The general rule of thumb is that all the water should be filtered at least once every 24 hours. When the pool is used frequently in summer, filtering should be increased. However, more than three filtering cycles per 24-hour period are considered wasteful and unnecessary. Tip: To determine how long the pool pump has to run to complete one filtering cycle, divide the capacity of the pool (in litres) by the flow rate of the pool pump (in litres per minute) to arrive at the number of minutes needed to filter all the water once.

love new beginnings and change, especially exciting ones like this. So, hello everyone, I can’t wait to get to know all of you. I’m so thrilled to be working on a fabulous product like Joburg Style. My first month has been a whirlwind. A manic deadline with late nights, take-away pizza in the office – we had curry once – and, most importantly, many laughs while we were putting this beautiful magazine together. Funny thing, deadlines. While we’re dealing with them, we swear never to leave things to the eleventh hour again. And then, when the next one rolls round, we’ve clearly forgotten our promise and the same things happen. In fact, maybe we like deadlines – they drive us, push us to work harder. Perhaps successful entrepreneur Nolan Bushnell had it spot on: “The ultimate inspiration is the deadline.” So, let’s see what this deadline produced. You’ll notice we’ve kept the new season in mind for this issue. The stunning colours reflect those beginning to emerge outside. I just love spring; what’s not to love? Everything is so cheery. And with the jacarandas in bloom and the first of those fantastic Highveld storms, we’re reminded how lucky we are to live in a place like this. Our shining cover stars are the beautiful Chiano Sky and dreamy Federico Fernandez. They talk about life, love, and everything in between. For fashion we called on talented performance artists to strut their stuff, resulting in a sublime feast for the eyes. We journey to India in our international travel feature and, locally, we showcase everything the West Coast has to offer. Ben Skinner wows us with his magnificently shot photographs in our Photo Essay, and we take a tour of Marianne Fassler’s divine home. I’m also very happy to announce our new section on books and e-books, which is set to become a regular feature. I’m a bit of a bookworm myself, so let me know if you’ve read anything wonderful lately, I’d love to hear about it. Let me stop right there and let you get to the rest of the magazine. Enjoy the spring in your step and get stuck in. Till next time,

Cover Profile
When
these stars walk into a room, they own it. Not just because they’re gorgeous – that’s uncontested – but because their talent knows no bounds. I must admit I might have been a little bit intimidated at first, but there really was no reason to be. They’re both humble, down to earth and are just living for the moment loving what they do. Chiano Sky started singing at the age of 10 and at 17, while waitressing at Simply Asia, was scouted by a well-known South African DJ who sent her demo to EMI Music. She was signed a week later. “I was just out of high school and still needed to discover who I was,” she says. It took her six months to write music for her first album Lipstick, and with the help of Andre Scheepers, her first single debuted on the radio in August 2011. Sick, Sick was a smash hit and her second single, Walking Away, maintained its spot on Highveld’s top 40 chart longer than any other song. Considering she’s only 20, with her whole life ahead of her, her career has been more than impressive to date. “My music doesn’t fall into the average pop genre and I never wanted it to. It has a lot of jazz and blues influences. However, my style isn’t set in stone; I’m still experimenting and learning all the time. More than anything, a track has to inspire me and drive me. There’s no specific rulebook when it comes to music. I’m still finding myself,” she says. Chiano Sky describes herself as an “old soul” and attributes her love of music to the likes of Marvin Gaye and Nat King Cole. “I absolutely love oldie classics,” she laughs. Although born in Cape Town, she was raised in Joburg and has lived in the City of Gold her whole life. “I don’t think people understand how wonderful the city is,” she says. She isn’t an allnight club-goer and would much rather spend time at her home in Rosebank. That’s not to say she doesn’t like a party every now and then. “I love going to places like Liberation Café in Melville where my friends and I can pick our own songs on the Jukebox and have a dance. I’m also a big fan of Beefcakes in Illovo; it’s an environment you can freely express yourself in.” She also likes to frequent places like Arts on Main and the Neighbourgoods Market over the weekend. “I can put a quirky outfit on, enjoy the good food, and just relax.” When it comes to fashion, Chiano Sky says her style is unique. “I love trawling through secondhand and charity shops for one-of-a-kind vintage pieces. Of course, every now and then I like a good Sandton shopping sesh. I mean, what girl doesn’t?”

As real as the girl next door, Chiano Sky says she’s sure of who she is and is very comfortable within herself. “In this industry you have to stay realistic throughout the whole process. I’m never going to be everyone’s cup of tea and I’m okay with that. I’m not stressed out about too many things; you just have to go with the flow in this game of life.” What a great philosophy. Her name suits her perfectly. “My mom is quite eccentric and always loved the name Luciano. So when I came along, she had to use it in some way.” And Sky? “Well, my mom always said, ‘The sky’s the limit.’” And, it certainly is for this star. Federico Fernandez is oh so charming. This multi-talented, multi-faceted and multiinstrumentalist musician, actor, poet and producer arrived in South Africa from Buenos Aires 13 years ago, where he made a name for himself as a model in Cape Town. He fell in love with the country, the people, the vibe of Joburg and, most importantly, his wife. The 36 year old has founded and embarked on three music projects. Son of 1000 is a rock band which has toured the country and their singles have been played on various radio stations. Project Libertad is a Latin band taking inspiration from Santana, and then there’s the alternative/electronica project Federico has
coined The F-spot, reminiscent of Massive Attack and Radiohead. “I want to take my listeners on a journey to an alternate universe and have them experience something they’ve never experienced before.” He adds, “I make music for people to dance to. It’s sexy with a hippy element to it.” Federico is currently putting the final touches to his book called Idiosyncrasies, a prose and sometimes rhyme book of exquisite poems. On top of that, he has been acting for years and has landed many lead roles in commercials, locally and internationally. He’s also featured in films – his last role was as a terrorist I’m not stressed out about too in the series Strike Back many things; you just have to go season 4. “I live by this with the flow in this game of life motto: Live your life as if this will be your last day on earth,” he says. And his style? “Well, that’s easy. I’m all about comfort, while looking slick, with a little bit of grunge inspiration in there.” You can’t help but notice Federico’s beautiful tattoos. “They’re a tribute to my family, my father and other icons, like the legendary Jimmy Hendrix.” Showstoppers, stars, call them what you will – the world really is their oyster and there is no stopping them now. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 23

