Dear readers, A few weeks ago, my wife was reading our four-year-old a book describing how we all have two voices inside us, one pulling down and one pulling up. It describes in detail the things the yetzer tov says and the things the yetzer hara says. When done, my wife reminded our son to stay in bed, kissed him goodnight, and went into another room. Sixty seconds later, a little figure appeared next to her. When asked why he was out of bed, he answered, “’Cause I’m listening to my yetzer hara!” I learned two things: 1. The yetzer hara is already inside us. If we do too good a job describing him, it emboldens him. Perhaps instead we should focus most of our energy describing what the yetzer tov would do. 2. The fifth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Shalom Dovber, once said, “Just as it is a biblical commandment to put on tefillin every day, so too is it incumbent upon us to spend 30 minutes a day thinking how we can get the children to follow in the ways they are taught.” First, they are taught, and then as parents we need to figure out how to help them follow in these ways. The simplest way of doing this is by being a living example. If we are an example of what it means to be calm, our children will know the taste of being calm. If we are happy for others, our children will see the beauty of being gracious. If we value learning and study, they will cherish it as well. A story along these lines is told by Dr. Ira Weiss of Chicago. He was one of the Rebbe’s doctors beginning in 1977. Amongst other things, he says the Rebbe once told him that “just like it’s a mitzvah to put on tefillin, so too is it a mitzvah to drink tea with your wife every day. I do so myself.” Perhaps that’s the real way. When there’s harmony in the home, and the children see their parents being respectful to each other, they will then want to be a part of it and follow in their ways. May this Tisha B’av be the first one we will celebrate as a yom tov. Wishing you a wonderful Shabbos, Shalom

n executive order has been signed in Baltimore City suspending indoor dining services in bars and restaurants, as well as requiring masks indoors for anyone over the age of 2. The Mayor Jack Young’s executive order will take effect Friday at 5 p.m. Under the mayor’s executive order, restaurants and bars are permitted to
continue socially distanced outdoor dining, along with offering carryout and delivery services. “I have always stressed that my administration would continuously monitor the data related to COVID-19, and that I would not hesitate to tighten restrictions if the data indicated we should,” Mayor Young said. “Today, I am taking steps to help safeguard and protect our residents, business owners, and their employees. Additionally, those over the age of 2 must wear face coverings whenev-
er they are in public and maintaining a social distance of at least six feet is not possible. City residents are not required to wear face coverings while seated outdoors at a food service establishment. “These decisions were not easy, but are rooted in current data and trends we’re seeing in COVID-19 cases in Baltimore City,” Health Commissioner Dr. Letitia Dzirasa said. “When considered together, this information warrants the implementation of restrictions to help halt the further
spread of COVID-19.” The restriction on indoor dining and mandating of wearing cloth face coverings will remain in place for at least two weeks and will be evaluated by health officials daily. The Health Department will monitor the following COVID-19 markers: • Case counts • Case deaths • ICU and acute care hospital bed utilization • Case positivity rates • Number of tests performed
New Organization Offers Free Plug & Play Tablets to Hospital Patients and their Family Members
W
hile the Baltimore Jewish community remains fortunate, bli ayn hara, to have had few people hospitalized due to the virus, all
hospital patients have been affected by the limitations on and even complete banning of most hospital visitation. The importance of family remaining with a hospitalized patient cannot be
overstated, yet this has been mostly impossible for the last few months. WellTab™️ is a new non-profit organization providing the next best thing – free plug & play tablets to patients and their family members in a growing number of locations throughout the country (about twenty so far) and a few more in other countries, when family can’t be physically close by. WellTab tablets help patients and families communicate easily from a safe distance. Keeping families connected with patients helps patients feel more motivated to survive and helps families feel more at ease about the wellbeing of their loved one. Unique features of WellTab tablets include: Continuous Availability: The tablets are active 24/7 and can be the only form of contact a patient has with his/her closest of kin in hospitals and nursing facilities. Privacy & Security: The tablets securely connect one patient tablet to one family tablet. There is not a potentially vulnerable online meeting that can attract trouble makers. Hospital Friendly: Hospital staff can easily pause the tablets for privacy
or protocol purposes. Autopilot: Hospital staff are busy saving lives. The tablets have an autopilot mode so they do not need a nurse to help once they are plugged in near the patient. 24x7 Support: Technical support is available 24x7 (Yes, that is 7 because poskim have determined that this is hatzalas nefashos) to help with any issues. Baltimore Hatzalah ambulances are equipped with WellTab tablets that are configured for use at participating local hospitals. Tablets have already been used at Sinai Hospital, Johns Hopkins and Levendale locally. The WellTab team has already received approval for tablet use in all the major New York City hospitals among many other places and they will help obtain additional approvals from other local Baltimore facilities as needed. Just to highlight one local example, a Baltimore family had been unable to see or communicate with their elderly mother, who is at Levindale, for several months. WellTab helps them feel reconnected to her and enables the family to meaningfully communicate with her at any time. Local Baltimore families of hospital patients who do not receive tablets through Hatzalah can obtain tablets by calling 917-999-0102. This is a free service. After hospitalization, the tablets are returned to a local WellTab distribution center. More information about WellTab is available at https://

Maryland Added To NY/NJ Mandatory Quarantine List
N
ew York and New J e r s e y have added 10 states to the list from which travelers are required to self-quarantine for 14 days, and Connecticut is expected to follow suit. The newly-added states are Alaska, Delaware (re-added), Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Virginia and Washington (re-added). Minnesota has been removed from the list. New York plans to levy a $2,000 fine against certain travelers who leave airports in the state without submitting a form that
says where the travelers are arriving from and where they’re going. Governor Andrew Cuomo said the fines would apply to travelers from the list of states – including Texas and Florida – who are required to quarantine for 14 days under New York’s travel advisory. New Jersey and Connecticut do not have this rule in place. These are the 31 states currently on the list: Maryland Added To NY/NJ Mandatory Quarantine List • Alabama • Alaska • Arizona • Arkansas • California

Eruv of Baltimore Announces New Eruv Expansion Along Green Summit Road By: BJLife Newsroom BaltimoreJewishLife.com/Jeff Cohn
A
new Eruv boundary has been constructed all along Green Summit Road between Greenspring Avenue and Old Pimlico Road (see map) – the entire area south of Green Summit Road is now included within the Baltimore Eruv (including Summit Park Elementary School and the grounds surrounding the school). Very important note: Only the sidewalk on the south-side of Green
Summit Road is included within the Eruv – not the north-side sidewalk! It is now possible to walk on Shabbos from Greenspring Avenue all the way across Green Summit Road to Moses Montefiore Anshe Emunah Synagogue. And, all the homes now included within the new Eruv boundary can be accessed from the south-side sidewalk of Green Summit Road. Many thanks to Eruv of Baltimore, Inc. for undertaking this project. Special thanks to R’ Yonah Ribiat for managing this project and overseeing it’s construction.

The Jewish Community Softball League (JCSL) by “Shimz Cars” season begins
O
n Sunday, July 5th the JCSL by Shimz Cars kicked off their season. All teams arrived promptly to the PeoplesBank fields at Reisterstown Regional Park, ready to partake in the slow pitch league. Prior to the opening week, the league’s 96 players were divided between eight teams via a draft system, ensuring parity in competition. The teams are each named for their individual team sponsors: Donny Ankri Architects, Fired Up Promotions, Kaylah Diamonds, LBSI, Levin & Gann, Seven Seas Sushi, Stutman Chiropractic, and The Kitchen Spot. All teams will compete for seven regular season games, with the top four teams facing off in a round of playoffs. The playoffs winners then battle each other in the Premier Financial championship, where each team will vie to take home the Premier Financial Trophy. Thank you to Yosef Chaim Weil (of Impulse Productions) for the photography that accompanies this article. ---------------------------------------------------------------------Week 1

Fired Up Promotions Seven Seas Sushi
10 10
It was a grinding game between Seven Seas and Fired Up Promotions, with both teams battling all game to put up runs. Heading into the 9th, Seven Seas carried a 10-7 lead. Fired Up entered the bottom of the 9th with some work to do. Ahron Leib Wealcatch led off the 9th with a single, followed by a Max Cantor double, which brought the shrewd and incorrigible veteran, Noam Shiman to the plate. Shiman hit a sac fly, David Flamm hit a double to score Cantor, and after a few more plays, Fired Up found themselves down 10-9 with two outs. It came down to Ben “The Professor” Blackman who hit a scorching ground ball through the infield to score Flamm and tie the game. (When asked about his game-tying hit, Blackman turned the questioning on the interviewer, demand-
ing to know “What happened?”)
Donny Ankri Architects Kaylah Diamonds
11 11
If you like hold-your-breath, softball, you would have enjoyed this one between Kaylah Diamonds and Donny Ankri Architects. Drama started early with a highlight reel catch by Architect CF Levi Zaslow, who pulled in a sensational over the shoulder catch. Without time to react, Levi crashed into the fence, face first, while holding onto the ball. The Architects struck first with 2 runs in the 1st but Kaylah stormed back with 6 runs in the 2nd. The Architects returned the favor with runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th, leveraging clutch hits by Donny Ankri, Josh Zaslow, Howie Friedman, Modo Artman and Asher “The Beard” Sondhem. In the top of the 9th, Kaylah needed 3 runs to tie the game. Kaylah tied it up with a chance to take the lead but with 2 outs and a man on 3rd, Sondhelm made a marvelous diving outfield catch to end the game.
Levin & Gann The Kitchen Spot
8 3
Levin & Gann was determined to build on its momentum from last year’s championship season. L&G used patience, shut down pitching, and stingy defense to come from behind for an 8-3 victory. It took about 5 innings for the offense to shake off the rust but once they got going, they never looked back. L&G was down 2-0 through 5 but scored runs in the 6th, 7th, and 8th, while shutting down The Kitchen Spot
for 6 straight innings.
LBSI Stutman Chiropractic
19 11
The boys of summer were back this week as Stutman Chiropractic took on LBSI in a heavyweight matchup. Pitchers Moshe Stutman and Aaron Adler both looked sharp, issuing few walks while keeping the ball in the park. Both lineups still managed to pile on runs though in a nailbiter contest into the late innings. After LBSI seemed to pull ahead with a 12-7 lead going into the eighth, Stutman Chiropractic strung together a one-out rally to pull within one run in the final frame. The defending pennant winners were able to find the gaps and claimed victory with a 19-11 final. Week 2
Kaylah Diamonds Seven Seas Sushi
11 7
Seven Seas took a 2-0 lead in the first but Kaylah Diamonds responded early to get the game to 6-2. A Seven Seas’ player came to the plate trying his very best to earn his sushi roll bounty for the week, only to hit a weak grounder to the catcher who defied all of Tom Emanski’s teachings and overthrew the ball to first base. Unfortunately for Seven Seas Sushi, the story did not end there. A surging comeback was in full swing when the same Seven Seas’ superstar rounded third without touching the bag. Kaylah’s Adam Ben-Zev immediately challenged the play, selling the case to the Umpire (just as Lou Pinella did in his heyday.) After the play was overturned,
Kaylah Diamonds protected their turf the rest of the way while going on to squeeze out five more runs - a true testament that Diamonds are forever. Game ball was awarded to Richard Buck who made two gold glove worthy plays at the mound while leading the team with two walks as a hitter.
The Kitchen Spot Donny Ankri Architects
19 7
The Kitchen Spot won this one with pitching, hitting, and defense.
Stutman Chiropractic Levin & Gann
13 6
Yehuda Roll led the way with 4 hits as Stutman Chiropractic picked up their first win of the season. Mark Stutman added 2 hits and two RBIs while pitching a great game and his team supported him in the field behind him. Stutman Chiropractic put the game away with a 5 run 7th, featuring a “Little League home run” by Hillel Stutman, who dashed around the bases while the ball trailed wildly behind him.
LBSI Stutman Chiropractic
18 6
Fresh off their week 1 win, LBSI was positively fired up and brought the energy again with a relentless attack through 8 innings en route to an 18-6 victory over Fired Up Promotions. With some lockdown pitching by perennial Cy Young contender Aaron Adler and sparkling defense in left by Jeremy Bittan, LBSI kept Fired Up in check as they cruised to their second win of the season.

