just can’t sit still. And I know why. As the Highveld’s purple rain pours down, I can’t stop thinking about, and looking at, those three beautiful glass statues: our Academy Awards. Oh well, if you want to get technical about it they’re called PICAs - but for us they’re the equivalent to three shiny Oscars. I couldn’t be prouder of our team; all those crazy emotional deadlines I spoke of last issue really do pay off. Fitting for our summer celebration issue, isn’t it? That’s not the only thing we’re celebrating. Just like last issue when we surprised you with a bonus Garden Route Style, this time we’re giving you the shopping bible, the Joburg Style Shopping Guide brought to you by MasterCard. It’s your passport to all things retail fabulous, and you’ll find something for all the people in your life, even that cheek-squeezing great aunt you only see once a year. So it’s that time of the year when you’ll hear the words ‘detox’, ‘diet’, and ‘summer body’ all the time. The gym is packed in Joburg with all those ‘Vaalies’ who make their way down to the beach, and I’m sure the rest of SA is no different. And then, when we all overindulge over the festive season because admit it, we all do - we rush off to the gym again and down cayenne pepper like there’s no tomorrow. When times get stressful I tend to nibble on junk food, and when I say nibble I mean scoff. Chocolate is my ultimate weakness – I will not be defeated by a giant Bar One! So I’ve been thinking of joining all those detoxers, seeing as how I’m going to Cape Town over the holidays to visit my family. And I may just have to dip my toes into the Atlantic once or twice. If you do have any tips, I’m open to suggestions. So what do we have in store for you in this issue? Party rocker Roger Goode along with DJs Stacey Norman and Mo Flava share their top summer tunes to get you in the celebratory mood. Local photographer Janeke Wissekerke shares some magnificent photos with us of people coming out of incredibly tough circumstances and making a life for themselves. And we find out how Joburg came to be the City of Gold. Then take a break from the heat and read all about my trip to chilly London. There’s certainly enough to keep you entertained in here. If you’re missing us over the holidays, don’t fear, we’ll be updating our online platforms. Our website, Facebook page and Twitter feed will keep you in the know. Have an amazing festive season and be safe. Till next time,

Stacey Norman
lights up a room. She’s smart, funny, beautiful and one of the hottest up and coming night-time radio DJs around. She broadcasts to a mass audience on Highveld 94.7 and Kfm 94.5 every weeknight from 7pm to 10pm. However, entertainment and radio wasn’t always her number-one passion. “I actually wanted to be a food technologist or chef. I picked all my school subjects according to that and loved the feeling of being in a white lab coat. I even job shadowed at a spice company.” This all changed while Stacey was still in high school, when Kfm ran a CSI project for Youth Day. “A few months ahead of the holidays they called on high school students who were interested in radio. My mom was keen for me to enter, but I was adamant I didn’t want to do it. But she wouldn’t take no for an answer and put my name forward behind my back. And as the saying goes, the rest is history,” she explains. There are many people who’ve helped Stacey along the way in the industry and who she looks up to. “Mark Pilgrim has been a huge positive influence. He’s such a humble, wonderful man, and a true gentleman. Then there’s Alex J, just because he’s Alex J and a legend in radio. I had the privilege of MCing with him a few years ago at Joburg Day and I was so nervous I thought I might be sick. Lastly, there is Anele. Her success has been phenomenal and her work ethic is off the Richter scale – amazing. She’s paved the way for female jocks and we all owe her a lot for that.” So what are Stacey’s top five party songs for the summer? “That’s easy: Girlfriend by Icono Pop, the Hardwell remix is golden, Work by Britney Spears, Roar by Katy Perry, You Make Me by Avicii, and the entire Goodluck album is magical.” Stacey will spend the holidays partying up a storm in Hermanus. “Ordinarily a quiet, seaside town… until we get there,” she says with a laugh.
Most of us
recall the 5fm Saturday Night Surgery. It was as loud, energetic and fun as the DJ behind it – Roger Goode certainly needs no introduction. Although Saturday Night Surgery has come and gone, Roger still entertains us every weeknight from 7pm to 10pm on 5fm, and he’s a force to be reckoned with in the radio and entertainment industry. It was 13 years ago when Roger cracked it in the business. “I’d been producing music on an old computer in my garage in the Western Cape with my friend Tasha Baxter, and after signing a record deal with an independent record company in Joburg, the tunes started to receive huge airplay on radio stations across the country, which pretty much kick-started the journey,” he says. It’s no surprise that his love for music goes back a long way. “When I was young, I’d watch my grandfather play piano and remember him showing me the basics of chords and harmonies. My mom used to record the Top 40 on different radio stations on her Kenwood cassette decks. She’d ring up a radio DJ named Les Right that used to host a jazz music show that we’d listen to on Sunday nights and beg him to chat to me. I think that’s where I must have developed some kind of respect for radio presenters – after watching my mom get so excited when she’d get through. Doing the sound effects at school plays was also a big thing in my life. Later on we bought an old synthesiser at an auction for next to nothing, and I continued to teach myself how to play the piano.” Young or old, black or white, Roger has an effect on people that’s hard to explain. “Radio isn’t bound by colour. We made a decision years ago to try and keep my face out of magazines or print because I’d had so many bad experiences with amateur PR companies in SA when I first started. When people meet me for the first time I almost
always get told, ‘Wow, I thought you were tall and black!’ This is a major compliment. Secondly, I know it’s become a bit of a cliché these days but it really is a great time to be doing what I am doing right now, with people from all corners of the colour spectrum listening to, and appreciating, similar music.” I had to know, from the mouth of a true party guru, what makes for a great party. “A proper sound system, easy access to the bars, a balanced guy-togirl ratio, music, DJs, bands or entertainment acts that have been properly programmed, and a night that has a pace. Quite frankly I think the days of the VIP guest lists are done and dusted,” he says. Roger has a wide taste in music and in his downtime likes to listen to classical. Yes, you heard right. “Classical music plays throughout the office and in my car. I’d like to thank Classic FM and Glenn Lewington for keeping me sane during the week! I also enjoy listening to radio stations in the USA and UK.” Born and schooled in The Mother City, Roger has called Joburg home for many years. “Cape Town is a wonderful place to go on holiday, which I do regularly, but that’s about it. I noticed this when I was about 19 years old. In terms of big business and industry, the country’s most influential city is without a doubt good old Joburg. There’s no other part of the country that’s more socially or racially integrated.” His favourite place to go out in the City of Gold? “The Baron on Main makes the best steaks in the country. I’ve been DJing at Kong in Rosebank quite a lot lately and the sound system is terrific. There’s an up and coming culture of rooftop parties that are fun, and other than that the big scene at the moment are private house parties.” Roger’s top tunes for the holiday season are: Something Good by Alt-J, Ready by B.O.B, Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High by The Arctic Monkeys, and Dusky’s Careless.

