FROM THE
EDITOR T
his issue has a special place in my heart for a number of reasons. It heralds a new year in which we’re all hoping that the past two years remain just that – in the past. But it means so much more. A beautiful book was born last year and the opportunity to ghostwrite Just Teddy – Petals from Paris came out of nowhere. The magical creations of baker extraordinaire Teddy, of Just Teddy, have graced the pages of Nubian Bride since the store opened its doors in 2019. His wedding cakes are legendary – and for good reason. These delicious concoctions are on another level when it comes to taste, originality and sheer beauty. The story behind the Zaki family, who runs Just Teddy, is a beautiful one, one that I was privileged enough to help them share with the world. For a taste of Petals from Paris, you’ll find Teddy’s magical creations in this issue on page 120. Teddy’s legendary cakes also graced the tables at the bridal shower of his daughter, Jordyne, before she married her childhood sweetheart, Tiago, on 5 February at a magical location in Cape Town. And I was invited to share in the family’s joy, which is an honour. Of course, I also shared many issues of Nubian Bride with Jordyne to give her some ideas of what to do and where to go to put together the perfect wedding. Because that is exactly what Nubian Bride is all about – we offer advice and information for everything you need to know when planning the ideal marriage celebration. This issue is no exception. Marius Barnard of Weddings by Marius, legendary South African wedding planner and expert in everything bridal, offers a list of wedding trends to give you inspiration on page 20 and put together a magnificent planning story featuring a Hindu wedding (see page 24). Our magnificent fashion pages (page 66) offer more inventiveness as we showcase exquisite locally made and international gowns, as well as accessories for the bridesmaid, flower girl and page boy. We have all sorts of ideas for beauty, hair, make-up, venues, the registry and honeymoons… Nubian Bride has gone all out to offer you an issue filled with innovation to help you express your individuality and showcase your love on your Big Day. It’s all here waiting for you on these stunning pages – so let’s begin your wedding adventure! We can’t wait to share it with you!

WEDDING TRENDS FOR 2022 Marius from Weddings by Marius gives his predictions for the coming year
A new year means a new perspective and lots to look forward to, especially if 2022 will finally be your wedding year. Although your Big Day may seem far away, it is a good idea start planning early and incorporating trends that the experts are currently predicting. Here’s some advice on what to look forward to, and start planning for, if you’re having a 2022 wedding.
Picture Unsplash, courtesy images
NATURAL AND CONTEMPORARY RENTALS Rattan elements, macramé tassel chandeliers, wishbone chairs and plush seating in neutrals have created an earthy and comfortable visual for the home this year. Traditional interior design sets the trends, so this look will also become popular for weddings in 2022. Recently the wedding industry started using contemporary furniture, such as cloud couches, and other soothing touches and palettes that work extremely well in natural outdoor settings.
WEEKDAY WEDDINGS As there’s been a surge in demand for events, many couples have accepted that a Thursday (even a Wednesday) wedding is just as great as a Saturday one (and it could be cheaper, too). In fact, weekday weddings give couples an opportunity to extend the wedding experience for their loved ones. To be honest, weddings during the week and elopements are definitely the biggest shift I’ve seen in weddings, and I anticipate this will continue in the future.
GOLD TONES It’s time for rose gold to shift over – there’s a new metallic in town! Gold is one of the most traditional hues, but after years of standing on the periphery, this colour is making a come-back. Gold chairs, gold cutlery, gold under plates… gold blends with every style of wedding, whether you adore classic touches or a modern look.
TRENDS SUSTAINABLE PRODUCE – GREEN WEDDINGS Mindful consumption and carbon impact will become greater considerations as we move further into the 21st century – and weddings are no exception. As the focus on sustainable, seasonal and local produce becomes more prevalent, it’s also shifting to weddings and other celebratory events. More couples are becoming conscious of their choices and considering sustainability when deciding on flowers, décor and dining. SMALL GUEST LISTS While couples will invite more than just a handful of guests, it looks like we’ll still be proceeding with relative caution. Maybe we’ve come to appreciate the closeness of a smaller gathering. So, with the pandemic in mind, I think smaller and more intimate weddings will be here to stay.
FAMILY-STYLE DINING A love for family and friends will pervade the design and décor experience of 2022 weddings. We’ll see this explored through more sophisticated yet luxurious table details and elevated family-style dining. Expect guest experiences that are less formal, and more Italian- inspired.
EARTHY, NATURE-INSPIRED DÉCOR There will be an increased focus on the environment – many people have spent more time outside because of the pandemic and they have a newfound appreciation for nature. So, for décor, I think the colour palette is moving towards earthy, natural colours. Rust is my prediction as the colour for 2022. Another popular palette will be soft pastels – particularly in the realms of floral bouquets and bridal wear. I think we’ll see lots of soft lilacs, lemons and shades of rosé. Contrasting colours will also see an increase come 2022. We’ll see bolder shades, such as hydrangea blue, balanced with neutral shades, which will also be popular. If styled well, colour can bring a vibrant and fun feel to a destination affair, without having to travel to experience it — and let’s face it, that’s something we’re all craving!
INSIDE-OUTSIDE GARDEN VENUES Perhaps one of the most scenic and safe precautions to emerge from the pandemic is the idea of bringing the outdoors in by using indoor/outdoor venues. We’re talking a tent, perhaps a patio, the backyard of your holiday home, or perhaps a barn setting that flows from the venue into a garden or outdoors. My advice: if you can’t find a venue that speaks to your theme, look for an open-air space that you can use as a blank canvas to decorate from scratch. You can transform any space with lighting, or even fabric; this adds a whimsical, elegant vibe to any location.