t first sight, he strikes a Bowie-like figure: tall, lanky, pallid, androgynous, and clearly a man-out-of-time. Ben Skinner’s time is not the future, but the Victorian era with all its dandyish sensuality and imperial bloody-mindedness, bound by a thin hide of civilisation. His woolly mutton-chop sideburns and Daliesque curled moustache are the most apparent signs of his predilections. His pale eyes, coolly appraising behind his round tortoise-shell glasses, give warning of the deep arrogance of a craftsman besieged by today’s disposable, corner-cutting culture. For Skinner is not only a perfectionist in his tailoring – whipping up with a dash and consummate ease a woman’s pantsuit of breathtakingly daring construction and sublime fit – but he appears to excel at anything he puts his long-fingered hands to, from setbuilding to photography. His studio, at 61 Sixth Street, Parkhurst, bursts at the seams with insights into his unusual competencies and is the location of bespoke corsetry firm Arwen Garmentry, run by Skinner and his partner Arwen Swan. The studio is not only the showcase of Swan’s refined and exacting wearable works-of-art in lush brocades, silks, satins and exotic fabrics, but is also the couple’s home, an aviary for a bewildering array of species, and a workshop where a small staff conjure wonders on their sewing machines. Rowdy candy-striped corsets jostle for space on the rails with svelte silvery evening gowns, while a display case boasts antique top hats, gloves, eyeglasses and medical instruments, and the gleaming steel jib of a former X-ray machine provides the desk with an arc of light. A railway signal, shorn off its mountings by an elephant near Victoria Falls, recalls Skinner’s Zimbabwean origins. When Skinner fires up the beautiful old St Marco cappuccino machine, the room is transformed into a salon where intellectuals and artists joust. But when the crowds have gone, the studio becomes Skinner’s photographic playground. Mostly he shoots for Swan’s discerning and conservative market, as shown on her website www.arwen.co.za, but frequently he lets his considerable imagination run riot. With digital photography, many lazy practitioners simply shoot tons of images and spend a lot of time fixing their errors with Photoshop. Not Skinner; his work ethic sees him building his own sets, then spending an entire morning getting the lighting just right, whether it is bleached-out, ethereal, hard-etched, or sunk in gloom like an Old Master oil painting. His “models” are startlingly real – few of them conforming to bland, shapeless fashion stereotypes – so you will find corpulent women and hirsute men. But whatever their physique, his unerring eye draws out of them an inner essence. As an African portraitist, Skinner is aware of the traditional fear that photographs entrap the soul; like an eccentric Victorian collector with a butterfly-net, he stalks them, follows the path of their fear and captures that instance of self-recognition. True to his surname, he incisively gets under their skin. Many of these images are nudes, but not the human body idealised; here there is both an unblinking honesty and the intrigue of an inner story suggested by the moment in which the viewer finds them. Playfulness abounds, as in his ‘Fairy Tale’ series, but also a distinct undercurrent of the macabre, as with his ‘Bad Nurses’ series of nightmarish surgery. And the detournment of convention is signalled by a planned series turning political figures such as Black Panther Bobby Seale and apartheid architect HF Verwoerd inside out. Not yet published or exhibited, this demanding young man is sure to soon be recognised as one of Africa’s most exciting new portrait photographers.

Joburg film noir, His Majesty’s Building, is a whodunit written and directed by Nhlanhla Masondo. Its mystery, intrigue and suspense brings exciting new developments to the local film industry, reports Kagiso Mnisi
In the still of the night, the femme fatale (Thishiwe Ziqube) and private eye (Luthuli Dlamini) go through events of the tragedy that befell the city.
is Majesty’s Building (HMB) film features the meditative Dick Dibe, a sleuth trying to uncover the murder of Freddie, played by Jacques de Silva. Freddie is lodged in angst and his troubles are as mysterious as the city he lives in. He contemplates moving out of his parents’ home, whose detachment from his reality almost disqualifies them as his guardians. Morbid and paralysed, even in the presence of his classically beautiful, cigarette-flicking girlfriend Maria (Thishiwe Ziqubu), De Silva says he referenced a close friend, “who spends his life plotting retributions in an attempt to protect himself from hurts that haven’t and may not ever happen” for the role. This, he says, “gave insights into Freddie’s feeling of carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders”. The tragedy plays out when Freddie falls to his death from a highrise building and the trusted honcho of the force, an over-worked Lieutenant Fitzpatrick ( Justin Strydom), trailed by his two stooge officers, declares it suicide after finding a note. As a noir, the movie ventures to a place that has never been locally explored. South African film, often fixated with half-giggle comedy, has never played around with the themes so prevalent in HMB. The film, which initially entered the market through Mzansi Magic’s Bubble Gum Film Factory, currently lives on the net for purchase – well within Masondo’s sometimes left-field strategies. As a filmmaker, his origins are known by his fans, mostly film heads, through documentary works such as Don’t Kick The Tweeter and Black Box Suite. HMB’s closing sequence of a whirlwind within a desolate inner city is memorably one of those flukes that any director could wish for in their production. Masondo explains this by saying, “Whatever Joburg force was present on that night gave the documentary a good dramatic closure with little battery power to spare.” In regards to HMB’s online campaign, Masondo says, “The verdict is still out on how the film is doing with sales. Our friends at AfricaFilms.tv have yet to give us a rundown of the numbers to date,” revealing the inexactness of online movie-selling. Modern-day business philosophies never let up to preach the need for multiple platforms when delivering content. Thought leadership would say that multiple forms of delivery give the consumer more choices, equalling more revenue. However, in the wake of movies and television series enduring relentless pirating on websites such as Pirate Bay, the likes of HMB have a difficult task in achieving maximum sales breakthrough. The reality is that audiences are forever engaged in finding ways to gain access to content without spending a penny. Masondo goes on to say, “The DVD’s release will be at the end of July and the numbers on that will also take some time to come in, it being our first time to put a film online. Everything is pretty much a trialand-error exercise.” In its consistent nod to Joburg, the movie has longitudinal sweeps of the city’s buildings, evoking art deco. In his nocturnal drives going through events that led to Freddie’s demise, Dick Dibe becomes scenario architect against the backdrop of Jozi. Describing this, actor Luthuli Dlamini says, “The night’s appeal helped a great deal” in www.joburgstyle.co.za | 35

