e’re in an age where social influencing is the order of the day. We’d like to believe that the creative team behind this edition of Nubian Bride has moved beyond merely influencing and entered the realm of thought leadership. Whilst the good people at Wikipedia call the phrase an insufferable business buzzword, we would like to defend it as something that is recognised by others as innovative, authoritative and on trend. Looking at the history of bridal media in South Africa, there has never been anything that caters for your specific needs as a bridal couple. Until now that is. Along with your economic renewal has come the opportunity for cultural renewal. But, inspirational content to open your mind to what can be done while not only celebrating your love but also expressing your individuality, origin and culture has, up to now, been nonexistent. We have within these pages, however, created something special and unique by tapping into a pool of passionate talent that will answer your most important questions and give birth to your lifelong fantasies and aspirations as you approach the biggest day of your life. Never before has there been a more carefully curated
collection of African bridal content. The African bridal renaissance has begun. Our cover feature ‘African Reflections’ (pages 34 - 48) pairs one-ofa-kind couture wedding gowns by some of South Africa’s leading designers with spectacularly chic accessories and jewellery on location in the Winelands of Elgin. The combined creative prowess produced a cover look that is bold, elegantly rebellious and gutsy, but will leave your friends and family in awe as you make your entrance. Have a look at the behind-thescenes video on our newly launched website: www.nubianbride.co.za. Otto de Jager, South Africa’s king of events, continues to give life to the unusual. His floral designs and décor concepts are beyond compare (pages 104 - 107 and 126 - 129). Gone are the days when grooms rock a store-bought suit and a pair of work shoes to their wedding. In a special section dedicated to the brothers, we salute and pay tribute to your unique sense of style. We’ve covered every conceivable item on your list of things to do while you plan your wedding and absolutely loved doing it. Enjoy the read, but more importantly, enjoy the ride.

Mixed metallics Wedding décor has embraced the latest metallics trend… creating a touch of glamour by combining different shades of shimmer, in silver, gunmetal, gold and rose gold for a unique look. Lustre offers an opulent touch and adds an opulent sparkle. Make a bold statement in the bridesmaids’ dresses, add a touch of glimmer on the wedding cake or play with the shine of the cutlery.
Belle’s loves chocolate! Belle’s Patisserie founder Linda Lipschitz visited Paris’s recently, and on her return she hosted an event at her Illovo branch to launch its new summer menu. She also filled us in on Paris’ latest patisserie trend: ‘chocoroons’, delectable macarons taken to a whole new level by enveloping them in chocolate. Watch out for these at Belle’s. www.bellespatisserie.co.za

WEDDING ETIQUETTE
Family matters ll couples who are getting ready to be married need to deal with their in-laws long before they walk down the aisle. Make sure your pre-marriage counsellor covers a session on how to deal with in-laws so you can both define your relationship by setting clear and visible boundaries for all to respect. You both have to draw the line in the sand as a team and make sure your families understand who is in charge, who is getting married and why. If you don’t, you might end up with a situation where your marriage is indirectly controlled or influenced by everything your in-laws say to your partner behind your back. Make sure the boundary lines are clear; don’t compromise or leave grey areas. You have to be firm about this. This is a tough love decision for both of you to make; it has nothing to do with ‘blood is thicker than water’ or a mentality of ‘we raised you, so we know best’. Every family must have its own unique identity, which is why part of our premarital counselling sessions at Lifeworks Forum include a special meeting with our marriage counsellor and the couple, as well as both sets of in-laws. This is arranged weeks before the wedding to make sure everybody is on the same page and understands the rules of the game regarding the joining of the two.