I started listening to House when I was 14.” For Mo Flava what makes a great party is a unique theme, people who want to get down, a super venue and happy music. “The aim is to have a jam!” he says. New Year is around the corner and I was eager to know what Mo Flava’s New Year’s resolutions were. “To help young talented musicians and entertainers get into the industry. I’ve developed a positive reputation and I’d like to use it to help others grow,” he says. As a photographer from Johannesburg, I find that my main inspiration is the people I encounter every day – people whose stories have crafted me into the person I am today; people who have no regrets about their past and who face their futures without fear. They have never asked for easier lives but emerged as stronger, more confident souls due to the scars they carry; their experiences embraced as an opportunity for change. This photo essay is dedicated to them and everyone who has been dealt some form of ‘lemon’ in life and have made lemonade out of it. I thank you for some of the recipes.

Chumani from Midrand is a creative child from the Eastern Cape who lost his mother to illness at the age of 18. Because of this he ran into some financial troubles and struggled to find funds for his tertiary education. Determined to further himself, he started mending clothing, offered gardening services and taught art to the local children. After a period of time he saved up enough to pay for his first year of study. He excelled and was top of his class, and received a bursary to complete his diploma in fashion design. Until two months ago he worked as a fashion design tutor before the school was closed down. Knowing his determination, this will not keep him from his goals as he believes maximising your strength comes from continued effort.
Nelly from Soweto, aka ‘Star Lady,’ is a single mom with two boys. She is a female biker that rides under the Hoodratz motorcycle club with Bonolo, her beloved Harley Davidson. After enduring her parents’ unpleasant divorce as a child, she learned to be independent and to work hard for everything in life. By living her philosophy she wishes to pass these values onto other woman in her community. She started a small all-female motorcycle group who go on regular breakfast runs and discuss issues that affect them as women. They encourage one another to empower themselves. She believes biking provides her and others with a sense of belonging while increasing their confidence as women. Riding in a group, she says, is always better than riding alone.
Cirvant from Randburg is a progressive modern-day poet, teacher and motivational speaker originally from the projects of Nashville, Tennessee. Cirvant lost his mother at the age of 12 to HIV/AIDS and suffered sexual abuse as a child. With the absence of his father, he had to grow up fast and took it upon himself to be the father figure to his sisters. It was an extensive process of self-discovery, beginning 12 years ago, that led to his book Wounded Healer – Memoirs and Poems of a Broken Boy. This journey has also managed to heal wounds that he never knew were there. Cirvant now speaks openly about his spiritual journey that healed him, hoping to create a platform for the youth to share their brokenness.

The Golden Rand The tale of how Johannesburg, South Africa’s business capital, came to be encrusted in gold. By Mmachigo Manase
Big Read
W
e may forget from time to time that Johannesburg, and by extension our country’s, economy was mothered by something precious – a metal that served as the catalyst that fast tracked the evolution of an unassuming agricultural society and made the world pay attention as we became the largest gold producer in the world. Our history, at least for the last 120 years, is very much a story of gold, with reminders everywhere, especially in Jo’burg. For example, what do Wits University, Gold Reef City, Gauteng province, our currency and Randlords have in common? Gold, of course! The Witwatersrand that Wits University is named after, is actually the stretch of land where abundant amounts of gold were finally discovered after years of small-scale gold mining elsewhere. The area boomed and developed at a very alarming rate, with towns and industries forming around this ‘endless treasure’ that had been revealed. This was the unfolding of South Africa’s own gold rush. As is characteristic of gold rushes, all sorts of people from around the world came flooding to the Witwatersrand to claim their share of the treasure. The Witwatersrand today is a curve traced by towns such as Welkom, Orkney, Springs, Benoni, Witbank and Klerksdorp. Images capturing the time of the gold rush are amazing. It is hard to believe that once upon a time the traffic on the bustling streets of Jozi was made up of ox wagons and horses. Or that some of our fancy suburbs began as small mining camps, dotted with modest tents. Our favourite amusement park, Gold Reef City, is built on an old gold mine. Its mining theme keeps the memory of that significant era in our history alive. There is even a museum dedicated to gold mining on the grounds, where one can see a gold-containing ore vein and see how real gold is poured into barrels. As far as the name Gauteng is concerned, ‘gauta’ is the Sesotho word for gold, which has origins in the Afrikaans word ‘goud’. For many years Johannesburg and its surrounding areas was called Gauteng, before the name was adopted in 1994 as the official name for the province. The name for our currency, the Rand, was coined after the Witwatersrand. Because the discovery of gold on ‘the rand’, as it is called for short, brought major economic stimulation for the country, it was only natural to name the holder of this value after the place. A lot of South Africa’s infrastructural developments were in response to the growth of the mining industry. Roads, electricity generation, water reticulation, telecommunications, housing and the development of other supportive industries came as a result of demands created by the gold mines. And what does the grand and exclusive rooftop bar Randlords in Braamfontein have to do with anything? Apart from its lovely views of the City of Gold, its name speaks volumes. The name Randlords was originally used to refer to the entrepreneurs that controlled the gold and diamond mining industries in South Africa during the rush phase, up until WW I.

