Net migration hits record high of 606,000
Post Desk : The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released the latest immigration statistics covering the period January to December 2022.
As expected, the figures show that net migration in the year ending December 2022 was the highest on record at an estimated +606,000, though the figure is lower than some widely reported forecasts in the media.
people coming to the UK from non-EU countries for work, study and for humanitarian purposes, including those arriving from Ukraine and Hong Kong. For the first time since using our new methods to measure migration, we have also included asylum seekers in our estimates, with around 1 in 12 non-EU migrants coming via this route.
"There are some signs that the
First Bangladeshi made Lord Mayor of Cardiff
towards the rest of the world, especially India.
Professor Portes added that net migration is likely to be lower in 2023 than in 2022, and the narrative that immigration is spiralling ever upwards or is out of control is simply false. The Home Office also today published its immigration statistics for the year ending March 2023, which can be accessed
According to the ONS, immigration was an estimated 1.2 million in 2022, and emigration an estimated 557,000.
As the ONS always stresses, its estimates are provisional, experimental and have a degree of uncertainty around them.
Non-EU immigration was estimated by the ONS at 925,000 for 2022, an increase of 287,000 compared with 2021, while EU immigration was an estimated 151,000, down 45,000 compared with 2021.
Non-EU long-term immigration in 2022 saw an estimated 235,000 arrivals on work visas and 361,000 arrivals on study-related visas. An estimated 172,000 people arrived on humanitarian routes, such as from Ukraine and Hong Kong.
The ONS is also, for the first time, now including asylum seekers in its estimates. People arriving to seek asylum made up 8% of non-EU immigration in 2022 (76,000 people).
Jay Lindop, director of the ONS's Centre for International Migration, noted: "A series of unprecedented world events throughout 2022 and the lifting of restrictions following the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic led to record levels of international immigration to the UK.
"The main drivers of the increase were
underlying drivers behind these high levels of migration are changing. As lockdown restrictions were lifted in 2021, we saw a sharp increase in students arriving. Recent data suggests that those arriving in 2021 are now leaving the country, with the overall share of non-EU immigration for students falling in 2022. In contrast, those arriving on humanitarian routes increased over the 12 months. Evidence also suggests immigration has slowed in recent months, potentially demonstrating the temporary nature of these events."
Jonathan Portes, professor of economics at King's College London, noted on Twitter with regard to the ONS statistics: "Migration was at record levels last year, but has stopped rising and is now likely to fall, with fewer refugees and higher student emigration. So-called 'forecasts' were wrong. … [N]et migration is, according to these stats, no longer rising. In year to December 2022, it was down, not up, compared to year ending October 2022, and was unchanged from year to June 2022. Emigration has risen quite sharply and has been rising faster than immigration."
Portes further noted that, more broadly, the figures show the continued impact of Brexit and a reorientation of UK migration flows away from the EU and
here.
They show the backlog of asylum claims awaiting a decision continues to grow. The Home Office said: "At the end of March 2023, there were 133,607 cases (relating to 172,758 people) awaiting an initial decision. This is 50% more than the number of applications awaiting an initial decision at the end of March 2022 (89,344, relating to 109,735 people). The number of cases awaiting an initial decision has increased over the last 10 years and more rapidly since 2018, when there were 22,100 cases awaiting an initial decision (at the end of March)." There was, however, a significant increase in the number of initial decisions made, with the Home Office noting: "In the year ending March 2023, there were 19,706 initial decisions made on asylum applications, 35% more than in the previous year. This suggests a return to pre-COVID-19 levels of decisions (20,766 decisions were made in 2019), which may be in part due to the increase in the number of asylum decision makers employed by the Home Office."
Just under three-quarters (74%) of the initial decisions in the year ending March 2023 saw a grant of refugee status, humanitarian protection or alternative forms of leave.

She is the first woman to hold the post since 2019.
Ms Molik said her political journey began by wanting to "prove" that "women of colour with young kids" can "achieve greatly".
“I had to prove that and open those doors for the community,” she said.
Ms Molik has been a councillor since 2017.
“Having two young girls, I did want the world to be different for them when they come to that stage," she added.
The councillor arrived to Cardiff from Bangladesh with her family in the 1980s at the age of six, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
As a “very chatty” young girl, moving to a country where she did not know the language was a daunting experience for her.
Throughout her life she said she has had to overcome a number of hurdles in educational and professional settings.
She said: “It isn’t just becoming lord mayor, it is how I deliver in the year and my commitment that hopefully sends a positive message for everyone in Cardiff.”
Ms Molik said that while she was in school “they would say maybe your English isn’t good enough because your background is such.