Maryland’s Economic Recovery Continues: State Adds 68,300 Jobs in June, Unemployment Rate Drops to 8% By: Staff Reporter BaltimoreJewishLife.com/Jeff Cohn
T
he U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics today reported that the State of Maryland added 68,300 jobs in June, and the unemployment rate decreased to 8.0%—nearly 28% lower than the national unemployment rate and better than 32 other states in the nation. In May and June, as the state began its COVID-19 recovery, Maryland gained 96,700 jobs. Maryland’s unemployment rate is the lowest in the region, including Virginia at 8.4% and the District of Columbia at 8.6%.
“Our economy is open, recovering, and doing better than many other states, but only the people of Maryland can keep our state open for business by continuing to follow public health guidance,” said Governor Hogan. “In Maryland, we were able to keep more than 70 percent of our economy open throughout this entire crisis without shutting down, and 98 percent of our economy is now open and able to operate in a safe way. We have already gained back nearly 97,000 jobs, and our unemployment rate has stayed much lower than the national rate, far better than most states in America, and is the very best among all the states in our region.” On Wednesday, State Treasurer
Nancy Kopp announced that the three major bond rating agencies have reaffirmed the State’s AAA bond rating, all with stable outlooks. Also this week, Governor Hogan announced that the State of Maryland has uncovered a massive and sophisticated criminal enterprise involving more than 47,500 fraudulent unemployment insurance claims in Maryland and totaling over $501 million. Maryland’s swift and decisive actions to notify federal authorities and expose this illegal scheme helped shed light on related fraudulent criminal activity in other states across the country. The Maryland Department of Labor continues to coordinate on the ongoing investigation with the U.S. Attorney’s
Office and the DOL-OIG. According to today’s report, the Leisure and Hospitality sector experienced the most growth with an increase of 23,200 jobs. The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities sector increased by 14,900 jobs from the Retail Trade (10,100); Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities (3,200); and Wholesale Trade (1,600) subsectors. Other sectors that experienced growth include: Other Services (9,000); Education and Health Services (7,900); Mining, Logging, and Construction (5,700); Manufacturing (2,300); and Professional and Business Services (1,300).

What makes your business unique? Northbrook Financial is built on the foundational belief that everyone should be able to receive objective, concise, and actionable advice to reach their financial goals. Founded by experienced CFP® and CPA professionals, our strong technical background, and years of experience across tax, planning, and investment management puts us in a unique position to help our clients accomplish their goals and simplify their financial lives. Further, we are a fee only firm that acts in a fiduciary capacity for our clients. system. I am hopeful for the future, as it seems schools are starting to incorporate financial literacy more and more into their curriculum. The best thing anyone can do to improve their financial life is to learn, plan, and act. Here are some principles that we use when working with clients: 1. “Know your business” Be truly clear and honest with yourself about what you make, what you spend and make sure you always live within your means. 2. “Pay yourself first” Set-up automatic transfers and treat your savings and investment accounts as a part of your monthly expenses. Saving and investing should not be something that happens “only when I have extra money that month.” 3. “Invest early and invest often”: Let your money work for you through compound interest and consistent market participation. It is highly unlikely that you can time the market’s high and lows, and it is even more unlikely that you can do so on a regular basis, but the magic of compound interest can be a powerful tool in your wealth building toolbox and the earlier you start the more powerful that tool will work for you.

Israel Pilots Instant COVID Detection Test, Expected to be Operational by this Fall A pilot program has been launched for a rapid COVID-19 detection test, employing a revolutionary device that uses light waves to analyze molecular content. Israeli startup Newsight is collaborating with Sheba Medical Center to identify and classify evidence of coronavirus in the body in less than a second, using a sample of fluid – blood serum or saliva. Concrete results of the trial are expected within the coming months. Newsight employs spectral technology (using light waves) to develop advanced image sensor chips for 3D machine vision and spectral analysis. The sensors have been integrated in dozens of devices and solutions in various fields including robotics and automotive industrial manufacturing. The use of spectral technology to detect the presence of pathogens is not new, but to date, has necessitated a cumbersome, costly device. The new innovation being piloted with Sheba involves a cost-effective chip. Experts from Sheba’s Infectious and Tropical Disease departments are
already working with Newsight. Initial studies of the device’s ability to identify the coronavirus has shown an accuracy of close to 100%. Newsight and Sheba’s ARC Innovation Center intend to establish a joint company that will make the instant COVID detection test commercially available to the medical community worldwide. “Newsight is yet another outstanding example of how ARC@Sheba Medical Center and the Israeli start-up ecosystem are working in tandem to reinvent existing technology to battle the scourge of COVID-19,” said Dr. Eyal Zimlichman, Chief Medical and Innovation Center at Sheba. Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer is the largest medical center in the Middle East. It is the only hospital in Israel that offers treatment for acute care as well as rehabilitation on one campus, and is at the forefront of medical treatments, patient care, research, innovation and education. In 2019 & 2020 Newsweek magazine ranked Sheba as one of the top ten hospitals in the world.
Meet CoronavirusFriendly Tel Aviv Noodle Shop A Tel Aviv noodle joint thinks that it has found the post-coronavirus business model. With most restaurants forced to close due to the rising rates of infection, Tel Aviv’s ‘Go Noodles’ has found a novel way to operate: Pre-

venting staff and customers from having any physical contact throughout their dining experience.
Go Noodles’ new setup features a giant touch screen at the entrance of the restaurant that is to be used by customers for ordering. After the food is prepared, it is placed in a glass locker while the code to open it is sent to the customers via SMS. Done properly, the innovative system ensures that there is virtually no risk of catching the deadly pandemic. Servers do not interact with customers, the store does not accept cash, and all orders must be paid for online. “I came up with this concept a year ago, with no connection to the coronavirus, from a business and financial need,” said Shmulik Gal, the restaurant’s manager. “As fate would have it, the coronavirus broke out a few months ago and this thing gained major significance.” Gal had originally come up with the idea prior to the global COVID-19 outbreak. The Tel Avivian figured that with rising overhead costs, operating a “bare bones” system with no servers could save money. But with eateries limited in how they could open for business, Gal realized that the time had come to turn his vision into a reality. “People are looking for less contact with others, less intermingling, less touching,” Gal said. “I think this thing has a lot of strength and people will embrace it.”
Google, Apple, Erase ‘Palestine’ From Maps Palestinian activists are furious amid claims that both Google and Apple erased the ‘State of Palestine’ from their apps. As of last Thursday, a search of
the word “Palestine” in Google Maps yields only the West Bank and Gaza Strip without any additional identifying information. However, the two aforementioned technology giants had never listed Palestine in the first place. After the discovery, Palestinian and other left-wing activists circulated an online petition demanding that Google and Apple recognize ‘Palestine’ as a country. “We’re all deleting Google Maps until it acknowledges the #FreePalestine’s rightful place on the map,” tweeted prominent activist Issa Amro from Ramallah. Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Riyad Al Maliki fired off an official complaint to the tech behemoths that blasted them for submitting to Israel’s “pressure and blackmail.” “Removing Palestine from the maps was not a coincidence. Rather it was a prelude to the implementation of Washington’s Middle East plan and the last nail in the coffin for the Palestinian issue,” said Maliki. The minister added that Google and Apple “may be able to remove the name of Palestine from the maps, but they will not be able to remove it from the souls of the Palestinians, no matter how long it takes.” The Hamas terror group also weighed in, stating through a spokesperson that the two companies are complicit in “a denial of historical facts and a move that contradicts international and humanitarian laws ... making it possible for Israel to continue and violate international laws and decisions.” The current controversy is not the first time Google has been accused of erasing the State of Palestine. Four years ago, the search engine giant was condemned by the Forum of Palestinian Journalists ‘condemning’ Google for not marking Palestine on its map service.

The IDF reportedly neutralized the drone by deploying a top-secret commando unit whose operatives are schooled in advanced hacking capabilities that is meant to be used against tactical drones on the battlefield. According to Hezbollah, the drone succeeded in capturing footage of IDF positions before it was brought down. Lebanese newspapers published photos showing the deployments of Israeli soldiers that was videoed from the drone prior to the hijacking. The IDF has been taking Hezbollah’s drone capabilities extremely seriously and frequently dispatches air force jets and field units to commandeer the devices before they can enter Israeli airspace. In Syria, Hezbollah has demonstrated its expertise with UAVs and drones, including developing the use of “suicide drones” designed to blow up tanks and vehicles on the ground.
Bolton Warns That Trump will Turn his Back on Israel Former National Security Advisor John Bolton warned that President Donald Trump was liable to turn on
Israel should he win a second term. In an interview with Israel’s Army Radio, the former senior Trump administration official said that a president without any pressure to be reelected would be free to embark on policies that would hurt Israel. While acknowledging that Trump had largely promoted pro-Israel policies during his first term, Bolton said that this was mainly an effort to please his base.
Should he win a second term, Bolton continued, Trump would have more leeway to embrace Iran similarly to how he engaged North Korea to the detriment of its southern neighbor. According to Bolton, who has since written a tell-all book about the mercurial president, Israel needs to act in its own interests until the US goes to the polls in November and disregard any pushback from Trump. “Trump is motivated much more by domestic American politics which is why if it turns out he is reelected in November, we don’t know what he is going to do once he is freed from electoral constraints,” Bolton said. “Which is why anyone who is concerned about what happens in the Middle East should worry about what happens in a second term.” “I think the next few months are an optimal time for Israel to act in its own national security interests,” Bolton said. When asked if Biden would be good for Israel, Bolton replied that both the Democrat and Trump were equally bad for the Jewish State’s wellbeing. He also went on record supporting the recent series of suspicious blasts at Iranian nuclear sites but said that he had no idea who was behind it. “I don’t claim to have any special knowledge as to how these various events happened. They seem clearly aimed at the Iranian nuclear and ballistic missile programs,” Bolton said. “I think whoever is doing it, they have my complete support. Maybe it’s dis-

Anti-Netanyahu Demonstrations Turn Violent
Dozens of protesters were arrested after demonstrations against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu turned violent on Saturday evening. For months, thousands of self-employed Israelis and leftist activists have been rallying on Saturday evenings throughout the country against Netanyahu. In recent weeks, the protests have swelled in both number and intensity amid the country’s worst economic crisis in its history.
In Jerusalem, the protests began in Paris Square and poured into nearby streets. Chanting “Corrupt, Go Home,” throngs of people marched to the Prime Minister’s Residence where they scuffled with law enforcement. Fifteen people were arrested after attacking police officers and were denied bail. In Tel Aviv, thirteen protesters were taken into custody after blocking traffic, hurling heavy objects at police officers, and lighting dumpsters on fire. Police called in reinforcements after the throngs turned violent and refused to disperse. The protesters belong to a slew of assorted groups with different objectives. While the “No Way” NGO wants Netanyahu to resign due to his multiple criminal indictments, the ‘Shulmanim’ movement wants increased financial assistance to self-employed Israelis whose businesses were gutted by the coronavirus. The scenes of so many people crammed together during the worldwide coronavirus pandemic led Likud lawmakers to call for a ban on rallies

to prevent increased infection. “To approve mass demonstrations that pose a health hazard to all Israeli citizens, while closing many businesses that adhere to the guidelines on the other, is absurd,” said Likud MK Miki Zohar. “The government must decide: Open the whole economy including mass demonstrations full of unjustified hatred or immediately stop these sponsored demonstrations in the same way they decided to close the businesses.” Justice Minister Avi Nissenkoren rejected Zohar’s demand, writing that he would do everything in his power to safeguard the “sacrosanct” right to protest as is customary in a democracy. “Even under limitations, we will ensure civil rights,” Nissenkorn wrote on Facebook. “The fundamentals of democracy are important during regular times, and even more important during emergencies.”

