Dear readers, When I was a teenager, and we would form teams to play sports, I generally allowed the other captain to pick the better players. This meant he had the better team and was expected to win. My team, on the other hand, was expected to lose. An emotional winwin situation: if we won, everyone was impressed, and if we lost— well, what did you expect! While deferring decisions can come from a good place, especially on non-consequential issues, it can also be an escape from responsibility. “You decide; I’d rather not be responsible,” is a negative response if we are supposed to be in charge at that moment. Each one of us is supposed to be a leader in certain areas of our lives. If, in the name of humility, we shy away from that responsibility, saying, “Who am I?” we have not only failed those around us, we have failed ourselves. Taking a position of strength and focusing on what’s needed to get the job done isn’t selfish, it’s the right thing to do. As children, spouses, parents, and members of our community, we need to strengthen what we have to offer and play our specific instrument in the orchestra called life to the best of our ability. All previous generations have their eyes on our us, amazed at our resilience in the face apathy and at times mockery of all that we hold dear. Baltimore Celebrates 2 Months Since The Opening Of The Bais Chaburah

any Talmidim, returning to the States after spending a year learning in Eretz Yisroel at Yeshivos such as Ohr Samayach, Aish, Shappells, Machon Yaakov and Machon Shlomo, seek to settle in a Frum community. They are searching for opportunities for Shiurim, Chavrusa learning and likeminded Chaveirim. At the same time, they are seeking professional employment and even Shidduchim. It can be difficult to find them all in the same place. People can find it challenging when transitioning from Yeshiva into a new community, especially with the pressures of starting out on your own. Enter the Bais Chaburah The transition was made so much smoother - Talmidim were informed about our efforts on their behalf. A furnished apartment was rented and we were able to arrange daily Shiurim, Shabbos Seudos as well as Shidduch and Job Networking. This program, which was founded

by Rabbi Zvi Schwartz, is a new addition to his summer program of Jinternship. Due to COVID, this summer, the regular programming was changed. Phil Massey, a Jinternship Alumni and recent graduate from Penn State, took advantage of the opportunity to live at the Bais Chaburah and par-

ticipate in its many Shiurim. Phil is getting ready to go to Israel to spend a year at Ohr Samayach starting this Elul. Bezras Hashem the Chaburah is soon to finish Perek Ben Sorer U’Morer with Shiurim in Halacha, Chumash and Mishnah. The new approach is al-

ready achieving its goals with three of the participants having secured jobs. The Chaburah has generated much excitement and has provided a great opportunity for Talmidim returning from a year of growth at Yeshiva with the need to be engaged with experienced Rebbeim. The Shiurim are rooted in acquiring a Kinyan in Gemara and Hashkafa. Rabbi Schwartz says, “COVID has shined a light on the many Talmidim who are Moser Nefesh to learn a year at Yeshiva. When they return, they often have to live on their own without much support. In addition, it is a challenge to find the appropriate learning and social opportunities that are so vital. It’s incredible how the Bais Chaburah has turned this challenge around and created a Makom Torah that has attracted young men with so much talent and dedication. The Siyata Dishmaya and enthusiasm is very palpable. We look forward to continued growth”

“Stay Safe in Israel” Workshop for Students Going to Seminary

n the heels of the Israeli government’s decision to allow American high school graduates to enter the country for seminary and yeshiva, on Sunday, August 2nd, Bais Yaakov and Bnos Yisroel students attended the annual “Stay Safe in Israel” workshop, in social distance style of course. Led by Frank Storch and held at Bnos Yisroel, the workshop advised students on various useful tips. Students were provided a Stay Safe in Israel guide and a swag bag of essentials for their flight including KN95 masks for the plane. This year, the workshop topics covered basics such as what to plan for before the trip, personal and health safety during the year, etc. but also more current issues regarding Covid-19 safety concerns during travel. “As students prepare themselves for a year away from home where the focus is on learning independence and growing spiritually and emotionally, another important priority must be their safety and security. Students need to learn to be mindful and always alert of their surroundings. Obviously, that is important in the United States as well but even more so in Israel. Whether that means students need to remember to lock the door to their dorm building or respond correctly to a suspicious object on a bus, awareness is a critical tool that a can potentially save lives,” said Mr. Storch. Rabbi Tzvi Gluck of Amudim said, “There are so many personal safety and security risks when young adults are traveling and experiencing new things in new places. Without parental guidance, the Stay Safe in Israel guide is a strong resource and tool for teenagers living on their own for the first time and I have had students tell me that the guide’s Israel Emergency Card, which lists critical emergency phone numbers, has saved them numerous times.” Bnos Yisroel Principal, Mrs. Ahuvah Heyman, noted how the guide is always so appreciated by students and parents since it provides a thor-

The presentation makes the girls think about how to respond in different scenarios to ensure their safety. For example, what should they do if they are running late and won’t make it back in time for curfew? Is it really worth getting in a taxi that might not be safe or is it better to call their madricha, explain the situation, and get in a taxi that may take longer to arrive but is from a trusted company? These are hard decisions to make and without considering all the consequences students may make the wrong choice and unfortunately even a dangerous one. Obviously, not every circumstance can be predicted or planned for but just showing the girls to approach their behavior with a safety perspective in mind is invaluable.” Regarding Covid, Mr. Storch suggests, “Maximize safety protocols when booking flights, at the airport, and on the plane. Online check-in or touchless check in options must be explored to limit exposure.” He stressed to students the importance of keeping their masks on except for when eating and to make sure to bring and use hand sanitizer often. Students were also reminded to choose a window seat so there is less contact with people, and to disinfect plane seats, armrests, and tray tables. ens of thousands of vote-bymail ballots were rejected and went uncounted in Maryland’s June primary, according to a summary of the state’s first vote-by-mail election triggered by the coronavirus pandemic. The tally of rejected ballots was 34,948, which amounted to 2.39% of the nearly 3.6 million mail-in votes that were cast. The numbers, while considered low by state elections authorities, are an indication that voting by mail brings a higher risk of errors that can disqualify ballots, according to State Board of Elections deputy administrator Nikki Charlson. The percentages were in-line with previous absentee voting figures and did not affect the outcome of any races, Charleson said. She noted that in-person voting results in much lower error rates, while the vote-by-mail primary resulted in higher than normal participation rates. “We do see a higher rate of rejecting ballots with absentee,” Charleson said. “You’re just not completing the process in the presence of trained election officials.” Leading reasons for the rejection of ballots during the June primary were a failure to get the ballot mailed in time and a failure to sign the ballot envelope to verify the voter’s identity.

There is an extremely low incidence of people voting more than once. During the June primary, the Board of Elections disqualified 181 ballots out of 3.5 million, or .00005% of votes cast for voting more than one ballot. Charlson explained that in the past some voters have turned up at polls in-person even after casting an absentee ballot. She said the numbers do not indicate any widespread fraud. Charleson noted vote-by-mail ballots have an envelope that is bar-coded with an individual voter ID tracking number to verify every voter. Voters must also sign the envelope to verify their identity, or the ballot will be rejected. In Maryland, mail-in ballots for the November General Election must be requested. Requests can be made online, or by texting the letters VBM to 77788. Additionally, ballot request applications will be mailed to every registered voter beginning Aug. 24. Voters who want to vote-by-mail or by leaving a ballot in a drop box must fill out the application and return it before receiving a ballot.

a r y l a n d ’ s unemployment rate fell to 7.6 percent in July, preliminary data released by the U.S. Department of Labor Friday shows. The state added 53,900 jobs in July, reducing the unemployment rate from 8.3 to 7.6 percent. Nationwide, the unemployment rate sits at 10.2 percent.

Maryland’s unemployment rate is below neighboring states, the data shows. Delaware and Pennsylvania sit at 10.4 percent unemployment, while Virginia saw eight percent unemployment in July. Washington, D.C.’s unemployment rate, meanwhile, sits at 8.4 percent. Just under half of Maryland’s job growth in July came from the leisure and hospitality industry, while the education and health services sectors saw slight job losses.

JCSL by Shimz Cars Regular Season Complete; Top 4 Teams Prepare For Post-Season

It was a fun and grueling regular season but the dust has settled and the top four teams have made their way into the Premier Financial post-season where they will vie for a spot in the championship and the chance to bring home the coveted, Premier Financial Trophy. Fired Up Promotions LBSI will play Fired Up Promotions while Levin and Gann will play Fired Up Promotions this coming Sunday (8/30) at 9:30 AM. In what was a wild back-and-forth affair, Fired Up Promotions came out on top, grabbing the final playoff spot by capitalizing on Ab Reznick’s 4 hits, which included a walkoff, game-winning, bases-clearing double in the bottom of the ninth. Early in the game, Fired Up grabbed the reigns claiming a 6-1 lead. But Donny Ankri Architects battled back and took the lead in the fourth. Fired Up regained the upper hand, taking a 9-5 headed into the top of the seventh. Donny Ankri himself tied the game at 9 with some clutch hitting but Fired Up’s Shloimie Scheinfeld responded by hitting an impressive two-run double to give Fired Up an 11-9 lead. The Architects once again fought back and took a 14-13 lead into the ninth. The Architects threatened again in the top of the ninth, scoring one more run and loading the bases with only one out. But it would be Fired Up 3B Noam Shiman who saved the day, scooping a hard grounder, stepping on third for one out and then making a strong throw to the plate to complete an inning ending double play. The Chiropractors jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to the aggressive baserunning of Yehuda Abedon but on the very next play, Hillel Stutman was thrown out at the plate by 1st baseman Shlomo Rosenstein, putting an end to the early rally. As the game went on, Kaylah Diamonds took over, scoring 10 unanswered runs, capped off by a 2 run, opposite field homerun by Moshe Tuchman. It was a well-played, fun, competitive game, but Kaylah Diamonds was just too much for the Chiropractors and was able to take home the W with a final score of 10-2.

