H ELL O . It’s been a year since I last wrote a text like this. When curating an annual festival, one would assume that after a whole year of planning, by the time the catalogue goes to print, this text would be all ready in your head. And it kind of was. I was going to write about the new urgency that so many people seem to share at the moment, for art to become tangible again, intimate, and yes, useful. Not useful as in producing results, but rather in a way love is useful, when it destroys you. And yes, I was going to use big words because there is also this need, to reclaim big words. Love. Change. Responsibility. Sense of Purpose.

However, today I find myself in a curious in-between moment. A moment of waiting. What I’m waiting for is this week’s Friday, when the court in Moscow will announce the verdict on the Pussy Riot case – the case that became the artwork of a generation. I am waiting for the verdict to be not guilty, for both the obvious humanistic reasons, but also because I really would like to hope that for an artist today to do a great work of art does not necessarily mean martyrdom and seven years in prison. Whatever the verdict is going to be, it will be followed by a cer tain process of re - evaluation; of what ar t should be in this society, of how we, as cultural producers, should operate. Of when exactly the audience become a witnesses, with legal responsibility to act accordingly. So, basically, I have no idea how the festival structure will hold af ter this Friday. You tell me. This year, the festival is built as a platform for continuous conversation. The program includes projects by guest curators that look into how art can produce intimacy, have a direct impact, reclaim meanings and function within institutional context of the festival itself. These projects touch upon different sets of questions, but all of them share the same underlying need for a change. To conclude, and to begin, here are three questions from three different conversations this summer that I could not answer: - Why are artists not leading the Occupy movement? - What does art actually do? - Why won’t you just shut up and hold me?

DO TANK is an experimental program spanning a variety of different art forms, which invites artists to act on behalf of a world with a more diverse base of values, joint responsibility and sense of community. On Sunday afternoon DO TANK program in the Festival Center features three events: Relay Interview Jacob Wren (CAN) The Montreal-based performance artist and writer Jacob Wren brings the Relay Interview conversation game to DO TANK Helsinki. It is a simple, non-hierarchical form of group conversation where anyone may ask the question they feel inclined to and get an answer from one of the other participants. Mediations at the festival Pia Lindy (FIN) During the festival Pia Lindy acts as a mediator of the DO TANK program. Together with the artists, audiences and specialists from various walks of life Lindy creates spaces and situations to reflect on the practices and ways to influence society found by the DO TANK program. Lindy, assisted by photographer Annuska Dal Maso, uses writing and documentary means to bring up a variety of interpretations and perspectives generated by the DO TANK events. Choreographer, live-art artist and writer Pia Lindy has created various performances and projects in Finland and other countries in collaboration with artists from different fields. In her artistic work she focuses strongly on improvisation and working in different environments and contexts.

The main act of the night is Aino Venna, a Finnish singersongwriter. In the autumn of 2011 a band formed around her: Kaisu Koponen (backing vocals, ukulele), Erick Michelsen (double bass), Joonatan Kotila (guitar, banjo) and Ville Pystynen (cajón). Ever since they started playing together, arrangements have become more diverse and compositions have acquired darker tones. Venna’s performance is low-key and the arrangements simple, but together they are more than the sum of their parts. Their EP Waltz to Paris was released in the spring of 2012 and received a warm welcome. On the way to the Lounge the audience is greeted by two doormen, who are each standing guard at different entrances. One door leads to a performance free area, where it is possible to relax without any stimulating activities. The other leads incomers to the erratic world of performance. The passage to each space is choreographed to guarantee that each participant’s pulse is synchronized to the situation they are about to enter. The seminar addresses the topic of conceptual sound design, specifically in the field of contemporary theatre. In what ways can sound design be defined in the performing arts? What kind of strategies can be applied when creating conceptual sound in the field of performance? Writing music narratives or designing auditive dramaturgies – how to define the score? What are the implications of ”liveness” in performance for mediated sound? Presentations held by Ross Brown (UK), Andreas Catjar (SWE), Renzo van Steenbergen (NL/EST), Heidi Lind (FIN) and more. The speakers are professionals around Europe from the field of sound, art and the performing arts. The seminar is held in co-operation with VÄS, the Department of Light and Sound Design of the Theatre Academy Helsinki.

The workshop on the 8th of November is in Finnish. The seminar on the 9th of November is in English.

This two days session invites artists and cultural operators to reflect upon artistic strategies in relation to contemporary society. Is there a need for articulated long-term strategies? Is the concept of artistic mission relevant today? What is one’s life’s work? Do we need to plan ahead, even if we know that what we do today might not be relevant tomorrow? Workshop focuses on long-term strategic planning for theatre companies and individual artists. For the seminar, we invite artists such as Dana Yahalomi (ISR), Jacob Wren (CAN) and Larry Bogad (USA) among others, to talk about their work from the strategic point of view. Additional Program

The Workshop introduces Kviss Búmm Bang’s extended life performances and working methods. The students will be led through various creative exercises. They will also introduce a project ’Downtown 24/7’, that will take place at Baltic Circle Festival 2013. The group believes that everything can and should be questioned. Their focus is on our human made society, its rules and regulations. Each of their pieces has a specific topic, something that they are passionate about, and they create a world; a social structure that participants go into and experience, based on that topic. Eva Björk Kaaber, Eva Rún Snorradóttir and Vilborg Ólafsdóttir have been working together as Kviss Búmm Bang since early 20 09. Eva Björk holds an MA in Performance Making from Goldsmith University in London, Eva Rún and Vilborg are graduates from the Iceland Academy of the Arts, The Programme of Theory & Practice within the Department of Theater and Dance. They have performed at festivals in Iceland and abroad.