TRENDS WEDDING CAKES GO BOLD If you do decide to have a wedding cake, make sure it causes your guests to do a double take. The new year brings rich colours, uneven tier heights, alternative textures, messy buttercream, mid-tier pedestals and metallic colours stun the scene.
MULTI-DAY EXPERIENCES For me, 2022 will be about smaller weddings and more experiences. If you’re planning a destination wedding, consider spreading it out over a few days. In fact, this works even if you’re staying in your home town. While everyone is in one place, grab the opportunity to schedule preand post-wedding events. Why not enjoy a three-day weekend experience that allows guests to celebrate with you not only on the wedding day, but also on the days before and after? It’s a great way to create some additional memories with friends and family. FAIRY-TALE LIGHTING How you light your indoor and/or outdoor spaces at the reception sets the tone and mood for the entire evening, so it’s no surprise that fairy lights have made my list of the top wedding trends for 2022. We’re seeing all sorts of dreamy, unique, statement lighting options for this year, all of which will create a magical, movie-worthy vibe. Take your pick from naked light bulbs, festoon lights, vintage chandeliers or classic fairy lights.
DESTINATION WEDDINGS A smaller number of guests offers more flexibility when it comes to location. Having a destination wedding offers the couple and their guests the time to celebrate the marriage as well as a holiday – an exciting, all-in-one experience.

CAKE ALTERNATIVES Why be traditional when you can present a more unique way to give a sugar rush? While wedding cakes are simply beautiful in every way, they usually come with a bulky price tag. What’s more: guests often don’t eat the cake. Sometimes this is because they’ve been created to look good rather than taste delicious. Other times it’s because people are so busy having fun at the wedding that they forget to eat the cake. So, save the day with an alternative – anything from a cheese tower and ice cream concoction to macarons or chocolate brownies. Perhaps write a list of your favourite desserts and find a local caterer who can make these. Or have wedding goodie bags for guests to take home, filled with delicious treats.
E D I TO R’S T R E N D S Sharon Preston offers her take on wedding trends for 2022
MAKE YOURS A SAFARI WEDDING! There are some exciting wedding trends emerging, and one of these is towards exclusive experiences, often shared with family and friends. More and more couples are deciding to combine their wedding and honeymoon in an exotic destination. Of course, the size of the wedding is much smaller this way, but you can enjoy shared, unique experiences that are unforgettable. Nothing beats an immersive holiday where you can relax, get away from it all and connect with loved ones. Communing with nature is extremely popular, whether you have your wedding/ honeymoon experience at a safari lodge or choose a remote seaside setting. We recommend Abelane Safari Lodge for this one-of-a-kind experience. See our review of Abelane on page 105 in the Honeymoons section!
NAILING IT! BRIDAL NAIL TRENDS What’s trending for brides’ nails right now? Nubian Bride asked mani/pedi expert Zola Buti, a nail technician whose years of experience have made her the go-to person for many Gauteng brides. “Trends change, so rather keep it classic,” Zola says. She suggests a subtle, soft look so that the ring and the wedding dress can take centre stage. Zola’s tips: • Add a touch of pink or nude in a gradient effect to white nails for a modern touch. • Go natural with a gellish look that blends perfectly with everything. • Avoid going the pastel route – compared to a white dress, pastels will look bright. • The French manicure never goes out of style. This is a stylish choice for many brides. • Avoid going strong matte white or neutral with lots of extras – it’s just too much. Contact Zola – zolabuti@icloud.com or 073 700 4905.