Hashgacha work is more challenging than ever during COVID. Rabbi Tendler presented a webinar/video tour of how to visit a plant during the pandemic geared for the agency’s mashgichim. And, for those who find themselves eating more homemade meals, Rabbi Tendler presented a virtual practicum so consumers can check their own fruits and vegetables for toloyim (insects). in STAR-K’s first virtual Zoom seminar. The successful two-hour-plus seminar was conducted entirely in Spanish, introducing the world of Kosher and the advantage of reliable Kosher certification to food processors and exporters from numerous industries. A Q & A session followed; even after the seminar, participants emailed additional questions. Although kosher consumers have limited their air travel during COVID, many are driving to closer vacation destinations. STAR-K’s popular annual “Kosher Travel” webinar, hosted by Rabbi Zvi Goldberg, discussed everything there is to know about hotel, cabin, and bungalow stays. Featuring STAR-K Kashrus Administrator Rabbi Baruch Beyer, topics included: Continental Breakfasts; Shabbos; the use of appliances in hotel rooms/ vacation homes; barbecue grills; and the latest Slurpee information. STAR-K’s Robust Educational Mission Thrives…Even During COVID

For those consumers who are not venturing out – on vacation or even to a local food store -- Rabbi Goldberg hosted a “COVID-19 Kashrus” webinar featuring STAR-K Kashrus Administrator Rabbi Sholom Tendler. Discussion topics included food shopping from home and which products require kosher certification and which don’t. Rabbi Tendler’s onsite video tour with a mashgiach at a STAR-K restaurant demonstrated how social distancing and other COVID-related protocols are being implemented in STAR-K food establishments.

Last, but not least, STAR-K Kashrus Administrator Rabbi Dovid Heber, held a Zoom seminar with the high-functioning special-needs young adults of Harmony Services/Kinor Dovid, a day-habilitation program located in Brooklyn, New York. Rabbi Heber held a Q & A session on the appropriate bracha to make on a variety of cereals and other items. I was invited to return on Zoom the following week, as a follow-up to Rabbi Heber’s shiur, to speak to this audience about STAR-K. One of Harmony’s rebbeim/mentors, Rabbi Moshe Boylan, who arranged the program, expressed his thanks in a letter: Dear Mrs. Pensak, Thank you so much for interviewing our chevra in Harmony Services/ Kinor Dovid. NEW Graphic Design courses at Women’s Institute of Torah Seminary & College (WITS) The Graphic Design minor at WITS has been completely redesigned for the 2020-2021 academic year. The minor is now comprised of nine NEW courses that teach up to date design concepts through print and web-based lessons and projects. All courses will be taught on new Mac computers using the latest versions of Adobe programs. Our program coordinator, Mrs. Goldie Silberberg, has created a curriculum that will teach design concepts through web-based lessons and projects. Our graphic design students will develop a sophisticated approach to creative problem solving and hone skills in branding, image generation, corporate identity, web design, and information graphics. Through these courses, our faculty of experienced designers will teach our students to

gain fluency in the fundamental tools of visual communication design: typography, color and layout. Students will learn to apply advanced skills with the Adobe workflow and produce a portfolio filled with cutting edge graphic design. These courses are open to women of the community and can be taken remotely. Students will be able to build strong, marketable graphic design skills wherever they live. Kushner to Make Israel Trip Jared Kushner is slated to make a surprise trip to Israel in the first week of September accompanied by White House envoy to the peace process, Avi Berkowitz. President Trump’s National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien and Iran envoy Brian Hooke are also expected to join the delegation. According to reports, Kushner and Berkowitz want to congratulate leaders in Israel and the United Arab Emirates on their recent normalization agreement and get updated on how negotiations are progressing.

Apart from visiting Jerusalem, the senior Trump administration officials will head to the United Arab Emirates. While in Israel, Kushner is expected to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Benny Gantz. In Abu Dhabi, the U.S. delegation will huddle with Crown Prince Muhammad bin Zayed. In addition, the White House is currently trying to coordinate meet-

ings in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman. President Donald Trump recently said that he hoped Saudi Arabia would join Abu Dhabi in normalizing its ties with the Jewish state while rumors swirl that Bahrain and Oman will announce their own agreement with Israel shortly. Trump is reportedly seeking to mark the newfound peace agreement between Israel and the UAE by hosting a celebratory signing ceremony in September at the White House’s Rose Garden. Even if no additional Arab countries establish diplomatic relations with Israel by then, the White House wants representatives from a slew of Arab states to attend the event. However, Israeli and Arab officials say that hammering out the final agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates is expected to take longer than expected. Both countries have tapped special negotiations task forces with bringing the deal to completion since the historic breakthrough was announced in early August.

Turkey’s President Recep Erdogan has vowed to lead a united front against normalization with Israel following the recent diplomatic breakthrough between the Jewish state and the UAE. In a phone conversation with PA President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday, Erdogan reiterated his full and unrelenting support for the Palestinian cause. Blasting the UAE for normalizing its relations with Israel, Erdogan called on other Arab countries to battle the Jewish State “and not accept any step of normalization before the Palestinians achieve their independence with East Jerusalem is its capital.” The Turkish leader added that he will call an urgent meeting of the foreign ministers of the member states of the Islamic Cooperation Organization to express their support for the PA. Abbas responded by thanking Erdogan for his efforts to unite the various Palestinian factions in order to thwart Israel’s diplomatic moves. Erdogan has emerged as a vocal opponent of Abu Dhabi’s decision to normalize its relations with Israel. Soon after the breakthrough was announced, he threatened to suspend Turkey’s diplomatic ties with the UAE and recall its envoy. Later, Erdogan said that “history will never forgive” any Arab country that agrees to official ties with Jerusalem. “The move against Palestine is not a step that can be stomached. Now, Palestine is either closing or withdrawing its embassy,” said Erdogan. “The same thing is valid for us now. “I told him [the foreign minister] we may also take a step in the direction of suspending diplomatic ties with the Abu Dhabi leadership or pulling back our ambassador.” While Israel and Turkey are officially allies, the bilateral ties between Ankara and Jerusalem have deteriorated over the last decade. Israel’s embassy in Turkey has remained empty ever since its diplomats were expelled in 2016, and the IDF’s annual intelligence report recently listed Turkey as a threat for the first time. Erdogan, who leads an Islamist movement, is also a strong supporter of the Hamas terror group and allows its leadership to operate out of his country’s capital. Hamas’ activities in Turkey include planning attacks

against Israel, raising money, and recruiting new members.

Israel to Bar Flights to Uman

Israel’s coronavirus czar confirmed that he will ban flights to Ukraine in the weeks leading up to Rosh Hashana in order to prevent people from embarking on pilgrimages to Uman. In an interview on Saturday evening, Professor Roni Gamzu warned that the thousands of chassidim seeking to visit Rabbi Nachman of Breslov’s burial site in Uman were liable to become “a coronavirus terror attack.” Noting that the gravesite visits to Uman are characterized by thousands of people who stay in cramped and crowded conditions, Gamzu said that Israel had no choice other than to prohibit its citizens from traveling there. “Uman is not a holiday in Tishrei, and it is not a sacred thing. It is merely a party and should not be done. It can bring us closer to another full lockdown,” said Gamzu. “The entire government should be determined to win the trust of the public and tell the chassidim not to travel to Uman at this time.” He added, “This is pikuach nefesh. I hereby announce – there will be no flights to Uman. Last Thursday, Gamzu demanded that the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Coronavirus Cabinetâ&#x20AC;? order the Israeli Airports Authority to completely cancel all current scheduled flights to Ukraine and airports with connecting flights to Kiev.Â Later, he tweeted that the popular holiday pilgrimage would result â&#x20AC;&#x153;in a mass contagion event not only among thousands of passengers but also among locals in Ukraine.â&#x20AC;? Gamzu also sent an official letter to Ukraineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prime minister requesting that he ban Israeli citizens from entering.Â The letter came after the Ukrainian government reversed an earlier decision to refuse entry to people traveling to Uman. Instead, anyone who could prove that they tested negative for the virus would be allowed into the country but would need to follow social distancing guidelines.Â In the meantime, Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Health Ministry is pressuring Breslov leaders to order their followers to forgo traveling to Uman this Rosh Hashana.

