ANCIENT MYTHOLOGY MODERN MYTH The Trend Exploring past myths and fairytales translate to a dark romance in Fashion and Design. ‘The age of narcissm’ has preveiled the past few years and we are now straying from this ideal and focusing on an absense of the human form and annonymity while rediscovering ourselves through childhood fairytales and magic. A dark romance that mixes both feminity and mysticism will prevail in the AW we will yearn for a simpler time where our fairytales and dreams collide. Nostalgia for the baroque period will be evident in golden motif and decoration.
”I want to empower women. I want people to be afraid of the women I dress.” ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

“The Modern Myth trend takes influence from the interwoven geometric shapes found in cultural tribal art, quilting and weaving. In Astrology and Mythology Gold represents the Sun, it was even believed that gold came from the sun’s rays... My idea behind the colour sectioning pattern was to combine these two elements, based on the symbolic shape of the sun, the pivoting geometric shaped sections mimic tribal inspired patterns which splay out across the hair in tones of gold just like the rays of the sun, perfect for our mythical goddess.” SARAH COTTON

MAKE-UP The make-up was designed to give a goddess like flawless complexion, gilding the face with gold leaf and highlighting with golden oppulence to give a mystifying cosmic look. Lips were deep blood colour to give the balance of dark and light that is so prevelant in the Modern Myth trend..
STYLING The couture dress was designed and hand made by our in-house fashion stylist Hollie. The dress started as a ÂŁ9 body from Primark and transformed using pheasant and rooster feathers, gems, gold leaf and finished with a metallic gold glaze for our entry shot. For the live finals the body was transformed into an elegant floor length dress with the addition of a secondhand bridal skirt hand embellished with rooster feathers. Once the dress was complete, it was given a gilded gold ombre finish leaving beautiful green/black feathers tipping the edge of the dress.
COUTURE
THE RESULT The Hair
Our ‘Mythical Goddess’ wears her hairstyle like a headdress, it is a statement of her power and status. The gold symbolises divine radiance, ultimate wisdom and truth. The pivotal sectioning pattern represents the sun casting it’s golden rays and the geometric lines came from the ancient tribal artistry present in the modern myth trend. We used a combination of Rose gold, Honey gold & Antique gold with accents of a golden blush. We showcased this with a haircut/style focusing on Perfection, Precision & Strength.
The Dress
Gold, feathers and embellishment were the key to creating a romantic fairytale garment that moves dramatically with every step. This couture piece was designed and hand made especially for this look. We used gold leaf to gild the design and give the feel of richness and regal opulance. We finshed the dress with an ombré gold effect, keeping the ‘blackbird’ darkness along the bottom of the trim to represent the contrast of dark to light within our fairytale theme.
The Overall Look
Capturing the true meaning of the ‘Modern Myth’ trend, our aim was to create a mesmerising mythical creature who was beautiful and magical. We took inspiration from designers such as Alexander Mcqueen and Valentino.