allowing him to “be immersed in the film’s universe”. Every plume he blows is a thought spared: Was it Maria, Freddie’s parents or maybe the wretched city itself ? In factual terms, HMB is situated on Commissioner Street, in the Johannesburg CBD. It was originally built in 1903, replacing the Methodist Church building that had been on that site since 1887. It was previously called His Majesty’s Theatre, and functioned as such until it was rebuilt in 1933 and renamed His Majesty’s Building. Speaking about his fascination with the city, Masondo muses, “Johannesburg is my home; I was born and have lived here all my life. I’ve always been curious of its history and I guess I’m going to tell a lot of stories about the place and the people, real or imagined.” Another of the film’s locations is Drill Hall, which regularly functions as one of the city’s www.joburgstyle.co.za | 37

most exciting enclaves, providing a myriad of activities where inner city artists collaborate. Khahliso Matela, director of Kingdom In The Sky, counts Masondo as “one of the storytellers who are tackling impediments As a noir, the movie ventures prevalent in the scene” and “a well-needed challenge to the status quo”. From the a place that has never been perspective of a score, the production was locally explored created in a way that defies period, by the team of Kennith Moyo and Nkosinathi Mathunjwa. An ambience of keys accompanies Dick on his conquest to uncover the city’s murmurs; this preoccupies the deep recesses of his mind in looping nostalgia. Joburg metropolis is often linked to themes of romanticised aspiration or drudgery; however, it exists on a completely different plane through HMB. It’s vacant and alluring. The film is almost a cynical whisper to those who know the city well, that knowledge recognises daytime sprawls just as a smokescreen engineered to distract us from the provocatively sexy secrets of the night. It’s a story that affords its makers a healthy challenge to ensure that it gets seen beyond the immediate and spoken about in the same terms as any story from a major city elsewhere on the globe.

The dream weavers W
alking around Freedom Park is an experience that evokes stories and truths about the living history of our nation, Mzansi. Freedom Park is an expanse that is situated in Pretoria (Tshwane) overlooking the city centre, the Union Buildings and the bordering railway homes. The main attraction is the //hapo museum, which exhibits a guided story journeying through South Africa’s history. It was officially opened by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe on 22 April this year. Touring around the building with Johannesburg artist, curator, and museum and exhibition designer Clive van den Berg was a real privilege; he is the mastermind behind the creations of the interactive exhibition in //hapo. The name //hapo, meaning ‘dream’, reflects a traditional Khoi and San wisdom: ‘A dream is not a dream until shared by the entire community.’ The building is a memorial of freedom and democracy in South Africa, starting from the early beginnings 3,6 billion years ago. //hapo exhibits seven different periods, or epochs, starting with the African creation story in the Earth epoch, and ending at the current period of Nation Building and Continent Building. The design inspiration behind //hapo is about telling a story based on the traumatic history of South Africa, and seeing how viewers will
interact with and respond to it. Lighting, sound, multimedia and designs are used to make //hapo an interactive and responsive space. Clive walked through the spaces of //hapo explaining the thought behind each design element. Every area and surface in //hapo is cleverly thought out and researched. The room of the Peopling epoch has a curved wall with a mantled laser cut-out metal structure mapping out the journey of stacked people across the world. The word ‘Desire’, a slave ship’s name, is visible on the wall. For this particular epoch, Clive researched archives to understand where each slave ship was travelling, their names and the length of each journey. He also read diaries of slaves to hear their stories. In this way, Clive was able to breathe life and realism into a traumatic time many years ago. An intellectual who is deeply passionate about his designs and how viewers will reflect on and relate to them, Clive is well known for his work done on heritage sites such as Constitutional Hill, the Worker’s Museum, Satyagraha House and countless others. Another Johannesburg artist, graphic designer Carina Comrie, has worked with Clive on many heritage projects for the past decade, and she played an important role in the design for //hapo. Their work complement each other; the graphics act as a ‘visual translator’ to the museum’s content, explains Carina.
Clive van den Berg and Carina Comrie are at the height of their imaginative power with the recently opened Freedom Park exhibition, says LaurenKate Bydawell. Pictures by Hugh Fraser

Walking into the museum you are confronted with bursts of significant pieces of inspiring and informative words. This illustrates how Carina uses simple and effective means of description. Clive and Carina work together to ensure that the graphics, language and means of communication work together with all visual designs. One of the boards displays the words of Nelson Mandela, epitomising the importance of Freedom Park: “The day should not be far off, when we shall have a people’s shrine, a Freedom Park, where we shall honour with all the dignity they deserve, those who endured pain so we should experience the joy of freedom.” The Earth epoch room glows red and orange with geometric plates lining the walls, closely resembling an underground cavern. Clive and I sat watching the screen depicting the African creation story through animation, enthralled by the sounds and lights that capture this significant tale through the ancient tradition of oral storytelling. Learning to always reflect on “what we remember, why we remember and the things that are missing” is important as an artist, Clive says. He says an exhibition is not simply a display of images but a “sensory experience”, one in which there is no option to be an unresponsive viewer. Freedom Park demands more of a person; it demands some sort of emotional response to each period of South Africa’s life. It evokes all the senses to absorb and reflect more on the historical significance of each moment and moments to come in our nation. Not everyone will relate to all of the history, but everyone will certainly be moved by it. More information: www.freedompark.co.za