Some names of prominent people are bound to come up during any discussion about our golden history. George Harrison will probably be the first, since he is the gold miner that found the main gold-bearing reef that indicated there was a whole lot more of the treasure underground. This was on a farm called Langlaagte, in the old Transvaal in 1886. Today, a park has been built at this site in honour of this discovery, and has been named after Harrison. It was declared a national monument in 1944. Two other big names come up: the Rand Refinery and the Chamber of Mines. Together, these two institutions stand out like structural pillars in the mining industry. Rand Refinery is the largest integrated single-site precious metals refining and smelting complex in the world. Among other things, they are the people who make the Krugerrands – the world’s most widely held and actively traded bullion coin. The Refinery was actually established by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa in 1920 and became independent in 1933. The Chamber of Commerce is the leading organisation that serves employers in the mining industry. Its main function is to facilitate consultation among its members about all pertinent matters, policies and initiatives. The history of Johannesburg and gold is undoubtedly rich and extraordinary, but it does also have its not so glittery elements. As is to be expected from any period of www.joburgstyle.co.za | 37

sudden and rapid change, there is a dark side to the marvellous mining boom that delivered our beloved City of Gold to us. This can be summed up broadly as this: For the industry to develop as quickly as it did and thrive (in terms of profit and gold production) a lot of money needed to be invested and a lot of manual labour was required. Investors did all they could to secure their investments, keep production costs low and make sure the human capital or labour stayed under control. Unfortunately, these led to schemes and strategies that exploited and manipulated workers, and violated human rights. One major problem that Southern African communities have had to contend with as a result of mines is that of migrant workers, which in effect broke families apart. Mines, even back then, led to other and more direct conflict, including a war. But that’s another story for another day. Rand Refinery is the largest integrated single-site precious metals refining and smelting complex in the world. www.randrefinery.com

oburg is a concrete jungle; fast paced, frantic and just a little bit on the crazy side. Living here is an adventure; one that we sometimes need a break from, to take some time out to relax and socialise with friends. For many Jozi residents, 4th Avenue Parkhurst is the place to do this. Situated in the northern suburbs of Joburg, Parkhurst is a unique place, an area that’s managed to maintain its village-like atmosphere over its 100year history. The area where Parkhurst is today was initially the most northern part of one of the city’s original farms, Braamfontein. According to passionate Parkhurst resident and history buff Tim Truluck, the suburb itself was registered in 1904 and named by the Joburg public in a newspaper competition that saw 11,000 entries. With such an unusual beginning, Parkhurst was bound to be an exceptional suburb. With so much on offer in Parkhurst, it’s difficult to choose a few must-see spaces. My advice is to spend a morning or afternoon wandering around 4th Avenue and its surrounding streets. Explore its sights and enjoy some retail therapy. End the day off with a lazy meal at one of the many divine eateries and indulge in their culinary delights.
Must-see sights in Parkhurst: JOLLY ROGER A real Joburg institution, Jolly Roger draws in the local crowd weekly. Known for tasty wood-fired pizza (their chilli sauce is a killer accompaniment) and draft beer, this is the perfect place to absorb the buzz of 4th Avenue. If you’re looking for a basic, vibey and relaxed outing, definitely give Jolly a go. Hint: Pizza is half price on Wednesday and Sunday. 10 4th Ave, Parkhurst, 011 442 3954 TINSEL Definitely one of my favourite shops in Joburg, Tinsel offers a fantastic range of contemporary jewellery. Chef Eric Hlatshwayo makes magic at the helm of Tintswalo at Waterfall’s restaurant, The Feed Room
Food
S Chicken salad with peppadew, garlic croutons, toasted sesame seeds, parmesan shavings, with honey and mustard dressing.
Situated in the heart of Kyalami, the exclusive fivestar boutique hotel Tintswalo at Waterfall offers unparalleled cuisine, exceptional luxury and wonderful service. The in-house restaurant, The Feed Room, follows on the stylish equestrian theme of the hotel. Hlatshwayo has worked at Tintswalo for six years and has certainly come a long way since his days of working in a kitchen scullery. “While working in the kitchen, I began to look at food in a way I never had before and slowly my passion and love for cuisine grew stronger. I had the privilege of working with many esteemed chefs and from them I learned about food preparation and the wide variety of flavours one can use.” Eating at The Feed Room, it’s easy to mistake your surroundings for the European countryside. So close to the city yet so removed from it, the restaurant and hotel truly is a hidden gem. Unlike any other restaurant in Johannesburg, Hlatshwayo explains what sets The Feed Room apart from the rest. “The attention to detail, service and food is what makes it different. Every meal is plated with absolute care and the service exceeds five stars. We have an excellent wine cellar with a choice to suit everyone’s pocket and a large variety, perfect for meal pairings.” It’s difficult for Hlatshwayo to pick his favourite dish; there are so many delectable delights to choose from. However, if he had to choose one it would be the divine Ostrich Fan Fillet. “There are a variety of ingredients used and the different flavours are just awesome together,” he says. Hlatshwayo doesn’t let himself get too stressed out in the kitchen and creates culinary masterpieces with his simple, yet effective, food philosophy. “Every meal served should be carefully portioned so as to satisfy the customer’s hunger and cravings. It should always be taken into consideration that meals are rich in nutrients. Every meat dish prepared must have the correct side dish accompanying it.” He certainly lives by his philosophy, and the food is all the better for it.

