From our Contributing Editor

Meet Mwai Yeboah, our celebrity contributor for this magnificent issue of Nubian Bride, who is on a mission to show the world what Africa has to offer in terms of destination weddings

H

i, I’m Mwai. If I let you listen to my heartbeat, you’d find it beats loudest for my son, my husband, family, friends, the wedding industry and, most importantly, for Africa. I’m a bit of spice, love and soul. I’m an all-around lover of all things dreamy, refined luxury weddings and exquisite destinations. When Nubian Bride reached out to me and asked me to be a contributing editor, I was truly touched. I am a huge advocate for the African wedding industry and the importance of supporting African talent. My heart is all in, because I want the world to know more about Africa – its beauty, culture and the luxury this continent has to offer for couples planning to get married somewhere magical. I believe Africa is the next Italy when it comes to destination weddings. I believe with all my heart that Africa has the talent, vendors, venues and hospitality to bring lovers from around the world to say “I do” in the most wondrous, intentional and adventurous way. By this point you’re probably wondering who I am and what gives me the credibility to have such a strong vision for Africa and the wedding industry. Let me introduce myself. I’ll pour you a cup of my specialty tea – mix of ginger, lemon and honey – and tell you a bit about myself, my career and my vision for the African wedding industry. With more than 15 years’ experience in the wedding industry, I can wholeheartedly say that I have been blessed with the opportunity to plan many exclusive luxury weddings both in London and around the world. As my career grew, I couldn’t resist the urge to focus on my beautiful Africa. I knew that I had to show people from around the world that Africa is truly magnificent, so I began to plan destination weddings to Africa and that’s when my mission and vision got its wings. I reached out to various wedding vendors and government agencies in Africa and we founded a wedding association that would help empower African planners, florists, venues, caterers, entertainers and other vendors with the right resources and skills to plan weddings. I feel like I found a gap in the wedding market and I want to close it. Africa has innate wonder and overlooked luxury to offer. Leaving the gap open is a loss to the African market and its people.

PUBLISHER Gina Borthwick | gina@nubianbride.co.za EDITOR Sharon Preston | sharpreston@yahoo.com CONTRIBUTING EDITOR Mwai Yeboah | mwai@lovefrommwai.co.uk ART DIRECTOR Haania Moosa | haania.moosa@gmail.com

As a destination wedding planner, I have planned luxury weddings in the US, India, UAE, Thailand, Portugal, Italy, Germany, France and many other countries. And, as beautiful and grandiose as most destinations are, nothing strikes my chord more than planning a wedding in enchanting Africa. As a contributing editor for Nubian Bride, my wish is to empower those in the African wedding industry to be bold in their pursuit of what makes them happy, to dream big and know that anything is possible when we work together. I want to continue to inspire vendors to plan their destination weddings in Africa. But I want to do more than share my passion for Africa with you. I want to connect with you by telling you about my favourite coffee shops, my love for tea, baking, reading, travelling, my life and, of course, my passion for wedding planning. After the toll that the pandemic brought upon us all in 2020 – especially for the wedding industry – I want to focus on the beauty of our continent. In this and coming issues, I want to highlight that there is a place in the luxury market for Africa both in terms of design and culture. I will also be sharing some of the beautiful hidden gems, locations in Africa that are ideal for weddings, as well as renowned African vendors and surreal real weddings that have taken place on this beautiful continent. I want the world to see Africa in a different light. I want to connect Africa to the world as well as talk about the latest trends, top picks for venues, designers and so much more. I am a resource of endless information and I want to pass it on to you so that you can be equipped with an awareness of what Africa has to offer. Looking to 2021, I want to celebrate Africa and its rich cultural heritage, showcase a new appreciation for black and introduce magical love stories that come to life on our beautiful continent. I hope I have given you a glimpse into my world and I hope to connect with you soon. Enjoy this issue of Nubian Bride!

TRENDS

WEDDING TRENDS IN UNPRECEDENTED TIMES Celebrity wedding planner and contributing editor for this issue of Nubian Bride, Mwai Yeboah, offers her take on the latest wedding trends for 2021, a year after the pandemic changed the world

Weddings are very personal and every single one that I’ve planned in my career has had a special detail that made it really awesome. But right now, we’re living in unprecedented times; the COVID-19 pandemic has brought so many differences to the way that we celebrate special occasions. Yes, there will always be new trends to embrace, lockdown notwithstanding, so let’s take a look at what’s trending right now. I have taken inspiration from current wedding reports as well as information on everything from floral trends and décor to fashion and interior designs. PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR

Accents of bright colours like Pantone’s Colour of the Year – yellow and grey – will prevail in 2021. Think the magical island of Capri, with its lemon yellows, blues and whites. And that’s just a taste of what’s in store…

PANTONE® 13-0647 TCX Illuminating

PANTONE® 17-5104 TCX Ulitamte Gray

TRENDS DRY FLOWERS

In décor, dry flowers are trending currently, as well as different elements like dried fruits. Also, watch out for open roses – we’re talking full blooms here, not rosebuds!

