With a total of 13.9% increase from the previous Academic Year, the Laguna State Polytechnic University – Santa Cruz Main Campus (LSPU-SCC) sets record high 10,058 total enrolees, the Office of the Registrar releasing the official tally of the number of enrolees for this current semester.

Acquiring the highest

number of enrolees is the College of Engineering (COE) as they recorded 2,152 (21.40%) enrolees as they once again considered as the most indemand for students. Aiming to inform and to prepare all the students and professors on an unexpected magnitude 7.2 quake in West Valley Fault, Supreme Student Council (SCC) of Laguna State Polytechnic University-Santa Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC) underwent an earthquake drill held at LSPU-SCC open field, July 16.

In order for this event to be a successful one, student leaders, class presidents and other officers from different colleges attended in a meeting about the flow of the drill and inform the rest of their classmates about it.

Meanwhile, on the drill proper, A/Prof. Francisco Buna, from College of Industrial Technology (CIT), led the activity with the full cooperation of different colleges.

LSPU-SCC Shelters New Buildings By | Zynell Mangilin

Aiming to provide students a more convenient facilities for a higher quality of education, 3 new buildings were approved and being constructed at Laguna State Polytechnic University – Santa Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC) for this semester.

College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) students, especially first year HRM students, now enjoyed the new CHMT laboratory this academic year. Built last year, this lab is well equipped with heavy duty apparatus like oven, deep fryer, salamander, hot and cold kitchen for main courses and appetizers, grill with volcanic rocks, flambé, and working tables. Also, there is a space for future use which is dedicated for bakery science.

5 SCC-CONAH grads pass nursing board exam By l Reniel Renz Gallardo

Proving that they are one of the bests in producing quality nurses in the whole region, College of Nursing and Allied Health (CONAH) got a total 83.33% passing rate on the Nursing Licensure Examination. The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released the result of May 2015.

After a massive 93.55% performance last year, 5 newly registered nurses was produced by LSPU namely; Mara Carisma Amari, RN, Hazel Jara, RN, Joseph Martin Fabula, RN, Eliezer Obmerga,

RN and Louridel Oriña, RN, 2 of them were first takers with 100% passing rate, 75% were re-takers 3 passed out of 4 examinees.

All the examinees gone through 5 parts of exams: Nursing Practice I (Basic Foundation Of Nursing and Professional Nursing Practice), Nursing Practice II( Community Health Nursing and care of mother and child), Nursing Practice III ( Care Of Client with Physiologic and Psychological Alternation-Part A), Nursing Practice IV(Care Of Client with Physiologic and Psychological

Alternation-Part B) and Nursing Practice V(Care Of Client with Physiologic and Psychological Alternation-Part C).

Tests draw basic knowledge, skills and attitudes in major subject areas such as Fundamentals of Nursing including Professional Adjustments, Maternal Child Nursing, Community Health and Communicable Disease Nursing, Nursing of Adolescents, Adult and Age and Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing.

PRC produced a total of 54.25% national passing rate. ***

To find a company provider who will help on improving the College of Engineering (COE) Solar Power Energy, Laguna State Polytechnic University – Santa Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC) hosted the MSME Business Matching Event with Green Service Providers sponsored by the Department of Trade Industry-Laguna (DTI) held at the HRM Function Hall, Aug. 5.

Promotion of Green Economic Development (ProGED) who is the head company to this event, Meralco, Solar NRG and Tojo Motors as they individually discussed the latest trends about green technology.

The program also highlighted some of the topics including the Green Business Strategies Water Management where in it focuses on the process flow of the company, how to get it into the market and how to make a business. Green technology focuses on the current trends and innovations in the country which at the same time helps the environment

protection.

Meanwhile, last year’s second most populous College of Techer Education (CTE) got a total of 1427 (14.64%). College of Computer Studies (CCS) has the fourth most in demand courses with their 1034 (10.28%) students.

Moreover, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) placed fifth as they got a total of 998 (9.92%) students. In addition, they also recorded an increase of (23.26%) from last year. College

Furthermore, ethics and Accountability on Multidisciplinarian Collaborative research was discussed by Dr. Genaro V. Japos, the president of the International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research (IAMURE). It was followed by the discussion on strengthening the research capability of Professionals in the Light ASEAN 2015 by Dr. Evelyn J. Grey, the President of International Alliance of Research Enthusiasts.

CCS freshmen attends orientation

Aiming to inform all the freshmen students, College of Computer Studies (CCS) of the Laguna State Polytechnic University-Santa Cruz Main Campus (LSPUSCC) conducted its orientation for freshmen held at the University Multi-Purpose Hall and Gymnasium, June 15.

Associate Dean Mia Villarica, led the event as she presented the University Officials, Campus Officials and the faculty members of CCS. Mr. Edward Flores, regular faculty discussed the Campus Offices.

Subsequently, Mr. Richard Ampo informed the freshmen about the different rules and regulations of the university so as Mr. James Aaron Guevara who talked about the college rules and regulations.

Ms. Lormatet Altamirano gave her speech about the student services while Ms. Ma. Lailanie Bautista announced the wearing of proper school uniform. She also mentioned that regular school uniform should be worn every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. A YEAR IN REVIEW. President Benigno Aquino III during his last State of Nation Adress, proudly talking about his administrations achievements for the past year, July 27.

"We implemented K to 12 because it is not practical to cram learning in a 10-year basic education cycle." -PNoy

These were the words of President Benigno Aquino Jr. during his last State of the Nation Address (SONA) as he pointed some of the issues and programs implemented on education sector last July 27.

PNoy updated his citizens about the status of the K-12 program which will be implemented next school year in secondary level. He also stated the preparation of their requirements such as the backlogs of 66,800 classrooms, 145,827 teachers, 73.9 million textbooks that are already provided. In addition, he added

that for the 2016 proposed budget, around 103.2 million textbooks and 4.4M chairs already included.

Meanwhile, PNoy also highlighted the Alternative Learning System which helped the Filipino to ensure that even indigenous peoples and street children are not left behind in education by extending it to the community base.

Another thing that he consider is the TESDA program of the government wherein it continuously producing a more skilled workers. Proving to this is the studies show that 71.9% TESDA graduates found employment right away.

Moreover, Pres. Aquino also mentioned on his last SONA

LAGUNA NEWS Gov. Hernandez initiates ‘Serbisyong Tama’ caravan

Aiming to help and reach out the Lagunenses especially those indigent people, Governor Ramil Hernandez together with the Provincial Government of Laguna (PGL) conducted Serbisyong Tama Caravan all over the province.

From time to time, Gov. Hernandez visits different towns around the four districts to serve free services. Among these were feeding programs for children’s, medical, dental and optical with free medicine; livelihood demos and trainings; pet vaccination; free massage; facial care, haircut and foot spa; free fruit bearing tree seedlings and vegetable seeds and jobs fairs which was attended by different agencies local and abroad. Courtesy calls, oath takings, and barangay matters were also conducted during his caravan.

According to PGL, caravans were successfully conducted with the full support of the Local Government Units such as Calamba City Mayor Justin Marc “Timmy” SB. Chipeco and the City Council; Kalayaan Sangguniang Bayan together with Mayor Teodoro Adao in Kalayaan, Laguna.

Dir. Chris Sanji, Provincial Information Officer of Laguna, broadcasted these events live through Royal Cable TV6.

Laguna commemorates Rizal’s 154th Birthday By | Romel Brian Florendo

To pave way for the celebration of the 154th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, Malacanang, headed by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III, issued a proclamation that will serve June 19 as a special non-working holiday for the province of Laguna, released this May 26.

The proclamation, also known as the Proclamation No. 1039, was signed by the Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa. Agreeing on the same goal of the proclamation, several officials also signed the said paper.

Furthermore, the event was named as the Buhayani Festival at Calamba City. Living with a theme of “Buhayani: Buhay ng Bayani, Buhay na Bayani,” the event has included the opening of the modernized Museo of Rizal by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP). national hero, symbolic floats with their own perception of designs, delegations of costumes, filmshowings, and lastly, the grand parades. Every event has their own creativity on how they will express their nationalism and

love for the said national hero.

Despite the fact of the initiatives on making June 19 as Rizal Day instead of December 30, officials still commit to the fact that June 19 is the birth of our hero that must be remembered.***

Dubbed with the theme “Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies“ , Government of Laguna joined the yearly celebration of World Population Day in order for them to give importance and further understanding about the importance of population, held at the municipality of Santa Cruz, July 11.

In accordance of Governor Ramil Hernandez, the celebration was composed of different activities which aimed to acknowledge the primary rights and needs of women especially the young one. In addition, it also deals with preserving their security and dignity against with those bad man.

Moreover, world population day is celebrated every year in order to promote

the importance of being knowledgeable in different angles of population like the people’s unawareness of things involving population that often cause trubles.

This was started in the year 1989 wherein the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended that the 11th day of July be observed by the international community as World Population Day, as a day to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues.

As to make this event completely, the government made a way to increase their understanding on how to take care of their health. ***

4 LSPU-SCC assembles for General Orientation By | Ma. Xena Bautista

YOU ARE SECURED. A/Prof. Virgilio Bartolome, director of the Office of Student Affairs and Services assuring the campus security to freshmen, shifters and transferees during this year’s general orientation, June 17.

LSPU gears up for ... order for every Higher Education Institution (HEI) to implement Outcomes-Based Education or OBE. This step was initiated by the Curriculum, Instruction Development, and Quality Assurance Unit of the office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs headed by its chairperson, Dr. Zenaida O. Vitasa.

Dr. Gaerlan provided a springboard for the participants, who were selected faculty from all of the campuses of the university, to come up with an OBE-dized Learning Program. She further emphasized on its concepts, philosophies and principles.

To heighten the participants knowledge on OBE, Dr. Jerome Chavez, another resource speaker, talked on assessment for OBE. He expounded on salient points such as the validity, flexibility and reliability of assessment tasks.

information about Gender and Development (GAD) as a tool for improving the teaching-learning atmosphere.

“I have always heard people talking about GAD, they always tell that this is just for women, but they are wrong, it is also for men and gender equality.

Men can also be abused, it is just they are afraid to expose it,” Rodriquez uttered.

These resource speeches served as factors for the participants to formulate model learning programs for their specific colleges. In addition, all of them contributed to produce Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) which are essential to the new Learning Program.

After the participants formulated their Learning Programs, representatives from various groups presented their works. Some of them were Mr. Philip Cuizon from the College of Arts and Sciences who anchored their learning program to CHED

Memorandum Order number 38 series of 2010 or the policies and standards for undergraduate programs in Psychology and Dr. Edilberto Andal from the College of Industrial Technology who discussed their learning program for Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology.

Meanwhile, Dr. Gaerlan diligently critiqued the learning programs presented.

She commented and suggested actions that may be done to come up with a fully OBE-dized university. As an end note, she congratulated the participants and encouraged them to strive harder to achieve the objectives.

The event was also graced by the university president, Hon. Nestor M. De Vera, who sent his support for the said paradigm shift. He expressed his trust for the achievement of the goals to the faculty members who participated the momentous event. ***

9 CMU Students Undergoes IELP Course

Proper dissemination of pieces of information about the university and other services is the main goal of the two-day General Orientation for freshmen, transferees and continuers held at Laguna State Polytechnic University – Sta. Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC) Multi- Purpose Gymnasium and Hall, June 17-18.

The said program was organized by the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS) in coordination with Supreme Student Council (SSC) headed by their adviser, Mr Rhoniel vibora and Lyndzei Bermudez, SSC President.

Various administrators were given time to discussed the different services and privileges that the students could afford in this university.

Mr. Hoseal B. Gayman introduced the Library services like how to borrow books and the proper way of staying inside the Library. On the other

hand, Catalyn Rose P. Angeles, university nurse, introduced the medical serves together with Dr. Raymond Nonatos G. Coria on the Dental services.