Food Make a meal of it: the delicious ostrich fan fillet is a healthy red meat alternative.
Ostrich fan fillet served on mashed sweet potatoes and sautéed red cabbage with a ginger and gooseberry sauce Ingredients for Fillet 200g ostrich fan fillet 150g red cabbage, sliced and sautéed 100g mashed sweet potatoes 1tbsp olive oil 1 sprig fresh rosemary Salt and pepper Ingredients for Sauce 1 cup jus 1tbsp ground ginger 100g gooseberries For more great recipes from The Feed Room,

Method • Marinate ostrich with olive oil, rosemary, salt and pepper. • Heat up a pan and ‘seal’ the ostrich to medium rare. • Plating: arrange the sweet potato on the plate and the sautéed red cabbage on the side. Then place the ostrich over the red cabbage. • Sauce: Add jus, ginger and gooseberries and bring to the boil. Make sure the jus becomes thick and not runny. Once this is achieved, pour it over the ostrich fillet and arrange gooseberries accordingly. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 73

A closer look at the origins of champagne reveals some interesting facts about the sparkly party drink. By Mmachigo Manase and Nwabisa Ngumbela
T
here are many reasons to party in life, and plenty of ways to celebrate. There is one drink, though, that is the preferred choice when it comes to marking special occasions: champagne! Popping a bottle of bubbly at any social gathering is like the proverbial ‘cherry on the cake’, a charming symbol that seals ceremonies in style. It may sound like a silly question, but what exactly is champagne? What is the difference between champagne and wine? And does one get non-alcoholic champagne? In very basic terms, champagne is a sparkly wine. However, not all bubbly wines or wines that sparkle can be called champagne. There is a point of contention where sparkling wines are concerned, which may come as a surprise to even the most avid bubbly drinker. Although many of us do it, it is technically illegal to use the terms ‘champagne’ and ‘sparkling wine’ interchangeably. Historically, champagne is a sparkling wine produced from grapes grown in the Champagne region of France, following rules that demand secondary fermentation of the wine in the bottle to create carbonation. Some use the term champagne as a generic term for sparkling wine,
76 | www.joburgstyle.co.za
but many countries reserve the term exclusively for sparkling wines that come from Champagne and are produced under the rules of the appellation. So, the difference between ordinary or ‘still’ wine and sparkling wine is that the still one is only fermented once. What gives the sparkling drink its bubbles is the second fermentation. Furthermore, real champagne is produced in a very particular way. It is a very complex blend of wine, made from three varieties of grapes, from specific vineyards throughout the Champagne region of France. The types of grapes even have names — a select type of red grapes called Pinot Noir, a second type of red grapes called Pinot Meunier and a white variety called Chardonnay. Sometimes other types of grapes from the region are allowed, but this is rare. If at this point you are tempted to say ignorance is bliss, take a deep breath and consider this: most blends of champagne are about
J Bar two thirds red grapes and a third white grapes. Only a select number of champagnes will be pure white grape (Chardonnay). These are called blanc de blancs. A blanc de noir on the other hand is made up purely of red grape (Pinot Noir or Meunier). The reason why champagne makers play with various blends of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grapes is because each kind of grape has a unique quality it brings to the final product such as aroma, body, fruitiness and elegance.
While the French wine crafters have every right to protect their sparkling wine, there are many other producers of quality bubbly in other parts of the world “Come quickly, I am tasting the stars!” are the beautiful words that are said to have come from the tongue that first tasted champagne. Although it is still unclear who the individual is that uttered these words, it seems that Dom Perignon, the monk that the high-class champagne (by Moët et Chandon) is named after, did not invent or discover sparkling wine after all. Perignon did make significant contributions to improve the quality of champagne, but an English scientist named Christopher Merret is the one that first intentionally produced sparkling wine. Apparently, and ironically, Perignon did not even like wine with bubbles in it, and all his efforts were actually with the aim of ensuring that wine does not end up being sparkly. What still remains to be said is this: while the French wine crafters from Champagne have every right to protect the distinctiveness of their sparkling wine, there are many other producers of quality bubbly in other parts of the world. South Africa also produces its fair share of the pretty party drink. Examples of established brands that come to mind are JC Le Roux, Pongracz, Graham Beck, Villiera and Boschendal. Sparkling wine producers of South Africa also use the double-fermentation method, but have come up with their own term to refer to the process: Méthode Cap Classique (MCC). The term has been used since 1992. And lastly, but definitely not least, is the question about non-alcoholic champagne. For those who want to join in the celebrations without alcohol in the mix, the answer is yes! There are non-alcoholic sparkling wines available, for example the non-alcoholic La Fleurette from the house of JC Le Roux. On a light and effervescent note, here's a quote from a man who is clearly a fan of bubbly: “Unfoiling the cork, unwinding the wire restraint… it’s the ultimate associative object. Every time you open a bottle of champagne, it's a celebration" ― David Levithan, The Lover's Dictionary. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 79

Bubbly 1. VILLIERA TRADITION BRUT NV MCC
A blend of red and white grapes displaying the full, balanced yeasty complexity synonymous with a wine made in this style. The wine retains its fresh racy zestiness that is a result of crisp acidity and rich fruit. Tradition Brut is Villiera’s Non Vintage MCC and has been a leading MCC in the South African market place since 1984. The red label indicates the use of red varieties, which was unique at that stage. Tradition was created with the help of Champagne producer Jean Louis Denois.

5. PONGRÁCZ ROSÉ
The sophisticated Méthode Cap Classique, Pongrácz Rosé, is the sheer genius of Desiderius Pongrácz, a refugee from the Hungarian uprising. His vision invigorated the viticulture in the Cape. Composed in the classic French tradition of two noble varieties, this magnificent Cap Classique evokes an air of style and sophistication, a tribute to the genius behind it. Pongrácz Rosé is made of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes which are handpicked from vineyards cooled by maritime breezes and selected for their overall quality and suitability. This Cap Classique Rosé delights the mind as much as the eye and evokes an air of romance with its delicate salmon pink hue. This is a timeless Cap Classique with great elegance and complexity.
6. DESIDERIUS PONGRÁCZ
This charismatic signature Méthode Cap Classique is a tribute to Desiderius, the virtuoso behind the Pongrácz brand. He has been described as having the gift of the “third eye”, as he had the uncanny ability to see new things in the familiar and finding the unexpected in the traditional. Witty and brilliant, whether in Hungarian, German, French, Russian, English or Afrikaans, his theories were fresh and provocative – not only on viticulture, but also music and history. He was stirred by the symphonies of Beethoven and impressed by the loyal intelligence of his dachshunds. This MCC pays homage to this scholar and wine lover with this celebrated Cap Classique that bears his name, signature and family crest. Composed entirely of the noble grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this elegant Cap Classique is crafted in the classic French tradition.

