Complete with 16 pages, including the cover, it features her three weddings this year (two traditional, one a white wedding) to Sifiso Mazibuko. This is a fitting grand entrance for someone as gifted as Precious, as it not only shows her talents as a wedding planner, but also explains exactly why she has garnered so much acclaim. Precious gathered the very best professionals in the wedding business to work together instead of as competitors to create a white wedding that dreams are made of, an event that not only showcased their exceptional talents, but also surpassed the bride’s expectations. Take a look on pages 114 onwards. This issue is full of fabulous talents, including fashion designer David Tlale, who we interviewed in the Designer Studio section on page 60; flower specialist extraordinaire, Sylvia Bössinger, who is the star in our Planning feature on page 109; and a number of exceptional cake experts who designed mouth-watering wedding cakes for our feature on page 155, including Teddy from Just Teddy, originally a finalist on the TV show The Great South African Bake Off. Planning a honeymoon filled with sun, sea and sand doesn’t need to be a tough decision; there are many destinations around the world that are sunny yearround. In our Honeymoon section on page 130 we feature some of the best – take a look. We’ve also put together a

comprehensive and inspirational feature on wedding venues to give you some ideas of where to book your perfect wedding on page 130. And let’s not forget our exceptionally beautiful Real Weddings, from page 32 onwards, which feature a number of couples who have tied the knot and how they made their Big Day a memorable event. This issue gives you all the info on the latest wedding trends for 2019 and 2020 as well as great ideas to help you plan a modern wedding in the 21st century. Registry experts at Yuppiechef give advice on modern items to put on your registry on page 173, and our Back Page (page 176) features details about traditional customs. A highlight of every issue of Nubian Bride is the fashion and beauty pages – and this issue is no exception. Take a look at what we have put together starting on page 64 – an exceptional shoot photographed at The Maslow in Sandton. You can engage with us online or email us for any assistance you may require about anything bridal by mailing us on info@nubianbride.co.za. TRENDS
WHAT’S NEW IN 2020
You don’t have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to your wedding, but why not include some of the latest trends to keep it modern? Most importantly, make your Big Day all about you. Here’s some idea of what will be popular in 2020…
MORE IS MORE – STACKED RINGS A major trend is a short stack of rings – from thin gold bands to more elaborate ones. Try to stack at least three, though you can go all out with as many as you’re comfortable with. Start with just a wedding and an engagement band and then add to this over the years as you celebrate important milestones.
POPULAR DATES FOR A 2020 WEDDING
Picture Unsplash, courtesy images
If you’re getting married in 2020, there are certain dates that stand out from the crowd. Getting married on the 20th of any month in 2020 gives you a really great sounding wedding date, for example Jan 20, 2020, or June 20, 2020.
CINDERELLA MOMENTS
UP IN THE SKY It’s become de rigueur for photographers to include drone photography in their repertoire for weddings and other important events. What makes it so special? Aerial shots offer a unique perspective, and one can be extremely creative photographing from above. When you book your photographer, why not ask if he or she includes this as part of the package? It’s certainly original!
Sorbet Group recently opened a whole new concept in Hyde Park Shopping – Sorbet SK-N, an upmarket beauty spa offering stateof-the-art skin treatments in a future-forward space. Ideal for tired, ageing or damaged skin, it’s the perfect spot to transform yourself before your wedding, with a choice of advanced cosmetic treatments that offer rapid and significant results. TRENDS GOING GREEN ON YOUR WEDDING DAY Everybody’s doing their utmost to be environmentally friendly these days, including at major events like weddings. So, if you’re planning to host a responsible wedding, remember – this involves cutting back on unnecessary waste and trying to be as eco-friendly as possible. Many venues are becoming more sustainable, offering inhouse catering using locally sourced produce. Are there other ways you can pledge a commitment to going green? Take a look: • Give your wedding flowers to a good cause. • Go plastic-free on the Big Day. • Choose clothing, jewellery and accessories that were previously worn and give them a second life. • Ensure that your wedding venue recycles. • Create eco wedding invitations using recycled cardboard/paper and eco-friendly print methods – or use email instead.
MAKE IT ZEN FOR THE HENS! These days, hen parties are less about having too many shots and more about spending time together with your besties enjoying something related to wellness and beauty. Yes, spa days are all the rage – and why not? You get to be pampered, there’s still plenty of booze if you want it, and, at the end of the day, you leave looking and feeling fabulous. Revive Wellness Spa in Highlands North, Johannesburg offers a fabulous spa day for those in the know that includes a wide selection of beauty and wellness treatments plus manis, pedis, having your hair done, a flotation tank, swimming pool, café… you name it. It’s our favourite go-to spot forgetting away from it all. www.revivewellnessspasa.co.za
WEDDING GOWNS DO DOUBLE DUTY Two gowns or one? That is the question! And it’s being made simpler by savvy fashion designers who are creating a double-duty wedding dress that looks magnificent as you walk down the aisle and then is transformed into a second, simpler, often shorter dress that makes it easy to dance the night away at your reception. Removable sleeves, detachable skirts and other brilliant design elements offer you two dresses without having to change your outfit completely. Add a pair of low heels for dancing, touch up your lipstick and you’re ready to party!
RETHINKING ENGAGEMENT RINGS A beautiful solitaire is a classic engagement statement, but these days, no rules apply. More and more couples are choosing to be bolder and more individual with different stones and ring designs. Some couples even prefer choosing identical rings so that they can show their commitment to each other – or perhaps giving women the opportunity to propose? The size of the diamond is now not as important as it used to be – being individual is just as significant. Some couples are choosing not to match engagement rings and wedding bands. It’s all up to you!

