wisely, with accountability and results,” Senate President Ben Albritton, R-Wauchula, told the Senate. Perez also took aim at the propertyinsurance industry after a Tampa Bay Times/ Miami Herald story about a long-buried report on industry practices. The story said insurers declared they were losing money after hurricanes Irma and Michael while companies distributed money to shareholders and affiliated companies.
Perez said he has asked the House Insurance & Banking Subcommittee to conduct hearings that could include issuing subpoenas and taking testimony under oath.
“A couple of years ago, the insurance industry came to the Legislature and said without sweeping reforms, companies could not compete in Florida,” Perez said. “We have since learned of reports --- in existence at that time but not disclosed to the Legislature --- that may suggest some insurance companies were using accounting tricks to hide substantial profits while telling us they were in a crisis.”
The focus by the Republican-controlled Legislature on digging into spending comes as President Donald Trump has made high-profile moves to cut the size of the federal government.
But Democrats on Tuesday said Republicans have controlled the Legislature for nearly three decades and are now embracing efficiency because they anticipate Florida will receive fewer federal dollars in the coming years.
“They’re trying to get ahead of the harsh cuts that will be made because the federal government is taking a sledgehammer to federal spending,” House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell, D-Tampa, said. “That will leave an economy like ours in tatters if we can’t get the funding that we typically get, given that about one-third of our budget is federal money.”
Last week, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a “state DOGE task force” to review about 900 state positions, university spending, local government spending and the need for about 70 state boards and commissions. That comes after the Trump administration has used a “Depart-
NORTH FLORIDA COLLEGE PRESIDENT STEPPING DOWN
JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
Continuing changes in leadership in the state’s higher-education system, longtime North Florida College President John Grosskopf will leave his post in December.
An announcement posted Tuesday on the college’s website cited health concerns. The college’s Board of Trustees has scheduled a special meeting Wednesday to discuss the upcoming vacancy.
Grosskopf has served as president of the Madison-based college for 17 years and will remain at the school as a faculty member, according to the announcement.
“It has been beyond an honor to serve as president for North Florida College,” Grosskopf said in a prepared statement. “I am grateful for the support of our board, and I am so proud of the success and accomplishments of our students and this institution. NFC is truly a family in every sense of the word.”
North Florida College serves a rural region, with sites in Suwannee and Taylor counties along with Madison County. Tuesday’s announcement did not detail the health concerns that led to Grosskopf stepping down.
“President Grosskopf’s leadership has truly been a display of strength and passion,” college Board of Trustees Chairman Ricky Lyons said in a prepared statement. “Regardless of hardship – from economy to hurricanes — Dr. Grosskopf represented our college with great commitment.”
The announcement is the latest step in a series of changes in the presidencies of state universities and colleges in recent years.
In the state college system, Torey Alston, a former Broward County School Board member and former Broward County commissioner, was chosen in January to become president of Broward College; former state Rep. Mel Ponder, R-Destin, was chosen last year to become president of Northwest Florida State College; former Rep. Tommy Gregory, R-Lakewood Ranch, was chosen last year to become president of State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota; and former Rep. Fred Hawkins, R-St. Cloud, was chosen in 2023 to become president of South Florida State College.
Meanwhile, in the university system, former state House Majority Leader Adam Hasner, R-Boca Raton, was chosen last month to serve as president of Florida Atlantic University, and former Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez was chosen last month to serve as interim president of Florida International University. Also, University of South Florida President Rhea Law announced last month she will step down.
In addition, Florida Polytechnic University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida State University, the University of North Florida and New College of Florida have presidents who were appointed since 2021. Meanwhile, the University of Florida and Florida A&M University are operating with interim presidents.
SENATORS OK REPEALING LATER SCHOOL START TIMES
JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
With school districts across the state expressing support, Florida senators Monday started moving forward with a bill that would repeal requirements aimed at later daily start times in many high schools.
ment of Government Efficiency,” or DOGE, to cut federal spending and jobs.
Part of DeSantis’ proposal involves lawmakers passing a measure that would give task force members the power to audit localgovernment budgets.