A WORLD-CLASS WEDDING CELEBRATION Wedding planner extraordinaire Marius Barnard describes a meticulously planned three-day Hindu wedding celebration that he and his company put together in 2019
PLANNING A Hindu wedding ceremony is like no other and Weddings by Marius had the awesome opportunity to coordinate and plan an extravagant three-day Hindu wedding for Anuradha and Sachin at a spectacular Durban wedding venue, The Capital Zimbali, near Ballito. Initially, the wedding celebrations were booked for Cape Town, but Anu and Sachin had a sudden change of heart and settled for the striking venue near Durban instead. “We worked for nearly seven entire months,” Marius remembers. “This Hindu wedding ceremony had to be absolutely flawless.”
Day 1 Festivities kicked off on 17 October, 2019 with a welcome dinner hosted at The Capital Zimbali. The majority of guests booked an entire week’s stay at the resort. “It was an extraordinary event,” Marius remembers, “replete with a live band, whisky and cigar lounge. The room was bedecked to the nines and radiated style and elegance, despite the event being an informal get-together for friends. A braai and colourful drinks were followed by an after party of note, held at the resort’s ballroom, where dancing continued until the wee hours.”
www.nubianbride.co.za |
25
Day 2 The following day at noon, all the guests were invited to an exotic pool and mehendi party (this is where the bride and her female guests are decorated with traditional hand art). “The venue was decked out in the exquisite traditional colours one would expect of a Hindu wedding,” Marius explains. “The event included food stations and entertainment provided by a skilled caricaturist. While the DJ expertly mixed his music, the ladies were lavishly decorated with mehindi art and the gents enjoyed themselves around the swimming pool.” That evening, guests congregated on the deck of the resort’s restaurant for a magical al fresco dinner under the African sky. “Our team set up thousands of lights and cocktail tables, comfortable low dinner tables, luxurious daybeds and designer lounge nooks so that guests could relax after a day at the pool,” says Marius.
Day 3 On the morning of the main wedding ceremony, the set-up commenced in earnest. The venue for the ceremony was the upper pool deck. Here, a traditional wedding mandap was set up – a purpose-built, stagelike structure was constructed over the swimming pool with a ‘floating’ walkway for the couple to reach the sacred altar where they would be married. The groom’s family met at the pool area close to the beach at 2pm to start off the baraat – the groom’s wedding procession. The groom and his family members were transported to the wedding venue in a decorated golf cart. The bride’s family congregated at the wedding mandap and waited in anticipation for the groom to arrive. Then came the moment everyone waits for at a Hindu wedding ceremony – the arrival of the bride and her bridesmaids. “When Anu entered with her bridal party, everyone gasped,” Marius remembers. Anu looked absolutely exquisite in her Sabyasachi designer sari. During the sacred three-hour traditional ceremony, guests enjoyed high tea and other refreshments. This was followed by a photo shoot that took a number of hours. Then everyone retired to their rooms to prepare for the evening’s festivities.

The reception, a gala dinner, began after 8pm. Called a sangeet (a term used to describe a celebratory event during an Indian wedding), it was held in the resort’s ballroom. The word sangeet translates to ‘music night’ or ‘musical party’ – and it certainly lived up to its name. As guests arrived, they were welcomed with a choice of champagne or wine plus delicious canapés. The doors to the ballroom swung open to reveal a scene that mirrored all of Anu’s dreams for this momentous occasion. The décor included delicate duck egg blue table linen, ghost chairs and a mixture of round, rectangular and square tables laden with gold cutlery and gold-rimmed glassware. It was elegance personified. A waterfall mounted on steel trusses erupted in a shower of golden sparks as the bride and groom entered for the start of the reception. “We masterfully framed the main table with an abundance of ‘growing’ florals so that it was brimming with colour and style,” Marius explains. Dinner commenced with a delicate mushroom soup followed by an entrée of Greek mezze, berry sorbet and a choice of either braised lamb shoulder, seared line fish or brinjal carpaccio. After the meal, the sangeet took over and the dancing began. “I am so proud of our team,” Marius adds. “We definitely showed that it is possible to create a world-class wedding event in South Africa. All it took was excellent organisation, careful planning and lots of hard work. “It was an absolute privilege to plan this magnificent event with this astonishing couple for close on seven months. They really are the most remarkable couple I have ever had the pleasure of coordinating a wedding for. Anu and Sachin completely trusted us to plan this amazing event – and that is a reward in itself. We cannot thank them enough for giving us this incredible opportunity!”