outh African born and raised in Namibia, Mauritz Slabbert was inspired by the local Himba tribe from a young age. “I loved how fashionforward they were and the creative ways in which they used patchwork techniques with any scraps of material they could find in the Namib Desert, far away from civilisation and shops.” “To this day, they don’t have the luxury of buying lots of fabric, so they come up with innovative and very creative ways to put together their own traditional dresses. Interestingly enough, the original Himba tribe used to make army uniforms during colonial times in Namibia, using their ideas to create unique and striking items.”

emra and Teddy met in Atlanta in the United States through mutual friends. He subsequently proposed to her on a trip to Paris that they’d arranged to celebrate her birthday. The couple was married in a church ceremony in Houston, Texas. A month later, they held a reception at the One&Only The Palm in Dubai. “Since our wedding was a destination wedding, we did not have a large party,” Semra explains. “The venue is ideal if you have less than 100 guests. We also loved that it was at an upscale beachfront resort with a beautiful courtyard for the dinner reception.” When planning the reception, Semra wanted have a sophisticated, glamorous feel. “The theme was ‘A night under the Arabian sky’. I wanted white flowers and white tablecloths with the only colour stemming from the hue of candlelight… a classy and clean look.”

“I wanted it to have a sophisticated, glamorous feel. The theme was ‘A night under the Arabian sky"
What about her wedding gown? “I love the designer, Lorenzo Rossi, who creates unique and glamorous wedding dresses. My dress had a beige tint, which I thought was perfect for a wedding in the desert. Unfortunately, most Lorenzo Rossi stores are in Europe, so I had to buy my dress online. However, Clara, who did the alterations in Atlanta for me, ensured that everything fitted perfectly – as if I had tried it on and bought it at the store.” The couple included Ethiopian traditions in their wedding. “We had an Ethiopian Orthodox Priest bless the event before the start of the reception,” Semra explains. “At the end of the wedding, about five or six older relatives and family friends were seated in a row right outside the reception hall. It’s customary for the bride and groom to bow and kiss their elders and receive blessings from them before leaving the event. Including this Ethiopian custom at the end of the wedding reception was very meaningful to us.” What would Semra have done differently if she could do it all over again? “I would have started hair and make-up earlier in the day to have enough time for pictures before the reception,” she admits. “I would have taken more one-on-one pictures with family and other guests too, so that we had more personal memories with everyone.” For Semra, the highlight of the couple’s Big Day was “seeing our families having a great time and celebrating the day with us. Oh, the cake was magical too, so we loved cutting and eating it!” Standing together for the first time as husband and wife was another highlight of the wedding. “We felt like grownups,” Semra laughs. Following the wedding, Semra and Teddy honeymooned in Ethiopia

“It was obvious that I’m his joy and that he is my paradise”
J
oy Paradise met at their local church. Their relationship blossomed from there and it was inevitable when Paradise eventually proposed. “When he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, it was a dream come true,” says Joy, recalling the day he proposed 20years ago. For Joy, their wedding day was not just an opportunity to declare their love for each other. “It was a day meant for sharing the love we have for each other and to rekindle the love that other couples, who were attending, have for each other as well,” she says. She describes the day as “an elegant and beautiful event” and says that “time just flew by during the wedding.” Joy describes her wedding as “one of a kind”. She says, “I still smile with joy every time I think of my wedding day.” Her favourite moment? “Actually, there were two favourites for me. Firstly, at the matrimonial service when I was walking down the aisle and then when we exchanged our vows.”
“It was obvious that I’m his joy and that he is my paradise. Everything pointed to this, from the way in which the rings were delivered by the drone to the three programme directors, music performed at the matrimonial service and reception, and the moving speech from our son that exceeded all our expectations.” Standing next to each other as husband and wife was “an incredible feeling, I felt complete and happy,” she admits. The couple started their honeymoon with a luxury trip on the Blue Train travelling from Pretoria to Cape Town, where they spent three days. They then flew back to Johannesburg and travelled through Mpumlalanga to the Kruger National Park and onto Phalaborwa Gate for a stunning safari experience. What advice would you give to a bride-tobe? “Just enjoy the day of your wedding and embrace it with love.” Photography Licalo Photography | www.licalo.com Wedding coordinator Confidence Adams, Yawee Events | yawegt@yahoo.com, 083 996 9234 Wedding gown Maggie Soterro, Olivelli Bridal Boutique Northcliff | www.olivelli.co.za Flowers Shidila Deco Delight | info@shidilalodge.co.za, 083 770 7252 Cake Judith Mariri, Judy’s Cakes | www.judyscakes.co.za Stationery Trendy Settings | www.paperworks.co.za Bridesmaids’ dresses House of Dominique | www.facebook.com/houseofdominique/ DJ Joe Mohale | 082 4762 867 Music Friends Ltd | 078 669 5877 Make-up artist Adelle Jung | 083 388 4490 Videographer Jannie Cilliers DVD Productions | 082 449 2912 For more pictures visit www.nubianbride.co.za

Seboifeng&Dennis A picture-perfect wedding in Polokwane that this couple will look back on for years to come
REAL WEDDINGS
“We wanted something simple, dramatic and elegant."
S
eboifeng and Dennis recognised each other on their first day at university as they had mutual acquaintances. They greeted each other, became friends and their relationship progressed from there. Dennis was very conventional, Seboifeng says. “He first asked my parents for my hand in marriage and also spoke to his parents. He then proposed to me on my birthday at one of my favourite restaurants, the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff. When he’d paid lobola, he officially proposed to me at church the following day.” The couple married in their hometown of Polokwane at The Potter’s House Christian Church. Seboifeng says that their wedding day was “nothing short of heavenly, classy, timeless and great fun! Together with family and friends, we’ll always remember this memorable day.” When it came to a theme and décor for the wedding, Seboifeng says, “We wanted something simple, dramatic and elegant. We didn’t have anything specific in mind – we just wanted something that would be relevant, something stunning to look back on in our photo album years from now.”