I have yet to meet couples who are very happy and confident with their in-laws. Generally speaking, most parents find it very difficult to let go, give up control and to willingly release their child to someone else, especially when it’s time to deal with the ‘leaving, cleaving and becoming one’ part. For this reason, many
You are not marrying the in-laws, you’re marrying their daughter or son parents still insist that the wedding is actually the joining of the two families rather than that of two individuals tying the knot. To this day, most parents still try to control or live out their failed dreams through their children – even when the ‘child’ is married with three kids. They still want to call the shots however they can, because they strongly believe they know what’s best for their child. Whilst they often pretend to like their new sonor daughter-in-law, in truth, many parents don’t actually trust the new addition to the family. Usually they will overstep boundaries by intentionally leveraging on their
relationship with their child to manipulate, control or have a final say in how the new family should be run. This interference has caused many arguments between couples. In-laws choose sides unconsciously, which can bring an emotional separation between the couple. So, please, make sure to get the in-laws sorted. Remember, you are not marrying them, you’re marrying their daughter or son. Parents need to understand that newlyweds need space and time to form their identity as a couple without interference. Of course, visits are allowed, but unannounced or forced visits are a no-no. Lifeworks Forum is an NPO with a simple vision and focus to empower communities in the area of relationships, marriage, family, health and wealth. It was established in 2013 to bring sustainable transformation in these areas by providing information, resources, support and networks that married couples can use to build strong marriages, which, in turn, will impact our nation and the world at large by helping one married couple at a time. BACK TO BASICS Wedding planner Marius Barnard shows you how to use South Africa’s diverse and unique cultural heritage to create your very own personal wedding theme
PLANNING
T
hese days, African inspiration is right on trend – in weddings, in fashion, in every aspect of our lives. Bold, vibrant colours will always be part of our heritage, but ethnically inspired print now has a more modern, stylish edge. Using drama in rich jewel tones and dramatic black and white designs, the bride can reinvent her wedding and create something intrinsic of her heritage.
Styling
In planning this wedding, Marius and his team chose lots of colour, which is quintessentially African. The theme incorporates everything from dramatic black and white to metallic gold and shades of pinks and yellows. They included traditional African fabrics, like the grass mats used as under plates, to create enthralling ‘Out of Africa’ images. All a bride needs to do is add her own personality and she will have a unique African extravaganza. Be inspired, be creative, use Africa’s exquisite textures, patterns, colours and natural elements. Marius and his team used the black and white background and enhanced the look with gold foiling from the invitations. They continued this look with geometric designs on the cake and the containers on the table.
Flowers
Africa offers a magical selection of flowers and natural, earthy textures to integrate into a wedding. Select gold and textured ornaments, use indigenous flowers like proteas, pincushions and blushing brides www.nubianbride.co.za |

PLANNING (these delicate blooms are feathery and light, giving the flowers an ethereal feel). Choose colours in your theme that echo the African wilderness.
Food
There is an incredible selection of local African delicacies that can be used for wedding canapés and snacks. Get on trend: modernise and transform traditional dishes or street food into high-end gourmet snacks. Think gourmet mini bunny-chow in home-made loaves, meat straight from the braai served as a delicately plated, intricate dish or clever canapés created from familiar favourites. South African and broader African cuisine offers incredibly diverse options for wedding food… don’t be afraid to experiment.
Drink
When it comes to the drinks table, Marius suggests serving different African beers. We have so many delicious brews – and the unique and interesting bottles will create a visual masterpiece for your photographer!

Last word
This style of wedding is perfect for a contemporary bride who is not afraid of making a statement. She’s the type of bride who wants to reflect her cultural heritage in her wedding designs and even possibly her dress. African style is timeless, and these days it’s becoming very fashionable to include a touch of your heritage. Use your creative flair to give your wedding an authentic taste of African style and sophistication, however subtle. Whether you simply want a few African accents, or are intent on going all out with the African theme, there are so many exciting options to choose from.

DESIGNER STUDIO
Conquering the world Born on a farm in the Cape, wedding gown designer Kobus Dippenaar has achieved every creative’s dream – the opportunity to show his masterpieces on a worldwide stage