Netanyahu to Fire COVID-19 Panel Head
David Flamm

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would fire MK Yifat Shaha-Biton from her post as the head of the Knesset’s COVID-19 panel on Saturday. Netanyahu’s decision to axe the young lawmaker came after she defied the premier and refused to shutter gyms, restaurants, and beaches. Shasha-Biton had told Channel 13’s ‘Meet The Press’ television program on Saturday evening that she would not accede to the prime minister’s orders unless he presented data showing that gyms were known causes of infection. Despite Netanyahu’s anger, Shasha-Biton dug in her heels and maintained that she would not destroy the livelihoods of so many Israelis if there was no obvious health imperative justifying it. In a series of tweets
after being fired, the Likud legislator declared that she was prepared to be removed from her senior position if it meant assisting struggling small business owners. “I am a member of the coalition and respect the decisions of the government. A key part of the Knesset’s work is to review the work of the government. When there are mistakes, they need to be corrected,” tweeted Shasha-Biton. “My job is to examine the best ways to fight the virus, to maintain the mental and physical health of the citizens and to save the livelihoods of tens of thousands of workers,” she added. “I entered politics for one purpose: to serve the people of Israel. If I have to pay a personal price for it, I will accept it with love. Shasha-Biton’s refusal marks a rare case of public insubordination vis a vis Netanyahu from a serving Likud member. The clash between the two politicos comes amid rising public anger against sudden large-scale shutdowns meant to combat the spread of the coronavirus that are not backed by data or medical opinions. On Thursday, Netanyahu ordered hotels and restaurants to shutter for the weekend and after 5 P.M. on weekdays effective immediately. However, the timetable for the closures was delayed until Tuesday after hundreds of establishments signed a petition vowing to defy the order. Saying that the lockdown was thrust upon them with no notice, the restaurants said that they would lose considerable sums of money from the food they were now forced to throw away.

The Week In News Patricia and Mark McCloskey, two lawyers from St. Louis, became a national news story after he waved his M-16A2 rifle and her a vintage pistol at Black Lives Matter looters. The couple have found themselves under investigation ever since by St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner.
Now, Gardner has filed a charge of unlawful use of a firearm against the couple. The unlawful use of a weapon charge is a felony and carries a maximum four-year prison sentence. Gardner said in a statement that, “it is illegal to wave weapons in a threatening manner at those participating in nonviolent protest, and while we are
fortunate this situation did not escalate into deadly force, this type of conduct is unacceptable in St. Louis.” However, the Mccloskeys are unlikely to receive prison time after Missouri Governor Mike Parson said that he would pardon the McCloskeys. Attorney General Eric Schmitt also said that he will dismiss the charges, which he called a form of “political prosecution.” The couple has since been turned into a cause célèbre for conservatives across the United States who alleged that the McCloskeys are being punished for defending themselves. President Trump is said to be closely following the Mcloseky’s legal situation and recently spoke to Parson about the saga. During the phone conversation last week, Trump told Parson that he “understands the situation in St. Louis and how out of control it is for a prosecutor to let violent criminals off and not do their job and try to attack law-abiding citizens.” Missouri Senator John Hawley has also called on the U.S. Department
of Justice to probe Circuit Attorney Kimberly M. Gardner’s office for civil rights violations after she announced her intention to prosecute the McCloskeys. “Targeting law-abiding citizens who exercise constitutionally protected rights for investigation & prosecution is an abuse of power,” wrote Hawley. At aTrump campaign livestream on Saturday, the McCloskeys recounted the dramatic moments that catapulted them into the heart of a national debate. “I thought within seconds we were going to be overrun. That... they’d be in the house, they’d be setting fires, they’d be killing us and that would be the end of things,” said Mark McCloskey on Trump’s program. “The so-called peaceful protest kinda ended when they smashed through the gate into my neighborhood and poured into my front yard,” he added. Patricia, meanwhile, related that they had frantically tried to call the police, only to grab their firearms after realizing that no one would be showing up.

Rosenblum. “They not only make it impossible for people to assert their First Amendment rights to protest peacefully, they also create a more volatile situation on our streets.” Rosenblum added that using militarized agents are “entirely unnecessary and out of character with the Oregon way.” “The federal administration has chosen Portland to use their scare tactics to stop our residents from protesting police brutality and from supporting the Black Lives Matter movement,” she said. “Every American should be repulsed when they see this happening. If this can happen here in Portland, it can happen anywhere.” The lawsuit came after video clips surfaced showing heavily armed and masked agents detaining Antifa rioters in Portland and putting them in unmarked cars. The vehicles then speed off to an unknown location. The agents also used crowd dispersal methods such as tear gas and rubber bullets to battle rioters who attempted to destroy a courthouse and police station in the Oregon city. The agents belonged to a patchwork of outside agencies including the Department of Homeland Security, the Customs and Border Patrol, and the US Marshals Service and are operating without the approval of the mayor, the state, or local municipalities. Portland has been the epicenter of the far-left rioting that has been sweeping the US over the past few months and authorities have been attempting to restore control over the city. Yet the use of such militarized agents, who did not sport identification tags as is customary among police, raised an uproar among Democrats who accused the Trump administration of using “stormtrooper tactics” to quell dissent. However, Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf defended the use of militarized agents against what he said was “a violent mob of anarchists,” saying that the police refrained from identifying themselves in order to prevent harm to their families from radical activists. Wolf blamed Portland officials for failing to “restore order”. According to Wolf, the feeble response the rioters got “emboldened the violent mob as it escalates violence day after day.”
Federal Judge Attacked in Home, Son Killed
A gunman shot and killed the son of federal judge Esther Salas and injured her husband in her Newark home on Sunday evening. According to reports, 20-year-old Daniel Anderl was shot after opening the door to the killer in the Salas family’s home in North Brunswick. Mark Anderl, Salas’ husband, was also shot multiple times and remains in critical condition. Salas herself was unharmed in the attack, which appears to be the work of a professional assassin. The shooter entered the house dressed as a FedEx agent and fled after the murder. “We are aware of the media reports and are fully cooperating with investigating authorities,” confirmed Fed Ex Spokesman Jim Masilak. The FBI has opened an investigation and have refrained from revealing if they have any leads. “The FBI is investigating a shooting that occurred at the home of Judge Esther Salas in North Brunswick Township, New Jersey earlier this evening, July 19. We are looking for one subject and ask that anyone who thinks they may have relevant information please call FBI Newark at 973-792-3001,” said the FBI Newark office. We are working closely with our state and local partners and will provide additional updates when available.” While the motive for the shocking crime remains unclear, Salas had recently been assigned to a case involving the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. In a press conference, North Brunswick Mayor Francis Womack said that “as a judge, she had threats from time to time but everyone is saying that recently there had not been any.” Salas was appointed by President Barack Obama to the bench in 2012 and became the first Hispanic woman to serve on New Jersey’s federal circuit.

The Week In News Meet Joe Biden’s Head of Jewish Outreach
With election day only 4 months away, Democratic contender Joe Biden has tapped 35 year-old Aaron Keyak to be his head of Jewish outreach. An Orthodox San Francisco native, Keyak will oversee a vast campaign that seeks to convince his Jewish brethren to cast their vote to Biden. In a press release, the Biden campaign said that Keyak “will build and manage a national outreach program to support the political objectives of the campaign.” Keyak will also advise Biden on
Jewish-related issues, including but not limited to the US-Israel relationship, rising anti-Semitism, and maintaining the constitutional separation of church and state. “One of the great things about the Jewish community is the wide range of issues we care about,” Keyak told JTA. “It keeps me busy.” Despite the fact that the US Jewish community commonly votes Democrat, Keyak said that the upcoming election is bringing unprecedented challenges to the party. This includes Trump’s strong support for Israel and anti-Semitism among lawmakers such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar. “We have to campaign like we’re a few points down,” said Keyak. “We have to know we’re doing everything we can to build a broad coalition in the Jewish community and the general public to show that Donald Trump isn’t America.” Keyak is a veteran political operative who has worked for a slew of senior Democrats such as Congressman Jerald Nadler. Previously, he ran
the Jewish outreach effort for Barack Obama’s successful 2012 reelection bid and headed the National Jewish Democratic Council. In 2014, Keyak founded Bluelight Strategies, a top consulting firm that caters to progressive Jewish organizations.

Missing Dog Made 60-Mile Journey to Family’s Former Home
A dog that was missing from her Kansas home for a week turned up at her family’s former home – 60 miles away in Missouri. A family in Lawson, MO was surprised to find a dog on their porch and even more surprised when they checked the canine’s microchip and discovered that the 4-year-old golden retriever belonged to the house’s for  mer residents. They discovered Cleo’s owner, Drew Feedback, had posted about the missing canine on Facebook about a week earlier and the reunion was arranged - about 60 miles away. Both families said they are at a loss to explain Cleo’s long journey which would have required the canine to cross a river to make it back to her former home. S.COM

your Pet An Israeli online insurance company named Lemonade Inc. launched a new product – pet health insurance. Designed exclusively for cats and dogs, the new insurance product joins Lemonade’s homeowners and renter’s insurance policy offerings. Lemonade’s pet health insurance starts at $12 per month and is available to both new and existing Lemonade customers.
“Now, pet parents in 33 U.S. states can get AI-powered, socially impactful coverage for their four-legged family members, Lemonade said in its statement. “Creating the dream pet health insurance from scratch has been a journey in design, customer experience, and empathy, said Shai Wininger, COO of Lemonade. “As pet parents ourselves, we found the existing options to be lacking, so we built a product for cats and dogs from the ground up. This means an insurance policy that’s short and easy to understand, and a user experience created with the pet, and their parent, at its core. “The US pet insurance market is valued at a couple of billion dollars, and with the increasing number of pet adoptions coupled with rising veterinary costs, we believe this market can grow rapidly, said Daniel Schreiber, Lemonade CEO. “Lemonade’s unique take on pet health insurance couldn’t be easier, or faster. This includes getting claims paid in seconds, accessing preventative care, receiving live health and wellness recommendations, and supporting animal nonprofits all from the comfort of your phone. Few insurers offer any of these features, and none offers them all.

