KEEP YOUR
CHOMETZ BURNING SAFE!
If your Rav instructs you to burn chometz, please make sure to follow these critical safety precautions:
DO’S
DON’TS
Burn chometz items only! Join a group in the neighborhood, if possible. Use a bbq grill or fire pit, if available, and burn items on dirt, cement floors, or soil, only if there is no grill or fire pit available. Burn items in a large open area at least 25 feet away from trees, homes, and cars.
B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M
Supervise children while the fire is burning. Take every precaution necessary to avoid sparks from traveling to trees and homes, especially if conditions are windy. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby; ensure all adults and older children know how to use it.
Burn anything on grass but only on soil. Select an area where there are no bushes, tall grass, long-hanging branches, leaves, foliage, dead leaf litter, or electrical cables nearby. Burn plastic, styrofoam, glass, or aluminum foil to prevent harmful toxins from being released into the environment. Burn cans, including pressurized spray cans, or bottles of soda or sparkling water. Add lighter fluid, paint thinner, or gas to the fire. Allow children to stand close to the fire or place items in the fire. Use the PASS method for the fire extinguisher:
Saturate the fire area with water after the fire is extinguished.
Pull the pin and point the nozzle away from you
Make sure the fire is completely out and none of it is “smoking” before leaving the area.
Squeeze the lever
Aim low at the fire’s base Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side

Dear Readers, With Adar now behind us, the majestic feeling of the seder is starting to settle in. Sure there’s all the cleaning, scrubbing and nerves, but just beyond the horizon is the feeling of freedom that each of us will feel as we sit by the seder surrounded by family (and maybe a few guests this year) recounting our humble origins, subsequent suffering, and finally, redemption. We will recount in great detail how Hakadosh Baruch Hu took us out of Egypt, made us a nation, and gave us the Torah and mitzvoth. Many of us will probably discuss other parts of our mostly troubled history. The building of the Beit Hamikdash in Jerusalem, its destruction, rebuilding, and destruction again, scattering us across the corners of the globe. All this storytelling really causes our past to come alive. Indeed, beginning the first day of Nisan we remember the presents brought by the heads of the tribes in honor of the building of the Mishkan. Think about it: for thousands of years we have remembered what seems to be a one-time and obscure event, saying a special prayer and connecting with our ancestors back in the desert. One cannot speak about Pesach without mentioning our origins as one nation. Our source is as one people. Yes there were 12 different tribes, but differences were there to complement each other. Today’s attitude of “Is he one of us?” or “Did you hear what they did?” is a cover up of the Jew inside and the collective soul we all come from. When we see another Yid, we should reach into ourselves and find the point where they become our brother and part of our family. And just as a parent’s deepest joy is when the children are getting along, sharing and happy for each other. So too our Father in Heaven’s greatest pleasure is when we accept each other, respect each other and -- shall I say -- even love each other. We can then turn around to our Creator and ask, beseech and even demand that (as we say in the blessing over the second cup): “King of the universe, who has redeemed us and redeemed our fathers from Egypt, and enabled us to attain this night to eat matzah and maror. So too, G-d, our G-d and G-d of our fathers, enable us to attain other holidays and festivals that will come to us in peace with happiness in the rebuilding of Your city, and with rejoicing in Your service [in the Bet Hamikdash]… and we shall thank You with a new song for our redemption and for the deliverance of our souls. Blessed are You, G-d, who redeemed Israel.” (Interestingly, there are many halachik authorities who are of the opinion that we will recite a similar blessing on the anniversary of our future redemption.) May we merit the fulfilment of the statement in Rosh Hashanah 11a: “In [the month of] Nisan our forefathers were redeemed from Egypt and in [the month of] Nisan we will be redeemed in the future.” With blessings for a happy, healthy and joyous Pesach! Shalom

Baltimore Sun Deal Sets Up Major Test For Nonprofit News Model
THE BALTIMORE JEWISH HOME
MARCH 18, 2021
By: AFP BaltimoreJewishLife.com/Jeff Cohn
T
he idea had been circulating in Baltimore for years but gained steam with the “Save Our Sun” campaign launched last year by journalists, union and civic leaders and others. After years of staff cuts, shrinking budgets and declining readership, the Baltimore Sun finally has some good news to report about itself: a deal for a new nonprofit group to take over, and potentially revive the struggling newspaper. The plan unveiled in February comes in response to an extraordinary movement -- supported by civic and business leaders, sports figures, journalists and others -- to rescue the 184-year-old newspaper and bring it back to local ownership. The nonprofit Sunlight for All Institute, led by businessman Stewart Bainum, struck the tentative deal to
acquire the Sun and affiliated newspapers for $65 million as part of the sale of parent firm Tribune Publishing to Alden Global Capital. The agreement represents a major new test for the nonprofit model which has gained momentum in recent years in response to the deepening crisis in the sector. Newsroom employment at newspapers fell by half between 2008 and 2019, according to Pew Research Center, with more cuts reported during the pandemic. The idea had been circulating in Baltimore for years but gained steam with the “Save Our Sun” campaign launched last year by journalists, union and civic leaders and others. There was a huge amount of community support,” said Sun journalist Liz Bowie, one of those behind the campaign. The nonprofit model has been growing in recent years in the United States, and now includes some 300
news outlets, according to University of Illinois professor Brant Houston, a founder of the Institute for Nonprofit News. One hopeful sign comes from Philadelphia, where the Inquirer newspaper has been under nonprofit ownership since 2016 when owner Gerry Lenfest donated his stake to the Lenfest Institute along with a $20 million endowment. Since then, “there has been an outpouring of community financial support” for the daily with some $7 million in grants in 2020 alone, said Jim Friedlich, chief executive of the nonprofit group. The Inquirer has been able to maintain a newsroom staff of 200, far bigger than most of its peers, said Friedlich. The Philadelphia group offered informal advice to Bainum, who has not
publicly discussed his plans for the Baltimore Sun, he added. Bainum, chairman of Choice Hotels, “has become something of a student of the news business and has been inspired by and is replicating the Lenfest nonprofit model,” Friedlich said. John Schleuss, president of the NewsGuild which represents newsroom staff and helped organize Save the Sun, is optimistic that the Sun can open the door to similar deals. “I hope we can get back to publications which are accountable to the community, and not just interested in short-term profits.” Schleuss said he was disappointed that similar efforts failed at other Tribune dailies which will be taken over by a company “with a history of cutting a large number of jobs.” “It’s good that people in Baltimore stepped up,” Schleuss said. “We need that to happen all across the country.”

Kesser Torah Launches Bais Medrash
I
t’s with great Simcha, Shevach, V’Hodaah to Ha’Kodesh Baruch Hu that the Hanhala of Mesivta Kesser Torah (MKT) of Baltimore announces its plan to open a Bais Medrash for the upcoming Elul Zman. As MKT prepares for the graduation of its first class, the opening of its Bais Medrash attests to the Mossad’s exponential growth over the last four years. With S’yata Dishmaya, Reb Nosson Newman, Shlit”a, has been hired to serve as the Rosh Yeshiva of the Bais Medrash while Rav Tzvi Mordechai Feldheim, Shlit”a, continues to lead the entire Mossad. Reb Nosson is a noted Talmid Chochum with clarity and Yideos in all of Shas. He has a driving passion to provide each Bochur a feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment in his learning. The addition of a Bais Medrash will only enhance the Mesivta. Younger Bochurim will have role models with which to look up to and inspire them in their growth in Torah and Yiras Shamayim.

aryland has launched a new pre-registration system for residents to sign up to receive a COVID-19 vaccine at one of the state’s mass vaccination sites. Once pre-registered, Marylanders will be notified once an appointment is available, according to a statement released Saturday by the governor’s office. Marylanders in Phase 1 eligible populations are now able to pre-register online at covidvax.maryland. gov or by phone through the state’s COVID-19 vaccination support center at 1-855-MD-GOVAX (1-855-6346829). During the pre-registration process, residents will need to provide some personal information and go through a health screening. How The Appointment Process Works: Residents will provide their preferred method of contact and ap-
pointment scheduling: digital (text message or email), or by phone. Then, residents will receive notification when an appointment is available. When scheduling an appointment, residents will be informed of vaccine they will receive. Pre-registration is not first-come, first-serve: To help ensure vaccine equity, appointments will be released based on eligibility and supply. Pre-registration eligibility will expand in the coming weeks: An announcement will be made when pre-registration opens for Phase 2. Pre-registration does not prevent anyone from getting their vaccine elsewhere: When residents are contacted for an appointment, they will be able to indicate whether they already have received the vaccine, or are scheduled to receive one. This is a new pre-registration system: While the state has invited county health departments to provide their data for this system, this is a new system that asks a more detailed set of questions than most providers, according to the governor’s office.

What is your favorite part about Pesach? I love my mom’s cooking and the attention she pays to our children. I also enjoy the Yiddish songs my father sings at the end of the Seder. I look forward to preserving this custom. What do you do for a living? I sell insurance. A while back, a
friend suggested this to be a good fit for me and that I’d be a natural. I followed his suggestion. It’s the best advice I’ve ever taken. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with the most professional of people. I can say this about Erie Insurance, as an independent broker who can under-write with dozens of carriers, if you’re a clean, responsible driver, Erie is hands down tops in Maryland on every level. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently revealed that he intends to appoint Mossad chief Yossi Cohen to a position in the next government. Cohen is slated to end his tenure as Mossad director in June and is considered a close Netanyahu confidant. During an interview last Saturday with Channel 13, Netanyahu vowed to appoint Cohen to a political role should the current prime minister form Israel’s next government following the upcoming Knesset elections on March 23. “In the next government that I form, I will make sure to include Cohen in a position. I know how to use his skills,” asserted Netanyahu. By law, the heads of the Mossad, IDF, and Shin Bet internal security service must wait three years from their final day on the job before running for the Knesset or being appointed as a minister. Viewed as one of Netanyahu’s closest advisors, Cohen has been rumored to be a candidate for diplomatic positions that do not require a “cooling-off” period. In November, numerous reports said that Netanyahu was pressuring Cohen to replace Gilad Erdan and become Israel’s next U.S. ambassador. With the Biden administration expected to be significantly less friendly towards Israel’s interests, Netanyahu reportedly wanted Cohen to represent Israel to its most important ally. Cohen has headed the Mossad since 2016 and previously served as head of the National Security Council. Nicknamed “The Model” for his expensive suits and fastidious grooming habits, the religiously-observant
Israeli cyclist Roei Sadan was pronounced dead on Friday, less than 24 hours after being hit by a bus near the entrance to his hometown of Kibbutz Rosh Hanikra. The 39-year-old Sadan earned international fame as an adventurer who cycled around the world. The accident occurred on Thursday around 2:30 PM, when a tour bus slammed into Sadan while he was biking near Kibbutz Rosh Hanikra. Sadan was thrown into a ditch and had lost consciousness by the time an ambulance arrived. Sadan was evacuated to a hospital in Nahariah, where doctors worked frantically to save his life before he stopped breathing a day later. He was laid to rest on Sunday morning. Born in the West Bank town of Oranit, Sadan became a cycling enthusiast while trekking India after his army service. From 2007 to 2011, Sadan embarked on one of the most remarkable biking trips ever recorded, riding across mountains and deserts spanning six continents. During his world-famous bike trip, Sadan rode through 42 countries, starting in frozen Alaska and continuing all the way to the southernmost tip of Argentina. During his final four months in Australia, Sadan rode on a tandem bike with Orly Tal, a blind Israeli cyclist renowned for her adventurism.