Guidance services like helping students on their emotional problems or counseling was discussed

by Mrs. Josie H. Consebido, University Guidance Counselor, with Mrs. Melissa Rose A. Tupas as they enlightened the mind of the students on the scholarships grants and programs that they could fit in on the length of their study and its counterpart responsibility.

LSPU-SCC also offers Multi- Faith Services that was tackled by Prof. Maria Eva E. Diongco while Safety and Security Services was delivered

by Associate Dean Leslie Salazar during the College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) orientation for freshmen and their parents, held at CHMT Function Hall, LSPU-SCC, June 15-16.

The parents-students orientation mainly focused on the discussion for the upcoming tours, seminars and other activities for the freshmen students of BS Tourism and BS

HRM for the entire semester.

Assoc. Dean Salazar explained how important it is for the students to have activities like these. In addition, she also presented the tour packages for both Tourism and HRM students, which include the destination, hotel accommodation, seminar, other included activities and its amount. She also clarified the CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) no. 17 series of 2012 which states the policies and guidelines for Educational Tours.

Moreover, selected faculties from the department also discussed the importance of wearing proper uniforms for the specific day assigned to it.

As part of the program that the university offers to foreign students, nine (9) Korean students from Changwon Moonsung University (CMU) attended Intensive English Language Proficiency (IELP) course at Laguna State Polytechnic University Santa Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC) June 27.

The said program was conducted with the assistance and support of the allied universities with the consent of Dr. Lee Won Suk and Dr. Nestor M. De Vera, University President of CMU and LSPU-System, respectively.

In line with the association of the two institutions, Yoo Dae Hyeon, Jang Che Min, Lee Sang Hoon, Lee Hyun Seok, Jeon Jung Eun, Seon Seong Jin, Song Seong Hyeok, Lee Sung Ho and Lee Hak Min were invited and chosen to take and undergo the IELP course together with Prof. Shim Chang Min for guidance and security of the program participants.

To give and help people who are in need of blood, College of Nursing and Allied Health (CONAH) conducted a Blood Letting Program with the volunteer students of Laguna State Polytechnic UniversitySanta Cruz Campus (LPSUSCC) held at the College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) Function Hall, July 30.

With the help of the Supreme Student Council (SSC), Rotary Club of Cavinti, Government Dentists of Laguna, and Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), the said activity successfully reached their goal to have 200 blood donors. The College of Engineering (COE) had the most number of volunteers with 81 donors. Dr. Mamerto M. Sueña, M.D. led the whole operation.

stated by Ms. Janice Bernardo, RN, from CONAH that the volunteers will have benefits from PNRC such as receiving a card they can use for free checkup within three months, free screening for infection and fast replenishment of their blood cells. In order to hire new versatile and virtuosic staff members, The Gears Publication conducted its annual seminar-workshop and orientation, themed “Transcending Versatility through Campus Press,” held at Faith Bless Function Hall II, Santa Cruz, Laguna, July 2-4.

The said event was attended by aspiring students, not only composed of freshmen but of higher-year students as well, who want to become members of the said publication.

It kicked-off with the talked in Feature Writing Lecture delivered by Lou Fatima Muega, The Gears’ Feature Editor.

As for the contest proper, the participants were asked to do a personality sketch.

as he led its discussion. Then, as the final lecture for the first day, Ms. Julienne Urrea, The Gears’ Editorial Consultant talked about Editorial and Column Writing.

She expounded on the proper ways of voicing out one’s thought through writing.

As the most basic discipline in journalism, News Writing was delivered by the Gears’ News Editor, Joshua Aquino to start the second day.

It was followed by Sports Writing lecture and contest led by The Gears’ Editor-in-Chief, Banjo Ventolero and The Gears’ Sports Editor, Reniel Gallardo.

The afternoon session, was composed of lectures and contests from Xena Bautista, The Gears’ DevCom Editor for DevCom Writing lecture and John Carlos Alvarez, The Gears’ Associate Editor for Photojournalism lecture.

Participants took pictures outside the university and the contest had the theme: “Dream”.

The final day was filled with Poetry Writing lecture and contest by Jan Aldous Virina, The Gears’ Literary Editor, Copyreading and Headline Writing lecture and contest by Ma. Kristelle Jimenez, copy-reader of The Gears and lastly Graphics Illustration and Comic Stripping lecture and contest by The Gears Artists’.

Acquaintance goes Neon Prismatic Party

Possessing the competent skills of being a student teacher (ST), 10 Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English students from the Laguna State Polytechnic University Campuses were sent to the Off-Campus International Student Teaching Program in coordination with Thai Nguyen University (TNU), Socialist Republic of Vietnam, May 19.

Florhaida Pamatmat, International Affairs Coordinator, the chosen students had their flight days before the opening of class in their designated places.

The delegates were Jan Aeriel B. Alvarez, Mhar Kenneth M. Ambrocio, Mariel Kristine A. Mercado, Abegail C. Medina, Rezzle J. Valderama and John Lee G. Blaza from Santa Cruz Campus (SCC); Jgence Joelle F. Parcon and Gian Carlo R. Silang from San Pablo City Campus

(SPCC); and Kristine Bernadette T. Matalog and Rosemarie A. Anzano from Los Baños Campus (LBC).

Subsequently, the student teachers were deployed in their assigned schools in different parts of Vietnam few days after their arrival. They are given their designated VIP rooms to stay in with sufficient needs and financial support from both universities in their span of teaching from May to October 2015.

“As a student it is a great opportunity for me to be one of the student teachers sent here in Vietnam… However, it is not that easy to adapt and adjust with other culture, food and most especially language… It isn’t just training for enhancing teaching skills but also a challenge to deal with different types of people…” said John Lee from SCC in an interview. ***

According to Ms. Charmine Rivera, CHMT Instructor, “With the help of this newly built laboratory, we can conduct kitchen works like in the actual scenario since it resembles a 1st Class restaurant.” She also states that the students will have knowledge in using the real equipment culinary arts, which is very important for those who will undergo to OJT.

Meanwhile, a threestorey building is under construction near the Fitness Center. It is dedicated for the College of Engineering (COE) and now on its third phase.

On the other hand, another two-storey academic building near the College of Teacher Education (CTE) was started to construct last July 25.

In addition, College of Computer Studies (CCS) had begun their fund raising through educational tour for their plans on the construction of the proposed Arduino Laboratory to be used by BS Information Technology and BS Computer Science students.

With the help of these structures, it is expected that LSPU will be more competitive than before. ***

To create an organization for the Amateur Film Makers of LSPU-SCC, Broadcasting students conducted a SeminarWorkshop on Film Making to the Broadcasting Society as initial members held at the ACLA room, Laguna State Polytechnic University – Santa Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC), June 23-25.

The said three-day seminar-workshop, was themed “Pinilakang Tabing 101”. It was composed of lectures about the basics of film making and workshop for the students right after each discussion.

He also showed the delegates how to shoot and create a rapid video as well as editing. The short film outputs of the delegates were criticized on the third day by Ms. Alica ann A. Aquino, Film Critic.

For now, organizers were already working on the papers for the said organization to be fully recognized by the Office of the Students Affairs (OSA) and soon be effective. ***

To strengthen the socialization of the LSPU students with their schoolmates, the Supreme Student Council (SCC) of the Laguna State Polytechnic University – Santa Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC) organized the Acquaintance Party for freshmen, transferees and continuers held at the LSPU Parade Ground, July 16.

Led by their adviser Mr. Rhoniel Vibora and the SSC’s President; Ms. Lyndzei Bermudez, almost 3,700 students attended the said

event which happened for the first time in the LSPU open ground. It was a euphoric night wherein all students were wearing an all-black outfit amazed with the black light and neon color combination.

Moreover, the night goes on to all students as the 9 colleges presented their candidates for this year’s Mr. and Ms. Acquaintance Party. All candidates gave their best shot in their opening presentation and question and answer portion.

Computer Studies (CCS) and Ms Elma De Chavez, College of Engineering (COE) were crowned as this year’s Mr. and Ms. Acquaintance Party. EDITORIAL ISO Certification: A Stepping Stone

Quality excellence for a world-class institution is what the university aims.

P

roving to this is the recent journey that Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) started in order to raise the bar of excellence by adapting global practices of Quality Management Systems Requirements towards the launching of ISO 9001:2008 certification. It is a dream come true for the university as they took a while to prepare for this part of probably their biggest milestone to adapt with the requirements, attain quality management systems for its students and community, and acquire international standards within its system to contribute cost-saving and efficiency.

With this, the university needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide the needs of its students as their main beneficiaries to meet customer and applicable requirements. It also aims to enhance the customer satisfaction in order to engage people on the quality of their program and the whole institution. Several accreditation survey visits which focus on the output-based were already adopted by LSPU but this ISO concerns from the start of operation and continuous monitoring.

There are several reasons why the university tries to adapt this certification. First, it is for the improvement of their facilities. ISO will monitor and update all the facilities of the university from the status of their comfort rooms and water system up to the quality of their classrooms and the ratio of the students. ISO will also check the status of the buildings of all departments, offices and other infrastructures.

Next, it is for the improvement of their internal works. This will focus on what kind of system they used to provide their service. For example, ISO will check how the university operates their enrollment process from the history of the records before up to the storage of data they are using today. Also, the ISO will check on how they control all of the documents and records, their internal audit, their nonconforming products, and their corrective and preventive actions for the improvement of process of the system.

Third, it is for the improvement of customer satisfaction. Every academic institution aims to produce all of their students to be quality graduates and to be globally competitive. This goal can be attained through this certification as it will be proven that LSPU can offer quality but affordable education. Probably, LSPU can also attract more students to enroll and take all of their offerings and to increase the loyalty of their customer to the university.

Last, LSPU will be a customer-focused institution if they passed this certification. With that the university can provide all the needs of their main beneficiaries –the students. It can also sustain customer’s satisfaction by producing, delivering services, and providing support functions that meet customer's needs and expectations. Also, this will increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization through the continuous monitoring of ISO.

Thus, by having this in mind, the implementation of this certification will seem to be like a logical step in gaining a competitive advantage. Advantage that can only be attained if the university unites to improve one thing to another. This step towards quality service will become one of the major steps that the university is now positively looking for. It is for the attainment of LSPU’s long dream to have and for the students whom they are offering for all of this.

Indeed, the quality of education in our university is improving. With this milestone, LSPU will be expected to perform at higher level, behave professionally, and provide quality services throughout.

Perhaps, it will become one of their biggest achievements that can be benefited for a long time. This will also ensure that all things inside the university are being done successfuly. Thus, ISO can be considered as a stepping stone throughout their journey on attaining the university’s goals, mission, and vision. ***

his quote will briefly explain what I’m going to tackle on my column. It is not easy if you failed to gain the trust of people especially those you thought believes in you. I’m not pertaining to any of my personal issues or experiences, I’m just curious on how people still find a way to motivate themselves behind experiences like failing to “impress” other people.

Sometimes, we tend to have an attitude wherein we want to be flawless in order to be liked and accepted by everyone. But do you think that those things will really give you the benefits? It’s a big NO for me. The truth is, when we try to embrace who we are instead of thinking of what others want us to be, we open ourselves to the real happiness. In fact, there are people who are worth impressing but they still prefer to be themselves or stay who they really are.

People honestly cannot avoid comparing ourselves against everyone especially to those people who know a lot about you. Perhaps, it is one of the main reasons for a person to motivate himself and to work harder to prove them wrong, but for others, it turns out to be a nightmare. If you really want to prove something, you must start to prove it from yourself. Reflect if you’ve became a better person than yesterday. All you need to do is to ignore comparisons and expectations that they set to you in order to avoid negative thoughts inside your head.

Believing that this is possible will really take a lot of time. Another reason why is when you hear a lot of opinion from elsewhere. If you let that

Possibly, you have always encountered this from your daily life like when you are competing against your brothers and sisters and when you are making a way to be recognized by your parents if you feel that they are into favoritism. Also, when you are being compared from your physical looks up to where you’re right now, your educational achievements, and many more.