Torah Thought
How Are You Doing By Rabbi Zvi Teichman
There is so much suffering in the world. This is all a consequence of Churban. As long as the Temple is not restored we are destined to be challenged with distress. Perhaps the most difficult of all pain is that of mental anguish. I had heard about an individual who was suffering from both severe cancer and major depression who expressed the sentiment that despite the tortuous treatments associated with his cancer if he had to choose between the two he would prefer the physical ordeal any day over the emotional pain of his depression. Everyone on some level will ex-
perience emotional turmoil, it is part of human development. Through the healthy processing of these emotions it forges our character and makes us great. Have you ever wondered as to where do we insert in our prayers to succeed in this quest for this most vital need? Where do we express our fervent hopes for mental stability and happiness and for G-d to save us from excruciating emotional collapse? We pray three times a day והסר ממנו יגון ואנחה, remove from us sorrow and groan. This we are taught encompasses all emotional deprivation and

its associated suffering. '(סידור אשי ישראל עפ"י הגר"א פי )אבני אליהו Yet strangely, this request finds itself in the blessing for the restoration of justice. In the eleventh blessing of the Amida we recite: השיבה שופטינו כבראשונה ויועצינו כב־ תחלה, Restore our judges as in earliest times and our counselors as at first והסר ממנו יגון ואנחה, remove from us sorrow and groan ומלוך עלינו אתה ד' לבדך בחסד וברח־ מים, and speedily reign over us - You, G-d, alone - with kindness and compassion The question that begs though is: How does the restoration of ‘judges’ and ‘counselors’ like in the ‘good ol days’, cure emotional stress? • The portion of Devarim is always read on Shabbos Chazon, the Shabbos that precedes Tisha B’Av. Although we avoid any public association with mourning on the Shabbos, nevertheless, there is one verse we read this Shabbos to the mournful tune of Eicha. How can I alone carry your contentiousness, your burdens, and your quarrels?)(דברים א יב This verse depicts Moshe’s frustration in his limited ability to deal effectively with the numerous cases he would have to deal with and resolve. The Torah goes on to describe his appointing of qualified legal assistants to aid him in this overwhelming task. Why is this verse so significant in the context of the travails of the Churban and how does it relate to the sorrowful melody of Eicha? • The problems in life that affect us psychologically are often the product of skewed thinking. When a person undergoes trauma, disappointment or loss, it clouds one’s ability to think clearly. Only when we start to understand our reactions can we prevent them from misleading our thought processes. Anger and the need for revenge, unless understood properly, can lead a person to react disproportionately to what justice demands. And so it is with the wide variety of emotions that are provoked by different circumstances in life. If only we could maintain a healthy and brutally honest perspective both from a religious standpoint vis-a-vis G-d’s intimate involvement in every detail of our life, as well as from the human emotion viewpoint, remaining con-
scious of man’s frailty in overreacting, we would be able to deflect ‘sorrow and groan’. The Midrash reveals that the ‘judges and counselors’ of the earlier times refers to none other than Moshe and Aharon as well as Dovid and Shlomo. Judges are not only purveyors of ‘truth’ but they also possess the ability to connect with the people on an emotional level. Precisely because they can effectively validate those who are troubled, conveying warmth and understanding, are they then able to present the ‘truth’ of any situation and have it accepted by their now willing ‘friends’ who will trust their judgment and the truth of Torah. Maimonides when listing the attributes of a judge adds that “he must be a person who is beloved by people at large, and must have a good reputation. When relating Moses’ statements concerning the appointment of judges, the Torah mentions... ‘Beloved by your tribes’. This refers to those who are appreciated by people at large. What will make them beloved by people? Conducting themselves with a favorable eye and a humble spirit, being good company, and speaking and conducting their business with people gently.” )(סנהדרין פ"ב ה"ז Moshe, Aharon, Dovid and Shlomo were all renowned not only for their scholarship but for their superlative humanity as well. They succeeded in having their ‘advice’ heeded because of their loyalty to - and admiration of - the people and were thus beloved and adhered to in return. When an individual, however, is left unattended to or simply misunderstood, a poisonous loneliness then sets in further compounding one’s distress. Eventually one develops a distorted sense of abandonment from G-d Himself who, in his own mind concludes, has ‘punished’ and afflicted him with ‘undeserved’ pain. With the hoped for restoration of judges and counselors of the caliber of earlier times we will indeed be able to eradicate emotional turmoil. Their empathy and authentic perspective will be soothingly therapeutic in bringing those who despair and are in pain, back from the brink of gloom. • The Mishna and Talmud (ברכות ). כטdiscuss the prayer of Havineinu, which is an abridged version of the Shemona Esrei, that incorporates the themes of all thirteen middle blessings into one blessing. This blessing is only relied upon in extenuating cir-

cumstances. The condensed sentiment that corresponds to the blessing for the restoration of judges reads as follows: עַ ל דַ עַ ְּתָך ִיֹשָ פֵטּו,וְ הַ ּתֹועִ ים, Let those who are in error, be judged by your knowledge . Rabbeinu Yonah interprets this sentiment as follows: ‘Those who are in error’ refer to those who claim G-d has abandoned them in this long exile and no longer attends to them, may it be His will that they be judged by Your ‘intimate connection with them’, which is Your compassion and kindness. The essence of this prayer is the restoring of man’s acceptance of His loving presence in all aspects of life. The judges, by their compassionate devotion to those in distress, will succeed in representing His Presence, and thus wipe away all ‘sorrow and groan’. • We lament on Shabbos Chazon the plight of those who so often suffer so greatly in silence. Moshe understood the source of their deeper frustration and trauma that manifested itself in an attitude of visible frustration, couched in their reactive contentiousness, feelings of being overwhelmed in their
burdens and their misguided quarreling. May I humbly suggest that Moshe is not simply bemoaning his inability to carry it לבדי, alone. He is rather expressing, איכה אשא: How can I ‘elevate’ them, from their sense of ''לבדי: ‘isolation’ and loneliness, that displays itself in erroneous, contentiousness, burdens, and quarrels. Moshe goes on to provide the solution by summoning able-bodied judges who will uplift the masses in inspiring them to realize their own personal greatness. • We are all judges in some sense. Don’t we all possess the ability to infuse confidence in those who feel so disabled and disadvantaged? By showing honest concern, validation of their pain and understanding of their plight we too can cause ‘sorrow and groan’ to disappear. If we simply show sincere interest and appreciation for one another we can initiate the process of ridding the world from ‘sorrow and groan’. Isn’t this the antidote to Sinas Chinam, baseless hatred, which we are told was the catalyst for all our subse-
quent suffering? When we seek to discover and cherish the inherent worth of every single person, we begin to heal the enormous burden of emotional pain they may be experiencing. • I once had the privilege of speaking to a group of mental health professionals together with the renowned psychologist, Dr. David Pelcovitz. He related a very poignant story he himself experienced. He had been asked to be the introductory speaker at an event on behalf of the homeless. The head of the organization that assisted the homeless, was the featured speaker. Dressed impeccably and clearly an extraordinarily successful person, he seemed a bit incongruous to the mission he headed. He began his speech by making a startling revelation. This man went to describe how at the impressionable age of thirteen he observed before his very eyes how his father murdered his mother and then committed suicide. Traumatized, this vulnerable child roamed aimlessly for many years from one homeless shelter to another evading the social services authorities who were desperately seeking to find and help him.
It was at one shelter that his life was transformed. The person in charge confronted him and simply uttered four powerful words, “How are you doing?” It was not just his question that penetrated through the thick shell he had developed over those painful years, but more so the sincerity in his eyes that displayed true compassion. He began to let the floodgate of emotion, he so painfully bottled up in those long years of isolation, flow outward, finally sharing his suffering with an accepting and understanding soul. He eventually went on to pursue an education that lead him to Harvard and the string of successes that ensued. • We so desperately need for G-d to return his Presence once again to our midst, to palpably sense Him and His loving and nurturing embrace once again. If we reach out to His children and plainly but with deep sincerity and empathy, ask one another “How are you doing?”, we can be certain He will swiftly respond “I am on My way!”

Heritage Journey with the Boys Part II By Hershel Lieber
This article is a continuation of my trip with the boys of Yeshiva Ohr Shraga Veretzsky
I
t was late Wednesday afternoon on August 11, 2004, when our bus arrived in Rzeszow. This fairly sized Polish city once had a large Jewish population before the war and was called in Yiddish Reisha. When we came with the boys, there was truly little left to see of our past heritage except for the bais olam. Since I had a close relationship with the Bluzhever Rebbe, Rav Yisroel, zt”l, I involved myself with building an ohel over the kevorim of his ancestors, the previous Rebbes. I took the boys there to be mispallel at the ohel and to place kvitlach listing their family members’ names and their bakoshes on the kevorim. After davening Mincha, we boarded our bus for the long ride to Krakow. The boys were exhausted, and this was an opportunity to catch up on some well-deserved napping. Arriving late in the evening and settling into our hotel, we did not get to eat before 11 p.m., after which we enthusiastically welcomed a good night’s sleep.

We had an early start Thursday morning. After davening at the historic Isaak Jekeles Shul, which was

would include coming face-to-face with the notorious Nazi concentration camps Auschwitz-Birkenau. We had a wonderful Polish guide whose narrative was both educational and moving. Our hearts were filled with agony and tears flowed readily as we witnessed the final destination of millions of our people which included so many members of our own families. As we walked along the barracks, we constantly made stops to say Tehillim whenever our emotions determined the need. Suffice it to say, this day will always remain in our memories. The only synagogue building that remained in the city of Oswiecim (Auschwitz) is the over-one-hundredold Chevra Lomdei Mishnayos Shul, which is now a museum and Jewish center. I took the boys there to overcome the traumatic experience of the death camp. We davened Mincha and leined the Torah, which we could not do in the morning. Being in that shul felt so comforting and gave us chizuk and hope for the future. On the way back to Krakow, we diverted to visit an abandoned castle where the boys had a chance to release their energies

by climbing along the stone walls and ascending to the towers. We returned to our hotel where we prepared and ate dinner, and after nightfall, we gathered at the plaza in front of the six-hundred-year-old Stare Synagogue. My nephew, Mechel, brought along his guitar, and we held a kumzitz. The singing was captivating, with Carlebach songs dominating. The harmonious voices rafted throughout the entire square, and soon we had a crowd of onlookers. Our audience was so pleased that many began throwing coins and bills into the open guitar case. We continued this impromptu concert until the

There are also many famous shuls there such as the Old Synagogue, the Remu, the Isaak Jekeles, the Kupa, the Wolf Popper and the High Synagogues. These are all located in the former Jewish section known as Kazimierz. Later in the afternoon, Pesi and I took the boys to the main town square (Rynek Glowny) where they shopped for souvenirs and fed the pigeons.

A well-deserved nap
We were the subject of many photos as we stood out with our crisp white shirts, black pants, and tzitzis neatly hanging from the sides. On the way home, we were treated to a military parade with many participants wearing colorful Polish folk costumes. The multi-faceted experiences of this day came to a halt as we ushered in the Shabbos at the Remu Shul which was followed by a lavish Shabbos tish where we joined other foreign guests singing zemiros and giving over divrei Torah. I also invited some local Polish Jews to participate in this joyous and inspiring encounter with

our yeshiva boys. They were not disappointed. Our Shabbos in Krakow was absolutely beautiful. We davened in the Remu Shul, which in itself was awesome. My good friend, Duvid Singer, who does tours to kivrei tzaddikim in Poland, was there with a group.

We worked out an arrangement so that we all ate the Shabbos seudah together. The camaraderie between our groups was exciting as were the rousing zemiros and meaningful divrei Torah. Again, we were joined by a number of local Polish Jews. The respectful behavior of the boys created a kiddush Hashem that was conveyed to me numerous times over Shabbos, by other Yidden, the hotel staff, and our Polish tour guides. Motzei Shabbos was a mad rush. We made Havdalah at 9:15 p.m. and had to rush to the railway station to be on board by 10:42 p.m. when the overnight train was leaving to Prague. On top of this pressure, I could not locate my wallet and was close to frantic since my credit cards and a considerable amount of cash were inside. I had to put this impediment aside since any more time spent looking for it would cost us to miss the train. We arrived with only minutes to spare, boarded the train, and entered our sleeping compartments. It was only then, as I was rearranging my luggage, that I discovered my wallet tucked into a double zippered
section of my handbag. What a relief! I was ecstatic with joy. Since we had adjoining compartments, we were able to spill out into the corridors and join together in a melave malka. We made cold cut sandwiches and gave out sodas and had Danishes for dessert. We had to be quieter since other passengers were trying to sleep, but we managed to sing a song or two in honor of the occasion. The next three days were a whirlwind of activities. We said Tehillim by the kever of the Maharal, and we davened at the Altneuschul, where his seat is still preserved. We also went to the kever or the Nodeh B ’Yehuda at the other bais olam. We toured five synagogues, each one unique and centering on a different theme. We also visited many secular sites, including the Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, and the Royal Palace where we saw the changing of the guards. One day we went to Terezin (Theresienstadt), the ghetto and concentration camp that the Nazis created to fool the world into thinking that Jews were being treated humanely. There, we watched a documentary about the camp, toured the various buildings, and were able to finish Sefer Tehillim at the makeshift cemetery. After the distressing visit to Terezin, I balanced the seriousness that enveloped us by providing a more lighthearted activity. We took a two-hour boat ride on the Vltava River where we had a most enjoyable kumzitz singing our lungs out while drinking bottles of Pilsner beer. This was followed by barbequed franks back at the hotel. Our trip came to a close Tuesday afternoon when we boarded our plane to return to New York. I was true to my word that the boys would have a most meaningful trip and lots of fun. Pesi and I were also proud of what we provided for our charges and what we accomplished. We were also quite tired!

