THEGARDENROUTE

O

A comprehensive guide to one of the country’s most spectacular areas

ne of southern Africa’s most popular locations, the Garden Route, stretches all the way from Mossel Bay on the Western Cape coastline to the Eastern Cape, covering a vast region of vegetation, from lagoons and lakes to golden sand beaches. One of the most magical aspects of this scenic region is its diversity, which includes desert plains, subtropical

4

wilderness, beautiful long stretches of beaches and seaside towns. You can enjoy frolicking in the waves of the Indian Ocean with a pod of dolphins one morning, and within half an hour you can drive to the arid Klein Karoo to marvel at giant red rock formations, or explore the Cango Caves, ancient caves that date back centuries. From a social perspective, the Garden

Route has it all, for every type of person. Whether you’re looking for a simple camping holiday, or prefer five-star luxury, you’ll find it in this magnificent slice of paradise in the southern part of the Cape. In this edition of Garden Route Style, we cover some of the most beautiful and most popular areas to visit, including Plettenberg Bay, Oudtshoorn, George, Wilderness and Knysna.

Garden Route | info

5 REASONS TO VISIT THE GARDEN ROUTE

#1

GREAT WEATHER The area’s temperate climate includes very mild winters from May to August. Summers are pleasantly subtropical, offering visitors long days and slow sunsets.

#2

PARADISE FOUND Wherever you go, nature is at your doorstep, whether you’re on the fringes of the Indian Ocean or have the Outeniqua or the Tsitsikamma mountains as your backdrop. Towns are encircled by indigenous forests, and you have constant access to a vast expanse of mountain peaks, beaches, lakes, gorges, rivers, promontories and estuaries.

#3

NATURE’S TREASURE This stunning region is home to a spectacular array of flora and fauna, including the famous Knysna seahorse and the dwarf chameleon. Forest elephants still exist, and this region is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Whales are also in abundance from May to September.

#4

ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND Explore forests and hiking trails, seek adventure on the rivers and estuaries, go mountain biking or soak up the sun on an unspoilt beach. The Garden Route offers every imaginable outdoor activity, including horse riding, hiking, fishing, canoeing and yachting.

#5

FABULOUS FEAST Gourmands, rejoice – the Garden Route boasts some of the country’s best restaurants offering gourmet fare and scrumptious fresh seafood. But the area caters for all tastes… there’s a plethora of farmers’ markets offering fresh garden produce, award-winning artisanal bakeries, oyster shacks, craft beer breweries and boutique wine farms. Plett | info

Plettenberg Bay This paradise resort town offers everything required for a sensational holiday – sun, sea, sand and year-round good weather

D

riving to Plett, one passes through a lush forest region lying at the foot of the magnificent Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains. This is the gateway to paradise, the town of Plettenberg Bay, located on the spectacular eastern coastline of the southern Cape, just 210km from Port Elizabeth and approximately 600km from Cape Town. Early Portuguese explorers christened Plett ‘Bahia Formosa’ (‘Beautiful Bay’) and it is certainly spectacular – a conglomeration of hiking and mountain biking trails, rivers, beaches and the

6

bay itself, which offers every water sport imaginable, including rock and surf fishing and scuba diving. The beaches are superb stretches of endless sand, fringed by waves offering safe swimming. And then there’s the town, full of exclusive beach and country retreats, boutique hotels, self-catering chalets, cosy B&Bs and campsites. At night Plett comes alive, with a choice of excellent restaurants, pubs and night spots open till late. The area is a sports lover’s paradise, with excellent hiking and mountain biking trails, horse riding and plenty canoeing opportunities to be had.

Info CLIMATE Moderately hot summers, mild winters with rain. WHEN TO GO Year round. From July to December the endangered southern right whale comes to calve here – ideal time for whale viewing. WHAT TO SEE There are 10 nature and marine reserves, with coral reefs, dolphins and seals. Hiking trails in the Outeniqua-Tsitsikamma area, and the last remaining forest elephants in South Africa.

Plett | beaches

Beach life Sun, sea, sand and a fun holiday atmosphere epitomise what a Plett holiday is all about

ROBBERG BEACH

T

here are many beautiful beaches to enjoy in Plett. Central is the busiest and most crowded as it is close to the waterfront shops and amenities, and also used for marine launches. Robberg Beach boasts Blue Flag status and is accessible via wooden walkways at a number of points, from different roads. Robberg 5 is the only part of the beach that has ablution facilities – parking and access is from Beachy Head Road. It’s one of Plett’s most popular family and swimming beaches, thanks to everpresent lifeguards. Depending on the break, it’s also a surfer’s paradise. Further afield there are several beaches

8

located at Robberg Nature Reserve, which are wilder and unspoilt. There, one swims at one’s own risk, but being in such a secluded location makes it worthwhile. The Keurbooms Lagoon and River serves as a magnet for water sports lovers, while Keurbooms Beach is a more tranquil location, and its craggy surrounds are ideal for enjoying meandering walks, coastal explorations and fishing off the rocks. The Bitou River estuary is also a fishing hotspot and a major attraction for bird lovers. Nature’s Valley, the farthest beach from Plett, is a delightful mix of all the area’s beaches and worthy of a day trip.