Another one is when you are in an organization or even when you are on your classrooms like when you are in charge of deciding all things. Maybe, some people will always tell you that you are doing wrong yet they didn’t even try to compliment you on your rights. This is the time when people started to focus on what you are doing, even those little things that you did wrong will be easily spotted by your socalled ‘critics’.

After all, you don’t need to run to someone who you think discredits and treat you poorly or unfair without any apparent reason at all. Surely, you cannot get their approvals and full support on what you are doing.

Just ignore them because any bit of time you spend on these people will be wasted. Any bit of an effort you dedicated will also be wasted.

Indeed, I know that if not everyone, most of the people want to be on top of the podium.

Who doesn’t want to be anyway?

But what is important is to know how you got into there. If you’ve been there without thinking of the competition, you will never be compared. One thing you just need to do is to enjoy each and every step and pay attention on what you are doing because the real happiness occurs throughout your whole journey. Don’t stress yourself too much on what you have heard from somewhere for you to go on in life.

hat better way to know what the president had done than to watch his State of the Nation Address? Well, the bad part may be the fact that the things stated were only the achievements of his administration. So how did the last SONA go? Let me take a look back.

First, I would like you to know that I’ve always been disturbed with the president’s habitual innuendo (aside from his coughing). He is very used to stating the negligence of his predecessor and as what was expected, that was how he started the speech.

The president enumerated the issues and shortcomings of the past administration. He stated issues from the known “I am sorry” case up to the NBN-ZTE scandal.

Of course, the alleged billions of pesos corruption was also present in his speech. He even said with emphasis that every

government official takes an oath to do right for our countrymen and to uphold the law, but it was clear – according to him – that his predecessor did precisely the opposite. Did she?

Actually, stating the misdeeds of the past administration is not completely disturbing. It is just good to look back on how bad the past was and how we progressed at the present. What makes it disturbing is the president’s consistent inclusion of the issues to most of his speeches. It can be the way of reminding the people of how the straight path is being chased or it can be him bragging his achievements.

Inevitable were the people against the president and the demonstrators during SONA. These people hoped to hear what the president missed to state.

But before anything else, I just want to share first my point of about our government.

Since we are in a democratic country, politics is a really big deal for all of us, Filipinos. We always keep an eye on our leaders and politicians; what they have done, what they haven’t done. He, in a way or another, was successful in lessening the corruption in the country. A number of politicians were sent to jail, issues on graft and corruption was unveiled.

Thus his battlecry, “Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap (where there is no corruption, there will be no poverty).”

According to the

president, the country’s suffering to poverty was evidently being diminished. He further stated that 80,000 new entrants join the labor force every year and last year, unemployment rate dropped to 6.8 percent, the lowest recorded in the decade.

He again highlighted the growth of the beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps). The president also wanted to ensure that no one should be

But do we think that these polls may determine the winning candidate for the next year? Obviously, it’s not. But it can be considered as a factor that many people are trusting one candidate based on

how many people are choosing them on that survey. Maybe we will think why this candidate tops all the polls? Why this candidate loses trust from citizens? Why this person is being pursed to run as president? Well, we all have different perspective but we should consider also other’s opinion. Maybe those opinions may help us on choosing the right one for our country.

Revised Standards: Accepted or Not? W

hat if there are no standards? Can we ensure that the classrooms where we study are strong enough in case of earthquake for us to enter? Or are we sure that the food served to us are cooked properly and safe to eat?

Standards are made for us to follow. It is a level of quality, attainment, a measure or model in comparable evaluations. If there are no standards, we might think that all things we do are correct, which may lead to various consequences. For

instance, a building which is built through “bahala na” system is weak, and may easily wreck when a disaster comes. In school, when we submit a project that doesn’t meet the standards of our instructor, it is expected to have a poor grade. That shows how important the standard is.

How about when the standards are revised?

Is it acceptable? You might strongly disagree when you hear that question. But try to take some time to look around your surroundings. Everything

is changing, and standards are part of it. I remember the days when I was young, people adore conservative girls. But now, most of them hates that type of living and called them “pabebe”. They will also laugh at girls who wear a long skirt and speak with a straight Filipino accent, which is a culture in the past decades.

The pure Filipino language was modified in which slangs like “jejemon”, “bekimon” or gay language become common.

In line with this, some of our identities like the traditional “balagtasan” that symbolizes the Philippine poetry were replaced by “Fliptop” and other rap battles that contain unpleasant words and messages. Also, our cultural and ethnic dances like Cariñosa and Tinikling have been dominated by Hiphop and sometimes with daring moves.

The worst thing about revised standards is the declining morality. In many lands today, homosexuality and same sex marriage are viewed as normal.

Those lifestyles are even promoted in television, movies, and advertising. I don’t mean to hurt those who belong to the

LGBT community, but we all know that this is not acceptable to our Almighty God since He created “Adam and Eve”, not “Adam and Steve”. Immorality has also become so pervasive wherein sex outside marriage appears to be common. That is particularly true and proven as statistics about population growth shows

wherein for instance, a young man wouldn’t feel the essence of belongingness if he didn’t give in to those extravagant things as what his so-called “friends” want him to do. But reasons are always

made by the beholder. Choices are chances. It is either a chance to change or a chance to fail.

Psalms 3:6-7 implicates that “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise on your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil.” It is obviously pertaining to the guidance of our Lord which He only wants us to lift up and offer all the things we are doing or going to do unto Him for it is right. In return, He will guide us to the right path of success and triumph.

Moreover, the decisionmaking is always on our hands.

We have our free-will. We must better use it in the right and productive way because it is pleasurable in God’s heart.

Just like Romans 12:21 entails “Do not overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” This shows that even we have the final decision, let our Father give

Yes, those things I mentioned above are bad influences in our ever changing world. You might ask a question - “Is it really possible to stand against those influences?

According to 2 Timothy 2:22 in the Bible, “Free from the desires incidental to youth, but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, along with those who call upon the Lord out of a clean heart”.

In other words we must not be bothered by influences. In order to live in a good standard, we must reject vicious desires. Just like a hook in a fishing rod that may attract a fish, our wicked thoughts and desires – when not diminished, may lead us to begin an unprincipled life.

On the other hand, revised standards may benefit us in many ways. As a college student, it is hard to achieve a high grade in the current curriculum, especially if that is the subject you really hate. Due to the fact that sometimes the whole class fails to attain the passing scores in exams, our teacher revises the

grading system which will allow us to get a higher score compared to the standard computation.

Overweight people sometimes take a diet in which they revise the way they eat in order to lose weight.

Of course, parents play a vital role in this issue. Their supervision and guidance is very important in telling their children which is good or bad. But the problem sometimes rises when the parent states to “Do what I say, not what I do”. Maybe you are thinking what it means. Well, the thing that I want to tell is when a parent told his son or daughter to do his advises, but he/she cannot do it himself/herself. For instance, when someone advised you not to smoke, you might not follow if he is a known smoker.

It is much easier to cross a bridge than to make your own bridge. Standards are already made by our God to be followed, do not create your own standards. Whether the culture is changing, or too many influences are coming, live in the way that Continue to pg. 9

“Ang daang matuwid.”

I

t is the well-known typical expression of PNOY during his candidacy last 2010 elections. He always encourages everyone to join him in his journey of less corrupt and more peaceful and progressive Philippines.

However, the question is how are we going to travel the straight path without crooked and rough experiences? Does this “tuwid na daan” a real application of life, most especially the youth of today’s generation?

Some negative impediments has a vigorous and massive factor to the young people. Why? It is because of the advancement of technology.

Some are getting along with people they barely know in social media sites that in the end could lead to spreading of STD. Also, youngsters tended to be attracted most to the trending games that instead of going to

school are playing online games in internet cafes.

As the Psalms 32:8 stated “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will guide you with My eye.”

Apparently, the passage refers to the guidance and love that the light of the Lord shed upon us. He showed us His authority that in our every move and every way of living, He is watching us and He is reminding us to act as a Christian-oriented people.

Youngsters, remember that the “Eye of God” is always there. He is just like a strict parent. But He is eventually leading us to the right track of our journey.

In this modern world, many of the present generation people are being misguided and had traveled things that were far beyond at their age. There are reasons for these phases of a young’s life. One reason is peer pressure and bad influence

As we realize these things completely, why don’t we make a change in ourselves? To be near with God is not a tough task. Why don’t we use this technology in scattering his words and to garnered knowledge unto his wisdom? For it is state in Hebrews 3:15 “While it is said, today if you will hear his voice harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.” Referring to us, that we should listen and apply his words in our life for it will bring us a satisfying and harmonious living. God is forever. ***

As a future educator, I find this step of the government as a great leap for the Filipino nation. But now, the young people will be able to attain education suitable to compete globally. Though there are minor flaws in this innovation, still, the fact that the government exerted effort to implement it is already commendable. In due time, these flaws will be met. I believe.

To compete globally, he also stated the success of the programs of TESDA. For the health sector, he stated the continuous growth of the membership to Philhealth. In addition, he informed the nation on the status of Bangsamoro Basic Law. Receiving a loud applause was the president’s interest in passing the Anti-Dynasty Bill.

Truly, the president has done things that are to be proud of. He planted a seed that the people hoped to grow and bear progress. He had initiated the country’s inevitable rise, although a commendable initiative is not an assurance to a commendable result. So I hope and pray for the next leader to work better or if not continue what the president has done. Again, President Aquino have done much, but should the people expect more or was it his last hurrah?***

I, myself admit that I can’t vote as of now for the one who I think deserved to be on the position. As I see this person, and what he has done, I think he really has the power to control his countrymen. Anyways, we all have the factors that we consider on giving our hands to someone. Every one of us wishes that chosen one will completely let our country grow more and more. Let those bad issues be lessened and solved especially when it comes to corruption and natural disaster. For the next administration, I wish that you will do all your responsibilities and works. Before making a decision, please consider your countrymen and how will this affects us. As new governing administration, do all your promises that you made when you are campaigning. Please be true to the stances and ideas you had when you’re not already on that position. Though we all know that no one’s is perfect especially when it comes to leader, we are going to serve you as long as you serve for us. We need change. Filipinos want change. love. Love has been an endless topic to discuss. Actually, definitions of it cannot be counted, making love an indefinite abstract.

The bible says love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. The movie Mouline Rouge emphasized that the greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return. Even Barbra Streisand sings the statement) love is soft as an easy chair and love is fresh as the morning air with her angelic voice.

Truly, love is everywhere. It is inevitable, it stays until the end of time. But how do people

Bukod sa sinabawang gulay, paano mo masasabing makulay ang buhay? Sa mga ngumingiting bulaklak, nagliliparang paru-paro, nagsasayawang mga puno sabay sa humuhuning mga ibon, sa panahong naabot mo na ang iyong pangarap habang kasama mo ang mga mahal mo sa buhay, doon mo siguro masasabing makulay ang buhay. Pero alam mo, mas magiging makulay ang buhay kung marunong kang magbigay ng kulay sa mundong ito.

Makapagbibigay ka ng kulay sa mundo kung mahal mo ang ginagawa mo at nakapagbibigay ka ng ligaya at inspirasyon sa ibang tao. Sa hindi kalayuan, sa Sta. Cruz, Laguna, may nakilala ako na nagbibigay ng kulay sa mundong ito sa pamamagitan ng pagbibigay buhay sa bawat canvas na blanko. Bata, kalikasan, tao at lahat ng magaganda sa mundong ito ay makikita sa mga gawa niya. Titingnan mo pa lamang ang mga likha niya, mapapanganga ka na talaga at tila ba gugustuhin mo nang iuwi ang mga ito.