he most destructive bombs ever used in combat were the two atomic bombs dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima
and Nagasaki on August 6th and 9th, 1945. A few days later, Japan agreed to an unconditional surrender and many historians believe that with-
out the bombs the war would have continued on for months with untold casualties. The creation of the bombs and the Jewish scientists who were instrumental in the Manhattan Project are well documented. However, it was the men of the 20th Air Force and the 509th Composite Group (CG) that actually planned the raids and dropped the bombs. Many Jewish

First Lieutenant Charles Levy was the bombardier for the Great Artsie on the Nagasaki mission. While on the August 9th mission he was the photographer and took the famous photo of the mushroom cloud over the city. He was originally supposed to fly on the Bockscar but the crews were switched because of a complication stemming from flight equipment. As to whether the missions were necessary is still debated in both military and political circles. Controversy surrounds as to whether the Japanese were going to surrender anyway, as they were losing most of their conquests from earlier in the
war. The Russians were attacking Japanese territory and the Ameri-

He served as the officer in charge of radar maintenance with the 509th Composite Group throughout the group’s training period. During the Atom Bomb missions he was the radar counter-measure observer and was tasked with making sure the bombs didn’t explode too early. He was to make sure the Japanese “did not jam the bomb’s fuse frequencies and prematurely detonate the Fat Man” (the name given to the bomb that was sent on the Nagasaki mission). He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions while on this most famous mission. Decades later Beser visited Hiroshima where survivors of the bomb put his mind at rest by expressing their understanding that the fighters were doing their duty. Also on board the Bockscar for the Nagasaki mission on August 9th was radio operator Sergeant Abe Spitzer from the Bronx. He also flew on the Great Artsie for the Hiroshima mission on August 6th. He said of the destructive power of the bomb, “Below us, spread out almost as far as I could see, was a great fire, but it was like no ordinary fire. owadays, whenever the Israeli government approves a new housing project in a community over the “Green Line,” the event makes international headlines. The latest community placed in the spotlight is Gilo, one of Jerusalem’s seven ring neighborhoods that were developed after the Six Day War. With a population of almost 40,000 residents, the neighborhood has recently received approvals to build 1,100 housing units. The name Gilo is mentioned in Joshua 15:51 and in Samuel 2, 15:12. It is believed that modern Gilo is located on the same site, although some scholars argue that biblical Gilo was farther west in the Chevron hills. Although modern Gilo was officially established in 1971, the land has been inhabited by Jews for over 3,000 years. Archaeologists have unearthed a small settlement characteristic of Iron Age Israelite architecture; discovered a fortress from the period of the First Temple; and have found farms and graves from the Second Temple period. Gilo is situated on a hilltop in southwest Jerusalem west of the Malcha Mall, and was master-planned with large open spaces, shopping centers, 35 synagogues, many schools and kindergartens,
numerous small playgrounds scattered throughout the community, and two large parks: Park Gilo and Park Zeidenberg. Over the past fifteen years, Gilo’s main roads have expanded, offering access to the rest of Jerusalem. Gilo has a mix of many demo-
Jews, including Dati Leumi (national religious) and a large and growing Chareidi (Yeshivish) constituency. Gilo is divided into six main areas: Gilo Aleph is where the absorption center is located, and the population tends to be on a lower socioeconomic level. Many Cha-

reidi families have moved into this community due to the lower priced housing and the strong services that the neighborhood provides. Bet has a large Dati Leumi community, Gimmel is mostly native Israelis, Hei has a mixed population, and Dalet and Givat Canada also have a mixed pop-

Due to its strong population, coupled with nicer housing stock and sweeping views of Jerusalem, housing prices in Dalet and Givat Canada are higher than in the other Gilo neighborhoods. With Gilo’s relatively inexpensive housing, fine municipal and educational services, and access to the center of Jerusalem, it’s no wonder that housing is in strong demand and that the neighborhood is in expansion mode. “My Israel Home” is a real estate agency focused on helping people from abroad buy and sell homes in Israel. What residents of Tehran heard and saw that fateful evening was the first in a series of mysterious incidents, all involving damage to sensitive locations in Iran, from military bases to industrial zones to historical sites. The location of the June 25th explosion was in fact a large Iranian military base. In the early 2000’s, allegations were leveled on the Ayatollahs by international media that Ira-
If this is in fact the case, it shows that the hardline approach to Iran taken by the Trump administration and Israel albeit each in its own way has escalated to a series of short of war targeted strikes, aimed at taking out important Iranian assets. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) sought access to Parchin to investigate the site, Iranian officials flatly denied the nuclear watchdogs’ request. One bizarre incident at a shady military site linked to Iran’s nuclear program could plausibly be dismissed
the event drew suspicion as officials could not agree as to what triggered the blast. The Tehran prosecutor’s office told media sources the cause of the accident was the explosion of three oxygen capsules inside the clinic. But a senior police official said the investigation pointed to a “gas leak”
and “a faulty electrical wire” as the source of the incident. Over the next week and a half, Iran experienced one strange destructive episode after another. A large fire consumed swaths of public gardens in the city of Shiraz on July 3rd. The following morning a power plant in the city of Ahwaz, the capital of Khuzestan, caught fire when a transformer exploded. Later that same day, a chlorine gas leak and fire was reported at the Karun petrochemical center in the southwestern city of Mahshahr. Some seventy workers were reported sickened by the gas and required hospitalization. Three days later on July 7 th, a factory blew up in southern Tehran. According to reports, faulty oxygen canisters were responsible for the blast. Local governor Amin Babaei stated the incident was the result of employee negligence, accusing factory workers of being “careless.”
Connecting the Dots By the time Iran experienced its fourth explosion in the span of a week, observers began to question the regime’s dismissive attitude. The conversation on the string of “accidents” went where all substantive conversation on Iran policy is forced to take place - social media. Today, there are still a few platforms on which Iranians can be frank about the developments in their country. Accusations on the source of fires and explosions have been abound on chat forums and communication apps. Many posters have leveled accusations on the regime itself, some

as the accident Iranian officials claim it was. Seven incidents is a different story. Four days after the blast in Parchin, another explosion took place, this time within the residential area of Tehran itself. On June 30th, an explosion at a medical clinic in the north of the capital was heard at around 9:00pm. According to reports, nineteen people were killed in the ensuing fire and another fourteen injured. Almost immediately,

n 25 June, what was otherwise a normal night in the Iranian capital of Tehran, was suddenly and without warning rudely interrupted. At about midnight local time, a massive explosion was heard throughout the city. To the east, Terhanians saw the sky light up a bright orange as the conflagration caused by the blast began to consume surrounding structures. The following morning, regime-owned media published a report that the explosion was the result of a malfunctioned gas tank in the Parchin state administrative zone located about 40 kilometers east of Tehran. No injuries occurred, but the damage was reportedly quite extensive. Defense Ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Davoud Abdi told reporters that firefighters eventually managed to bring the blaze under control and investigations were under way to determine the cause.
nian technicians at Parchin were testing highly explosive components for a nuclear warhead. At the time, Iran unequivocally denied any nuclear-related activity at the base. “Parchin is a military site where conventional military activities take place,” said then Foriegn Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast. “Comments about cleaning up military nuclear tests are not accurate or wise. This is invalid propaganda.” However, when inspectors from the

going so far as to accuse Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) of organized arson against some of the sites. But while some of the locations that have been damaged could potentially be on the Ayatollah’s hit list - such as several religious minority holy sites - most of them could not. Which brings us to one of the more insightful revelations circulated by Iranian web influencers. As many users have pointed out, there are clear signs Iranian authorities have been trying to hide key details of several of the explosions. For instance, almost a week after the June 25th blast east of Tehran, the story broke that on the same night the secret missile site in Khojir also experienced an explosion. It is still unclear if the event at Khojir was in addition to the one reported at Parchin or if state media completely made up the Parchin report to distract from the real location. Be that as it may, there is no question as to why Iran would want to repress news about a possible sabotage incident at the Khojir Missile Production Complex (KMPC). KMPC is almost certainly the most important site for the Ayatollah’s ballistic missile program. The site has largely escaped public scrutiny, but it has always been hiding in plain sight, approximately 40 kilometers from the country’s capital. Satellite imagery confirms that KMPC did in fact sustain severe damage sometime around the 26th of June. Iranian authorities may be able to obfuscate the connection Parchin has to any more-than-conventional military activity. On the other hand, KMPC, is without a doubt an important center of Iran’s cutting-edge military research and development and is closely linked to the nation’s Space Industries Organization. If Iran were to ever produce a viable atomic weapon, it would be the people at Khojir that would provide a missile capable of delivering the warhead. Indeed, the pattern pointing to Iran’s nuclear program becomes all the more apparent when considering the most important in the series of peculiar blasts. The small city of Natanz is home to Iran’s advanced centrifuge devel-

opment and assembly plant. The plant is generally recognized as Iran’s central facility for uranium enrichment with slightly under 20,000 gas centrifuges reportedly operating on site. Natanz was a key point of the negotiations surrounding Iran’s nuclear
accident. The damage inflicted on the facility was too severe to have been the result of mistake or mechanical failure. All signs point to the placement of a high impact explosive device, likely near a key gas line, as the source of the explosion. Satellite im-

Daily inspection of the site by the IAEA was part of the nuclear enrichment reduction agreement reached in 2013. The Natanz plant was the target of the infamous Stuxnet attack, a cyber breach orchestrated jointly between American and Israeli intelligence agencies between 2007 and 2010. Needless to say, the Natanz facility is a central location of Iran’s nuclear activity, and everybody knows it. On July 2nd, Natanz became the third site in Iran to be rocked by an explosion in the span of a few days. The Iranians barely attempted to cover up Natanz in the guise of an
ages from above Natanz, recently retrieved, have forced western analysts to update their damage assessment for the site. According to statements from unnamed intelligence sources gathered by the New York Times, it is estimated the Iranians would need up to two years to return their nuclear program to the place it was before the explosion.
What does this all mean? Many regional observers were concerned that the combination of COVID and annexation would distract Israel from the Iranian threat. While there is no hard evidence yet
that Jerusalem is behind these incidents, developments in Iran over the past several weeks strongly indicate at least some tertiary involvement by both Israel and the United States. If this is in fact the case, it shows that the hardline approach to Iran taken by the Trump administration and Israel - albeit each in its own way - has escalated to a series of short-of-war targeted strikes, aimed at taking out important Iranian assets. The first sign of this policy being put into motion came with the killing of IRGC general Qasem Soleimani earlier this year. That attack however, at least took place outside of the Islamic Republic. These recent ones - if they are all indeed attacks - took place deep inside Iran’s territory. A second element to consider is what the attacks say about Iran’s internal security. Simply put, it is highly unlikely, nearly impossible, for any nation to have carried out these acts of sabotage without inside help. This is not the first sign of western collaborators inside Iran. Two years ago, a Mossad raid of a warehouse in Tehran resulted in the theft and extraction of tens of thousands of nuclear weapons-planning documents. This operation clearly had the assistance of insiders. The recent string of incidents affecting highly sensitive Iranian sites shows there is an extensive network of operatives throughout the country prepared and capable of acting against the regime. Finally, recent events in Iran show the breakdown of the Ayatollah’s intelligence apparatus. As one strange explosion was reported after the other, the prevailing question was, understandably, “whodunit?” But an equally, if not more obvious question was how were these attacks ever carried out successfully? While the Iranians may not be quite on par with the West when it comes to spy catching, they are certainly not fools when it comes to counterintelligence. In the early 2000’s, Iran successfully identified and broke up a CIA network in the country. Iran regularly claims to uncover spies deployed by Israel and other regional countries. In this recent string of attacks, not only did

enemies to push forward with even bolder clandestine operations. This could trigger a serious shift in the modus operandi of the regime’s domestic adversaries, namely the slew of armed Iranian opposition groups that reject the Islamic Revolution. Seeing that the Ayatollahs are incapable of stopping attacks, organizations ranging from the Iranian Peoples’ Mojahedin to the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan may begin ramping up their activities targeting
the regime. This would in turn force authorities in Tehran to shift focus inward and redeploy assets to reestablish domestic security. There is little doubt that even now, the IRGC is investigating links between the recent sabotage and opposition militias. Of course, at some point Iran will not need ‘evidence’ of Western meddling. If push comes to shove, Iran will lash out at any target it can - American or Israeli - in retaliation for sabotage bombings. While such a

scenario may be an escalation to Tehran’s detriment, not even Iran’s most bitter adversaries are seeking a full scale conflict with the Islamic Republic. the IRGC fail to stop the saboteurs, but the regime’s silence over the past week and a half indicates they barely have so much as a lead. The only conclusion is that Iran’s security agencies are not doing well. The most obvious root cause is lack of funding and the result of years of U.S. sanctions coupled with sinking oil prices. Regardless of what underpins the trend, clearly the IRGC is not functioning as well as it needs to be. Which means there is now an opening for Iran’s