“Self doubt does come and it did come in me many times because of those things being said, because I was different.
“The constant challenge for me was to prove those things wrong and it still is today so that the next generation has a better opportunity going forward.”
Ms Molik, said she will be choosing to support UCAN Productions as her chosen charity.
UCAN Productions provides opportunities in performance and creative arts for blind and partially sighted children and young people.
She said the challenges that visually impaired people face often go under the radar and they often do not have the platform to raise their concerns.

Together We Chanted "Labbayek Allahumma Labbayek"
By Shofi Ahmed
We know that our time on earth is fleeting, like a boat briefly docking on an alluring shore. Nothing remains here permanently. Taking a pause on this remarkable journey through the mundane world is only temporary, like stopping a car on a captivating highway. We understand the transient nature of our existence. However, when a loved one of us leaves from this mortal landscape, we grieve. We shed tears. Yet, it is not a wrong thing to do, for even our beloved Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) experienced sorrow when his son Ibrahim (RA) passed away in infancy. He acknowledged that it is a natural response, not a complaint.
I sought to mourn the loss of a dear cousin of mine likewise. We shared a profound bond, having embarked on the Hajj pilgrimage together and cherished numerous precious memories. The essence
of those moments continues to resurface. I leave it to you to discern whether I maintained a state of equilibrium amidst these emotions. In the serene rose gardens, the joy of meeting someone next to the blooming flowers is indescribable. It brings immense joy, as the company of flowers is always delightful. And how profoundly blissful it would be to have a companion strolling towards the gardens of Allah SWT during Hajj. Together, we fervently chanted "Labbayek Allahumma Labbayek," expressing our devoted presence before
Allah SWT. On the polished path, as the golden dawn broke over the towering minarets of the Ka'bah in Makkah, resounding with the call to Fajr prayer, we were surrounded by a multitude of angels descending with bags full of abundant blessings from the heavens. Such was my experience with my cousin, Bahar Uddin Aftar and sister-in-law, his wife Lila Begum, as we embarked on the Hajj pilgrimage as brothers. We encountered divine moments and wove countless sacred memories that will be cherished in our hearts for years to come.
These are enduring connections that never fade away; they are tightly woven and everlasting.
On 6th Dhu Al-Qa’dah 1444 Hijri, Friday, May 26 2003, my dear cousin took the ultimate leap, daringly departing from the earthly realm. Soaring high, he sought the boundless mercy of the Most Generous, as he met the final hour. Now, he stands at the grand gate of paradise, leaving behind the dust of the earth, yearning for eternal bliss.
May Allah SWT grant him entry into up high in Jannatul Firdawoos and shower him with His infinite mercy.
The Historical Surrender of the Pakistan Army in Bangladesh: A New Perspective on the 16th of December, 1971
morphosed into the Bangladesh Liberation War.
Imran A. Chowdhury
Introduction: The 16th of December, 1971, witnessed a decisive moment in the history of South Asia, resulting in the birth of Bangladesh as an independent nation. This event is marked by the surrender of the Pakistan Army to the Indian Army, signifying a pivotal conclusion to the nine-month-long Bangladesh Liberation War. This paper aims to scrutinise this historical surrender, reexamining the events and key players that led to this momentous shift in geopolitical dynamics.
Pakistan's Predicament: The story begins with the controversial results of the 1970 general elections in Pakistan. The Awami League, led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who hailed from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) - The founding father of Bangladesh), won the majority. However, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party from West Pakistan refused to hand over power. This led to widespread protests, civil disobedience, and eventually an armed conflict, which later meta-
The Liberation War: Pakistan's military commenced Operation Searchlight on the 25th of March, 1971, intending to suppress any Bengali nationalist movements. The brutal operation led to massive bloodshed and human rights abuses, which galvanised global attention and prompted India to intervene. The Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, provided substantial moral and material support to the Mukti Bahini, the Bengali nationalist forces.
The Role of India and the Final Confrontation: In response to the growing refugee crisis and incursions by the Pakistan military, the Indian Army officially entered the war on the 3rd of December, 1971. Under the astute leadership of Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora, the Eastern Command of the Indian Army launched a multi-pronged offensive, ultimately cornering the Pakistani forces. The Pakistan Army, led by Lieutenant General A.A.K. Niazi, found itself in an untenable position due to the mounting pressure, effective Indian strategies, and the relentless guerrilla warfare of the Mukti Bahini.