Dodging Shin Bet Tracking Israelis are using innovative methods to dodge the Shin Betâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s phone tracking system.Â Ever since the initial coronavirus outbreak in March, Israel has been using the Shin Bet security service for its contact tracing efforts.Â While the intelligence agency usually utilizes its substantial phone tracking capabilities to fight terrorism, it was put into service to detect who had been near known disease carriers.Â The signals intelligence apparatus pinpoints a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s location by triangulating its data with nearby cell phone towers. While effective in uncovering terror cells in the West Bank, the system is notoriously faulty when used to fight the coronavirus outbreak and has mistakenly sent as much as 50,000 Israelis into mandatory quarantine.Â Among other things, the Shin Bet is incapable of knowing if a disease carrier and a nearby person are in different rooms, if they came within six feet of each other, or if they were even on

the same floor. In recent weeks, more and more Israelis have been complaining that they received a text message informing them that they had been in contact with a coronavirus carrier at a time they were sleeping or alone at home. With no way to appeal the Shin Betâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision, Israelis are beginning to use methods commonly practiced by terrorists to evade surveillance.Â According to media reports, the most common practice is leaving home without oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s smartphone or leaving it on airplane mode.Â Another method is switching to a â&#x20AC;&#x153;dumb phoneâ&#x20AC;? that is not connected to the internet. Sales of such devices have jumped 200% since the tracking program began as Israelis turn to them to avoid â&#x20AC;&#x153;false positivesâ&#x20AC;? that would force them to quarantine for no reason.Â The adoption of such tactics has the Shin Bet worried that its expensive technological means will be ineffective in fighting terrorism as militants will discover new ways to thwart its surveillance system. Last month, Shin Bet head Nadav Argaman pleaded with the security cabinet not to extend his agencyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mandate, telling ministers that it was doing â&#x20AC;&#x153;catastrophic damageâ&#x20AC;? to its intelligence gathering abilities.Â In addition, Israeli lawmakers are concerned that the growing tendency to evade the Shin Betâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tracking will hamper the effort to curb the pandemicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spread. This challenge is compounded by the fact that, as a democratic state, Israel has no way to ban its citizens from utilizing such tactics.Â â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a problem,â&#x20AC;? admitted Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ultimately, we are not a police state. We will not manage to compel the citizens of the State of Israel to keep to the health regulations.â&#x20AC;?

The Week In News ties reached a last-minute deal to avert sending Israel to its fourth election in the last two years. According to Israeli law, the government had until Monday to pass a budget for 2020. Had it failed to do so, the Knesset would have automatically dissolved itself and new elections would have been called. Passing a budget was expected to be a routine matter, yet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted that the government pass a one year budget despite agreeing with Kahol Lavan leader Benny Gantz to pass a bi-annual budget during coalition negotiations in March. The impasse was widely viewed as a ploy by Netanyahu to call new elections in order to prevent Gantz from replacing him as prime minister. As per the terms of the national unity government, Gantz would replace Netanyahu as Israel’s leader should the government collapse for any reason other than failing to approve a budget. With the clock ticking down, Kahol Lavan and the Likud agreed to pass a bill delaying the deadline for approving a budget by 120 days. As part of the compromise, the two parties will freeze nominations of senior civil service officials such as the State Attorney and Israel Police Commissioner for an additional three months. The deal was initiated by Derech Eretz lawmaker Zvi Hauser, a former member of both the Likud and Kahol Lavan. Hauser had used his connections with the leaders of both ruling parties to broker the compromise in order to avert sending Israel to another round of elections. While Kahol Lavan agreed immediately to Hauser’s proposal, Netanya-

hu was noncommittal. After days of deliberation, Netanyahu announced that he accepted the compromise in a prime-time press conference on Sunday evening following days of escalating political drama. “Out of national responsibility I decided to accept the compromise proposal of MK Hauser,” the prime minister said. “This proposal enables the immediate flow of funds to citizens and the economy, and it prevents the need for elections.” While maintaining that it is “time for unity and not for elections,” Netanyahu bashed Kahol Lavan for acting as a “government inside the government.” An election would find the Likud in a precarious position, as both the party and Netanyahu have been steadily dropping in the polls as of late. A survey commissioned by Army Radio last week found that the Likud would get only 31 seats in the event of an election, down from 40 in June. In addition, 59% of respondents said that Netanyahu would be responsible for the collapse of the coalition, while only 34% viewed him as fit to remain as prime minister.

at Jerusalem’s objection to a U.S. sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets to Abu Dhabi. The sit-down was slated to occur in New York City on Friday and would have featured Washington’s UN Ambassador Kelly Kraft, Israeli Envoy Gilad Erdan, and UAE Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba. The summit planned on celebrating the decision by the UAE and Israel to establish full diplomatic relations and would have been the first joint event since the breakthrough was announced. But the Emiratis called off the summit due to displeasure with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s public opposition to the F-35 deal with Washington. A source heavily involved in the happenings told Walla news that senior UAE officials canceled the meeting to send a message to Israel that they were disappointed with Netanyahu’s promise to oppose the F-35 deal when the matter comes before U.S. Congress. The UAE had reportedly been under the impression that Netanyahu would refrain from publicly opposing the F-35 deal even if he himself was against it. As a result, Abu Dhabi was blindsided by the premier’s promise last week that he would do everything possible to prevent Israel’s newfound allies from buying the stealth jet. A major part of the UAE’s decision to normalize its covert relations with Israel was the assumption that the move would result in Congressional approval for the Gulf state to purchase the stealth jet. The U.S. is legally bound to ensure that Israel maintains a qualitative military edge over its neighbors, and Congress, which must approve all weapons deals, is unlikely to allow such advanced technology to be sold to an Arab state without Israel’s acquiescence. Currently, Israel is the only country in the Middle East that possesses the fifth generation F-35 joint strike fighter. However, the UAE, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia have been pressuring the U.S. to sell them the jet as well due to its superior stealth capabilities. Shortly after the breakthrough with the UAE was announced, an uproar broke out in Israel regarding allegations that Netanyahu removed Israel’s opposition to the F-35 deal as a condition for the peace treaty. Netanyahu has denied the allegations despite claims to the contrary by UAE and American of-

ficials. In a meeting with Netanyahu on Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo promised to always maintain Israel’s military edge but admitted that the Trump administration will likely approve the sale of the F-35’s to Abu Dhabi. “The U.S. has legal requirements with respect to the QME, and we will respect that,” Pompeo said. “We have a 20-plus year security relationship with the UAE as well.” However, Pompeo said that the United States needed to “‘make sure we are delivering the equipment the UAE needs to defend themselves from the…threat of the Islamic Republic.”

Steve Bannon in Hot Water Former senior Trump administration advisor Steve Bannon and three other people are facing federal fraud charges in connection to a crowd-funded effort to build a wall on the border with Mexico. Bannon and Brian Kolfage were arrested last Thursday on a yacht off the coast of Connecticut and were handed over to New York City prosecutors. Bannon pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Bannon was released the same day on a $5 million bond backed by $2 million in real estate. Outside the Manhattan courthouse, Bannon called the arrest “a political hit job” designed to prevent him and others from building a wall on the Mexican border. “This entire fiasco is to stop people who want to build the wall,” Bannon told reporters. According to prosecutors, Bannon and four other co-defendants misappropriated donations given to the crowdfunded effort, We Build The Wall. Established in 2018, the non-profit raised $25 million for the federal government to use to construct a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. While the group represented itself as a non-profit and promised that

To hide the fact that they were misappropriating the funds, the defendants used an elaborate system to make it appear as if they were paying vendors. This included paying fictitious straw companies, printing false receipts, and paying spouses and other family members for non-existent goods and services. The indictment said that, despite reassuring the public “repeatedly and falsely” that they would “not take a penny” for themselves, Bannon and the others “systematically defrauded” donors by using fake invoices and sham ‘vendor’ arrangements.” Each charge carries a maximum 20 year prison sentence.

$600M to Flint Residents The State of Michigan will pay $600 million to Flint residents in order to settle multiple lawsuits over the city’s water crisis. The agreement comes after five years of legal battles between the state and those harmed by Flint’s contaminated water supply. Thousands of residents have fallen ill with diseases related to lead exposure after the city began using the polluted Flint River as a water source in 2014. The settlement creates a fund for the victims of Flint’s contaminated water supply, with 80% of the funds earmarked for children who were under 18 years of age when the crisis began. Additional financial compensation will be used to fund special education programs for students who suffered behavior damage caused by lead exposure. While the settlement covers senior Michigan officials past and present, including former Governor Rick Snyder and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), litigation will continue against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and private companies responsible for the disaster. Upon announcing the break-

through, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer acknowledged that it “may not completely provide all that Flint needs” but maintained that it constituted “one step on the road to justice.” “What happened in Flint should have never happened, and financial compensation with this settlement is just one of the many ways we can continue to show our support for the city of Flint and its families,” said Whitmer after the settlement was announced last Thursday. “We hear and respect those voices and understand that healing Flint will take a long time ... 750M Genetically Modified Mosquitoes A controversial project that will release 750 million genetically modified insects in the Florida Keys received its final approval on Friday from state officials. The project is overseen by the Oxitec biotechnology company and will inject millions of male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes onto southern Florida in 2021. With the male bugs genetically altered to prevent future procreation, Florida officials hope that they will mate with their female counterparts. This would destroy the native mosquito population by preventing them from laying eggs, reducing the transmission of dangerous diseases such as dengue or Zika virus. The project has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and has already been implemented in Brazil. “This is an exciting development because it represents the groundbreaking work of hundreds of passionate people over more than a decade in multiple countries, all of whom want to protect communities from dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and other vec-

tor-borne diseases,” said Oxitec CEO Grey Frandsen. The project has been heavily criticized by environmental groups, who warn that it could result in unintended consequences and is liable to devastate native ecosystems. Opponents allege that the lab-grown mosquitoes are liable to transmit diseases to native Floridians and say that the full longterm effects of the program have not yet been studied. Kellyanne Conway Quits Kellyanne Conway, a senior advisor in the Trump administration, announced that she will be departing the White House by next month to focus on her family. Conway’s husband, George, a prominent anti-Trump activist, will also leave his job at the Never Trump Lincoln Project PAC for similar reasons. “I will be transitioning from the White House at the end of this month. George is also making changes,” said Kellyanne Conway in a statement. “We disagree about plenty but we are united on what matters most: the kids. However, a lack of effective alternatives, as well as a desire to preserve the patient-doctor relationship, both contribute to antibiotic over-prescription.” Researchers said that it’s difficult to determine the degree to which honey improved the symptoms, as it is a complex and heterogeneous substance. Regardless, the team recommended honey as an effective alternative to