New meets old in Joburg’s hottest cool spot. By Jo Buitendach

L
inden is a quaint suburb made up of charming brick houses and shops with a village atmosphere in the middle of Johannesburg’s concrete jungle. Well known for its schools, churches and public pool it has always been a favourite with families, but in recent years property prices have risen, with the city’s hip crowd moving in. Linden has also recently been given a shot of retail cool! Joining the suburb’s old-school stores are a bunch of new kids on the block. These include coffee and craft shops, florists, home décor and production companies – all mixed in with Linden’s old favourites like Arthur Bales haberdashery, Linden Cycle and Paputzi’s Restaurant, to name a few. Linden’s history goes back to the 1890s when it was a farm, named after one of the original owners. Later the fertile soil in the area was discovered and it became orchards of peach trees. By the 1930s many families had moved into the area, paving the way for the suburb that exists today. This area has a lot to offer. We recommend setting aside a morning to explore the suburb, taking in its fabulous
coffee shops, restaurants, and antique and second-hand shops and craft spaces.
Here are some of Linden’s best offerings
THe WHippeT Named after Josie the Whippet, the owners’ dog, this stylish spot is a must-visit. Delicious treats on offer include the Whippets Delight: a poached egg unusually but deliciously fried in tempura batter. We also recommend the yummy homemade Whippet burger that oozes mozzarella cheese, and don’t forget to finish the meal off with their famous milk tart. The Whippet also takes their coffee seriously and has even created the Linden Blend, a mix of Malawian and Costa Rican beans. That said, The Whippet isn’t only known for its delicious coffee and food, it also offers some beautifully crafted products for sale around the shop, like Consol preserve jar solar lamps (fitting, as Linden was once famous for its peaches), stylish leather bags and wallets from Cape Town brand Dark Horse, and a new addition: Babylonstoren Olive Oil and Wine. CHeese GourmeT One of the best reasons to visit Linden is definitely Cheese Gourmet. This corner shop is a Joburg highlight and offers a huge selection of over 140 boutique farm cheeses from brie to boerenkaas and everything in between. This is a great shopping experience and experts are on hand to help you choose, to give advice... and to offer samples, of course! This gem doesn’t only sell cheese, you’ll also find an array of yummy accompaniments like pickles, jams, olives, oils, tapenades, honeys and sausages. They even stock divine milk tart and chocolate chilli flavoured fudge. Cheese Gourmet is a foodie’s dream and the adjoining Cheese Café even more so. It serves up yummy breakfasts, freshly baked breads, scrumptious soups (we recommend the gnocchi, meatball and tomato variety) and of course cheese platters. And for those with a sweet tooth? Pick cheesecake, naturally. Cnr 3rd Ave and 7th Street, Linden, 011 888 5384, www.cheesegourmet.co.za LinDen CyCLe If you are cyclist, you will already know this Joburg institution. Opened 28 years ago, this shop provides the local community and experts from all over the continent with all their cycle needs. From toddlers choosing their first bike to experts needing technical help – this really is your one-stop bicycle shop with helpful staff on hand to give you all the advice you will need. 63 3rd Ave, Linden, 011 782 7313 sakHiLe: THe sTreeT-siDe fruiT seLLer Anyone who knows Linden will be familiar with Sakhile who sells naartjies, avocadoes or strawberries on the corner of Milner and 5th Ave. For the last nine years he has been around with a smile, a fist pump and a nickname for his customers. Décor
Design deity Marianne Fassler’s Joburg home is as colourful, quirky and one-of-a-kind as her creations. Textured, layered and loud, reminiscent of a Jackson Pollock, this space is just that: a masterpiece.
T
he spacious double-storey house dates from the 1930s. Despite renovations to accommodate a large family with husband Charles Bothner, as well as the on-site Leopard Frock studio, it retains many of its graceful original Art Deco period features, such as etched glass windows, plaster ceilings, wide arches and a brickwork fireplace. Though the home is rooted in and respectful of the past, the eclectic character of the interior has been shaped over the years by the couple’s myriad collections: contemporary South African art (much of it large scale), sculptures, installations and street craft; East, West and North African artefacts; once-off retro furniture pieces; sentimental items; and belongings collected on travels. The house is anything but clean-lined minimalism, and yet the strident pink, deep ochre and earthy aubergine tones blend to perfection. Textiles bear both abstract and figurative prints and display equally bright colours – be their origin Moroccan, Indian, Ghanaian or the local flea market. And, of course, leopard print – a motif synonymous with the designer’s work – can be seen on pieces throughout her home. The interior and exterior are dotted with indigenous references. You’re greeted at the double-volume www.joburgstyle.co.za | 63
Décor
The interior and exterior are dotted with indigenous references entrance by a small herd of wirework goats and sheep, while a life-sized Nguni cow sculpture stands sentinel over the porte-cochere. There’s something delightfully fitting about such an Afrocentric home being bordered on one side by the Johannesburg Zoo, where lions’ roars often punctuate the auditory landscape. These elements, in combination with the rustic boma fence that encircles the property, evoke the atmosphere of an urban kraal. Geoffrey Armstrong designed the fireplace installation and Fassler added the fairy lights and Mexican figurines in an act of embellishment that have now become part of the sculpture. The living room is a distinct area where the designer’s love affair with South African art and craft – in all its guises – is revealed. A Simon Stone floor mosaic is a striking feature and lends itself as a great conversation starter. In fact, the whole house is one! The ‘gallery passage’, which features William Kentridge artworks, leads into the fantastical Tretchikoff room. The hot-pink ‘Tretchi’ room is a shrine to the Russian-born South African artist Vladimir Tretchikoff, whose work, though classified as kitsch, has become highly collectable and sought after. Fantastical, loud, kitsch… Call it what you will, Fassler’s home is creativity personified.

E
ver wondered about the culinary delights the Queen, royals and celebrities indulge in? Stuurman is the right person to ask. He counts among his many guests the Queen of England, Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, and a host of iconic figures from around the globe. Trained in South Africa, Stuurman has gained priceless experience during his travels and worked in several world-class international hotels in London, Egypt and Chicago. He’s back on local shores, and we can’t contain our excitement. Stuurman believes that the kitchen is the heart and soul of any hotel, and that the passion of the chef and the kitchen staff translate directly into a great dining experience. His passion for food and hospitality stems from fond memories of spending school holidays and weekends in his grandmother’s kitchen, transforming modern pantry ingredients into outstanding food. In 1995, Stuurman travelled to Norway with the SA Junior Chefs Team and two years later he was recognised as the Young Chef of the Year. On his early success, Stuurman says it opened him up to the world of cuisine where he could hone his skills and take his cooking techniques to greater heights. How many people can say they’ve received a personal ‘thank you’ from Oprah for delicious food? Well, Stuurman can. This is just another feather in his impressive cap. According to Stuurman he doesn’t have a signature dish. However, he fondly recalls the first dish he perfected as a trainee: the indulgent Lobster Thermidor. Now, it’s all about Medeo at the Palazzo where he’s taken its Mediterranean-inspired menu and stunning dining experience to a grand new level, one that is on par with any top restaurant in the world. The restaurant at the Palazzo hotel provides an exclusive setting overlooking the magnificent Tuscan-styled gardens of the hotel. The menu is infused with Mediterranean flavours and dishes are presented with Chef Stuurman’s creative flair. Together with a list of especially selected South African and international wines, Medeo is an altogether sublime dining venue and experience. Medeo serves breakfast (06:30 – 11:00), lunch (12:00 – 15:00) and dinner (18:00 – 22:30), all of which can be enjoyed al fresco on the terrace.