“Most importantly, enjoy your special day to the fullest!" Where did Seboifeng buy her wedding dress? “Dennis and our parents wanted me to have the best wedding dress possible, so we chose Delavida Bridal Couture. I went there, tried on one dress and it was love at first sight!” If they could change one thing about their wedding day, what would it be? “Our wedding day was the best day of our lives,” Seboifeng says. “I wouldn’t change a thing, except perhaps to ensure I got enough sleep and enough breakfast that morning! And, as far as Dennis was concerned, the whole day was absolute perfection!” The highlight of the day was undoubtedly when the couple were pronounced man and wife. “Being blessed and officiated by both our dads was really special! Standing together as husband and wife, we were both so excited – to finally be together forever is the best thing ever.” The couple had a glorious honeymoon, visiting Paris, Venice, Rome, Capri and Dubai. “It was simply amazing!” Seboifeng says. What advice would she give to a bride-tobe? “Don’t take time for granted. The day goes by really fast! And start planning to meet with service providers as soon as possible – it’s never too early. hembakazi and Benjamin met while studying at Tshwane University of Technology in 2004. “The proposal was not fancy or like a fairy tale – I didn’t find the ring at the bottom of a champagne glass while on a romantic weekend away. But, for me, it was real and special,” Thembakazi says. “Benjamin went down on one knee in front of my whole family the day he finished paying lobola.” The couple married at The Moon and Sixpence in Muldersdrift. “We fell in love with the beautiful, intimate chapel and the reception area. Both were perfect and fitted all 80 guests. I love capturing moments, and the venue was so picturesque.” Thembakazi says they didn’t have a theme. “We just wanted simple, clean, pretty décor,” she says. And when it came to the dress, “There were two, actually. I wanted one for the chapel and another for the reception, and I wanted to look breathtakingly beautiful. This made my first dress fittings a bit difficult as I didn’t have a design in mind. Then, when I fitted both gowns at Eurobride in Bryanston, I knew they were perfect. The

I loved both my wedding dresses.” The wedding day, says Thembakazi, was “as we wanted it to be: simple, beautiful, blessed, dreamy, intimate and perfect! The simplicity even reflected in the décor we chose (clean, classy and romantic – nothing blingy). We wanted the day to be a happy day and we wanted our guests to enjoy it. It’s difficult to say what was a highlight of their Big Day, she says. “The whole day was made up of many special moments. But, if I were to choose one highlight, it would be walking down the aisle. Walking through the chapel doors to our son, Milani playing ‘Here Comes the Bride’ on the piano was a magical moment. I got so emotional, I started panicking and crying, and I kept on tripping on my wedding gown.” Standing next to each other as husband and wife “felt so natural and right,” she adds. “Though I wish hubby had cried when I walked into the chapel!” Advice for a bride-to-be? “Don’t get so caught up in the planning, worrying about the day’s proceedings and trying to please everyone. If you do, you’ll forget to enjoy your wedding day. Stressing is okay, but it’s also okay not to stress, especially on your Big Day. You only get married once, after all, so have fun!” Photography Paula Adams Photography | www.adamsphoto.co.za Videography Big Day Symphony Wedding Films | www.bigdaysymphonyfilms.co.za Wedding coordinator Talitha at The Moon and Sixpence | www.moonandsixpence.co.za Venue The Moon and Sixpence | www.moonandsixpence.co.za Wedding gowns Eurobride, Bryanston | www.eurobride.co.za Bride & bridesmaids’ dressing robes Robe Room South Africa | www.roberoom.co.za Hair Tlholo of Mabu Tribe | www.mabutribe.co.za Make-up Lungile Thabethe | @LungileThabetheBeauty Groom’s suit SmartGuy, Centurion | www.smartguy.co.za Flowers Exquisite Flowers & Décor Hire | www.exquisiteflowers.co.za Cake Aux Petit Four | www.auxpetitfour.co.za Stationery Say It Creative | www.sayitcreative.co.za For more pictures visit www.nubianbride.co.za www.nubianbride.co.za |

Azola&Zachary This beautiful couple’s spectacular and unique wedding included a flying bridal veil!
REAL WEDDINGS
T
he couple met 13 years ago at a school social. “We were introduced by a mutual friend,” remembers Azola. Zachary came to the UK to celebrate Azola’s graduation from the University of London and decided it was the perfect time to propose. Two days after Azola graduated, he told her they were going to an important function hosted by his mother and that there was a specific dress code. “Little did I know at the time that this was all a farce,” Azola laughs. “In fact, he had created an animated video of the key moments of our lives together that culminated in his animated character proposing to my animated character, both of which were wearing the exact same outfits as we were. Zach set up a projector and had a chef prepare us a meal in the garden. After I said yes, we had lunch and then celebrated with family and friends. Then he took me to

“It was the happiest and best day of our lives!” watch our favourite play, The Lion King, at the Lyceum Theatre, where they’d arranged champagne and a special backstage tour for the newly engaged couple. This day was topped only by our wedding!” Azola and Zachary got married at La Paris Estate in Franschhoek. “We were lucky that it could accommodate the size of our wedding as we’d invited 300 people,” Azola explains. She describes their Big Day as absolutely amazing. “It was the happiest and best day of our lives! The setting was beautiful and the joy and love our guests brought was tangible,” she says. Azola and Zachary chose to get married on Spring Day, the 1st of September, and this became the theme for the wedding. “However, we wanted the look, feel and experience to be a physical manifestation of our love for one another,” Azola explains. “Zach always wanted to have a fun wedding with a memorable and unique ceremony – and this was very much part of the day.” The stunning wedding dress was the first dress the bride-to-be tried on. “I instantly fell in love with it,” she says. “What made me say ‘yes to the dress’ was that it even had pockets. It is just timeless. I still love it!” www.nubianbride.co.za |