ou can’t be more meticulous than Kobus Dippenaar. Or more creative. One of the country’s best known couturiers, feted for his exquisite couture and bridal gowns, the Swartland-born designer is so sought after that his clients fly to the Cape from all over the country for private consultations. Kobus has been a couture designer for 30 years. His first love, he says, was architecture – clothing was his second choice. He believes that architecture is what formed him and gives his creations their balance. “I’m a technical person,” he explains. “What is important for me is the execution of the line.” Kobus initially started designing high school dance dresses for fellow students and his mother used to sew his designs. After completing military service, he studied towards a diploma in fashion design at the Cape Town Technikon. It wasn’t long before his creations were noticed; in fact, he won awards for design excellence at the J&B Met (a premier South African horse race that was frequented by socialites, more and more of whom chose to be dressed in Kobus’s creations) a number of times over the years. For 25 years, Kobus focused on designing bespoke couture garments for private clients. Then, in 2012, he launched a range of wedding gowns called Anna Georgina, in honour of his mother. For the past four years, he has continued to offer a choice of bespoke haute couture day and evening fashion under his Kobus Dippenaar label as well as his new range of fairy tale wedding gowns. The Anna Georgina bridal range is luxurious and beautifully crafted, inspired by Kobus’s notion that every woman is unique and has a beauty that deserves to be emphasised. The gowns range between R12,500 and R32,000 each. “They are beautiful and affordable,” he explains. The brand also includes accessories such as shoes and handbags. No matter whether it’s a couture piece or a wedding gown, Kobus’s creations have a signature theme, a play between masculinity and femininity, structure and fluidity. Full skirts contrast with boning and corsetry, whilst Swarovski elements shine against lines that define the figure. His wedding creations, in shades of blush, pale pink, ivory and gold, are created from light, gossamer fabrics such as silk dupioni, lace, silk charmeuse and tulle. What sets Kobus apart from other local designers is the fact that his designs are available both locally and internationally. Aside from bouttiques in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria, you will also find this artist’s creations in in the United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, France and the USA. In 2010, Kobus started showing his Anna Georgina wedding creations in the Harrogate Bridal Show and from the start, he was a roaring success. “I’d been designing for 15 years. After two hours at the Leeds show, I broke even. That’s when the penny dropped.” This year in May, Kobus moved from the Harrogate
show, where brands are featured, to the White Gallery Bridal Show in London, which is where designers are showcased. In October he showed both his brands in New York for the first time. Today, Kobus is the first South African wedding gown designer whose garments are found in more than 10 stores in the world. “And I’m growing!” he says with a smile. Although the first two years showing at Harrogate were plain sailing, the third year was a volatile one. “We have no
clients all around the world, his runway shows at local and European bridal exhibitions pull the crowds, and now he is set to conquer the US market. “As a business person, one has to follow trends; you can’t have an ego. I’m known as the ‘rugby wife’s designer’… Schalk Burger, Jan Serfontein, their wives are beautiful women. The thing is, I love dressing women. It’s not important to me that I dress wellknown women, because I believe every woman is beautiful in her own right.
His wedding gowns are created from light, gossamer fabrics such as silk dupioni, lace, silk charmeuse and tulle resources here in South Africa, so I had to import fabrics, which involved flying to the East to get all the components. There are a lot of very talented people here in South Africa. But we don’t have the resources if we want to compete with the international market.” Despite this, Kobus has succeeded, and his exquisite creations compete favourably with those of his ilk overseas. He has
And that sense of satisfaction of having accentuated a woman’s particular beauty – that is the very best feeling.” Kobus currently has a staff of 24 in his upmarket atelier in Cape Town’s city centre. Kobus’s gowns are featured on our cover and in our fashion pages 34 - 48. www.kobusdippenaar.com | www.annageorgina.co.za www.nubianbride.co.za |

Where and how did you meet? We met in our first year of varsity; we happened to be placed in the same residence. We were friends at first, and only started dating in third year. How did he propose? It was a joint decision; we agreed that Tebza would send his delegation to my family to begin lobola negotiations. No romance (haha)! Please provide a short description of your wedding day? We created a soft and romantic feel in a rustic country setting, maintaining the clean lines and amazing light offered by our venue. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? Absolutely nothing; all the chaos and drama added to the day! What was the highlight of your day? Exchanging vows; although we kept the traditional vows, Tebza said them with such intent and purpose. It was amazing! How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? Momentous. Where did you go on honeymoon? We went to Mauritius. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Where and how did you meet? We met in Johannesburg in 2006 when we both worked for the same company. The very first time we laid eyes on each other, we were conducting interviews. I was representing Human Resources and Tswang was a hiring manager at the laboratory. We became good friends at the time as our situations were very different. I relocated back to KZN and we lost contact, but managed to find each other again. We officially hit it off in April 2013 when we met for dinner when I returned to Gauteng to visit my cousin. How did he propose? It wasn’t formal or anything like that, except for confirming what I already knew. And since our situations allowed us to give it a try, that’s what we did. Please provide a short description of your wedding day? It was a beautiful long Easter weekend (26 March 2016). We held our wedding over two days; Saturday was a formal wedding at a beautiful venue at Hartbeespoort Dam called Green Leaves Country Lodge. Sunday was a traditional wedding at the groom’s residence in Oukasie, Brits. The weather was stunning, which made everything go according to plan, and the scenery was breathtaking. Our wedding was very intimate and the guests looked great as they were dressed according to the theme, which was elegant hats and heels. The colours of the day were lemon and green. We had a garden ceremony and the reception was at Green Leaves, decorated beautifully in our wedding colours. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? Absolutely www.nubianbride.co.za |

