bout eight months before the most vied game of the people who want power and by now we already know some of the players. It seems that the May 2016 election is really inevitable. The Filipino people will once again appoint those who will initiate holistic improvement. Amongst the positions to be vied for, presidency is the most looked up to. We already have an idea of the possible group of candidates. This may be composed of someone to continue the “matuwid-na-daan,” or by someone who respects the people (ano po?), the one who jumped from being a mayor to being the second to the president or the one who is still a mayor. The people will choose the one having what it takes to bring the Philippines back to the world map but the truth is that the people is looking for the next people to blame. Let’s consider the present president as an example. Pnoy won with landslide vote.s He was the son the Ninoy and Cory, thus, the people thought he was like them as well. Yes, it can be true. He had made a lot for the country, our economy rises (as they say) and a number of programs to end poverty was launched. But still, the Philippines is covered by illegal settlers, people in the metro still suffer to heavy traffics and many are still marginalized. The result, Pnoy is still being blamed. On the other hand, why are some people still wants to run for a government post? Well, there can be a wide array of reasons. One among those can be the fact that they know they are not the only ones to be blamed. The people in power are not the only ones to be blamed. Why are the number of illegal settlers still grow? Maybe because most of them lack perseverance and hardworking personality. Why do people still suffer in heavy traffic? Maybe because people keep on using vehicles for luxury. Why are there marginalized people? Maybe because they do not give importance to education hence they cannot find jobs to make a living. Our path into becoming a first-world country is not yet being paved. Bricks for doing it are still scattered everywhere. People see those bricks, but people also neglect it. We keep on blaming the politicians for not exerting enough effort to make the country better. We always tell that they want power for their own good only. We always think of letting them do the tasks we should be doing. But shouldn’t we blame ourselves, too? The upcoming elections will be another round of the blame game and not only the people who will run for a position are the players. We will also play the game. As how a song goes “Let’s play the blame game… at the end of it you know we both were wrong.” Are you ready? vvv

Harnessing the Power of Me
W
hat gets you out of bed in the morning besides your alarm? It’s been a year ago when I’ve heard this question from a respective speaker during the convention I’ve attended somewhere in Manila. When he asked this question to his audience, people started to think of the answer, of course including me. But it takes time for me to answer this simple question, what do really the reasons why I get out of the bed, go somewhere and do something? Later on that day, he encouraged us to harnessed our own power by striving our own path. With that, I think God let me wake up every day in the morning to do all of my responsibilities and duties. Every day is just an ordinary day for me; I do my stuffs, go to school, hang out sometimes with friends, do my research and live with the people I’ve encountered each day. As I continue my journey, that question always marks in my mind until I asked myself, so what is my main purpose now? I am a person who usually find myself by exploring things which surrounds me. Though, sometimes i am not confident that i did something for change or for the better but i am still proud that with that, i found my purpose in doing things i also love. Well according to John Jones, there are two kinds of purposes. The first one is the purpose of having a result; this is something that exists after the process is stopped, and does not exist until it has stopped. This purpose focuses on the outcome of something you do. Let’s put it in a simpler way, you’re purpose in doing something which requires an extra amount of effort and hard work is to get the best result out of it. When you think that you did your very best, you should have a purpose to look forward on what will happen next. And then there is the purpose
of carrying on, of keeping the process going, just as one may breathe so as to continue breathing. The purpose of carry on. This purpose looks for the best and will not stop until you get into there. Also if you have this kind of purpose, you are not a person who usually says the word ‘giving up’. This kind of purpose is for the people who can still continue despite of whatever the outcome maybe. They are always looking forward to find the plan A-Z just to meet their own satisfaction. Perhaps, everyone has their own goals and purposes in everyday life as they woke up in the morning. But I am pretty sure that not everyone had completely attained those goals and purposes. Know your purpose especially on what you are doing. Ask yourself, do I still have a purpose in life? And then look for an answer in a way of doing something purposive and will give you the benefits not only for the better of yourselves but also for the people behind you. I believe that if you’re a person who doesn’t derive a deep sense of purpose at this point in time of your life, if you don’t come radiantly alive several times a day, if you don’t feel deeply grateful and wasting all of at the tremendous good fortune that came up to you, then you are wasting your life. And life is too short for you to waste. Indeed, I do have a faith that everyone has their own purpose in life. If you don’t know your own, maybe you are just unaware of it. Explore everything that is behind you for you to make things possible. Then, start to move by yourself, start to prove something to yourself and in that way you can find your purpose in life. Focus on your strength and enhance it until you were there for you to wake up in the morning not only with your alarm ticking but also with your purpose to continue your journey and have a motivation in life. vvv

am sure that a Ransom Riggs fan already figured out the title of this column. Yes! It is the third book of Miss Peregrines Peculiar Children Series. It is a newly released book and luckily I am able to have it (though I haven’t started reading it yet, still on the second book). The series got me through its unique vintage-like covers and the fact that the story is being accompanied with haunting images – peculiar it is! Well, as the name implies, the book covers the world of peculiar children. The children is composed of one who floats, one who is invisible, one who have bees inside him and one who can ignite fire on her hands among the others. They live in a place where the dwellers are those of the same nature. They live in a place of a same time, everything happens repeatedly; they call it loops. In short, they are isolated. Due to their peculiarity, the common people tend to make fun and take advantage out of them. This is a fact not only happening in Riggs’ world but also in the society we belong. People who are different, physically or mentally, are being considered less human as the normal ones. They are being stereotyped in varied ways. There are no exactly similar persons, they can have something in common, but they cannot be absolutely similar. This only means that each people has his own uniqueness or peculiarity. This uniqueness sometimes seem to be negative in nature. A blind man sometimes blame God for not letting him see the beauty of his creation and a deaf may be asking why is he not able to hear the melody of the mockingbirds. This continues until they start thinking otherwise. A blind is lucky not to see how polluted the present world is and a deaf is fortunate not to hear the screams of people in war. Truly, we can always see good things in anything. Let me consider Apolinario Mabini as an example. He did fight for the country amidst the loss of his legs due to polio. Among the other revolutionist, he can really be considered as different. On the other hand, his physical shortfall was subdued by his intellectual prowess. So as Dr. Jose Rizal. Both of them utilized their own uniqueness not only for their good but for the sake of the many. Even in a normal school community, there are people who look different. There are those who seem to be too nerd that they are always the bullies’ apple of the eye. There are students who choose to divert from
the normal way of fixing themselves yet still confident to roam around the campus. Among which is someone who accepts who she is and showcases the talent God had given her, I hope some can still remember Krsna Rebong, an LSPU student that is physically different. She is actually smaller than the normal students but she can really be dubbed as the epitome of the adage small but terrible. She possesses angelic singing voice, an utter heavenly talent. Rebong used to sing in various activities of the university. Not with standing her look, still she stands tall and proud. What I am trying to emphasize is that no matter how different from the norms of the society a person may seem to be, there is still something in him that is worth showcasing. All has peculiarities, it falls upon a person to utilize his peculiarity. One should not envy others for not having what they have for other people may also envy him for the same reason. One should not be bothered for not making it to the standards of the people around him for those standards may be too trivial for the qualities he possesses. Most especially, one should not change himself, his own peculiarity, just to be accepted by a bunch of people but change himself for becoming better than who he is yesterday. Remember, one can’t blend in if he was born to stand out. Jacob, the protagonist of Riggs’ novel, once said that he used to dream about escaping his ordinary life, but his life was never ordinary. He had simply failed to notice how extraordinary it was. Likewise, it is difficult for most of the people to notice the extraordinary things happening in their lives. It is difficult to realize how trivial things can bring absolute bliss to a dire situation. It is difficult to escape reality for in reality there is nothing or no one to be escaped. I am different, I am peculiar, so are you. Why not try to find that extraordinary thing lying within yourself? Nobody can tell what will happen next but the sure thing is that it will bring something good. Each people deserves equal treatment no matter how different he may seem to be. Just remember that other people are better than you. Yes, better than you as much as you are better than them. Miss Peregrines Peculiar Children books are really unforgettable. Well, I’m just excited to read Library of Souls. vvv