Nagsimula lang siya sa krayola noon at inamin niya na masgusto niya pang maglaro ng teks at jolen sa labas. Noong una ay hindi naman siya interasado sa pagpipinta pero noong labing-pitong gulang siya, nag-work shop siya sa Studio Art 2000 sa Sto. Angel, Sta. Cruz, Laguna at doon na nga nagtuluy-tuloy ang pagbibigay kulay niya sa canvas na blanko at mapanglaw na mundong ito. Nadiskubre siya at lalo pang umusbong ang kaunlaran niya nang maisama siya sa exhibit sa Macau na puro European ang kasali at siya lamang ang kaunaha-unahang Asian na nakilahok doon. Matapos noon ay sunud-sunod na ang napapanalunan niyang paligsahan sa iba’t-ibang bansa at sunud-sunod na ang parangal niyang natatanggap.

Kabilang na rito ang pagkapanalo niya sa Abilympics 2000 na ginanap sa Subic. Dahil sa pagkapanalo niya roon ay nakilahok at nagkaroon ng Outstanding Performance siya na ginanap naman sa Czech Republic.

Siya rin ay isa sampung namumukod tanging mamamayan noong 2002 ng Sta. Cruz, Laguna dahil sa kanyang mahalaga at kapuri-puring ginawa para sa mamamayan. Noong 2006 naman ay ginawaran siya bilang Pinakamaningning na Alagad ng Sining ng lalawigan ng Laguna.

Aking tinutukoy ay ang bunga ng pagmamahalan nina Marina Coralejo at Arturo delos Reyes na siyang ipananganak noong Setyembre 22, 1976. Ngayon ay masayang naninirahan kasama ang asawa na si Marian Salvador at mga anak na sina Elizabeth Marie at Isabella Jane sa Sta. Cruz, Laguna. Pero ano nga ba ang tunay na nakamamangha sa mga likha niya na tunay na nakapagbibigay ng inspirasyon at ligaya sa maraming tao? Siya ay kabilang sa Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artist, isa siya sa lima na Pilipino na kabilang doon. Siya ay pintor na kakaiba, isang tao na tunay na kahanga-hanga at namumukod tangi. Ang aking tinutukoy kasi ay ipinanganak na paraplegic—isang kondisyon kung saan paralisado na ang ilang bahagi ng katawan. Pero sa kabila ng lahat ng iyon,sa kabila ng kawalan niya ng dalawang kamay, nabibigyan niya pa rin ng kulay ang canvas na blanko sa pamamagitan ng pagpinta gamit ang kanyang mga paa. Siguro’y madalas na natin itong marinig pero hindi talaga hadlang ang anumang kapansanan upang maabot ang tagumpay. Ang paglalapat ng kulay ay isang paraan ng pagbibigay ng emosyon sa bawat likha, katulad ng pagbibigay ng ngiti sa mga labi. Hindi kumpleto ang likha kung wala itong kulay, katulad ng buhay hindi kumpleto kung wala emosyon. Iyang pinatunayan ni David Fernando Santos Rodriguez, 55 taong gulang na mag-aaral ng Laguna State Polytechnic University upang makapagtapos ng kursong Bachelor of Secondary education Major in Mapeh.

Isang pintor, atleta, gymnast, pastor at magiging guro sa hinaharap, iyan ang mga bagay na kanyang pinagkakaabalahan.

Noong una ay gusto lamang niyang magkaroon ng titulo, makapagtapos at makapagtrabaho ngunit dahil nga ang kanyang kurso ay nakatuon sa mga kabataan at pagtuturo, nakita niya ito bilang isang sangkap sa pagpapaunlad ng kaalaman ng mga bata na kabilang sa kanyang ministeryo at paraan upang makatulong at makapagbahagi ng kaalaman.

Mahilig siyang magpinta, katunayan niyan ay nagtuturo rin siya ng mga bata tuwing bakasyon. “Art express yourself and feelings the way that you can communicate your insights and idea.” Iyan ang pakahulugan niya sa sining. Bagaman hindi nabigyan ng pagkakaton na magkaanak dahil sa ilang suliranin ay hindi naman siya nakakaramdam ng pangungulila dahil para sa kanya ay kalooban ito ng Diyos upang makasalamuha niya ang mas madaming bata, makatulong at mapaunlad sila. “Tinatawag nila akong tito at ang turing ko naman sa kanila ay anak kaya pakiramdam ko ay anak ko na talaga sila sapagkat ang iba sa kanila ay wala talagang itinuturing na ama.” Paliwanag niya. Sarili niyang desisyon ang pagtulong. Hindi ito dahil sa pamahalaan o sa institusyon, mula rin sa sariling pera niya ang kanyang ginagamit na pampaaral sa mga batang iyon.

Dapat siyang hangaan sapagkat may layunin siyang ipinta ang magagandang magaganap sa buhay ng mga kabataan, iginuguhit niya ang kanilang mga gabay sa pag-unlad, binibigyan niya ng pundasyon ang kanilang hinaharap at patuloy na binibigyang kulay ito. Ginawa niyang obra maestra ang buhay ng iba, ang makita silang nagtatagumpay ay isang napakalaking tagumpay din para sa kanya. They say life is beautiful, everything it has and everything it will offer, it is said that it’s undeniably perfect. But since the universe will not give us the convenience that we want and the universe as we all know, loves to joke a lot, it’s hard to say that life is really beautiful. Well, you know hearts can be broken down into pieces, trust can be vanished, decisions can be regrets and dreams? Dreams in life can be shattered.

In short, even though life is “beautiful” it has also its hideous sides, and only some

is on the former side and many are still on the latter. The sad part on this side is waking up every day, every morning with a life that you never dreamt of having and the one that you never thought of wanting becomes your reality. And what if the universe sets another twist? What if the

Other people might not understand the depth of the feeling you had for your beloved companion and just say grieving is inappropriate for someone who lost “just a pet.” Don’t allow anyone to tell you that it’s insane or overly sentimental to grieve.

Many people consider pets as a family member due to the bond that was created by the owner who spent time to his or her pet. And when they die you will feel a significant, even traumatic loss. The intensity of pain depends according to duration of the pet to the family, the age of the pet and the circumstances of their death. Generally speaking the more significant the loss, the

Attempting to convince the child by telling him that the pet ran away could make the child to expect that the pet will return and feel betrayed after realizing the truth. Express your own grief to a child and tell him everything will be alright to help him work out his feelings.

It also can be hard for adults and those who live alone, pet loss may make them feel a loss of purpose and total emptiness. Pet’s death may also trigger painful memories mostly if it is associated with loss. They can seek help through friends and family care or by calling a petloss hotline for proper distribution of tips.

Moreover, inmates who are living behind bars already have a “barrier” to live. They have a barrier on achieving the deficiency and growth needs to satisfy themselves because they are already locked in a place that reminds of the “sin” they made. They are already caged in to a world wherein they are already given the prejudice that they are “bad,” forgetting that inmates are “humans” who has dignity and respect that must be valued. They already have a barrier to reach the higher strata of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

Those barriers already blocked them to grow, but despite the problems brought by incarceration like lack of facilities, food and water, we, as a society, should learn to look deeper on the soul and heart of inmates, to help maintain their self-worth as humans. But still, we Filipinos know nothing about them because we’re busy thinking that they are “bad. We’re elusively treating them in inhumane manner as well as thinking that the government is the only

responsible for those inmates.

Lastly, admit it or not, our care for them is too little because we’re too busy living for our own.

Prisoners are human beings. We should not forget that they have the rights to be given basic needs and attentions.

Although they had committed heinous crimes in the past, we must bear in mind that we should value others like how we value ourselves. Maybe, you won’t agree on what I’m saying for inmates are “sinners” but did you ask yourself once in a while, that you are also a sinner?

You also cheat and lie.

We are not perfect. We’re just like those who are incarcerated people; the only difference is that they have a “barrier.” So let’s help them even in simplest ways, lending a hand can alleviate the suffering of the forgotten ones from this prejudice society.

As Nelson Mandela said before, “No one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.” ***

Coping With Grief Due to Pet Loss try to maintain a normal routine because the other surviving pets can also experience loss when a pet dies. It will not only benefit the remaining pets but also help you elevate your outlook too. While grief is your personal experience, you don’t need to face it all by yourself.

Fifth, there’s no good in hiding our true self. Showing the true colors is what others want in one person than showing a “fake” one. So, just be yourself.

We should give time and enough focus to change ourselves so we can turn our negative traits into a positive one. Who knows? Maybe, we’ll be an inspiration to those people who has a bad attitude or to the most hopeless one. In short, we changed not only for ourselves

but also for the society, to be an inspiration to many people.

Furthermore, it also means to fight for every breath to survive as well as to reach the happiness that we desire in our lives.

Today, we need to accept the fact that people are very judgmental and very hard to understand on what they want in life. They say words more hurtful than a dagger cut through the skin, words worse than getting stabbed at the heart. So at some point, we may feel that we’re tortured and feel like a loser in this game of life.

But one of the quotation that is always in my mind is “Never let anyone dull your sparkle!” So always remember that we have brain that thinks and heart that decides, so we should know every step in building confidence for “Confidence” is one of the very important ingredients in our lives to make a difference. ***

Ito ang lugar na tinatampok ang isang butihing babaeng may malaking impluwensya sa pagkakatuklas at liderato ng bayang pinagpala sa saganang ani ng palay, niyog, lanzones at halamang ugat. Siya ay walang iba kung hindi si Ana Kalang na nagsilbing huwaran sa mga mamamayan ng bayang matatagpuan sa paananan ng Bundok Cristobal at Bundok Banahaw. Ito ang bayan ng Nagcarlan, ang sinasabing Vegetable Basket ng Laguna.

Buti pa Alamat, may puno’t dulo eh Tayo?

Isa sa mga pagkakakilanlan ng isang bayan ay ang mismong pangalan nito, kaya naman saan nga ba nagmula ang pangalang Nagcarlan?

May isang kwentong bayan na talagang kumalat noon at hindi maikakailang ito ay may kaugnayan sa pagsupil ng mga EspaĂąol sa ating bayan. Ang mga mamamayan daw noon sa Nagcarlan ay naninirahang mapayapa subalit nang pumutok ang balitang nariyan na sa lawa ang mga taong banyaga na may mga dalang baril agad nilang dinala ang mga babae, bata at ilang matatanda sa ligtas na lugar sa tinatatawag nila noong labak region. Sa katunayan walang ganoong puwersa ang mga tao laban sa mga armadong dayuhan kasama ang mga Pilipinong scouts kaya nang magpaputok sa ere ang mga dayuhan ay silang Nagkanlong sa matataas na damong cogon sa Ilog Talahibing. Sinabi ng mga kasamang scouts ang k anilang ginawa kaya naman tinagurian ang lugar na Nagkanlong hanggang sa naglaon ay naging Nagcarlan.

Ang isa pang kwento ay tungkol naman sa dakilang babaeng nabanggit ko sa unang bahagi na si Ana Kalang. Si Ana Kalang ang siyang nakatuklas at nagtatag ng Nagcarlan. Siya ay maitututring na pinakamayamang babae noong panahon niya na nagtataglay ng mga ari-arian patungo sa bayan. Kilala siya sa pagdadala ng tungkod at salakot. Naghandog si Ana Kalang ng malaking bahagi sa pagpapatayo ng unang Katolikong simbahan. Noong taong 1752, wala pa rin pangalan ang bayan kaya bilang paggalang kay Ana Kalang ay tinagurian ang bayan na (Nagkarlang) Nagcarlang.

ng Nagcarlan ay kilala rin sa magandang istruktura ng simbahan nito at ang tinaguriang Underground Cemetery. Katunayan ilang mga palabas na ang naggawang kunan sa mga antigong lugar na ito.