The Week In News During his travels, Sadan became an informal Israeli ambassador, naming his bike “Emunah” and constantly defending his home country to foreigners. He would frequently appear at synagogues and Jewish communities around the world, urging his admirers to follow their dreams and “always break barriers.” Culture and Sports Minister Chili Tropper eulogized Sadan as “a man of sports and adventure with every fiber of his being. Roei was an inspiring Israeli. He served us well around the world, and mainly showed us that nothing is impossible. May he rest in peace.”
Chaos at Sa’ar Rally Participants at an event for Gideon Sa’ar’s Israeli “New Hope” political party were attacked by dozens of epithet-shouting supporters of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The fracas occurred last Saturday evening at an event for “New Hope” at
Azariah in central Israel. Sa’ar, a former Likud lawmaker who split off to found his own party earlier this year, had been preparing to speak when he was set upon by over 35 Netanyahu supporters. Shouting “traitor” and other profanities, the Netanyahu supporters hurled rocks and eggs and broke the sound system. The attackers scattered after the police were summoned. One participant was evacuated to the hospital after being knocked unconscious. New Hope party leaders blasted Netanyahu, accusing him of being aware and even ordering the attack on its campaign event. Sharing a video of the Likud supporters attacking New Hope officials, Sa’ar wrote on Facebook that he would not rest until he ousted Netanyahu from power. “Netanyahu has completely lost it. Bibi, I’m not afraid of you! In another ten days I’ll replace you,” Sa’ar wrote. “Netanyahu crossed a red line.” Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid also “strongly condemned” the brawl, condemning right-wing politicians for failing to “call out” the political violence. “The violence of Netanyahu’s

He has since recruited other disgruntled Likud members, including MKs Zvi Hauser, Ze’ev Elkin and Yoaz Hendel, in an attempt to end Netanyahu’s reign as prime minister.
Czech Republic Opens Jerusalem Embassy
The Czech Republic opened a de-facto embassy in Jerusalem in recognition that the city is, in fact, Israel’s capital.
The diplomatic office is a branch of the Czech Republic’s official embassy in Tel Aviv, which will remain in the coastal city. However, the majority of employees from the Czech Foreign Ministry will now work out of the Jerusalem site and describe it as the de-facto embassy. The site was inaugurated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday attended by Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis and Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi. In his remarks, Babis highlighted the significance of the move, stressing that his country viewed Jerusalem as Israel’s legitimate capitol. “We keep our promise,” said Babis while standing opposite the new embassy in Jerusalem’s Talbieh neighborhood. “The Czech Republic will have a full-fledged diplomatic mission here in Jerusalem.” “It will deal with a lot – ranging from politics, economic cooperation, consular agenda, and other topics. It will have a permanent staff and work under the lead of our embassy in Tel Aviv.” Ashkenazi responded by thanking

The Week In News Babis and the Czech Republic for recognizing the importance Jerusalem plays for Judaism and the State of Israel. “The changes in the Middle East should be based on a recognition of the reality and historical truth that the city of Jerusalem has been the spiritual center of the Jewish people and its capital for over 3000 years, and the capital of Israel,” said Ashkenazi. Ashkenaz also thanked the Czech government for recently adopting the definition of IHRA anti-Semitism. The Czech Parliament’s lower house had approved a resolution in 2019 adopting the international IHRA working definition of anti-Semitism, allowing law enforcement to prosecute hate crimes more effectively. The definition defines anti-Semitism as “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews” and includes attacks against Jewish religious and community institutions. The Czech Republic is the latest country to follow the U.S.’s relocation of its diplomatic offices to Jerusalem. Since former President Donald Trump moved the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem in 2018, Guatemala, Papua New Guinea, and now the Czech Republic have followed suit. A handful of others have promised to do so as well, including Honduras, Brazil, and Serbia, but have not yet made the move.
Tensions with Jordan Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shuttered Israeli airspace to flights to and from Jordan after the Kingdom torpedoed his scheduled visit to the United Arab Emirates. Netanyahu had been slated to make his first-ever visit to the United Arab Emirates last Thursday when Jordan banned him from crossing its airspace. The ban followed a dust-up between Israeli border guards and Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah a day earlier that saw the monarch turned away after attempting to enter Israeli with too many bodyguards. In retaliation, Netanyahu shuttered Israeli airspace to Jordan-bound flights, ordering the Transportation Ministry to close the skies immedi-
ately. Netanyahu issued the order without first consulting with the Foreign and Defense Ministries, which enjoy a close working relationship with Jordan. Netanyahu’s comprehensive flight ban is unprecedented and violates the 1994 Peace Agreement between the two countries. The directive was strongly opposed by the Transportation Office, who warned that it would cause international airlines significant financial damage and harm Israeli-Jordan ties irreparably. According to reports, Transportation Ministry officials slow-walked Netanyahu’s order, hoping that the government would block it before it could be enacted. Two hours after it was enacted, Netanyahu directed that the skies be reopened to Jordanian flights following pressure from the IDF. No Jordan-bound flights had been turned back during the two hours the ban was in effect, avoiding a significant diplomatic crisis experts say may have scrapped the Israeli-Jordanian peace agreement. On Wednesday, Israel had prevented Crown Prince Hussein from visiting the Temple Mount after he arrived at the border crossing with more than the number of agreed-upon bodyguards. While Israel allowed up to 10 security officials to accompany the royal, he insisted on arriving with a protective delegation consisting of over 30 people.
Kosovo Opens Jerusalem Embassy
Kosovo’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday it has formally opened its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem. The move was made after the establishment of diplomatic ties with Israel on February 1 and a Kosovo-Serbia summit held at the White House in September. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs

and Diaspora announces that the Kosovo Embassy in the State of Israel, with headquarters in Jerusalem, officially has been opened,” said the statement. Kosovo is the first European country and Muslim-majority one to establish its embassy in Jerusalem, following the U.S. and Guatemala. Kosovo’s decision was taken when outgoing Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti met with Serb President Aleksandar Vucic at the White House in September with then-U.S. president Donald Trump. “Setting of the plaques and the state flag at the Kosovo Embassy in Israel reflects the Government of Kosovo’s commitment to comply with the pledge for establishing the diplomatic mission to Jerusalem,” it said. Albin Kurti, prime minister-designate, has found himself in a difficult diplomatic position ahead of taking up his post after pressure from Turkey, a close ally of the new Western Balkan country, to change its mind about the Jerusalem location. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned Kosovo that the move could damage future relations with his country.

Dead Sea Scroll Discovery This week, the Israel Antiquities Authority unveiled the first Bible scroll fragments found in decades and numerous other dazzling artifacts from the “Cave of Horror” above the Dead Sea. Among the discoveries was a huge, 10,500-year-old complete woven basket, the oldest in the world. It’s been 60 years since other major scroll finds, and archeologists are excited that the discoveries this week could hold promise of what can be discovered in the other 20 caves.
500 caves in the Judean Desert in an unprecedentedly wide-ranging and physically daring operation involving rappelling down rockfaces and setting up work camps on sheer cliffs. The operation’s stated goal is to be one step ahead of the antiquities looters who comb these caves, where the original caches of Dead Sea Scrolls – thousands of pieces of varied ancient scripture and writings dating from circa 400 BCE to 300 CE – were found by Bedouin shepherds starting in 1946. In the operation to date, Amir Ganor, the head of the IAA’s anti-theft unit, said that most of the 600-plus Judean Desert caves have been mapped using drone technology and hi-tech mapping. That work, he said, has revealed 20 caves “with the potential for good artifacts” that will hopefully be carefully excavated in phase two of the project. Another 25 percent of the desert still needs to be surveyed in the first phase. The operation is being undertaken by the IAA in cooperation with the Staff Officer of the Archaeology Department of the Civil Administration in Judea and Samaria (COGAT), and has been funded in part by the Ministry of Jerusalem Affairs and Heritage. Each body allocated about a third of the entire project budget from its institutions. The inter-office cooperation is key to the success of the operation: About half of the Judean Desert, including the original source of most of the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran, is located in the West Bank beyond the Green Line, where the IAA does not have jurisdiction.