e all know that one of the biggest problem of our country is facing such natural disasters especially typhoons. Since our country is located along the Pacific Ocean, it is expected to be surrounded by moist air, so the typhoon is able to feed on that. Anyway, my column is not about this disaster and typhoons we had been facing though it was somehow related and can be a factor that can be considered for the topic of my column that I want to discuss. One of the affected persons when there is a disaster or typhoon in our country were the students. Yes, students like us, even a pre-school student, elementary, secondary or college, we are the one who affected. It was expected to have a suspension of class. No one knows how long will this suspension will be, if it will be 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks and so on. And according to PAG-ASA and DOST, there are things to be considered according to their guideline to announce a suspension of classes to the provincial government and they will say “Walang Pasok”. When there’s a signal number 1 within our province, classes of pre-school are suspended, if signal number 2, preschool, elementary and high school and if else signal number 3, all levels. And it was stated that the local government (LGU) has the authority to declare suspension in their areas if there’s no storm signal. For me, as a student who wants to learn more in school, it was a really bad day for me when there is a suspension of classes. Most especially when everyone knows that the weather not bad for us to not attend school. Yes, there are some times that the suspension is pretty accurate to have protecting everyone of us from danger that might happen because of the disaster. Maybe some of my
readers have the same points of view like mine. Let’s it or not, some are really happy with this suspension and abusing those days of classes that are suspended. As I always visit the facebook page of our provincial government, I was really frustrated that most of the comments are begging for the suspension not because of the weather but because they just want to suspend the classes for their personal interest. I always read a comment saying that “We have exams Gov., please suspend the classes” or “Pakisuspend na po nung classes, di pa ko nakakapagreview”. I’m not generalizing, I am not mad. It was just really sad to see that students like me just waste their time and always hoping for “Walang Pasok”. Instead of their security and safety is the reason to suspend the classes, it is only just for their personal interest and laziness. For those who are this kind of person, did you ever realize that you are lucky to have an opportunity to attend school unlike those who are just in streets hoping they can go to school? Or can you just appreciate the effort of your parents and of those who are working just for you to go to the school and university you want? Disasters, floods, and typhoons are really strong forces of nature. Yes, we can ask of suspension for our safeness and security. But please, don’t make this suspension a joke. How can we attain our success if laziness is always there with us? We can maintain our balance between our education and safeness. But of course, we all know that safety is the most important. Just think about the things we are wishing and saying for. After realizing if this thing can be a good thing for you, how about for the others? We can be selfish, but not all the time. vvv

rom the moment we’re born, we tend to believe that life is a continuous process. We start out weak that is always dependent to others then steadily we become stronger, smarter and more confident. We must know how capable we are to change because it can be our toughest enemy in order to survive. We do not have any textbooks on how to live, or such instructions to transformation but our body surely knows how to adapt to the environment, the only problem is to open our mind to change. There are four changes (according to Martha Beck)- the wanted (necessary), wanted (not necessary), unwanted (necessary) and lastly unwanted (not necessary) that will help us how and when to change. This topic is maybe a cliché but the youth (37% of the national voters) will probably needing this next year. If there are four types of change, well there could be also four people who would say this: “I have to change, and I want to.” Balancing our needs and wants are really simple but head- aching hard to solve. Have you realize that even though no one is asking you to write, to eat, to study or to love someone but if every cell in your body wants to, that change could happen. Necessity together with desire will put us to a great decision of change. However, we are hypnotized into doing the “right”, responsible thing no matter what it takes especially if it is for us, for our family and love ones. “I don’t have to change, but I want to.” We also encounter people who call for a change but somewhat we don’t believe in that’s why we tend not to listen. Choosing who to vote needs to be done smartly, there would be many distractions and influences like family and friends but we must always remember that no one knows ourselves but us. Sometimes, we do not need somebody in order to decide, ourselves is almost enough. “I don’t want to change, but I have to.” Many people love to stay children forever because we all know that there are less responsibility and
problems. As we grow older, we more likely to appreciate life, its wondrous gifts and surprises. There are no excuses for change especially if it is a call of nature. I am seriously amazed how Filipinos are informed and committed to the upcoming 2016 election maybe it is the nature’s way of waking up every one of us to cooperate for a change. “I don’t want to change, and I don’t have to.” Contentment is not a bad thing, but if you see people that are still suffering maybe you could change your mind a little and start thinking that maybe is not yet enough. I have to change because there are other seven billion people in this planet that might be affected if I don’t. I want to change because I want to don’t to see the next generation suffering. I don’t have to change because I believe on something better, what we need matters but I want to change simply because what I believe maybe the change we are waiting for. I don’t want to change because I want to stay this way forever but sadly I have to change because the environment is making its way. I don’t want and I don’t have to change because I am contented. When circumstances force a transition we don’t want to make just remember the things left behind if we are still afraid of it. You don’t have to welcome these transitions, but accepting them is key. Resisting a change that’s beyond your control saps energy and leaves you in a state of constant frustration, which will make your life (and personality) harsh and miserable. You’ll navigate this type of transition much more easily if you are as kind to yourself as possible and tap into the unstoppable, courageous energy of purpose. Crisis shapes us, however painful it can be to withstand. March onward, and this hero’s journey will leave you stronger, wiser, and deeper. It is not easy to change by ourselves, what important next year is how we chose the right person to guide and manage us on the right direction of life transformation. vvv