REAL WEDDINGS nothing, it was so perfect! What was the highlight of your day? When I arrived in the garden with a horse and carriage whilst guests were ululating. Another highlight was my husband’s wedding vows – they made me fall in love with him all over again! How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? It was such a beautiful feeling, indescribable. Where did you go on honeymoon? We haven’t been on our honeymoon yet. We’re planning to go to Zanzibar soon. What advice would you give to a bride-tobe? Know what you want for your special day. Don’t wait to prepare at the last minute; ask friends and family for assistance. Where and how did you meet? We met in 2012 after I moved back to Uganda after completing my bachelor’s degree in the UK. However, our families have always been close. My husband was the pageboy at my parents’ wedding, so it was fate! How did he propose? This is a moment between the two of us which we would like to keep private, but I have never been so happy and emotional in my life. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. It was a fairy tale! The theme was classy and elegant, and that’s the exact atmosphere that our wedding planner created. Everything was perfect – from the décor and food to the entertainment. We couldn’t have asked for more! If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? I would want it to never end. What was the highlight of your day? The highlight was our first dance; although there were 300 people watching us, it felt like it was just the two of us in the room. We adore Tevin Campbell, so having him perform for our first dance was a dream come true. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? There are no words to describe the feeling; we felt blessed. Where did you go on honeymoon? The Maldives and Macau. What advice would you give to a bride-tobe? Enjoy your day. Where and how did you meet? We met through work in Johannesburg. I actually interviewed him! It was all business at first because I was strictly against relationships at work, but somehow he wooed me and talked me into going on a date with him. We were friends for a year before he asked to court me. How did he propose? It was a total surprise for me. I was in the States for a few weeks when he sent me a couple of calendar invites for dinner dates because he ‘missed me’. I casually got ready for date number one. Our car arrived at the Four Seasons Hotel, Westcliff. He made reservations at The View, one of our favourite restaurants. When we finished our mains and were on dessert, fireworks started going off randomly near Zoo Lake. It was beautiful and I was in awe. He then said, “I don’t want to be your boyfriend anymore”. When I looked towards him, he had a ring out and he knelt down! Please provide a short description of your wedding day? Our wedding day was full of showers, sunshine, spectacular speeches, salsa and sundowners. We sat down and had tea together the morning of our wedding day before we split up to prepare for the ceremony. Rain was forecasted for that day, but neither of us were worried. It rained all morning and afternoon, but at the strike of three o’clock, the rain stopped. I knew the rain www.nubianbride.co.za |