INTIMATE CELEBRATIONS

Less will be more in 2021, thanks to lockdown restrictions that come and go. This year, it’s all about the quality of an event in terms of details rather than the number of guests, so we’ll be seeing far more intimate weddings with the focus on special, touching details that mean a lot to the couple. Also, the food is likely to be more health conscious, a nod to staying healthy in times like these. Because life is so uncertain right now, and restrictions change so often, couples are finding a silver lining in changing plans that brings unexpected excitement into the mix. Of course, health and safety is a major consideration in weddings these days, meaning that what the couple had originally planned may have to change to suit COVID-19 regulations. But the parties will go on, and fun will be had by all! www.nubianbride.co.za |

21

TRENDS BACKYARD WEDDINGS

Already, 2021 has been a year of changes, cancellations and learning how to go with the flow. Backyard weddings have been booming and we expect them to continue to be a popular choice this year, for both safety and comfort reasons. Just because you’ve moved your celebration to the backyard doesn’t mean it’s not going to be exciting… we’re expecting this type of celebration to exceed all expectations. THE WEDDING PLANNER

Another trend for 2021 will be hiring a wedding planner. As uncertainty is the name of the game this year, thanks to the pandemic, more and more couples are choosing the assistance of an expert to help them put a wellplanned celebration in place, restrictions and cancellations notwithstanding.

22

LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION!

Lockdown has people across the globe anxious to experience new things and travel to distant destinations. Think of that old adage: “Distance makes the heart grow fonder”. And it’s true – people have been restricted from visiting places they love, spending time with the people they love and enjoying the experiences they’ve yearned for, for so long. Couples are ready for something fresh and exciting... and that’s exactly what the prospect of a destination wedding serves up. Many engaged couples have had to reschedule or put off their wedding altogether because of the pandemic. So, when it’s finally safe for them to host a celebration, I believe they will want to ‘go big’ – which could well mean getting married overseas. At this point, the couple is not just celebrating their love; they will be celebrating their health, the health of their family and friends and the fact that the world is finally starting to open its doors again. After lockdown, I think couples will take full advantage of exotic, far-flung destinations for their weddings.

TRENDS NEW WAYS TO CELEBRATE

Yes, COVID-19 has changed the world, but it has also made us become more creative when it comes to putting together a celebration. These days, couples are searching for more meaningful, memorable ways to show their love story

24

– regardless of uncertainty and restrictions. It’s all about the small things… the challenges you’ve overcome together, the meaningful moments that will be a part of your lives forever, that crazy-romantic engagement story you love retelling and the laughs (and tears) you’ve shared on your journey.

By shifting your focus from the celebration itself to the actual reason why you’re celebrating, you’ll find you’ll start to feel far more at ease and excited as you plan a new kind of wedding. After all, the celebration of love must go on – and preferably with a signature cocktail in hand!

AFRICAN ELEGANCE In this magnificent planning shoot, less is more when you have the spectacular backdrop of The Laurentin at Pont de Val at sunset

The bridal look Soft, feminine lace and tulle contrast with striking leather jewels.

Inspiration What a setting! A perfect African sunset was the main inspiration for this shoot; a combination of exquisite sundown colours in hues of yellow, orange and red with the French elegance that characterises picturesque Pont de Val.

Décor Both the cake and stationery used in this magical wedding were Shweshwe motives, offering a touch more African inspiration. In keeping with the contrast of the softness of the bridal look combined with leather jewellery, the flowers were a combination of romantic phalaenopsis orchids, lisianthus and roses that boldly contrasted with proteas and thorn tree branches. Décor was another innovative look – a soft grey tablecloth was the backdrop for ornate gold cutlery, gold-rimmed glasses and exquisite birds-ofparadise charger plates.

SUMMER PANTONE’s 2020 Colour of the Year is Classic Blue, ideal for a novel wedding colour scheme.

PLANNING

BLUES A blend of delft-style shades adds depth and volume, giving a refreshing look

O

ur grandmothers used to set the table with classic blue and white pieces – and now a pop of gorgeous delft is becoming fashionable once more and being used to brighten up weddings. What a refreshing change it makes, as well as being a reminder of summer days as the weather cools. PANTONE has chosen this gorgeous blue as the colour for 2020. Let’s follow its lead and use this glorious hue as inspiration…

The venue Kleiner Rijke in Hartbeespoort is a new venue with creative and beautifully adjoined architecture. The exquisitely designed chapel looks out over the dam and offers a unique, picturesque spot for the couple to say their vows. The reception hall is a vast space with stunning high ceilings, perfect for long tables and large weddings. The furniture has been designed to blend with the building’s stunning architecture. The entire setting was the perfect environment to reflect our shoot’s gorgeous blue and white theme. www.nubianbride.co.za |