A Bibliophile’s Response
A
day that goes by is like a page of book, flipped between. We read things and events like what happens in real life. Books are like a photo album, moments are reminisced, feelings are brought, and events are recalled. They may look too wordy, too boring or sometimes, too redundant to see in your everyday life, but it not something that just gives you sense in your life. For me, if I were to choose between a 3-D animated movie and a 500-pages novel, it is not that quite obvious that I will choose the latter. Books are not just things that we can just look, read, and then get over. Those materials take you to a whole new place that sometimes, you wouldn’t like to leave. If imaginations bubbles do exist, you could compare between a movie imaginative mind and bookworm the difference, one bubble is null, and the other contains rays of imaginative response to the world. Nowadays, people get to hang with gadgets. If you could look on the bigger perspective, technology is one factor that youth never holds book, but rather to build more defenses against incoming attacks. One click, one swipe on a tablet changes a person’s view in life. Once, you started clicking and dragging icons in your innovative device, sooner you’ll grow old with that in your hand. Gadgets provide fun and leisure, and probably yes, kills the boring feature we usually hate in life. Enjoyment sustained but you have LEARNED NOTHING. Visual effects are incurred to the point you don’t need to think for yourself but to just look at what you are doing. Impressive, I must say. But where’s the fun with that? A book gives you power to control how you think in life. It has this power, to again, take you to another dimension and let you live there as long as you want. You can create and destroy and everything. Imaginative skills will be ignited like a flame of a torch in a dim cave. Let’s look on another surrounding, if a person tries a book, a chapter a day maybe, what that he could
get but skills in grammar structures. I know it may be impossible but once you get attached to books, they’ll do nothing but love you. In return, they’ll help you be better in understanding the English language and you’ll ace your English class! Other fact about books is they’re not just papers written with ink. Softbound or even hardbound, they are like movies that you are the one directing your own scene. Actually, if you know however, some movies came from books thereof. Once you read a book, you start creating a world. A world you rule where you and your imaginations live. Also, if you want, you can direct a movie of your own! That is, in your mind only. If you want things to happen your way, so be it. Nobody can control the way you think. Lastly, books are not just reading tools that we read but they are far better than any games, as they also relieve stress, worries, and problems. When you are stressed, try reading a book, after reading, you’ll notice that all your worries are gone plus, you didn’t get bored! Look all the benefits books can give us, we can get to have things without paying or doing anything but just to read, it’s a win-win! People just have to learn what to do with life, make it more interesting and be happy in what they do. See? The fact that leisure comes at hand and what we need to do now is to appreciate what is in front of us. Read between the lines and see what I am trying to inculcate into thy young minds. We get to be a better person with books. I may be a bookworm or a bibliophile, but look what books have gotten into me? I love reading English literature and applying them in my life. I love writing essays and articles. The very reason I joined the campus publication. Also, books are the reason why I am a journalist. The very life blood of writing. Books did so many fun stuffs in my life. Go and read the pages of your books and feel the euphoria. vvv

HOPE AND FAITH
f you have faith in God, you will never lose hope. I heard this line for many times but in some other structure of words, mostly from my classmates and friends since when I was in high school. Life can only be given once by almighty God. Life is given to those who deserve to walk and feel the negative and positive side of the world. God gave us precious and wonderful life from the day we are born, to change what is wrong, to lead and be a savior to those who lose faith and hope in life, to make everything as crystal as clear to the eyes of many. At the very young age, we must know that life is very fragile. In just one wrong move, life will fall apart. We can’t make it perfect; No matter what great things we do, still there is a flaw from the eyes of the other. In this world even the good ones are failing to control the life they have, but taking care will be a great help and putting it to the right place and the right time also. Everything needs protection and love. Family is one of the best who offers love and protection after God. However, making decisions in life are sometimes hard, we must never choose the answer between Yes or No because assurance in life is very important. One answer that will come out from our mouth can really make a big change. As stated in Daniel 12:3, “Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever.” Being hopeless is not the answer to realize and obtain the exact answer. What is the purpose of feet?
We can still go back from the start. How about the face especially the mouth and inside of it is the part of the body with the most sins? Words are very powerful, show happiness and let everybody know that in life there is a lot of good options. Following what is right can make us more better and effective son of God who’s watching over us every time. Sometimes, we cannot handle each problems that make us feel helpless. It is like being stocked in the middle of nowhere. But what could be the solution to overcome our struggles in life and reach the happiness in life? There are many solutions and we can find it from people that surround us. And solving problems in life is different from solving mathematical equations. We mostly need Faith in God, Words to make us feel not hopeless, and trust for those who care. Remember the well-known quotation of many doctors around the world “Prevention is better than cure.” Well, keeping and applying that quotation in our life makes a good effect to us, we must think and make decisions right wherein we cannot put ourselves to feel in vain or hopeless in life. Asking God for answers will help, we must assure the guidance from him because God never got delay anytime. From then and now, God always show the way to happiness and peaceful life. Watching us grow, blessings each day, colorful and meaningful life. God knows what we want and need. We must never say in our mind, just to give up on things that can make our life better or for the sake of others wants to feel relief. vvv

Kwentong Jeepney “

he Gears, the official student publication of Laguna State Polytechnic University – Santa Cruz Main Campus (LSPU-SCC) continues to amplify the voice of the youth for 55 years. Founded on 1960, The Gears has been part of the growth of the university by disseminating right information and balance reporting to its students and officials that was proven and still being proven up to now.

For more than five decades, the publication was handled by more than forty administrations and is always leaving a “legacy.” That legacy, according to Juosea Montanez, former Editor-in-Chief of the publication in 2011, is not just about the old newspapers or used pens, or bars of gold, it’s about the staffers that handed down themselves, their own souls, their individualities that echoes through time. In addition to that, the sweat, tears, sleepless nights and perseverance by the previous and recent staffers, for the past fifty-five years of service, are all paid off because of the prestigious awards and recognitions received by the publication. In fact, The Gears garnered medals from different categories in the Regional Higher Education Press Conference (RHEPC). In 2005, the Development Communication page was the best page in tabloid category. In 2007, the sports and feature page in broadsheet are one of the best pages as it both got third place. In 2013, the Literary Folio got the Best Cover Design and the broadsheet got Best page design; both in second spot. Additionally, the broadsheet of the The Gears Publication is considered as one of the best broadsheet on out of more than forty universities. In 2014, Mekanismo is one of the Best Magazines and the publication belonged to the top ten best performing schools in campus journalism. The Gears also bagged awards from Luzon Wide Press Conference, a competition that is participated by different universities from Luzon. In fact, in 2014, the literary folio got the best content
ars @ 55
and as the best concept, 9th place. The sports page on the broadsheet was considered as the best as it outshined other universities’ sports page winning first and sixth place in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, the magazine got ninth place for Best Page Design. Aside from that, the The Gears Publication is the Best Contingent Publication in the University Wide last 2014. The publication won in various competitions with flying colors because the writers keep its motto: “To write without favor and to express without fear,” in their minds, soul and heart. Medals and recognitions are just bonuses because the publication’s real goal is to be the voice of every student
here in Laguna State Polytechnic University. The student journalists of the The Gears Publication write only what is true and don’t and will never manipulate the content of articles for the sake of others. Its writers know how to use the proper words to express something and will never use his or her emotions in writing because it can cause blindness on what is true. Additionally, they will use the power they received from the publication to change not only the life of a single person but also the society. Because although many years had passed, they know that being a student journalist is not an obligation for it is a voluntary act to wholeheartedly help people.
Furthermore, The Gears Publication is like a gun. According to Mr. Webster, a gun is a weapon that shoots bullets or shells. Yes, you’re right on what you’ve just read— a gun. The publication including its staff members and writers represent the “gun,” while the truth is the “bullet,” the braveness is the “armor” and the one who are holding the gun is the people including the students who believe in The Gears Publication. The publication serves as the gun for the past fifty-five years and will continue its purpose. Maybe this “gun” may hurt and wound others but still, it will save many—especially to those who are holding and believing to it. vvv

lassics never go out of style. Classics established the cultured modernity. Classics, though old in time, remain young and beautiful. Truly, classics can never be forgotten until it becomes an undeniable will of legacy. So as the classic physical beauty and aesthetic prowess, the vehemence of campus journalism does not fade trhough the rapid tick of the clock. In fact, it continuously progresses; its power and intrepidity will eternaly serve as the exponent of significant and valuable ideas to the minds it aim to serve. For 55 years, The Gears Publication have had provided Laguna State Polytechnic University and its stakeholders with undying idea of writing without favor and expressing without fear. It is more than five decades of voicing out the whole student body yet with the principle of maintaining a pro student but not anti administration writing. With it, the classic principle of our publication grew into an undeniable legacy which we aim to prolong and develop. The classic turned into a legacy, and in time, this legacy will turn to a classic and as how they say it, history will repeat its self. vvv

