The owners of one of Pensacola’s most beloved food trucks have opened their first brick-andmortar in downtown Pensacola— Nolita’s Parlor & Eatery.
Established by MI SU Street Food owners Alden and Hylene Garcia, Nolita’s serves as an extension to the Garcia’s wildly popular MI SU Street Food food truck.
Located at 9 E. Gregory St. in downtown Pensacola, Nolita’s offers the full MI SU Street Food menu in a new sit-down environment. The new brick and mortar also serves as the new permanent home to the MI SU Street Food food truck.
Although the official grand opening of Nolita’s is set for April 1, which will include the debut of its soft serve ice cream bar, the eatery portion is now open for business. In the meantime, customers can enjoy all of their favorites from the MI SU Street Food menu, as well as a completely different and unique fried chicken menu.
“The eatery part of Nolita’s is open now and we are serving MI SU and our fried chicken pop-up, Frito’s Chicken Shop, Tuesday through Saturday,” the Garcias explained.
Other menu offerings include a variety of fun craft sodas, tasty baked goods and a soft serve ice cream bar with loads of tasty toppings, which is set to make its debut this coming April.
“Our goal with Nolita’s is to create a space that can be a one
stop shop for savory and sweet,”
Garcia said. “The MI SU food truck is parked right outside of Nolita’s and it’s a real vibe. For a long time, parking downtown became a huge headache for us, so we feel fortunate to have this new home.”
Having worked in the food industry since they were in high school, Alden and Hylene had always dreamed of one day owning their own restaurant or food truck.
Since launching MI SU Street Food back in 2021, the husband and wife duo have quickly gone from new kids on the block to a local favorite.
"Our goal with Nolita’s is to create a space that can be a one-stop shop for savory and sweet."
MI SU, which translates to “mine and yours” in Spanish, offers a rotating menu of unique Mexican-American snacks and specialty smash burgers—all of which can now be ordered inside Nolita’s.
“We now recommend that everything be ordered inside of Nolita’s. You order at the counter and simply pick up your food outside at the truck. While we are a counter service establishment, we are trying to go above and beyond whenever we can to make our guest experience as enjoyable as possible,” Garcia said.
The Garcias plan to launch the soft serve ice cream bar in April, which will feature a variety of tasty homemade toppings.
“We are going to offer an extensive soft serve program that mainly focuses on scratch-made toppings, ranging from homemade cookie dough to fun sauces like our personal favorite, our strawberry hibiscus glaze,” Garcia said.
Nolita’s features a cozy and colorful family-friendly vibe and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Large murals and art by local artists provide fun pops of color throughout the space, creating a fun and vibrant atmosphere.
“Art is a huge part of our lives and we have commissioned some amazing art work from local artists such as Daniela de Castro, Poppy Garcia, Dave Ham, Nate Johnston and Aidan Garcia,” Garcia said.
The name Nolita’s was inspired
by a member of the Garcia family— their beloved dog Nola—which also happens to be the couple’s favorite city.
“The new school restaurants of New Orleans are a huge inspiration to us, and we like to believe we are emulating them,” Garcia explained.
“Places like Turkey and the Wolf and Flour Moon Bagels tend to have more relaxed environments with food that is more fun than fancy.”
When it comes to who cooks the food, Alden and the MI SU crew prepare the savory food items, and Hylene and her future crew are in charge of the sweets and baked goods.
While Nolita’s currently offers an abundance of tasty craft sodas, the Garcia’s said they hope to begin offering beer and wine in the near future.
“After four years of opening MI SU in our hometown, we are very excited to expand our offerings and bring something unique to Pensacola. We appreciate the support from our core fan base and we can’t wait to see some new faces now that we have our own brick-and-mortar,” Garcia said. Nolita’s is open Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 9 pm, and on Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10 pm. You can also sample the Garcia’s newly launched fried chicken menu for lunch on Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm. KING AERO BUILDS DEMO JET ENGINE FOR GEORGE STONE STUDENTS
King Aero Management, Pensacola supplier and repairer of aircraft turboprop engine parts, has a unique connection to the George Stone Technical College. The two have been working together for several years to help build the future of aviation mechanic jobs in the area. This Friday, the relationship culminates as King Aero delivers a specially designed demo aircraft turboprop engine with cutaways so students can see firsthand how these engines operate.