“We later found out that this was the first time a flying veil had been done on the continent
REAL WEDDINGS
The highlight of the wedding day was “walking down the aisle and hearing one another’s vows, which made us want to cry tears of joy.” Azola also loved her flying veil, which she says “made the day into a magical Disney moment!” This feat involved some engineering by the planners and resulted in the veil flying through the air and gracefully landing on Azola’s head. “We later found out that this was the first time anything like this had been done on the continent, which is pretty cool,” she admits. Finally standing next to each other as husband and wife “felt surreal,” Azola admits. “It still feels magical. The best decision we made was marrying one another!” She says they wouldn’t change a thing about the event. “Everything was perfect, but we wished we could have had more time with our guests.” Azola and Zachary plan to have a separate traditional ceremony in the future – and they have yet to go on honeymoon. “However, we went on a ‘minimoon’ to do the Namaqualand trail, which is beautiful in the first few weeks of spring,” she says. When it comes to advice for a bride-to-be, Azola has this to say, “Plan ahead! Don’t let a million people have a view on your wedding. It’s yours. Once the stressful part is over, focus on enjoying the fact that you are going to be married to somebody you love with all your heart!” Photography Daniel West Photography | http://danielwest.photo Wedding coordinator Yes! Nithal&Tasarnia A stunning wedding for a modern couple in the limelight
REAL WEDDINGS
N
ithal and Tasarnia met in Johannesburg when Nithal was starting his first day at Topshop as a product specialist and Tasarnia was starting her internship. The couple connected right away and, after being friends for a while, they started dating on Valentine’s Day in 2018. Since then, their relationship has grown in leaps and bounds. In keeping with being a modern couple and because they were still finding their feet financially, there was no proposal – the couple made the decision to get married together. Theirs is a rare and unique love story, one that restores faith in the belief that ‘a perfect match’ does exist. The couple has pushed boundaries and definitely did not conform, but these two people are so alike, they share the same dreams and chase the same goals. Their decision to tie the knot is testimony to their commitment to each other, the fun they have together and their desire to show their continued support and love towards each other.

“It felt like this was the beginning of the best chapter of our lives
REAL WEDDINGS
“Standing next to each other as husband and wife felt right” They describe their wedding day as “an elegant, intimate day, shared with our closest friends and family.” Yes, it was a perfect day, but they wish they had had more time to spend with their guests and also to take in the moment a little more. Tasarnia says the highlight of her day was “listening to my sister sing me down the aisle.” Standing next to each other finally as husband and wife “felt right. It felt like this was the beginning of the best chapter of our lives.” Advice for a bride-to-be? “Get a wedding planner if you don’t want to fuss over the minute details of planning a wedding,” says Tasarnia. “If you’re that way inclined, a planner is a godsend in the run-up to the Big Day and guarantees you a completely stress-free experience on the day. I don’t think I would have been as pleased with the outcome of my wedding without my wedding planner.” The couple followed their dream wedding with a romantic honeymoon in Nusa Dua, Bali. DESIGNER STUDIO
THE DAVID TLALE EXPERIENCE
The world of top fashion designer David Tlale is a busy, exciting one, filled with glamour and magnificent creative projects that depict Africa in all its beauty. Here he talks about his inspiration behind designing exclusive wedding gowns
60
| www.nubianbride.co.za
DESIGNER STUDIO
Tell us a little about yourself. I am a creative – in every aspect of what I do, I represent black excellence in South Africa and Africa. With a fashion brand that is celebrating 18 years in the industry, I believe that the opportunities for African fashion creatives are endless. The one thing I value in others and myself is attention to detail. I will always be a consummate professional. Work and play are easily distinguishable when you enter my design studio. The fashion world has been buzzing over your Vosloorus Show. What is the message behind it? The message behind #TlaleVosloo2NewYork was to give back to the community that I come from. There is so much talent within this community and I wanted to be the conduit for a journey of success. You can come from anywhere and be successful. You write your story for the world and the possibilities are endless. What is the secret to your success? My faith has anchored the brand and myself. I believe that without spiritual guidance we would not have had the successes that we have had thus far. What motivates you? Everything around me motivates me, from the scenery and the art scene to the people of Africa. From vibrant Lagos in Nigeria to the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg. The lively colours, the different languages... all of this inspires me and makes me proud to be born in Africa and to be South African especially. Tell us about your team. I am really blessed and thankful that I have a team of this magnitude on my side. I can confidently say that I have the best team in the business – everyone pulls their weight and ensures that my dream comes alive. What advice do you have for someone about to choose her wedding gown? Make sure that you have the dress of your dreams. Don’t settle for basic design, don’t settle for less. Make sure you go all out - this is a milestone that you’ll always look back on.