Larawan ng Nakaraan, Ating Balikan

By | Joyce Ann Fabula
S

Grave of the Fireflies By l Lou Fatima Muega Rating:
97% Grave of the Fireflies is one of Japan’s masterpiece in the field of animated film. It was released on 1988 and was directed and written by Isao Takahata. It was based on a short story with the same name written by Akiyuki Nosaka. The story revolves around the struggle of two siblings, Seita and Setsuko, during Second World War. Because of many conflicts, they became homeless and parentless.
The film shows the effects of war and how the innocents were greatly affected by it. It’s not about heroic deeds of an ordinary teenage boy or some overused plot about the end of the world, it’s just a simple story about a brother who will do anything for the sake of her little sister. It took acclaim from film critics for its astonishing plot, excellent visuals and brilliant productions.
Grave of the Fireflies is not your ordinary film with colourful backgrounds and joyful endings. It will give everyone an epiphany about war and will definitely touches anyone’s hearts vvv.
Hey Jude By l Motchi Leuterio
Everyone has a problem and is eagerly finding its solution. As we all know, when we have a problem, we also experienced a lot of emotion, stress also strikes. But who will cheer us up when no one is there? Who are we going to talk to when we have problems that we can’t tell to anyone? A song from a famous English rock band “The Beatles” written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon-McCartney,“Hey Jude” maybe, is the solution. This song was originally written to comfort John Lennon’s son during his parent’s divorce. “ D o n ’ t carry the world upon your shoulders For well you know that it’s a fool who plays it cool.
By making his world a little colder”
These lines from the song tell that you shouldn’t carry all the problems by yourself and should not think of it too much. This song will give you comfort, it will make your stress goes off and make you feel better throughout the day. When you think too much about your problem and can’t find a remedy, it’s better to cool down yourself through listening to this song and later on, you might find a solution.
Truly, the song does not only bring angelic melody but also inspirational message. Though classic, the song still delivers its intent, it just justifies that classics never go out of style. vvv

hen the Holy Empire of Britannia conquered Japan easily by using their armored machines known as Knightmare Frames, the country fell down easily and forced to live under Britannia’s power. On the other hand, Lelouch Lamperouge, a teenager who lives in Japan, became involved in the actual battle of the rebellions and the Britannians. There, he met C.C, a mystical lady who gave him power called Geass, that can make people obey all his commands. Code Geass is not just also about war and huge robots for it’s considered as one of the greatest anime of all time because of its remarkable characters and astonishing plot. It will make you happy, sad, angry, amazed and eventually may give you a heartache. Like the Neon Genesis Evangelion, it’s also about the repairing and healing of this ruthless place we lived in. Lastly, it’ll let you know and understand that there are “negative things” that can make this world into a better one.
his series happened in the year 2015 set in an apocalyptic era wherein the only chance for human survival lies on a machine which is the Evangelion. This fighting machine was made to fight on Angels, alien machines that invade the earth. Then there’s Shinji Ikari, a doubtful and fragile fourteen-year-old boy that was chosen to pilot one of the Evangelion. Furthermore, it focuses on the experiences and struggles of Shinji Ikari as well as the other chosen fourteen-year-olds, while piloting the Evangelion. It is not your typical anime of gigantic robots with intense fighting scenes, it is not just about war between Humans and Angels for it is one of the most polarizing anime in history because it will bring you unanswered questions in your mind. Furthermore, it’s about the chaotic state of the world as well as on how to transform it into a “better” place. To better understand the series, watch its movie.

efore you get crazy on DOTA, Clash of Clans, League of Legends, Candy Crush etc., have you ever wonder to play again those things you can find in your Nokia 3315 and 3310? Have you remember how your head almost rotate just to avoid your snake to reach out the maze? Do you want to scream again when a big alien is attacking you? Do you want to eat mushroom to grow up and save the princess from a turtle-like monster? Or do you want to get away f r o m ghosts that are chasing you? Do you want to be that child again back in 90s and early 2000s by playing those old yet enjoyable games of the century? So let’s take a look back at those games we’ve enjoyed the most.
SNAKE GAMES Who will forget this game? This is a thumb shaking game where the player maneuvers a line which grows in length, with the line itself being a primary obstacle. There is no standard version of the game. The player controls a dot, square, or objects on a bordered plane. As it moves forward, it leaves a trail behind, resembling a moving snake. In some games, the end of the trail is in a fixed position, so the snake continually gets longer as it moves. In another common scheme, the snake has a specific length, so there is a moving tail a fixed number of units away from the head. The player loses when the snake runs into the screen border, a trail, or another obstacle.
Space Impact
Aliens! Aliens! Aliens! In this game the player has the ability to freely move horizontally and vertically but cannot increase the speed of the screen’s auto-scrolling feature. As each level is played, various enemy ships confront the player, some of them following strict paths, others following the ship itself and others shooting it. On the first game there are eight levels, set on different planets and underground areas, with a boss at the end of each level. After losing all lives, the player is awarded a score and depending on how many enemies killed, how many power-ups picked and how many levels the player passed, that score can be placed on the Top Scores page in the game’s menu.
Supermario
1 UP! Save the Princess! The Super Mario game follows Mario’s adventures in the fictional Mushroom Kingdom, usually with Mario as the player character. He is usually joined by his brother, Luigi, and occasionally by other members of the Mario cast. As in platform video games, the player runs and jumps across platforms and atop enemies in themed levels. The games have simple plots, typically with Mario rescuing the kidnapped Princess Peach from the primary antagonist, Bowser. The first title in the series established gameplay concepts and elements prevalent in nearly every Super Mario game since. These include a multitude of powerups and items that give Mario special magic powers such as fireball-throwing and size-changing into giant and miniature sizes.