31

PLANNING

Flowers and décor Cindy from The Bloom Room used a selection of delft pottery and blue china crockery mixed with thick pillar candle holders, tinted glassware and soft floral napkins. The royal blue and gold cutlery from Ninirichi’s stunning Meghan range was the perfect finishing touch for the tables. A mix of blue and white pillar candles flowed down the length of the table amongst glorious blue and white hydrangeas blended with dendrobium orchids, delphiniums, lisianthus, sea holly and tulips. The chapel was kept very natural with long pampas grass tied with blue ribbon on the chairs down the aisle, and the stunning statement arrangement above the altar featured pampas grass and penny gum (eucalyptus). In keeping with the unique flower arrangements, the bride’s bouquet was created using bold blue hydrangeas on a wooden hoop. Hoops like these are usually designed for bridesmaids’ posies as they offer a unique twist on the traditional, but it gave the bride in our shoot inspiration to play whilst holding the hoop. Also, a circle represents totality, wholeness and unity, symbolism that is carried through with wedding rings – what a great way to show your unity using your flowers!

Stationery The stationery elements replicated the blue china print on the menu and favour boxes, giving the overall concept and design elements a complete look.

PLANNING

Cake The main inspiration for this beautiful concoction was the delft crockery in the table setting. For the shoot, a structurally interesting, simple white cake was used to evoke a clean, white porcelain plate. The bold, familiar delft patterns on the cake were created by hand with edible paint. Cake designer Elli from Turquoise Squirrel chose to juxtapose designs that are found in delft pieces: a chinoiserie-style bird in watercolours as the centrepiece and bold, symmetrical patterns towards the bottom of the cake. This was then topped off with a sugar flower as Elli wanted to incorporate the graphic qualities into the flower as well by edging the petals in dark shades.

Dress This luxury designer gown is glamorous and timeless, dainty and feminine, designed with a medium-size train and beaded belt for a little sparkle.

BLACK PANTHER Creative wedding planner Mwai Yeboah created a magical setting for an African wedding inspired by the movie Black Panther to showcase African love, luxury, culture and lifestyle

Ceremony This spectacular wedding setting, literally a Hollywood movie come to life, was inspired by actor Chadwick Boseman, who played the superhero Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. “Since Chadwick’s passing, I felt deeply touched and inspired by his cancer story, as I have also had cancer (you can read about my cancer journey on my blog Love From Mwai Experiences),” Mwai explains.

PLANNING

“We had a lot in common. We are both of African descent, our African accents never sounded more familiar to the world than they do today thanks to him, but our private life with cancer is what really connects me to him. I was born in Zambia. Today, I live in the UK, but my heart continues to strongly beat for Africa, its people, culture and especially the African luxury wedding industry.”

www.nubianbride.co.za |

43

PLANNING

“To celebrate the life of Chadwick and the strong impression he made on the entire world by bringing everyone together, my wedding planning team and I travelled to Zambia in December 2020 to create this styled photoshoot inspired by Black Panther. I put together 40 tribesmen and women to recreate the movie scene at the waterfall with custom-made traditional outfits.”

PLANNING

water blessing & tongabezi “As you can see, the photographs not only pay tribute to Chadwick and the film Black Panther, they also show our love and inspiration for the African landscape and the unity of African people.”

Lebo&Tinyiko Picture-perfect and romantic, this couple’s wedding was a day to remember

REAL WEDDINGS

T

he couple first met in 2004 at a 50 Cent concert in Johannesburg. Lebo was 16 and Tinyiko was 18. They dated briefly and then parted ways. In 2007, they bumped into each other again and started dating seriously – and have been together ever since. Tinyiko proposed on holiday in Bangkok in 2016. “He got on one knee and asked me if I wanted to marry him.” Of course, Lebo said yes! They married a year later in December 2017 at Boschendal Wine Estate in the Cape Winelands. “It was a win. We loved the entire setting and the privacy. The rooms where the couple get ready are located right where the olive press is, which was perfect. We watched our guests arrive and then I took a beautiful short stroll to say ‘I do’.”