was a blessing from above and that it cleared the way for a beautiful early evening wedding ceremony. At that moment I headed to the venue. I was ready to walk down the aisle. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? Nothing. It was a perfect day. On second thoughts… maybe we should have had a dress rehearsal for our first dance; Wolé kept stepping on my dress! What was the highlight of your day? Our first dance. The mood lighting was just right and it felt as if we were the only ones in the room. A close second would be us strutting into the reception with a brass band instrumental of Drake’s ‘Trophies’. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? It was surreal and amazing at the same time. I was finally married to my best friend. Where did you go on honeymoon? We went to the Seychelles – Mahe and Silhouette Islands. Stunning. What advice would you give to a bride-tobe? Get a wedding planner! They focus on all the details while you focus on the concept. Where and how did you meet? We met in September 2013 at a mutual friend’s wedding in Pietermaritzburg; I was a bridesmaid and he was one of the guests. How did he propose? He proposed at our home after we had been dating for six months. It was romantic and very special. He put candles and red roses all over the bedroom. I got home and he was standing there with the ring! Of course, I said “yes”! Please provide a short description of your wedding day Romantic, magical, elegantly intimate. Exquisite. It’s every girl’s dream. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? Absolutely nothing – everything was perfect. What was the highlight of your day? My wedding dress, the garden ceremony, walking down the aisle and seeing my husband-tobe waiting. Hearing our family and friends cheering as I walked down the aisle. Also, seeing family and friends having fun, and everything else associated with a precious celebration. We loved the décor set-up for the ceremony, the lounge and cocktail set-up for the pre-reception and the highlight, of course, our romantic reception venue. Basically the entire day was my highlight. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? Thokozani: I was overwhelmingly happy and excited as well as relaxed. Emotional when I saw my wife walking down the aisle. Where and how did you meet? We met in Luanda, Angola; we worked for the same company. Our paths crossed every day for three years; we both thought it was an impossible dream that we would ever be together, given that we come from two different parts of the world (I lived in Angola and Mike lived in South Africa and Scotland). How did he propose? Mike proposed to me in Cape Town, a memory that will stay with me forever. He made reservations at the One&Only hotel in a beautifully appointed suite on an island. We went out for the most romantic dinner/dance. I could see that he was nervous and once back at our suite, he proposed. He offered me the most stunning engagement ring, and there was a bath filled with rose petals and the finest champagne. I had no hesitation in accepting. We were both in tears and couldn’t believe our dreams had finally come true. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. We spent the previous night apart, anxious about the unpredictable Cape weather. We woke to a perfect day. I was pampered at Maison Noir Villa; Michael was spoilt at Cape Royale. I was driven to the beautiful, quaint church in Hout Bay in a vintage Rolls Royce. The wedding ceremony was incredible, enhanced by a stunning string quartet. We were then ushered to various beauty spots in Hout Bay for our photo shoot, after which we returned to Maison Noir for a pre-dinner cocktail party that seamlessly www.nubianbride.co.za |

became dinner. The two chefs and cakes by Wayde were a delight; their work was complimented by everyone. We had a fantastic live band and DJ. There weren’t many speeches – the evening was about celebrating our marriage. Lots of dancing and fun was had by all. The day ended as it started, peacefully. We went to sleep feeling truly blessed. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? We cannot fault anything and wouldn’t wish to have changed anything either. What was the highlight of your day? Standing proudly as husband and wife in the church amongst family and friends. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? It was a tearful, very emotional and joyful experience. Where did you go on honeymoon? We originally planned to visit the Seychelles, but realised that South Africa had so much to offer, so we spent several days in the sun-drenched Cape Winelands. It was a memorable honeymoon. Where and how did you meet? We met at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in 2008 when we were both students and doing our practicals. Aubrey would sometimes assist me with my schoolwork as he was my senior. We officially started dating in 2010. How did he propose? In 2013 Aubrey paid his respects to both our families by paying lobola. He wrote a letter home telling the elders when he would be coming to pay his respects. Please provide a short description of your wedding. Aubrey was calm. When I arrived at the venue, I realised that it was actually happening. My bridesmaids looked lovely; my coordinator was such a blessing. The ceremony itself was very intimate, I almost cried. Then, at the reception, our programme director made everyone laugh so hard. The first dance was special, the catering and drinks were great and the dÊcor was amazing. If you could change anything about your wedding what would it be? I wouldn’t dare change anything; the day was all we dreamed of and more. What was the highlight of your day? Where and how did you meet? We met at Varsity at a church service at chapel. Tinyiko was a worshipper there and I was in a drama ministry . How did he propose? Please provide a short description of your wedding day. It was so exciting, colourful and regal. I felt as if I was getting married to a prince. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? Nothing, everything was perfect. What was the highlight of your day? Les choses extraordinaires In this issue Flower Editor, Otto de Jager, focuses on unusual beauty where odd fruit, odd colour and odd shapes (fruit and vegetables) are used in combination to create modern classics. This is not for the classic bride, but rather the artistic, creative, adventurous spirit who sees beauty beyond the obvious
L’orange
The orange used in a classic Grecian urn, to bring back the idea of Greek and Roman mythology. Think Cicero, think Octavius and vestal vigilance.

FLOWERS
Shades of green
African cucumber mixed with lotus seed heads and fern green bottles juxta-positioned where shape, texturing and light all come into play, working in a harmonious symphony.
FLOWERS
Geometric shapes meet organic shapes
Indian pumpkin, mixed in with bromeliads, create a simple platform, but in essence, shape, colour and texture allow for the theatre that comes to play in the centrepiece.