FEATURES
Pac-Man Ghosts!! This game makes the player controls Pac-Man through a maze, eating pacdots. When all pac-dots are eaten, Pac-Man is taken to the next stage. Four enemies (Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde) roam the maze, trying to catch Pac-Man. If an enemy touches Pac-Man, a life is lost and Pac-Man himself withers and dies. Near the corners of the maze are four power pellets that provide Pac-Man with the temporary ability to eat the enemies. The enemies turn deep blue, reverse direction and usually move more slowly. When an enemy is eaten, its eyes remain and return to the center box where it is regenerated in its normal color. Blue enemies flash white to signal that they are about to become dangerous again and the length of time for which the enemies remain vulnerable varies from one stage to the next, generally becoming shorter as the game progresses.
Tamagotchi
It is an older version of Pou. A Tamagotchi is a keychain-sized virtual pet simulation game for people of all ages. Pets have Hunger meter, happy meter, bracelet meter and discipline meter to determine how healthy and well behaved the pet is. Filling up the Hunger meter can be achieved by feeding the pet a meal (usually a loaf of bread) or a snack (usually a piece of candy). Filling up the Happy meter can be achieved by playing mini games with the pet or by feeding it a snack (there are no limits to this, but there are limits to how many meals can be fed). Mini games vary between versions, but mainly involve guessing which way the pet will turn (left or right) within 5 tries. The Discipline meter can be filled by pressing the “scold” option when a pet calls for attention but refuses to play or be fed a meal. The pet will leave droppings around the screen from time to time, and can become sick if they are not cleaned up.
Breakout
Battle City
Breakout begins with eight rows of bricks, with each two rows a different color. The color order from the bottom up is yellow, green, orange and red. Using a single ball, the player must knock down as many bricks as possible by using the walls and/or the paddle below to ricochet the ball against the bricks and eliminate them. If the player’s paddle misses the ball’s rebound, he or she loses a turn. The player has three turns to try to clear two screens of bricks. Yellow bricks earn one point each, green bricks earn three points, orange bricks earn five points and the top-level red bricks score seven points each. The paddle shrinks to one-half its size after the ball has broken through the red row and hit the upper wall. Ball speed increases at specific intervals. Once the second screen of bricks is destroyed, the ball in play harmlessly bounces off empty walls until the player relinquishes the game, as no additional screens are provided.
The player, controlling a tank, must destroy enemy tanks in each level, which enter the playfield from the top of the screen. The enemy tanks attempt to destroy the player’s base as well as the human tank itself. A level is completed when the player destroys all 20 enemy Tanks, but the game ends if the player’s base is destroyed or the player loses all available lives. Battle City contains 35 different stages that are 13 units wide by 13 units high. Each map contains different types of terrain and obstacles. Battle City was one of the earlier games to allow two players to play simultaneously. Both players have to defend the base together, and if one player shoots the other, the friendly fire victim would be unable to move for a while. vvv

Most Risky and Unhealthy Drinks in the World.

southern part of Metro Manila and Laguna, as well as a dike that would mitigate flooding in the western coastal communities along Laguna Lake. The Laguna Lakeshore Expressway Dike is a proposed expressway in the Philippines that will start from the coastal area of Laguna de Bay from Taguig in Metro Manila to Calamba and Los Baños in Laguna . In view of this, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is inviting local and international companies to pre-qualify to Bid to finance, design, construct, operate, and maintain the Laguna Lakeshore Expressway-Dike Project (LLEDP). The Project involves a construction of a 47-kilometer flood control
dike on top of which will be a sixlane expressway, on an off-shore alignment 500 meters away from the western shoreline of Laguna Lake, including interchanges, bridges, floodgates, and pumps, from Taguig to Los Banos; and Reclamation of 700 hectares west of and abutting the expresswaydike, separated from the shoreline by a 100- 150-meter channel, in Taguig and Muntinlupa. The expressway will cost an estimated PHP36.74 billion or US$854.42 million. When constructed, it is expected to ease traffic congestion along Muntinlupa and Calamba area, and to serve as flood control measure for communities on the western shore of Laguna de Bay. Reducing travel time from
Bicutan to Los Baños from 90 to 35 minutes, Php 8.1B average annual flood damage will be avoided also an average of 800,000 people will no longer be affected by flood. Travel speed will increase from 30–45 kph to 80 kph The expressway is intended to relieve the heavily travelled Bicutan–Calamba corridor (SLEX and Manila South Road). Mitigating flooding and improve the living conditions in the western coastal communities along Laguna Lake and to ease traffic flow and the transport of goods and services to and from Metro Manila, Laguna, Batangas and Quezon, thus spurring additional economic activity. – To create productive land and create opportunities for developing a new
business and residential area on reclaimed land, to enhance regional and urban development. Serving as an alternate to the congested road of the National Highway from Calamba to Los Baños, the proposed expressway will be used to integrate a flood control system to protect the flood prone areas located along the shorland of Laguna Lake. Main economic benefits include savings in vehicle operating costs, savings in passenger time, reduction in flood damages, increase in land productivity in existing communities due to flood protection, and increase in land productivity (value added) in the reclamation area. '' The proposed construction
of Mega Dike in some portion or within some lake shore municipalities along Laguna de Bay is a welcome to the cities and municipality which will benefit from the proposed project. Because when the project will be finished, it will shorten the time of travel of work forces or laborers from home to the factory or place of work. But on the other hand, the Mega Dike if constructed will surely affect the lives of about 2500 fishermen who are directly depending on their daily sustenance from fishing within the lake. Mostly in other cases some families depend on fishing to support the education of their children." Said, Mr. Valerio E. Ablaza, worker on the accomplishment of the dike. vvv

WEST VALLEY FAULT in its ripening stage By | Jan Aldous Virina
different calamities involving some volcanic formations and
T
The Philippines is one of the countries located in the horseshoe-like structure belt of tectonic movements, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions which is apparently called the Pacific ring of fire. In such explanation, Philippines is subjected into many folds of tectonic plates produced by the uneven seismic movement or due to eruptions, around the edges of Pacific Ocean.
oday the country is facing the coming of this socalled “The Big One which is according to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) is a 7.2 magnitude earthquake which could destruct almost the largest part of Metro Manila and nearest provinces wherein the West Valley Fault (WVF) lies. Alongside, with the fault are different infrastructures, both public and private. Due to this many residents are affected involving in particular people living near the 5-meter zone of active fault lines because of the restraints from the government to stay near the given areas. According to further studies, Philvocs elaborated that the WVF is near to its ripening age almost 400 years after its long way living in silence and it’s on 357th year of being in place, near to the approximated study. When the expected movement of the fault occurs a horizontal clash of the plate could produce the 7.2 magnitude affecting different areas of Manila, Laguna, Bulacan, and Cavite whereas as Director Renato Solidum Jr. of Philvocs stated the following foresight happenings and casualties:
47
DEVCOMM
n A large earthquake from the WVF can significantly affect Metro Manila and vicinity. n A magnitude 7.2 WVF earthquake may cause an estimated 12.7 percent heavy and 25.6 percent partly damage in residential building while heavy damage is estimated around 8-10 percent and partly damage is 20-25 percent for public buildings. n Given Manila's population of 9,932,560, Phivolcs estimated 33,500 or 0.3 percent fatalities in a magnitude-7.2 WVF earthquake. A total of 113,600 or 1.1 percent of the population may also be injured. n Since the magnitude 7.2 may also cause fire, Phivolcs also estimated additional deaths by fire of 18,000 people.
As a preventive solution for the arousing calamity potential the government had launched High resolution West Valley Fault maps which is also known as The Valley Fault System Atlas, a handbook with 33 map sheets of cities traversed by the East Valley Fault and West Valley Fault. This project of Philvocs sponsored funds from Australian Aid and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) showcases the most detailed map of the two faults so far, having been done in a scale of 1:5,000. Such detail allows users to see locations of roads and buildings. This is an improvement of a previous map by Phivolcs done in a 1:10,000 scale. In this sense, Executive Director Alexander Pama National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said "The Valley Fault System Atlas will play a critical role in our programs for preparedness," said. The atlas serves as the tool of preparedness of any type of people in line with this eventuality. This project shows awareness for people to know the boundaries from the fault and also the potential evacuation centers and active faults. The Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB) assured that it will use the maps in whole metropolis as the NDRRMC approved the new guidelines. In so doing, HLURB will definitely use the maps as references in producing and making plans in most of the cities in the whole region abiding certification of approval from Philvocs. A metrowide earthquake drill has been done in the metropolis showing the depiction of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake scenario showing the damaged buildings, debris, ambulances, people who are injured etc. People are encouraged to demonstrate and practice the “duck, cover and hold. And the procedures in an actual earthquake drill. In Laguna State Polytechnic University- Sta. Cruz Main Campus, as one of the nearest provinces in Metro Manila, the institution had also undergone the earthquake drill in a wholesome manner. Nine colleges of the university participated in the eventuality. This aims to protect students when the hit of the 7.2 magnitude happens and eventually according to some studies like the earthquake in Aurora way back 1991 affected Manila tremendously so well as nearest provinces are probably subjected to damages and destructions. More so, a number of earthquake drills were also organized in different academic institutions - both private and public - most especially those who are near the fault. So as other drills, it was participated by the members of the institutions including students and the faculties. Some news reports already stated the efforts rendered by private companies to equip their buildings with neccessary materials needed for emergency purposes. Emergency and earthquake drills were also done by these private commercial institutions. Indeed by any means, preparedness is more effective than any other thing. Causalities may be positively lessen when people are informed. It is better to weigh in which solutions are even for the benefit of the whole WVF area. It is apparent that the government are providing such rules and precautionary measures towards this natural calamity issues and in return people are being aware on what to do. First aid kits, food packs, extra clothes and necessities are in packed as well as the people’s readiness from natural phenomena. vvv Photos from varied internet sources.