REAL WEDDINGS

“It was a stunning day, the weather was perfect although a little windy,” Lebo remembers. “We wanted a clean, elegant, timeless wedding and that’s what Marius, our wedding planner, created for us. He produced magic. I asked him for white, cream, gold and touches of peach and that’s what he delivered.” Lebo designed her wedding gown together with designer Biji La Maison. “I wanted something timeless and elegant, with clean lines,” she says. The second dress? “I tried it on at the store and it fitted like a glove.” The couple had two traditional weddings prior to the white wedding in December. “The white wedding was purely a religious ceremony,” Lebo explains. “The wedding day was the best party I’ve been to; it had the perfect mix of romance and pure fun set against a beautiful mountain backdrop. The entire day was filled with love, the energy was perfect.” www.nubianbride.co.za |

“Take in the moment and truly enjoy yourself” For Lebo, the highlight of the day was “walking down the aisle with my dad, saying ‘I do’ to my husband and the speeches. Tinyiko’s speech blew me away. The reception was another major highlight.” The couple followed their magical wedding with a honeymoon in Bali. Advice for brides-to-be? “Don’t stress, what’s meant to be will be. Have fun – you spent a lot of money, so enjoy the day. Take in the moment and truly enjoy yourself. Find a wedding planner you can trust and let them run the show while you sip on some bubbles. Alice & Armin This magnificent African wedding spanned two countries and included plenty of love, laughter and celebration

REAL WEDDINGS

A “Our wedding in Rwanda was centered around Rwandan tradition”

lice and Armin met at a conference in 2012 where Armin was one of the speakers and started dating soon after. He proposed on a road trip in France. Alice remembers, “We were at a beautiful remote location with a very lovely terrace overlooking the ocean. I remember he said to me that he loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me and I said the same. He asked me if I would say that even without a ring and I said, ‘Of course, a ring is just a formality, because in my head and my heart, I am already married to you’. He then went down on one knee and proposed with a ring. Of course, I said ‘yes’! This was followed by a very romantic dinner.” Alice describes the wedding as “a timeless, classic and romantic atmosphere full of elegance. I wanted it cosy and warm but luxurious at the same time. I also wanted my guests to feel included and part of the wedding.” Their traditional wedding was in Kigali, Rwanda in Alice’s mother’s garden and the white wedding was in Livingstone, Zambia.

“We loved how at one with nature we felt” “Our wedding in Rwanda was centred around Rwandan tradition,” Alice explains. “We went all out on the ceremony with royal cows, traditional dancers and Rwandan wedding ceremonial rituals. The white wedding was held in Zambia. The ceremony was at The Fishers overlooking a pond and the reception was in a beautiful glass marquee on the lawns of the Royal Livingstone Hotel. For the white wedding, we incorporated traditional ceremonial practices as well as including some Irish practices to embrace Armin’s culture. “We picked the Zambian venues because of our love of the outdoors; we wanted to feel one with nature and have a vibrant outdoor wedding that was a mix of luxury and African culture. We wanted a place where our guests could experience Africa. Having the white wedding at Victoria Falls in Livingstone was a plus, because not only was it on our bucket list, but also on many of our guests’ wish lists, too. We loved how at one with nature we felt.” The couple chose a classic feel for the ceremony with white blooms and plenty of greenery. The reception was “very romantic, elegant and classy” and “continued with the timeless theme,” Alice explains. “We chose deep, rich colours – maroons, plums and burgundies that mixed beautifully with deep pinks. We threw in gold accents in the beautiful vases, cutlery and glassware. The lighting was soft and romantic. It was beautiful.”

Alice wanted a dress she could wear at the white wedding ceremony as well as for the reception and after party. “This was the first dress I tried on when we were in Paris,” she says. “Although I tried on many more, none made me feel quite like this one.” For Alice, the highlight of the day was the way the wedding team “nailed the ceremony look”. The children’s choir at the ceremony was another highlight and “the mothers’ dance was truly a special moment.” The couple then honeymooned in Cape Town for a week, staying at a beautiful boutique hotel overlooking the sea. Advice for brides- and grooms-to-be? “Try to work within your agreed budget,” Alice suggests. Thembelihle& Senzo A dream wedding for a long-standing couple who have been inseparable since they met

REAL WEDDINGS

“When everything suddenly came together, it felt like a dream!”

T

hembelihle and Senzo met at university when they were both studying Engineering. “I was doing my first year and had recently moved into new student accommodation,” Thembi remembers. “Senzo insisted that I play a game of cards with him and some friends. He later introduced himself to me and we became best friends; we walked to lectures together and studied together. We were inseparable.” In 2016, when Senzo was in the SA Navy and living in Cape Town, Thembi used to visit him over weekends. “On one of those visits, he told me that he was officially ready to do ‘the right thing’ and send his uncles for lobola,” she remembers. Then planning for the wedding began. “We knew exactly what we liked and disliked, so most of our suppliers received a clear brief. When everything suddenly came together, it felt like a dream!”

