SALON NEWS

HELLO BABIES

We love to shout about the achievements of our team, but this year the news of the safe arrival of both Coral (to Sarah & Jon) and Frankie (to Katie and hubby, Ryan) have outshone the rest. The Bang gang grew more excited as the months went on to meet the new arrivals and welcome them to the world. Now they are here, we wanted to show them off in style by giving them their very own photo-shoot and, of course, we couldn’t do this without styling them up in a true Bang fashion. I’m sure you will all agree they make an adorable addition to the team.

Everyone at Bang is on their own career path. This year, five members of our team have moved up through the ranks. Craig and Matt graduated to the position of 'Top Stylist' by directing and producing their own individual photographic collections. Craig's 'Ethereality' (below left) was a stunning collection of hairstyles on models styled up as angelic, other worldly beings. Matt went for an urban feel with his 'New Kids on the Bang Block' collection (right) shot on location in Rowntrees Park,York. Abigail has now also recently graduated as a full stylist by presenting a catwalk showcase of Circus inspired styles and Tino has now qualified as a Colourist with a Greek God inspired showcase at 1331 bar. Read about Adele's progress over the next couple of pages. You can view all the photos from our team's individual collections and showcases of their passion and creativity on our website and facebook page. Follow us and sign up to our e-newsletter via the website to stay tuned to their progress.

RISING TO THE TOP

POSITIVE I.D. Craig has now completed his second season as a L'Oréal Professionnel I.D. Artist, achieving this highly prestigious status after competing against thousands of potential candidates to make the grade as one of the top 20 young talents in the UK. Over the last year, he has received an incredible amount of education from some of the biggest names in the industry, the highlight being an 'Up Close & Personal' session with the legendary Trevor Sorbie MBE. Craig has been also been trained by L'Oréal in stage presentation skills and has given 4 dynamic performances over the past 2 seasons in front of 200+ capacity crowds of hairdresing professionals. We're so proud of our boy's achievements and are excited to see what else is in store for him.

T E C H N I C A L As part of her role as Technical Director of Bang, Adele has undertaken the Colour Specialist Degree course by L'Oréal Professionnel. Colour Specialist sets the standard for colourists that really take colouring hair to perfection seriously. The highly intensive course teaches how to analyse the science and chemistry of hair, the effect of natural colour pigments and how to compensate for them to create the perfect look for every individual. Adele graduated with a 96% credit, which places her (and Bang) in the TOP 1% of colour technicians in the industry. Adel regularly passes on this knowledge through in-house staff training, ensuring you get the best and most gentle results possible for your hair.

A year later, at the age of 21, she won the National Prize and became a founder member of the L'Oréal Colour Academy, working and training alongside some of the world's greatest colour technicians.

Kimonos Stylist Pick–

Kimonos are more elaborate than ever this season and feature tassle details and longer lengths. Team with a simplistic outfit, such as Ellie’s choice of all black, to score a perfect balance.Height is also needed, especially if your kimono has tassles, so grab a pair of this season’s heeled Chelsea boots to complete the look.

Casual tailoring Stylist Pick–

Casual tailoring is a key trend most seasons for menswear. It’s all about giving tailored pieces a modern twist, such as Liam’s oversized shirt and camo print blazer look. HAIR STORIES

Words Tino Amour

Occum volum seditem hit quatem ad qui tem ipit volupta tisque voluptia velecto reptatur, que et, ut aliquamus alis dignatatem iuntur aliquamus seriam ius que landis rem etur sandaessi quias quae

The occupation of hairdressing can be dated back to over 3000 years ago. The ancient Greek writer Homer (the writer of the Iliad of Troy) would sometimes mention it in his stories and writings. Styling and maintaining good condition of hair was taken very seriously by the Spartan warriors who were the most fierce and ferocious soldiers of their time but they still believed it was important to look after their hair which they did by brushing and oiling before battle. It was high status in Ancient Africa to be a hairdresser as some cultures believed that spirits lived in a person’s hair. Only the most trustworthy people would be allowed to be Hairdressers. Ancient Egyptian Hairdressers would pass down their lotions and scissors in

special gold cases to their chosen apprentice when they died. When Rome conquered Egypt they brought back their techniques and even the Egyptian hairdressers themselves, to be slaves and style the tresses of the Roman aristocracy. With the fall of the Roman Empire in the late 5th century, the western world was plunged into the dark ages. There is very little known about hairdressing until faashions sarted to become more prominent in the 14-1600s, as the Renaissance movement swept across Europe. During this time in France, hairdressing was considered a profession and it was the first time the term “Hairdresser” was given to describe the occupation. Hair became a huge part of women and men’s fashion, starting with the impressive

tall wigs that we have have come to associate with aristocracy of the Renaissance period. At first, it was men that began styling women’s hair and the first salon was founded by a famous male hairdresser, called Champagne. He was born in the south of France and moved to Paris where he opened his own salon, styling the hair of wealthy Parisien women. In the 18th century a new name surfaced for a style popular with French and English women. - “The Tower” created by the Hairdresser - Madame Martin. The style consisted of incredibly tall hair that would even need small wooden beams to maintain the structure, dressed with ribbons and ornaments and sometimes fruit to show their wealth.