Mandy & Ditiro The perfect combination – a formal white wedding and a traditional Setswana celebration
REAL WEDDINGS
M
andy and Ditiro met at a church conference and have been inseparable ever since. He surprised her with a very romantic proposal. “He took me out for a romantic candlelit dinner and organised that the chef bring the ring in a covered serving dish. When the chef arrived, he told me he had prepared a new dish that he wanted me to taste. When I lifted the cover of the dish, I found a beautiful ring with the words ‘Will you marry me?’ written in chocolate sauce next to it. Right at that moment, waiters arrived, carrying flowers and chocolates!” The couple were married at The Finches Nest in Hammanskraal, a beautiful venue not far from the groom’s home. As the wedding was during lockdown, the celebration was an intimate one with close family and friends.
“I would definitely have loved to have more family and friends celebrate with us” “Our theme was white, gold and emerald,” Mandy says. “We were inspired by the time of year we were getting married, which was spring, and we wanted some elegance in this leafy venue. “We also needed something that would complement our traditional blue and white Tswana colours, and it worked perfectly.” Mandy chose the design of her wedding gown. “I knew that my dressmaker, Thuli from Roster Bridal Boutique, would bring it to life – and she did exactly that,” she says with a smile. The couple included their cultural heritage in their wedding day. Mandy and her family arrived at the Maubane home with gifts. She was traditionally welcomed to the family and given a blanket as well as new clothes to wear. A cow was slaughtered – the head (Tlhogo) was given to Malome and the back of the cow (Setlhana) was given to Rakgadi. According to tradition, as bakgatla they each got to celebrate with their families. “We had a brass band, which is customary in Setswana wedding celebrations,” Mandy explains. Both Mandy and Ditiro say that the highlight of their day was when they changed from formal attire into their traditional clothes and danced, accompanied by the brass band. “The band was on fire. The guests went absolutely wild during those moments,” Mandy remembers. “Another highlight was when our friends and parents came to share words of wisdom and encouragement for our journey ahead. It was a beautiful experience.” www.nubianbride.co.za |

REAL WEDDINGS
Mandy describes how the couple felt standing next to each other for the first time as husband and wife, “It was an amazing feeling – finally we had done it. It was a very emotional moment; God has really carried us.” Mandy and Ditiro say their wedding day was “amazing and eventful”. “The weather was beautiful and everybody danced to a live band,” Mandy remembers. Would she change anything about her Big Day? “Yes,” Mandy says emphatically. “I’d change the fact that we had Covid-19 restrictions. I would definitely have loved to have more family and friends celebrate with us.” Despite restrictions, they did manage to explore the Garden Route on honeymoon. Advice for a bride-to-be? “Only use reputable suppliers. And if you are not good at planning, get someone to help you. It is a stressful time and you want it to be your perfect wedding,” Mandy says. “On the day, focus on the moment and enjoy it!” she adds. Cikida & Ipeleng Their love story is so unique that the couple has posted it on Facebook for eternity. And Cikida and Ipeleng’s wedding was just as extraordinary…
REAL WEDDINGS
C
ikida and Ipeleng describe their romance as “a story of distance, time and perseverance.” According to Ipeleng, “We met on Facebook whilst remarking on the status of a mutual friend. Cikida was very feisty – this was a good thing! She was also smarter than me, which was even better. I eventually charmed her into giving me her number. A random series of dates followed whenever both of us were in the country at the same time. When she went to study abroad, I recommended a book, Americanah, which is essentially our love story. Once we were in the country together for more than six months, I pounced – the end!”
www.nubianbride.co.za |
39
This is what Cikida has to say: “I commented on a friend’s Facebook post and Ipeleng took the liberty of sliding into my DMs. He tricked me into giving him my number, saying he’d like to send me something funny about pretty girls (it actually wasn’t that funny!). We remained close for years whilst we lived across oceans. He recommended I read Americanah when I went to study in the US; it’s about a feisty young lady from Nigeria who travels to study in America, leaving her true love behind. They are later reunited. Long story short – he didn’t even wait six months after I returned home! I went along for the free lunches and good conversations and ended up falling into one of the sweetest loves I’ve ever experienced.” The proposal was a wonderful surprise, says Cikida. “Ipeleng said we were going to his niece’s birthday party at a restaurant close to Grand Central Airport in Midrand. When we arrived at the airport, we boarded a helicopter that took us to a stunning resort in Hartebeespoort Dam. There, he got down on one knee and proposed.” Cikida describes her wedding day as “magical – a true fairy tale. The theme was ‘Thy Kingdom Come: A Royal Affair’. It was a beautiful sunny day with clear skies. Ipeleng was accompanied down the aisle to a rendition of Daniel Caesar’s ‘Blessed’, whilst Grammy award-winning artist Manana sang his popular song ‘All I Seek’ as I walked down the aisle. Our guests enjoyed a live band and superb food prepared by Chef Andrew Draper and danced throughout the day.”
The bride’s wedding dress was designed by Valdrin Sahiti, who is famous for designing dresses for Beyoncé