Sa pagsama ko sa aking mga katoto sa paglalakbay sa aking tinubuang bayan ay nadatnan ko sila sa Underground Cemetery na kung saan magsisimula ang parade sa Ika-29 na pagdiriwang ng Ana Kalang Festival. Inaya ko silang bumaba sa libingan at doon namin naramdman ang lamig ng pakiramdam at aliwalas. Hindi lamang ito basta libingan ng mga namayapa. Bagaman nagtataglay rin ito ng isang papel sa kasaysayan. Ang Libingan sa Ilalim ng Lupa ay ipinatayo ni Padre Vicente Velloc. Taglay ang isang pabilog na disenyo at isang kapilya na nakaratay sa sentong parte. Ang sabi pa nga ay dito raw nagkakroon ng pagpupulong ang mga rebulusyonaryong katipunero at isa na nga ay ang pagpaplano ukol sa Kasunduan sa Biak-na-Bato.

Samantala, nang mapadpad naman kami sa simbahan ng Nagcarlan o kilala ring St. Bartholomew Parish Church, sila ba ay waring namangha sa anyo at dibuho nito. Halata mang sinauna ay di maikakaila ang hirap at pagod ng mga Nagcarlangin sa pagtatayo nito. Ito ay unang naitayo sa termino ni Padre Tomas de Miranda noong 1583 na siya namang taon ng pagsibol ng bayan. Sa patuloy ng mga di inaasahang kalamidad ang simbahan ay ilang beses ng naipaggawa at sa huli ay naipasaayos muli ni Padre Veloc sa pagpapalit ng lahat sa batong anyo nito.

Dalawang araw tuwing Agosto nagdiriwang ng pista ang Nagcarlan, ang pista ni San Bartolome at San Diego de Alcala (Agosto 24-25). Dinarayo rin ang bayan ng mga deboto mula sa Batangas.

Tuwing Mahal na Araw, isa pang dinarayo ng mga tao maging sa kalapit bayan ay ang kapilya ni San Jose, ang tumayong Ama ni Hesus. Ito ay matatagpuan sa Barangay Sinipian.

Kaalinsabay pa nito ay ang saganang kakanin na mabibili sa tabi ng kapilya gaya ng sinukmani, butse, karyoka, galang-galang, putong pikpik, puto pao, bibingka at iba pa.

ng Nagcarlan ay isa sa pinakamatandang bayan sa buong Pilipinas na natitatag noong 1583. Ang mamamayan noon ay namumuhay ng simple alinsunod sa mga dating gawi sa pulitika at katayuan sa lipunan mula datu hanggang alipin. Dahil sa mga ekspidisyong naganap noong ika-16 na siglo natunton ang bayang ito sa pamamagitan ng rutang Nagcarlan – Pila na bumagtas sa katubigan patungong bayan. Sa pagdating ng mga Español hindi sila tinanggap ng maluwag ni Tomalar, ang pinuno ng Baryo Alibumbungan. Samantala ay nagtungo na lamang ang mga dayuhan kay Gat Tayao (Gat Tayaw), pinuno ng bayan ng Liliw. Agad namang nakiusap si Gat Tayao kay Salcedo, pinuno ng mga dayuhan na patawarin si Tomalar at manapa’y pinagtipon ang mga mamamayan ng bayan upang binyagan sa Katolikong paniniwala.

Nabago ang ilang sistema ng pamunuan simula noon at nagkaroon ng mga tinatawag na cabeza de barangay. Sa paglaon ay dumami ang mga pamilya’t mamamayan ng bayan na nagdulot ng pagkakaroon ng 48 na barangay sa buong bayan noong 1853. Kalimitang ngalan ng mga barangay ay isinunod sa mga ngalan ng Santo.

Tulad ng ibang Pilipino ang naturang bayan ay nakipaglaban rin sa pagtaboy ng mga Kastila sa ating bansa. Ito ay sa kadahilanang hindi pantay ang pagtingin sa mga Pilipino at Español. Gayundin, ang labis na pagtatrabaho. Naging malaking bahagi ng rebolusyon si Tomas Virey na isang colonel sa ilalim ni Heneral Miguel Malvar at siya ring nakasaksi ng Kasunduan sa Biak-na-Bato.

Noong nanakop ang mga Amerikano, nagkaroon ng pagbabagong politikal sa bayan. Naging unang municipal presidents (punong bayan ngayon)sina Romualdo Vita, Juan Velasco at Leonardo Lucido noong 1901.

Nagkaroon na rin ng kasarinlan ang Barrio Pauli (Bayan ng Rizal) noong Enero 1, 1919 at naapahiwalay ang ilang bahagi ng Calumpang naging sakop na ng Liliw.

Sa patuloy ng pamahalaan sa ilalaim ng Jones Law, naihalal bilang Presidente Municipal si Nemesio Esmilla noong Hunyo 3, 1919. Nanalo si Ma Menie dahil sa kanyang matibay na pakikisama sa mga mamamayan sa loob ng 12 taon na siyang nakapag patayo ng plaza na alay kay Rizal.

Sa pagpasok ng pananakop ng mga Hapon at World War II, ang Nagcarlan ay nakapagtatag ng guerilla movement na umabot sa 430 matapos ang pagkabagsak ng Bataan. Ang bayan ang unang nagtatag ng Laguna Division Of the Fil-Am Irregular troop.

Matapos ang World War II, naging sunod sunod ang pagbabagong lokal ng bayan. Datapwat may mga kinkaharap ay napagtagumpayan ng bayan ang patuloy na paggunita sa mga gawaing pampaunlad sa bayan.

Nakatulong ang nagdaang Martial Law noong 70’s sa pagiging progresibo at disiplinado ng mga mamamayan na nakatulong naman sa pag-usbong nito sa bagong Republika.

ami ay naglakadlakad upang matunghayan ang grand parade ng bayan at nakarating kami sa palengke. Dito sa palengke ay mapapansin ang hitik na hitik na gulayan. Masagana ang hometown ko sa pag-ani ng iba’t ibang klase ng gulay dahil angkop ang topograpiya nito sa pag-aalaga at pagpaparami ng gulay. Sa katunayan ay mayroon ng ginagamit na cable car sa pagbababa ng gulay mula sa mataas na bahagi ng bayan sa Barangay Bukal. Umaani rin ang bayan ng palay tuwing Abril sa mga baryo ng Banilad, Palayan at Maiit. Gayundin ang niyog na masagana sa bayan. Tuwing sasapit ang bandang Setyembre at Oktubre dito na naghihintay ang mga maghahakot ng trabaho dahil ito ay panahon ng rambutan at lansones.

Natunghayan din ng aking mga kabaro ang iba’t ibang pasalubong at pagkain, magmula sa mga kendi,meat products at tinapay. Kung inyong lilimiin, bukod sa paghahalaman ang paggawa ng kendi at iba pang delicacies ay pangunahing hanapbuhay ng mga mamamayan ng Nagcarlan. Karaniwang dinarayong pasalubong sa Nagcarlan ay espasol, ube halaya, leche flan at puto masa. Nahihimlay ang mga gawaan nito sa Barangay Taytay at Malaya. Samantala, ang mga bakery ay matatagpuan din sa Barangay Malaya at Yukos. Kung sa paggawa naman ng masasarap na ham, longganisa, bacon, tocino at tapa, hindi pahuhuli ang Barangay Banago sa produksyon ng meat products. Dito nakadestino ang tatlo sa paggawaan ng mga prosesong karne ang Macos, Joshua at Marisha’s Meat Proucts.

yan! Sa sobrang init ng aming paglalakbay dinala ko ang aking mga kasamahan sa Talahebeng (Talahibing), ilog na kahanay ng Real Resort sa may papuntang Liliw. Ang Real Resort ay pagmamay-ari na ng lokal na pamahalaan. Bukod sa Real, marami pa ang mga resort na matatagpuan sa Nagcarlan. Ilan sa mga ito ay ang Villa Sylvia, Villa Gregoria, Royo’s Resort, Villa Sotoya, Villa Martha, Green Nature, Glenda’s Resort, Twin Stone Resort at ang pinakabagong Nagcarlan Forest Resort na dinayo talaga ng iba’t ibang personalidad noong nakaraang Mahal na Araw. Bagaman malamig ang tubig na nagmumula sa mga bukal ay dinarayo ito lalo’t higit sa lahat ay tuwing summer. Kaya naman usap-usapan rin ang potensyal na pagiging resort capital nito sa Laguna.

Kung gusto niyo namang makalibre pasyal sa isa sa pitong lawa ng San Pablo ay may isang lawa na sakop ang Nagcarlan na tinaguriang Yambo Lake. Hitik rin sa bayan ang pagpapala ng kalikasan ng tatlong falls. Pangunahing talon ay ang Bunga Falls na kilala rin sa natural nitong anyo na twin falls. Kung pagmamasdan ang twin falls wari bang ito ay nagbibigay imahe sa isang mukha ng babae na sinasabing tagapagbantay ng talon. Ang dalawa pang falls ay ang Sagilala at Lagulo na bagong diskubre lamang nitong nakaraang dalawang taon.

sa sa tradisyon ng bayan ay ang pagsasagawa ng taunang selebrasyon ng Ana Kalang Festival bilang handog sa masaganang ani ng bayan mula sa nagbuhat na taon. Ito ang pinakaunang Festival na isinagawa sa Laguna noong 1987 sa pamumuno ni Hon.Demetrio Comendador. Ang orihinal na pagdiriwang nito ay tuwing Oktubre dahil sa masaganang ani ng lanzones kaya ang unang tawag dito ay Lanzones Festival. Isang matinding dahilan ay ang pagkakaroon ng bagyo noong 1996 na sumira sa taniman ng lanzones kaya pinalitan ito sa kasalukuyang ngalan.

Dahil sa mga pabago-bagong panahon at bilang handog sa kabataan, nang taong 2010 inilipat ang festival sa buwan ng Abril dahil sa tag-ulang nararanasan tuwing Oktubre. Isa pa ring dahilaan ay pagkakaroon ng komplikasyon sa oras ng mga sumasaling mag-aaral gaya ng mga binibini sa patimpalak na Binibining Ana Kalang. Inilunsad din noon ang bagong pangalan ng festival na Kalang-kalang Festival.

Sa pagpapatuloy ng tradisyon muling ibinalik ang pangalan sa Ana Kalang Festival. Buong bayan ay nakikiisa sa mga paligsahan sa Arkotekto, Bihis Ana Kalang, Kalang-kalang making, Bihis Kalang-Kalang, Street Dancing, Battle of the Bands, PinaKALANG, Musik Birit, Igkas Tekno at iba pa na siya lamang nagpapalipalitang paligsahan taun-taon.

SCHOLARS 101: A Bridge to Community Service

Expenses, tuition, projects and theses are those things that a college student must comply in order to graduate and find a greener pasture. However, struggling towards the zenith of success isn’t that easy.

One way or another, a person needs to have support in moral aspects and in practical view; students need financial support. Such avenue to achieve this aspect is through application for scholarship.

Laguna State Polytechnic University, as a governmentbased Higher Education Institution, provides and offers different scholarships such as Athletic Scholarship for the SCUAA Qualifiers and Abhinaya Cultural and Literary Arts (ACLA). Also, LSPU gives some discounts to those students who attain high general weighted average in a semester or those students who are on the Dean’s List. LSPU also entertains and accepts external help from some private and public firms like the Caliraya Butocan Kalayaan (CBK) plant scholarship, Tulong Dunong Program of Commission on Higher Education (CHED) hereby possible by the house representatives, Department of Science and Technology Scholarship, Iskolar ng Laguna thru Governor Ramil L. Hernandez and Municipality Scholars by the support of each municipal leader.

On the other hand, scholarship grantees must maintain their grades as scholars and return the service in participating in such extension programs.

DOST Scholars – Scholars of DOST share and impart their time and knowledge to those high school students who aspire to continue tertiary education with the same grant of financial support especially those who are willing to take the DOST Scholar Examination.

CBK Scholars – A private hydroelectric plant in the 4th district

of Laguna providing the grantees sufficient needs whereas grantees return back their help as each of them participates in programs such as tree-planting and Mentoring the mentors program-workshop.