The couple chose Red Ivory in Haartebeespoort as their wedding venue. “We wanted a venue that epitomised our love of nature, and this was a perfect fit,” she says. “We loved the venue’s modern design, the pond inside and the breathtaking views. It was the only venue we visited – and we fell in love with it!” They chose greenery and white flowers with a touch of rose gold for their colour scheme. As they are very spiritual people, the couple wanted to incorporate their heritage into every part of the wedding. Thembi had a particular vision for her wedding gown. “Lizette from Bridal Alchemy completely understood what I was trying to achieve and brought everything to life,” she says. Thembi’s highlights? “Seeing my dad step out of a car and coming towards me to walk me down the aisle. It really brought tears to my eyes,” she remembers. “My biggest highlight was seeing my husband trying to hold back his tears; it was such an emotional moment.” Senzo’s highlight was “seeing my wife down the aisle; I had the chills thinking about how long I’ve been waiting for this moment. She looked absolutely beautiful… a bride specially made for me!” Senzo also paid tribute to his father. “I love him and still carry him in my heart. I pray he’s proud of the man I’ve become.” Advice for a bride-to-be? “Plan everything and make decisions with your partner, then involve everyone else later,” says Thembi. Cartier & Floyd The wedding of Carter a former Miss Earth Zambia, to the love of her life, Floyd, was a blockbuster event

M “The proposal took place on a lavish yacht - it took my breath away”

odel, luxury influencer and lawyer as well as former Miss Earth Zambia, Cartier and her husband-to-be, Floyd, went all out for their wedding, which included a complete flower ceiling of white hanging Wisteria flowers, a 2m wedding cake and four flower walls. And that’s just the start! Cartier met Floyd when she was 17, in matric. He was 22, completing his Physiotherapy degree. They met at a rugby game and have been inseparable ever since. Floyd had to propose twice, Cartier admits. “The first time was a complete failure! He booked a phenomenal luxury holiday to Thailand where he planned to propose. He hired an international planning team, was going to fly in photographers, made sure hair and make-up were organised and set up the perfect proposal. On the day of departure we found out I would not be able to travel, as I needed a visa for my Zambian passport. When I found out all the arrangements he’d made, I was devastated.” So Floyd had to arrange the proposal all over again. “The second proposal was an absolute dream and he made sure to keep it local,” Cartier says. “Every detail was in place. He arranged with my

“The guests could not believe that the beautiful floral structure in the centre of the venue was in fact our wedding cake” boss that I fly to Cape Town. My boss told me I had to attend a launch event at the Cape Grace Hotel. Floyd organised a custom gown designed by one of my favourite designers, as well as hair, make-up, a videographer and photographer. The ‘event’ took place on a lavish yacht – it took my breath away. The front of the yacht was set up with rose petals and candles and the captain docked overlooking a perfect sunset with Table Mountain as the backdrop. Floyd went down on one knee and popped the question. He gave me the most beautiful engagement ring I’ve ever seen. This was followed by a private rose petal dinner at the phenomenal Hilton Hotel Restaurant. It was definitely one of the best days of my life.” The couple chose Ananda Wedding and Conference Venue in Lusaka as their wedding venue. “The chapel and reception could be held at the same location, making the logistics easier for guests,” Cartier says. “It also had the space to be transformed into my visionary dream wedding.” The look for the wedding was clean and simple using only white, gold and green. Invitations and stationary were gold and pearl white and the dance floor was white with the couple’s wedding logo printed in gold. “The table tops had gold plate settings with crystal glasses: even the crockery was gold. We placed hand-made gold candles on the tables and the table numbers were cut in gold mirror,” Cartier says. Cartier’s father, an event coordinator, prepared the flower walls for the wedding. “He was also the mastermind behind creating a gorgeous full ceiling of wisteria flowers.

I had a grand cake that stood two metres high, decorated with 3,000 roses and 1,000 orchids. The guests could not believe that the beautiful floral structure positioned in the centre of the venue was in fact our wedding cake.” Cartier’s first wedding gown was extra special, as it was the same one her mother wore at her wedding 20 years previously. “It was a beautiful handmade green beaded gown with a long train. My bridesmaids and flower girls wore gold and my maid of honour wore a lighter golden shade.” The couple loved every moment of their Big Day. “The reception was absolutely outstanding and the pastor gave us a moving and meaningful ceremony,” Cartier remembers. Her favourite moment? “Walking down the aisle to my favourite song and seeing my husband cry as he saw me. Our eyes were glued to one another.” Cartier’s advice for brides-to-be: “As hard as it is, ‘don't sweat the small stuff – the wedding day goes by so fast. Try to enjoy every moment. So many months of planning go into one day, so make sure to be present throughout and communicate your feelings. Also, make sure to delegate!”