The couple observed their cultural heritage by starting the reception by introducing the families. “This is a cultural representation of us welcoming each other as newly formed relatives and is a common practice in most African weddings,” Cikida explains. The bride’s wedding dress was designed by Valdrin Sahiti, who is famous for designing dresses for Beyoncé. The couple chose Inimitable Wedding Venue because “the style of the venue epitomises us as a couple in every way. From the open grass fields to the modern glass marquees, we felt this would be a true representation of our personality as a couple,” says Cikida. The highlight of Cikida’s day? “Ipeleng’s vows. They even trended on Twitter!” Standing next to each other as husband and wife “felt like destiny taking its course,” she adds. They plan to enjoy a honeymoon in Monaco watching the Grand Prix at the end of May this year. What advice would you give a bride-tobe? “Just relax and enjoy your day. Lose your script on how you had planned things to happen and just live in the moment.” Venue Inimitable Venue | www.inimitablevenue.com Decor Zavion Kotze Events Company | www.zk-ec.com Food Andrew Draper | www.andrewdraper.co.za Wedding planner Colossal Productions | www.facebook.com/colossalproductionsatl Photographers Figure of 8 Photography| www.figureof8.co.za Videographer Bucketlist Studios | www.thebucketliststudios.com Wedding gown Valdrin Sahiti | www.valdrinsahiti.com Groom’s suit Suitability | www.suitability.co.za

Olivia & Michael This thoroughly modern, extremely beautiful American wedding had every member of the family involved
REAL WEDDINGS
O
livia and Michael met the modern way – via a dating app. He surprised her by proposing one evening when she was expecting them to go out to enjoy happy hour. Instead, Olivia found Michael waiting in her backyard. “There was light and music and even my daughter was included in the proposal. And the next day, he surprised me further with a trip to one of my favourite American cities, Philadelphia.” The couple married in Biloxi, Mississippi in a charming historical building. “We picked the venue as it was close to where Michael’s family lives. The décor was modern, simple and romantic.” Olivia had her wedding gown custom made by a New York-based designer.

“All the people who matter to us were there. It was a party - it couldn’t have been any better” The wedding was small, and Olivia says: “All the people who matter to us were there. It was a party – it couldn’t have been any better.” Olivia and Michael are from different cultures (American and French). “We wanted to do something that felt natural to us, so we did what we felt was right,” she explains. For Olivia, the highlight of the wedding was “the dancing – and seeing my husband cry as I walked down the aisle.” Standing next to each other as husband and wife felt right, she says with a smile. The couple included their bridal party in their honeymoon. “We spent the weekend in New Orleans having fun,” Olivia remembers. What advice would she give a bride-to-be? “Don’t sweat the small things. It’s okay if the flowers aren’t perfect – seriously! The day will go by in a flash, so enjoy your time with family and friends. Monique & Enrico Paarl was the setting for this magical wedding
REAL WEDDINGS
M
onique’s best friend introduced her to Enrico at a beer festival in Franschhoek in 2016. They were soon inseparable. After going out for almost three years, Enrico organised a picnic at one of their favourite Franschhoek wine farms, Hidden Valley Wines. This was in March 2020. “I was busy cutting a French loaf when he suddenly asked me to stand up. I did, and he went down on one knee. This was such a shock that it took me two weeks to comprehend what had happened!” She describes the couple’s wedding venue, Belair Pavilion, as “absolutely breathtaking. When I first saw the lush gardens, picturesque views and dramatic water feature, I fell in love with it.”