Hoping to determine what flag works best for its residents, Mississippi will be flying five flags on August 25 in Jackson. Voters will decide on which new flag will replace the flag that had included the Confederate battle emblem. The five proposed designs were chosen by the Mississippi State Flag Commission. The flags will fly so people could see how they look fluttering in the breeze or hanging limply without wind. The Week In News the phrase, “In G-d We Trust.” Almost 3,000 flag designs were submitted to the commission; five were ultimately chosen to present to voters. The five designs include those with a shield with wavy lines representing water; the Mississippi River snaking along the state’s western border, plus a magnolia blossom; two others with magnolia blossoms; and one with a stylized magnolia tree. Each has a star made of diamond shapes that are important to the state’s Choctaw culture.

Home Sweet Home

There’s no place like home, even though it may take you a long time to get there. Three months ago, Solomon the tortoise embarked on quite the adventure. The 150-pound Sulcata tortoise managed to escape from his home in Ashland City, Tennessee. His owner, Lynn Cole, frantically searched for the 15-year-old slow-moving reptile but was not able to locate him. Cole searched for 74 days, hung up hundreds of fliers, and posted myriad pictures on social media to find her hard-backed friend. Finally, on Thursday, Cole received the long-awaited phone call. A man had spotted Solomon at a construction site just an eighth of a mile from Cole’s home. She and her husband rushed to bring Solomon home. Solomon came back tried, hungry, and caked in mud. Cole immediately brought him his favorite dish – collard greens, broccoli, cauliflower, and watermelon rinds.

Hopefully, Solomon’s wandering days are over. “People are surprised to know that he’s very attached to his humans, and he’s very happy to be home,” Cole said. Being that Sulcata tortoises can live more than 100 years, Solomon has many more years to live happily ever after.

$350 PB&J

This isn’t your typical peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The Golden Goose sandwich, which is on the menu at a restaurant in Chicago called PB&J (Pizza, Beer and Jukebox), is one for the record books. The upscale classic sandwich is made with “toasted edible gold leaf bread,” “all-natural peanut butter,” manuka honey from New Zealand, and “the world’s most expensive” seedless redcurrant jam from Maison Dutriez in France, which, according to the menu, is “hand-seeded using goose quills.” The price for this over-the-top lunchbox staple? A whopping $350. The Golden Goose — which needs to be ordered one day in advance — is officially the world’s most expensive PB&J, according to the Robb Report Restaurant owners Matthew and Josh McCahill came up with the idea after spotting a similarly decadent PB&J selling for hundreds of dollars. Another out-of-control PB&J was served at the now-closed Red’s Golden Gourmet in San Diego for $299. It featured peanut butter, jelly, blueberries, bananas, bacon, and two sterling silver, gold-plated toothpicks. Matthew McCahill says that the inspiration also came from his childhood. “The inspiration actually comes from when I was a child and we grew up very poor and we were eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and then just peanut butter sandwiches,

and then just peanut butter,” said Matthew, noting the irony of his idea for the menu item. Nothing is simple anymore.

Slogan Social Distancing Well, if you thought that it was important to maintain six-feet social distancing, KFC is taking it to another level. Kentucky Fried Chicken, the crispy chicken giant, is now scrapping its famous “finger lickin’ good” slogan because it may give customers ideas about licking their fingers at a time when people should be vigilant about keeping their hands clean. On Monday, the company said that the 64-year-old slogan “doesn’t feel quite right.”

“We find ourselves in a unique situation — having an iconic slogan that doesn’t quite fit in the current environment,” said Catherine Tan-Gillespie, global chief marketing officer at KFC in a statement. The slogan, though, will return when the “time is right.” For now, the company has blurred out the offending words. To be sure, this week’s announcement is a sneaky marketing ploy. The company has produced self-effacing campaigns in the past. For example, it has hawked chicken-scented clogs, chicken-scented logs, and, best of all, “finger lickin’ good” chicken-flavored edible nail polish. Word to the wise: It’s best not to lick your fingers when they’re covered with hand sanitizer.

Car Subscriptions If you are having trouble committing to things, Porsche may be the

right car for you. The automaker is committed to helping customers who have commitment issues by announcing that it is adding a new, lower-cost single-car tier to its Porsche Drive subscription program, which was launched in Atlanta in 2017 and is currently available Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Diego, and Los Angeles. While the original program gives subscribers access to a fleet of sports cars, sedans, and SUVs that they can swap between as often as they like, with maintenance and insurance included, the new option locks them into one model for one or three months. For now, there are only 325 subscribers to Porsche’s easy-come-easygo program. They’re generally younger than a typical Porsche buyer and stick with the program for an average of four months. “We’re not just doing it. We’re doing it because so far we have seen it to be successful,” Porsche North America CEO Klaus Zellmer said. “If you are customer-centric, if you are into flexibility that your customers demand, if you are searching for new target groups, and just one figure that hasn’t changed in almost three years now is that 80 percent of our members in those subscription programs are new to the brand.” Zellmer said that having cars that people “desire to drive” is a plus, and that about 10 percent of subscribers do go on to purchase a Porsche. He’s not sure yet if that figure is good or bad, because the program is meant to stand apart from the company’s traditional model. Porsche sold a record 61,568 vehicles in the U.S. in 2019 and 26,290 through the first half of this year. Pricing for the single-car plan runs from $1,500 per month for a Macan SUV to $2,600 for a 911 Carrera compared to $2,100 to $3,100 for the multi-car plans. A $595 activation fee is waived for customers who opt for a three-month single-car program. The cars are delivered and maintained via a concierge service, as long as the subscriber is within 20 miles of the dealership operating the fleet, which is refreshed every six to 12 months. If committing to a subscription program is still too much for you, consider Porsche’s daily rental program, which starts at $245 a day.

There are certain flaws that are chronic and cannot be cured. The male members of the nation of Ammon and Moav, the products of the incestuous act of desperation when the daughters of Lot thinking the world was coming to an end mated with their father Lot, are forever condemned, despite having converted to Judaism, from entering the congregation of G-d, prohibited from ever marrying a standard Jewish women. The reason for their being so ostracized stems from their ancestors lack of gratitude to the descendants of Avraham Avinu. Despite the fact that Avraham saved their patriarch Lot and their mothers — the daughters of Lot, first from captivity in the hands of the four kings in the battle of the four and five kings and once again years later from the upheaval of Sodom, owing their entire existence to his intervention and merit on their behalf, they betrayed this loyal ‘brother’ when Avraham’s descendants left Egypt, ignoring this beaten relative, never offering them bread and water, nor any brotherly concern. It would seem then, that this trait of ingratitude is anathema to the essence of what comprises a Jew. Could it be that simply not going forward in greeting their relative and offering food and drink disqualifies all its male descendants for all of posterity from ever attaining a full status as a member in the congregation of G-d? The Torah though adds one more reason why the Moabites are to be shunned. The Moabites fearing being overtaken by their ‘cousins’, hired Bilaam to curse and eradicate the Jewish nation. Wouldn’t this desire to place a powerful curse upon them eclipse the

rather minor offense of their not having reached out to them in kindness? Why would the Torah even mention their lack of brotherhood as a sign of their ungratefulness when they displayed a much harsher display of this character flaw in wanting to affect them with terrible curses? There is a famous Yiddish expression that goes: ‫וואס האב איך איהם‬ ‫אזוי פיל גוטס געטאן אז ער האט מיך אזוי‬ ?‫ — פיינט‬What great favor have I done to him that he hates me so much? It is one thing to lack appreciation for a kindness done, but when one’s ego doesn’t let him rest in the knowledge that he is indebted to someone else, prodding him not merely to defensively ignore the favor that came his way but to develop a hatred for the one that exposes ‘my’ vulnerability, that is when ingratitude becomes a fatal flaw. One who is totally absorbed with himself and his wants, needing constant validation, will be incapable not only of gratitude but in valuing another person at all. Lot is saved from the upheaval of Sodom. The angel directs him to seek refuge on the mountain. Lot begs to let him stay in Tzoar instead, which is closer by. The Midrash explains that Lot feared being in the proximity of Avraham which would make him pale in significance and preferred being among others of lesser stature so that he may appear righteous. The angel accedes to his request. Did the angel err in directing him to a location that might endanger Lot due to his diminished standing? Certainly not. His concession was an affirmation of Lot’s inability to see beyond himself, which didn’t permit