The Week In News jected him to in order for him to pick Israel as a testing ground for the pharma giant’s COVID-19 vaccine. Signed in late December, the deal between Israel and Pfizer ensured a virtually limitless supply of vaccines in exchange for detailed information on the drug’s effectiveness. The agreement is said to be a key reason why Israel currently leads the world in vaccination rates, with over 50% of the total population already having received both doses. In an interview with Channel 12 last Thursday, Bourla described what made Pfizer choose Israel out of the two dozen countries vying to be the pharmaceutical behemoth’s test case. While acknowledging Israel’s optimal conditions, including a small population with hermetically-sealed borders, Bourla said that it was Netanyahu’s incessant calling that sealed the deal. “I was talking with several heads of state. I spoke with your prime minister, he convinced me that Israel is the place with the right conditions,” Bourla recounted. “I was impressed, frankly, with the obsession of your prime minister. He called me 30 times.” The Pfizer executive also cited Israel’s “extraordinary healthcare system” and “very high degree of economic data” that convinced the company to pick it as a test case. However, Bourla hit back at claims by Netanyahu that he had singlehandedly brought Israel its flood of vaccines, clarifying that Pfizer would have chosen it even with a different premier at the helm. Asked about Netanyahu’s frequent claim ahead of the March 23 elections that only he can bring vaccines to Israel, Bourla stressed that his company signs supply contracts with states, not individual leaders. “We are not contracting with individual companies or organizations.… The vaccines will be sold to every country, irrespective of who is the leader,” he clarified. Israel’s collaboration with Pfizer has resulted in the country claiming the highest vaccination rate in the world, with 95% of adults over the age of 60 already having gotten both jabs. The rapid inoculation has helped Israel to dramatically relax its COVID-19 restrictions, allowing bars, restaurants and cafes to open last week for the first time in half a year.
A New LaserGuided Mortar
The IDF unveiled a cutting-edge laser-guided mortar that will enable troops to fight in dense urban environments while avoiding collateral damage to noncombatants. Known as “Iron Sting,” the 20mm mortar has recently undergone final trials in a testing site in southern Israel. The completion of testing enables the start of serial production ahead of the system’s supply to the IDF. The series of tests was carried out using two networked Cardom mortar systems developed by Elbit Systems: a “Cardom” system, mounted on an M113 APC and a “Cardom Spear” system, mounted on a Hummer 4X4 SUV. Developed by Elbit in collaboration with the Directorate of Defense R&D in the Israel Ministry of Defense and the IDF’s Ground Forces, Iron Sting’s operational use will revolutionize ground warfare and equip battalions with more accurate and effective firepower. Its upgraded accuracy, which is unmatched by any corresponding weapons system currently available, allows smaller infantry units to conduct operations in dense, built-up environments. Due to the high concentration of civilians, such operations were traditionally restricted to special forces, limiting the IDF’s flexibility during wartime. With the mortars costing significantly less than the accurate yet expensive missiles the IDF uses to flush out terrorists barricaded in buildings, a regular infantry platoon can now be deployed on a mission once reserved for elite units. This allows the IDF to better counter enemies in open terrains and remain hidden in crowded urban environments. “Ten years of research and development have led us to this moment when we can provide the IDF’s
ground forces with advanced capabilities made for the modern battlefield,” said Head of Research and Development in the DDR&D Brig. Gen. Yaniv Rotem. “This laser and GPS- guided mortar munition provides troops with a precise firing capability that has only been implemented in missiles and air munition thus far. This is a very complex program and a groundbreaking system on the international level.” “The Ground Forces command is leading the process of integrating the ‘Iron Sting’ into the IDF. This precise, guided mortar munition is groundbreaking for IDF battalions, equipping them with accurate and organic firepower,” added Head of the Weapons Department in the IDF’s Ground Forces, Col. Arik Avivi. “This capability has so far been reserved to large and complex missiles. Thanks to this impressive technological development, it will now be implemented in mortar munitions on a wide scale.”
Is Israel Behind Iranian Ship Explosion?
Israel did not respond to the accusations. The explosion occurred the same day as a blockbuster Wall Street Journal report alleged that Israel lay behind a slew of Iranian ship explosions as part of a tit-for-tat war between the two countries. According to the report, Israeli maritime special forces blew up dozens of Iranian-flagged vessels carrying weapons to proxy militias such as Hezbollah in Lebanon. The campaign also saw Israel attack oil tankers ferrying illicit fuel that violated U.S. sanctions “out of concern that petroleum profits are funding extremism in the Middle East.” While none of the tankers sank from the bombings, at least two were forced to limp back to port. The report followed a blast on the Israeli-flagged Helios Ray near Oman last month that senior Israeli defense officials attributed to Iran. “Whenever the region moves toward peace, this [Israeli] regime tries to create unrest for a clear reason,” charged Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Saed Khatibzadeh on Sunday. “[Israel] finds its survival in war, crisis and chaos. Iran would consider all options when it finds out who has been involved in this operation, and will resort to them to protect its legitimate rights.”
Tehran is accusing Israel of orchestrating an explosion on an Iranian cargo ship last week as tensions between the two adversaries heat up. The Shahr e Kord container ship had gone up in flames last Wednesday after being hit by an explosive device. In a statement, Iran said that an investigation into the blast concluded that Israel was responsible, adding that the ship was intentionally targeted by small-arms fire that may have come from fighter planes. “Considering the geographical location and the way the ship was targeted, one of the strong possibilities is that this terrorist operation was carried out by the Zionist regime [Israel],” said a member of Iran’s investigatory commission.

NOT A TRACE OF ILLNESS To the chashuve administration of Tehillim Kollel, It is already four years since my family and I signed up for an active membership with Tehillim Kollel. Throughout the years, we saw many open instances in which the Tehillim accompanied us and showered us with brachah. May Hashem continue to help us… Nevertheless, I wanted to share a most interesting anecdote… Lately, as I was going over my personal accounts, I tried to remind myself what had prompted me to begin my membership with Tehillim Kollel years back. What was the cause that made me choose a partnership with the minyan that says Tehillim daily? I asked about it at home, and we remembered that exactly four years ago, my special father-in-law was diagnosed with the terrible machalah that no Yid should know about. It floated back to mind, how broken and hopeless the situation felt then. And, today, four years later, there is no trace of the illness, baruch Hashem. My father-in-law is completely cured. The Week In News “largest in American history.” While probes have been ongoing since the violence on January 6, prosecutors had been waiting for Merrick Garland to be sworn in as Attorney General before proceeding. “Based on the information we received from supervisors, it sounds like things are moving along. I hope to have plea offers for these parties soon,” said Assistant US Attorney Amanda Fretto. “That could happen within a few weeks.” Over 300 people have already been charged for their role in the violence, including dozens of known right-wing extremists. Prosecutors say that they will soon file charges against Oath Keepers, an anti-government militia that arrived at the Capitol outfitted in military and tactical gear including bulletproof vests and ballistic helmets. Since protesters breached the Capitol in early January, police have already executed 900 search warrants in 49 states, seized 15,000 hours of video footage and 1,600 cellphones, and interviewed over 80,000 people. One-hundred people will be charged by March 20, with authorities asking courts for more time due to the sheer size of the probe. “The investigation and prosecution of the Capitol Attack will likely be one of the largest in American history, both in terms of the number of defendants prosecuted and the nature and volume of the evidence,” federal prosecutors said.
$27M for George Floyd’s Family

The Minneapolis City Council awarded $27 million to the family of George Floyd as compensation for his death last summer at the hands of a police officer. The settlement stemmed from a federal civil rights lawsuit the Floyd family had filed against the city and five police officers. Floyd was allegedly killed by Derek Chauvin, a Minne-
apolis police officer who kneeled on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes last May before Floyd died. “I do want to – on behalf of the entire City Council – offer my deepest condolences to the family of George Floyd, his friends, and all in our community who are mourning his loss,” said Minneapolis City Council President Lisa Bender. “No amount of money can ever address the intense pain or trauma caused by this death to George Floyd’s family or to the people of our city.” Floyd’s family thanked the city for the unprecedented settlement and pledged to use some of the money towards promoting local African-American businesses. Floyd’s relatives added that no sum could make up the pain they were experiencing for their loss. “Even though my brother is not here, he’s here with me in my heart,” said Philonise Floyd, George’s younger brother. “Because if I could get him back, I would give all of this back.” “Our family suffered an irreplaceable loss May 25 when George’s life was senselessly taken by a Minneapolis police officer,” added George’s sister, Bridgett. “While we will never get our beloved George back, we will continue to work tirelessly to make this world a better, and safer, place for all.” The Floyd family’s lawsuit had accused Minneapolis of allowing a deep-seated culture of racism to flourish within the police department. According to court filings, Chauvin would not have kneeled on Floyd’s neck had the officer been forced to undergo mandatory sensitivity training beforehand. The settlement comes as prosecutors continue with the jury selection for Chauvin’s murder trial. He pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree unintentional murder and second-degree manslaughter. “George Floyd’s horrific death, witnessed by millions of people around the world, unleashed a deep longing and undeniable demand for justice and change,” said Ben Crump, the lead attorney representing the Floyd family. Crump stated that this settlement “sends a powerful message that black lives do matter and that police brutality against people of color must end.”