Kraken Black Spiced rocks the local music scene
Ballistic Blues, picture by Willem Welsyn.
T
he recent Rockstarter competition conceived by Rolling Stone magazine in partnership with that deeply dark monster of drink, The Kraken Black Spiced, saw two winners ultimately share the Rockstarter crown in a final showdown that was unable to separate the raw release of talent from feminist punk rockers Cortina Whiplash and young blues rock prodigies, Ballistic Blues. With more than 50 bands rocking out the competition in the lead-up to the final, the Rockstarter competition was a thunderous success that displayed a solid showing of home-grown support for the slew of pretention-free and often culture-defiant bands themselves. It seems that this rocking inaugural initiative also ultimately birthed a rapidly swelling fan-base of local rum drinkers, in keeping with the somewhat cult-like global following of this intoxicating spiced rum brand. As a relative newcomer to South African shores, The Kraken Black Spiced has indeed 84 | www.joburgstyle.co.za
had a raucous, roaring start and shown solid support of the local rock scene in a manner that’s proved an appealing attribute of this intriguing entrant to the local spirits scene. The brand’s support and sponsorship of local rock and music initiatives is also completely in keeping with the hallmark attributes for which this ‘wicked’ rum is internationally renowned. What’s more, it’s also placed rum firmly back in our tippling consciousness, and cemented The Kraken Black Spiced itself as a rum to be reckoned with. Much of this, though, relates to The Kraken’s ingenious packaging and an evocative brand story that makes it, frankly, difficult to mention the brand without marvelling at how perfectly it captures the mysterious, dark and ocean-dwelling spirit of rum. Let’s look at the bottle, for one, which features an old-style label with a gargantuan octopus-like cephalopod rising from the deep as if to attack an unsuspecting galleon. It’s designed with ‘dual grab’ handles, like

something Captain Jack Sparrow would sling over his shoulder in a drunken stagger, and takes its name from a mythical sea beast. As legend has it, the Kraken, the most fearsome of all sea monsters, lives up to 3,000 feet below the ocean surface. This dreaded behemoth has been rumoured to attack ships and drag seamen to their deaths. The largest shipment of Caribbean black-spiced rum was said to have been brought down by the Kraken – and so the rum was named thusly, as to being as dark, strong and mysterious as the squidlike ink of its namesake beast. Delicious both alone and with a mixer (think Coke or ginger beer, for example), or as part of a simple carbonated cocktail, The Kraken Black Spiced also represents the intoxicatingly dark side of rum, with its edge-of-the-world, man-eating, shipwrecking brand story, ultimately making it the ideal partner for the exhilirating Rockstarter competition. This is perhaps emphasised by the fact that the result of a night out with The Kraken Black Spiced is said to be similar to the experiences of sailors of folklore who’ve gone eye-to-eye and toe-totentacle with this legendary behemoth. They’re rumoured to be thrilled to have survived and, simultaneously, looking forward to ‘round two’! “Rockstarter was the perfect platform for bringing out the best and ‘the beast’ in SA music; we’ll continue to support and raise the bar in terms of supporting local artists and collaborations,” says Ross Shepherd, Managing Director of Kreate Brands, marketers and distributers of The Kraken Black Spiced in South Africa. The Kraken is also actively supporting a host of initiatives in the local rock community; these have included sponsorship of The Vodun Haunts ‘Release the Beast’ Gauteng tour and Dead Lucky’s ‘Sons of Lazarus’ album launch, among others. As a rum that takes no prisoners when it comes to your tastebuds, it’s seemingly doing the same for the local music scene – and we’re in full support! In fact, as the ever-growing army of Kraken supporters roar, let’s “Release the Beast!” >> To be kept up to date with everything Rockstarter and Kraken related, follow @thekrakenrumsa on Twitter.

Barefoot, sun soaked and fancy free… that’s the way holidays are spent in the easy embrace of Buffalo City country. Unpretentious, friendly and full of the promise of fun, it demands only that you wiggle your toes in its ocean, explore its fascinating history, dance in the warmth of its sunsets and relax
Local Travel
A
little confusing by name, really, the destination is so much more than one city; it’s a municipal metro collectively anchored by East London, Mdanstane, King William’s Town and provincial capital Bhisho. This untrampled stretch of the Eastern Cape gives way to pristine, playful beaches along its shoreline and, turning inland, winds its way along the mighty Buffalo River high up to the ancient forests of the Amatola Mountains. Just a short shift south of East London, a string of beach-side villages frolic along the Sunshine Coast while, up ahead, the seductive wilds of the Wild Coast await. The region is home to numerous game farms, some boasting the Big Five, and the myriad paradise flycatchers, kingfishers, hornbills and other airborne exotics make it a birdwatcher’s treat. Spectacular hikes for the active and adventurous include the Strandloper Trail, which follows the dramatic coastline between Kei Mouth and East London, and the six-day Amatola Trail. This fascinating corner of our country played a critical role in South Africa’s struggle for freedom and human dignity, and was home to many of its heroes. King William’s Town was the birthplace of Steve Biko. The Steve Biko Centre offers a museum, a library, restaurant, conference facilities as well as a commemorative garden honouring human rights activities. A hero of a different kind and an unforgettable sight, the preserved hulk of Huberta the wandering hippo is a treasured resident of King William’s Town’s Amatola Museum. In 1928 Huberta began a trek from Zululand to the Eastern Cape, capturing the attention and affection of the press and the world as she strolled. The vibrant township of Mdantsane hugs the national road that runs between King William’s Town and East London, Qumza Highway. Abuzz with the spirit of ‘ubuntu’, this effervescent township is so vast it is reputedly second only to
Soweto in size. Many political stalwarts and veterans have risen up from its dusty streets. The township also houses the second biggest shopping mall in the Eastern Cape, Mdantsane City. First, though, do yourself a favour and drench yourself in the deliciously relaxed vibes of East London. The three beautiful beaches are what it’s really all about in summer. Soft, sandy and safe, this is where holiday makers go to take big gulps of fresh ocean air, to splash and squeal as they venture further into the waves, or to adjust their sunglasses as they sneak a peek at the talent. Families can pack a picnic for Orient Beach, which offers a tidal pool and water slides, while Eastern Beach is great for long strolls and the adventurous can explore Bat Cave. The locals catch their surf at some of the world’s best spots: Nahoon Reef, Queensbury Bay, Yellow Sands and Gonubie Point. Fishing is a favourite pastime in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean (or King William’s Town’s Maden Dam). Experienced divers can explore the shipwrecks off East London’s coast, and there are nine excellent golf clubs in the area, with unbelievable views. East London’s Aquarium on the Esplanade is the oldest in South Africa and boasts more than 400 species of fish, penguins and seals. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 87