King Aero, which was founded in the 60s, quickly discovered a niche market for parts and repair of the Rolls‐Royce T56/501D jet engines, commonly found in the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. They now occupy 34,000 square feet of space behind the new Baptist Hospital. Chris Walls, president of King Aero, said their ongoing relationship with George Stone has helped him gain valuable team members while they give back to the school through demonstrations, visits and now providing a demo engine one of his team members built from spare parts.
“We’re a third-generation company in this engine market,” said Walls. “My grandparents started the company back in the early 60s capitalizing on the need for repairs and parts for this particular engine. Fast forward and as a result of our relationship with George Stone, we hired students Sean Rader and Will Keethler, who have been with us since 2017. Sean put in the extra work on the demo engine and we’re so excited to be able to get it into the hands of those students.”
The initial work for starting the Aviation Maintenance Technology program at George Stone Technical College began in 2014 and the first class was held in 2017. The program has been growing ever since under the watchful eye of the Aviation Mechanics instructor, Bill Davis. Davis, an Air Force veteran who spent 35 years with the Hurricane Hunters in engine maintenance said their partnership with King Aero is a huge benefit for his students.
“In class, when you start talking about how air moves or the physics of air movement, and talking about how it moves through each stage of this engine, it’s hard to for students to visualize what I’m describing,” said Davis. “I can explain it to them on the board all day long, but they can’t really grasp it until they can physically put their hands on it. With this demo engine, I’ll be able to show them a real example that they get their hands on — it gives them a whole different perspective.”
Former student and King Aero employee Sean Rader said there were a lot of blood, sweat and tears in fabricating the engine.
“It was a lot of work but feels good to give back to the school that got me to where I'm at in the first place,” said Rader. “Just being able to be a part of helping their program grow is very fulfilling.”
Walls said over the years, FloridaWest has helped King Aero get to where they are today.
“FloridaWest has been our partner for many years, connecting us with industry partners and helping us grow,” said Walls. “And I know they’ll be right there with us as we grow. With George Stone, we've talked about enhancing our partnership in the future as King Aero grows so we can provide more opportunities and help give the students a better visual, practical understanding of what's going on in the aviation maintenance world.”
FloridaWest CEO Chris Platé said King Aero is a perfect example of a business proactively planning for the future.
“We’ve been working with King Aero for many years — their vision of supporting education and giving back is directly helping them grow as they help create quality talent right here at home,” said Platé. “What they’re doing with George Stone is so important to the future of aviation maintenance in our region and just a start of what they have planned for the future.”

DAMIAN’S ICE CREAM AND ATL COLD STORAGE BREAK GROUND ON NEW FACILITY AT NORTHWEST FLORIDA INDUSTRIAL PARK
Damian’s Ice Cream and ATL Cold Storage officially broke ground on their new state-ofthe-art facility at Northwest Florida Industrial Park @ I-10 on Thursday, Feb. 20. This $8 million project marks a significant expansion for both companies and underscores their commitment to supporting local economic growth and job creation in Santa Rosa County.
“What a sweet day for Damian’s and ATL Cold Storage! We’re thrilled to be breaking ground on a facility that’s going to take our operations to the next level,” said Joseph R. Manning, President of Damian’s Enterprises. “This new campus is more than just bricks and mortar—it’s a statement of our commitment to quality, innovation, and, of course, keeping the ice cream coming.”
The new campus will serve as a hub for Damian’s Enterprises’ growing distribution network and support its recently formed partnership with ATL Cold Storage. With Damian’s 47-year legacy in the frozen dessert industry and ATL’s 35 years of cold storage expertise, the collaboration is expected to enhance food distribution efficiency across the region. The facility, set to be operational by October 2025, will bring more than 30 new jobs to the area, further bolstering the local economy.
Santa Rosa County officials and local business leaders joined in the celebration of this milestone.
“We’re not just breaking ground—we’re laying the foundation for more jobs, more growth, and a stronger local economy,” said
Santa Rosa County Commissioner Kerry Smith.
“We’re proud to have Damian’s and ATL Cold Storage investing in our community. This is a win for local businesses, a win for workers, and a win for everyone who enjoys great ice cream.”