Biden Backs Up Cuomo President Joe Biden offered cautious support for embattled Governor Andrew Cuomo, saying that the New York governor shouldn’t resign until a full investigation is concluded. “I think the investigation is underway, and we should see what it brings us,” Biden said on Monday when asked by reporters at the White House. The New York Democrat is facing growing calls to resign after almost a dozen harassment allegations against women surfaced. Cuomo is also under fire for his 2020 Executive Order mandating nursing homes to accept COVID-19 patients, which ultimately led to the death of an estimated 15,000 seniors – way more than his administration admitted to earlier in the year. The litany of scandals has led prominent Democrats to demand Cuomo’s resignation, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. The White House, though, has refrained from demanding that Cuomo step down and has offered the controversial governor cautious support even as the scandal widens. On Sunday, White House deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reiterated that Biden did not expect Cuomo to resign until “a full and comprehensive investigation” was conducted. “Every woman that comes forward ... they should be heard, they should be listened to and they should be respected,” she told MSNBC. “That’s what the President believes, that’s what the Vice President believes.” Later in the day, White House chief of staff Ron Klain said that Cuomo should remain in office until the probe “runs its course.” “What the President said is that there’s a process. These charges are very serious charges. They ought to be investigated and that process ought to run its course,” Klain said. Cuomo maintains his innocence, denying the allegations and chalking them up to a misunderstanding. “I did not do what has been alleged,” Cuomo said over the weekend. “I never harassed anyone, I never assaulted anyone, I never abused anyone.”
Border Crisis Intensifies Under Biden Republicans are intensifying their attacks on the Biden administration
amid a worsening migrant crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border. Illegal immigration has exploded ever since Biden defeated former President Donald Trump in November, leading to the worst border crisis in years. Buoyed by Biden’s promises to reverse Trump’s hardline immigration policies, migrants have flocked to the border, while immigration officials remain helpless. As of this past Monday, incarceration centers for illegal immigrants were at 755% capacity. The Department of Health and Human Services’ refugee office is currently looking after 8,800 unaccompanied children, with authorities at a loss as to what to do with them. The lack of adequate facilities to house the detainees has led to what many describe as a “humanitarian crisis,” with children allowed to shower only once a week. As the situation worsens, Republicans are noting that the Biden administration’s pro-immigration rhetoric is out of touch with the reality on the ground. On Monday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy led a dozen GOP lawmakers on a tour of the border in El Paso in which they highlighted the health and security risks the crisis is causing. “I came down here because I heard of the crisis. It’s more than a crisis. This is a human heartbreak,” McCarthy. “It didn’t have to happen. This crisis is created by the presidential policies of this new administration.” Twitter accounts belonging to other GOP lawmakers showed the group focusing squarely on the immigration snafu in hope that the crisis can define Biden’s first 100 days in office. Assisting the effort is the administration’s refusal to define the reality as a “crisis,” allowing the Republican Party to paint Biden as disconnected and out of touch. “We recognize this is a big problem,” said White House press secretary Jen Psaki when asked if Biden viewed the border crossings as a crisis. “[We] always get into the fun of labels around here, but I would say our focus is on solutions,” Psaki added. Clearly the numbers are enormous. This is a big challenge, and it certainly is a reflection of using every lever of the federal government to help address that.”
Polar Bear Hotel
Where do polar bears go when they go on vacation? China has opened up the world’s first polar bear hotel. The Polar Bear Hotel, part of the Harbin Polarland theme park in Heilongjiang’s capital and largest city, Harbin, opened its doors on Friday with the promise of round-theclock polar bear viewing from all 21 guest rooms. “Whether you’re eating, playing or sleeping, polar bears will keep you company,” Harbin Polarland’s official WeChat account said in a post dated March 11. The polar bears are viewed by guests in a glass enclosure. The bears sit on artificial ice and enjoy small pools of water. When temperatures permit, the bears are let outdoors, as well. Viewing bears on your next vacation seems to be a great attraction. Rooms range from 1,888 to 2,288 yuan ($290.10 to $351.56) per night, and interest in the hotel is “very high.” Of course, not everyone is enthused about bears hanging out in hotels. “Polar bears belong in the Arctic, not in zoos or glass boxes in aquariums – and certainly not in hotels,” Jason Baker, senior vice president at animal rights group PETA, said. “Polar bears are active for up to 18 hours a day in nature, roaming home ranges that can span thousands of miles, where they enjoy a real life.” We can barely contain our excitement.
Lipstick on a Pig Pet pigs have been forced to wear pet dogs’ clothes – until now. Doreen Burke, 44, adopted her pet “mini” pig Rosie more than six years
ago. Eventually she realized that she would have to make clothing for Rosie, as there were no pig clothes to be found. “At the point that I got her, September 2, 2014, there wasn’t a lot on the internet about mini pigs and so I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into,” Burke of Port Charlotte, Florida, said. “Turns out there’s really no such thing as a mini pig.” Burke was told that Rosie would grow to be around 40 to 50 pounds. She now weighs 200 pounds and has outgrown any pet clothes on the market. “I would never give my pig up, but I quickly realized that there wasn’t real access to clothes that actually would fit her, so I decided to teach myself how to make them,” Burke said. Since then, Burke has launched a pet pig fashion line called the Snort Life. “I’m passionate about my pig and have always been into fashion so it just worked,” she said. “The business happened organically.”
She realized that there are others out there with the same pig problems. “People are out there trying to fit pigs into dog clothes and they aren’t built the same and each pig needs custom clothing to fit properly,” Burke said. “That’s when I decided to start Snort Life.” Customers send Burke their pet pigs’ measurements, and she sews the outfits during her evenings when she’s done with her full-time job. “I’ve made costumes for birthdays, tuxedos for weddings, motorcycle jackets, clowns, cop uniforms, newsboy outfits, cowboys, you name it,” Burke said. “With the rise of social media, I think people like to dress up their pets and show them off so I wanted to ensure that I’m providing a way to do it safely for pigs,” she added. “I really just like making people happy and it makes people smile seeing pigs dressed up in cute outfits, while also knowing the pig isn’t being squeezed into dog clothes.” Happy as a pig in mud.

Carpas Diem! By Rabbi Zvi Teichman
“Karpas!” We take a vegetable and dip it in saltwater. So begins the ‘action’ at the Seder. What vegetable should we use? How much do we eat? What should we have in mind? Why are we eating vegetables before the meal altogether? Questions! Questions! Questions!
B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M
Truth be told, the Talmud informs us that this introduction to the Seder is done simply to arouse the curiosity of the children. But what shall we answer them if they actually inquire about our reason for doing this? The Talmud doesn’t offer us any insight or direction as to what our response should be. Neither the Mishna nor the Talmud specifies what vegetable in particular one must use, it merely tells to use a ירק, any vegetable. Yet traditionally we all refer to this segment of the Seder as כרפס, Karpas, which clearly refers to the specie of vegetable known as Karpas. Some allege it is what was earlier known as פיטרוסלינון, and later called פיטרזיל, possibly parsnip or parsley. While others aver it is the vegetable אפיא, celery, which is actually widely used among Sephardim and many Ashkenazim until today. In the fifteen steps of the Seder night that are outlined in the ‘Order of the Seder’, which we recite at the onset of the Seder, is the first time we find the identification of this stage of the Seder, of dipping a vegetable, as ‘Karpas’. This ‘Order’ we recite first appears in a work known as Machzor Vitri, written by a student of Rashi, who attributes its authorship to his teacher Rashi. Why were they so set on using this
specific vegetable? Whatever the motivation, the term Karpas became the nom de plume for whatever vegetable we choose to use to fulfill this step, from radish to the potato. Why? We were taught as children the mystical allusion in the word כרפס, that when spelled backwards reads פרך-ס, the ס, corresponding to the number sixty, referring to the 60 myriads of Jews who were sentenced to ''פרך, the Hebrew word for backbreaking work. We also remember being told the allusion in this word to the selling of Yosef by his brothers and their tearing off the special tunic he received from his father, and their ‘dipping’ it in blood seeking to dupe Yaakov into thinking he was torn apart by an animal. The word כרפס, breaks down into two words כר, meaning sale, alluding to their having sold him as a slave, and פס, stripe, an intimation of his precious כתונת פסים, ‘striped’ tunic, being violently ripped from him. This episode too is significant to the tale of the exodus, as it was because of that failure of the brothers to appreciate Yosef, that we eventually descended unto Egypt with all its fatal consequences. In a remarkable parallel, Rashi, in his commentary on Torah, when defining the exact nature of the כתונת פסים, the Striped Tunic, informs us that it was made from ‘fine wool’ material known as כרפס, Karpas! Is this merely a fascinating coincidence that the Karpas vegetable we eat at the beginning of the Seder is similar to the word used to describe the fine cloth that the special coat of
Yosef was composed of, which is so integrally related to the story of the exodus from Egypt? Could this correlation have compelled the Sages to call for the use of this ‘Karpas’ vegetable specifically so as to conjure the fatal episode of the sale of Yosef by his brothers, that was the catalyst for our descent unto Egypt? Or might there be a deeper connection between these two subjects? The Talmud tells us that after Adam sinned he was told by G-d, “accursed is the ground because of you; through suffering shall you eat... Thorns and thistles shall it sprout for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field”. Upon hearing this decree Adam’s ‘eyes dripped with tears’ as he painfully exclaims, “Will I eat from the same trough as my donkey?!” G-d hearing Adam’s anguish encourages him not to fret, telling him, ...“ — בזעת אפיךby the sweat of your brow you will eat bread”, enlightening him that although he may have to toil mightily for his sustenance he will nevertheless be privileged to partake of ‘bread’ as only man can. (פסחים ).קיח Was Adam afraid of being relegated to only eating vegetables? Was the promise of fresh and delicious bread his sole goal? Did Adam really think that even if would be limited to only eating from the ‘herbs of the field’ he would have to eat it out of a trough? Couldn’t he spruce it up and place it with dignity upon his table as we often do when relishing a delicious vegetable salad? Of course, it was not Adam’s simple need for sophisticated ‘food’ that he cried over. Adam realizing that he made a most fatal choice in partaking from the Tree of Knowledge feared that G-d would rescind his exalted status as a ‘free willed’ individual. He thought that perhaps by being demoted to eat from the ‘same trough as his donkey’
he was being told that from hereon in he, as the animal, will be provided for by G-d himself. Just as animals have no free will and are creatures of instinct who G-d lovingly provides their sustenance without any need to deserve His attention, so too would man become a higher echelon animal who would receive his daily fare unconditionally from a benevolent G-d. It wasn’t the eating from the trough that troubled Adam as much as his descending to the level of creature of instinct, robbed of the privilege to rise closer to G-d through the moral choices one makes in overcoming our drives for power, pleasure and indulgence. The trough simply represents the lack of that personal relationship with the Almighty. He cried, just as we are taught the lower waters cried when their counterpart upper waters separated from them during the creation of the Firmament that divided them, longing for closeness and wallowing in its plight of being so distant from the Creator. These were tears of yearning for the ability to once again attain the great appellation of ‘free-willed’ human, who can surpass even an angel in bonding with G-d through the choices one makes. Rav S.R. Hirsch ponders the usage of the word אפיך, rather than the more common פניך, your face, when describing the sweaty beads of moisture that flow when laboring hardily in the production of the literal and proverbial ‘bread’. The אףis the nostril, the portal through which G-d breathed life into our souls. אףalso means, ‘also’. He writes: Hence אפיםmeans the opening of the body through which man greedily take in the stream of life necessary for the maintenance of life, i.e. the nose and also used in a broad sense, in general, the striving, wishing, longing, face, hence ארך אפים, patience, קצר אפים, impatience, and אףunsatisfied desire, anger. But פניםin general, is the face turned in any direction... And בזעת אפיך, not אפים.פניך, the effort to absorb the world in oneself to gain