Esitystaiteilija Tuija Kokkosen ja kansalaisaktivistin työpajassa jaetaan molempien toimintastrategioita ja etsitään yhdessä erilaisia yhteiskunnallisen vaikuttamisen mahdollisuuksia aktivismin ja taiteen välimaastossa. Työpajassa keskitytään inhimillisten ja ei-inhimillisten luonnon olioiden ja prosessien vuorovaikutukseen ranskalaisen ekofilosofi ja sosiologi Bruno Latourin ajattelun pohjalta. Osallistujat perehtyvät ekologisen esitystaiteen teorioihin ja käytäntöihin, ja työstävät erilaisia kokeiluesityksiä Suvilahden jättömaille ja muualle kaupunkitiloihin. Tuija Kokkonen on Helsingissä toimiva ohjaaja, kirjoittaja ja tutkija. Vuodesta 1996 lähtien hän on tehnyt paikkakohtaisia “muistioesityssarjoja” eri alojen taiteilijoista koostuvan, vaihtuvajäsenisen Maus&Orlovski-esitysyhteisön taiteellisena johtajana ja ohjaajana. Muistiot tutkivat esityksen, ympäristön, luonnon ja ajan suhteita sekä taiteen roolia ekologisten kriisien aikakaudella. Ne liikkuvat eri taiteenlajien ja eliölajien välisissä maastoissa, joissa estetiikka, etiikka ja politiikka ovat erottamattomia. In this workshop by performance artist Tuija Kokkonen and an activist both share their operating strategies and together seek different opportunities for influencing society in the middleground between activism and art. The workshop focuses on the interaction of human and non-human beings and processes of nature through the ideas of French eco-philosopher and sociologist Bruno Latour. The participants get acquainted with the theory and practice of ecological performance art and work on different experimental performances in Suvilahti and other urban spaces. Tuija Kokkonen is a director, writer and researcher based in Helsinki, Finland. Since 1996 she has worked on a series of site-specific ‘memo performances’, as the director and the artistic director of Maus&Orlovski, an ever-changing performance collective of artists from various fields. The memos are explorations on relationships between performance, environment, nature and time, and the role of art at the age of ecological crises. They chart terrains between genres of art, between species; terrains where aesthetics, ethics and politics are inseparable. Since 1999 the memos have been performed in the program of Kiasma Theatre / Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki.

The exhibition INTERIORS functions as a theatre show in five acts the period of a month. Act 1 opens with Anders Smebye’s sculptural landscape. Smebye’s sculptures involve satire, regressions and misreading’s to comment on cultural decay and decadence. A three-act performance program is followed during the coming three weeks. The final act is a presentation of Franco Berardi’s poetry. The exhibition examines the impossibility of producing intimacy within the scope of an exhibition as theatre. Choreographer Robert Steijn aims to bring back magic in life and theatre. Therefore he considers himself more as a magician. Franco Berardi works as a critic and media activist and mainly focuses on the role of the media and information technology within post-industrial capitalism. Curator Rickard Borgström is interested in the art practice which dwells on our new relation to commodities.

