Violence and mass arrests as former Pakistan PM charged with corruption
Post Desk : Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan has pleaded not guilty to corruption charges a day after his arrest sparked nationwide protests.
Eight people have died nationwide in the protests and about 1,000 have been arrested, police say.
The army is being deployed in some areas, and has issued a stern warning after crowds attacked its properties.
Mr Khan's arrest dramatically escalated tensions between Mr Khan and the military at a time of economic crisis.
Conviction would disqualify the former cricket starprime minister from 2018 to 2022 - from standing for office, possibly for life.
Elections are due later this year.
Dramatic footage showed dozens of security officers forcibly removing the 70year-old from court on Tuesday, then bundling him into a police vehicle.
There is tight security at the police guesthouse where he is being detained, which is also serving as a courtroom.
On Wednesday Mr Khan was indicted on charges that he unlawfully sold state gifts during his premiership, in a case brought by the Election Commission.
He denies the allegations and says he fulfilled all legal requirements.
It was the first of dozens of cases against him in which he has been formally charged. For months he had avoided arrest, with his supporters at times fighting pitched battles with police to keep him out of custody.
Tuesday's arrest was based on a new warrant for a separate corruption case, connected to the alleged transfer of land for Al-Qadir University, near Islamabad. The judge remanded Mr Khan in custody for eight days in this case.
One of his lawyers, Sher Afzal Marwat, said his client was faring well and relayed a
message to supporters not to give up: "You have to stand your ground for Rule of Law," Mr Khan said.
His Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party said it would challenge the legality of his arrest in court.
The action by Pakistan's anticorruption body has led to violent protests across the country.
The government has called the army in to maintain order in several regions of the country, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Balochistan, and Islamabad. In a televised address to the nation, Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, warned that violent protests would not be tolerated.
"The perpetrators who take the law into their own hands will be dealt with with an iron hand," he said.
Extraordinary scenes on Tuesday evening showed Mr Khan's supporters ransacking the corps commander's residence in Lahore, smashing chandeliers and making away with peacocksamong other things - which they said were bought with "citizen's money".
Pakistan's army described 9 May as a "dark day" and
warned protesters of an "extreme reaction" if properties of the state were attacked again.
Why was Khan arrested?
Pakistan's government says he was taken into a custody for not co-operating with authorities in an ongoing corruption investigation.
The case alleges that Mr Khan, while he was the PM, received land as a bribe in exchange for political favours. It revolves around an investigation conducted by Britain's National Crime Agency into "laundered" money by Pakistan's biggest property tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain.
Mr Hussain allegedly gave the land to the Al-Qadir Trust, which was set up by Mr Khan's third wife, Bushra Bibi. Mr Khan, who denied the charges, said that the land had been donated for charitable purposes.
Mr Hussain denied laundering money. But his position on the question of land for favours is not known - he appeared before Pakistan's National Accountability Bureau investigators earlier this year and recorded a statement in the Al-Qadir Trust case, but it
has not been made public or reported in the media.
Since his arrest Mr Khan has been indicted in another graft case. This one alleges he did not disclose money he earned by selling gifts he had received on foreign visits as PM. A hearing in this case saw charges pressed for the first time against Mr Khan on Wednesday and he pleaded not guilty.
Analysts believe that now that he is in custody, courts might indict him in a series of cases - a fate he has
repeatedly avoided by either missing the appointment, or appearing in higher courts, heavily guarded, only to apply for protective bail. He was, in fact, in court on Tuesday to seek protective bail against arrest when he was finally whisked off into custody.
Mr Khan himself seemed to have been prepared for it. After he was detained, he released a video that had been recorded earlier, saying it was likely he would be arrested by the time his
supporters saw the message. But it's possible neither he nor his lawyers expected him to be arrested on the court premises because Mr Khan has appeared in court for bail before. But this time the executors of the warrant were not police, but a paramilitary force, the Punjab Rangers. Leaders and supporters of Mr Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf (PTI) party argue this is proof of the army's involvement. They say the arrest has little to do with corruption charges and everything to do with Mr Khan's ongoing public battle with the army. He has accused the army and the spy agency, the Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI), of conspiring to assassinate him - he survived a shooting last year.
The country's generals, who have seized power three times since Pakistan's independence in 1947, have long played a prominent role in politics. Mr Khan too was believed to have their support as he rose to power. But the privilege of his birth, his fame born of cricketing glory, and his charisma drove his popularity far higher than anything Pakistan has seen in recent years.
King and Queen say thanks