a little piece of the universe to oneself, is the object of all work. )(בראשית ב ז Sustenance is called טרף, inasmuch as it has to be ‘snatched’ in the struggle with nature, ( לחםroot of מלחמה, to battle) as, at the same time, it has to go through the struggle for existence against fellow men, the struggle of all against all. Did we not have to direct our minds so much to obtaining our daily bread, strife between man and man would not be so pre-eminent, and the idea of property would not weigh so heavily in the scales? )(שם ג יט Man was reassured by G-d that he has not lost his exalted calling, on the contrary the challenge now is even more rewarding, although equally dangerous. Man would struggle for his bread, a metaphor for all attainment in this world. Will he seek to merely absorb this world within himself for personal gain and self-aggrandizement, or will his pursuit and conquering of this material world be utilized to promote the glory of our Creator? When Adam was told by G-d,
thorns and thistles shall sprout for you, He then added, ואכלת את עשב השדה, and you shall eat the herb of the field”. It is reported that the Holy Arizal saw in this verse an imperative and would seek out herbs in the field that were not planted by man and consume them, in fulfillment of this verse. )(מ"א או"ח סי' ק"ע ס"ק י"ט When we are condemned to eating only herbs we are mere animals, however when we choose to forgo the labors and pleasures of bread, choosing to sustain ourselves from the bounty of G-d’s garden, we have elected to express our godliness! We have won the ‘battle’! After the brothers cast Yosef into the pit the Torah reports, they sat to eat ‘ — לחםbread’. The battle for ‘bread’, which was pitched subsequent to Adam’s sin, reared its head once again. The brothers in their קצר אף, impatience, seeking to ingratiate themselves with their own notion of entitlement, were blinded by their ‘absorbing’ this material world. They were unwilling to appreciate the nobil-
ity of their father’s beloved son. Might it be that we dip precisely an herb, which brings us back to that moment of shocking reality and longing that Adam experienced when he mistakenly thought he was being cast away with the animals, into the salt water, symbolic of Adam’s tears of yearning, in order to relive his excitement in subsequently discovering that he was still G-d’s beloved son? We allude to the story of Yosef and their failure to learn the lesson of Adam in winning the battle for survival. We recall the need of our nation, after having succumbed to the temptations of an Egyptian culture, to be subjected once again, as Yosef was, to the forces of Egypt, fighting our way back by transforming ourselves from beaten animals into the exalted sons of a benevolent Father. In this moment of exhilarated discovery we seek to prod our children towards greatness. The path ahead and its challenges and obstacles are unknown but we must nevertheless instill
within them a striving and pining for closeness to G-d that will accompany them, and enable them to ward off the temptation to take the easy path of instinct rather than difficult choice. It’s not about finding an answer. It is about enthusiastically staying the course even when a battle lays ahead, even when G-d’s presence may not be readily apparent. May we raise whatever vegetable we choose and joyously celebrate the privilege we have in opting to become ever closer to G-d? We must seize this moment in setting the tone for the night by realizing how truly fortunate we are, because only if our children sense that magnificent privilege will they in kind follow suit on the path towards greatness that awaits each one of us! The Wandering
Jew
My Personal Yetzias Mitzrayim By Hershel Lieber
O
ur May 1979 trip to the Soviet Union began with purely touristic intentions but culminated as a mission on behalf of our struggling brethren behind the Iron Curtain. We were truly inspired by the community of refuseniks and dissidents who were in various stages of reclaiming their Jewish identities. We were privileged to connect with them and to offer them our empathy and much needed encouragement. What we did not expect, though, was that this trip would be the beginning of a change of direction in our own lives. Nor did we foresee the subsequent trips that we would make to that part of the world time and time again. In September 1979, I was asked by Rabbis Hershel Bronstein and Yakov Pollak of the organization Al Tidom to go to Warsaw, Poland, to be the chazzan for the yomim noraim there. I have previously written about my experiences during the Warsaw phase of this journey. In addition, they asked me to travel to the U.S.S.R., namely Moscow, Leningrad and Kiev, to undertake several missions in each city. The sensation of intrigue and the excitement of an adventure overrode any thoughts of
The Choral Synagogue in Moscow
danger and fear, so I readily accepted. I traveled alone and was away from home for over two weeks. I spent Rosh Hashana in Warsaw which was on Shabbos and Sunday that year. I scheduled myself to leave for Moscow on Monday, Tzom Gedalya, so I could be in Kiev for Shabbos Shuva. I planned to return to Warsaw on Sunday, erev Yom Kippur. Mensch tracht ober Gott lacht, Man makes plans, but Hashem laughs.
Meeting with Refuseniks My arrival at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow presented my first challenge. I had taken along my tallis and tefillin, a siddur, a selichos, and a Gemara for my personal use. I also brought along a gift for R’ Eliyahu Essas, the leader and teacher of the fledgling baal teshuva movement in the Soviet Union: the new Hebrew sefer “HaChassidut” by Yitzchok Alfasi, written about the history of chassidus with short biographies of the Rebbes. I also took along dozens of Jewish calendars, which we received in the mail
from many organizations, to distribute to Yidden on my trip. When my suitcase was opened up for inspection, all these objects, written in a foreign language, were the subject of intense scrutiny. The clerk called his supervisor who sternly forbade me from taking in any written matter. My tallis and tefillin were all he would allow me to bring in. I spoke to them forcefully, but politely, that as a religious person I needed these books for prayer and study and that they should be more accommodating to my requirements. It took quite awhile until they agreed to let me enter with these items. The exception was the dozens of calendars which they rightfully questioned why I would need more than one. The most surprising items that they missed finding were the three Ezras Torah shul calendars which had a treasure trove of information and halachos about cyclical events throughout the Jewish year. These large calendars came in cardboard tubes which I put into the sleeves of the raincoat that I

was wearing. I could not bend my arms while they were talking to me and worried that they would slip out. Baruch Hashem, they were not detected. That experience was somewhat unnerving, but I survived. By the time I arrived at the National Hotel across Red Square half a day was gone. My passport had to be left by the hotel desk to be registered with the police, which usually took about 12 hours. I needed it immediately so I could to go to the Polish Embassy and get a new visa to re-enter Poland for Yom Kippur. The clerk, a reserved, polite woman, obliged my request and

with a whisper informed me that she was Jewish. She told me that her mother’s yahrtzeit was that day and asked me what she could do about it. I told her to light a candle at home and that I would say kaddish in shul that afternoon. She handed me a note with her mother’s name on it and thanked me profusely. I immediately went to the Polish Embassy and to my delight had a visa stamped into my passport within fifteen minutes. Before I left New York, I had made plans to meet Rabbi Sholem Ber Kowalsky of the Young Israel of Hillcrest in Queens, who, too, was on a mission in Moscow during that week. He did not show up at our meeting place at Lenin’s Tomb, near the Kremlin, so I headed to the Choral Synagogue on Arkhipova Street. There I met many of the people I got to know from my first trip to Moscow as well as Rabbi Kowalsky, who said he was too weak from fasting to go out to meet me. I joined a shiur given by Rabbi Avrohom Miller, who remained in Russia under the harsh communist regime true to the mesora of his great mentor the Chofetz Chaim. After davening Mincha and Maariv, I joined Rabbi Kowalsky in his room at the massive Rossiya Hotel where his wife prepared a delicious supper to break
our fast. The next day was jampacked with activity. I got up at 6am and was running around until 4:30pm when I had to return to the hotel and rush to the airport for my flight to Leningrad. Arriving at the shul for Shacharis, I

My trip to Leningrad was from Tuesday evening until Wednesday evening, a mere 24 hours. There, between meeting people in shul and taking a long informative walk with R’ Tzodik Rifkin, I was apprised of the current situation of the Jews. I was given a directive to report back in America of the difficulties that they are subjected to. I still had a sliver of time to visit the Museum of Religion and Atheism on Nevsky Prospekt, which equally maligned all religions including Judaism. Then I had to rush back to the Hotel Astoria for my baggage and depart for the last leg of this trip, Kiev.
Arrested by the KGB compiled a list of items that the community desperately needed, including gidden and retzuos for tefillin. I also met some young people including one who was learning hilchos shechita. From shul I took a taxi and went to the apartment of R’ Eliyahu Essas who greeted me warmly and was touched by my gift of the sefer on chassidus. We spent hours talking, and he asked me for help him by sending tashmishei kedusha and kosher food to his talmidim, who numbered over 100 people. In fact, some of his students were now teaching the next group of beginners. This baal teshuva

He asked that they not be forgotten and that their cause be promoted. When I returned to the hotel, I looked for the young woman receptionist to inform her that I said kaddish for her mother. I was shocked when I was told that she did not work there anymore. She was evidently noticed when she gave me a note and was immediately dismissed from her job. The KGB at its ruthless best!
Dissidents and refusniks in a show of Jewish pride and nationality on Simchas Torah at the Choral Synagogue in Moscow in the early 1970s
My mission to the Kiev Jewish community was very different than my visits in Moscow and Leningrad. In order to understand what I was trying to accomplish, a little bit of history is in order. From the late 1960s and onward, many Jews developed a pride in their nationality, and some began connecting to their religion. This started after the Six Day War with its miraculous Israeli victory. Concurrently, many Jews started applying for exit visas to leave the Soviet Union. The Russian government allowed some to leave while many others were denied permission. These refuseniks were persecuted, and some were even sent to Siberian labor camps as a punishment for propositioning to leave. Protesting was not a possibility and contact with foreigners was suppressed. The refuseniks were constantly under the watchful eyes of the KGB. Yet, once a year, thousands of Jews gathered to express their solidarity with Jews worldwide by dancing and singing Hebrew songs and thereby encouraging each other in their struggle. This was done on Simchas Torah in front of Choral Synagogues in Moscow and Leningrad. The police force,