The whisky
voyage By drinking, tasting, smelling and learning about this liquid gold you’ll embark on a fantastic taste and pairing journey. Neat, on ice or mixed with soda, there are no rules when it comes to drinking whisky, says Julia Mafcher “The interest in whisky is currently at an all-time high,” says Andy Watts, master distiller of Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky and the Three Ships range of whiskies. Watts explains that what’s driving whisky globally is the anticipation of new and established markets growing worldwide as the immense interest in this “wonderful spirit” continues to expand. “Here in South Africa, it could be the international appeal of whisky, or that it’s seen as aspirational and as a sign of ‘you’ve arrived’,” he adds. Whisky is a natural product made from only three ingredients: grains (barley, maize etc), yeast and water. It has to mature in wooden casks for a minimum period of three years where further flavours are extracted into the whisky. You get various flavours and styles of whisky, which suits the palates of a wide range of consumers. There are three types of whisky, Watts explains: malt whisky, made from malted barley and distilled in copper pot stills; grain whisky made from maize or wheat, distilled in a column still; and blended whisky, a combination of malt and grain whisky. “Although the romance of the whisky industry lies in malt whisky, it’s the blended whiskies that are by far the most popular. The lighter and softer grain whiskies mellow the full-bodied malts and create a blended whisky that appeals to a much wider audience due to the ease with which it can be enjoyed.” Watts explains that South African whiskies have a very high quality-rating standard and the number of awards achieved over the years is testament to this. “In blind tastings they are more www.joburgstyle.co.za | 77

I believe the most exciting thing is that consumers are starting to realise that the enjoyment of whisky is a journey… it’s not just one brand which is meant to be enjoyed on every occasion than standing their own against the famous and iconic international brands. International writers and bloggers are lauding the efforts being made in South Africa in broadening the whisky horizon. Whisky is very subjective and very much about what the individual enjoys.” So, what makes our whiskies unique? “We don’t have over 500 years of whiskymaking tradition like Scotland and Ireland. We are young and can be very innovative. We are still busy creating our own identity.” He adds, “The climate in South Africa is much warmer than that of our Northern Hemisphere colleagues and, although this increases the ‘angel’s share’ (that portion of whisky lost to the atmosphere during each year of maturation), the resultant whisky tends to be smoother and softer at a much younger age". "I believe the most exciting thing is that consumers are starting to realise that the enjoyment of whisky is a journey… it’s not just one brand which is meant to be enjoyed on every occasion. The increase in knowledge now makes it 78 | www.joburgstyle.co.za
easier to explain the different styles and flavour profiles of whiskies, and the desire to start the journey is leading more and more people to discover whiskies that they probably wouldn’t have considered before,” Watts says. Now, there are many people who frown upon others that mix whisky with their favourite soda. Is it really so taboo? “Absolutely not,” says Watts. “It’s about what you enjoy. Whisky can be used as the base for some amazing long-glass cocktails and sundowners. Some whiskies obviously mix better than others – these are usually the lighter styled whiskies – but the fun is in experimenting and we encourage people to find the right mix while doing it responsibly.” Karen Chaloner and Sian Neubert saw the potential of this smooth blended liquid in South Africa when they launched the Whisky Live Festival in 2003. “In the past 10 years we’ve seen a double-digit growth in the whisky market among the emerging middle class,” says Chaloner. She continues, “We wanted to create a
safe, unpretentious environment where people could taste and understand it.” Whisky Live showcases the largest collection of whisky under one roof, in the country. “We want to show people that when it comes to whisky, there are no rules. It’s a very versatile drink. The crowds are getting younger each year and visitors are usually between the ages of 25 and 35,” Chaloner adds. So the barriers have undoubtedly been broken down. From a drink that was once seen as intimidating, it’s now just as accessible to people with different tastes and varying budgets. Whisky Live Festival takes place at the University of Johannesburg, Soweto Campus from 24 to 26 October and at the Sandton Convention Centre from 6 to 8 November. See you there.

Whisky 1. JOHNNIE WALKER PLATINUM LABEL
1
Simply put, it’s the richest, most precious crafted 18-year-old Blended Scotch Whisky John Walker & Sons has ever made. The origins of Platinum Label can be traced back to the earliest days of the Walker family business when they and subsequent generations of Master Blenders crafted ‘private blends’ for favoured customers, directors of the company and for private gatherings. Inspired by the idea of these ‘private blends’ created for special occasions, Johnnie Walker Master Blender, Jim Beveridge, crafted Johnnie Walker Platinum Label. Crafted from single malt and grain whiskies, each matured for a minimum of 18 years, Johnnie Walker Platinum Label is a complex blend with deep layers of flavour that perfectly balance the diverse character of the distilleries from which it is born and the wood in which it has rested. It is a delicate smoky blend, embodying the characteristic full flavours of Johnnie Walker Scotch Whiskies, reflecting a strong, sweet and elegant Speyside style. It has a rich, dark and intense flavour that rewards those who take the time to savour it.

2. THE GLENLIVET SINGLE MALT WHISKY
The birth of the single malt that started it all… It began in the early 1800s high up in the Scottish Highlands in a remote area perfect for distilling whisky illegally, called Glenlivet. Such was the reputation of its whisky that it was King George IV‘s whisky of choice during his visit to Edinburgh in 1822. Then in 1823 an Excise Act was issued to encourage legal distilling. One man decided to seize this opportunity to achieve his vision of perfect whisky. He took the first legal license in the parish of Glenlivet in 1824. That is why to this day The Glenlivet is known as ‘The Single Malt That Started It All’.