Mmapitso&Tebatso From childhood friends to a whirlwind romance and a wedding that was perfect in every way

REAL WEDDINGS

“We wanted a sophisticated, classic and timeless wedding”

M

mapitso and Tebatso grew up in the same area and became childhood friends. It was only in 2017 that they decided that dating wouldn’t ruin their great friendship. “Let’s just say everyone was elated!” Mmapitso says. After just over a month of dating, Tebatso approached the subject of marriage, “And of course, I said yes,” Mmapitso remembers. Tebatso then secretly asked her father out for lunch and asked him for Mmapitso’s hand in marriage. “My uncle went over to her parents’ house with a letter soon after that and our journey officially began,” he says. “She received her ring just before our traditional wedding. We are constantly teased because of our whirlwind romance!” Both agree that the wedding was perfect in every way. “The weather was perfect, our guests looked stunning and the day’s proceedings were a true reflection of who we are and our love for each other. The ceremony set the tone

for the day and the emotions, love and fun continued throughout the event. We really had a great time.” The couple tied the knot in the Rose Garden of the magnificent Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff. This was followed by a reception in the venue’s Arcadia Ballroom. “We wanted a venue where our guests would feel special but also feel comfortable. The venue formed the perfect backdrop to a wedding dream come true.” The décor and theme were carefully planned and perfectly executed. “We wanted a sophisticated, classic and timeless wedding,” Mmapitso says. “Our colours were soft, with bold touches of black and marble. Our overall wedding theme was ‘Faith, Hope & Love’ and the venue and décor matched perfectly.” Mmapitso chose to wear a fit and flare gown with a sweetheart neckline. She matched this with a lace, off-the-shoulder bolero to highlight her neckline. The couple’s white wedding was celebrated exactly a year after their traditional wedding. “For this celebration we saw each other for the first time at the altar after being apart for some time and this was truly special. I also had the privilege of my mom dressing me and my dad walking me down the aisle,” Mmapitso says with a smile. The highlight of their white wedding was the meaningful ceremony. “It reaffirmed our love and commitment to each other. Partaking in Holy Communion and planting a tree to mark our journey was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed the party and celebrating our love for each other with close friends and family. The day will be etched in our hearts and memories forever.” This wedding was actually their first anniversary as they had a traditional marriage the year before. “Reaffirming our vows to each other annually is important to both of us,” Tebatso says. “It’s important to check in with each www.nubianbride.co.za |

other every now and then to see if we are both still enjoying our marriage. We believe that this will make our marriage last forever.” Advice for couples about to get married? “Choose suppliers who are not only great at what they do, but are also reliable,” Mmapitso says. “A wedding planner and coordinator is a must. You don’t have to relinquish control, but the assistance helps a lot and allows you to enjoy the build-up. Finally, enjoy the celebrations and if something goes wrong, don’t take it to heart – you are marrying the love of your life after all, and that’s the only thing that matters. THE COLLECT I V E X P E R I E N C E A wedding dress by Tuelo Nguyuza became an overnight sensation when he created a masterpiece for renowned influencer Sarah Langa. The talented Pretoria-based fashion designer tells us his story of how his brand, TN Collectiv, took South and West Africa, the UK and USA by storm

DESIGNER STUDIO Tell us about yourself. I’m 33, based in Pretoria and have been designing outfits for the past eight years. I studied fashion design at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria. Then, in 2014, I entered a competition, Fast Track™, an initiative that is part of Africa Fashion International (AFI). It identifies and invests in the best of Africa’s young designers. I was one of four winners and this gave me the impetus to start working towards my first fashion collection, which I showed at AFI Fashion Week two years later. This is how I got into the industry and became known. I have now shown at AFI Fashion Weeks five times in total. How did you start your business? My family helped me establish a studio in 2014. They were very supportive and assisted me financially in getting TN Collectiv up and running. I initially received work through word of mouth and the business grew from there. I showed my first collection at AFI Fashion Week in 2016, which gave me lots of visibility. At the time, I was also working behind the scenes, designing and creating costumes for shows and performances. Through Fashion Week and the shows, I was exposed to many celebrities and public figures.

that my Instagram feed was buzzing. Stylist and photographer Jerri Mokgofe, who has a well-known blog called According to Jerri, had posted a pic of Sarah in her wedding gown and tagged me in the pic on Instagram – I went from 3,000 followers to 10,000 in less than 24 hours! With Jerri’s 20,100 followers and Sarah’s 333,300, my Instagram feed was out of control. How did the Sarah Langa gown affect your business?

I had no idea how popular the Sarah Langa gown would be. I was immediately commissioned to make more than 10 of this design. Right away, people started emailing me and I was getting WhatsApps enquiring about the dress. From there, I started working on a wedding gown collection, Collectiv Culture – this was still 2016. It consisted of six different traditional looks inspired by different cultures that resonated with my clients, including Zulu, Pedi, Tswana, Xhosa, Ndebele and Swati.