Tulong Dunong Program (CHED) – By means of the Laguna District 4 House Representative Benjamin Agarao financial support to most of the students of LSPU-SCC and in return scholars had established TAYO na Organization wherein scholars are chosen to be student leaders and will be part of every activities in line with Cong. Agarao’s programs. The said group of scholarship grantees also conducts Nutri Camp a feeding program for those malnourish youngsters of District 4.

Municipality Scholars – In Pila, a neighboring town of Sta. Cruz by means of the aids of Hon.Wilfredo M. Quiat, Municipal Mayor, grants where given to some chosen students of LSPU-SCC supporting them in their studies and additionally, giving back to the assistance, scholars are being part of clean up drive and assistants and in some programs of the municipality such as Fun Run and Pila Day.

Schooling is not easy especially for scholars because they are expected to maintain high grades for the entire years of their studying but what is great about it is the fact that scholars are independent enough to help the community without hesitation. ***

The University never forgets to play its part on the development of the community. In fact, this duty is embedded in its mission and vision staements. LSPU has its various extension program that aims to reach out for the needs of the Lagunenses outside the academic institution.

In fact every college in LSPU conducts outreach programs yearly for the Lagunenses to recognize that the earlier mentioned university doesn’t just exist to provide quality education but also to be a center of development transforming the lives of the people and the community.

The College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) extension program called “Kaalaman ng Kabaranggay” focuses on internalization of community needs for the establishment of sustainable peace and order anchored activities. They are conducting seminar workshops on Child Conflict with the Law Program and also training workshops for Martial Arts and Arnis, First Aid and Water Supply. They also conducts Short Course Training Program and Peace & Order Program. The “Kaalaman ng Kabarangay” outreach program of CCJE is made possible with the partnership with the Philippine National Police (PNP), Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management (PDRRM), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The College of Industrial Technology’s (CIT) “Teknolohiya Ko, Hanapbuhay Mo” program aims to provide a viable linkage and transfer of technology into different field of competencies. They identify the needed technology of a barangay or a certain community and they teach what they need to know about that technology. Since technology is considered as ubiquitous nowadays, they are sharing their knowledge for a community to be able to use and hopefully can get a living from that.

The College of Hospitality Management and Tourism conducted an extension program last semester dubbed ‘Hatid Dunong sa Pagsasanay sa Catering Service’ in Pila, Laguna. They provided skills to mothers and caterers

that lack formal education in hotel and restaurant management. Due to the fact that food sevices is one of the most esieast and more convenient way to earn a living, the said college further provide necessary basic foundation on the aforementioned discipline. They also hold training for tour guides in Pangil Ecopark, one of the natural wonders of our blessed province; Laguna.

Meanwhile, the College of Arts and Sciences conducted their extension program in Pila, Laguna facilitated by students of BS Chemistry 3A. The program includes basic life support & first aid training, DRRM/ Environmental Awareness Seminar, and clean-up drive initiated by BS Psychology 3B and BS Biology 3A. This initiative hopes to address the dificulties being faced by the community during natural disasters and the like.

The College of Computer Studies (CCS) is extending their hands to the out of school children and youth and makes them aware of the latest technology and they also teach them productive things that can be done in a computer aside from gaming. CCS wants everybody to have knowledge in computer technology. The college aims to let the youth understand the positive results of utilizing computers.

The College of Nursing and Allied Health (CONAH) with the partnership with Red Cross conducts a yearly Blood Letting Program that is open for every LSPU student and the blood donated will benefit the Red Cross patients.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CCS) extension program goals to raise awareness to everyone when it comes to environment, basic life support and disaster risk reduction management (DRRM). They conduct trainings regarding Basic Life Support and First Aid and seminar about DRRM and Environmental Awareness.

The College of Teacher Education (CTE) is reaching out their hand for the Mother Nature by yearly having a tree planting activity.

The College of Engineering (COE) aims to train residents from different barangay on “bayong- making” that may serve as their source of living. They also conducts annual gift giving to orphanage and elderlies.

With different colleges having their different extension program hopefully helps LSPU to be really a catalyst in the community.

Fake, Golden and Corn Rice a threat to Philippine Rice Industry I

ncluding rice in our every meal only shows that is very essential part of our daily consumption of food. Typical Filipino family uses rice three times a day and usually can’t complete a day without it.

That’s why having too much issues on rice industry set alarm bells for the entire country like the existence of “fake rice” in Davao City that is eventually spreading throughout the Philippines. This rice is made up of plasticizer or the main material in making plastic

Students including those who came from LSPU-SCC eagerly wait for announcements of class suspensions and constantly check their social networking accounts for update, hoping that their expectation will be met . . . no classes.

Since LSPU-SCC is in the province of Laguna, students from the said institution are included in the thousands of “likers” of the Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez.

His Facebook page is frequently visited by the students of Laguna because of its timely updates about class suspensions.

However, the said institution most of the time doesn’t follow class suspensions disseminated by Gov. Hernandez and still holds regular classes even during the siege of a storm. It is confusing to note that there are two contrasting authorities in that

Let’s take these all from the simple thing that we could do- to protect our natural resources from being abuse and to start caring about what we have. Check the draining abilities of your proposed vegetable bed. Grab a handful of soil and squeeze. Soil that releases water droplets must be amended with 6 inches of both compost and builder's sand tilled into the first 6 inches of soil. If the soil breaks up into clumps in your hand, spread 6 inches of sphagnum moss and till to correct the dry soil. Soil that is malleable in the hand has adequate drainage. Carrot, Potato or Patatas, Cauliflower, Cabbage or Repolyo, Broccoli, Chicharo, Baguio Beans or Green Beans, Umbok or Pechay Baguio, Bell Pepper, Lettuce and Chayote or Sayote are popular vegetables from Baguio City and neighboring mountain areas. These vegetables are collectively called “Gulay Baguio” or “Vegetables of Baguio City”. If you are at Baguio City, don’t hesitate to plant these vegies at your backyard.

“Kean , Kean ….. Villafuerte! ‘Yung anak ng engineer!” sagot ng anak ko.

Bigla akong natigilan . Bigla akong kinabahan . Bumilis ang tibok ng puso ko. Hindi ako makapagsalita o makakibo. Hindi ako makagalaw, ang mukha ko’y tila pumanglaw. Lahat ng tinatago kong sakit at pighati , parang lumabas at naramdaman ko uli . Lahat ng ala-ala na tinatago ko sa kasuluksulukan ng isip ko ay muling bumalik …….na naman!

It was a cold evening when I cleaned my room to clear out waste and to properly store used papers in preparation for the Christmas season when I came across a pile of papers that were stored in an exquisitely designed paper bag. Those were from my ex-girlfriend , written during the first weeks of our relationship, although every letter was different from each other in terms of content, still those have only one message . . . her promise of forever.

With those letters, I have been able to reminisce all that were part of my past. I realized that it is really true that nothing is permanent in this world than change . ONLY IN DICTIONARIES FOREVER DO EXISTS. Just like how those letters were yellowed from age and how she left me after a couple of months, material things do not last forever, and so do relationships.

So we must appreciate what we already have because even us won’t live in this world forever.

BANG-IT-ON-THE-HEAD

Concussions! Yes, you’ve read it right. One of the most common head injury a player could have is this headbanging concussion. The word comes from the Latin word “concutere”, which means “to shake violently.”

NECK-LASHING PAIN

Games which involves head movements could cause a neck-lashing pain called whiplash. Whiplash, also called as cervical hyperextension injury or flexiba-extension neck injury, refers to injury to the soft tissues of the neck including the ligaments, tendons, and muscles.

SHOULDERS-ON-FREEZE

Adhesive capsulitis, also known as “Frozen shoulder” is a painful and disabling disorder of unclear cause in which the shoulder capsule becomes inflamed and stiff, greatly restricting motion and causing chrome pain.

ANKLE FEEL THE PAIN!

The common injury of the athletes that is also called the inversion sprain. The lateral ligaments are overused to the point that they are rolled backwards. Running all day or those who participate in track and field events are the ones who commonly to get this kind of injury. Very painful isn’t it?

FLIPPED BACKWARDS!

Also called the chronic lower back pain, athletes experience this injury especially those who repetitively bends backward or those who likes gymnastics. Since gymnasts move in different direction, they seek to overuse their backs leading to lower back pain.

WATCH ME KNEE-KNEE!

Knee injuries may be classified to two: the acute and chronic injuries. The acute knee injury refers to the sudden and sharp pain while athletes participates out of the blue in the game. On the other hand, chronic knee injury refers to what happens to athletes over time gradually.

Sports would always have its “no pain, no gain” tagline.

Surely, this kinesthetic activity is one source of entertainment, also with a big dose of pain. And for this year’s issue, you’re about to read the painful-and-dreadful injuries that you could gain from sports (on head-to-toe)!

NEED-SOME-SALT

Athletes who tend to lose sodium on their bodies could have hyponatremia, a low concentration of sodium in the blood.

RUN-RUN-RUIN

Excessive stretching of legs could soften the patella (knee cap) which could cause chondromalacia (runner’s knee), a condition wherein the cartilage on the undersurface of knee cap deteriorates.

PAIN-AND-SHOULDER

This injury is now often at athletes nowadays. It is due to the overusing of arm, elbow, and hands. With too much stretching of arms, ligaments inside the body tend to be more rigid and be stiff causing themselves to be damaged.

GEARING GROINS

This injury is like the injury in the ankle, however, the whole leg part up to the thighs are involved. In this manner, the injury is sustained when leg and thigh muscles motor too much in the sports like hurdling, sprinting, and running. Just avoid to move your legs in an inward direction to avoid this ouch-y injury.

TENDONS, BREAK-ON!

Tendons, once inflamed could produce tendonitis. It can cause deep, nagging pain that limits easy, comfortable movements.

JAGS’ PUNTING FOOT. Former Jags head coach Jack Del Rio placed a stump of wood and an axe on his player’s training ground which could have been gash his punter’s thankfully-non-punting foot.

CLIJSTERS’ BLISTERS. Skilled tennis player Kim Clijsters had to cut her stay at the 2011 French Open a little short after injuring her ankle at her nephew’s wedding. Guess that the dancing shoes gave her such blisters.

GRIESE-Y PARTY. Brian Griese, a son of a Hall of Fame football player is remembered a bit more on his “greasy party” acts rather than his slinging skills. During festivities at Davis’ residence, Griese found himself tumbling down the driveway before knocking himself unconscious due to alcohol.

SIMMON’S LOST “GAME”. 1991 NBA Rookie of the Year Award, Lionel Simmons lost a chance of playing a game due to tendinitis. Guess what gave him such injury? Playing too much Nintendo Games.

PITCHES FOR FINLEY. Chuck Finley, a former pitcher missed a game after receiving several scars when he was physically attacked by his obviously-insane wife, Whitesnake model Tawny Kitaen. Guess that the Finley’s received his oh-so-blowing pitches.

BIG BITES-GILES. Brian Giles, being a member of Cleveland Indians, was overconfident of his skills as a player of the said team. Unknowingly, while he was straying at the bleachers amidst of the game, he was bitten by a spider several times! He needed almost dozen shots of antibiotics to recover. Has he still his confidence around those fang-y spider?

FREROTTES-BUTTS WALL. Gus Frerottes, a young football player, was given an option inside the game if he would spike the ball or do a leap in the crowd. Amazingly, he chose none and rammed the nearest wall. He pretty much chose to be with the wall. With this so-called incident, he received a head injury and sprain in the neck.

SOSA SNEEZER. We’ve almost thought that sneezing is one involuntary moment that is very harmless to athletes but not with Sammy Sosa, a baseball slugger. Before the game, he sneezed twice and you know what happened? He had a sharp sprain at the back causing him to be unable to play and replacing him inside the arena.

JUMPED FOR JOY. Bill Gramatica, a football player in the Arizona Cardinals, suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament. Upon winning, he jumped and raised on fist up high and landed awkwardly and suffered.