Surrender and the Birth of Bangladesh: On the 16th of December, 1971, a public ceremony was
held at the Race Course Ground in Dhaka. Lieutenant General Niazi of the Pakistan Army signed the Instrument of Surrender, signifying the formal surrender of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers to the Indian Army and effectively marking the end of the war. This significant event paved the way for the birth of Bangladesh as an independent nation. This surrender, however, was not just a mere military defeat; it was a stark testament to the Pakistani Army's failure to uphold the values of humanity, respect, and dignity. Throughout the nine-month-long conflict, the world was made aware of their derogatory behaviour, clear violations of the Geneva Convention, and the gross perpetuation of a large-scale human catastrophe. Reports from multiple reliable sources, including journalists, researchers, and humanitarian organisations, painted a grim picture of the Pakistani Army's brutal campaign against the Bengali population.
The scale and intensity of the violence unleashed by the Pakistani forces during the Bangladesh Liberation War were unprecedented, amounting to what many consider to be the most horrific genocide after the Holocaust. The figures are chilling: according to estimates, around three million people were killed, and hundreds of thousands
of women were subjected to sexual violence. The brutality was relentless and seemingly without reason, leaving millions of people displaced from their homes, forced to seek refuge in neighbouring India. The international community was largely silent during the initial months of the genocide, a passivity that contributed to the horror. But as news leaked out, thanks largely to the courage of journalists and diplomats on the ground, the world was confronted with the grim reality of the massacre being perpetrated by the Pakistani forces. The United Nations and other international bodies were compelled to react belatedly.
Pakistan's audacious violations of the Geneva Conventions, which explicitly prohibit the inhumane treatment of civilians and POWs, shocked the global community's conscience. The Pakistani forces were seen as directly challenging the international rules-based order, which strives to limit the suffering caused by war.
The surrender of the Pakistan Army on the 16th of December, 1971, was a momentous event that revealed the vast scale of their malfeasance. The public humiliation they faced did not merely arise from a military defeat but was a damning indictment of their cowardice and egregious disregard for basic human
rights. The birth of Bangladesh from the ashes of this profound human catastrophe signified a triumph of the human spirit and the resilience of the Bengali people against oppression and tyranny.
Conclusion: The surrender of the Pakistan Army in Bangladesh is a stark reminder of the culmination of a struggle for identity and independence. It reshaped the geopolitical dynamics in South Asia, underscoring the resilience of the Bengali people and the strategic acumen of the Indian Army. On the broader canvas of history, it stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of humanity against oppression. Despite the historic humiliation endured in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, the Pakistan Army has learned little from the experience. They persistently attempt to rewrite history, downplaying the atrocities committed and often questioning the legitimacy of the war's outcome. This attitude perpetuates denial and avoidance rather than introspection and acknowledgement of past mistakes. The continued refusal to learn from their past misdeeds underscores a concerning lack of remorse and contrition, reflecting an uncompromising stance that hampers the progression towards genuine reconciliation and lasting peace in the region.

Seventy Muslim scouts group raised 32K for survivors of the Türkiye/Syria earthquake
One of the first Muslim Scouts groups in London, 7th Goodmayes, walked from masjid to masjid (mosque to mosque) in Redbridge, East London on Saturday 27 May 2023, to support Islamic Relief’s Türkiye/Syria earthquake appeal.
The Scout group raised a record amount of 32K, for what was their first sponsored walk since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Seventy Scouts from the ages of four to 18 participated, walking 12 miles from Gardens of Peace Cemetery to Newbury Park Mosque, Gants Hill Masjid, Redbridge Masjid, Masjid-e-uwais-eQarni, Masjid al-Falah, Ilford Muslim Society, Seven Kings Masjid, Masjid Ansar, Masjid Adam, Ilford Islamic Centre Masjid, Loxford Muslim Society, Eton Road Community Centre and finally Al Madina Masjid. The money raised went towards Islamic
Relief UK’s emergency appeal to help those affected by the Türkiye/Syria
earthquake in which approximately 30 million people were affected in Türkiye and 10.9 million in Syria. Islamic Relief is on the ground providing food, hygiene kits, medicine, shelter, and other muchneeded assistance.
Shabana Shaukat, Group Scout Leader said: “All the scouts who took part in the walk are literally taking positive steps within our community to help raise thousands of pounds for people in need. I am truly humbled and inspired by the impact of the collective fundraising efforts of the group.”
Faysal Maruf one of the founding leaders of 7th Goodmayes Scout Group said: “It’s inspiring to be part of such a dedicated group of scout leaders who are volunteering week in and week out for our young people.”