“In my view, one of the reasons DOGE has become so popular at the federal level is that Americans have a problem with the idea that unelected federal bureaucrats have so much unchecked authority,” Albritton said. “Now, I respect and appreciate those who dedicate their careers to public service. It’s a very high calling. However, the fact is, we are a state and nation of laws that should be created by elected officials accountable to the people who elected them, not appointed professional staff.”
Albritton also used his opening-day comments to further back legislation that would do such things as help rural communities, protect the citrus industry, increase Everglades restoration efforts and improve child welfare services. He also supported elevating state information technology to the state Cabinet level.
“Under no circumstances, and I repeat, under no circumstances, do I want to create an expensive, bloated bureaucracy of former C-Suite executives from Silicon Valley,” Albritton said. “But, without fail, we must have top talent to win this battle against those who seek to use technology to harm us.”
Perez said he was offering no “personal priorities” for the session, while saying “we are living in an age of disruption,” yet “we can’t be afraid of change.”
Albritton, meanwhile, noted that housing costs have “skyrocketed” since the COVID-19 pandemic, pushing “property insurance and property taxes higher and higher.”
“As a conservative, we’ve got to be honest about the extent to which government, specifically state government, can or should address these issues in a meaningful way,” Albritton said.
Speaking to reporters, Senate Minority Leader Jason Pizzo, D-Sunny Isles Beach, expressed support for parts of Albritton’s legislative agenda that seek “to feed families, to foster economic growth, to protect our children, our homes.”
“Speaker Perez expressed much of the same,” Pizzo added. “And so I pledge my absolute commitment that if we can focus on this agenda, there need not be an ideology or even an aisle that divides us.”
Aside from the policy issues of the first day, the Senate and House also took time to honor Sen. Geraldine Thompson, an Orange County Democrat who died last month after complications from a recent surgery. A black drape covered the front of her desk in the Senate.
Lawmakers in 2023 approved the requirements, citing a need for older students to get more sleep. The requirements are slated to take effect in 2026, but as the deadline has neared, districts have said they are struggling to comply.
Bill sponsor Jennifer Bradley, R-Fleming Island, said the 2023 law was “very wellintentioned and it sought to ensure that our high-school students were well-rested.” Under the law, high schools could not start earlier than 8:30 a.m. and middle schools could not start earlier than 8 a.m.
“To date, school districts across the state have begun their analysis of the impact of these required start times for the 2026 school year, and the feedback is overwhelming: A state mandate on school start times would present incredible challenges, financially and otherwise,” Bradley said before the Senate Education Pre-K-12 Committee voted 5-1 to approve the bill (SB 296).
Bradley, who represents a sprawling, largely rural area of North Florida, said many school districts would need to buy buses and hire hard-to-find bus drivers. Also, she said the later start times could affect such things as student participation in after-school activities and parents’ work schedules and child care.
Statewide organizations representing superintendents and school boards, along with numerous school districts, expressed support Monday for Bradley’s bill.
Sen. Lori Berman, D-Boca Raton, said she voted for the 2023 law and likes the idea of later start times for older children, but the Palm Beach County school district told her it would not be feasible to meet the requirements.
“They said it was just impossible for them to be able to meet this mandate,” Berman said.
Sen. Don Gaetz, a Niceville Republican who is a former Okaloosa County superintendent of schools, cast the only dissenting vote Monday.
While the 2023 law also addressed middle schools, it was primarily about high schools. Citing information from the Legislature’s Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability, a Senate analysis said the average start time for Florida high schools is 7:45 a.m. It said 46 percent of high schools start before 7:30 a.m., and 19 percent start between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. It said the average start time for middle schools is 9:03 a.m., with 8 percent starting before 8 a.m.
While Bradley’s bill would repeal the requirements, it says school districts would have to “consider the benefits of a later school start time when adopting middle school and high school start times.”
Rep. Anne Gerwig, R-Wellington, has filed a similar bill (HB 261) in the House. The annual legislative session will start Tuesday.