Calamity Behind Calamity El Niño Budget Under “Corruption Prone” Funds by | Zion Krehl Astronomo
''For one, when you look at the regional distribution of the NIA budget, you can see that the P13.1 billion NCR irrigation budget is P7 billion more than the budget allotted for Central Luzon, which is only P6 billion. Now here’s the question: Why does the irrigation budget for NCR trump the budget for the country's so-called rice granary?''
T
hat was the dispute raised by Kabataan Partylist Representative Teddy Ridon, as he questioned the controversial ₱13-BILLION IRRIGATION FUND allocation for National Capital Region (NCR) listed in items under the National Irrigation Administration (NIA). In the first sense, it is very noticeable that the budget received by NCR or Metro Manila is more than double than Central Luzon’s acquired fund. Take note that Manila is an urban area that doesn’t even have rice field, making the budget distribution of NIA a questionable one. As the El Niño phenomenon is fast approaching and might destroy agricultural areas, our government must distribute funds properly. But in that case, it seems that fund allotment is indeed controversial, worthy to be talked about. Let’s put this issue in the limelight under careful scrutiny and deliberate discussion. El Niño Phenomenon: Philippines “Fever”
A strong El Niño heats up the atmosphere and changes circulation patterns around the globe, especially During the Arroyo administration, the government had entered into import contracts for rice as a short-term alternative, according to former President’s Spokesman Gary Olivar. Pres. Aquino seems to adapt this temporary remedy that aids the problem for a while but not actually solving it. Being in the typhoon corridor of the Pacific, the Philippines is naturally vulnerable to the vagaries of the weather. However, the government continues to resort to
49

the jet stream over the Pacific. It also influences cyclone seasons around the planet. The Western Pacific, wherein the Philippines lies, tends to see more and stronger typhoons, which may explain why there have already been 5 super typhoons there in 2015. Normally there's only one by this point in the year. Experts say that Philippines would likely to experience dry spell, which Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) defines as three or more consecutive months of below-normal rainfall, as one of the destructive effects of El Niño. Just like how fever makes the body temperature above normal, our country would as well increase in temperature brought by intense heat due to certain rainfall. Some 14 provinces are affected, including agricultural powerhouse Central Luzon composed of Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales as well as Nothern Luzon’s Cagayan and Isabela, among others, where irrigation is almost dried up. With less rainfall, shortage of water supply becomes prevalent, leading to water-rationing in some cases and may also lead to insufficient supply of water for crops. This may then affect the power supply in the country, especially in places where electricity is sourced from hydropower plants. Drought may also lead to shortage in food supply, especially because the Philippines is an agricultural country. Anomalies in Advance
Huge controversies arise out of the 2016 (porkfilled) budget, the biggest of which is a P13-B irrigation allocation for Metro Manila listed in items under the National Irrigation Administration (NIA). ''We've got a bloated irrigation budget, which
quick fix solution of importing when struck by natural calamity. Feasible Recommendations
With the government’s billion funds for irrigation project, it is possible to put up proper irrigation system in the entire country since only $212.7 million or roughly ₱8.5 billion is needed to put in place working irrigation systems for some 164,000 ha of rice fields in the country, according to Jessica Reyes-
Cantos, head of the Rice Watch and Action Network. El Niño phenomenon won’t be a menace to the agricultural sector of our country if the government will distribute funds appropriately, utilize those funds properly, and make sure that projects to help our farmers will be at par to its implementations. Hopefully, Pres. Aquino will leave his “boss” a rice self-sufficient country with efficient and effective counter-measures against calamity behind calamity. vvv
is almost 30 times higher than its budget in P1-billion budget 2014, yet ask our farmers and they will surely lament the huge sum they are paying for irrigation. Why can't NIA offer free irrigation despite the fact that the agency is literally being inundated with funds? Largescale corruption may be at fault,'' Ridon stated, pointing out the 14-percent increase in the budget of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) for 2016, bulk of which is allocated to the National Capital Region (NCR). He also declared that there are several questionable and ''corruption-prone'' items in the P32.7-billion NIA budget. The youth lawmaker also questioned a particular provision in the NIA budget which allows the NIA administrator to modify details of any particular irrigation project, alá Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP). Ridon was referring to Section 3.8 of the NIA special provisions in the National Expenditure Program which states, ''The Administrator of NIA is authorized to modify the details within a program, activity, project, subject to the following: (i) the allotment released has not been obligated; (ii) may only be done once and until June 30, 2016, except if due to the occurrence of calamities; (iii) of the same project category; and (iv) undertaken by same operating unit.'' ''This provision allows NIA to basically forego the Congress-approved projects and fund other irrigation projects of their liking, alá DAP. Undoubtedly, the proposed NIA budget is unconscionably designed for corruption. How can the Aquino administration tolerate such proposal with alacrity, despite our farmers’ long-standing call for free and efficient irrigation?" The Anakpawis Party-list Representative Fernando Hicap, on the other hand, declared that the combined annual multi-billion peso budget of the DA for its National Rice Program (NRP) since President Aquino assumed power in 2010 has failed seriously in achieving food security for the country. The group said Filipinos have had to endure declining rice utilization per capita for rice from 119.92 kilograms in 2009 to 116.48 kg in 2013 while National Food Authority (NFA) rice stocks registered a sharp decline from a monthly average of 1.7 million metric tons in 2010 to only 540 thousand metric tons in 2013. Anakpawis said that the Aquino administration's rice program that was allotted ₱31.37 billion from 2011 to 2015, still failed to increase local production to secure