The Choral Synagogue in Kiev
as well as the KGB, was also there but they did not interfere with the revelry, as these events were covered by Western TV and media. They stationed themselves in the background, photographing and taking notes of the attendees for future reference. Nevertheless, this annual event may have influenced the Soviet government to allow for more emigration. As noted, this event took place only in Moscow and Leningrad. Kiev, which was home to the third largest Jewish population at the time, was very quiet on Simchas Torah. No gatherings, no
singing, no dancing, and, in a sense, complacency with the status quo. My mission was to meet with one of the leaders of the refusenik community, Rotshteyn, and encourage him to organize a Simchas Torah gathering at the synagogue. This message was given over to me by Rabbi Pollak to relay to Rotshteyn. At the time I was not aware, and I was rightfully not told, from whom this message originated. Later on, when I returned home, Rabbi Pollak told me that it came from none other than Menachem Begin. My arrival in Kiev was uneventful.
After a good night’s sleep in the Hotel Dnieper I went to the synagogue in the Podol area and presented them with my last Ezras Torah calendar. There were about forty people there for Shacharis and I was given a tour of the dilapidated matzah bakery. When I returned to my room, I called Rotshteyn and made up to come to his apartment at 11am. I went out on the street and hailed a taxi and gave him the exact address. The drive took about twenty minutes, and as I exited the taxi, I looked around to find where the building’s entrance was. Before I had a chance to think, two men – slim but very mean-looking – grabbed me by my arms and dragged me a half a block to a waiting car. They pushed me into the backseat, all the while barking orders in Russian, which I did not understand. Then they drove off, stopping at a building that had a sign with the word melitz, which means police. There they picked up an English-speaking interpreter who told me that I would have to answer all the questions they will ask. They started driving and, from what I could make out, we were leaving the city of Kiev. There was complete silence in the car with the exception of one remark made to me by the interpreter. He was sitting next to driver and he turned around and said, facing me, “Do you think your G-d will help you now?” I answered him confidently, with a deep conviction, “I am sure He will.” Many things were going through my mind then. I realized that I was in the hands of the KGB which would try to frame me for a crime. I knew I had to get rid of any evidence of criminal activity. The first was the many pamphlets published by Al Tidom that I had in my raincoat pocket. These were on Jewish subjects such as holidays and mitzvos and were written in Russian. Somehow, they escaped being discovered when my suitcase was inspected upon arrival. I was bringing them to Rotshteyn to distribute to his refusenik group. I was sure that the KGB would make me empty my pockets, and I could not claim they were for personal use. There were too many of them on the same subject and they were written in Russian. I had to think fast. The pamphlets were in my left pocket and one of the KGB officers
was sitting to my right. Slowly and stealthily I removed the pamphlets and stuffed them between the car seat and the backrest. Baruch Hashem, I managed to get rid of thirty or more pamphlets. I was thinking, jokingly, that they will only discover them when they do bedikas chometz. The next problem was my master list of names and phone numbers of the people I had contacted. This list I hid in my sock but I was afraid they may ask me to remove my shoes and socks. As I was trying to think of a solution, I realized that we were driving through a wooded area well outside of Kiev. The car stopped abruptly, and I was ordered out. The driver put on a leather jacket and, somehow, I imagined that he will start to hit me, which did not happen. I was ordered to go to a nearby clearing where there was a large tree stump. As expected, I was first told to empty my pockets, which I did. I only had some coins and my wallet, which they inspected. They asked for my passport, but I told them that the receptionist at the hotel had it. They told me to remove my shoes, which they looked into, but thank G-d they did not ask me to take off my socks. They then sat me on the tree stump and began questioning me as to why I came the Soviet Union and who sent me. I contended that I came as a tourist to see their beautiful country. They questioned my intended visit with Rotshteyn, which they claimed was against the law. I explained that a friend of mine who was his relative asked me to go and give him regards. When they asked what his name was, I blurted out a friend’s name from my Brooklyn shul, Lipa Wakszall, the first name that came to my mind. They told me that I was intending to go to an area where a crime was committed and was about to meet with a criminal. I told them I had no relation with Rotshteyn at all and had no idea the person was a criminal or that the area was a crime scene. This conversation was repeated a number of times and was getting nowhere. They even wanted me to sign a paper, which I refused. I still don’t know from where I took the courage to turn the table around and go on the offensive. I started screaming that they have no right to take an innocent tourist and

make these accusations. If Rotshteyn was a criminal, why is he at home? I asked them. I told them that in America criminals are usually put in jail. I admonished them for spoiling my trip. I added that I had booked a city tour of Kiev and that they were holding me up. At one point, they finally told me to get back into the car and they drove me back to the hotel. All the while, they warned me that I would never be allowed to return to the U.S.S.R. I still insisted that they were punishing me for nothing and that I loved their country and wished to see their country’s great sights in the future. When I finally walked into my room, I saw that my suitcase was in complete disarray. Evidently, they had sent someone in to find contraband in my room. Baruch Hashem the pamphlets were buried in the car seat, the Ezras Torah calendars were all distributed, and my master list was safe in my sock. The only thing that was still in that suitcase were photos from a Pesach seder in Moscow which I was asked to bring to Rabbi Bronstein. Again, with mazal they were not discovered.

At this point I realized that I had to leave Kiev immediately. I was afraid that the KGB may want to corroborate my story with Rotshteyn. He would deny knowing Lipa Wakszall and that could have serious consequences for me. I went down to the lobby and tried to buy a ticket on any plane that was leaving Kiev to Western Europe on

that day. Tomorrow was Friday and I needed to be somewhere before Shabbos – anywhere but there! The only flight leaving that day was a Swissair flight to Zurich. I immediately booked the flight. I still had a few hours before I had to leave to the airport. I booked a tour of Kiev in keeping with what I told the KGB agent – that I had a city tour scheduled. A woman guide gave me a private tour showing me the highlights of this city. I still remember the chestnut trees that shaded the main thoroughfare with hundreds of chestnuts on the walkways. At one point she took me to see the statue of their hero, Bogdan Chmelnitsky. I told her that although he was a Ukrainian hero, he was responsible for the death and destruction of dozens of Jewish communities and tens of thousands of my people. She quickly ushered me back to

area. Although they told me it was fine, the subsequent customs officer told me I was in violation of the customs law. He then directed me to have my suitcase inspected. This time I was not so lucky, and they discovered the Pesach seder photos. They questioned me as to who the people at the “party” were. I told them that I did not know them and that I just was taking those photos to a family member who lived in the States. They confiscated the photos, took my address, and said they would send them to me once they finished their investigation, which they never did. Afterwards, they ordered me into a private cubicle with an officer. I had to completely undress as he scrutinized me to see if I was smuggling any contraband. He ordered me to take off my shoes but again refrained from making me pull off my socks. My master list was still safe! I then grasped how much time was spent and that I seemingly would miss my plane. Suddenly, the agent started to rush me to get dressed and they took me by car to the plane which was waiting on the tarmac for takeoff. Sitting on the plane, I took a
deep breath but still did not feel safe. I realized that they could make the plane return if they felt something was amiss. I arrived in Zurich in the evening. I had no idea where to go or whom to call. I just knew that I should be kissing the ground when I disembarked. I had just experienced my own yetzias Mitzrayim. Footnote: I had written a diary of my journey on sheets of loose-leaf paper throughout my journey. This diary was baruch Hashem not discovered when I left Kiev. I mailed it to Pesi from Zurich hoping I would not lose it or have it confiscated when I returned to Warsaw. Pesi received it before I came home and was shocked and terrified by my harrowing episode with the KGB. I must say that I received a hero’s welcome when I finally arrived home. Hershel Lieber has been involved in kiruv activities for over 30 years. As a founding member of the Vaad L’Hatzolas Nidchei Yisroel he has traveled with his wife, Pesi, to the Soviet Union during the harsh years of the Communist regimes to advance Yiddishkeit. He has spearheaded a yeshiva in the city of Kishinev that had 12 successful years with many students making Torah their way of life. In Poland, he lectured in the summers at the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation camp for nearly 30 years. He still travels to Warsaw every year – since 1979 – to be the chazzan for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur for the Jews there. Together with Pesi, he organized and led trips to Europe on behalf of Gateways and Aish Hatorah for college students finding their paths to Jewish identity. His passion for travel has taken them to many interesting places and afforded them unique experiences. Their open home gave them opportunities to meet and develop relationships with a variety of people. Hershel’s column will appear in The Jewish Home on a bi-weekly basis.

Fourth – and Final?
B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M
“T
here will not be a fifth election.” This was the adamant claim of Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu during a recent interview with Channel 13’s Ayala Hasson. Netanyahu asserted that this time around, the elections would result in a definitive victory and a stable coalition. The longtime premier said the confidence was based on internal polls conducted by his own Likud party. According to a senior Likud official, the party’s polls ask respondents how sure they are that they will vote at all and how resolute they are about backing their party of choice. The surveys found that Netanyahu’s supporters are firm. In contrast, claimed Netanyahu, those aligned with his rivals’ parties, Naftali Bennett’s Yamina and New Hope headed by former confidant Gideon Saar, were much less certain about their vote. Yes, uncertainty has been the name of the game in Israeli politics, which
has seen the most volatile two years in its history, pandemic chaos notwithstanding. The Prime Minister’s remarks were almost certainly in response to comments made by his political rival Benny Gantz who had told an interviewer two days earlier that the risk of yet another election was high. It is well within Netanyahu’s interests to quell those fears. The prospect of the upcoming March 23rd vote being for naught could sap his supporters’ enthusiasm and keep them home on election day. News outlets have been speaking for months about the so-called “election fatigue” being experienced by the general population. Israel’s Basic Law requires elections to take place every four years – on a Tuesday in the Hebrew month of Cheshvan to be precise. But this orderly procedure has not been the way things actually play out. The instability of government coalitions has led to much more frequent voting. Three months ago,
Why Netanyahu Will Reign After Yet Another Election BY SHAMMAI SISKIND
the Jerusalem-based Israel Democracy Institute published a report showing how Israel conducts far more elections than other Western democracies, averaging one round every 2.3 years, compared to other countries with a gap of three or more between polls. March 23 will mark election number four in a two-year period. For many, the repetitive nature of the stalemate is getting a bit ridiculous. One online commentator recently quipped: “Do I have to bring my ID with me to vote next week, or will they remember me from last time?” But for all the talk of being worn out from elec-
tions, it seems most Israelis are still game. In a recent poll by media outlet Israel Hayom, a whopping sixty-two percent of those polled stated they were definitely planning to vote. Another twenty percent said there was a high likelihood they would participate. With three-fifths of voter turnout, it is not lack of participation that will influence the outcome. In fact, just the opposite seems to be the case.
Mapping the Field Unique to this round of elections is the ever-mounting risk of a peculiar phenomenon that can have a drastic impact on who
will be occupying the next Knesset. This electoral effect, known as vote splitting, comes about when the distribution of votes among multiple similar candidates reduces the chance of winning for any of the similar candidates and increases the probability of victory for those candidates’ opposition. This type of political strategizing tends to be more common to a “winner-takes-all” type election, namely one in which the ticket with the most votes wins. In such an arrangement, the disbursement of total votes is essentially irrelevant. All that a given candidate is concerned with is grabbing more votes