The first training book was published in the late 18th century - “Art de la Coiffure des Dames” by Hairdresser Legros de Rumigny, which went on to sell many copies. Legros de Rumigny became very famous, after which he then opened the first Hairdressing academy. Not only did he gain the respect of the people he also gained the respect of the emerging profession of Hairdressing. At the end of the 18th century there was over a 1000 hairdressers in Paris alone. In the 1800s, hair salons and hairdressers each offered their own looks and styles to the region they were in. As many were individual salons. The most famous of these looks at the time and is still seen today, is the Marcel wave created by Marcel Grateau. This technique was created by a hot iron. It required skill, as the irons back then are nothing like todays ghd's. It wasn’t till the mid-1800s, that the first chain of salons was created - “The Harper Method” by Martha Matilda Harper. The 20th century gave way to a completely new way of hairdressing, with the invention of the first colour. Invented by Eugene Schuller whilst working in his shed in 1901. His writings were later bought and developed by the founders of the house of Parisian hairdressing L’Oréal.

Throughout the 20th century and to the present day, the world of professional hairdressing excelled, with new tools and equipment being introduced. Hairdryers, perm lotion, new colours and pre lighteners, which are all important tools that have shaped modern hair styling. Throughout history, styles will come and go, some will become instant classics and stand the test of time. Some would rather be forgotten. There are no limits to the opportunities and styles that the profession of Hairdressing creates.

Bang Hair, York 2013 Turn the page to see how our junior team are bringing iconic styles from the last century right up to date with the all-new 'Bang BlowDry Menu'.

Twiggy 1966 near London Vidal's made me look like a boy... This craze better take off! FML!!!

Marie Antoinette 1780 near Versailles OMG! Totes loves my stylist #mwah!

Hair has become an extension of our personality, from the ancients who first started grooming their hair, styling themselves on their Gods to add social status and power, to the renaissance European aristocracy competing with each other for the most impressive, elaborate hair style. Hair to most people has become as important, if not more important, than fashionable clothing. This is because our hair is our permanent accessory, we can't take it off and we wear it every day. Just as well that hairdressing and hair care is accessible to the masses, with many salons in every village, town and city... How times have changed.

-A NEW ERA

A few years ago, we launched the 'bang blow dry menu' - a selection of 'BLOW UP' or 'BLOW OUT' styles that could be created in 40-60 minutes by a junior member of the bang team, the perfect cost-effective fix for that prom, party or

special occasion. The menu proved popular, however, the snag was that a lot of the icons that we named the styles after, ie. 'The Goldfrapp', 'The Duffy', 'The Stefani' and more tragically - The Winehouse' became a little dated.

70's : The Bridget For Big and Bouncy hair, a 1970’s inspired Bridget Bardot is the style for you

>

60's : The Bonnie For the perfect glamorous evening look, treat yourself to a Bonnie

>

>

90's : The Crystal Sweet but sexy, this ballerina-esq hair up is perfect for any occasion 00's : The Carly For a simplistic glossy finish, why not indulge and ask your stylist to give you a Carly

With this in mind, our newly qualified stylist, Abi Harland, with some help from our resident technician, Tino Amour decided to take matters into her own enterprising hands and has redesigned a brand new menu of creative 'do's.

The bang blow dry menu is available every day with a member of the junior team, priced at £24 per style or £33 with any L'Oréal Professionnel styling product to take "It's still the Bang Blow Dry home. Menu, just all grown up!" Abi and Tino have chosen the theme of 'DECADES', taking influence from days gone by and bringing some classic styles and techniques right up to date.

50's : The Nancy For structured curls, the 1950’s inspired faux Bob is the ideal way to create a short and sexy look.

>

40's : The Marilyn Be a Hollywood star for the day and ask for the ultimate classic 1940’s wave.

>

>

10's : The Cassie Simple and chic, the Cassie is perfect for a day to night look. Ask your stylist for their top tip to add a little extra 00's : The Abigail For an effortless big curl finish, ask for the Abigail to brighten up your day

the drum JAMES BLAKE OVERGROWN

HOT NATURED DIFFERENT SIDES OF THE SUN

Now that this clever young man has just (well deservedly) scooped the Mercury Music Prize for 'Overgrown', sales are about to go sky high. But even without the accolade, this album, with it's Brian Eno (producer) influenced cosmic undercurrent behind a rich, voluptous tapestry of intelligent sounds and the haunting voice of Mr. Blake himself, is a truly great and inspirational album!

DSOTS is the debut album from the newly formed 'House Music Supergroup' of producers - Jamie Jones, Luca C and Lee Foss, and vocalist Ali Love. With mixed reviews from critics, this album of steady, if a little complacent, electronica is hardly groundbreaking. Yet, with solid production and a certain 'blissed out charm', it provides a soul satisfying selection of sunshine grooves.

ROXY MUSIC ROXY MUSIC

FRANK OCEAN CHANNEL ORANGE

Roxy Music's eponymous debut, released in 1972, is filled with the devishly seductive vocals of Bryan Ferry and the futuristic and often haunting 'noises' of Brian Eno. From the opening post modernist pastiche that is 'Re-make Re-model' to the iconic soundtrack of 'IfThere Is Something'.This album should be embraced in the heart of the music library of anyone of any age, who consider themselves to be a fan of great music.

Possibly Papa Bang's album of choice at the moment. Frank Ocean is reinventing the world of R'n'B. It's less about twee lyrics and egotistical dance moves and more of a journey through emotional clarity, intelligent instrumentation and daringly different lyrical content. Basically, Frank Ocean offers something unique and beautiful to this otherwise mundane genre. Bravo!