The “no pain, no gain” tagline within sports life doesn’t really to have the way it has to be. We have our own way to live the sports we love and like. Just don’t forget to take extra care in everything that you do to avoid getting pained all-around!

PERSONALITY SKETCH

He is a man who shines on the dance floor wherever he goes because of his dazzling moves and outrageous routines with his monotonous word “HUH” to express emotions. This is Mr. Jaymar Dionisio, a 23- year-old alumni athlete of Laguna State Polytechnic University who took up Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and graduated in the year 2012.

Jaymar got his feet on the dance floor and discovered his passion during Physical Education being the representative on their section in culminating activity and after a year he joined in the try-out of their college. Though there are times that people are telling him not to join the competition because he is not that good, he was motivated to train harder until dancing became a hobby to him.

His fame began when he joined a competition in a festival held in Pagsanjan, the place where he lives. Because of his dazzling moves and outrageous routines many people wanted to cheer him but then they don’t know his name so they decided to shout “idol.” Since that day “idol” became his nickname and wherever he went, people will call him that way .

He became the pride of Sta. Cruz campus during his time because he earned several awards in his field during intramurals, inter-campus and even in PASUC Olympics. He is very great dancer because he earned several awards like 2nd place dance sport competition LSPU intramurals 2011, champion dance sport competition inter campus 2011, semi-finalist PASUC Olympics 2012. In addition to that, he earned several awards outside the campus in several competition and those are Quezon City Geraldine Darvin dance challenge held at camp Aguinaldo 1st place pre-novice Latin category, 2nd place novice Latin category , 2nd place open Latin 3 dance , 2nd place teacher student ,3rd place inter collegiate 3 dance Latin. In Ateneo dance sport competition at Meralco Theater he and his partner got 5th place inter collegiate , 7th place 3 dance latin open and Philippine National Games semi-finalist.

THE

Dance sports s eems to be more challenging for him because the steps they need to perform is written in the book which means that there are rules and regulations in performing that steps. This is his way in expressing feelings, because even he is sad or happy, he can share his feelings to his audience. This sports develop him a lot, not only physical but also emotional together with discipline during the practice.

GAME

Aside from tapping his feet on the dance floor, Jaymar also see himself holding make-up, designing costume and specially teaching and sharing knowledge to others. Even he can’t join the contest because of being injured, he is now focusing on teaching new athletes of new generation. He is now a dance instructor in different school including LSPU and SLSU. In fact, he is the trainer of Joshua Nicole Oaferiña and Arlene Enriquez who won gold medal in STRASUC Olympic last 2014. He is also the designer of costumes which the dancers will use in the competition.

Inspired by Sir Cris De Leon and Dr. Liza Bartolome, in Manila, who trained and introduced him in the world of dancing, bring them to triumph. He also had his dance studio where he dancers and helps them to achieve their goal specially in dancing.

As a trainer, he also experiences difficulty but through the mates, he became inspired a lot. “Yung karanasang maipagmamalaki karangalan sa LSPU. Lalo na noong nakamit namin yung kauna-unahang SCUAA Olympics pagdating sa Dance Sport, dahil magiging bahagi paaralan, tapos hangang sa nasundan nitong STRASUC Olympics sa muli kami kasama ang mga tinuruan ko. So as a trainor karangalan na

people around him like friends, family and team ko ay yung makapagbigay ako ng Gold medal ng paaralan sa na iyon ng kasaysayan ng UPLB naging champion yun.” Jaymar added. ***

Cha, as how she called by her friends is a former athlete from University of Santo Thomas who used to play for the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) decided to transfer and find her own path here in Laguna State Polytechnic University. “Kung sa community mas comfortable ako sa LSPU dahil nandito ang mga kaibigan ko at hindi ganun katas ang standard ng mga estudyante. Pero pagdating sa mga benefits mas maganda sa UST . dito sa LSPU hanggang ngayon wala pa din akong scholarship. Sa UST ni rerecruit ka palang nila may mga benefits kana dito wala.” Cha said as she compared the programs of the two universities.

When asked about her reason of moving here in LSPU she said that “Nagdecide ako lumipat sa LSPU dahil hindi ko kaya ang ugali ng trainor ko sa UST. Halos na trauma ako sa mga ginawa niya kung kayat nagkasakit ako at nag decide ako na umalis na sa UST” . Violanta also shared to us her goal in playing for the university “Ang goal ko dito sa LSPU bilang isang varsity ay maibahagi sa iba ang talentong meron ako.” added by the 18 year old pride of Nagcarlan, Laguna.

She said that there is that one guy who discovers her skills in playing the sport when she was in her elementary days. “Teacher siya sa elementaryang pinasukan ko noon.Noel ang pangalan niya hindi ko na maalala kung anung apelyido basta siya ang naka discover na pwede pala akong maging thrower.”

Cha is a very successful athlete on her own field due to her hardworks and perseverance to continue playing her sport. She manages to bag several awards since she started to play in her elementary days for intramurals.

Back in 2010, she got her first victory in Southern Tagalog CALABARZON Athletic Association (STCAA) with her silver and bronze medal finish in shotput and discuss throw event. Her luck in the same sports did not stop as she also grabbed multiple medals in the next three years’. Silver and bronze in 2011, Gold and Silver in 2012 and Gold medal in 2013 resulting to her qualification in the 2013 edition of Palarong Pambansa held here in Laguna.

he also received a total of 19 gold medals and counting from 2010 up to now. She dominates her event in different competition such as: Batang Pinoy, Philippine National Games (PNG), UAAP, and LSPU Inter-Campus Sports fest. After her success during her secondary days, Violanta has been eyed by various universities to play for them “Si Sir.Arnel Ferrera National Player ng Philippine Team ang nakadiscover sa akin noong mga panahong nagttraining sila sa Laguna Sport Complex and then nirecommend niya ako sa coach ng UST.” added by Violanta who has a pre-game ritual of playing music to avoid the nerves before going to the game.

But despite of all the blessings that came to her life, still she said that she has been into many problems and difficulties on her career. “Syempre ang pinaka madalas kong problema jan ay ang time management, kung paano ko ihahandle ng ayos ang pag aaral at paglalaro ko...dagdag pa yung mga injuries na nararanasan ko gaya ng Muscle pain at Back injuries ” as she response. However, she still find the sport as part of her life “Hindi naman ako nahihirapan habang tumatagal mas lalo ko siyang na eenjoy dahil hindi naman ako makakarating sa puntong ito kung hindi ako masaya at hindi ako dedicated sa ginagawa ko”

Charies ended up by acknowledging all of her inspiration especially those who help her to continue to play her sport.. “Inspirasyon ko sa buhay unang una ang pamilya ko dahil kung wala sila wala din ako ngayon.

Pangalawa inspirasyon ko lahat ng problemang kinaharap ko dahil doon naging mas matatag ako sa buhay ko. Si God naging inpirasyon ko siya sa buong buhay ko dahil hindi niya ako pinapabayaan sa bawat chapter ng buhay ko at may isang special na tao sa buhay ko na ngayon ay pinanghuhugutan ko ng lakas ng loob.” ***

ll athletes have their own life struggles and challenges as an individual. Every each of them differs even they have the same sports or even they use the same strategies in winning each game. One might be an athlete at the same time an actor but the other one can be an athlete at the same time a model.

Every athlete has his own life outside the court. They might have the same styles on how they hold every game situation but they always differ on their life struggles. Like in our university, athletes not only focus

ressure is directly proportional to hard work that leads to expected result which is winning. This means that as the pressure increase, the hard work also increase in order to get the outcome. As I’ve said about pressure, it is not all about gas law or any connected in science and it is not all about mathematics that needs to compute several number to understand this column. As an overview, it is all about athlete facing pressure in the game but in all, they achieve their goals.

As I became sports writer, I met athletes in this institution that can be considered as the treasure of the university by gaining several achievements not only in the intercampus but also in the Olympics. While I’m watching advanced game for ball games, I asked a question for one of sports enthusiast who are watching soft ball. Who experienced the pressure on the game? What is the feeling of that athlete which carrying the hope of the whole team? And such other question runs on my mind. Then, his answers open up my mind on how the pressure of an athlete turns into hard work and serve as their motivation during the game. Let me elaborate pressure

on their games and trainings but they also focus on the subject matters and their academics.

Some are taking similar courses but some differs; some are quite excelling on their different subject and some do not.

Being an athlete requires not only the strength of an individual on their particular sports but they must also have the knowledge to manage their time equally outside the court.

An athlete can’t attend his games and even his practice if he was not able to manage his time well.

He might just lose his own career

if he fails to perform it both.

In our country, many amateur and professional athletes wcan be considered knowledgeable enough because despite of their career in the world of sports, they can able to perform their duties also. One good example is our Filipino pride, eight division World champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao who is also a congressman, TV host, coach, businessman, recording artist, basketball player, and an actor. Although he is spending his time with his boxing career, he can still perform his duties and

responsibilities as a father, a son, and as well as the representative of the Sarangani Province.

There are lots of athletes here in our country who we can

that give them courage and hope in order to gain such awards or desired objective.

The first one is pressure from their fans. Athletes often experience pressure from fans who cheer them up to gain hope during the game. It is still fresh on the mind of every Filipino how netizens used #PUSO in

gain score and to finished the game with flying colors. Though they don’t know who are their supporters, they still feel the pressure that there is a Filipino nation who believe in their ability, there is the name they need to treasure as a representative of the country and most of all they want to bag the gold for the country and for those who believe in their talent. Aside from that, in Intramurals every shout of their supporters really makes a big pressure because they actually saw the supporters who are doing their effort to shout and say Orayt, bawi and Puso contributing to the hope in winning.

Next one is the pressure from their coach. The person who are overacting and shouting to their players, that is how we define coach. But actually there are the game planner and decision maker; they are the one who monitor the discipline of the players before, during and after the game. The coach is the one who is always there with players, in winning or losing. I still remember when I was in my childhood days watching Slum Dunk, team Shohuku are afraid to loose every fight because they dedicate their awards to their

coach and to their trainor, Coach Ansay and Hayako. They afraid to waste the plans made together because the only thing that they can offer to them is thank you together with the awards their gained.

Going back to the actual situation in our university, as I observe in the athlete, they are experience pressure in gaining incentives.

Every university provides funds or scholarships for varsity players that can be the pride of the campus in representing in the STRASUC Olympics or even in national competition. As a beginner in the field of sports, many of them wanted to be part of the varsity team because there are scholarships for every athlete who gained awards during the competition and together with experiences in competing with other popular campuses in our country. Those scholarship will be the big help to their study because they will have discount in the tuition fees.

While I’m watching soft ball I see the importance of pitcher in gaining points for the team. I know that every member of the game plays a vital role but this time I noticed that the loss of their opponent is in pitcher’s

finding their weaknesses, and you are also hearing the noise around you that either cheers for you, your team or to your opponents. You will also feel the real joy in winning and the sorrow of losing in playing these sports for real. Unlike playing those on game consoles such as Xbox Kinect™ or Wii™, you face an emotionless computer generated opponent that you can manipulate their playing abilities from easy to hard, and can never be your friend or buddy after a game. Playing true sport can build friendship between players.

Moreover, the feeling and experience of playing the virtual sports is incomparable to the real sports. For instance, imagine that you are on a beach, swimming one Sunday morning.

You can feel the heat of the sun striking your back, the warm water from the beach and you can hear birds chirping around. And now imagine, the same Sunday morning you are sitting at your couch with your game controller, playing a beach swimming game.

Can you honestly say there is no difference between the two?

I don’t think so. The authentic feeling of playing the real sports can’t be found in virtual game. The game developer can make the game’s graphics and resolution to be as high and

detailed as possible, but the sweats you can feel in shooting the basketball will not going to be the same sweat you are going to feel in just touching and pressing some buttons in order to grab a rebound in a virtual basketball

Consider that as part of the game together with winning. Don’t let yourself vanish in pressure, instead use that thing as your stepping stone to standout and shine.