My gowns take traditional elements and make them modern without losing that special traditional flavour

Tell us about the famous Sarah Langa dress. I met influencer Sarah Langa around that time and we became friends. In 2016, she asked me to make a contemporary traditional Swati-inspired wedding gown for her. I created a very simple gown with a raw silk bodice and traditional Swati fabric. The gown was simple, well made and worn by the right person. The timing was perfect too; people were ready to see something different, instead of a traditional Westerninspired gown. The gown had a 20 percent Western feel, but I used traditional fabric in a modern way, never losing the traditional inspiration whilst incorporating a modern look. Why was the dress so special? It was the first wedding gown I ever designed. Up until then I had only designed evening gowns, cocktail wear and Ready to Wear. The weekend of Sarah’s wedding I was out of town – I’d flown to Durban to assist backstage at a show – but I noticed www.nubianbride.co.za |

DESIGNER STUDIO

You can’t run a business on hope and promises so that they can learn about the business, how to plan, how to price, how to be a professional. What advice do you have for brides-to-be? Ask yourself: What is the day going to be like? What do you have in mind? Paint a picture of your day and how things will transpire as the day goes on. Work out what type of wedding you want – contemporary, lots of tradition, a small or large gathering. Must the event be simple or do you want to put on a show? How do you help a bride choose a design for her wedding dress? Brides don’t care about their personality when it comes to the dress. All they want to achieve is a particular look, a gown that looks amazing. I’m lucky – my clients trust my work. They tell me what colour gown they want and I create the design. Through the years, my design aesthetic has become a popular one, taking traditional elements and making them modern without losing that special traditional flavour.

How was your first bridal collection received? I put together a photo shoot featuring Sarah Langa as well as Bucie, the singer, and actress Gail Mabalane. Jeri Mokgofe shot the campaign. All three women are exceptionally well known. Bucie is an R&B and house singer; I dressed her for numerous performances and also designed her wedding gown. Gail is an actress, model, singer and businesswoman, who appeared on the South African TV series, The Wild. We shot the dresses in an abandoned building and then we all synchronised our phones and posted a teaser pic of Sarah in a Swati-inspired gown, only showing her face and half the

74

dress. Later, we posted the whole picture. This time, my Instagram following went from 12,000 to more than 20,000 in a week! What have you learned on your journey to success? You have to go through certain things to get to the next step of your life. You have to put business first. You can’t run a business on hope and promises. What I learned in business helped me build character. Interning at various fashion houses such as Augustine and Tsotetsi KL before I started on my own taught me so much. I had to go through torture and learn the ropes the hard way. This is one of the reasons I’m so keen to take on interns and teach them,

Tell us about the standout gowns you have designed Of course, there are the famous ones, especially those worn by Bucie, Sarah and Gail. An American client chose a Tswana dress from my Gail Mabalane collection. She was a lady from Atlanta, marrying a man from Soweto. As she was so far away, I made her a special sketch of the gown so that she could get the proper measurements taken remotely. I also created an entirely new concept for a British client, a style we have called the 3-Tier Dress, which has become very popular. What’s coming up for TN Collectiv? I’m planning a range of African contemporary everyday wear using prints that I am creating which are inspired by different cultures. This will be a new, fresh Ready to Wear range made from universal fabric – there will be T-shirts, bomber jackets and many other garments. I may also tap into the corporate market. www.tncollectiv.com

QUEEN

Every bride is a queen for at least one day – the day she gets married. These inspirational photographs depict different brides from different parts of Africa, starting with the South African bride and the Nigerian bride on this spread, and followed by the Ghanian bride (left) and Kenyan bride (right) on the upcoming pages. Each depicts the beauty of a particular culture that has pushed boundaries and modernised, mixing traditional elements with a white wedding look

South African Bride SA Zulu bridal necklace Nakuru Crafts, Kenya | @naruki_crafts Beaded jewellery is the Zulu language of love. Brides-to-be usually make two necklaces in matching colours – one for her husband-to-be and one for herself. These matching necklaces symbolise their love and union. The Zulu People are a living example of the importance of embracing your roots. The look is colorful and strong, plentiful and striking and showcases that pride.

This look embraces the Western tradition of a white wedding dress combined with the traditional bold, colorful coral beads you’ll see at Nigerian Weddings. This look is all about embracing one’s culture, showcasing the strength, spirit, and boldness of Nigeria and its people.

Accommodation includes 22 suites, 16 pool suites and six beach pool suites, each with its own little plunge pool and sundeck offering scenic views. HONEYMOONS

One of a kind

Namibia’s other-worldly desert landscapes and vast openness make it one of the most exciting places to visit on a unique honeymoon escape, especially in a brand new safari lodge that has just opened in this sub-Saharan paradise. Book your honeymoon the moment restrictions are lifted and borders are open Photography Adrian Gaut | www.agaut.com