Down to earth
African clay pots, meeting the underrated prickly pear leaf, the beauty of the Karoo is brought out of the simple texture and shape of the leaf, and adds exponentially to the gravitas of unpretentious African clay pots.
Green on green
The addition of the Chinese marrows adds yet another layer of texture and shape. Simplicity hasn’t been sacrificed with the addition of the marrow, but adds a layer of interest to the already established minimalism previously discussed.

Halloween
• A wedding over Halloween. • For the unusual bride, all things ginger, gold and orange. • The pumpkin features prominently, but its shapes and colours are robust, and can be adapted to the greater simplicity. (The photograph below demonstrates harmonious colour.) • The function of colour with the function of shape allow for this harmonious striking interpretation where flower meets vegetable.
The dance of the vegetables Cherry tomatoes, kumquat and other berries suspended in midair to create the impression of a flight of the dance. It is light, stylish, understated.

es, there’s nothing more romantic than a beach wedding. But, before you rush into arranging one, take note of all the pros and cons. Sharing your Big Day with friends and family in such a stunning setting is the stuff of dreams. Think about it. There you are, the two of you, getting married barefoot on a whitesand beach, with the palms swaying in the background and the azure sea as your perfect backdrop. And once you’ve tied the knot on the beach, the resort of your choice has all the facilities to ensure your reception is a fairy tale. From the ceremony, whether religious or not, to the flowers, food and the magical setting, not to mention hair and make-up, photographs and video, entertainment and everything else that’s involved, all is taken care of for you. All you have to do is make sure you look good on the day. But wait. Are there any snags? What if it rains, for instance? What if one of the guests arrives late? The flowers aren’t just right? Every wedding venue has its advantages and disadvantages, and no wedding is guaranteed to be accompanied by great weather. Some guests will arrive early, others won’t get there at all. But the wedding
must go on, and somehow, when it’s away from home, in a paradise destination, those problems seem to dissolve. The bigger picture is just so breathtakingly beautiful, that there’s no need to dwell on those niggling worries. First of all, when you’re at a beach destination, you’re likely to be spending more than one day there, so your wedding continues after the ceremony and the reception, possibly for up to a week. Then, let’s face it… when you’re on a tropical island, with a setting so beautiful, all you’re planning to do is have lots of fun. Resorts offer numerous facilities for an unforgettable holiday, from an array of water sports like snorkelling and windsurfing, to beauty treatments at the spa, and every day is a new adventure.

COMPETITION
O
nce in a while, in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale.” This is the comment Thato Khesa put on Nubian Bride’s Facebook page after finding out in August that he and Nomaswazi Tshabalala were finalists in the competition. And although he was referring to the fairy tale of the love of his life, this quote actually covers much more than that. These two lucky people are about to really live their fairy tale, in the form of a R1 million wedding, thanks to Nubian Bride and Bona Dea Private Estate. He told us their love story and, out of the hundreds of entrants, theirs is the one we chose. You can’t beat a relationship that spans 24 years, and includes everything from pulling her tooth out at the age of 10 to being nominated as finalists in this competition during her 28th birthday month. And now he is going to be able to give Nomaswazi the wedding she has always dreamed of. In his letter to Nubian Bride, Thato mentioned that: “This amazing wedding prize

would be the perfect puzzle piece of our love journey into this new chapter of our lives. It would be a dream come true. Please help me give Nomaswazi the wedding of her dreams.” And we are going to do just that… Thato and Nomaswazi will be getting married on 18 March 2017 and enjoying a sublime R1 million wedding in the Western Cape! This once-in-a-lifetime competition, which was brought to you exclusively by Nubian Bride and Bona Dea Private Estate, includes everything possible to make this special couple’s dream wedding a reality. There’s an exquisite wedding gown designed especially for Nomaswazi by Kobus Dippenaar; a venue that is quite spectacular at Bona Dea Private Estate, near Hermanus, in the beautiful ballroom, that includes furniture, décor, service staff and more for 160 of their friends and family; a delectable wedding cake from Krummels Sugar Art and photography by Billy-Jean Photography. The bride and bridesmaids will enjoy hair and make-up by Leoumé Vos Bridal Make-up Artistry, guests
will be pampered with favours from Uthando, and entertainment will be provided by Event Music Solutions and the Alan Cameron Jazz Duo. To top it off, the bridal couple will also enjoy a two-week holiday in five-star luxury on the V&A Waterfront.
Here is the love story that won the competition:
I would love to give the love of my life the wedding of her dreams. Nomaswazi and I have known each other for 24 years. We attended the same primary school and commuted in the same bus. I had wanted to talk to her and one day I built up the courage to say, “Hello, I saved a seat for you next to me.” She greeted me back, but didn’t come and sit next to me, so I decided the following week to ask the girl who sat next to her on the bus to move. Although a little surprised at my request, she eventually agreed. That was the beginning of our friendship and my crush. I remember taking her loose