So, without pressure from a fans, coach, incentives, in awards, or in your opponent, the game will not be interesting. Just enjoy a game because it is just the game at all.***

Their computer-generated opponent is not really their rival, but just a material for fun and entertainment.

Sportsmanship has no room for virtual sports.

In addition to that, playing the real sport is an exercise. With body movements and physical strength has a positive effect on our body. We are eliminating the toxic in the form of sweat unlike in virtual sports where every move is can be done with just a price of little swipes. Playing a true sport is a great way in maintaining our body fit and healthy.

People who got engaged on playing the virtual sports before knowing or experiencing the real sports may have a mind setting that a sport is easy to play and defeating your opponent

is as effortless as counting 1-23. But when those people tried to involve with real sports, they realized the reality that the way they play the sports with ease in their android phones or game consoles is not as easy as touching and swiping the screen in the real game where they got actual balls and real opponent.

Playing virtual sports gave us the illusion that everybody can play a sport if they want to, but the truth is, athletes competing and playing in those sports, trained hard and practiced a lot before they got into a level of playing where they at now.

I am not saying that the development virtual sports had not done anything good for us. We are in a world were technology is manifested in everything including sports. And as a student, I may find it difficult to find time to get out and play.

And there are also people who are not blessed with physical abilities and strength to play the real sport, the virtual sports is a great substitute for a while. But for those who are blessed with strength, let us not be satisfied to be just in front of a screen and silently playing in a corner, let us drop our phones and get out once in a while and find your friends to play some sport.***

Exhibiting extraordinary smash, College of Engineering (COE) dominated the badminton tournament in Laguna State Polytechnic University – Santa Cruz Campus’ (LSPU-SCC) annual Sports Fest, held at the Activity Center, Aug. 7.

COE racket masters, Dem Macawili and Aedrian Quidayan showcased extravagant performance to surpassed a twice to beat game against College of Computer Studies (CCS) duo Harvey Macawili and Randol Glorioso. Furthermore, Rikki Vibora and EJ Malicio attained the third rank.

On Singles A Men’s Division, Rodmir Buensadila of COE made his best shot as he was hailed as the champion with a close fight with Francis Frivaldo of CIT, 23-21. John Miguel Dungo from CTE secured the bronze medal in the said tournament.

Another twice to beat fight between CIT smasher Cary Earl Kolimlim and CCJE netter Rex Belli Carasco in the finals of Single B category. The game ended with 21-13 in favor of CIT’s Kolimlim.

On the other hand, Jhun Jhun Pullan captured the bronze medal for COE.

In women’s division, CCJE hooked the gold medal with an outcome of 21-12 through the energetic grip tricks of Princess Cabisidan contradicting her opponent, Darlen Esuerra of CBMA in Single A competition. Meryl Malabanan of CCS won the third place.

These were the words stated by Mr. Kazuyoshi Ishikawa, General Manager of Human Resource and General Affairs Department, Canon Business Machines Philippines, Inc. during his speech as the honorable speaker for the opening program of this year’s Sports Fest held at the Laguna State Polytechnic University-Sta. Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC) Open Grounds, August 26.

In his speech, he stated different aspects that athletes must consider especially when it comes to teamwork. “Teamwork is a must in order for a team to be successful and achieve what they want to achieve.” Aside from that, he also said that everyone should showcase their own skills especially in sports, however, sportsmanship between everyone must always be maintained.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ishikawa was already part of Canon for almost 24 years, 20 years in administration services and five years in public relation. ***

COE dominates the first set, with the score of 21-17 but CCJE snatched the second set by making a great space with the score of 21-10. The game becomes more exciting as both parties sets fire in the court on the latter part of the game.

Both teams tried to make a great defensive moves and attacks just to register a point but it was CCJE who started the last set on a high note. COE were not able to recover on time as the CCJE bags this years’ championship, 15-8. ***

With the theme “LSPU: Aiming High … Flying High…

Living its Passion through Sports” the 3 day Sports Festival was once again geared by the sports coordinator after a month of full pre-intramural games together with the participation of the 9 colleges of the university, held at the Activity Center, Aug. 26.

Headed by the different Tournament Manager’s and some of the Administrative Personnel’s, each department paraded with their respective colors and muses and escorts.

It was Dr. Roberto C. Mirnanda, Campus Director who welcomed all the athletes and coaches.

Meanwhile, an intermission number was performed by the MAPEH Balay Sining Organization immediately followed by the inspirational talk of the University President, Dr. Nestor M. de Vera. Dr. Liza Bartolome, Sports Coordinator of Santa Cruz Campus introduced the guest speaker who currently the General Manager, Human Resource and General Affairs Dept., Canon Business Machine Inc.

In his speech, Mr. Kazuyoshi Ishikawa emphasizes the importance of teamwork in achieving their goals in the competition.

Lastly, the lightning of torch led by Dr. de Vera together with the selected SCC athletes and officials signals the official opening of this years’ Sports Fest. ***

Despite of the blazing heat of the sun, College of Engineering (COE) vigorously prevailed as they reigned at different Track and Field events and gathered most of the medals in the two day running and throwing competition held at the Laguna Sports Complex, Aug. 26-27.

Garnering 13 golds, 4 silvers, and 9 bronzes, COE reigned the different track events where at hand in the said competition. COE victoriously gained most of their medals in Relays, Long Jump, Triple Jump and varieties of meter runs and

field events like Shot Put, Javelin Throw, and Discus Throws both in men’s and women’s division.

In the men’s division, Ulexie Atienza and Kevin Mole bagged the gold medal at the 3000 meter and 5000 meter run respectively. In the field events, still, the COE governs as they triumphed with Dennis Rogel winning the gold medal in Javelin Throw.

Furthermore, the College of Industrial Technology (CIT) upholds second spot with them nipping up 9 golds and 6 silvers or 15 medals in total. CIT felt short to capture first place as

they gave the biggest threat to the championas they were very determined to bagged another Track and Field title from last year. Up on the third spot is the CHMT who gathered a total of 13 medals; 1 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze medals.

Bursting with gutsy heart, CIT’s Torpedo Lugeda bagged 1st place in 100 meter backstroke in men’s category.

On the other hand, Principe top CIT swimmer as he emerged as the 1st place winner in 400 meter freestyle, 200 meter relay, 800 meter freestyle and 200 meters individual medley.

With their 10 gold medal haul, CIT secured their spot on top of the ranking to dethrone last year’s gold medal digger, College of Engineering (COE) who fell a single gold medal to defend their title.

As the heat from the softball continues on the men’s side, College of Engineering (COE) defeated their opponent from the College of Teachers Education (CTE), 13-12 during the final round of this year’s baseball competition held at the LSPU-SCC Soccer Field, August 28.

Both teams start the game and play as if it is their last just to win the game. Both colleges gave their best shot to the crown but COE leave CTE behind by scoring 7-2 respectively on the 1st and 2nd inning of the game. Despite the bad weather and slippery field, Kurtz Obrince, team captain of CTE hits a homerun base and tied up their score with COE, 7-7 on the third inning.

Moreover, COE still managed to threaten CIT after collecting 9 gold medals led by Richardson Reodica, Robin Reyes, John Jan Adol, John Mark Adriano, Ferdie Sumagui and Reymart Dela Cruz who bacame as the stand-out swimmer’s in both single and group events.

Meanwhile, College of Computer Studies (CCS) bagged 5 golds; all came from their lone medallist Anthony Adriano.

Other colleges also bagged some gold medals into their packet. College of Art and Sciences (CAS) and College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) also collected 5 gold medals while College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) added 3 gold to their record.

Winners from different categories will be filtered for the upcoming Intercampus ‘15. ***

The crowd went wild and screams for each point made by their supported team however, the rain interrupted the game as the officials decided to end up the match and resume it on the next day.

The heat of the game does not decreases as CTE seems to bring their luck and gain 5 more consecutive points on the fourth inning to have a total of 12 points. But still COE remained composed and made their score a single point lead over CTE 1312.

CTE, still believe on their luck and strive harder to win the game but no one on each team gain another point until the officials formally ended the game as COE snatches this year’s baseball championship. ***

CAS candidate Jessica Ann Bino mesmerized the judges with her confidence, projection and intellectual answer in the question and answer portion as she was crowned as this years’ most beautiful woman in LSPUSCC.

representative Christopher Napiza was hailed as this year’s Mr. LSPU-SCC grabbing the last year’s title from CAS. Napiza also seized special awards such as Best in Production Attire, Best in Sportswear, wearing his complete basketball uniform; Best in Swimwear showcasing his perfect body and Best in Barong Tagalog with a fashioned white themed barong and black linings on the shoulder and sleeves.

For six consecutive year’s, the College of Engineering (COE) has been undefeated on the general championship as they got their sixth straight title for this year’s Laguna State Polytechnic University Sports Fest, held at the Multi-Purpose Gymnasium and Hall, Aug. 8

Engineering warriors once again showed their supremacy as they gathered a total of 60 points to lead the raise for the top spot of the standings.

COE bagged most of their medals from Athletics, Badminton, Chess, Dance Sports, Lawn Tennis and Swimming.

Next to COE is the third time first runner-up finisher, College of Industrial Technology (CIT) with their 45 points total. CIT captured most of their medals from Basketball, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Athletics, Swimming and Chess.

Garnering a total of 35 points, College of Criminal Justice and Education (CCJE) moved up from last years’ fourth runner up finish as they grabbed the title in Cheerdance, Footbal and Futsal. College of

Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) moved down this year as they fall behind by seven 7 silver medals against the third place finisher. CHMT also gathered a total of 35 points.

Meanwhile, College of Teacher Education (CTE) secured the fifth spot by collecting 33 points, two points behind the third and fourth placer. Moreover, College of Computer Studies (CCS) stayed far behind at sixth spot with their 12 points total collection.

Last three colleges are as follows: College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) with 9 points.

College of Busines Management and Accountancy (CBMA) tallied 7 points and College of Nursing and Allied Health (CONAH) failed to gain even a single point.

Winners from all events will represent the Santa Cruz Main Campus on the forthcoming Univrsity Games on October this year. In the end, COE warriors accepted their sixth straight championship trophy after Dr. Lisa Bartolome, Chairperson, Sports and Development-SCC awarded their medals and trophy. ***

CCJE Pep Squad grabs Cheerdance Competition Title

COE, CIT tops Lawn Tennis

Keeping the fire burning on their side, College of Engineering (COE) and College of Industrial Technology (CIT) grabbed this years’ Lawn Tennis over-all title after dispatching other colleges on their respective matched during the LSPU-SCC Sports Fest held at the Laguna Sports Complex, Aug. 27.

CIT’s lawn tennis player easily brought home 2 gold medals by default coming from John Francis Arillat in Single A men’s category and their Women’s division duo Henecee Dominquez and Angela Mae

After the early withdrawal of entry of some colleges even before the competition started, two remaining colleges collide in this year’s one of the most awaited event of Laguna State Polytechnic University-Santa Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC) Intramurals, the Cheer Dance Competition which open this year’s Sports Fest held in front of the massive crowd at the LSPU-SCC Basketball Court, Aug. 26.

Due to the changes of rules made by the LSPU sports official and lack of dancers in other colleges, it turned out

into a clash between College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) and College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) as they showed what they’ve got in performing their own routine presentation

CHMT Pep Squad, wearing their orange department shirt was first to perform. They fulfilled their amazing dance step with astounding tumblings and back dives. The crowd still got into it though there are some points that they failed to execute their routine but managed to continue their performance up to the end.

Meanwhile, CCJE Pep

Squad executed their stunts with their maroon department shirt. The crowd get livelier as they showed their synchronized dance steps and sequenced routines. They also showed some sexy moves which made everyone awed with bliss and applause. Their powerful movements from start up to the end concluded this year’s Cheer Dance Competition.

In the end, CCJE jumped into victory as they were proclaimed as the new champion during the awarding ceremony last August 28 held at the Activity Center ***