him to be portrayed as saved solely in the merit of Avraham. How indignant! Even when his very life is at stake Lot’s narcissistic attitude pleads desperately for a meager portion of merit, enabling him to ‘survive’ on his own credit, denying the merit of his loving, selfless and devoted Uncle/brother-inlaw, Avraham. How pathetic. One who is blind to anyone but oneself is undeserving of kindness. In fact, regarding this nation specifically the Torah forewarns — You shall not seek their peace or welfare, all your days, forever. The Targum Yonoson on this verse asserts that this prohibition extends not only to the gentile members of these nations but even to a Ammonite or Moabite who converted and is now fully Jewish is afflicted with this ‘genetic’ flaw and one must refrain from acting kindly toward him so as not to violate this prohibition to ‘not seek his welfare’. Is it possible to fathom that the ‘Torah of Kindness’ could expect someone to survive amongst our people without ever being the recipient of kind-heartedness? Rabbi Eliezer of Metz, the 12th century French Tosafist, asserts that kindness may not be initiated to the members of this corrupt nation but one may repay acts of benevolence they have extended our way, with kindness in turn. He brings proof from an episode where King David acted kindly towards Chanun, the son of the Ammonite king Nachash, in gratitude to his father Nachash who gave refuge to a member of King David’s family. Perhaps the antidote to this inherent defect is to force a member of these imperfect nations to become so devoted and selfless towards their fellow Jews so that others in turn will be permitted to respond to them in kind. The very first message in the acronym of Elul alluding to the verse in Shir HaShirim, ‫ודודי לי‬- ‫אני לדודי‬, I am

to my beloved and my beloved is to me, is the word ‫אני‬, ‘I’. We must first discover ourselves. Who am ‘I’, indeed? The great Gaon, Rabbi Shimon Shkop writes that our job is to expand the who ‘I’ am to include our family, friends, community and the world, coming to the understanding that we were placed in this world to define who we are by the yardstick of how far reaching our actions are in impacting the world around us. “If I am not for myself, who is?”— Each one of us must take ownership of that responsibility, to define the ‘I’ — for no one else can. “But if I am for myself, who am I?” — If we only seek to placate our personal needs and stoke our ego, existing solely within the space from the top of our heads to the sole of our feet, then we are indeed nothing, and have no true identity. )‫(הקדמה שערי יושר‬ One of the tactics of Elul in assuring a successful Day Judgment, the great scholar and ethicist, Rabbi Yisroel Salanter suggests, is to become a person, ‫שרבים צריכים לו‬, whom the masses need him. In the words of the famed Mashgiach, Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe: The masses need him - one who is not an egoist, one who does not live for himself! His attributes: kindness, patience, love for humanity. Pure in fear, who toils in Torah. One doesn’t have to be an Askan, a community official but just to share in the burden of others even if he never leaves the walls of his four cubits. The true image of a Jew is one who is valued and needed by others. May we each become ‘men of the world’ in defining the special role we each play in promoting the honor of Heaven. In that merit we are guaranteed a favorable judgment on Rosh Hashana.

for a Shabbos-observing Jew in the early 20th century was not easy in America. Friday after Friday, men would be ﬁred from their jobs. It took a courageous group of men to make the move upstate where it would be easier to ﬁnd an occupation that would not interfere with their values. In the summer of 1920, the Woodbourne Shul was founded. The shul was not just a place where people came to daven. It was an active center for an active Jewish community. What better place to hold a slaugh-

terhouse for kosher meat than the back room of the shul? The years passed with much victory and advancement for the Shabbos Jew. The city boasted large communities with many job opportunities. Slowly, the children of so many ended up moving back, seeking their fortune there. Across America, hundreds of shuls were forced to close their doors, boarding them up or selling them to others. The glorious Woodbourne Shul did not escape that fate. At the turn of the millennia, eighty years after opening, saturated with thousands of teﬃlos and

dozens of bar mitzvah celebrations, the shul had no choice but to close its beautiful doors forever. The board members were adamant that a holy ediﬁce as such should not be sold or deﬁled. For ten long years, the shul sat boarded up in silence, waiting. There was an elderly woman, well into her eighties, devotedly caring for the kever of the Menuchas Asher, Rav Asher Anshil, of blessed memory. When asked what prompted this, she replied: “When I was in my forties, the doctors had already given up on my life. I prostrated myself on the kever and tear-

fully davened. Ever since then, I devotedly maintain the upkeep of this special tzaddik’s resting place.” The legacy of this miracle worker continued when his son replanted his father’s community in Crown Heights. The kehilla was of great acclaim and merited an annual visit from the Satmar Rav, Rav Yoel. It was in this setting that the next generation, Rav Mordechai Zev Jungreis, Nikolsburger Rebbe, was born. Every alumnus of Yeshivas Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin will remember his year with Rabbi Jungreis with ease. Giving and loving are the two traits that are oft repeated when describing that unusual time. Just recently, a talmid brought his grandson to the Rebbe for an upsherin, a sure example of the type of bond that is formed between rebbi and talmid. But there’s more. A young married man with a few children of his own revealed something fascinating. When he was a young boy in Yeshivas Chaim Berlin, he was known as a troublemaker. Rebbi upon rebbi would send him out of class to wander the halls. However, every boy knew “that if you get kicked out, you go to Rabbi Jungreis’ class.” The man attributed his success in staying frum and bringing up a family to that safe haven where everyone was unequivocally loved and accepted for who he is. Where others struggled in the area of chinuch, the Rebbe thrived and achieved. It is with this background that we begin to understand the miracle that occurred. The Rebbe heard the silent plea of that forlorn building standing erect on Main Street and decided that the time had come to reinstate it. The building that had served

closes at two in the morning. That’s just the inside. Outside, the minyanim are in full swing. The three hours of closure are very important for a Rebbe who never leaves his post during opening hours. He makes sure to use some of the time for sleeping. Don’t see the Rebbe? He must have gone to the bakery to buy more cake. Maybe he’s running low on lollipops for the children. There is no Nikolsburger gabbai. The Rebbe trusts nobody with this holy task. “Why don’t you lie down for a few minutes?” urges his son. “I rest in the car on the way to the bakery,” responds the Rebbe. “That’s when I get to sit down.”

with his precious talmidim. “Are you still interested?” they wanted to know. “I’m driving right up!” he exclaimed as he jumped into his car for the long trip. There were a lot of conditions and obstacles, but soon enough, they were in business. The Rebbe got to work ceremoniously placing a cardboard box in front of the shul proclaiming: “Minyan Mincha.” Passing cars rolled down their windows, unabashedly sharing their opinion: “vus machstu meshuga?” [Why are you making yourself crazy?] they wondered. “Nothing will come of it.” But the Rebbe pulled through, and the shul would open after one more necessary step. The Rebbe ran to a printing store and ordered a

You are a diamond in the eyes of this defending angel. its members faithfully for eighty years and lay dormant for ten was about to fulﬁll a role not unlike its original one. There were Jews, tens of thousands of them, making the trip up to the Catskills to vacation. Camps and bungalow colonies were bursting at the seams, and it seemed that there was a lot more freedom, and loneliness, for children at risk. They were there, roaming the streets; hollow, sad eyes, but who even noticed them? Did anyone even care? The Rebbe cared. The Rebbe’s heart was open for them. But here’s the secret. The Rebbe loves them because he loves everyone. Be he a fellow Rebbe, Litvishe Rosh Yeshiva, at-risk teen, or anyone in between, you are a diamond in the eyes of this defending angel. So he worked hard. He bargained, cajoled, and begged the skeptical board members to reopen. “There is a need, it’s time, and we’re ready,” he claimed, but there was a lot of red tape, ill feelings, and disbelief to work through. He got the call while sitting in Chaim Berlin

large laminated sign. With this, the shul was fully operational. The sign read: “EVERYONE IS WELCOME.” Only with this can the doors open. With the purchase of the building, the expenses started mounting. Electricity, water, refreshments, as the crowd quickly grew. To everyone’s disbelief, over 1,000 people entered through those doors in 2010, the ﬁrst year they were reopened. By 2011, there were 10,000. Today, there are thousands entering daily. Just count the used cups. “Why is the Rebbe’s gartel wet?” people wanted to know. Come on over at 5:30 in the morning, you’ll see the Rebbe, rag in hand, wiping down each outside table in the aftermath of a downpour. There’s a full day of learning and davening ahead. Shacharis starts at 6:05 a.m. When’s the next minyan? “As soon as there’s a minyan!” says the Rebbe. Come in at any given time, and you are likely to see six minyanim in full swing. See only ﬁve? That means you’re a tzenter! Don’t be fooled if you’re told that Nikolsburg