Founded in 1978 by Tony Jacobs, Damian’s Enterprises began as a frozen lemonade company before expanding into one of the region’s leading frozen, full-service merchandising direct store delivery (DSD) operations. ATL Cold Storage, with over three decades of experience, has been a key player in the industry, providing top-tier storage and distribution services.
“There’s nothing cooler than ice cream, except ice cream that’s sprinkled with jobs, layered with capital investment, and handdipped in the local economy,” said Shannon Ogletree, executive director of the Santa Rosa County Economic Development Office (SREDO). “That makes Damian’s cooler than a polar bear’s pinky toe, and we are very proud they’re growing here.”
According to Manning, the successful launch of this project is due in part to the collaboration with key partners, including SREDO, led by Ogletree; architect Danny Grundhoefer of Quina Grundhoefer Architects; general contractor partners Hanto and Clarke; and banking partner Karen Wright from The First Bank.
He also paid tribute to the man who launched Damian’s with a “special thanks to our founder, a great visionary, and dear friend, Tony Jacobs.”

STATE COULD ALLOW APALACHICOLA OYSTER HARVESTING
JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
State wildlife officials are devising plans to allow some commercial oyster harvesting next year in Northwest Florida’s Apalachicola Bay, despite no major improvements in the bay after a halt during the past four years.
With local officials saying an industry revival would create a more economically diverse community, members of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on Wednesday expressed support for a staff plan that could allow oyster harvesting at the start of 2026 in a small part of the bay, which once produced most of Florida’s oysters.
Devin Resko, biological administrator with the commission’s Division of Marine Fisheries Management, said a series of workshops, including two in Franklin County, will be used to collect input before oyster rule changes are put forward in August for the bay and statewide. The potential changes are expected to be finalized by November.
“This is not an Apalachicola Bay issue. This is not a Florida issue, a Gulf issue, or a United States issue,” Resko told the commission during a meeting at Florida State University. “This is a global issue of dramatically declining oyster populations.”
Apalachicola Bay once supplied more than 90 percent of Florida’s oysters and 10 percent of the oysters sold nationally.
Cheryl Carr, secretary of the Seafood Work And Waterman's Association, said families who have spent their lives oystering are “struggling to put food on their tables and pay their bills” and that there are consequences of prolonged closures.
“When oyster beds remain closed for too long, they don’t just recover, they degrade,” Carr said. “Without harvesting, the reefs become choked with sediment and organic debris.”
Commission members discussed a need to improve communications with the Apalachicola region.
“We really need to get down there so you commissioners can all see first-hand it’s changed the face of that community,” commission Chairman Rodney Barreto told other members. Resko said many estuaries in the state have lost 80 to 90 percent of their oyster reefs.
Franklin County Commission Chairman Ricky Jones said that with the bay closed to oystering, the economy of the region is more than 90 percent dependent on tourism.
“Franklin County wants the bay open,” Jones said. “It’s not just about the bay itself for the ecology, but for the fishery, for the economy of Franklin County.”
“We’re optimistic about getting this bay back to its once glory,” Franklin County Commissioner Ottice Amison said. “We feel like the FWC (Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) has the opportunity to do something a lot of others along the Gulf Coast haven’t had the opportunity to do, which is to knock it out of the park. We want you to succeed.”
The state agency has also asked lawmakers to include $20 million for Apalachicola Bay restoration efforts in the 2025-2026 fiscal year budget, which will be negotiated during the legislative session that begins on Tuesday.
The bay and the industry have faced problems for more than a decade because of issues such as drought and overharvesting. Florida also has long contended that excessive water use by Georgia has caused damage. The bay is at the southern end of the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system, which starts in northern Georgia.
In December 2020, the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission approved suspending commercial oyster harvesting as part of a $20 million restoration effort. At the time, commission members said the suspension, set to end Jan. 1, 2026, could be shortened if improvements were seen in the oyster population and the condition of the bay.
Money for the restoration effort came from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Gulf Environmental Benefits Fund. That fund receives money from a settlement with BP and Transocean over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.
A commission staff presentation on Wednesday noted “no significant recovery has occurred since the 2013 collapse.”