Instead of single issue voters, Israel has seen a plethora of single issue parties, tickets on which their entire political sales pitch revolves around a myopic sliver of policy concerns. than all the other candidates. What this means practically is that dividing an electorate can be absolutely deadly to a political movement. Students of U.S. governmental history can readily recall the catastrophe that befell the Republican party in the 1912 presidential election. The incumbent Howard Taft, who had been “handpicked” by his immensely popular predecessor Teddy Roosevelt, faced progressive Woodrow Wilson in the race to the White House. An acrimonious falling-out between Roosevelt and his longtime friend Taft two years earlier ended up spurring Roosevelt to run as a third party candidate. The disunity among Republican voters resulted in a landslide victory for Wilson, with one of the largest margins in history. But it wasn’t so much that Wilson won than the Republican side lost. Only 41 percent of total votes went to Wilson, while 27 percent and 23 percent went to Taft and Roosevelt, respectively. Combined, Taft’s and Roosevelt’s votes would have easily given the Republicans both the popular vote and the Electoral College. Traditionally, Israeli politics has not been concerned with the problem of vote splitting. Sure, the disbursement of votes can and does have an important effect on coalition bargaining. But the idea that voter capital would go to waste completely had not been so central to the equation. Israel’s parliamentary system
is designed to include even the most marginalized political voices. This time around, however, is different. In the last several months, a wave of new factions has sprung up from across Israel’s political spectrum, particularly those seeking a piece of the center-left base. This occurrence has been triggered by several factors, most prominent among them the eruption of new social crises created by the pandemic and related government restrictions, as well as the abject failure of the last center-left project, the Blue and White conglomerate headed by Benny Gantz. These initiatives, often backed by talented and committed indiv iduals, have, in an ironic way, the potential to completely undermine their own agendas. The single biggest factor in the coming election may very well be the fact that the field is spread as thin as it is. Lacking a unified political force, the anti-Netanyahu bloc simply may not be able to put enough scattered seats into the Knesset. In this sense, Netanyahu’s unwavering, iron-support will serve him well. The center-left agenda will likely fail, not due to lack of votes but because of a lack of electoral cohesion.
Divide and Conquer To get a picture of how this might play out, let’s take a look at the math. Out of the country’s population of 9.14 million, 5.9 million Israelis (about
64%) are currently eligible to vote, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics. This has important implications for smaller parties clamoring to get into the Knesset. High voter turnout also makes the numerical demands of Israel’s 3.25 percent threshold for entry into the Knesset go up. What this means – assuming polls and stats are somewhat accurate – is that any party looking to scrape by on March 23 needs to convince around 156,000 Israelis to vote for them. Smaller parties relying on their traditional base will be hardest hit by this fact as they tend to rely on their tiny but committed constituencies for their support. These bases don’t necessarily grow in number every time the total voter turnout increases. The Arab coalition party, for instance, Ra’am (sometimes referred to as the United Arab List), has been teetering on the threshold edge for weeks with no clear indication it will pass the mark. In some cases, it is the similarity of platforms that will split voters into below-threshold camps. Early polls predicted the demise of the Labor party, which was but a few decades ago by far the most powerful party in Israel. Labor’s lost support translated into more projected votes for the progressive Meretz, as former Labor voters went looking for a more promising left-wing ticket. Meretz was but a few weeks ago projected by multiple polls an average of five seats. But
the situation changed after left-wing superstar Merav Michaeli was elected Labor leader. With her signature flare and often aggressive organization tactics, she has been able to revive the party, now projected to win six or seven mandates, but that clearly came at Meretz’s expense, as the party has begun faltering in the polls. Both Labor and Meretz now face the unprecedented situation of vying for the same votes. It is not inconceivable that, once the dust settles, Israeli politics will be unable to accommodate two parties with near-identical platforms and both parties will fall by the wayside. In other instances, voters with niche interests will be whittled off their traditional groups. While factionalism has been a staple of Israeli politics for years, what has emerged in Israel over the more recent period is something even more extreme. Instead of single issue voters, Israel has seen a plethora of single issue parties, tickets on which their entire political sales pitch revolves around a myopic sliver of policy concerns. Take the Economic Party (Calcalit), the pop-up group founded by professor Yaron Zlicha back in December. Economist Zlicha made a reputation for himself as the Accountant
General of the Ministry of Finance in the early 2000s during Netanyahu’s tenure as Finance Minister. The sweeping reforms he enacted during that period are still perceived by the public as the cause for much of Israel’s economic and fiscal maturation. With the country in the throes of COVID lockdown and economic collapse, the time is perfect for Zlicha to step in. He quite easily advertised himself as the one to manage Israel’s economic recovery. Several groups of independent workers – the societal segment hit hardest by COVID restrictions – held up Zlicha as their savior. But a mere three months following its founding, polls indicate the Economic Party has lost the majority of its support and will likely not make it into power. Adding insult to injury, a key member of the party’s lineup, one of Zlicha’s prominent fellow academics Dr. Yoram Yuval, recently announced his withdrawal from the party. A similar storyline befell other small factions that sprang up in the last several months, such as Yisraelim, headed by Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai, and Rapeh, founded by the controversial Dr. Aryeh Avni. The misguided “single issue” branding is not only an impetus for the forma-

Any party looking to scrape by on March 23 needs to convince around 156,000 Israelis to vote for them. tion of new parties. It has also become a survival tactic for once stable factions to retain the image of electoral value before going under completely. This is the sad tale of the Blue and White party and its leader, former IDF chief Benny Gantz. In the last election, Gantz was a strong contender for the premiership and a real threat to the hegemony of Netanyahu and Likud. After breaking his campaign promise to not sit in a government with Netanyahu, Gantz began his slow and painful decline, losing political allies and hemorrhaging support-
ers. For a while now, polls have shown Blue and White barely avoiding the electoral cliff. This has led to numerous public calls from supporters (even some former colleagues) for Gantz to gracefully bow out. Gantz, however, as late as last week insists he still has a place at the policymaking table. Why is this? Well, as Gantz put it in a recent interview, he is the “only one” who is capable of stopping Netanyahu from pushing an immunity law, which would cancel corruption charges the prime minister is currently facing. This is indeed a sorrowful picture. The man who was
neck-and-neck with Netanyahu less than a year ago must now cling to the prevention of a single law as his only politically redeeming quality.
W
ith all the above factors in mind, the following scenario on March 23 is well within the realm of possibility: Most of the smaller parties refuse to pull out of the race. Four of them – Meretz, Labor, Blue and White, and the Economic party – each receive between three to two percent of the vote. Since none of these tickets would pass the
threshold, well over half a million votes could go to waste, translating into as many as 14 lost seats for the center-left. This is obviously an extreme case. But even if something remotely similar occurred, it could knock out a significant portion of the anti-Netanyahu bloc, currently estimated to garner 58 seats, already three seats shy of the needed majority. So yes, Netanyahu is right. It is his stable base
that has been and continues to be his greatest asset. Perhaps in no other election has it been so important. As many have already begun predicting, the fragmented Israeli center-left will likely lead to a decisive routing of the anti-Netanyahu camp, leaving the longest serving prime minister in the country’s history to divide the spoils amongst both his allies and those merely willing to tolerate him.

How did you happen to pick the winning numbers?” “I saw it in a dream. Six sevens appeared and danced before my eyes. Six times seven is 49, and that’s all there was to it,” said Yankel. “But six times seven is 42, not 49,” responded David. Yankel looked at him and said, “Huh? Alright, so you be the mathematician!”

For rich people, deciding that you’re a victim has many levels of appeal. For one thing, it gives meaning to your decadent, empty life. There are only so many expensive vacations you can take to St. Barts, only so many overpriced clothes you can buy, only so many dumb parties you can go to in Aspen before you begin to realize that none of it is enough. Dating Dialogue
What Would You Do If… Moderated by Jennifer Mann, LCSW of The Navidaters
Dear Navidaters,
I have been dating Sara for two months, and things have been going very well. I saw a future with her and was looking forward to spending chol hamoed Pesach in her hometown. As Pesach is approaching, we were discussing some date
ideas, and she casually mentioned going to a dog park with her family dog. I was absolutely stunned. In the two months I have known her she has not once mentioned

having a dog, and I feel betrayed as if she has been lying to me. This is a big piece of information to leave out. I catch myself asking what else she is hiding from me and has not mentioned until now? Besides the fact that I am allergic to dogs and am no longer looking forward to spending time in her family’s home, I feel betrayed that she never shared this piece of information sooner. Are my feelings valid? I seriously have thoughts of breaking up because of this. -Ben*

The Panel The Rebbetzin Rebbetzin Faigie Horowitz, M.S. en, you sound really angry. You are taking this piece of information very personally and having a very strong reaction. It’s not just about allergies. Keep the dog in context. A dog is just a dog. What is beneath your anger, suspicion, and stunned reaction? Look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself why you are reacting this way. How did you respond to this news? Were you able to manage your strong feelings? Do you have an anger management issue? think about Sara and be honest. Have you given her time and a listening ear? Can you say to yourself that you have heard her talk about her important relationships? Do you know who her close friends and mentors are? What do you know about her relationships with her parents and siblings? Does she have a relationship with the family dog or is the dog part of the family culture without her having a strong connection to the dog? If she feels very connected to the dog, it is an important relationship that should be explored. Hear her out. Talk about important relationships with her. What are other important relationships in her life? In her family? For some people, a family having a dog is symbolic of a foreign Jewish culture, almost. But that doesn’t seem to be your issue. had such a strong reaction of betrayal. Your lack of trust and paranoia surrounding unimportant, untold information raises questions on my end whether you are in a healthy place. Definitely seek professional counsel to delve into this matter before you get married. Much hatzlacha.
The Single Rivka Weinberg en, I agree with you that it’s a little weird that Sara has not mentioned her dog in the past two months you have been dating. Due to your dog allergy, I understand why this piece of information is significant to you and why you feel unsettled. However, I don’t think I would now jump to the conclusion that your entire relationship is built on betrayal and dishonesty.
B
It’s interesting that you say things are going well, you see a future with Sara, and you plan to spend time with her family over Pesach, and now you find out this piece of information about her dog and want to end the relationship. From my perspective, I want to recap what you just said: you’re dating a girl, find out later than you wanted to that she has a dog, and now want to end the relationship because she may be hiding other things. It sounds to me that things are going well and you’re nervous to take the next step, so you’re grasping onto a small thing and convincing yourself it’s larger than it really is. Before you potentially sabotage what sounds like a healthy and successful relationship thus far, take a hard look in the mirror and determine if your nerves are speaking or if this is actually a concern of yours. I suggest you speak with a rav or a mentor to help you
Dr. Jeffrey Galler og-gone it, are you saying that a promising relationship is in jeopardy? I’m trying to understand why her not mentioning the family dog is such a big issue for you. You can’t possibly know everything about each other in a mere two months. She probably also didn’t mention the goldfish that died when she was in the third grade. Why are you so shocked that the family dog hasn’t yet come up in conversation? OK, you explained that you are allergic to dogs, and you might need to take your aller-
gy pills when you visit her family. But your overreaction makes me suspect that you’re getting cold feet about the relationship. (By contrast, dogs have cold noses.) Of course, you should have a conversation with her about the dog issue, and see if she is sympathetic or is dismissive about your concerns. Her response will tell you a lot about her character. After five decades with my wife, I am still surprised by things I never knew about her (and about women, in general). But it’s never a big deal and doesn’t jeopardize our relationship. Carefully analyzing if you’re ready to commit to her is proper and healthy. But don’t let the dog become a bone of contention. If you pin the blame on the “tail” of the dog, you’re barking up the wrong tree. So, trust me when I say that you don’t need to raise the woof over this non-issue. And, remember, you can trust me. After all, I’m a dentist, and I’ve been treating canines for years. And, you don’t need to thank me, because it’s the leash I can do for you.
sumptions about Sara, would you simply ask her something along the lines of: “How come you never told me about Fido?” Perhaps I a m completely off here (it won’t be the first time), but I am getting a sense that you and Sara really need to work on your communication. She withheld the dog information from you, and you are quick to assume she may be hiding other things from you. I think that you and Sara need to have a good, old-fashioned conversation in which you express yourself gently and calmly to her. Let her know about your allergies and, again, find out why she never told you about the dog. I am so curious to know about the rest
of your relationship and whether or not this truly is an anomaly (in which case, maybe you can assume innocent until proven guilty if you really have feelings for Sara) or whether there are other breakdowns like these. Whatever happens, the most important thing a couple can ever do to try to ensure a successful relationship is to talk honestly. Things will come up in life. Little things and big things. It is so important to make sure that you and your partner have amazing, comfortable communication established before getting married! Rather than guess and wonder if your feelings are valid, get talking with Sara. I don’t know if you will like the answer, but I am hopeful that you will be glad that you did! Sincerely, Jennifer