Soon enough, the building got too crowded. It was time to extend. “If there’s room in the heart, there’s room in the building,” he proclaimed after being offered money for renovations. Last year, the Rebbe acquiesced to building a deck behind the shul. Nobody was quite sure what changed. Then the world turned upside down. Will there be a shul this year? What about the people who don’t want to daven inside? The new deck held all the answers. Those concerned about Corona can stay outside. Those with antibodies come right in. While the Rebbe himself is always makpid to wear a mask, the open-door policy will remain regardless. The sign on the door urges all entering to follow suit; nobody is turned away. “We must listen to the government and make a Kiddush Hashem,” the Rebbe says. There is one thing that is never tolerated in Nikolsburg. One thing so appalling that even the Rebbe cannot bear. Machlokes is unwelcome here. Just look around the shul. It’s self-explanatory; only harmony. Take a look at the Rebbe’s shtender. There are lists of names. People come for tefillos and brachos from this humble man. After all, he is a Rebbe. Recently, a boy was lost in the forest. I Saved My Friend’s Life By Sivan Mashiach

ast Friday, I realized a dream, a dream that G-d would allow me to save someone’s life, but actually save the person’s life from start to finish. Not just be a part of the medical process that saved them but to actually save them with my own two hands. I have been a paramedic for the past 20 years, and I have participated in countless CPR cases, some of them have been successful, others were not. I have been a participant in saving someone’s life many times, part of a team that did its job and passed on a live patient who survived their ordeal with the help of doctors in hospitals as well as the first responders who arrived before or after me. But over my many years, I have never yet been the person who arrived first at a scene where a person was dead. I had yet to be the person who connected my defibrillator to them and become the messenger of G-d who was primarily responsible for bringing that person back from the dead. For years, I have dreamed of doing this, and every time an EMT or paramedic wrote a story in a WhatsApp group that they responded to an emergency, brought a patient’s pulse back, and that a few days later the person was released from the hospital without any neurological damage, I felt happy for them. But in my heart, I desired that one day the decree would fall that I would be able to be that person who wrote this story. Last Friday, that day came. I was in the middle of cooking for Shabbos. It was 5:21 p.m., and I received a phone call from my friend’s husband who lives in the building opposite me. I was on the other line, so his call went to my call waiting. He called me again. It went to call wait-

ing again. I switched calls and answered him but the line went dead. A second later, there was a knock at my door. At the door was their eldest son, a 12-year-old boy. In an incredibly calm and collected voice, he said: “My mother hit her head. She is bleeding and unconscious.” When I heard this, my husband and I ran to our car, grabbed my medical supplies, and rushed over to their house. When we got to the house, we heard screams, “Over here. Over here.” We ran into the room and found my friend, a 38-year-old woman, unconscious. She was not breath-

After 17 minutes of CPR and four shocks from my defibrillator, she finally listened to me and came back. Her vital signs began to look good again, and the ambulance crew took her to the hospital. I began ventilating my friend as her husband continued compressions. Then we switched. In minutes, the room filled with United Hatzalah volunteer first responders and ambulance teams. Together, we conducted a synchronized CPR that was for the ages. As we took over CPR from my friend, my husband, who is not a trained first responder, took the man aside and be-

Finally, on Saturday night, I spoke with the husband and heard that my friend’s situation was not looking good. We were asked to pray for her that she may have a full recovery. He said: “The doctors don’t know what caused her to collapse, and they don’t know how long her brain went

without oxygen. They can’t tell me if or when she will wake up. We need a miracle.” I spread the word around our community that the family was in need of our continued help and prayers. On Tuesday, we got word from the hospital that my friend woke up and was breathing on her own. She was able to recognize her husband and even spoke to her children. There are no words to describe the joyous feeling I had. When her husband told me the news, we both began to cry tears of joy and happiness, each of us on our respective sides of the phone call. There is no doubt that the compressions that I had taught her husband had helped and that our intervention and beginning CPR so quickly were what saved my friend’s life. I pray and thank the L-rd who gave me the chance to be one of his messengers and save the life of my friend. I want to thank United Hatzalah, the organization in which I volunteer, for giving me the training, equipment, and ability to save a life. I also want to thank my husband, who is also a volunteer with the organization and helped me realize this dream and every other dream that I have, as weird and wild as they are. To you, the readers, I say: go learn first aid because the day will come when it will be your turn to save a life. It may even be the life of someone whom you hold very dear to your hearts and you will need to know what to do.

The USS Missouri in World War II By Avi Heiligman

fter the surrender of Germany in May 1945, the attention of the Allied armies turned towards defeating Japan. American forces had pushed them back to the Japanese home islands with the capture of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. In August, B-29 Superfortress bombers dropped atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On August 14, President Truman announced to the American public that he had received a message from Japan in which they accepted the terms of unconditional surrender put forth by the Potsdam Declaration. A battleship was chosen for the official signing of the surrender agreement. For the most part, battleships were a thing of the past by the end of World War II but the USS Missouri (BB-63) served with distinction for many years after the war and was even present during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Battleships are large armored warships outfitted with large caliber guns and were built during the

18th and 19th centuries. Other ships, like aircraft carriers and smaller fast ships like destroyers and submarines, eventually made the battleship obsolete by the end of World War II but they did play a significant role in the war effort. The Japanese realized that they would need to neutralize Allied battleships in order to conquer territory, and in December 1941, they sank or damaged all of the American battleships at Pearl Harbor. When it came to building battleships, the British, Americans and Japanese commissioned more than any other country. The Iowa-class battleships were intended to track down large, fast Japanese warships such as the Kongo-class battle-cruisers that were very active during the war. Four Iowa-class battleships were ordered between 1939 and 1940. The Missouri was the last to be launched in January 1944 after the Iowa, New Jersey and Wisconsin were completed. She had nine 16” guns in her main battery, twenty 5” guns, and over a

hundred anti-aircraft guns on board. Two-thousand-seven-hundred sailors and marines served on the Missouri during World War II. Her first assignment was to serve as a screening vessel for aircraft carriers that were launching strikes against Japan. She provided fire support during the invasion of Iwo Jima in February 1945. During March, she went with aircraft carriers as they went to the Japanese mainland for another raid. It was during these raids that the Missouri shot down four enemy planes headed for the American group. Then, with other battleships, she bombarded Okinawa in preparation for the upcoming landings. On April 11, she was hit by a low-flying kamikaze suicide plane but suffered very little damage and no casualties. She then shot down a second suicide bomber headed for the task force. Six days later, the Missouri detected a Japanese submarine and relayed the coordinates to a hunter-killer light carrier group which in turn sank the I-56 submarine. In other action off of Okinawa, she shot down five enemy planes, fought off sixteen air raids on her task group, and destroyed many shore installations in assisting the troops on shore. For the rest of the war, she assisted in bombarding the Japanese home islands and was off the coast of Japan when the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. After the announcement that the Japanese were going to surrender, the Missouri steamed into Tokyo Bay on August 29. British Admiral Bruce Fraser was already on board

to bestow an honor on Admiral “Bull” Halsey and more high-ranking officers boarded for the surrender ceremony on September 2. Eleven Japanese officials were present for the surrender that was signed by the foreign minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and the Chief of the Army General Staff Yoshijiro Umezu. General Douglas MacArthur presided over the ceremony and began by stating, “It is my earnest hope –indeed the hope of all mankind – that from this solemn occasion a better world shall emerge out of the blood and carnage of the past, a world founded upon faith and understanding, a world dedicated to the dignity of man and the fulfillment of his most cherished wish for freedom, tolerance, and justice.” He then accepted the surrender document and signed, as he was the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers. Representatives from nine Allied countries signed the document. These included: American Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Chinese General Hsu Yung-chang for China, AdmiY ral Fraser for the United Kingdom, Russian Lieutenant General Kuzma Derevyanko for the Soviet Union, Australian General Sir Thomas Blamey for Australia, Canadian Colonel Lawrence Moore Cosgrave for Canada, French General Philippe Leclerc, Lieutenant Admiral C. E. L. Helfrich for the Netherlands, and Air Vice-Marshal Leonard M. Isitt for New Zealand. The surrender docurments were then taken to Washington, D.C., and presented to President Harry Truman before being put on

She picked up passengers on Guam and was back at Pearl Harbor on September 20. A month later, she was in New York for Navy Day celebrations, and President Truman boarded the now-famous battleship after she fired a 21gun salute. By December, she was in dry-dock for an overhaul. Over the next few years, she took part in many training exercises, goodwill tours, and celebrations. President Truman really liked the ship and kept it in the active fleet against the advice of his advisors. In January 1950, the Missouri was the only battleship left in the U.S. Navy’s active fleet when she ran aground off the coast of Virginia. Soon she was refloated, repaired, and was ready for action when the Korean War broke out later that year. Throughout the war, she provided support for the U.N. troops on shore and a few times