3. SINGLETON
Most whiskies begin with the ingredients, but Singleton began with an idea: to do everything possible to make the best tasting single malt whisky in the world. Since the 19th century, the malt master for flavour and quality has specially selected the casks. This tradition lives on today and ensures the prime standing of Singleton. This is how Singleton remains Scotland’s most progressive malt whisky – perfectly balanced, naturally rich and smooth. Singleton has sweet, fruity notes and lingering, pleasurable warmth. The nose is approachable and rich, dominated by toasted hazelnuts. Then rich fruits, both stewed and dried, take over with notes of soft brown sugar. As a single malt Scotch whisky, Singleton is produced from only water and malted barley at a single distillery by batch distillation in pot stills.
4. BUNNAHABHAIN
The Bunnahabhain unchill-filtered 12-, 18- and 25-year-old single malt whiskies represent whisky in its purest form with a full depth of flavour, aroma, colour and character. The Bunnahabhain 25-year-old single malt, produced on the world-famous whisky producing island, Isle of Islay, has been awarded gold at the 2013 International Wine and Spirits Competition held in London. Applauded by the judges for its “delicate floral, dark sugar, caramel and coffee flavours with tremendous seaside character” they christened this 25-yearold as “a gorgeous gentle giant”. It’s best to enjoy this warm and welcoming single malt neat or with a dash of water to really savour its wonderful combination of flavours. 82 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

5. THREE SHIPS
The Three Ships range of whiskies has earned many firsts for the South African whisky industry. These distinctions include the first single malt, the first blend of South African and Scotch whiskies, a 100% locally blended whisky and, more recently, the first South African whisky to take the title as the World’s Best Blended Whisky at the 2012 annual Whisky Magazine’s World Whisky Awards. The Three Ships range consisting of Select, Premium Select 5 year, Bourbon Cask Finish and the limited-edition 10-year-old single malt, are all crafted by master distiller Andy Watts, who has been the distillery manager for the last 22 years.
6. BAIN’S CAPE MOUNTAIN WHISKY
Awarded World’s Best Grain Whisky at the 2013 World Whisky Awards, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky is proudly South African and the country’s first 100% single grain whisky. It’s uniquely double matured – first for three years in specially selected oak casks previously used only for bourbon, then for a further two years in a new set of ex-bourbon casks to allow for maximum interaction between the wood and spirit. The whisky is turning heads internationally by adding yet another gold award to its already impressive list of accolades. It has just taken gold at the 2013 International Wine and Spirits Competition, for the fourth consecutive year. The award also follows hot on the heels of the gold and best-in-class it received at the 2013 International Spirits Challenge in London, competing against whiskies from around the world.

Hidden gems abound along the Cape’s spectacular West Coast. Whether it’s flowers, fresh fish or heritage sites you want to see and experience, the perfect spot to do this from is Club Mykonos resort in Langebaan, Julia Mafcher discovers
T
he West Coast has gone crazy, flower crazy. At this time of year flower power is what it’s all about, and my, are they beautiful. The ideal one-stop gateway to the abundance of flowers and many other fabulous sites is Club Mykonos resort, which offers a host of onsite activities too. Set in the picturesque Langebaan Lagoon, Club Mykonos is a playful Mediterranean destination offering a variety of experiences. Over the past three years the resort has undergone a complete revamp, including upgrades to the kids’ play centre, wellness spa, dining areas, casino and conference centre. The resort has also renovated 200 of its 241 units and added an information centre for guests. Part of the resort’s investment included security upgrades, the addition of a boatyard facility, extending the private marina and refurbishing the jetties. You’ll need at least three or four days to explore the West Coast, and you’ll probably want to stay longer once you get a taste of it. There’s no rule as to where your journey along the coast should start. The West Coast National Park, just inland from Saldanha Bay’s secluded harbour, is a must visit. Thousands of seabirds roost on sheltered islands, pristine golden beaches stretch endlessly into the early morning mist, and brooding salt marshes are home to vast concentrations of migrant waders from the Northern Hemisphere. During spring the strandveld is embroidered with a tapestry of multi-coloured flowers, while in the Postberg section, antelope can be seen in a setting that’s as unique as it is idyllic. The town of Langebaan is the kite surfing capital of the West Coast. As the weather begins to warm, kite surfers from around
the world flock to the white sandy beaches. If you’re not feeling that adventurous, the town’s restaurants offer food you’ll certainly want to write home about. For the freshest fish and seafood around, make your way to the open-air Langebaan beach restaurant Die Strandloper. To the accompaniment of live traditional guitar music, meals are served in individual courses extending over a leisurely three- to four-hour period. The central focus is an open braai area where everything from black mussels in wine to ‘really strong’ coffee takes its turn. Traditional treats include fish curry, angelfish and snoek, smoked angelfish, snoek with sweet or steamed potato, plus waterblommetjiebredie. With sand underfoot and blue skies above, it’s a setting to rival all settings. Boesmanland Plaaskombuis is an informal outdoor seafood, African food and boerekos eating experience. Food is made the traditional way and every day all the dishes are prepared on open fires in big black pots and served on enamel plates. Their famous soetsuurdeeg bread is prepared with a salt and potato ferment yeast and baked in a woodfired oven – delicious! An absolute favourite for sundowners is Pearly’s restaurant, found on the town’s main beach. Also in the area you’ll find the West Coast Fossil Park, still an active dig site. Take one of the fossil tours and enjoy a fascinating journey into the past, five million years back. If you feel like a short drive, visit the lovely town of Darling. What a special place! When in Darling, a must-visit is Darling Brew’s taproom, Slow Quarter, located on the main road. This microbrewery was founded by Kevin Wood three years ago and has fast established itself as one of the more well-known craft beers in South Africa. Not wanting to be branded as simply premium,

handmade or craft beer, for that matter, they decided on slow beer. The name highlights their slow fermentation process and suggests a reason why people should choose it over mass-produced beer. Being a naturally brewed beer, Darling Brew also appeals to the more health-conscious beer drinker. Slow Quarter aims to pair each of the Darling Brew beers with a selection of inspired light meals that enhance the unique flavours found in their artisan beers. Head to Evita se Perron, a cabaret theatre started by Evita Bezuidenhout aka Pieter Dirk Uys, South Africa’s famous satirist. Something of an institution, Tannie Evita’s home comprises an 80-seater theatre, Evita se Kombuis restaurant offering a selection of boerekos with a twist, and Bambi’s Berlin bar, the only wine bar in the world to offer Evita Blanc, Evita Noir and Evita Amber wines. Don’t forget to pop into the Bapetikosweti duty-free shop or Boerassic Park, a garden in the shadow of huge trees that takes satire to a new level. After your Evita wines, why not make your way to Cloof Wine Estate? Its beautiful vineyards aside, Cloof produces intense, bold-flavoured wines from grapes grown under extreme conditions. Among its products are a Decanter 5-star award winner, a champion Shiraz and numerous airline selections. Cloof offers simply delicious daily tasting-room lunches. There’s so much to do on the West Coast, but if you’re not up for a busy schedule there are many activities to choose from right on your doorstep at Club Mykonos. There really is something for everyone. For those who like to be active on holiday, enjoy a game of tennis
on one of the three tennis courts located at the Health & Leisure Centre, brush up on you putt with a round of mini-golf, get your heart pumping on the squash court, or take part in one of the many adrenalin-rushing water sports on offer. Food is a big part of any holiday and Club Mykonos has taken care of that for you. Eateries include Bouzouki Restaurant, a Greek taverna with breathtaking views of the marina and the lagoon. They offer an à la carte menu with a variety of dishes: from salads, pastas, pizzas and burgers to seafood and tender meat. Watch the sun set with fruity cocktails in hand at the Beach Bar, always a hive of activity. Lekka By Die See is an informal beach restaurant that serves mouthwatering seafood, and pizza for those who aren’t the greatest seafood fans. After dinner head to the Mykonos Casino to try your luck at the slots and tables. Known as the place for a great family holiday, kids are catered for too. Little ones will love Club Onos clubhouse and you’ll have to drag your teens away from the games room. No more excuses. The West Coast is a gem just waiting to be explored. And you’ve got the perfect place to do it from, so go on and book your holiday.
Clockwise from above: Club Mykonos’ informal beach restaurant Lekka By Die See; Darling Brew’s selection of ales and beers; wine tasting at its best at Cloof Wine Estate; Evita Se Perron in Darling is a must visit; kite season’s coming up in Langebaan.