As the wedding was to be held in autumn, Monique wanted a long-sleeved, open back dress for the ceremony. “I found the perfect gown on Robyn Roberts' Instagram page. It was the first dress I tried on. I couldn't imagine anything better than that dress!” What can she tell us about the wedding? “I'm still not sure my words will adequately describe the emotions we felt on our special day. Our wedding day was elegant, simple, intimate and a lot of fun. It was everything we ever dreamed of. I definitely had my dream wedding. We had a perfect wedding day and I wouldn't change a thing.” Monique says the highlight of her Big Day was Enrico’s wedding speech. “I was completely surprised by his speech,” she says. “I wasn’t expecting him to be so emotional and to speak such sweet words. Hearing the promises he made to me and the vision he has for us melted my heart.” Standing next to each other as husband and wife made her feel “completely blessed,” she says. “I truly married the man of my dreams.” Monique’s advice for a bride-to-be? “Book your service providers as soon as possible. Don't wait until the last minute to start planning. Also, using a wedding planner/
coordinator can make the whole wedding journey easy and stress free. We wouldn't have been able to do it without our wedding planner. All we had to worry about was enjoying our wedding day and spending time with our guests. One more thing – take the time to enjoy every moment of your wedding day. Mishka & Dominic This celebration of love comprised a moving church ceremony and an intimate celebration with close relatives
REAL WEDDINGS
H
igh school sweethearts Mishka and Dominic tied the knot in springtime during lockdown. As a result, their wedding was a very intimate affair, with a beautiful church ceremony followed by close family enjoying champagne and wedding cake at home. How did Dominic propose? “I was five months pregnant at the time. He took me to the beach where we had had our first date, supposedly to take some pregnancy pictures. As this was during lockdown, I wasn’t really keen on being outdoors. And I certainly didn’t expect that he’d propose!” Mishka waxes lyrical about her wedding day. “It was the first week of spring – the weather was partly cloudy and rather windy. But it’s a day we will treasure in our hearts for a lifetime. It was the most beautiful experience, marrying the person you feel in your heart you are destined to be at the altar with, someone you are ready to spend the rest of your life with, by the grace of God.”

REAL WEDDINGS
“Enjoy every step of the way, because when you look back it should be something you have no regrets doing!” The couple was married at St Margaret’s Parish, an Anglican Church in Fish Hoek. “We chose this venue, because there was no better way to have our marriage officiated than in the house of God. The ceremony was absolutely beautiful!” As they did not have a reception, Mishka and Dominic didn’t have to worry about décor and a theme. “But we ensured that our close relatives who came to our home after attending the ceremony dressed up in a colour scheme of our choice,” Mishka says. The bride says her dress was very different from what anyone expected. “I decided to step out of my comfort zone and try something I would not usually wear. I loved it! It was the perfect decision.” If they could change one thing about their wedding day, what would it be? “Nothing at all,” Mishka says emphatically. “The way it panned out was the way it was destined to be.” The highlight of Mishka’s Big Day? “Finally becoming Dominic’s wife! Standing next to each other as husband and wife felt like home.” Despite Covid-19 restrictions, they managed to enjoy a magical honeymoon in Zanzibar. What advice would Mishka give to a brideto-be? “Embrace the moments you’re in. And remember that it’s about you and your husband-to-be. touch PERFECT
Wedding photographer Unathi Mbonambi is renowned for her magnificent, inspirational images. Here she gives advice on what to take into account when planning your wedding photo portfolio
BRIDAL INSPIRATION
Q: How important is location? A: When shooting the photographs for a wedding, the location is part of the story of the couple’s Big Day, so it’s an important aspect. I’ve documented weddings in all kinds of locations, some obviously more beautiful than others.
I personally prefer to mainly use natural light. My style is very candid; it’s about capturing those seconds of authentic emotion.
Q: What do you consider when choosing a location? A: Because I primarily shoot weddings, I usually don’t get to choose the location. However, I base what the location looks like into how I shoot the pictures. So, I will make the call on how much of the location details to include or frame in the wedding images. I decide whether to focus solely on the couple or incorporate a lot of the location elements, depending on how spectacular the setting is.
Q: What works best for you – natural light and outdoor shots or special lighting indoors? A: Based on my photographic style, I personally prefer to mainly use natural light. My style is very candid; it’s about capturing those seconds of authentic emotion. I find that it’s easier to use available light to document those special moments the instant they occur. However, as a wedding photographer, I’m always shooting in various light conditions, most of which aren’t www.nubianbride.co.za |
55
BRIDAL INSPIRATION
For those ultra-romantic wedding shots that include golden sunlight, you need to take the photographs about an hour before the sun sets or an hour after it has risen.
necessarily offering the best light. So, I often find myself having to use lighting equipment. But even when I do, I try my best to align the lighting to my photographic style. Q: What is important to you when putting a shoot together? A: It’s absolutely vital to work with quality service providers, especially when it comes to a wedding shoot. You see, it’s crucial that all the different elements tell the same story. Q: What is the best time of day for a shoot? A: The whole day is the best time for a wedding shoot! Seriously, it really depends on what you’re photographing, where you’re taking the pictures and what you want the outcome to be. For those ultra-romantic wedding shots that include golden sunlight, you need to take the photographs about an hour before the sun sets or an hour after it has risen. However it does depend on the shoot itself. If you’re photographing a very edgy wedding, for instance, the same lighting might not be ideal. Q: Any tips for the bride-to-be on her wedding photographs? A: My most important advice would be to create a wedding day timeline that takes the photography into account. Many people only consider the day’s activities when they plan the wedding timeline; they forget to consider that the entire day is actually a photo shoot as well. So when the couple plans the timeline, they should incorporate more time into the day’s activities, especially the early part of the day when they are getting ready. For example, it may only take five minutes to get into your dress, but it takes much longer for the photographer to capture this. Remember that. Your photographer will definitely need to spend time to perfectly capture all those special moments – the details of your wedding outfit, the people assisting you to get dressed, the make-up artist, hairdresser, your mother, the bridal party and so on. These are memories that you want captured so that you can cherish them forever. www.umphotography.co.za