Head out to sea and experience the astonishing feeding frenzy during the famous sardine run, said to be ‘the greatest shoal on earth’, or visit Queen’s Park Zoo and Gardens, where a white lion cub is currently the star of the show. Also open daily, the 30-hectare national monument includes well-kept indigenous gardens and the zoo usually offers pony rides for children. South Africa’s only river port, East London is the bustling industrial hub of Buffalo City and home to motor giant Daimler Chrysler. Curio vendors and speciality shops along the impressive Esplanade are always popular with strolling sightseers, but for those in need of a little glitz and glamour, Hemingways Casino, Hotel and Entertainment complex is the answer. A multi-storey array of top stores provide plenty retail therapy, while the kids can catch a movie or let loose in the game arcade, and there are a variety of foodie options to choose from. East London’s Lock Street Gaol, now also a craft, curio and antique shopping complex, was South Africa’s first women’s jail in the 1800s. East London’s Museum holds hours of fascinating artefacts, including a child’s fossilised footprints found on the Nahoon Bluff and dated as humanity’s oldest at around 200 000 years, the world’s only dodo egg, and a model of the famous ‘living fossil’ fish, the coelacanth. Somehow it’s easy to feel timeless here, humbled by nature’s rugged beauty in one of Africa’s few remaining wilderness areas. Find a deck, sip cocktails with friends, sense the warm summer breeze and watch the sun sink slowly.
Interesting facts about Buffalo City: • In 1938 on a fishing expedition, museum curator Majorie Courtenay discovered the primitive-looking coelacanth, which was thought to be extinct 65 million years ago. • East London Museum houses the world’s only dodo egg. • The best Nguni beadwork collection is found in East London Museum.
In Buffalo City the buzz is all there, with great shopping, fine dining, a rocking nightlife and wonderful hotel and B&B hospitality. But, for families looking for wallet-friendly sunshine fun with their kids, or city-stressed couples wanting to kick back and rekindle romance, it’s the warmth of its small town heart that makes this region a pocket of paradise. f you can turn a blind eye to the weather, dismal for about three quarters of the year, London is an incredibly beautiful city. There’s something about it that makes you gasp (the good kind) when you arrive. When I landed in London at Heathrow Airport for the first time five years ago – for the obligatory work/holiday year abroad – I knew it was a special place. And this time around was no different. It’s a pub’s life in London and my first stop was my old haunt Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese on Fleet Street, slap bang in the middle of the city. The Cheese – as it’s known to most – is one of the oldest pubs in London and the likes of Charles Dickens and Samuel Johnson frequented the establishment. It’s rumoured that Dickens wrote his famous book A Tale of Two Cities there while having a pint. It’s dark, musty, with sawdust spread all over the floor. The reason? According to the locals, back in the day there was many a pub brawl and the sawdust was scattered on the floor to soak up the blood. Not the best image, but an authentic touch nonetheless. Public transport in London is phenomenal. The quickest way, although not the most scenic, is the ‘mind the gap’ London Underground. Probably the best way to see this city is by foot. Central London is very pedestrian friendly and if you want to stop by all the top tourist attractions, you won’t miss any this way. Remember its cold, so it’s always good to be prepared and stop by a Starbucks, Costa Coffee or Nero for a creamy cup of hot chocolate before you start gallivanting around the city. There’s a coffee shop on every corner, so staying warm is pretty simple. An exceptional piece of architecture is Westminster Abbey where many a royal affair is held – most recently the wedding of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Catherine. It’s worth a stop for some quick photos. Aah, and good ol’ Big Ben. This famous clock tower is a must see for any newbie in the city. Ben’s booming voice strikes every hour, a rather comforting sound. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 91
Right in the centre of it all, Trafalgar Square is a tourist hotspot. Have a browse through The National Gallery – it’s free, which is always a bonus. Take the perfect album snapshot on one of the impressive lion sculptures. Other free-of-charge museums to visit are the Imperial War Museum and the Natural History Museum. If you have some spare cash, cross the millennium bridge to the Tate Modern Gallery. Not typically historical, but a focal point on the city’s skyline, is the London Eye. From the top of this huge Ferris wheel you can see London in all its glory – a photo opportunity of note. Squeeze your way into SoHo – it’s buzzing all week long. This is the home of the West End as well as a variety of quirky alternative stores, award-winning restaurants and old English pubs. Pop into any of these pubs and you’ll find they serve traditional English-style fish and mushy chips. Douse them in vinegar and eat as the locals do. Now for the real shopping experience. It’s hard to put Oxford Street into words and if you’re a shopaholic like me, unashamedly so I may add, you’ll need to stand back for a while and take it all in as you climb the stairs out of Oxford Circus station. From Primark
From top: Tower Bridge – one of the city’s oldest landmarks. The London Eye – a newer, but just as special, tourist attraction. London is blessed with beautiful parks and gardens. Bottom right: My visit to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese on Fleet Street.