She fired her guns several more times and was shot at twice – both missed. One sailor on the Missouri was wounded during a friendly fire incident with a frigate. In 1992, the Missouri was decommissioned for the final time and is now a museum ship in Hawaii. She was the site where World War II formally ended. This question may sound weird, but I don’t know who else to ask. I am 21 years old. My friend is the same age as me. Recently, she has been complaining to me that she never gets any second dates from guys. My friend is a great person – she is kind, fun, and smart. She will make a great wife. I believe I know why she is not getting a second date: she has very bad teeth and the first time someone sees her and she smiles, they generally are taken aback. After a while, though, you don’t notice her terrible orthodontia. Here’s my question: I feel bad that she’s not getting second dates, and I know that it’s probably from that. How do I get the message to her to get her to do something about it? I really don’t want to tell her myself. It would really hurt her feelings. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

would like to turn the question around for a moment for our readership to think about. Do women ever turn guys down due to aesthetics and/ or bad teeth? Have you ever heard of a woman nixing her date due to poor dental hygiene? As a shadchan, I get this type of feedback; it happens all the time. Recently, a woman gave a “no” to a guy because the topic of their morning routines came up. The guy confided that he only brushes his teeth at night, because “I don’t eat anything in the meantime. Why brush in the morning? It’s a waste of time.” This was enough to make the woman run the other way. It happens to be this man has nice white, straight teeth but the thought of going out on another date with a man who does not brush in the morning was enough to end it. Many times, bad dental hygiene comes with side effects such as bad breath, which might be exacerbating the problem. As you have articulated, it is possible that bad dental hygiene can hinder the progress of relationships. This applies to both men and women. If your friend is perfectly happy despite her negative shidduch experience, I would say, do not mention it. If she is not bothered by it, why are you? However, if your friend confides in you, and is depressed about shidduchim, that is a different story. If it is negatively impacting her life, your case for saying something gets stronger. When she is asking you for advice, you can honestly tell her how incredible she is. Elaborate on your

opinion: there is nothing about her character which would hinder someone from giving her a second date. What can possibly be the problem? You can then, however, ease into the dental topic. You can gently suggest that she may want to see a dentist for poor orthodontics. Frame it in a way that conveys the message: “Who knows? Could it be just a physical thing that could easily be fixed?” This is a delicate topic that must be handled sensitively largely based on the closeness of your relationship. Once they sinned, the two of them suddenly became more aware of their surroundings and the physical world. They were no longer able to view life on a purely spiritual plane. While we would all love to be completely spiritual beings that simply is not our reality. Your friend is probably a wonderful girl but if her teeth are as noticeably damaged as you describe, people, by nature, will notice it. The question becomes: if and how do you tell her? Perhaps if you approach her kindly in a loving and non-judgmental way she will hear you. In life, it is not as much what we say as it is how we say it. You can tell her that you were thinking about her conundrum in not getting past a first date and

Deeper: Are you sure that the problem is orthodontic? It might be something else. Urge your friend to call the shadchanim that have set her up and request honest feedback about what is making the boys say “no” after a first date. A good shadchan will understand and give her the proper feedback. Deepest: Let’s think about this a bit more deeply. How is it possible that your friend is unaware of her dental problem? It just doesn’t make sense. Doesn’t she look in the mirror? Don’t you think her parents told her? Don’t you think her dentist recommended esthetic improvements, over the past decade of checkups? What I am most concerned about is a psychological defense mechanism called “avoidance” that could be playing a role in your friend’s behavior. Sometimes, folks purposely avoid fixing a smile, or eliminating a bad habit, or correcting similar problems that could clearly impact a person’s ability to attract a marriage partner or perform up to their potential at work.

A New Era in the Middle East? The UAE and Israel Normalize Relations BY TZVI LEV

ast Thursday, the world was astounded by the shocking news that Israel and the United Arab Emirates would sign an official peace agreement. As part of what The New York Times calls “a geopolitical earthquake,” Israel and the Gulf state will establish full diplomatic relations, including exchanging ambassadors and constructing embassies. The diplomatic breakthrough is significant because of how it changes existing paradigms. If, in the past, progress vis-a-vis the Arab world depended on agreeing to a Palestinian state, the UAE merely demanded that Israel “suspend” its plans to annex Judea and Samaria. In what Prime Minister Netanyahu has labeled “Peace for Peace” rather than the longtime

“Land for Peace” doctrine, other nations such as Sudan, Bahrain, Oman, and Morocco are said to be readying to announce their own relations with the Jewish State. This has the opportunity to completely revamp Israel’s strategic position in the Middle East. Since its founding in 1948, the Arab world has refused to recognize its existence. Israel is widely reviled across the Islamic world, with 26 Muslim nations refusing to recognize the country’s right to exist. In the Middle East, only Egypt and Jordan have formal peace treaties with the Jewish State, although the ties between Jerusalem and its aforementioned former adversaries are commonly seen as a “cold peace” at best.” Yet now, Israelis have awakened to a new world where they are direct

ast week’s historic breakthrough gives the UAE Jewish community a chance to finally emerge from the shadows. For over two decades, more than 1,500 Jews from around the world have lived comfortably in the Arab country. While the sheikdom refrained from recognizing the Jewish state until last week, it enabled the flourishing community to practice its religion undisturbed. As opposed to countries in the Middle East such as Yemen and Egypt, the UAE’s Jewish community congregation does not have an illustrious history dating back thousands of years. Members of the community are mostly foreign businessmen, with the majority of them hailing from Israel or the United States. Currently, there are three different Jewish houses of worship in the United Arab Emirates: a Chabad synagogue, a Modern Orthodox-oriented congregation, and an “egalitarian” one. Thousands of Jews pass through the country every year for business. The first kosher catering service in the Persian Gulf recently opened for business. A Jewish school was also recently founded and already has 40 students. The Jewish community puts extreme importance on discretion. Public opinion in the country is mostly pro-Palestinian, and there are many locals who view the warming relations with Israel as a betrayal. As such, Jewish congregants make sure to keep a low profile, usually refraining from announcing their presence and do not openly sport Jewish articles of clothing in public. “The Jewish community of the Emirates, as it’s known, meets in an unmarked home in a residential location in Dubai so as to attract little attention in this predominantly Muslim country,” wrote Religion News Service in 2018 in an article about one of the three synagogues. “It draws about 200 Jews, many of them business people from all over the world who have flocked to the UAE to take part in its growing economic power as it shifts from a reliance on oil and trade to technology and artificial intelligence.” The oldest Jewish community in the Emirates is led by Ross Kriel, a business development executive residing in the Emirates. Founded 12 years ago, the congregation holds prayers in a nondescript home near the famous Burj Al-Arab hotel in Dubai. Kriel has repeatedly reiterated that, althoughy needing to keep a low profile, his flock has never experienced any cases of anti-Semitism. “There are no guards at the entrance to the house. We have community members from Antwerp, Paris, and Geneva who feel safer here than in Europe,” Kriel said. “The only anti-Semitism I’ve experienced was from Europeans. There is a social contract of mutual respect here between all parts of the real society.” Kriel added that he never thought that he would witness the Jewish State and his adopted country establishing full diplomatic ties. “Only a week ago, the things happening today were still a dream, like seeing the Israelis and Emirati flags flying side by side on the front pages of local newspapers,” Kriel said. In November, his oldest son will turn 13, granting

“We have conducted quiet diplomacy and sent very public signals to help shift the dynamics and promote the possible,” he went on. “With the region’s two most capable militaries, common concerns about terrorism and aggression, and a deep and long relationship with the United States, the UAE and Israel could form closer and more effective security cooperation,” he wrote two months ago. “As the two most advanced and diversified economies in the region, expanded business and financial ties could accelerate growth and stability across the Middle East.” He noted the existence and religious freedom of a Jewish community in Dubai and the fact that Israel was invited to participate in the 2020 World Expo, planned to take place in the city this summer, but was postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. “These are the carrots – the incentives, the upsides – for Israel. Greater security. Direct links. Expanded markets. Growing acceptance. This is what normal could be,” he wrote. In conclusion, al-Otaiba noted that much of the Arab world “would like to believe Israel is an opportunity, not an enemy. We face too many common dangers and see the great potential of warmer ties.”

n a foreshadowing of things to come, on June 12, 2020, UAE Minister of State Yousef Al-Otaiba issued an unprecedented op-ed in the Hebrew Yedioth Ahronoth daily paper. In it, the UAE’s ambassador to the U.S. acknowledged that Israel and much of the Arab world have grown closer in recent years. He warned, though, that Israeli plans for annexation are a hinderance to talks of normalizing ties with other nations. Al-Otaiba was one of the three Arab ambassadors to attend the White House ceremony in January during which U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled his peace plan for the Middle East. The UAE has long “promoted engagement and conflict reduction, helped to create incentives-carrots rather than sticks – and focused attention on the collective benefits for all parties,” he wrote. For instance, Abu Dhabi has listed Hezbollah a terrorist organization and has condemned Hamas.

With the Palestinians’ veto now a thing of the past, business ties with the oil-rich Gulf states will flourish; Israelis may soon find themselves getting on the short three-hour flight in order to vacation among the towering skyscrapers of Dubai. “This historic change will also advance peace with the Arab world and, in the end, peace, true peace, monitored, secure, with the Palestinians as well,” Netanyahu exulted. “It is different from those that preceded it in that it is based on two principles: ‘peace for peace,’ and ‘peace through strength,’” Netanyahu added. “Under this doctrine, Israel is not required to withdraw from any territory and together the two countries openly reap the fruits of a full peace: investments, trade, tourism, health, agriculture, environmental protection, and in many other fields, including defense, of course,” he said.

Originally from the U.S., Duchman moved to Dubai a few years ago and set up a hub of Judaism that offers courses in religious observance, kosher food, and prayer services. Recently, Duchman’s Jewish Community of the UAE Facebook page sparked interest throughout the Gulf by releasing a video showing his prayer quorum reciting a blessing for the welfare of UAE King Zayed Bin Khalifa. The clip featured a professional cantor and musical accompaniment. In the video, the exquisite synagogue is showcased and a slew of UAE royals are seen in the sanctuary along with a large portrait of the late Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, zt”l. The video racked up more than half a million hits in under a month after UAE Ambassador to London Mansoor Abulhoul posted it on his personal Twitter page. “The blessing, sung in Hebrew, is set to footage of the UAE’s major landmarks, artwork of UAE leaders, and men in the traditional black and white Jewish prayer shawl known as the tallit,” reported Saudi Arabia’s Al Arabiya television station. After the news of the breakthrough agreement between Israel and the UAE became public, Rabbi Duchman told the Israeli media that the Jews have nothing to fear from the Arab State. “We built a Jewish community – we have Torah study, kashrut, a community and strong support from the government. I’m not surprised that our leaders are so special. I believed this would happen,” said the rabbi. “The United Arab Emirates is a leader in all that is good for humanity. I believe that, as a result of the peace agreement, more Jews will join our community. We are prepared; the infrastructure is ready.”