You can come from anywhere and be successful. You write your story for the world and the possibilities are endless
What are your future plans? I am currently working on an exciting showcase that will be taking place in New York. Showing in New York is always exciting because it’s an opportunity for us to share our African expression to the world – in ways that speak to the global narrative. Some amazing collaborations are on their way with TASTIC Rice, which I am looking forward to. AFI Johannesburg Fashion Week is also coming up… When people ask me if I ever rest, I cshow them my calendar, because everything is work, work and more work! Advice for a bride-to-be about her wedding? Get assistance with regards to your bridal party and all of the wedding’s logistical elements. The less stress that you have, the better. This will also ensure that you and your partner can focus on making the moment one to remember. www.davidtlale.com
What sort of bride would wear your designs? A bride who wants a one-of-a-kind creation that will stand the test of time and design. I have dressed so many notable names and the one thing that I always have in mind, that I always have to deliver on, is elegance and sophistication. That is the David Tlale experience.
What advice would you give local bridesto-be about choosing a dress? South African brides need to be more adventurous and not be afraid of fashion and making a statement on their wedding day.
Are there any bridal gowns that you’re particularly proud of? I honestly can’t choose one. They all mean something to me and all of the moments that they captured are dear to me.
What is the most challenging part of designing a dress? I love the process of creating couture and bridal gowns. To me, the more challenging, the better. The dresses are usually the easiest part, whilst the women who will wear them are the biggest challenge.
What’s the first thing you consider when you design a bridal gown? The bride’s personality is very important. I also pay close attention to her best features. Creating a vision that will leave an impactful impression should be the most important thing.
What are your trend predictions for 2020? The House of David Tlale is all about excess and ostrich feathers. Skirts over pants is a major trend. Pleats and attention to trimming details is key. Cruise features, lace and fruity suiting are of the essence. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Fragrances for bridesmaids The new women’s fragrance for Gucci, Mémoire d’une Odeur, was created by Alessandro Michele and blended by master perfumer Alberto Morillas. It’s a hybrid scent resembling a memory, she says. This elixir transcends gender by its individuality and establishes a new modern fragrance family called Mineral Aromatic, which is a mix of scents and emotions: airy, musky, transparent and authentic. It includes Roman chamomile, which has grown around Rome since the 16th and 17th centuries. It is structured with the powerful scent of Indian Coral Jasmine petals for tenderness, precious musk for depth and noble woods including warm, luminous sandalwood and airy, subtle cedarwood that boasts an irresistible vanilla note. It is housed in a vintage Gucci fragrance bottle from the early 1990s. www.nubianbride.co.za |

ylvia Bösinger started Yes!exclusive weddings and events and later Yes!exclusive flowers with her daughter Elfi almost 10 years ago - and their companies have gone from strength to strength because of their inimitable passion, innovation and creativity. “I’m actually a jewellery designer by trade,” says Sylvia. “I ran my own company for 10 years and then was an International Sales Director for a medical IT company. I bought an old church in Germany and transformed it into a boutique wedding venue. After that we opened an office in Dubai for events in the Middle East, as Elfi, holding a Masters degree in international business management, was working for the well-known Jumeirah hospitality group in Dubai, even before she started studying. She gained a vast amount of knowledge there in luxury hospitality. Dubai opened her eyes when it came to service, which helped us in our two businesses, where service plays a key role. Everyone can sell a product but not everyone is be able to offer appropriate service. We teach our team that this is a priority.” Around 4 years ago, Karen Tran, one of the top 3 floral designers in the world asked Yes!exclusive Weddings and Events to host her first African floral masterclass in Cape Town. “We agreed – not knowing what it would all entail, but it was a project we just couldn’t say no to. It was honestly the biggest disaster by far, as the South African flower industry wasn’t ready in many ways for such an event and we spent a fortune of our own money to pull it off. But today we can say it turned out as a huge success. We were featured in the gala night of this event on Top Billing on television – this was an opportunity to show what’s possible when you think outside the box and we received a lot of calls from local florists after it was aired, asking where they could get quality flowers like the ones we used for that event. As there was such a huge demand in the following weeks, we decided to import fine flowers into South Africa and began with amazing scented garden roses from a farm in Kenya. Today we are still sole agent for these beautiful blooms and Yes! Exclusive Flowers was born.” Yes! exclusive flowers was launched in 2016 when the company started importing flowers. Since 2018 we also export flowers from all over the world into South Africa and the African continent. “We offer high quality flowers in wonderful colours and shapes,
some even with an amazing scent. This was completely unique at the time and we continued this journey to become known as Africa’s Number One for fine flowers,” Sylvia says. “We import flowers that sometimes have never even been seen in the country before. Sourcing these flowers for our clients is extremely rewarding and we are very proud to see what wonderful designs are created with them.” Yes!Exclusive Weddings and Events does numerous events both locally, for instance in the Garden Route or the Winelands, as well as destination weddings around the world. We’ve done some amazing weddings in very different locations… from the desert in Dubai to an ice chapel at the polar circle in Lapland.” Besides weddings, the company also hosts and co-hosts high profile international events, like the first luxury networking conference in South Africa – “Inspire! Capetown” in 2015. It also partnered with the American Coterie Retreat in 2017 for their luxurious back-tothe-roots event in Johannesburg, where well- known event guru Preston Baily was the VIP guest. “We believe in being the driving force of creating events with a different perspective,” Sylvia explains. “Being pioneers in our industry inspires us to walk off the beaten track and change the industry in a way that benefits all of us – our clients as well as colleagues.” Note: copy not necessary as this is a bridal mag. “Our clients say that Yes! Exclusive Flowers has revolutionised the South African flower
“We import flowers that sometimes have never even been seen in the country before" market by creating a unique sales concept, selling fresh flowers directly from the farms around the world to wholesalers as well as florists via our online shop. We source our flowers directly from Kenya, Europe and South America and deliver them to the African wholesale and retail market. Our web shop has photographs of each product, so that the florists can even show their clients what is on offer. However, ordering is only possible with a special login by the florists. “We not only import fresh flowers, since the new trends of nude colours and different textures has prevailed; we also bring in large varieties of natural preserved and dried, dyed flowers, like pampas. We work exclusively with all the flowers from Yes! Exclusive Flowers on our own events, showcasing the different varieties, amazing shapes and www.nubianbride.co.za |