tooth out for her on our way to school one day. At the tender age of 10 I was already love-struck. We spent a lot of time together, as not only did we go to the same school, but we also attended the same Sunday school, and lived close to each other. I then changed schools, and, although we no longer travelled on the bus together, we kept seeing each other at home and at church. One day we promised each other that we would get married and have a family when we were old enough. Then she went off to boarding school in Cape Town, and we communicated by phone and mail right through high school and tertiary education. Somehow we lost contact for a while, but then in 2013 I was visiting home (I was then living in Pretoria) and went to church. To my delight, there she was, finally all grown up and beautiful. I couldn’t find her in the parking lot, so I went to visit her at her parent’s home. That day was the start of reigniting the love we had for each other. She was back in Johannesburg, and so I moved to Johannesburg so that we could be together. A few years after that, I proposed and now I cannot wait to start this new chapter in our lives.
Thato and Nomaswazi have won…
• Hire of an exclusive venue at Bona Dea Private Estate, the ballroom, including furniture, décor, service staff for 160 guests – and more. • Flights and transfers to and from the wedding venue. • Two nights’ accommodation at Bona Dea Private Estate. • Two-week honeymoon in luxury five-star accommodation at the V&A Waterfront. • Wedding gown designed by Kobus Dippenaar (one of his gowns is

ince formidable fashion duo Quiteria Kekana and George Malelu joined forces in 2013, their creations, which include suits for men and beautiful red carpet gowns for women, have become legendary. Theirs was a real ‘rags to riches’ story, starting with them working in a Soweto backyard and culminating in the present, which sees them packing for Paris to showcase their stunning haute couture gowns at
Their gowns have graced local stars like Terry Pheto, Boity Thulo and Jessica Nkosi, and their suits are just as famous European Indian Fashion Week from 21 to 23 October. Their gowns have graced local stars and celebrities, including Terry Pheto, Boity Thulo and Jessica Nkosi, and their suits are just as famous. The two are often asked to create suits and gowns to complement each other on the red carpet. Whilst the gowns are signature haute couture, the suits, on which Quiteria and George collaborate, are stand-out items, renowned for their surprising elements (anything from a giant lapel to a too-long jacket that adds that extra cachet), their choice of fabrics and their extra edge. “More is bigger,” explains Quiteria with a smile. “That touch of surprise always gives me a thrill.” When creating a suit for a client, he and George are inspired by the colourful culture, the country’s rich history and South African men themselves. “South Africa is a colourful continent; we
represent this aspect in the colours and fabrics that we use.” Whilst they are often required to dress a couple for a red carpet occasion, the two are careful to make both outfits work as a unit, not necessarily matching in colour or design. This applies to wedding gowns and suits as well as to red carpet dressing. Wedding attire became part of Quiteria and George’s business as a direct progression from haute couture; often clients who had been dressed for special occasions asked them to create wedding gowns and suits for their Big Day. The couple, who work from a studio in Melville, create garments that marry fantasy with perfection. Their collections, which include La Madame in 2014 and The Rise of Nandi in 2015, a celebration of the Zulu nation created for Durban Fashion by the Sea, are always extraordinarily beautiful, whilst they manage to be functional at the same time. That magnificent marriage of African tradition with haute couture is what makes Quiteria and George’s exquisite creations stand out from the crowd. Whether it’s the perfectly tailored suit, or a wedding gown fit for a fairy tale, their designs have become very much a part of the South African designer tapestry. Any degree of financial difference or difficulty in a marriage or relationship can lead to stress and ultimately divorce if not appropriately addressed.