In high season there are lifeguards on the beach, and if you feel adventurous, there are numerous opportunities to explore: canoe up the Groot River or walk to Salt River mouth. ALSO CONSIDER ADVENTURE LAND PLETTENBERG BAY This 24-hectare estate offers a variety of water slides (including a 75m super tube) and a safe playground for the kids. Ideally located between Plett and Knysna, it offers easy access off the N2 and is a summer sensation. www.adventurelandplett.co.za

Plett | wildlife

Animal antics Several animal sanctuaries are located close to Plett, making the area a paradise for animal lovers

TENIKWA

MONKEYLAND

JUKANI

T

op of the list are Monkeyland and Birds of Eden, located in the Crags. At both these locations all the birds and primates are free to roam and forage, to see and be seen, and go about their daily lives. They live much as nature intended – wild and free. The only difference is that they are not living in their own habitats. Humans had already removed them from their own habitat, by keeping them as pets, using them in experiments, or keeping them in cages. The lucky ones landed up in Plett at these two sanctuaries – their new homes for life, where they are given the best care possible. Monkeyland and Birds of Eden have created the blueprint for sanctuaries the world over. Both these sanctuaries, which are located side by side, offer restaurants, curio shops and necessary facilities.

Previously based near Mossel Bay, Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary has relocated to Plett’s surrounds. It’s situated just off the N2, next to the Puzzle Park and about 9km before the turn-off to the sister sanctuaries, Monkeyland and Birds of Eden. Jukani is dedicated to the preservation and wellbeing of big cats. You will find wild, untamed carnivores of all shapes and sizes, including the mighty Asian tiger and the jackal. Enjoy a guided tour to see captivebred furry felines (leopard, African wild cat, servals and caracal) living in a seminatural environment at Tenikwa Wildlife awareness Centre. You can even take a walk with the cheetahs. www.monkeyland.co.za | www.birdsofeden.co.za | www.jukani.co.za | www.tenikwa.com

ALSO CONSIDER THE ELEPHANT SANCTUARY Also based in The Crags, it offers a safe haven for elephants. Great for families, education is through interaction – one can touch, feed, walk or even ride on the elephants. www.elephantsanctuary.co.za LAWNWOOD SNAKE SANCTUARY The sanctuary is located in The Crags, and is home to more than 100 species of snake and reptile. www.lawnwoodsnakesanctuary.co.za RADICAL RAPTORS Located at The Heath, just off the N2 towards Harkerville, Radical Raptors offers the opportunity to view and handle birds of prey. www.radicalraptors.co.za NOAH’S PARK AND WOLF SANCTUARY Home to wolves, the endangered African wild dog and black-backed jackal. +27 82 938 4821 9

Knysna | info

Knysna With its magnificent setting, a holiday in Knysna, known as the capital of the Garden Route, is an absolute joy

K

nysna is home to one of the most exquisite geological features to be found along the coastline, the Knysna Heads. These great sandstone cliffs flank a deep estuary that forms the breathtakingly beautiful Knysna Lagoon. The setting is magnificent, making a holiday here an absolute joy. The town of Knysna nestles in lush forests close to the shores of the peaceful lagoon. Aside from the famous Knysna Heads, there are numerous other attractions and activities to enjoy. But a highlight of a visit here is the lookout point on the Eastern Head, which offers unmatched views of the

lagoon, Knysna and Leisure Isle. The lagoon supports an oyster hatchery that is also worth visiting. The town holds the annual Knysna Oyster Festival around early July, a festive time to visit, and the ideal time to enjoy the fruits of the sea. Other famous sights include Millwood House Museum as well as the Knysna Forest, home to ancient trees, both local and exotic, such as yellowwood, stinkwood, blackwood and Cape chestnut. The Millwood Gold Mine is worth exploring; alluvial gold was found here at Jubilee Creek in 1885 – the reason for the Gold Rush. The closest beach is Buffalo Bay.

Info CLIMATE Summers are perfect (temperature around 25°C) and winters are mild (average 16°C) with infrequent rainfall. WHEN TO GO Year round. Popular in winter, especially during the Knysna Oyster Festival (late June to early July). WHAT TO SEE The spectacular Knysna Heads, Knysna Waterfront in the town itself, Knysna Elephant Park, Featherbed Nature Reserve, Buffalo Bay, Millwood Goldmines. 21

Knysna | beaches

Water everywhere In Knysna, holidaymakers are spoiled for choice… the area is encircled by beaches and inviting rivers and lakes, most of them within half an hour’s drive from the town centre