“Budget for everything you’ll need for your big day. This way you won’t be short of cash” colours to our clients – this is a huge benefit to them when they choose to work with us. Every florist, venue or event planner can purchase our flowers online for their clients, and their clients can even select from the pictures in our weshop.” Sylvia believes that it’s vital that people know about the availability of flowers and the best time to order specific sorts. “We find people often ask for peonies, which are only in season here in the country for a short time in October and the beginning of November. However, they are available all year around through us as they are in season in different times in different parts of the world. But importing these amazing blooms can be expensive at certain times of the year. To inform our clients about this and show them the new varieties, colours and shapes available, we host special floral breakfasts. We just recently returned from such a four-city roadshow, where we introduced our beauties to old and new customers. We believe such educational events are important to give the florists ideas on what to recommend to their clients, the most suitable solution for their

event and to make their wedding unique and most memorable.”. It is extremely important to create an atmosphere at an event and for your photographer to capture a certain mood of the wedding. “We recommend ensuring a couple keeps at least a fifth - or rather 30 percent – of their budget for flowers. Discuss this budget with your wedding planner or florist and see if it’s workable. Be realistic and open to recommendations. Perhaps instead of peonies, which can be quite pricy, one can use roses that look exactly like a peony, e.g. peony pink roses, but those are more reasonable and won’t break the budget. “Florists often place their orders with us very late, sometimes only a week before the wedding, as they wait for clients to pay them. They need to plan better and make the right decision at the right time for the best flowers with the best price, so it’s essential to get payments well in advance,” Sylvia explains. “Often we see that flowers are ordered at very short notice and are thus more expensive. The clients either have to pay more or get less if no more funds are available.”
A wedding should ideally be planned a year in advance, Sylvia says. “Everything should be paid in full at the latest four weeks before the Big Day. Then nobody is stressed, especially not the bride. Advanced planning makes things much cheaper too. Yes! exclusive Weddings and Events can pull off a smaller wedding in a couple of weeks, but we definitely need much more time for a bigger event.” Sylvia emphasises the importance of involving a wedding planner. “Having a person who is paid to plan your wedding for you takes a lot of stress away. The planner has connections to suppliers and a team to work with, so he or she can handle the entire event. However, if your budget is too small, ask the planner to be involved in part of the planning, or maybe just run the day of the event. This is not my recommendation, but it’s better than nothing.” One of the reasons to have experts involved in the planning is that they know instinctively about certain things that clients are not aware of. “It is their job to know this and also to understand the practicality and organisational aspects, things they have covered at dozens of weddings. Whilst for a couple it is, in most cases, the first time they have to deal with a huge list like this, from accommodation to sound and lighting. At one of our recent weddings, the couple chose a venue with an outdoor ceremony area beside a pre-drink area outside, expecting good weather. But that time of the year is well-known for rain, so we had to prepare for that by erecting two large marquees, which were not part of the initial budget.” Sylvia also advises against spending on expensive items like a beautiful but pricy dress right at the beginning of the planning process. “Budget for everything you’ll need for your big day. This way you won’t be short of cash.” Extraordinary weddings are part and parcel of the planning process. “One wedding we planned had 18,000 flowers,” Sylvia remembers. “Another unique wedding involved the bride having a flying veil, which flew along the entire aisle towards the bride and then rested on her head – it was a first for such a production in Africa! “A planner can definitely help you personalise your wedding in a creative way. Whether your budget is R50,000 or R50 million, it should mirror your personality and not be spent to impress others.”

PRECIOUS THE PLANNER
In March 2019, Precious the Planner (P) tied the knot with Sifiso Mazibuko (S) in a traditional Sepedi wedding at her home in Limpopo. Then, on 14 September, the couple exchanged their vows, in a romantic white wedding at Thaba Eco Hotel in Johannesburg. The following day, they enjoyed their third and final wedding ceremony, a traditional Zulu wedding, in Soweto. This is their love story‌

Here’s how it all began, and how Precious planned her weddings
“T
he beginning of the story is really when Sifiso proposed in May 2018,” says Precious with a smile. “After that, we had to go through our families’ traditional requirements – the meeting of the families, the lobola and everything else involved. Once the two families had met, we decided on the dates of the weddings.” As a planner herself, Precious started by working everything backwards from the dates of the weddings. The planning, she says, took just over a year. “What I’ve learned from experience is to work with people I trust and people who know my expectations - so this is what I did.” “The best part of it all was that I was able to secure the best in the wedding industry to
collaborate with and work on my wedding for me. Normally they are competitors, but, in this case, they worked together to make the wedding amazing and they pushed their boundaries. I really respect them for that.” As the supplier of her flowers, Mabel Maposa of Mabel M Florals had this to say: “Precious is a very special person. She lives the wedding industry, and she loves the industry. Her experience is vast. We were all under pressure to wow her. I have never, ever seen so much thought and detail put into a wedding. All of us service providers are like a big family and we all pulled together.” Precious said that the inspiration for her wedding was her magnificent engagement ring. “It inspired everything. It is unique. I’m a

PRECIOUS THE PLANNER rose gold girl and I love beautiful things, and I wanted my ring to be exactly that. In January this year, Sifiso invited me to what I thought was a meeting but it turned out to be an opportunity for me to choose the stone and the design of my ring. “Everybody thought I’d go for a pink stone, but then this one stone caught my eye. It was a sky blue topaz. I chose a romantic vintage design for the ring, with rose gold, the exquisite blue topaz and diamonds. Apparently the topaz represents eternal romance and friendship.” Precious worked on the planning right up until a month before the wedding. Then she handed over the reins of wedding director to ex-business partner and good friend, Kim Currin. “I was a bridesmaid at her wedding, but I needed her to be more than just a bridesmaid for me. I needed someone I could trust, and she agreed to take over for me. Two weeks before the wedding, she sat me down so that I could brief her properly. ‘I need to get in your head,’ she said. ‘I need to know what you expect, what you want me to see, what you want me to do in particular situations.’ I thought she was crazy. That brief took four hours…” The results, says Precious, exceeded her expectations. “In my head I had a vision and a picture of the ceremony. But the results were incredible.” According to Mabel: “She walked into the reception and burst into tears. I froze; I wasn’t sure if she loved it or not. Then I realised how happy she was. She said it was like looking into a mirror of what she’d done if she could have done it herself.”
Advice on planning the perfect wedding
Do it together: “Before you and your fiancé tell anyone what your vision is, sit down, just the two of you, and share ideas. Tell your man what you’ve always dreamed of. Decide on the wedding together. The outcome of two people’s ideas is very different; it’s not just one-sided. I enjoyed planning with Sifiso.” “I always tell clients that the couple needs to go to the first few meetings together. It’s important to get input from your partner. I took Sifiso to all the mock-ups. He felt very much a part of the planning.” Book your venue first: “This is very important. Choose the space where you want to create your vision. The rest will follow. In fact, my dress was the last bit of planning for me.” www.nubianbride.co.za |