Defining differences Just as we all have different personalities, different preferences and different opinions, so can perceptions about money and how to spend it differ vastly between two people. These discussions should take place as soon as there is talk of marriage or living together. The couple should reach an agreement over key issues from the beginning in order to prevent disagreements later on. Potential pitfalls Yes, two can live as cheaply as one. But expenses have to be paid for, and it’s important to decide upfront who pays for what. This is usually fairly easy to determine, but things can go awry if one partner is retrenched or something happens that affects their ability to contribute. This can test the relationship as the other partner will have to carry the burden. Women often expect their partners to take care of key financial matters such as insurance policies (life cover, saving and retirement planning). This can have a negative impact if something goes wrong in the future. It is important for each partner to protect themselves and have their own financial plan and investments. Another important aspect to consider is to make sure you have a good marital contract in place. No one gets married thinking
about divorce, but it is important to protect yourself. From a legal perspective, marriage is a contract between two people and the contents of this contract will largely determine the financial outcome at divorce. Joint bank accounts It is important for each partner to maintain their financial independence and to have separate bank accounts. However, when it comes to household expenses, it may be wise to have a joint bank account where each partner contributes an amount that is proportionate to their salary. Who pays for what and what is paid for jointly should be discussed and decided upfront.
Expenses have to be paid for, and it’s important to decide upfront who pays for what Why insurance is so important Where there are two people working in a household, both incomes are needed to keep the standard of living intact. Consider the financial implications if one partner dies or becomes disabled or suffers a dread disease. Would the family still be able to enjoy the same lifestyle? This is where insurance fits in. At a minimum, each partner should have adequate life cover, preferably taken out by the other spouse, so that each party is protected against creditors. Other financial aspects to consider It is advisable for each partner to have their own financial plan. Women often tend to leave this up to their husbands and sometimes
the wake-up call comes too late. Only when they are faced with a crisis such as death, divorce or severe illness do some women realise the necessity of being financially independent. Both parties should maintain their financial independence when getting married, so that they will be able to cope financially, no matter what life throws at them. The financial plans should be drawn up by a qualified, professional financial adviser, who will conduct a needs analysis that takes each person’s situation and goals into account. This should include elements such as protecting income in the case of death, disability or severe illness, as well as investment and retirement planning. Also make sure that you both have a will – it may be a joint will, but consider the situation where you both pass away at the same time, particularly if you have minor children. Review your will at least once a year to make sure it is still relevant. Coping with retrenchment When the financial burden of an entire household suddenly falls on one person’s shoulders, it can be very difficult to maintain domestic harmony. One of the biggest mistakes people make when faced with this situation is to cancel their insurance policies. Remember, your policies and/or investments were taken out for a specific reason or goal and you will be short-changing yourself in the long run when the money is no longer there. Discuss your situation with your financial adviser or broker and let them advise you on possible alternatives. In difficult times, it’s important to seek advice. Speak to your financial adviser to assist you in making the most of your situation; they will ensure that your dream has a plan when you say “I do.” www.oldmutual.co.za www.nubianbride.co.za |

he run-up to that moment when you walk down the aisle can leave you feeling like you’re enduring a race, a 100m sprint against time. One minute you are engulfed by a wave of love when the man of your dreams proposes, and the next you’re feeling out of your depth, having to juggle all the facets of your already hectic life and digest the demands being served to you by family and friends. Weight loss is probably a high priority, but let’s add toned arms, a flatter tummy, a firmer booty and defined

calves to that list. Before I get ahead of myself, let me remind you of the 80:20 rule: what is important for weight loss boils down to 80 percent what you eat and 20 percent exercise. However, while exercise sits at 20 percent, for sustained bursts of those ‘happy’ hormones called endorphins, it is best to up that amount. The more exercise you do, the more fabulous you will feel. I am going to teach you how to nourish your body effectively, sustain your energy, strengthen your body, ensure flawless skin on your wedding day and beyond, and create harmony as you prepare for your wedding. You will reach your lifestyle goals and maintain your results as you manage your time, master your emotions, improve physical fitness and mental wellbeing. A lifestyle challenge is on the horizon, so keep reading, engaging and participating in the fit and fabulous fun. If you do, you can be that Nubian goddess as you move with poise and grace down the aisle. Robynn Niemack (Margaret Hirsch Business Achiever of the Year 2016 Finalist) provides wellness solutions. Her journey as a social entrepreneur and MD of Impact Africa has allowed her to develop and facilitate strategies to enhance the lives of people in rural and township areas through wellness and education. robynnniemack@gmail.com