Seriously? On a road trip, I remember passing a sign that said ‘Rest Stop 1 Mile’. I thought to myself, “Wow, that’s really big.” Everyone criticizes Apple Maps, but I enjoyed using it for my road trip from New York to Florida. There's a lot to do in Chicago. I recently drove through the town of Covert, New York on a road trip. I didn't notice.
What's worse than raining cats and dogs? Hailing Taxi. What goes through towns, up hills, and down hills but never moves? The road!

Dating Dialogue
What Would You Do If… Moderated by Jennifer Mann, LCSW of The Navidaters
B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M
Dear Navidaters,
Dear Navidaters,
My question may be different than those you usually receive, but I would really appreciate your advice. I see many girls writing about their lack of suggestions, and I wanted to bring up the opposite side. As a mainstream guy from a good family who went to typical schools and yeshivas, I am struggling with the very real problem of too many suggestions. My inbox is flooded with resumes; I have shadchanim and mothers and random people in the street hounding me constantly; and I am more than overwhelmed. At this point, it is so hard to decide who to go out with and how to prioritize in an endless list of seemingly similar girls. On paper, they all sound great. The shadchanim always tell me this girl is “exactly what you’re looking for.” I am grateful to have a lot of suggestions for dates but it is still hard for me. I can either attempt to sort through huge piles of resumes that all seem the same and that every reference describes as “normal, beautiful, smart, fun, and growing” and still be confused or say yes to every person and spend lots of money and time and effort going on dates every night. Either way, I am not doing these girls or myself a favor as I am burned out and exhausted by even the thought of another date. What advice can you offer me? Thanks, Moshe Disclaimer: This column is not intended to diagnose or otherwise conclude resolutions to any questions.
Our intention is not to offer any definitive

Due to the nature of the column receiving only a short snapshot of an issue, without the benefit of an actual discussion, the panel’s role is to offer a range of possibilities. We hope to open up meaningful dialogue and individual exploration.

The Panel The Rebbetzin
The Shadchan
Rebbetzin Faigie Horowitz, M.S. ou seem to be detailing two issues. One is your burnout from the dating scene. The other is the lack of clarity about what exactly you are seeking in a life partner, and the deluge of suggestions. I would suggest taking a timeout for both purposes. Take some time to relax from the barrage of dates and girls to really introspect. Don’t just think about the qualities you are seeking in a potential spouse; consider what you have to offer a young woman in terms of inner qualities and strengths. Give yourself the peace of mind and time to consider your style of dealing with stress and challenge. What qualities would a good potential partner need to have to help you and support you in your response to difficulty? How do you discern whether a young woman has those qualities that will help you develop in a healthy manner? What are your weak points and in what areas would you like to grow? What have you learned about yourself during your dating experiences? Do you have emotional baggage from your life thus far? Taking a good look in the mirror is smart as well as humbling. Since you are mature enough to recognize your dating fatigue, and the fact that your resume is very attractive (and that it’s not because you are necessarily so great that you are getting all these suggestions), take responsibility for your dating opportunities. Don’t be passive. Take the time to tell shadchanim who you are, what you are all about, and what qualities you are looking for. You may also want to consider suggestions only from people who know you personally for a while. Taking personal stock of yourself and cutting down on the number of people from whom you take suggestions will make dating a more productive and manageable process.
Michelle Mond n shidduchim, women are lost in a desert while men are lost in a forest. Women seem to be lost in a world devoid of good-quality men while men can’t show up at the grocery store without ten more shidduch suggestions being thrown at them from all aisles. This is one of the many problems with the shidduch system. Those who have established this system have (undeliberately) created a world where it is normal for single men and their parents to hoard boxes of resumes of wonderful women to choose from. This inherently creates an aggrandized sense of entitlement in young men who are dating, oftentimes who don’t have much to show for themselves because they don’t need to. This situation makes it more difficult for the men to be able to commit. Why commit to one when the next could potentially be better? The men often harbor an overinflated ego with the knowledge that there will always be someone who surpasses the current one. The next one might be nicer, smarter, prettier, frummer etc... The list goes on... It is a problem that must change, which is why I want to begin with this here, because as a community we must shed light on this crucial issue. As a community we must educate the young singles out there to completely revamp their thought process if truly serious about marriage, rather than just playing the field. My advice for you is to recognize this: The next person you choose to go out with can have the potential to be your bashert. There is a famous story about an older bochur who went to a famous Rav/ Mekubal. The bochur asked why he wasn’t zoche to be married yet, like most of his peers. The Rav responded, “You did meet your bashert, but you passed her up because you thought the next one would be better.” This rings true for many in today’s generation. Rather than the recognition that he should be looking for a good match by actively choosing this wom-

an as his bashert based on her stellar qualities; these men, with endless suggestions, wait for one of these resumes to be a Ms. Perfect planted at the door along with a bas-kol at no additional charge. Newsflash: That just does not happen. If it does happen, I am worried for you because it is likely infatuation. Infatuation quickly fades if the relationship is not based on the very sturdy ground of commonality, respect, compatibility, care and trust. Be very careful not to fall for the false narrative that if you choose to marry an amazing woman whom you respect and care for, with whom you are clearly compatible, you might be doomed if you do not know 100%. You can actively choose your bashert and make her your 100% - you are in the driver’s seat of your happiness here. You can either dwell on the not-soperfect while being blind to your own flaws, leading you from date to date; from girl to girl, with no end in sight. Or, you can focus on the one in front of you, the one you decide to date. If you, together with a like-minded woman who also respects and cherishes you, get to a good place together, do not dwell on what-if’s while staring at your endless abyss of other resumes. You can feel confident moving forward to take the leap of faith together. Stop looking for signs from above to lead you to certainty; the signs are here on earth. If you have found a connection with someone good for you, go for it, and leave the connection of your souls to G-d - whom, if you chose this woman for the right reasons, will undoubtedly take it from there.
The Single Rena Friedman oshe, Wow! That sounds like a lot. As a girl within the system, I have never experienced anything like that. I do remember the rare occasion where 2 or 3 guys would say yes to me at once and it felt very overwhelming, so I cannot imagine how

you are feeling with your level of bombardment. Also, while your question may not be typical, it is an extremely important one that must be asked and answered for both men and women. Thank you for being brave enough to do it and perhaps dodge some rotten tomatoes along the way. The burnout you discuss is extremely real. Shkoyach for recognizing that you are at that point and trying to find a way to change it up. I experienced this myself as I would say yes to guys who were not shayach for me. The best way to deal with burnout is to pause. Think. Acknowledge what is burning you out and put a system in place to prevent that from happening in the future. For you, it is the overwhelming amount of suggestions from everyone and anyone. You need a serious vetting system in place. Take some time to think about and answer the following questions: What do you need in a wife? What type of girls have and have not worked for you in the past? What is a blatant no for you? Once you have this information gathered, use it to help guide you when doing research. Use her resume and photo as a preliminary screening. For example, if it drives you nuts when girls do not use proper grammar or spelling in their resumes, then toss all the ones with those errors in the garbage. Have specific questions that you can

that of a girl who has too few prospects. Statistically, “in the Orthodox dating pool, there are 12 percent more available women than men (Date-Onomics, by Jon Birger).” A friend remarked that orthodox young men need a secretary and gatekeeper, while orthodox young women need a press agent and public relations firm. Here are my suggestions: You might wish to attend Rabbinically-supervised social events, where young men and women meet on their own, rather than through recommendations. However, I understand that these events are not accepted in many religious circles. As an alternative, I suggest that you pick one person, and only one person, that you trust completely. It should be someone who “gets you,” understands your likes and dislikes, and recognizes your particular goals and aspirations. This person could be your mother or a trustworthy shadchan.

ask references to see if the traits you need or need to avoid exist. For example, if you cannot go out with a girl who is socially off then flat out ask the reference, “Is she socially off?” If you do not want this burden on your shoulders, find a trusted friend, parent, or mentor who truly understands what you need and have them go through the resumes for you. I cannot stress the importance of being 100% confident that this person is on your team and gets you and what you need. The wrong person in this position can be very harmful. A general warning: although we think we feel better with more choices, the more we have, the less likely we will actually choose or feel satisfied. Keep this in mind. Being married to Ms. Good Enough is better than not being married at all. The amazing right girl is out there for you. Just keep davening. ear Moshe, Thank you for writing in! I would recommend taking a break from dating to regroup. This break may be a few days, a month or more. If one is being offered one hundred flavors of delicious ice cream, a few outcomes may occur: 1. The person immediately knows he’s going for his favorite flavor, cookie dough. He will choose the cookie dough every time because he loves cookie dough and is truly content with the flavor. 2. He will want to taste a few flavors before he ultimately chooses his ice cream cone. 3. He will stand at the counter for too long, ruminating, unable to choose, and missing the whole ice cream experience. Take the sage advice the panelists have offered and deeply introspect. Think about what you want. Everyone is “wonderful” on paper. What are you looking for? What is important to you? Since you are getting suggestion from every Tom, Dick and Harry, you have the luxury of not accepting resumes from peripheral people in your life who do not know you well. You need a better filtering system. I wonder if you have in any way

invited the overwhelming a m o u nt of resumes into you r l i fe , because let’s face it... it feels good to be wanted and in such high demand. How would you feel limiting the resumes coming in? What would come up for you internally? Notice whatever that feeling is. For some it might be worry that the right one will get away (nerves, anxiety!) For some it might be the loss of the pleasure and almost addictive like euphoria that the onslaught of resumes bring. For some, it might be sheer relief. This is a huge problem that exists within shidduchim, as other panelists so wisely and eloquently explained. I can’t even begin to explain the amount of incredible (and I mean that!) single women I have had the joy of working with over the years. Women who believe there is something wrong with them because they aren’t married and have a hard time getting dates. One of the main focuses of the work is not giving into the belief that there must be something wrong with them. There is something wrong with the shidduch system. It is a system that puts men and their families up on a pedestal while discarding women and theirs. It makes no sense to me other than it being a reflection of some antiquated patriarchal ideas that don’t serve anyone well. How does this change? If a young man had fifty beautiful girls ready to date him, OF COURSE he is going to have a hard time choosing. We cannot deny human nature. And the women will try to be more and more