International Travel (think Mr Price on an epic scale) to H&M and Top Shop to Selfridges – spoilt for choice is an understatement. You can’t leave London without soaking in some royal vibes. We’ve all seen it on TV and in print but to see Buckingham Palace in front of you is a whole different ball game. It’s where the royal family has waved countless times from the balcony, where royal newlyweds have shared their first public kiss and where grand balls, of which we can only dream of, have been held. Stand outside at the right time and you may even be lucky enough to see the changing of the guards, which is a scene unlike any other. It’s the little things, those slightly off the beaten track, that make this city so wonderful: the buskers along South Bank, the red telephone boxes (yes they’re still used), the cobbled side streets and the rather dishevelled off-license cafes, open 24 hours. Shew, now I need to dunk my chocolate Hobnobs into a steaming cup of PG Tips tea. Really posh, aren’t I? Contact the experts at Flight Centre for the best value flights and packages to London. The ultimate fine wine experience B
erry Bros & Rudd is Britain’s oldest wine and spirit merchant, having traded from the same shop for over 300 years. The business was established in 1698 by the Widow Bourne at 3 St James’s Street, London. Today members of the Berry and Rudd families continue to own and manage the family-run wine merchant. By 1765, at the ‘Sign of the Coffee Mill’, Berrys not only supplied the fashionable ‘Coffee Houses’ (later to become Clubs such as Boodles and Whites), but began weighing customers on giant coffee scales. Records of notable customers’ weights, including those of Lord Byron, William Pitt and the Aga Khan, span three centuries and this is a tradition that continues to this day. Berrys first supplied wine to the British Royal family during King George III’s reign and has continued to do so until the present day. Today, Berrys holds two Royal Warrants for HM The Queen and HRH The Prince of Wales. In 1923 the company created Cutty Sark Scotch Whisky; this was the first naturallycoloured Scotch. More recently a range of fine vintage Single Malts has been developed under Berrys’ Own Selection label. Despite Berrys’ history and the continuation of the belief in traditional standards
of service and quality of care, storage and provenance, it is one of the most innovative and modern wine and spirit merchants. Today the company also has offices in Japan and Hong Kong, a Wine School and an exclusive fine dining venue in the spectacular vaulted cellars in London’s St James’s. While Berrys continues to grow and prosper, above all it appreciates that wine is meant to be enjoyed and that all wine knowledge in the world can be distilled into one simple question: “Is it good to drink?” Says chairman Simon Berry, “Being a good wine merchant is about providing the best quality possible at all levels, be that hidden gems or grand châteaux. It is about integrity, treating our customers in an honest and fair manner. It is about authority, presenting knowledgeable and respected opinions. And, vitally, it is about providing an unsurpassed level of customer service. “These four key values form the foundation of our business. At Berry Bros & Rudd, we believe that being a good wine merchant is about providing you with the ultimate fine wine experience – whether you are interested in receiving regular cases of wine for drinking now, advice on wines to lay down, or wish to attend a tasting event.” For more information: www.bbr.com

Hair Care
Keep your locks luscious Shelene Shaer from TANAZ Hair, Body & Nails shares her expert tips on how to protect your hair and scalp this summer to keep it looking like you’ve just stepped out of a salon
How do I protect my hair and scalp from sun damage? It’s something many of us forget to do in the summer, and yet protecting your hair and scalp against sun damage is just as important as protecting your skin. Not only does burning your hair deplete it of its protective oils and damage its cellular structure – making it brittle and porous – it can also trigger the production of a compound called superoxide that may cause hair follicles to switch from a growth phase to a shedding one, increasing the chance of hair loss. Sun is also bad news if you’ve got greasy hair as heat stimulates the scalp’s oil-producing glands, making it even greasier. And that’s before you consider the risk of skin cancer, which is especially dangerous on the scalp and often goes unnoticed until it’s too late. Philip Kingsley Scalp Toner, R399, will keep your scalp in good condition no matter what elements you face. If you’re bald, have thinning hair or a short crop, your best line of defence in scorching heat is a cap or sunhat, especially on beaches. But even if you’re only mildly thinning, it’s worth using proper sun protection. Opt for a transparent spray, which will be easier to apply and will give better coverage than a cream. Simply spray it over your hair and gently massage it into your scalp with your fingertips. Look for styling products containing UV filters too, as these will help protect hair
on a daily basis. L’Oreal Vitamino Color Shampoo & Conditioner, R517 & R461, is an excellent option and will also prevent colour fade. Summer hair care how-to: No matter what colour you apply to your coif, proper care is necessary to keep it vibrant. Sunlight, chlorine and salt water are hard on colour-treated hair. The further away your hair is from its natural colour, the more difficult it is to maintain it amid the environmental elements. To protect blond from turning green in a chlorinated pool, pre-soak strands in fresh water and run conditioner through them. This way the blond won’t absorb any of the chlorine. Using a sun-shielding spray seals in moisture and prevents toxins from ‘attacking’ your colour. As for summer cleansing, avoid over-shampooing colour-treated tresses, as detergent in shampoo fades colour. A lot of people are frequent gym-goers and need to wash their hair regularly, but they should shampoo every other day at the most. To freshen up on the days in between, use a dry shampoo (Kerastase Powder Bluff, R315, is an aerosol and works well). Conditioner has cleansing properties too but won’t dry and fade your hair like shampoo will – a volumising formula will leave hair looking clean and not weighed down. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 109

Bamboo is the most eco-friendly, sustainable and renewable flooring solution available on the market, with an almost ‘zero’ carbon footprint
B
amboo flooring can be used in almost any interior application, from homes and hotels, to retail outlets and commercial properties. It has greater tensile strength (resistance to being pulled apart) than steel, and it withstands compression better than concrete. Bamboo floors could be re-sanded, and re-sealed without losing its colour, providing many years of use. Bamboo flooring is non-pollutant and termite resistant, with low dust retention properties, reducing potential allergy problems – a big advantage over carpets. Warm in winter, cool in summer – providing a distinct advantage over tiles. Bamboo flooring gives you a fresh, new look compared with other flooring applications – it provides a unique, warm, flowing and natural feel to your home!