The royal couple were "profoundly grateful" to all who helped to make it "such a glorious occasion" and the "very many" who turned out to show their support, the palace said. Meanwhile, the Prince and Princess of Wales made a surprise trip to Windsor.

Landowner fined for making unauthorised changes to listed building
A landowner who carried out unauthorised works to a listed building has been fined £20,000 after failing to comply with an enforcement notice.
The Council’s Planning Compliance Team investigated the alterations at 103 Bow Road which included the construction of a rear extension and installation of a uPVC window without Listed Building Consent.
The building is a residential three-storey Grade II Listed Building located in the east of the borough, within the Bow West Ward. The unauthorised extension was being used for poor quality housing in addition to having heritage concerns.
A Listed Building Enforcement Notice was served by the Council requiring the removal of the extension and replacement of the window with a traditional timber sash window.
Landowner Samuel Atanda Jenyo did not comply with this notice and consequently attended the Thames Magistrates’ Court on 15 November 2022 where they pleaded guilty. Sentencing took place on 18 January 2023 at Snaresbrook Crown Court and the landowner was fined for an offence of failing to comply with the requirements of a Listed Building Enforcement Notice.
Councillor Kabir Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Inclusive Development and Housebuilding, said: “Listed buildings have their character and appearance protected by a special type of planning permission called listed building consent.
“It is a criminal offence to make an unauthorised alteration affecting the
special character of a listed building without consent and the council has enforcement powers to reverse unauthorised alterations.”
Statutory listed buildings are designated by the government's Department of Culture, Media and Sport and are classified into three grades, I, II* and II.
Cllr Ahmed continued: “In this case, the building in question forms part of a row of listed buildings which were all listed for their group value in 1973. Listed buildings hold immense historic and architectual value and we must protect them.
“Prosecution is always a last resort and doesn’t happen very often. In fact, most of the reported breaches of planning control are resolved informally, through negotiation or approval of retrospective applications and without needing to serve a notice.
“However, this case sends a clear message to all landowners, unauthorised works to Listed Buildings will not be tolerated. The council has a statutory duty to manage the borough’s diverse heritage assets and will do so even if the consequence is a steep fine.”
There are there are approximately 2,000 listed buildings in Tower Hamlets.
If you want to alter a listed building, either internally or externally, you need to make an application for listed building consent. You can find more details on how to do so at the Council’s website:

Ramadan Enlightenment For King Charles: Fostering a Stronger More Understanding Faith Community
Ramadan. By learning these valuable lessons on empathy, unity, and solidarity, King Charles can use this knowledge to create a more inclusive and harmonious society for all faith communities.
By Shofi Ahmed
Best things come to those who wait, and King Charles can certainly be considered an archetypal example of this well-known saying. After waiting a staggering seventy years, he was finally crowned as the king of the UK in a spectacular ceremony on May 6, 2023. Throughout the course of this prolonged period, he had ample opportunities to groom himself most aptly, which will certainly help him to scale up to the top-notch position he now holds. As a monarch who tends to embrace contemporary arts and disciplines, he has expressed a praiseworthy intention to be the defender of faiths, including the faith of British Muslims.
Will he succeed and ultimately be able to see the full moon down this challenging highway? It’s a matter for history to tell. However, there is one surefire way to raise his high watermark, and that is by leveraging the intelligent social virtues embedded in
I am delighted to share that King Charles has read my writing in the Bangla Mirror before, a paper that I found, and was considerate enough to inform me through his aides of how impressed he was. I am thrilled as the newly minted king ploughs the seed across the land, ushering in a new era. Once again, I pick up my pen and paintbrush.
Ramadan, one of the five cores of Islam, has a plethora of core elements that can help foster a stronger and understanding diverse faith community. As King Charles has expressed his desire to become the defender of faiths, there is much that he can learn from the intelligent social virtues embedded in Ramadan.
Ramadan requires us to refrain from food, water, and physical intimacy while fasting. In addition to its spiritual values, there is a panoply of disciplines that can help us better organise our daily lives on Earth. It teaches us to be selfless, putting the needs of others before our own, and to be charitable and tolerant. These are values that are essential to building a harmonious and peaceful society where all faiths can thrive.
Furthermore, the practice of fasting during Ramadan requires Muslims to show tolerance
Council sets out plans to invest £13.7m in youth service
Plans to invest £13.7m in Tower Hamlets Council’s youth service, including a rebrand and expansion, were approved at Cabinet on 26 April. The investment follows a reduction in funding to youth services both locally and nationally.
It forms part of the council’s wider investment in young people, which includes:
• £5.7m for universal free school meals for both primary and secondary school pupils
• £1.1m to re-introduce Education Maintenance Allowances and University Bursaries
• £730k for children with special educational and additional needs (SEND)
The new youth service, named Young Tower Hamlets, will provide a diverse programme of free opportunities and support
for young people aged 11-19 (25 with SEND) across the borough.
Focus will be placed on supporting young people’s post-16 transition into education, training and employment; increasing
work, and access spaces where they feel safe and cared for.
“It will ensure that every young person in Tower Hamlets has the best start in life and can access opportunities that will enable them to fulfil their potential.
“As a key part of my vision for the borough and a core element of the council’s Strategic Plan, I am very excited to see the development of the service, and to witness how it helps our young people thrive in years to come.”
towards others who may not be fasting, as well as towards people of different faiths and cultures. This spirit of tolerance promotes understanding and respect between different groups, contributing to a more harmonious and peaceful society.
Ramadan also fosters a sense of community cohesion. The shared experience of fasting and spiritual reflection brings people together, creating a sense of unity. This is exemplified during the iftar meal that breaks the fast at sunset, where Muslims often invite others to share in the festivities, creating a sense of community and belonging that extends beyond the month of Ramadan. If King Charles were to embrace the
intelligent social virtues embedded in Ramadan, drawn from the blessed content of this holy month, he would be better equipped to foster a stronger and more understanding diverse faith community. Although these virtues are quite common, their origins in Ramadan provide a unique perspective and depth to their understanding and practice. Practically, it teaches individuals to prioritise the needs of others, be charitable and tolerant, and promote community cohesion, thus contributing to the creation of a harmonious and peaceful society with a divine purpose, where existence means more than just a mundane passing by.
British Parliamentarians Praise Bangladesh over Rohingyas

young people’s participation in universal ‘safe spaces’; preventing young people from offending and entering the criminal justice system; and increasing employment opportunities for residents in both paid and voluntary youth work roles.
Lutfur Rahman, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, said:
“Young people are our future leaders, which is why this investment is so important.
“Young Tower Hamlets will provide support for young people to expand their talents, transition into further education or
As part of the redesign process, young people aged 11-19 are invited to shape the new service by attending one of four consultation events (no booking required):

On 2 May 2023 British parliamentarians debated, “Support for Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh”. The debate was moved by Bedford MP, Mohammad Yasin, who had visited Bangladesh and Cox’s Bazar in January of this year.
Speaker after speaker from Labour, the Conservatives and the Scottish National Party praised the generosity of the Bangladesh Government,
but noted that they could not be expected to meet this challenge alone.
Syed Mozammel Ali, Chair of the Bangladesh Study Circle, said, “We are grateful to Mohammad Yasin and the other MPs who spoke in this debate. The Rohingya are one of the most vulnerable refugee populations in the World, victims of the brutal Myanmar Junta. Bangladesh has been open-
hearted in taking in the Rohingya, and it is right that British MPs have recognised this, and the need to support Bangladesh. It is also important to recognise that this situation is unsustainable and, as Mohammad Yasin said, the goal has to be to create conditions for the Rohingya to return home in “safety, dignity and security” as soon as possible”.