impressive (working harder and harder and feeling less than and less than and less than.) Change has to take place on a systemic level. A movement perhaps. People are afraid of change. They are afraid to upset the powers that be. But this doesn’t work for so many people. Why do we want to continue giving the young men so much power? What are we really afraid of as a community? What would things look like if women were being bombarded with resumes? Hmmmmmm. Or better yet, what would it look like if things were simply more balanced? What are we waiting for? Especially the gezeirah of the closing of our battei medrash and yeshivos in a way that makes the heart tremble.” The Rosh Yeshiva acknowledges that with chasdei Hashem, things have recently gotten better, “But the yeshuah is not yet a complete one, and we need much chizuk… “Now, as bein hazemanim - a time that always needs chizuk and especially this year - approaches,” the Rosh

with the advent of the upcoming bein hazemanim that starts on Rosh Chodesh Av. The program would include tests and generous stipends thereby encouraging a framework for spiritual growth during this difficult time-period. In addition, Rav Diskin went to the senior Rosh Yeshiva of our time in Eretz Yisrael, HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of the Ponovezh Yeshiva to ask for his advice and bracha. Not only did Rav Gershon enthusiastically endorse the idea, but he also signed a letter encouraging bachurim the world over to join. Numerous other gedolei Eretz Yisrael who were approached were similarly deeply pleased, and encouraged Dirshu to undertake the program and called on all bachurei yeshivos to join the program. In addition to Rav Gershon, those who signed the special kol korei included the Sar HaTorah, HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, shlita, Chacham Shalom Cohen, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshivat Porat Yosef, the Vizhnnitzer Rebbe, shlita, the Sanzer Rebbe, shlita, and HaGaon HaRav
Yeshiva added, “it is incumbent on all bnei Torah to strengthen themselves with all of their might, especially in light of the rifyon that we have just sustained. “How important, therefore,” Rav Olshin writes, “is the amazing work of the Dirshu organization that has designed a specific, detailed learning program starting on Rosh Chodesh Av wherein bachurim will be able to strengthen themselves in learning Torah and mussar with yegiah, according to a specific schedule…” “The Program is a Great Yeshuah for Our Bachurei Yeshivos” Indeed, Rav Diskin related, “I see this carefully planned and constructed program by Dirshu as a great yeshuah for our bachurei yeshivos. Every bachur wants to shteig, no bachur wants to have a yeridah, especially now during this difficult period for klal Yisroel but the lack of a framework and the fact that so many of our bachurim are not in a structured environment means that a program such as this can be both a tremendous way to grow in Torah while serving as a profound yeshuah for bachurim.” Dirshu’s hanhala member, Rabbi Avidgor Bernstein, adds, “I am certain the very geshmake limud and the fact that so many bachurim all over the world, whether it is Eretz Yisrael, America, France or England, are joining and learning the same thing, will bring a great yeshuah and make for a wonderful achdus through Torah. That itself is a wonderful thing. Indeed, we are living in unprecedented times and it is only in the zechus haTorah that the world will be saved. That zechus rests in the hands of our wonderful bachurei yeshivos! To join or for more information please contact Dirshu at 888-5-Dirshu.

We are living in unprecedented times! Since Purim, many of our holy yeshivos have not been functioning regularly. Although boruch Hashem, in some places throughout America there has been great improvement, there are still so many bachurim who are not in their regular misgeres, framework of a yeshiva. In Eretz Yisrael and Europe things are even less stable. So many camps are closed or running on a limited basis. Thus, our most precious treasures, our bachurei yeshivos, upon whose learning the world stands, especially those who do not have a framework of a regular yeshiva or camp, are having a much more difficult time structuring their day in ways that are optimum for their ruchniyus. Rebbeim and Roshei Yeshivos have expressed their feeling that for many bachurim the present matzav is a crisis situation. As bein hazemanim was approaching, several gedolei Roshei Yeshiva expressed their concern for the welfare of the continued shteiging of the wonderful bnei yeshivos. They felt the need to create some kind of framework to offer bachurim the structure so necessary for continued growth in learning and protection from the various nisyonos that characterize our times. Prominent among these Roshei Yeshiva was HaGaon HaRav Boruch Dov Diskin, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva Orchos Torah, the yeshiva established by HaGaon HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, zt”l. The Importance of Structured Learning For Bochurim in the Age of Corona Rav Boruch Dov approached the hanhala of Dirshu in Eretz Yisrael and begged them to create a special learning program that would start

he artists of the Holocaust era had a story to tell. Though much has been lost, the remaining art is a testimony to the lives they lived and the horrors they encountered. Liz Elsby is determined to share their stories and preserve their legacies. Elsby is an artist, educator and tour guide at Yad Vashem the World Holocaust Remembrance Center Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, Israel. Elsby has been working at the International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem (ISHS), since 2006. ISHS provides Holocaust education to diverse audiences from Israel and across the world, including training for educators to teach the Holocaust. It is the only school of its kind, utilizing an interdisciplinary approach of educating through art, music, literature, theology and drama. “I was always really fascinated by the Holocaust,” shares Elsby. “My dad’s whole family came from Grodno, Poland and from Riga. Almost all of them were murdered either in Treblinka or Auschwitz…so that was always kind of there in the background. It’s not something my dad felt comfortable talking about, but I was always fascinated by the subject.” Born in New York, Elsby and her family moved to Texas when she was 12. Illustrating and painting since she was a little girl, she was a National Scholar in the Arts and attended an art high school in Houston. She received a full scholarship and attend-
ed university for a year and a half in Philadelphia. Discontented in with Jewish life in Philadelphia and Houston in early 1980’s, Elsby decided to join a Kibbutz Ulpan in Israel for six months. She made Aliyah to Israel in April 1984. “That ‘six months’ turned into 36 years -- I’ve been here ever since. I was a little Jewish kid from Long Island when we moved to Houston and I was the only Jewish kid in the class. I felt very disconnected. My family was very Zionistic and I always kind of dreamed of going to Israel.”
In 2006 Elsby’s career took a new path when a friend told her about an opening at Yad Vashem as a content writer in the web department. Elsby was grateful to be accepted with no background in history. Once Yad Vashem learned of her graphic design background, she was recruited for that role as well. By 2007 Elsby took the course to become a museum tour guide. “I absolutely fell in love with teaching and educating and teaching people about the Holocaust.” At Yad Vashem, Elsby’s love of art gave birth to a unique form of holo-

Elsby served as a graphic artist in the Israel Defense Forces from 1985 to 1987. She went on to The Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, graduating in 1991 with a BFA degree in illustration and graphic design. She worked as freelance illustrator and artist for many years, and served as a courtroom artist at the 1996 trial of Yigal Amir, who assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
caust education. Art is not only as a portal to the past but as a memorial for those who would have otherwise been completely erased…? “As fascinated as I am with the Holocaust, I began to really really hone in on what it meant to create art during this terrible time. That as an artist you could still create art under such terrible circumstances and that the art wouldn’t only be what people
think it would be – kitschy images of barbed wire and yellow stars – that people could go beyond that a find a place inside themselves. I became fascinated by Holocaust art and got into it more and more. I was very grateful that I had a platform at Yad Vashem.” “Holocaust” art refers to the art created during the period of 19331948, from the year the Nazis came to power until three years after the war ended in 1945. Yad Vashem houses the world’s largest and most comprehensive Holocaust-era related collections, with a few smaller collections housed at other museums. Between ten and eleven thousand pieces of art survived, and Elsby explains that it is a mere fraction of what was created over those years, with most being lost or destroyed. Some artwork was entrusted to friends or hidden, but most was never retrieved, and many pieces were confiscated and destroyed by the Nazis as Jewish art. Much of the surviving Holocaust art comes from Theresienstadt. Though her family originated from Poland, Elsby became very focused on Czech Jewry and Theresienstadt. Before her parents passed away last summer, Elsby would meet them yearly in Prague to visit the city and study Jewish life and the art of Terezin. Theresienstadt/Terezin was a camp 30 miles north of Prague in the Czech Republic. Considered the “better“ ghetto, Theresienstadt was a hybrid concentration camp, transit camp and ghetto established by the Nazis during World War II in the fortress town Terezín, located in a

Elsby lives with her family in Kiryat Yovel, Jerusalem, not far from Yad Vashem. Elsby’s passion for the arts runs in the family. “My dad was very artistic even though he never really pursued it. Dad was in love with opera and classical music. Both of my daughters are artists.” Her days are typically immersed

In introducing the lesson on “Art in The Shoah”, Elsby explains Holocaust artists were regular artists caught in the wheels of history, and likens the art of the Holocaust period to “the gravestone for those who don’t have a grave.” One such artist was Felix Nussbaum. Nussbaum was an up and coming German Jewish artist who studied in Rome until the Nazis came to power. Nussbaum went into hiding. “The Refugee” is Nussbaum’s 1939 painting depicting imagery of a wandering Jew in despair. Another evocative work several years later is Nussbaum’s “Self Portrait with Jewish Identity Card” (1943). This work

in Holocaust education, filled with guiding in museum, giving seminars usually about art and Theresienstadt. Elsby leads tours to Poland and Auschwitz and attempts to show visitors Jewish life before the war - she has gone 23 times to date. Several times a year she is sent by Yad Vashem to visit cities across the US to teach about antisemitism and Holocaust education. She also works with “Echoes and Reflections”, an educational organization which would send her to the States to teach teachers, both Jewish and non-Jewish, about the Holocaust and how to teach it accurately and correctly. Elsby had recently taken on some of the social media responsibilities for the International School as well. These busy days are much
is a dark and haunting self-portrait surrounded by smoke and shadows. Far off in the distance Nussbaum places a small blooming tree, possibly representing a glimmer of hope that he still may have been holding on to. Nussbaum was found and sent to Auschwitz and murdered in 1944. Another notable artist was Ilka Gedo (May 26, 1921 – June 19, 1985). Gedo was a talented Hungarian painter and graphic artist. One early work was a self-portrait, faded and with darkness over her eyes, though she was only in her early twenties at the time. Elsby shares the story that Gedo’s name was called for deportation from a group of Jews staying together in a home in the Budapest ghetto, when an older man steps up and takes her place. This selfless unknown rabbi was a remarkable example of the Jews who saved other Jews. Gedo’s later work was a portrait with no head and with twisted hands; perhaps an expression of survivor’s guilt. Gedo doesn’t paint again for 20 years. When she resumes in the 1960’s, her art is all in the abstract style. Elsby explains how art served as a testimony, and was especially valuable at times when several artists portrayed the same scene. Some of the art from Terezin bears witness to the horrors of the life of the ghetto, for example five artists who depicted the arrival of 1091 kids from Bialystok that were sent to Auschwitz a month later. Another illustrated incident was that of a public hanging in 1942. Leo Haas was one artist who depicted the punishment of young men arrested for writing letters home to their parents in his drawing “The Hanging of a Ghetto Inmate”. In places like Terezin, the artists

German-occupied region of Czechoslovakia. It was named after Empress Maria Theresa who expelled the Jews from Prague during her rule in the 18th century. Terezin’s prisoners included scholars, philosophers, scientists, artists and musicians, some of whom had achieved international renown, and many of these contributed to the camp’s cultural life. Many Nazi propaganda films were made at Terezin. Jewish artists were forced to create artwork for the Nazis, and many Jewish artists fought back by creating their own artwork. Some of the art served to document reality, while some served as a means to find temporary refuge. “For me, a piece of artwork that someone left behind who was murdered is almost like their tombstone,” says Elsby. “There’s nothing left of those people. Most of them didn’t leave anything written about themselves and some we don’t even know their name, but they left this beautiful piece of art or some kind of expression behind and that’s a monument to the fact that they lived. The more I talk about them, the more I give them symbolic life again. That’s why I do it.” By 2013 Elsby decided to focus on the educational aspects of art and keep her own art more recreational and personal. Personally Elsby loves illustration, children’s illustration in particular, and is currently working on illustrating a book about a little girl in pre-war Krakow. She aims to portray Jewish life and show that the Jews had their own lives and identities just like any of us, not only through the lens of history and the Holocaust.