DUKES
The sister restaurant to the famed Royale Eatery in Cape Town, Dukes knows a thing or two when it comes to burgers. Located in the trendy hub of Greenside, Dukes is always filled to the brim with hipsters, young and old. They’re all about conscious cooking, get everything farm fresh and only use ingredients that are in season. What we love is that they’re very vegetarian friendly and if wheat isn’t your thing, then their wheat-free rolls will be just up your alley. Menu highlights include The Dukes, their biggest and
flagship burger. It’s a hearty beef patty with grilled pineapple, mushrooms, fried tomato, sunny-side-up egg, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, gherkins, cucumber ribbons and onion rings – a real mouthful! On the vegetarian side a must try is the Lady Marmalade. It’s made up of rosemary roast butternut patty, red onion marmalade, fried haloumi and basil pesto topped with mango chutney and cucumber ribbons. Finish off your meal with one of their double-thick gourmet milkshakes. Does chocolate ganache sound good? Mmm, delicious. Contact 011 486 0824 or www.dukesburgers.co.za

MY PLACE The Bull Run Jacques Etsebeth, executive chef of the legendary steakhouse The Bull Run in Sandton central, chats to us about his love of good food, his cooking philosophy and how he came to be where he is today
Jacques Etsebeth trained at the respected Granger Bay International Hotel School in Cape Town and joined The Bull Run in 2004. Growing up, did you know you wanted to be a chef? Ever since I was a young boy I knew I would be a chef one day. I’d stand on a chair next to the stove learning and trying to do my own thing. I started my career as a chef at the age of 13 at Timeless Way Restaurant in the small town of Fishhoek. What do you think sets The Bull Run apart from other steakhouses? That’s simple: The Bull Run brand. The ambiance and atmosphere with the rich dark wood finishes, the stock exchange theme where the waiters are known as Traders & Brokers, and the menu, done with the exchange rates’ highs, lows and volume sold. Our front-of-house team has a wealth of knowledge on all food and wine. We have our own
in-house butchery with an old-school German master butcher where we buy top-end A-grade meat and we mature it ourselves and portion it to our patrons’ specific needs. We put a lot of care in the process of purchasing the freshest ingredients daily to make our customers the best meal in Joburg. This is why The Bull Run mission statement is ‘A Wealth of Good Taste’. What would you say is your signature dish and why? It’s very hard to say as The Bull Run has a lot of regular return business and each patron has his or her favourite dish. What is your favourite dish to cook and why? I don’t have a favourite dish. My cooking is purely about my passion for all food. My favourite cuisines, however, are Thai and Indian. the hours. What I love most is the pure adrenalin rush of running an à la carte kitchen with 300 guests front of house. I love feeding their passion for food. If you weren’t a chef, what would you be doing? I have always had a thing for computers and IT, but whatever I do I’ll need to be able to spend some of my days surfing and sitting on the beach drinking gin and tonics. What is your food philosophy? If I’m wearing an apron, things are about to get crazy in the kitchen. What is the most popular dish on the menu? Jalapeño and feta fillet wrapped with prosciutto ham.

Why do you think people keep coming back for more? Great food for the money spent, combined with an exceptional crew that will go above and beyond to make your dining experience the best you’ve ever had.

Humour
An open letter to everyone, ApArt
from miley Cyrus By Anne Hirsch

emember that scene in Dirty Dancing were Baby carries a watermelon into the hotel staff party and her jaw drops to the floor when she sees the sexy dance moves, but then she’s like ‘I wanna be sexy too’ and starts grinding all up in Patrick Swayze’s face? It was Baby’s character shedding her childhood and becoming a woman, and a sexualised woman at that. The modern-day version of this scene is when Miley Cyrus twerked her way onto the VMA stage with Robin Thicke this year. For those of you still watching SABC and using a Nokia 3310, Miley is a pillar of Disney morals, a benchmark of Warner Brother ethics and a leader of Pixar principals… An opposite world! But this is all just the same Dirty Dancing, at a different date. Obviously in this analogy, Robin Thicke is Patrick Swayze and Miley is Jennifer Grey. Except in Dirty Dancing, Patrick Swayze was single, whereas Robin Thicke had a wife and two kids at home while he was gyrating all over little Hannah Montanna. But you’re right, he’s a dude and dudes can do whatever they want, so let’s just rather focus on Miley. “What is the point, Anne?” I hear you clamour. The point is this: history repeats itself. Every year, some female celebrity teen goes completely bonkers and does something sexual on stage or in the movies and the entire world gets their skinny jeans into a tangle and can’t believe society has become so banal, and what will happen to our children, our poor children. Sweet Lord of the Dance, can everyone just calm down. In the UK they have beauty pageants for 11-month-old babies. Obviously the babies don’t just do the usual crawl on the catwalk – there are hair extensions, fake baby teeth and swimsuits involved. Our urban middle-class world is flooded with pictures of half-naked celebs all the time, but does that mean our kids are going to become all “Momma, I’m gonna be a stripper” on us? No! 128 | www.joburgstyle.co.za
It means nothing has changed and nothing will. We were marrying off our 13-year-old daughters not so long ago (and still in many cultures we do) so let me give you a heads up: pretty soon some celebrity’s baby’s sonar pictures will be featured on the cover of Cosmo. Then there will be grannies showering featured in Vogue. It’s all going to get weirder and weirder. Because we’re human and we need to shock, we need to be different, we need to dance dirty. So here’s my advice: Don’t keep your kids locked in their room this summer. Let them see this weird stuff. Explain that it’s weird. Laugh at it. At least that’s what I do with my kids and they’ve turned out pretty darn healthy. Oh wait, I don’t have kids. Maybe I should stop twerking in public?