Precious and Sifiso had two traditional weddings – a Sepedi wedding on 30 March 2019 and a Zulu wedding, Umembeso, on 15 September, the day after their white wedding

T
he Sepedi wedding in March was a major celebration, with about 600 guests. At this wedding, Precious’ family hosted Sifiso’s, who came to their Limpopo home to finish the lobola negotiations. “This was the families’ final discussion,” Precious explains. “Afterwards, we celebrated with the traditional Sepedi wedding.” Precious planned the entire event. “I decided to give it a modern twist,” she explains. “I love flowers, so we had an explosion of flowers, and a marquee in front of the house I grew up in. There were festivities of note.” Precious admits that it all went by so fast and she doesn’t remember a thing. “I always tell my brides to ‘take it all in’ but it went by so fast. We had so much fun,” she says. Precious had two different outfit changes. “The first was a Sepedi outfit, and then I changed into something more modern, but authentic,” she explains. The food

was traditional and the experience was completely authentic. But I added a modern touch, so not all the décor elements were traditional.” Hosting her new family at this celebration meant a lot to Precious. “It was about showing the Sepedi traditions and showing them how the daughter of the family was raised.” The second traditional wedding took place at Sifiso’s family’s home in Soweto a day after Sifiso and Precious had their white wedding. “I was now a Zulu bride,” Precious explains. “I had to arrive in my bridal gown from the previous day. We were late, as we’d been at our wedding reception with our guests till 4am. As a result, they wouldn’t open the gates until we paid a fine. We brought a selection of gifts with us, from a list Sifiso’s family had put together. My family and I were welcomed and we presented the gifts.” “The elders from his side of the family then changed me into an outfit suitable for a Zulu bride, and gave me the family rules, which explained how to behave as a Zulu wife.” Precious says the Zulu wedding was not as formal as her Sepedi wedding had been. “It’s literally just a celebration – eating and partying with lots of food,” she explains.

P
recious wanted her wedding to be “a bush fairy-tale romance”, which is why she chose Thaba Eco Hotel as the location. “I’ve planned so many weddings there,” she says, “because it ticks all the boxes. It’s not too far from Johannesburg and has great amenities and a stunning setting.” For her wedding, Precious wanted to have a ceremony in the bush, and to add an element of surprise, she arranged that the 200 guests would be shuttled to the ceremony. “I wanted it to be authentic, to remind me of home when I lived in a bush village as a girl,” she explains. “But I also wanted to ensure that it had that element of luxury that I’m known for. The result was a beautiful set-up in the bush that wasn’t too rustic. The only thing we worried about was the weather, but it held up.” As a professional planner, Precious was involved in planning most of the wedding, but she handed over the reins to her chosen stockists and her friend, Kim Currin, acted as Wedding Director. “It was the time to be a bride,” she says, “so the Thursday before the wedding, which was held on a Saturday, I stopped working and taking calls. I also didn’t see the venue when it was completely set up.”

And when she did see the final result, she was blown away. “It was just beyond anything I would ever have imagined. It still makes me emotional to think about it,” she says with tears in her eyes. The couple each had five people in their wedding party. “Mine included my two sisters, my best friend and two girlfriends, while Sifiso chose five friends. My bridal party was all dressed in white and Sifiso’s groomsmen all wore cream suits. We called them ‘P and S’s angels’!” Precious says there were many highlights on her Big Day, the first being their pastor from Rhema Church, Pastor Benjamin, who performed the marriage ceremony. Another major highlight was their first dance. “At times I even forgot there were other people in the room,” she remembers. Indoor fireworks set the mood for the evening. “It felt like a dream,” Precious says. “It made us fall in love all over again.” Precious was also thrilled to find that Thaba Eco Hotel had remodelled an entire suite for her. “It’s now called The Precious Suite,” she says proudly. “It’s been decorated in the shades of the colour palette I used for my wedding.” (The colours for the wedding were inspired by Precious’ magnificent rose gold and topaz engagement ring.) www.nubianbride.co.za |

“I was surprised how much I enjoyed experiencing what I give other people”
Another highlight was her parents’ speech. “My mom explained my name, why they called me Precious and why I turned out the way I am,” she explains. And then there were the showstoppers, the two magnificent bridal gowns designed for Precious by renowned designer Gert-Johan Coetzee. “I’ve taken so many brides to him,” she says, “because he really understands a black woman’s body. I enjoyed my fittings with him and I loved the two stunning gowns he created for me. He brought my ideas to life in the most beautiful way.” The dress was accessorised with exquisite Sophia Webster shoes from the UK. The fait accompli was the fragrances personalised for Sifiso and Precious by Jo Malone. “I was surprised how much I enjoyed experiencing what I give other people,” says Precious. “I had to physically make the decision to let go. At my first traditional wedding in March, I was too involved, so I couldn’t completely relax and enjoy the occasion. But at this wedding I felt like a bride. It was really good to see what that feels like.” “God showed up for us so much at this wedding. I noticed it in the smallest things –