But Resko pointed to signs that limited areas could reopen as part of a plan to restore 2,000 acres by 2032. The plan would require annual funding of $30 million to $55 million.
DONALDS FORMALLY ENTERS GOVERNOR’S RACE
JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
After announcing his candidacy Tuesday night on Fox News, Florida Congressman Byron Donalds filed paperwork Wednesday to formally enter the 2026 race for governor.
Donalds, a Naples Republican, became the first major candidate to enter the race to succeed term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis. Donalds made the move after receiving backing last week from President Donald Trump.
“I stand shoulder to shoulder with President Trump who’s ushering in the golden age of America and that effort starts in the states,” Donalds said in a prepared statement Wednesday. “Florida must continue to lead the way in education reform, economic opportunity, lowering costs for families, protecting public safety and in defending our God-given rights and freedoms. We will create a stronger, safer and more prosperous Florida with the freedom to live without liberal policies destroying our way of life.”
The paperwork, filed at the Florida Division of Elections, came after Donalds announced he would run while appearing on the “Hannity” show on Fox News. If elected, Donalds would become Florida’s first Black governor.
Trump, in a social-media post last week, wrote, “Donalds would be a truly great and powerful governor for Florida and, should he decide to run, will have my complete and total endorsement. Run, Byron, Run!”
Speculation has swirled for months about Donalds and other potential GOP gubernatorial candidates, including Florida First Lady Casey
DeSantis, Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson and former Congressman Matt Gaetz. Potential Democratic candidates include state Senate Minority Leader Jason Pizzo, D-Sunny Isles Beach.
Trump’s endorsement could give Donalds a major advantage in a Republican primary, though Ron DeSantis this week touted his wife and appeared to take a shot at Donalds.
“During an appearance Monday in Tampa, DeSantis said Congress needs to put Trump’s executive orders into law and that with the GOP holding a narrow advantage in the House, “trying to campaign other places and missing these votes, I think, is not something that's advisable at all.”
“The reality is we've achieved victories in Florida. We need to start achieving those victories up there,” DeSantis said. “So I think people look at it and say, ‘You know you got a guy like Byron, he just hasn't been a part of any of the victories that we've had here over the left over these last years.’ He's just not been a part of it. He's been in other states campaigning, doing that, and that's fine. But deliver results up there.”
Donalds praised Ron DeSantis while on the Hannity show.
“We have a great governor. Ron DeSantis has done a tremendous job for our state,” Donalds said. “But now the job is to keep the best state in the country as the best state in the country, and so that’s going to be the mission at hand.”
Donalds served from 2016 to 2020 in the Florida House, before getting elected to Congress.

CITIZENS DROPS BELOW 850,000 POLICIES
JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
The state’s Citizens Property Insurance Corp. last week shed about 100,000 policies, with its number of customers dropping to the lowest total in nearly three years.
Citizens, which was created as an insurer of last resort but ballooned in recent years to become the state’s largest insurer, had 844,688 policies as of Friday, according to newly posted data on its website. That was down from 945,005 policies a week earlier and 942,810 policies two weeks earlier.
The drop coincided with eight private insurers last week being able to assume Citizens policies under what is known as a “depopulation” program. Under that program, private insurers seek approval to take certain numbers of Citizens policies.
A report scheduled to go before the Citizens Market Accountability Advisory Committee on Wednesday said regulators approved allowing insurers to assume a maximum of 342,918 Citizens policies last week — though the actual numbers of policies that leave Citizens are typically far below the maximums allowed.
The last time Citizens’ policy count was below 850,000 was in spring 2022. It had 817,926 policies on March 31, 2022, before jumping to 851,006 on April 30, 2022.
Citizens reached as many as 1.4 million policies in 2023, as private carriers dropped customers and raised rates amid financial problems. The total has dropped because of numerous depopulation rounds and improved conditions in the private market, according to insurance officials.
Citizens President and CEO Tim Cerio told a House panel this month that Citizens expects to end 2025 with slightly fewer than 771,000 policies. Additional rounds of depopulation are scheduled in March and April.
State leaders have long sought to hold down the number of policies in Citizens, at least in part because of financial risks if the state gets hit by a major hurricane or multiple hurricanes. If Citizens didn’t have enough money to pay claims, policyholders
throughout the state — including possibly non-Citizens policyholders — could get hit with extra charges known as assessments.