KNYSNA LAGOON

BRENTON-ON-SEA

BOLLARD BAY

W

hen it comes to beaches, Noetzie is arguably the most inaccessible beach (be prepared to climb many steps on your way back up!). Coney Glen is a hidden gem (to get there, you have to hop over the eastern buttress of The Heads). And you’d better plan a long outing if you are considering Brenton-on-Sea and Buffalo Bay – but both will reward you with spectacular waves and vistas, as they are situated along a 7km stretch of coastline. Buffs, as Buffalo Bay is known among the locals, has Blue Flag status and is a magnet for surfers. Bollard Bay on Leisure Isle is by far the most family-friendly beach. It is located in the lagoon and kids 22

can wade and play in placid waist-high water without the need for lifesavers. If you find the Indian Ocean too rough, or on days when the wind whips blue bottles onto the beaches, do yourself a favour and head for the rivers. The Knysna River, inland from the White Bridge on the N2, is ideal for picnics and leisurely swims, as is the Goukamma River en route to Buffalo Bay. Other favourites are the more distant Diep, Hoëkraal and Karatara Rivers as they enter Swartvlei. Then there are the lakes: situated near Sedgefield, Swartvlei is demarcated for water sports, and Groenvlei for fishing (though you would need to show a permit). And there are more beaches near Sedgefield! Try Myoli and Gericke’s Point.

The latter is especially charming on a full moon evening, when you can stroll to the promontory to view marine life in the rock pools. Take sturdy shoes and a torch that functions under water. ALSO CONSIDER DRUPKELDERS You have to make your way to Biebieshoek on the Rheenendal Road to get there. The rock pools and waterfalls will blow your mind, but don’t even think of going down the gorge during rainy weather. And be sure to get a permit from one of the forest rangers on duty at the entrance.

George & Wilderness | info

George It’s not only the gateway to the Garden Route: George is a great spot to spend time en route to your holiday by the sea

C

apital of the southern Cape, this historic town, the sixth oldest in the country, is located halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth in the heart of the Garden Route. Many holidaymakers use George as the base from which to explore the Garden Route’s many treasures. If you decide to stop over in George, there is a lot to see and do. After all, George boasts two of the top 10 golf courses in the country, including Fancourt, and its

surroundings are spectacular, making it an ideal spot to go hiking or enjoy forest walks. Its excellent year-round weather makes it ideal for all sorts of water sports activities including diving, water-skiing, climbing, canoeing, sailing and surfing. As the gateway to magnificent scenery and numerous popular seaside towns, George offers historic sights including the national monument, The Slave Tree, and the Edwardian King Edward VII Library.

Info CLIMATE Moderately hot summers and mild winters. WHEN TO GO Year round. WHAT TO SEE Explore the town’s historic sites, enjoy various scenic walking or hiking trails and just relax in one of the most scenic areas in the southern Cape.

Wilderness Its name says it all – in the 19th century, Wilderness was in the middle of nowhere. Today, of course, it’s a popular and scenic holiday destination

M

uch like the rest of the Garden Route, the weather in Wilderness is superb all year round, and even winter is warm and sunny. The first old farmstead located in the area later became a seaside boarding house, and today it still exists, as the Karos Wilderness Hotel. It’s famous for stunning long beaches and tranquil sea. It’s also renowned for its exquisite natural beauty,

32

with numerous rivers, lakes and lagoons. The Wilderness National Park boasts five rivers, five lakes and two estuaries as well as 18km of coastline. It’s also home to various wildlife and birds, and for hiking, dolphin and whale watching, hanggliding, paragliding, horse riding and fun mountain biking. One of the highlights is Dolphin Point, with a panoramic view of the sea and whales and dolphins.

Info CLIMATE Excellent year round with hot summers and warm, sunny winters. WHEN TO GO Year round. WHAT TO SEE Numerous eateries, art galleries, shops and craft markets. Take ferry cruises, go fishing, boating and sample other water sports.

George & Wilderness | beaches

Fun in the sun With so many beautiful beaches to choose from, you have no reason to go home without a tan

WILDERNESS BEACH

A

lthough Wilderness boasts roughly 18km of uninterrupted coastline and a vast number of beaches, most of them are located within the national park, which means they are far removed from parking and other public amenities and have no lifesavers on duty. The stretch from Kleinkrantz to Gericke’s Point is particularly distant and offers excellent beachcombing terrain. The safest swimming beaches are on either side of the Touws River mouth, just off the N2, where the NSRI offices are also reassuringly located. Parking, showers and toilet facilities are abundant. Leentjiesklip and the other beaches immediately adjacent to it are the best protected from rip currents. In summer,

the former serves as a landing pad for the ubiquitous paragliders who launch from the crest of Map of Africa; it offers braai and picnic facilities, too. The best surfing spot, especially for beginners, is Victoria Bay, located farther south-west and closer to George. Set in a lovely cove surrounded by rugged cliffs, it can get very crowded at the height of the summer season. Just 15 minutes drive from George you’ll find the Gwaing River Mouth – a popular spot where the locals swim, camp, braai and go fishing. To get there, drive down Beach Road through the historical town of Pacaltsdorp. A lot of holidaymakers often frequent the beaches (Herolds Bay, Glentana,

Bothastrand and Pienaarstrand) that are situated in a south-western sweep towards Mossel Bay. The Klein Brak and Groot Brak estuaries form part of this magnificent natural playground.