the country’s food production requirement. In addition, NFA which was allotted ₱19.25 billion, instead of beefing up its stocks for the welfare of the people, has pushed for downsizing and has allowed the share of commercial stocks to increase. The US Department of Agriculture ranked the Philippines as fourth top rice importing country, following China, Nigeria and Iran, for importing 1.6 million metric tons in 2014. Scarce and Short-lived Solutions
Farmers are marginalized after years of neglect, while the government has failed to "devise strategic and effective measures" confronting the industry, such as severe drought. With much of the arable land relying on rain-fed irrigation systems, the situation has become dire, a coalition of rice farmers and traders is warning. It noted that the bulk of rice production was expected in the last quarter of the year, but this could be weakened by the extended effects of El Niño.

nimal cruelty is widespread all over the world where millions of animals are being abused. Many people are fighting for their freedom because animals have a great contribution when it comes to Earth’s natural resources preservation. The ‘animal life’ or also known as ‘fauna’ is referring to their connection in the environment. Without animals planet Earth would be worthless. There will be no human who’s going to exist anymore if all of them are vanishing one by one because animals also exhale the carbon dioxide needed by plants in order to live and survive on Earth.

Animals are known as human companions but many of them are not treated right.”
Last year, everyone is shocked after hearing the news about the culture of Yulin, Guangxi, China has, and they are celebrating the Yulin Dog Meat Festival annually during the summer solstice in the month of June. Lychee and dog meat are about to eat and serve to many festival goers in which approximately 10,000 to 15,000 dogs are brutally slaughtered and cooked for the ten days celebration of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Reactions are made about what’s happening during the before and during the festival because dogs are abuse and some are stolen from household. Millions of animal lovers around the world are sign a petition via internet wanting to stop the annual festival but removing the culture of Yulin, Guangxi, China have is not very easy and people still need to respect every culture. Animals are known as human companions but many of them are not treated right. Neglect is a passive type of cruelty and commonly happens in households and community like starving the animal to death, giving an adequate shelter and lack of time to give care and love. In some Western countries, animals are abused by putting in a show like circus, television and film making. Animals trainers use whips, chains and setting animals to a hard training – animals are getting harmed and even killed during the set and in some cultural rituals they are get sacrifice. When it comes giving entertainment to humans they must not be forced and harmed if they did not execute correctly or perfectly drive the movements because they are different from humans and they their own life and abusing them is not the way of fulfilling the emotional needs of a human. In Philippines, we have the Republic Act No. 8485, an act to promote animal welfare. This law is supported by many Filipinos especially the groups that the main objective is to protect animals. Internationally, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) who is recognized around the globe in preserving the nature and saving the endangered species. They started saving the Earth since 1960 and until now the mission is protect the natural resources. Locally, the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) who are fighting for the freedom of Mali, Manila Zoo’s 38-year-old elephant, Animal Welfare Coalition (AWC) is promoting a proper pet care, animal control and stopping the trading of dog meats, The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) are helping to rescue dogs and cats and arrest the animal abusers. There is a lot of organizations in the world who aims to protect the animal wildlife and their habitats. They are persuading everyone to help the animals exist. Every soul can save a single soul, No matter what a person are he can make some ways to protect Mother Earth. vvv

SPORTS EDITORIAL Student Athlete Protection Act
Student-athlete is considered as most important part of every sport events since the school provides opportunity for the student to experience training and higher level of tournament with relation to sports. They provide student-athlete a chance to showcase their abilities, determination, hardworking, teamwork and discipline towards winning to certain level of tournament. Despite of this goal, some schools considered the residency as a requirement for them to represent the school in competition. In relation to that issue, President Benigno Aquino III has signed into law Republic Act No. 10676, an act protecting the amateur nature of student-athletes in the Philippines by regulating the residency requirement and prohibiting the commercialization of student-athletes and shall be known as the “Student-Athletes Protection Act”, which nixes residency rules for high school athletes electing to transfer to different colleges. DARK MIND
Merits not Demerits

veryone has its own talent. Sometimes you can have the same or similar to others but most of the time, they differs. Talent refers to the natural ability to do something well, so every one of us have a unique talent and styles where we can say that we differs from one another. Some were given an angelic voice like Selena Gomez, Kelly Clarkson, and Taylor Swift; but some were given an aesthetic dance moves which make them a limelight in the dance floor particularly Michael Jackson who is famous in his dance moves. On the other half, some people didn’t give a chance to have an opportunity to have a talent in music and arts but they have given an athletic body in which they can excel on their very own field of sports. Particular in these talents are: the Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao who is an eight division world champion; LeBron James who was given an athletic body and a talent in basketball who can make his team on the top; Usain Bolt who was given a talent in track events in which he was regarded as the fastest person ever and he sealed double-triple on the last two consecutive Summer Olympics; and even 18-time title holder champion Jack Nicklaus who was well known in his golfing career. But amidst of their talent, do you ever think how these following athletes reached the top of their sports career? It was not only all about their talent, but with their discipline they’ve used to improve what they have now. There will no better result if you have just a talent, but if you have the discipline in yourself, you can achieve what you desired. Like what the quote tells,” talent without discipline is like an octopus on roller skates. There’s a plenty of movements but you never know if it’s going to be forward, backward, or sideways.” So through discipline, talent can be improve and develop to gain more victories. Imagine, Manny Pacquiao was not born as a boxer but just a simple
man who use to sell pandesal when he was 14 years old. He does not have a relative boxer so he has not born with a talent in boxing. He just join one of the amateur boxing tournament on their place and with his hidden talent in this sport, he came out with an eight division title holder. It is because when he starts his career in boxing, he used to start also his training and attend his practice sessions and that is what we called a discipline. At the start of his career, he already had his discipline. And now what we had now, he used to thank God for all the blessing to him. During his training also, he doesn’t eat heavy meals to cope up with his diet and that’s also a discipline. On his life, he prove that you might not have the best talent in boxing but if you have the good discipline, you can out classed those who only have talent. Similarly, the American basketball icon LeBron James was not born to be a basketball MVP but he was just a young in which Frank Walker, a local youth football coach introduced basketball to him when he was nine. How could he become a basketball icon if this sport was just introduced at him at nine? It because his hard work and dedication. But how does he improve these talents in this kind of sport until he reached his MVP titles? Through his discipline in his trainings and game practices, James became the outstanding player when he was freshmen until his seniors. He brought up his game talent up to his Cleveland team improving his strength in the basketball court through his game efforts which makes him the first MVP at his team, Cavaliers. He didn’t stop but pursue his game talent and developed with his discipline in training until he took two championships. Winning with just a talent is temporary but winning with discipline is permanently and even an amateur athlete can turn him into a professional one like the above aforementioned names. vvv