DESIGNER STUDIO
Tell us about yourself. I set up my business fresh out of varsity. I was 21. That’s about nine years ago as I’m turning 30 shortly. How did you start your business? I opened my first store in Parkhurst, creating lots of ready-to-wear bridal gowns and evening wear. I was there for about three years, then I opened a store in Hyde Park Shopping Centre. After three years, I needed more space and wanted to give my clients a more exclusive experience, so we moved into our current location in Parktown North. Now we have the space we need to consult with our clients and provide ample fitting rooms. Finally we are able to give our clients the experience they deserve. How did you get into designing wedding dresses? I became aware that there was a huge demand for beautifully made bridal gowns. Brides-to-be shopping at local bridal boutiques weren’t happy with the dresses on offer, particularly the quality of the fabrics and lace, and the style of the dresses. They wanted better quality and more exclusive bridal gowns. We initially created a lot of evening gowns and then we started to get numerous requests for wedding dresses. So that was how we got into designing bridal wear. And from there, the bridal section of the business has just grown and grown. How was your first bridal collection received? I showcased this amazing bridal collection at London Bridal Fashion Week. Everybody loved it. We had a lot of interest from several bridal boutiques in China and quite a few in the UK. One or two French bridal stores also wanted dresses from us. The local bridal boutiques also loved the new collection, which was showcased at SA Fashion Week when I returned from London. It was the first time I showed an entire bridal collection at SA Fashion Week – there were 70 to 80 bridal gowns and people went crazy for them. Describe one of your most memorable wedding designs. I’ve created several memorable bridal gowns, but the one dress that stands out is one we worked on for months. Rochelle had a fashion background before she joined her
family business, so she knew exactly what she wanted. We had the lace and beadwork for her dress custom made. She and I designed the lace together and it featured the dates of the wedding and the couple’s initials – it was absolutely magnificent. The gown weighed about 50kg. The under dress, which was a completely beaded gown, had a 3m train. She could remove a huge section of the train so she could dance at the reception. There was also an overskirt, which was about 10 to 15m long – this was adorned with embroidery, beadwork and crystal work. Rochelle’s wedding was in Venice during the Venice Film Festival – it was a very memorable dress.
Describe how your business has grown from strength to strength. As the years have gone by, we’ve designed matric dance dresses for girls and then gone on to design their wedding dresses. Post hard lockdowns, we are incredibly busy. I started with one employee and now I have 20. We create around 80 to 100 wedding and matric dance dresses each week. When I first started the business, we were happy to sell one in a week! I’ve become known for my fabrics and for creating designs with an impeccable fit, which is why women trust me to make their dress for their Big, Big Day.
“For me, it’s about creating this gorgeous experience that the couple can remember for the rest of their lives”
DESIGNER STUDIO
What have you learned on your journey to success? I’ve learned how to make people feel special. Every bride wants the personal touch that a lot of bridal boutiques don’t necessarily offer. When people come through my door, they know they’re going to deal with me. They will see me for a fitting and I’ll be there to dress them on their wedding day to ensure they look amazing. For me, it’s about creating this gorgeous experience that people can remember for the rest of their lives. How do you help a bride choose a design for her wedding dress? I sit down with the bride and see what ideas she has. Often she has a Pinterest board or photos of dresses. These give me an idea of what she wants. I take her ideas as well as her body shape into consideration and I create a gown that complements all the beautiful curves of her figure, something quite unique.
It’s about creating this gorgeous experience
What’s coming next? Since lockdown restrictions have eased, we have been insanely busy, which I’m so grateful for. Next year, I’m going to start looking at expanding more into the European market. I want to get our wedding dresses stocked in boutiques around the world and to launch the brand across Europe and maybe into America. I want the brand to be everywhere. www.keysfashion.co.za