Located on 50,000 hectares of private land, Habitas Namibia was originally a hunting lodge and has since been transformed into a wildlife reserve with a luxurious and exclusive safari lodge. The second property from global hospitality group, Habitas, which first opened the Habitas Tulum hotel in Mexico, Habitas Namibia is located 45 minutes from Windhoek airport. Like the Mexican establishment, this unique hotel offers a one of a kind travel experience. Extremely sustainable, the lodge offers just 15 private guest lodges, each custom-built with the least possible impact on the surrounding environment. The guest lodges are all secluded, offering the utmost privacy. They are created from stretch tent material and mesh, and feature comfortable king-size beds, rain showers, private fire pits and wrap-around decks. If you are thinking of taking some of the wedding party with you, there’s an existing private villa on the property that is large enough to accommodate 10 guests. Situated on a ridge overlooking a vast open landscape, Habitas Namibia features a restaurant that serves locally sourced, organic food, fire pits, an outdoor swimming pool and deck, spa, library and various areas where guests can relax. Unlike other safari lodges, Habitas Namibia is not only about luxury and a safari experience. It focuses on communing with people and nature as well as wildlife. Founded by Oliver Ripley, Kfir Levy and Eduardo Castillo, the Habitas group is known for its globally curated experiences that focus on bringing people together around wellness, food and music to form a deeper connection with themselves, others and nature. Namibia Habitas uses this focus, but keeps its own identity, which is tied to its unique wildlife, nature and local culture. Game viewing here involves viewing elephant, giraffe and antelope as well as a variety of bird species – and the numbers are growing, thanks to the group’s ongoing conservation efforts. At the lodge, staff are sourced, trained and hired from the local community. Guests enjoy various activities including safari drives with participation in animal tracking, safari walks led by local San Bushmen, workshops on cooking and medicinal plants, outdoor movies featuring educational films and documentaries, conservation activities, live local music gatherings with drum circles and dancing – the list is endless. In addition, there are daily wellness activities such as yoga and meditation. In keeping with the new reimagined focus on luxury as an experience rather than being cocooned in traditional five-star offerings, this beautiful lodge is certainly unique. If you’re keen to enjoy a truly immersive and extraordinary honeymoon that combines seclusion in the wild with a chance to get to know the locals, Habitas Namibia offers that – and much more. www.habitasnamibia.com www.nubianbride.co.za |

TEDDY Sharon Preston chats to supreme wedding cake maker Teddy Zaki

Teddy Zaki and his family run the hugely successful Just Teddy Fine Boulangerie & Patisserie in Hyde Park Corner shopping centre. Their wedding cakes are as legendary as their croissants and delicate pastries, and the place is always full to capacity, especially with people who book large tables for their exceptional high teas. This business is ‘all in the family’, with Teddy as baker, his son Jeff, who is a food and beverage expert, his wife Natasha, who is a specialist at moulding fondant and sugar work, and his daughter Jordyne, who is a qualified pastry chef. “Natasha keeps us focused,” says Teddy. “She has a wonderful way with people. I often find her deep in conversation with people who don’t speak a word of English!” Teddy says he has always wanted to have a family business like this one, as they are all passionate about food. Of course, wedding cakes are a big part of the business. In fact, “I actually made my first wedding cake on the final episode of The Great South African Bake Off, the South African series of this BBC Lifestyle show, where I was runner-up in 2015. I had the recipe in mind in case I got that far in the competition – it was a combination of cake and doughnuts.”

After coming second in the series, Teddy, who has been baking since he was five years old, started a business in Fox Street, which moved to Hyde Park less than two years ago. As with every business, there have been many ups and downs, but this close-knit family has taken it all in their stride. Jeff tells the story of their very first outsourced order for a major local cosmetics company. Driving to the venue in Midrand, the croquembouche they had created started falling apart – one bun fell off. “By the time we got to the Midrand offramp, there was no more croquembouche,” Jeff says with a wry smile. “So we put it back together on the side of the highway, our very first deconstructed croquembouche! The company loved it so much, they ordered five more in the months to come.” Teddy’s stories about wedding cakes are just as entertaining. He’s made well over 200 so far, he says, but the most unusual was one he convinced a bride to try. “It was a cake that I had been yearning to do,” he says. “It was plain butter cream, with edible flowers that I stuck petal by petal onto the cake. The result was so colourful and unique. It was the perfect

cake for the setting, which was a garden wedding with just 50 guests.” The most over-the-top cake the Just Teddy team ever created was for the M-Net TV series The River. “They asked for something very OTT and the budget was unlimited. So I created five tiers of fondant coated with fondant flowers. When it was completed, the cake was taller than the two confectioners who put it together. We moulded flowers for over a month to put on the cake – there were more than 1,000 flowers in total!” While we are chatting, Jeff admits to dropping a wedding cake when they first opened in Hyde Park. Teddy takes it in his stride and tells us the story of receiving a call at 9am from someone who needed a cake for a spur-of-the-moment wedding at 10am that same day. “I got it done!” he says proudly. “With the bakery on site it’s so easy – we try to never turn away a request. We always make a plan.” And that’s the secret to the Zaki family’s success. An incredible passion for what they do, plenty of creativity and talent and a family work ethic that is unmatched. www.justteddy.co.za www.nubianbride.co.za |