ear Ben, My personal belief is that animals are a touchy subject. There are two camps. The animal lovers and the non-lovers/don’t-come-within-tenfeet-of-me people. Within the animal lover camp, of course, is typically a clear delineation between the cat people and the dog people, but I digress. Animal people usually cannot understand how a non-animal person cannot have the heart space to love an animal. And the non-animal lovers just don’t get the pull. Some are scared of dogs or cats or birds because of a bad experience, some are simply not inter-
ested in the time, cost and mess, and yet, others have allergies. I can understand why you may have been surprised to learn that Sara has a dog. I find it surprising that the dog never came up. That may or may not be indicative of the amount of sharing and getting to know each other you two have done thus far. It may be indicative that she simply forgot to tell you or that she does not have an affinity for the family pet and doesn’t have much to do with the dog. Before we jump the gun and make as-

How Will You Make
Different From All Others? This year, as we gather around the Passover table, many may be missing, many may be lost. Yet, like we’ve done throughout our history, we will retell the story of our ancestor’s struggles and their journey. The parallel between our own pandemic Seders and those of Mitzrayim is real. Fear and isolation have been with us for the past year. Yet, we retain our resilience and hope. We are beginning to emerge, much like Bnai Yisrael from Mitzrayim, into a new day. We believe that we can find strength in one another; none of us are alone.

Baghdad
By Nuta Yisrael Shurack
I
t was midday when an elderly traveler entered the Jewish quarter of Baghdad. The marketplace, where merchants from many lands sold their fabrics, spices and other wares, seemed strangely empty for such a day. He sighted the grandest building in the section and determined that must be the great synagogue. He continued his trek towards it until he entered its courtyard and sat down to rest, opening his small sack to take out a few dried figs to refresh his strength. Yet no sooner had he started his lunch than he became aware of a commotion from within the sanctuary. He peeked inside, and beheld a moving spectacle – hundreds of Jews fervently chanting Psalms amidst tears and sobs. “What has happened?” he asked of the first Jew whose attention he could catch. Hurriedly, and in a voice of desperation, the man told him the story as best he could. The Sultan had decreed that the Jewish people of Baghdad must produce a leader who could perform miracles as Moses had done. Since Moses was the leader of the Jewish people in Egypt, and he was able to do miracles, the Sultan expected the same from the leader of the Jews of Baghdad. If they would not produce such a miracle-maker, the Jews would be expelled from Baghdad. Therefore, all of the Jews were fasting and praying to Gd for salvation. In his calm and patient disposition, the wise traveler approached yet more Jews, until he had finally pieced togeth-
er the entire story: The Sultan’s chief advisor, Mustafa, was a vicious Jew-hater whose mission it was to destroy the Jews, or at least to have them banished from Baghdad. He had convinced the Sultan that the Jews were not only infidels for denying the prophet Mohammed, but that they were thieves and liars as well, deserving immediate expulsion. At first the Sultan was hesitant to believe Mustafa; however, the Sultan was told about what had happened when the Jews left Egypt and what Moses did to Pharaoh. He began to worry that perhaps one of the Jewish leaders of Baghdad would attack him with plagues and decided he did not want to take any chances. Therefore, he issued a decree that the Jews had to produce a leader like Moses or leave Baghdad immediately. The wise, elderly traveler sat in contemplation for several moments, and then approached one of the rabbis at the front of the synagogue and whispered in his ear. Soon all the leaders of the community were talking quietly, and then suddenly there was a loud clap on the lectern, and one of them spoke. “This man who is visiting our town says that he has a plan. He will travel to the Sultan immediately to try and save us. If he is successful, we will rejoice. However, if he fails, he will tell the Sultan that he acted alone. Meanwhile, we will continue to pray for his success!” The man headed for the palace, pounded on the entrance gate, and said, “I am a Jew who can do miracles, and I demand to see the Sultan imme-
diately.” Before long, he found himself face to face with the ruler of Baghdad. “So,” said the Sultan, “you claim you can do miracles like Moses. What can you do?” Dozens of people, from the baker and the court jester to the royal guards and advisors, stared at the old man with the white beard and piercing eyes. “If you would be so kind,” said he, “I will perform a miracle akin to those which Moses himself did. Before your very eyes, I will cut off a man’s head with a sword, and then put him back together and make him live!” The Sultan smiled nervously and glanced around, not knowing what to think or make of the situation. Perhaps the fellow was completely crazy. Or perhaps he was telling the truth. After all, he seemed extremely confident and spoke with such conviction. What if he was telling the truth? If he doubted him, then who knows what kind of wrath would be unleashed on the Sultan and his kingdom. The man continued, “There is but one condition. The man whose head I cut off must be truly wise. In fact, he must be the wisest man in the realm. If not, his head will not properly reattach.” Intrigued, the Sultan decided he must see for himself if the Jew was telling the truth. He looked around the room until his eyes fell on Mustafa, his chief advisor and the wisest man in the kingdom. Before the Sultan said a word, Mustafa cried out, “No, he is lying! The Jew is an impostor! He can’t
really cut someone’s head off and reattach it.” “That might be true,” said the Sultan, “but what if he is telling the truth and we don’t accommodate him? Surely you don’t want to put the whole kingdom at risk! After all, were you not the one who had advised me to expel the Jews, lest we be put in danger?” “Bring the sword immediately,” cried the Sultan. “Mustafa has volunteered!” With that, Mustafa began to tremble and yelled out, “No, I admit it. I was both wrong and very foolish. The Jewish people do not have extraordinary powers!” Mustafa ran out of the palace, never to be seen again. The Sultan annulled the decree, thanked the Jew for coming, and said that the Jews were welcome to live in Baghdad as long as they desired. The man returned to the synagogue to share the good news. Immediately, there was unbelievable rejoicing, and a banquet was held in honor of the miracle that Gd had done for His people. Then quietly and quickly, the old man slipped out and left the town before anyone could even get his name. Some people say that he was Elijah the Prophet. Some say he was a great mystic. Yet others believe that he was just a Jew who simply cared about his fellow Jews as much as he did about himself. The First Year of Marriage By Rabbi Azriel Hauptman
The Torah teaches us (Devarim 24, 5), “When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army or be assigned to it for any purpose. He shall be exempt one year for the sake of his household to give happiness to the woman he has married.” Many commentators derive from this Mitzvah a general obligation on a man to stay home during the first year of marriage and not travel without his wife for business or other purposes. There
are many ways that newlywed couples benefit from this directive, and in this article we will focus on one of those benefits, which is learning how to live with the unavoidable disappointment that results from dashed expectations. A psychological concept that relates to this topic is disappointment theory. Disappointment is an emotion that one feels when one’s expectations do not materialize. This theory states that disappointment is felt most acute-

ly when the following conditions are met: • One is in a situation with an uncertain outcome. • There were high hopes for a positive outcome. • The individual felt that he deserved a positive outcome. • It was a surprise that the expected outcome did not materialize. • The outcome was not a result of his personal actions. These factors almost always play themselves out in the inevitable dashed expectations that occur during the first year of marriage. One gets married with high hopes for the bliss that will follow, however without any real certainty. One feels that he deserves the positive outcome based on their assumptions of the role of each spouse in a marriage. The dashed expectations were a complete surprise, and the “negative” outcome was not the result of one’s personal actions (since all marriages have dashed expectations). For the purpose of illustration, here is an example. Rachel came from a family where her father payed the bills, mowed the lawn, and did all the grocery shopping. Additionally, her father would make her mother breakfast every Sunday morning. Furthermore, her parents always went to shul together on Shabbos morning. Rachel married a fellow who came from a family that had none of these “traditions”. Her husband expected her to do the shopping (“How should I know what to buy?”), to pay the bills (“After all, you spend the money!”), and that the lawn should be mowed by a landscaping company. He fully intended to daven at the early minyan on Shabbos morning and had no idea that he was doing anything
wrong. He certainly did not plan on making breakfast on Sunday morning as he had no idea how to even turn on the flame on the stovetop! Rachel experienced deep disappointment, despite the fact that she fully understood that expecting her husband to be a clone of her father is unrealistic. This is because disappointment is an emotion, and emotions tend to be based on our subconscious thoughts and beliefs. In Rachel’s situation, growing up with a specific model of marriage seared into her brain the expectation that her marriage would operate the same way. When it did not, the emotion of disappointment was inevitable. A sure-fire way to perpetuate negative emotions is to engage in the three A’s. Avoidance, avoidance, avoidance! When one avoids negative emotions, one cannot develop the wisdom and skills to move past and process those emotions. When one marries and is faced with the inevitable disappointment that follows, the easiest way to deal with it is to avoid it, which only makes the problem worse. By following the directive of staying home during the first year of marriage, the couple is forced to confront their unexpected negative emotions, process them, and grow from them. The result is a married couple that has realistic expectations, understands each other, and respects each other’s differences. This is a service of Relief Resources.