But the depopulation program also can lead to higher costs for customers shifted to private insurers. That is because of a law requiring Citizens customers to accept offers of coverage from private insurers if the offers are within 20 percent of the cost of Citizens premiums. For example, if a homeowner received an offer of coverage from a private insurer that is 19 percent higher than the Citizens premium, the homeowner would have to accept it.
Citizens had as few as 419,475 policies in October 2019. Cerio told the House Insurance & Banking Subcommittee this month that such totals might have been artificially low.
“In hindsight, there’s been some suggestion that maybe some companies did (policy) takeouts that didn’t have the financial wherewithal that they should have,” leading to policyholders later coming back to Citizens, he said.
Cerio said he hopes a target number for Citizens policies would be in the 500,000s or low 600,000s, though he said state Insurance Commissioner Michael Yaworsky thinks the “magic number” is about 700,000.
Cerio said private companies are not “taking the riskiest of the risky” policies as part of the depopulation process.
“The term ‘cherry pick’ is often used about the takeout process, and I would argue that is not a bad thing,” Cerio told lawmakers. “These are private companies that are deploying capital, and each of them have different appetites for risk, they have different appetites in certain areas of the state, they all have different business models. And so the idea is, as a residual insurer, we (Citizens) should have those policies that no one else wants, and so when the market hardens, we grow and policies are coming into Citizens that normally the private market would want to be interested in. Maybe somebody’s cutting the number of writings that they’re doing or they even leave the state or they actually go insolvent. That’s when we grow. As the market’s recovering, we shrink.”
UTHMEIER, MOODY PLAN 2026 BIDS
NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
SAUNDERS
JIM
New Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has taken the first step toward running for a full term in 2026, while his predecessor, Ashley Moody, is gearing up to defend her U.S. Senate seat.
Uthmeier, who was sworn in last week as attorney general after serving as chief of staff to Gov. Ron DeSantis, opened a campaign account Monday for the 2026 race, according to the state Division of Elections website.
DeSantis appointed Uthmeier after tapping Moody to succeed Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate. Rubio became U.S. secretary of state in January. Moody filed paperwork Monday at the Federal Election Commission for a 2026 Senate campaign, according to the federal agency’s website.
Uthmeier, a 37-year-old Republican, had not previously held elected office, but he was a longtime top aide to DeSantis, including managing DeSantis’ unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign. He is the only candidate who has opened a campaign account to run for attorney general in 2026. After being appointed to finish Moody’s term, he would be eligible to serve two full four-year terms.
During a Feb. 17 swearing-in ceremony at the Old Capitol, Uthmeier hit on themes popular with Republican voters. He said would approach the office with an “America first agenda” that fights drug cartels and maintains DeSantis' approach to government.
“We will not stand idly by as the left tries to infiltrate our institutions and use the court system to indoctrinate our kids,” Uthmeier
said. “We will fight the activists that try to weaken our duly enacted laws, that try to challenge our constitutional order and try to harm the unborn.”
Among his actions during the first week were filing a class-action lawsuit that alleged Target Corp. did not properly disclose to investors the risks of a 2023 LGBTQ Pride campaign that drew a consumer backlash and caused a drop in the retailer’s stock price.
Moody, who was first elected attorney general in 2018, also was a key DeSantis ally on issues such as fighting against the Biden administration on immigration enforcement. Rubio was re-elected to a six-year term in 2022, but his departure from the Senate requires the seat to go on the 2026 ballot.
DeSantis also must make an appointment to the Cabinet post of state chief financial officer, as incumbent Jimmy Patronis has submitted his resignation to run in a special election for a Northwest Florida congressional seat.
State Sen. Joe Gruters, R-Sarasota, has opened a campaign account to run for chief financial officer in 2026 and has backing from President Donald Trump. But it remains unclear who DeSantis will appoint to fill out the remainder of Patronis’ term — an appointee who ostensibly could go into the 2026 campaign as the incumbent.
DeSantis said Monday he will wait until after the upcoming legislative session to appoint a chief financial officer and a lieutenant governor, after former Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez last week became interim president of Florida International University. The 60-day session starts March 4.