REGISTRY
Wedding registry for the modern bride Registry expert Almèri Solomon from Yuppiechef gives ideas of what to add to your wish list for the modern home and kitchen
M
ove away from some of the tried and tested items usually put onto a registry and add some innovative products that will up the ante! This list of tips and tricks from a registry expert at Yuppiechef will simplify your registry and give you an insight into what’s on trend right now for the modern home.
so that your table will look good and you can entertain in style! Also, include items that you really need and which you are likely to use every day – think toasters, kettles, blenders… and make sure to include a few with a personalised touch, perhaps monogrammed tableware or sheets.
WHY DO YOU NEED A WEDDING REGISTRY?
WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF MODERN ITEMS THAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE REGISTRY?
A wedding registry is your wish list of things you’d love to receive as gifts in celebration of your Big Day! You put the list together at your leisure and your guests get to choose what they’d like to give you from your selection. This takes the guesswork out of buying a gift – guests aren’t always too sure what to buy and this gives them an idea of what you’d really like, as well as ensures you don’t end up receiving numerous items that are the same.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO PUT THE REGISTRY TOGETHER? We recommend setting up your registry early (three to four months prior to your wedding), so that it’s out of the way and you can focus on more pressing planning. The great thing about a Yuppiechef registry is that you can easily add or remove items from the list right up until your wedding day.
WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BEST REGISTRY GIFTS? First and foremost, the best gifts are items that you will cherish and use for a long time. Make sure that these items suit your lifestyle. For instance, if you’re unlikely to ever make a potjie meal, don’t add a potjie pot to your registry list. But, if you love dinner parties, make sure to include lovely crockery and cutlery
174
| www.nubianbride.co.za
Multifunctional kitchen appliances such as the Instant Pot multi-cooker, air fryers and stand mixers are amongst the hottest kitchen machines right now. We say, if it adds convenience to your kitchen and joy to your cooking, it’s definitely worth adding to your registry!
WHAT IS A UNIQUE WEDDING GIFT TO INCLUDE ON A REGISTRY? We pride ourselves on having a wide yet specially curated range where you’ll be sure to find gifts that are perfectly suited to you as a couple. Whether you’re a home chef in need of a blow torch for that perfectly crisp crème
brûlée, or your partner loves everything craft gin, we’ve got unique gifts that allow you to indulge your individual passions, but still enjoy the experience together.
WHAT SHOULD YOU GIVE THE COUPLE WHO HAVE EVERYTHING? Give them the gift of choice by giving them a gift card voucher. That way, they can shop for anything they want, either in-store or online, at their own leisure, or even choose something they might realise they’d love to have in their home after their wedding. Alternatively, you can never go wrong with basic essentials such as lustrous linen and quality towels. Many people don’t actually know that we stock an amazing range of homeware products from premium brands such as Linen House, Brabantia, Terry Lustre and more. Another favourite – a mixed case of some very special wine – makes for a great gift that the couple can enjoy together over the next few years.

LET’S TALK TRADITIONAL
Ukucelwa In the first of a series of articles explaining the important components of a traditional wedding, NKOSI ZONCI talks about ukucelwa, the meeting of the couple’s families
kucelwa is basically an introduction of the couple’s families. This is when the groom introduces his chosen bride to the rest of his family and expresses his dedication and feelings towards her. The ceremony certainly stirs up the dust; everything that follows is determined by the success of this introduction. In days of yore, during the wee hours of the morning, an umkhongi (trusted family friend), accompanied by the groom’s father and a friend of the groom, would be welcomed by the proud father of the bride-to-be and her uncles. Nowadays, the event is usually a brunch with a menu that combines both modern and traditional dishes. This is accompanied by umqombothi (beer) – in small quantities, of course. The modern-day ukucelwa begins with the arrival of a group of people specifically chosen and trusted by the groom’s family to represent them. On their arrival, the father of the bride-to-be (usingaye) will ask her mother to summon her. This special ceremony involves the family of the bride-tobe showcasing their abilities when it comes to housekeeping, cooking and hosting,
176
| www.nubianbride.co.za
aspects that are under serious scrutiny by the groom’s family. This ceremony may seem insignificant, but it’s actually of the utmost importance because the lobola negotiation and the possible wedding date are dependent on how things go.
HOUSEKEEPING RULES Although the ceremony is a family event, hosting the in-laws involves making sure that everything is shipshape. There’s a delightful song usually sung at Zulu weddings: ‘Shanelani amabala zingane nangu umakoti ezongena eza nodumo lwakhe’ (‘Children, you had better sweep the yard – here comes the bride’). As well as the house, the garden and yard also need to be in perfect condition. According to Zulu tradition, the cleanliness of the yard determines the firmness of the woman of the house. If you have a front vegetable garden, it is also important that you make sure it’s in good condition. Fences should be mended and there should be no weeds in sight. The great thing about the modern ukucelwa ceremony is that everything depends on the couple’s budget. So, if the
dining room isn’t big enough, the veranda will do. If you do have the ceremony inside the house, it’s important to display photographs of the bride as well as proof of her academic, cultural and sporting achievements. Remember, the bride is in the spotlight on this important day.
FOOD AND DRINK Whether the menu is traditional or modern, the food has to be exceptionally delicious – and that includes the umqombothi created for the ancestors. KwaZulu-Natal resident Nomfundo Msimango, who recently hosted this ceremony as part of her traditional prenuptials, says she was lucky as her mother’s umqombothi is notoriously good. “I remember that after the ceremony, the groom’s family took some umqombothi home with them. We also gave them pumpkins and spinach from our vegetable garden.” Tradition has it that if the family of the bride-to-be has a vegetable garden in the front, it’s important to serve some of the harvest to guests at the ceremony. Apparently, this pressurises the groom to work even harder in the future to ensure his bride’s well-being.