GALLERY MOMO CELEBRATES 10 YEARS! Congratulations are in order. Monna Mokoena’s Gallery MOMO has been successfully expanding horizons in art and mind for a decade. To mark this very special occasion, Gallery MOMO has organised a commemorative and retrospective exhibition to run from 21 November to 31 January. Leading up to the celebrations, it’s business as usual, and they are doing what they do best by proudly presenting the amazing work of Ayana V Jackson. The exhibition is titled Archival Impulse and will be up from 29 August to 7 October. Jackson interrogates a concept 98 | www.joburgstyle.co.za
she calls ‘Poverty Pornography’, contemplating photographic representation of non-European bodies dating from the turn of the 20th century through to the present day. She restages existing images as nudes in order to explore the emotional tension one feels when observing these polemic and often violent photographs. The intention being that the viewer is simultaneously drawn to and yet repulsed by the originals in a similar way they may be attracted yet potentially shamed by the naked female form. This work combines the
two in order to question the seductive language of photography and the ideas it can communicate and perpetuate. Gallery MOMO will also be participating at the Joburg Art Fair from 27 to 29 September – you’ll find them in the coveted Booth 1. Of course, no celebration is complete without good music. We can look forward to the next instalment of Jazz in the Cradle, organised by the gallery, scheduled to take place mid October. Contact 011 327 3247 or www.gallerymomo.com

JOHANNESBURG ART GALLERY (JAG) OFF THE BEATEN PATH: VIOLENCE, WOMEN, ART
8 September to 17 November Art Works for Change and JAG are working together to host a worldclass exhibition tackling one of the most pressing social issues facing South Africa and the world: gender-based violence and the continuing subjugation of women. Art Works for Change create contemporary art exhibitions around the world to address critical social and environmental issues. The aim is to harness the powers of art to promote awareness, provoke dialogue and inspire action. This is the context for Off the Beaten Path: Violence, Women and Art, a multimedia travelling contemporary art exhibition that utilises works by world-class artists to promote awareness of the root causes of violence against women; to create empathy for women’s stories; to foster a dialogue about the pervasiveness of violence against women; and to inspire the belief that women and girls can be empowered with new behavioural choices. The exhibition is curated by Randy Jayne Rosenberg. Participating artists include Marina Abramovic, Agency Volontaire, Yoko Inoue, Masami Teraoka, Hank Willis Thomas and Miwa Yanagi. ART AFRIQUE GALLERY WELCOME TO BONGISM EXHIBITION 19 September
Art Afrique Gallery, located in the Legacy Corner on the fourth level of The Da Vinci Hotel in Sandton, has a reputation for housing the ‘jewels of South African art’ – and is proud to host ‘Welcome to Bongism’, a solo exhibition, tracing the evolution and transformation of the artist Bongi Bengu. The exhibition is a four-day countdown to our annual Heritage Day celebration. Bongi’s work has been virtually absent from the art scene for the past four years and this exhibition serves as a re-launch into the art world. ‘Bongism’ is a way of thinking, a philosophy with the purpose of helping transform people and encouraging them to discover who they are. There are six elements of Bongism: healing through visual art, healing through dance and movement, documenting and researching the visual arts, teaching art to schoolchildren (this process imparts the knowledge and skills to understand and appreciate art as a form of communication) and curating exhibitions (hosting of diverse social or topical issues through active facilitation and curatorship). THE BAG FACTORY EXHIBITION AT JOBURG ART FAIR
27 to 29 September The Bag Factory is going to the Joburg Art Fair where it will be presenting selected works created during the David Koloane mentorship programme. The works will be the outcome of a project initiated by the Gauteng Provincial Government that celebrates the contribution of founding member, Dr David Koloane, to both the Bag Factory and the visual arts scene. Two young artists, Ross Passmoor and Ziyanda Majozi, have been selected to participate in a mentorship residency with permanent resident artists Pat Mautloa, Nicola Taylor and David Koloane at the Bag Factory. The work on show represents a process of exchange and creative dialogue, a process fundamental to the Bag Factory’s ethos. The Bag Factory is a leading visual-arts nonprofit based in Newtown. This collective artists’ space was founded to provide disadvantaged SA artists with subsidised studio space. The project arose out of the Thupelo workshops and was the first of its kind in South Africa. Contact 011 834 9181 or www.bagfactoryart.org.za

DOCTOR’S ORDERS
If you love to laugh, you definitely want to get to the The Fringe at Joburg Theatre for this show. SA’s Comedy Doctor, Riaad Moosa, is on stage from 20 September to 1 October. He kicked off his Doctor’s Orders World Tour with all new material on March 2013 to visit every city and tiny town in SA, as well as venturing out beyond the borders to prescribe his dose of laughter to the world. Winner of the 1st Annual South African Comic’s Choice Awards, Riaad recently flexed his comedic and dramatic acting muscles when he played the lead in the internationally acclaimed movie Material. As one of the country’s most popular and acclaimed funnymen with a unique style, he certainly seems to have the remedy for the nation’s ills at the moment: a healthy dose of laughter, straight up – hold the aspirin. CASPER GOES KAKIE
Every bit as preposterous, ridiculous and absurd as you’d expect it to be. Casper de Vries’s notoriously off-kilter sense of humour has made him one of the country’s most popular comedians. Following the incredible success of MASS Hysteria, where he performed in English, nogal, with the crème de la crème of South African’s comics, there’s been a huge demand for him to do an entire show in colloquial South African English. So if you’re eager to understand this funnyman, be sure to get a ticket and head over to the Theatre Of Marcellus at Emperors Palace from 5 to 29 September. Contact 011 928 1297