that were forced to work for the Nazis would steal supplies and make secret art at the risk of their lives. Elsby tells of a July 1944 incident. “Four of the artists were caught for creating what the Nazis called “horror propaganda”, in other words, artwork showing the horrors of the ghetto. The group, including an art dealer and an architect, were arrested and sent to prison in a concentration camp called “The Little Fortress”. Only one of the artists survived the war.” The horrific conditions in concentration camps like Auschwitz-Birkenau made it virtually impossible to create art in the other camps. There were some artists, however, who had been selected by their talent to work for the Nazis. Halina Olomucki was taken and forced to work, stenciling wallpaper by hand and making signs. Olomucki would steal paper and pencil and draw the women in her barracks at night. Knowing most
of them wouldn’t survive, the women would beg her to draw them so that there would be some memory of them left behind. Olomucki was one of the very few Jewish artists who were able to create art in the extermination camps. Much of the Holocaust art that was recovered was hidden in the ghettos. The Warsaw Ghetto in particular had a treasure trove hidden under the ghetto as depicted in Who Will Write Our History?, a 2018 film
of documentation was hidden by this group in their quest to leave evidence of their lives and experiences – artwork, interviews, essays and letters – all hidden under the city of Warsaw. Though almost all of the participants were murdered, many of the documents and art survived. “This group of people knew that something terrible was going to happen in the ghetto. They wanted their voice to be the voice that would tell the story of the Jews, and not the

voice of the Nazis. The Nazis showed Jews as rats in the sewers; they wanted the actual voice of the people so they went on this initiative to collect documentation. It’s an amazing story.” Elsby remarks how the art had to come out of the artist even under unsafe and very limiting circumstances. “It’s an amazing testament to the human spirit that you can’t squash that expression – they still created. What I also think is amazing is that one of the things the Nazis said is that Jews bring no beauty into the world, they only bring ugliness and they don’t create -- and every single piece of artwork is like a slap in the face of that Nazi ideology. Every piece of artwork brings some kind of beauty, brings something new into the world – that’s if they’re making art or making music or writing poetry or teaching kids-that’s all ways of bringing something positive into the world against everything the Nazis said. It’s a real act of resistance.” Most communities didn’t have the ability to have an uprising like in Warsaw and there were about 100 uprisings in Nazi occupied Poland and most were doomed for failure from the start. Elsby views the art as a means of fighting back – both as a form of survival and rebellion. Elsby is concerned for the education of the younger generations who won’t be growing up with Holocaust survivors. “You have to tell the story through the first person narrative; it has to be the human story and art is such a human expression. Writers write, diarists write diaries and art-
ists tell their stories through their artwork -- that’s their witness and that’s how they become an individual. So artwork really shows us that these were individual human beings and I think that’s the most important way to remember the Holocaust, not only through numbers and statistics …who were they and what were the individual stories? It makes it much more relevant for younger people.” Elsby feels a loss of not being able to educate now, with Yad Vashem closed to visitors and most of her regular educational programing on hiatus. Two of her trips, a March of the Living tour and United Synagogue Youth trip kids to Prague, Berlin and Poland, were unfortunately cancelled for 2020. “I think it’s really important to talk about because I think now, with all these things happening, this whole story is kind of getting lost -and we’re not going to have survivors soon. Everyone is so wrapped up with everything else happening in the world that it’s really the time to stand up now and remember these people and make sure their stories are told. We owe it to them; they won’t be here to tell their own stories soon.” “The ignorance is so astonishing with all of the terrible things coming out now – we have to be vigilant,” cautions Elsby. “We have to teach young people they’re our hope for the future, and I think to teach them to be able to relate to this is through the stories of individuals.” One can look to the Diary of Anne Frank to see how much impact came through telling of the human story, and how her story helped masses of people understand history on a more personal level. In a modern age where images hold so much value, art can certainly play a tremendous role in bringing the history and the horrors to light. “Every time they take the Holocaust and make it into a story of a person or a community or a family then people can understand it and relate to it and that’s what art does also. Art makes it much more of human story. “ Art and additional resources can be found at www.yadvashem.org/ education

Introversion, Shyness, and Social Anxiety Disorder By Rabbi Azriel Hauptman
Shyness and introversion are two characteristics that are often used to describe people who are quiet or reserved. These two terms have become almost synonymous in our vernacular. However, if you unpack these labels you will discover that shyness and introversion are describing two totally different experiences even though
they bear some outward resemblance. Introversion means turning inward. Introverts are people who genuinely enjoy their internal world and have no need to bring attention to themselves. They are not uncomfortable around other people; they just happen to enjoy being with themselves or with small groups. Shyness, however, re-

fers to apprehension and uneasiness one feels when around other people. Introversion vs. extroversion is a difference in preference such as the preference of vanilla ice cream over chocolate. Excessive shyness is usually a characteristic that people wished they would not possess as it holds them back from desired social interactions. It is therefore common to have people who have one trait and not the other. One can be a shy extrovert or a confident introvert. Here are a couple of examples to illustrate this point. Yaakov is a very confident person who has no problem approaching very distinguished people and engaging them in conversation. He has developed relationships with many Roshei Yeshiva and Rebbeim because he is never too shy to ask them questions or discuss important matters with them. Yaakov is however an introvert and keeps to himself when he does not feel a need to be social. Yaakov is a confident introvert. Shimon on the other hand loves being the “life of the party”, but does not enjoy introducing himself to people he does not know, he tries to avoid asking directions, and blushes when he is compelled to engage in any form of public speaking. His shyness holds him back from engaging in desired social interactions. Shimon is a shy extrovert. Shyness exists on a spectrum. There are some people who are mildly shy or bashful, which can actually be a very endearing quality. However, when shyness reaches a point where it interferes with one’s life then it can
possibly receive a diagnosis of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). SAD is a persistent, intense, and excessive fear of being judged, negatively evaluated, or rejected in a social or performance situation. When possible, they will avoid social or performance situations. When that is not possible, they can experience significant anxiety and distress which can include physical symptoms such as rapid heart rate, nausea, and sweating. Sometimes, it can trigger a full-blown panic attack. They recognize that their fear is irrational, but they feel powerless over their feelings. We also find that Chazal address the two sides of the spectrum of bashfulness and shyness. For although Chazal teach us that one of the defining traits and qualities of the Jewish people is bashfulness (Yevamos 79a), they also teach us that an excessively bashful person cannot properly learn (Avos 2, 5). Asking questions and discussing the taught material with a Rebbe is an integral part of learning which an excessively bashful person finds extremely difficult. If you or someone you know is suffering from SAD, contact a mental health professional who is experienced in the treatment of anxiety disorders. This is a service of Relief Resources. Relief is an organization that provides mental health referrals, education, and support to the frum community. Rabbi Yisrael Slansky is director of the Baltimore branch of Relief. y daughter, Leora Nachman, just released a cooking video on Kosher.com in which she demonstrates how to make pizza bourekas (make sure to watch it!). These are perfect for the upcoming Nine Days and it’s also a fun cooking activity to do with the kids. Yield: 8 bourekas Ingredients
Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 375. Lay your puff pastry squares on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper. 2. Spoon a small amount of marinara sauce on one corner of each puff pastry square, leaving room at the edges for the bourekas to seal properly.
3. Sprinkle cheese on the sauce, then sprinkle lightly with dried basil. 4. Fold the opposite corner over the filled side, creating a triangle shape. Use a fork to seal the edges. 5. With a pastry brush, brush beaten egg on the bourekas, then sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed or overworked, how about looking at it as gym-ed out?
Back up – for your phone charger. And again – should have changed your shoes, clothes, jacket! Oh no, one more time. Where’s your credit card holder?! By the way, do you belong to a gym? Wait, don’t say no, yet! Isn’t this experience like being on a stair-master all day? Sometimes, the best way to embrace the strenuous activities we do all day is to interpret them as the exercises we say that we need to do more of, such as walking, or running, or working out. When you lift a baby – think of it as lifting a weight. How about when you carry those supermarket bags in from the car – think of that as covering some of the
There’s a few squats right there. Planks? Didn’t you look under the couch for the shoe you couldn’t find? Abs: I’m sure you put on your socks and shoes today. And what about bending down to scratch those endless mosquito bites? That’s maybe like a hundred reps right there! So, when you’re feeling overwhelmed or overworked, how about looking at it as gym-ed out? Why work so hard and then on top of it be so hard on yourself?! You know, by feeling: I need to do more exercise. I’m not saying that you don’t have to. How would I know?! I’m just saying, try thinking of what you do already as legitimate exercise. Because that helps you embrace it more enthusiastically. And on top of that, it
lets you give yourself a little credit, too. You are, after all, getting a workout in! OK, now for those of you who say, “Nah, I’m at a computer or desk all day. I really do nothing.” Don’t forget that you very well could be doing isometrics. Isometrics is the static contraction of a muscle. You may be isometric-ing like crazy for hours and failing to give yourself all the deserved recognition! How about ... The next time you feel like beating yourself up for not going to the gym. first stop and freeze in one po-
sition for a few minutes really hard. That will cover the isometrics piece! Then, extract the KitchenAid you’ll need for Shabbos cooking or, alternatively, lift and check out the glitches at the bottom of your printer. That way, you can celebrate this necessary work as that fitness training you’ve been longing to pursue. So, here’s three cheers for you!

Few of the urban expats have returned, and many are surprised to find they prefer the pace and community of rural life to waiting hours for a table at the newest see-and-beseen bistro or club from $0.10 per $100 of value on the low end to $1.10 per $100 for homes over $10 million. Hawaii also has one of the highest state income taxes in the country, with a top rate of 11% kicking in on income over $200,000 (singles) or $400,000 (joint filers). Property taxes in general pinch
tions. The IRS even helpfully provided safe harbor sales tax amounts you could deduct if you lived in a state like Texas or Florida with no income tax. The new law caps that deduction at just $10,000. And sometimes, unique properties just mean unique property tax bills. Fox News heir Lachlan Murdoch
just bought “Chartwell,” the instantly-recognizable Clampett mansion from the Beverly Hillbillies. (Ironically, it’s set in Bel Air.) He’ll pay $1.3 million in annual tax on his new pad. Of course, he’ll get 25,000 square feet with 18 bedrooms, 24 baths, and a 12,500-bottle wine cellar set on 10 acres with a “see-ment pond” out back — so don’t feel too sorry for him. (Everyone in L.A. knows that Beverly Hills proper is where the poor rich people live.) Coronavirus is likely to inspire all sorts of changes in your life. And many of those changes will involve taxes. So be sure to bring us into those discussions. Remember that today’s trend towards virtual work means we can continue to serve your needs no matter where you move

oronavirus has millions of Americans rethinking where they choose to live, especially crowded cities. Back in February and March, New Yorkers led the charge, fleeing the petri dish that Manhattan had become to vacation homes in places like the Hamptons and Martha’s Vineyard. Silicon Valley tech-bros are gazing longingly across the Pacific to New Zealand. Few of the urban expats have returned, and many are surprised to find they prefer the pace and community of rural life to waiting hours for a table at the newest seeand-be-seen bistro or club. But where to settle for good? If you’re on Team Tropical, you should know that Hawaii County, encompassing the entire “Big Island” of Hawaii, is giving mainlanders even more incentive to make the island paradise their full-time home. While the county just raised tax on vacation and investment properties to $11.10 per $1,000 of taxable value up to $2 million, plus $13.60 per $1,000 above that amount, full-time residents will pay just $6.15 per $1,000, no matter how much their homes are worth. If you ever really “needed” an excuse to call Hawaii home, could this be it? Property tax on a million-dollar home averages $10,800 in the United States. But Hawaii has the lowest average property tax rate in the country, and the bill on that same million-dollar home would cost you just $2,880 in Honolulu County. Now imagine shelling out $23,580 on the same million-dollar home in Essex County, New Jersey — without the gentle breezes, perfect beaches, or ‘illima papa bushes with their beautiful yellow flowers! Unfortunately, while Hawaii has the lowest property tax rate, it also has the highest property values. According to Zillow.com, Hawaii’s median home value is $636,541.