What advice do you have for a bride-to-be about her Big Day? I would tell her, “Go with the flow, enjoy your beautiful day and don’t sweat the small stuff.” After all, nobody will notice if things don’t go to plan, because the people at the wedding are there for just one reason – to celebrate the bridal couple tying the knot and coming together as one.

An African dream
They say that you arrive at Motswari as a visitor and leave as a friend. This warmth and personalised attention are what sets this luxurious safari lodge apart, making it an exceptional destination for a honeymoon in the bush Having taken visitors on safari adventures for almost 50 years, Motswari Private Game Reserve in the Timbavati-Umbavat area offers an exceptional safari experience. Located within the Greater Kruger National Park, it is easily accessible from Johannesburg, with regular flights to Hoedspruit via Airlink. Motswari, which means ‘Conserve and Protect’ in Tswana, is home to a vast selection of wildlife living within a biodiverse environment. Many of these wild animals are endangered species. In fact, Motswari was initially a rehabilitation centre for the endangered wild dog. These days, wild dog is a growing species in the area. The moment you get there, the magic begins. Game viewing in Motswari is exceptional and guests find the entire experience at Motswari quite unique. Whilst you’re likely to enjoy plenty of luxury, there’s also a welcoming, home-from-home feel. You’ll find shelves filled with books in the intimate lounge areas, cabinets displaying fossils and precious memorabilia from the family that has run the lodge for nearly half a century and quirky hand-crafted items that tell a story of a deep connection to the area and the bush. Not only has the family long been involved in the running of this exceptional game lodge, but some of its staff are third generation. That’s what makes a visit to Motswari such a personal experience. Yes, you feel like you’ve come home at Motswari. There’s a choice of just 15 luxurious bungalows with en suite facilities and traditional African safari décor. All offer every facility and plenty of privacy in the bush. Motswari never hosts more than 30 guests at any given time, so you’re guaranteed personalised service that is taken to extremes in your haven of peace in the midst of the wilds. Every day is filled with activities. Get ready to enjoy early morning and late afternoon game drives, when the animals come out to eat and play, guided bush walks and plenty of time to relax by the lodge swimming pool or in your spectacular private accommodation. Of course, on a safari experience the animals are the highlight, but Motswari also caters for hedonistic delights. Dining is a special African experience, sometimes at the lodge, at other times in the bush. Whether you’re savouring fine fare at the lodge or under the stars in an open air boma or in the bush, you’re in for a treat at breakfast, late lunch, high tea or dinner time. newmarkhotels.com/places/reserves/motswari-private-game-reserve

HAIR A F FA I R Once upon a time, a bride was reluctant to sport her natural hair on her Big Day. But this has changed. We chat to owner and founder of Native Child, Sonto Pooe, who shares her top tips on how to prep your hair for your wedding day
B
usinesswoman Sonto Pooe gave up her career as a quantity surveyor and turned her attention to manufacturing a hair product that nourishes hair and helps it grow. Her reason was simple – she was frustrated that she couldn’t find anything on the market for her own hair. So she created Native Child, a brand made from plant-based ingredients that ticks all the boxes. Below, Sonto offers haircare tips for brides-to-be. What steps should you take in the run-up to your wedding to ensure your hair is in the best possible condition? Ideally, you should give yourself three months before the wedding to get your hair into top condition. Make sure of the following: • Ends must be trimmed or your hair won’t look healthy. If you trim your hair regularly, split ends won’t travel all the way down your hair shaft and your hair will always be in good condition. • Try to avoid using heat to style your hair, especially close to the Big Day. Heat damage is irreversible – remember that. If your hair does get damaged from products using heat, such as hairdryers and hair straighteners, have the damaged ends trimmed so that your hair looks healthy on your Big Day.
• Make sure to condition your hair to improve its texture and general health. Native Child has a special deep conditioner for this specific purpose. • You can improve your hair’s density and thickness if you look after it well for at least three months before your wedding.