European fact-finding team visits Chittagong
A European delegation led by former Member of the Dutch Parliament and human rights activist Harry Van Bommel and comprised of genocide scholar from Amsterdam
Dr Anthonie Holslag, UK security specialist
Chris Blackburn, European Bangladesh Forum (EBF) Dutch President Bikash Chowdhury Barua and UK President Ansar
Ahmad Ullah visited Chittagong 24 of May. The team, accompanied by Aamra Ekattor’s Pradip Kumar Dutta, Forum for Secular Bangladesh’s Showkat Bangali, visited the slaughterhouses of Jagat Malla Para and Unosottor Para of Raozan on the afternoon of May 25 and spoke to the relatives of the martyrs. The family members of the martyrs spoke about their loss and grief. Martyrs' family members thanked the delegation for working on their behalf to recognise Bangladesh’s genocide. The leaders of the delegation expressed their gratitude in speaking to the relatives of the martyrs of Raozan and hoped for international recognition.
European Bangladesh Forum team were welcomed by Aamra Ekattor, Projonmo 71, and various socio-cultural organisations, including Forum for Secular Bangladesh, freedom fighter AK Fazlul Haque Public Library, Amara Korbo Joi and Raozan Municipality Mayor Jamir Uddin Parvez.
Local municipal commissioner Shaukat Hasan, Professor Nirad Kul, Dr Mukul Kanti Roy, Pradeep Dey, Diplu Dey, freedom fighter Ajit Babu, freedom fighter Badal Palit, Biplab Mahajan, Dilip Sen, Mohammad Asif, Sujan Chowdhury, Mizanur Rahman, Ashraful Islam Abir and the local Pahartali UP chairman welcomed the delegation at Unosottor Para that evening. In addition, Ajit Mahajan, Swapan Das, Swapan Ghosh, Tilak Ghosh, Umapati Pal, Sanjay Pal, and Mithan Pal were present among the relatives of the martyrs.
Former Dutch MP Harry Van Bommel said that the EBF team is working internationally to get the UN recognition of the brutal and
barbaric genocide that the Pakistanis carried out on the innocent Bengalis starting on March 25. Global advocacy for recognition of the 1971 genocide has already begun. This proposal has been raised in the Netherlands, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Even after 50 years, the fact that the 'Bangladesh Genocide of 1971' is not recognised internationally is very painful. He emphasised the formation of world public opinion so that no more genocide could occur anywhere.
During the Liberation War, Western countries, including the United States, opposed Bangladesh, and hence the recognition of the genocide in 1971 was delayed. Dr Anthonie Holslag said that various US-based human rights organisations are now recognising the genocide in Bangladesh. It will be possible to get this recognition from the United Nations. Governments around the world must be pressured to recognise this genocide. And that is precisely why a scientific discussion is needed on this issue. Acknowledgement of genocide is important for victims and their families. He said we spoke to families, witnesses and experts of the 1971 genocide. Besides, I will go to the Netherlands with the information obtained after visiting the places of various mas-
sacres and apply for recognition of this massacre. I will also campaign. Besides, I will take the witnesses of the genocide to the Dutch Parliament and present their statements.
British security expert Chris Blackburn said, "Our goal is to know what happened in this country in 1971 and show it to the world." At the same time, inform the international community why international recognition of this genocide is necessary.
Engineer Pradip Kumar Dutta, the son of a martyr, said that the Pakistani army attacked the unarmed people of this country on the night of March 25 to strangle the Bengali liberation movement. In the operation called 'Operation Searchlight', the massacre was carried out in Dhaka in the early hours of the night. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared independence before being arrested by Pakistani forces in the early hours of March 26, and the Bengali resistance began. The final victory was achieved on 16 December in return for the sacrifice of three million martyrs, the loss of honour of two and a half million mothers and sisters and the extraordinary sacrifice of the nation in the nine months of the war. An independent sovereign state called Bangladesh emerged on the world map. In
2017, a proposal to observe March 25 as 'Genocide Day' was accepted by Bangladesh’s Parliament to commemorate the victims of the brutal massacre by the Pakistani invading forces. Since then, Bangladesh has been demanding international recognition in this regard.
Author-journalist Showkat Bangali, Central Member Secretary of the Forum for Secular Bangladesh, said the Forum is working to create worldwide awareness. The EBF team who visited the Pahartali slaughterhouse on the evening of 24 May was greeted by Pahartali killing fields Parishad Convenor Mostafa Kamal Jartra, former Councillor Abida Azad, Member Secretary Shahabuddin Angur, journalist Bashir Ahmed Rubel, martyred family member Gazi Kamal Uddin Kamrul, freedom fighter Rouful Hussain Suja, Jasim Uddin Ahmed, Selim Badshah, Abu Sufian, Motahar Hussain Swapan, Robiul Islam, Abdul Karim, Md Rony, Md Sohel, Md Sabbir, Md Abir amongst others. The EBF team also attended an international symposium at the Seniors Club on 25 May and Press Club on 26 May.