In January 2019, Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed declared that the calendar year would be named the “Year of Tolerance.” In May, New York University chaplain Rabbi Yehuda Sarna was named the community’s first chief rabbi. “What we see is the first emergence of the first new Jewish community emerging in the Arab world for centuries,” Rabbi Sarna said upon taking the position. This past September, the UAE announced that it would build the country’s first-ever official synagogue. The house of worship will be constructed as part of a multifaith center known as the Abrahamic Family House that is slated to be finished in 2022. The UAE’s embrace of the Jewish community picked up pace recently as the surreptitious talks to establish diplomatic relations between Dubai and Jerusalem heated up. Earlier this month, the UAE arranged for a family of Yemenite Jews to be reunited after not seeing each other for 15 years. Pictures of the reunion in Abu Dhabi showed a large charedi family surrounded by a collection of children and an elderly woman in a wheelchair. A few days later, Rabbi Yehuda Sarna led a virtual Kabalat Shabbat over Zoom with Jewish communities from around the world. The event was attended by a slew of Jewish dignitaries from all over the world, including American Jewish Committee head David Harris and Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, president of President of the Conference of European Rabbis (CER). “I believe that what we are observing is the unfolding of His Highness’ vision of tolerance, synergy, and the fusion of past and future,” said Rabbi Sarna. “What excites me most about the agreement is the potential to collaborate on education and culture.” Solly Wolf, a prominent member of Dubai’s Jewish community, told Ynet that the change in attitude from the ruling family has been especially apparent of late. “A few months ago, some might have had an issue if you were seen walking inside a mall with a yarmulke on your head,” Wolf said. “Today, there is no issue with that whatsoever. You see ultra-Orthodox Jews walking around the street with a tzizit, and no one says a thing. “We were surprised by the timing, but we knew it was coming,” added Wolf. “We have been feeling more free for a while now, but even more so now. We kept a low profile in the past, but over the past year, the authorities have given us permission to open synagogues.”

“You Are So Paranoid!” By Rabbi Azriel Hauptman

Paranoia is one of those words that has become part of our everyday speech but is often misused. People who suffer from phobias or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are often accusingly told, “You are so paranoid!” In reality, those who suffer anxiety disorders such as OCD are technically not paranoid. The difference between anxiety and paranoia is a critical one that must be understood in order to achieve a better understanding of some of the challenges

that people face when suffering from various mental health disorders. Before we get ahead of ourselves, let us define paranoia. Paranoia is a condition that is characterized by systemized delusions of persecution, conspiracy and perceived threat against the person. Paranoia is often accompanied with false accusations and a general distrust of others. People with paranoia often view an accidental incident as intentional and generally feel that everyone is out to

get them. A very important aspect of paranoia is that it is not simply irrational, it is also delusional. This means to say that someone who has paranoia has no doubts at all as to the truth of their delusional thoughts. Now we understand the stark difference between paranoia and anxiety, as anxiety disorders are due to irrational fears that are usually understood by the sufferer to be excessive. Sufferers of anxiety disorders generally wish that they would not be gripped with these debilitating fears. This is not the case at all with paranoia. With paranoia, the delusion is so complete that the paranoid person is convinced that their fears are true. Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD) is one of the diagnoses that might be given to someone who has paranoia and a pervasive, long-standing suspiciousness and generalized mistrust of others. One cannot receive the diagnosis of PPD if the paranoia happens during psychotic episodes such as might occur with someone who has schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depressive disorders with psychotic features. Additionally, one cannot receive a diagnosis of PPD if the paranoia is a normal reaction to the person’s specific life circumstance. For example, recent immigrants who are not familiar with their new land can have a difficult time being trusting of the native residents. Sometimes paranoia and other changes in personality can be the result of a medical condition such as substance use or abuse and Alzheimer’s Disease. Even hearing loss can lead to paranoia as you cannot hear what others are saying about you. These individuals also do not qualify for the diagnosis of PPD.

PPD does externally look very similar to certain aspects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) who also may suffer from hypervigilance of threats. When one suffers a traumatic event, it can lead him to view the world as a dangerous and unsafe place. They may isolate themselves and take extreme safety precautions. However, despite the similarities to PPD, there are clear differences between PPD and PTSD, as the hypervigilance that is associated with PTSD was absent before the traumatic event and is therefore not considered part of one’s personality but a condition brought on by the trauma. As with virtually all mental health symptoms, paranoia is on a spectrum and we all have at least a little bit of paranoia. Paranoia becomes a problem that requires intervention when it has a significant negative impact on the person’s ability to function. Unfortunately, one of the main obstacles to treatment is that people with clinical levels of paranoia are convinced that nothing is wrong with them and that everyone else is the problem. If someone you know seems to be suffering from paranoia, it might be worthwhile to seek intervention for yourself from a mental health professional in order to receive help in navigating this difficult landscape. What You Will Need:

6 eggs 1 ½ cups sugar 1 ½ cups oil ¾ cup cocoa ¾ cup potato starch ½ tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. vanilla

Preparation: 1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a large mixing bowl, mix all ingredients until well blended. 3. Line a cupcake pan with cupcake liners. Spoon a scant ¼ cup of the batter into each cupcake liner. 4. Bake about 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. 5. To decorate, use homemade or Pillsbury frosting and fill into pastry bag fitted with a #21 decorating tip. Decorate tops by starting along the outer edge of the cupcake and using a circular spiral motion, ending up in the center of the cupcake. Scatter colored sprinkles (or whatever you like) on the top. Enjoy!!

he can still place a bet on the game. But the IRS has just taken steps to make that pleasure a little harder for those enjoying the newest way to bet on the action. Today’s sports books feature slick websites, mobile apps, and electronic cash transfers. But underneath that glitz, they work pretty much just like the Mob, except without the pinkie rings. You make your bet, plus a 10% “vigorish,” to win even money. You give the points, or take the over, just like you would with Vinnie down at the corner bar. Online sports books

pay an excise tax of 0.25% of the total amount wagered if the bets are legal in the state where they’re accepted, and 2.0% if they’re not. (Vinnie doesn’t pay the tax, but he won’t pass along the savings, either.) Fantasy sports contests, by contrast, don’t take bets on teams. You pay an entry fee to create your own roster by cherry-picking players from across the league, then bet on their individual performances. What Red Sox fan wouldn’t love betting on Mitch Moreland’s bat without worrying about the team’s minor-league pitching? It’s the sports-betting equivalent of trading derivatives on Wall Street. (Just don’t forget that if it was derivatives, in the form of mortgage-backed bonds, that cratered the global economy in 20072008.)

Last month, the IRS General Counsel issued an opinion holding that daily fantasy sports (DFS) operators like FanDuel and DraftKings should pay that same excise tax on those entry fees. Now, a quarter of a percent may not sound like much of a lift. But remember, it applies to the whole wager. Most DFS operators structure their prize pools to pay out around 85% to winners. Then they pay their own expenses out of the remaining 15% rake. So, while twenty-five cents out of a $100 bet isn’t much — two bits out of a fifteen-buck rake adds up fast! Last month’s memo doesn’t mean

Ingredients

Preparation

CHILI b 2 chorizo sausages, diced b 1 Spanish onion, diced b 1 green bell pepper, diced b 1 red bell pepper, diced b 4 cloves garlic, minced b 2 pounds ground beef b 3 (15-ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained b 1 ½ jars crushed tomatoes b 1 ½ tablespoons chili powder b 1 tablespoon ground cumin b 1 ½ teaspoons dried oregano b ½ teaspoon cinnamon b ¼ cup dark brown sugar b Salt, to taste b Juice of 1 lime b ½ bar 80% cocoa bittersweet chocolate

CHILI 1. Heat a large nonstick pot over medium-high heat. Sauté the chorizo until it renders some of its fat and gets slightly crispy.

2. Remove chorizo from the pot (leave the fat for sautéing the vegetables). Add chopped onion, bell peppers and garlic and sauté until tender. 3. Remove from the pot. Add ground beef and cook, breaking up the meat until it is browned. 4.

Drain the fat from the meat and add chorizo and vegetables back to the pot. Add beans and tomatoes and mix well. Add remaining ingredients, except for the chocolate, and bring to a boil.

TOSTONES 1. Slice the plantains on the diagonal, about ½ to ¾-inch thick. 2. Shallow fry the plantains in oil on both sides until lightly golden brown. 3. While the plantains are still warm, place between a sheet of parchment paper and press down ﬁrmly with a plate to ﬂatten. 4.

Return the ﬂattened plantains to the oil and fry a second time until crisp and golden. Sprinkle with salt and a squeeze of lime (optional) before serving.

5. Serve with chili.

5. Reduce heat, and simmer, covered, for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. 6. Add chocolate and simmer for an additional 30 minutes to one hour, until the chili has thickened and the ﬂavors have melded.