INTERIORS-näyttely toimii teatteriesityksenä, joka koostuu viidestä näytöksestä kuukauden aikana. Ensimmäinen näytös alkaa Smebyen veistoksellisella maisemalla. Smebyen veistokset sisältävät satiiria, regressiota ja väärinymmärryksiä kommentoidessaan kulttuurin rappiota ja dekadenssia. Kolmen näytöksen esitysohjelma tapahtuu seuraavien kolmen viikon aikana. Näyttely tutkii mahdottomuutta tuottaa intimiteettiä näyttelyssä teatterin muodossa. Koreografi Robert Steijnin tavoitteena on tuoda taika takaisin elämään ja teatteriin. Hän pitääkin itseään enemmän taikurina. Franco Berardi on pääosin median ja informaatioteknologian rooliin jälkiteollisessa kapitalismissa keskittynyt kriitikko ja media-aktivisti. The BaNd network is Baltic / Nordic contemporary performing arts platform established by eight internationally active performing art organizations: Von Krahl Theatre (EST), New Theatre Institute of Latvia, Theatre and Cinema Information and Education Centre (LIT), Q-teatteri / Baltic Circle (FIN), University of Tampere Centre for Practise as Research in Theatre (FIN), Teaterhuset AvantGarden (NOR) and Inkonst (SWE). BaNd: EXPANDED is a series of transdisciplinary ateliers for young performing arts professionals aimed at establishing long lasting, transdisciplinary international collaborations. Six ateliers or LABS, one in each of the participating countries, focuses on artists’ mobility, professional training and mentoring, creative exchange and “work in progress” presentations. Each atelier has a unique theme and working format introduced by the hosting country, following a given umbrella theme – Definition of Tomorrow. In 2012, Baltic Circle is organising an atelier on the topic of art and activism. The ambition of the BaNd network is to explore what is the theatre of future and what role it could play in our rapidly changing society. Theatre Touring Network project (TEKIJÄ) is an initiative of the Association of Finnish Theatres, Finnish Theatre Centre, Baltic Circle Festival, Produforums Vänner and Tampere University Centre for Practise as Research in Theatre in co-operation with Metropolia and Novia Universities of Applied Sciences. The main aim with the TEKIJÄ project is to raise competence in touring and co-operation in the Finnish theatre field, between the independent field and the institutions and between theatres performing in Finnish and Swedish. TEKIJÄ project also organises a pilot artist residency program in co-operation with Baltic Circle Festival in the fall 2012. Two working groups are chosen to rehearse their upcoming performances in Helsinki and at Centre for Practise as Research in Theatre in Tampere. This pilot residency program can include both technical and dramaturgical support. The artists document the rehearsal periods of the two productions that will premier during Baltic Circle Festival in November. Based on the documentation and the feedback from other interest groups, TEKIJÄ will gather a report on artist residency as a co-production model.

SAMARA is a Baltic - Nordic - European contemporar y per forming ar ts network established by eight internationally active performing art organisations: Kanuti Gildi SAAL (Estonia), Baltic Circle / Q-teatteri (Finland), Bora Bora (formerly Entré Scenen) (Denmark), Lokal Festival (Iceland), MDT (Sweden), Black Box (Norway), Kampnagel (Germany) and Nordwind Festival (Germany). Performing arts organizations in Nordic and Baltic countries join forces with their European colleagues to facilitate a place for dialogue, networking and long lasting collaboration. The aim of the network is to create new opportunities for emerging artists from Nordic and Baltic countries for co-producing and touring new works. Samara is a type of fruit with a flattened wing around the seed. The shape of a Samara enables the wind to carry the seed further away than regular seeds from the parent tree. We hope that this network will assist artists and arts practitioners in developing an extra set of wings.

In the core of Baltic Circle Festival’s mission is producing a platform for artistic creation and development of new work. Therefore, a lot is happening in studios and rehearsal rooms during each festival in connection with the public program. This year Baltic Circle co-operates with the TEKIJÄ - Theatre Touring Network Project, HIAP - Helsinki International Artist Programme and ETK - Performance Centre, with suppor t of Nordic Cultural Point, to develop further its artist-in-residence program. CONNECT CONNECT is an initiative of SPIELART Theater Festival Munich in co-operation with CA M P O – Gent, Republique – Copenhagen, Forum Freies Theater – Düsseldorf, Mercat de les Flors – Barcelona, Tanzquartier Wien – Vienna, Baltic Circle – Helsinki, Theater im Pumpenhaus – Münster and Münchner Kammerspiele to sponsor artists in the areas of theater and performance. As a result of CONNECT CONNECT project, four new productions were developed in 2011. The special challenge of the project was that the productions were developed by artists who have not previously worked together, in close collaboration with mentors from the field of performing arts. This year one of the CONNECT CONNECT production is featured in the programme of Baltic Circle Festival: Jakob & Pieter Ampe (BEL): Jake & Pete’s Reconciliation Attempt for the Disputes from the Past, mentored by Alain Platel (BEL).

GLOBAL CITY – LOCAL CITY is a network collaboration of the festivals SPIELART, Munich (GER), Baltic Circle International Theatre Festival, Helsinki (FIN), Homo Novus, Riga (LAT), August Dance Festival, Tallinn (EST), LIFT – The London International Festival of Theatre, London (UK), Bunker, Ljubljana (SLO) and Festival a/d Werf, Utrecht (NL). Associate par tner s are ALK ANTARA Festival, Lisbon (POR) and Aalto University, Pori (FI). GLOBAL CITY – LOCAL CITY is a project for the artistic exploration of the social, ecological, and political realities, and civic and social potentials in individual city quarters and of global city developments of the cities of the participating theatre and dance festivals. GLOBAL CITY – LOCAL CITY will create new performing art and other art works making visible specific issues relevant to the residents of a city quarter, and examine new perspectives and options of action for European artists and festivals. Each festival will invite one to two locally rooted or festival-related artists to take part in the project. They will form a group, which will then work at all “CityLAB workshops” in every city of the participating festivals. Out of this group, each festival later on will choose one to two artists from another European country for a residency at its festival. The objectives of these residencies will be defined by each festival. Part of the project is the development of new local city art work. The aim is to integrate artists into a wider range of European artistic exchange and collaboration, and to open a new discourse about the city and art interaction.