He’s crafted a spellbinding oneman show, performed to the accompaniment of noted maskanda star Matshitshi Ngema, which melds memories of his childhood spent in the heart of Zululand. Directed by Christopher John and designed by Sarah Roberts. Contact 011 832 1641/2/3

Drama for Life is bringing the sensational piece back to South Africa at the Market Theatre from 18 September to 27 October. The play explores the stories of two young South African males who travel back home and, in so doing, they journey towards a better understanding of who they are and what it really means to be a South African. Along their journey they recollect their memories – painful, awkward and funny – of childhood and teen years, in an honest and enriching tale. MY PLACE Cornuti Stella e Luna Piero Carrara talks about his Italian roots, his foodie inspirations and the latest member to the divine Cornuti brand, Stella e Luna in trendy Parkhurst
Where did the idea for Cornuti al Mare come from and why did you open in Plett in particular? My parents bought a house in Plett in 1979 and we have been holidaying there as a family ever since. In 1987 I opened Cornuti Illovo, and on a holiday in Plett in 1993 I was chatting at the dinner table with some locals and mentioned the building that now houses Cornuti al Mare, saying that it would make such a good venue for a Cornuti. Someone at the table knew the owner and we were introduced. Nineteen years later Cornuti al Mare is still there. Tell us about why you decided to come to Parkhurst. And where does the name Stella e Luna come from? I have wanted a good site in Parkhurst for a long time, so when Nick and Andrea from The Leopard approached me wanting out of Parkhurst, I did not hesitate. Stella and Luna are the second names of my two daughters. What do you think it is about Cornuti that makes people come back for more? One Sunday lunch with a bunch of friends at my parents’ house, we made pizzas in our wood-burning pizza oven – the difference was they had super-thin bases and such original toppings that were found either in the fridge or pantry. That is how it all started and I feel very comfortable saying we were the originators of thin-based pizzas with interesting toppings. Since then many have copied the concept, which has been very satisfying to see.
How does Cornuti differ from other ‘chain’ restaurants? I design and build all the Cornuti’s myself, and I find the best possible teams to help me run them. The food will never be the same in each Cornuti, but our pizzas are our foundation and strength – the rest are simply more reasons to come back again and again. When you first started out, did you think it would be such a success? And did you always want to open up more than one restaurant? The first shop in the Grayston Shopping Centre, 28 years ago, was built with the most ridiculous budget: R5,000 was the investment from each partner. It was pretty much all we could get our hands on back then. When it came to purchasing the raw materials we ran out, and George Coppin (my then partner Mark’s father) kindly lent us R2,000 to purchase stock, provided we pay him back as soon as we could. We made a profit in the first week and paid him back. We were young and having lots of fun and we made the pizzas ourselves. How does Stella e Luna differ from other Cornuti’s? Stella e Luna is small and the challenge was to create a functional jewel of a shop. As I was negotiating for the shop, the ideas started formulating in my head: the bench seating, the bar, the outside foldable deck, the pizza section, the seating around the pillar, the lighting and roof details. It all came to me quite naturally and I loved watching my vision come together so well. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 121
Shop
What is your signature dish? Cornuti is ultimately about pizza, and we do it well. What is your favourite dish? And why? At Cornuti Stella e Luna we have introduced a new concept of eating based on the Venetian version of tapas, called cicheti this is what you will find all the gondoliere, boat taxi drivers and hotel staff eating at the various cicheterie in the back streets of Venice. The idea is to sit at a table, order various small plates of different foods, and to share them with friends at the table. Start with our dips while you wait for your mains. They’re served with our super-thin pane di musica, or music bread, grisini and other in-house baked breads. My father was born in Verona and that same concept of eating happens there too; they are neighbours after all. Cicheti must be washed down with an Aperol Spritz (an orange-based aperitivo mixed with prosecco and a dash of soda). It is the right way to eat, relaxed and delicious. What do you love most about being a restaurateur? There isn’t much out there that is more satisfying than watching people having a good time in your establishment. Creating the team and environment, and the menus that get all this right, is what I enjoy doing. What is your food philosophy? Food is about flavour and that only happens with honesty – when the finest ingredients are married and combined by passionate people that strive to get it right. We are not about fine dining; we are about eating good food in a fun and casual environment. If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing? I would be building things – I love architecture and creating spaces. 122 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Humour
Joburg Celeb City From the mouth of Chester Missing
E
veryone is trying to score points out of the Marikana massacre. It’s a matter of time before Angelina Jolie tries to adopt a miner. One year afterwards, almost nothing has been done. So why are we still pretending we have ubuntu? Do poor people have ubuntu, and rich people have ADT? We have lost our political compass, my friends. On the one hand there are the lighties who don’t know better – kids who think ‘the struggle’ is a Facebook group. Kids whose big question for the ANC is: if Bonang Matheba leaves, will they still fund the SABC? Right now politics is all about the youth market. The Rainbow Nationalists (purveyors of the cult of the Rainbow Nation) call them “born frees”. The ironic thing about being a born free is it only applies to you if you are loaded. Poor people in shacks are free in the same way as free-range chickens are free. We call them free to anaesthetise our middle-class sensibilities. “Born free” should go in the same bin as “black diamond”. White marketers started calling newly middle class black people black diamonds because behind every black guy with a resource is a white guy trying to mine it. Just ask the workers at Lonmin. As a country we do have many complex, culturally inclusive spaces, but we also have many that are not. In comedy and the media the middle class of all races seem to love racist, condescending stereotypes, unless they come from an outspoken black woman called Kuli Roberts. Why? Apart from the fact that Kuli, like Bantu, has a first name that borders on hate speech. The centres of economic power culturally and structurally shut people out. How do you have a commission of enquiry into the killing of poor people that require them to pay money to be involved? It’s like when they had an international conference on HIV/AIDS in a city called Bangkok. It’s like a guy with a Breitling watch and R16 million tax bill claiming to represent the poor. It’s like an apartheid beneficiary telling black people to be non-racial. It’s sad. Chester Missing is SA’s top puppet political analyst. Follow him on twitter @chestermissing