t’s been a year since I have written a sports column in the last issue of this magazine. It feels like a great honor to share and express my opinions not in wide range issues of the country but specifically the Philippines’ pride Gilas Pilipinas. It is quite a good legacy that the team had attained the 31st rank in the FIBA World Cup and 7th in the FIBA Asia Cup. As of now, Gilas is battling amongst other Asian country and as the cup is on its way in the making, there is massive news that boomed wherein NBA Los Angeles Lakers second combo guard Jordan Clarkson would be joining the team in the Asia Cup. Hence, many are disappointed when he didn’t make it and “kahit ako umasa.” Kidding aside, there are certain things to be considered in letting Clarkson to play in the hard court with the Gilas team. If we would ask for his eligibility in playing with the Gilas, the answer is that he is eligible due to reasons that according to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Director Sonny Barrios he is natural born and got his Philippine passport years before. In addition, Director Barrios emphasized that Clarkson had submitted his documents for the process of his eligibility. I was wondering, why is there a need to have these papers if the player is a natural born? Well, it seems like it is better to have legal processes. In contrary, way back 2011, Former Coach, Chot Reyes, had spoken to the Fil-Am player for recruitment and responded that Clarkson is not eligible on playing with the team. It’s pretty confusing at this point of issue because when in legal purposes, processes are needed. Hence, the question is why is that Clarkson didn’t play for the Philippines? Of course, the main issue I want to imply is that why Gilas do need Clarkson to play with them as they reached the peak of 31st rank in World
and 7th in the Asia 2014 FIBA Cup? Don’t take it against me but the reason why I said those things is because I have question in my mind that asking if the popularity of the team Clarkson is playing with is the main reason why the Team Pilipinas want to recruit Clarkson? Well, I’m not questioning the skills and professionalism of Clarkson. All I want to say is the nationality of the person do really have a great impact while on the hard court? I think it is not. Clarkson has been playing basketball since he was young and just like other players it is in the passion and dedication of such players in order for them to become more skillful and productive part of the team. Although, Lakers’ Fil-Am player do really showed his support in the team and do blurted that he wanted to play for the Philippines. However, such arousal of conflicts of schedules on the duration of FIBA and NBA trainings occurred so as a result Clarkson couldn’t play for the Philippines. Yet one milestone for the Philippines is that the Gilas is kept on playing and as many people always say “The show must go on.” I, as a Filipino, am not ashamed for all the efforts and whatever rankings the Team Pinas could attain but what matters most to me is that they fight for the country for whatever reason. I would be bias if I would say that Clarkson is better than our players, my point is that our government should make extra effort to pursue and produce some well-trained players not only in basketball but the all of kind sports because one way or another it isn’t all about nationality and patriotism but rather a true sport player must maintain their perseverance, dedication and the burning heart of passion with the morality and values the coaches and directors had imparted them and most especially the warm support and sustenance of the mass. vvv

Hitting Bull’s Eye
N
obody wants to come in second best as the saying goes, indeed, it is true. We don’t want someone to become more successful than us especially when it comes to competitions. Since we want to be the only person standing in front, being congratulated, applauded and receiving awards, we then are having the strong desire to be the best out of the others. This thing is called competitiveness. There are many forms of being competitive. There’s being competitive in the class, competitive in business, being competitive in courting a lady perhaps, competitive in joining different competitions and alike. With these different areas, competitiveness however, has only one goal to hit, and it is to be the best. So, by means of doing your best or to bring your `A Game’ as they call it, is the thing that can put you on the top spot. When you are to join a contest, sometimes you think too much of your competitors ability rather than to what you can do. You probably think too much of the possibility that you might get loose because you think that they are better than you. Well, you should not. Instead, you should think less of failure and think much of success. Put in mind that even though your competitors are great, you can still beat them by means of believing that you can. This is what I do everytime I join a competition; thinking that every competitors are great, but with enough training and believing myself, I know I can be greater than them. However, sometimes, we missed interpret the real meaning of being competitive. Some of us try to bring others down by means of saying offensive words against them. Bashing is the most common way of doing it. But even worst, sometimes we try to physically injure an opponent so he can’t move as good as he used to. These things will never make you better than them. It will never put you on top. If you want to be a winner, thinking that you’re good is never enough. You must also put much time in improving yourself. Being good is okay, but training can make yourself even better. Take a look at Manny Pacquiao every time he has his fight, no
matter how tall or huge his opponent in boxing is, he tries to overpower them. It’s because he knew that he is well prepared for the fight. He trained for months just to get on every single fight. Also, I’m pretty sure you’ve heard about the El Gamma Penumbra. An all-Filipino group shadow dancers who joined and won the first ever Asia’s Got Talent. Before they became champion they were once this group who joined different talent shows in their town and even in television contests. They were not yet the best, they were just one of the finalists. But after years of competing and trying to excel on their genre, El Gamma Penumbra is now known around the world and continuously inspiring people with their unique talent. Life isn’t about impressing someone, but proving yourself. It is most important that your desire to be the best is the desire of your own self. Do not do try to do great things just to impress someone else. It’s frustrating especially when the person that you’re trying to impress never values your effort on doing such things just to get his/her attention. If you want to be the best do it for yourself. Don’t be contented of what you have. Don’t worry, everyone has never been contented of what they had especially with the knowledge that they have and with the compliment that they are getting. No one wants to be under the shadow of someone. Everyone wants to be known for something they’ve done, and even for death, they want to be remembered. Live this world as if you are on a competition, and doing your best is the only option. Think that there’s no such end as draw, and nobody recognizes runnerup. But always remember; if you get lose on a fight don’t think of it as your last. Put in mind that there are lots of competitive people in this world, not just you. So if this time might be your opponent’s time to win, think that there will be yours too. Accept every failure and think of it as steps to success. Learn what has to be improved and apply it into your next competition. Once you learned how to do this, I might call you a competitive person. vvv

1Unusual Rules in Olympics
A
sport is not complete without mechanics in which the players learn to do. They also have rules that bring the ‘intensity’ between the events. But what if there are rules that may seem too odd for the sport itself and to think that it is used in the Olympics! Let’s see about that!
SAY DON’T--! FOR GROIN GRABBERS
In the Olympics, there is a sport called “water polo” in which the moves and acts like kicking, elbowing and other acts of brutality of brutality are disallowed. Including to this is the grabbing of the opponents crotch! Another big no-no in water polo is splashing water in the face.
PISTE LEAVERS.

In a sport called fencing, the players who leaves the piste, the area in which the tournament is held, is automatically considered as the player conceded the game.
JUMPING IN THE BOTTOM. The official rules in swimming, including the men’s and women’s race in 10 kilometer allows the swimmers to stand in the bottom. But, they cannot walk or jump. Jumping while standing in the pool is like walking in the moon!
Archery is the practice or skill of using a bow to propel arrows. The word comes WWvfrom the Latin arcus. Historically, archery has been used for hunting and combat.

SPORTS
THE SHOW MUST GO ON!
There is one category in gymnastics called Rhythmic Gymnastics in which a gymnast who is in a current performance had a technical difficulty in which his/her apparatus, maybe a hoop, ribbon, balls, or clubs, get stuck in midair or caught up in the ceiling, the gymnast don’t get another start over, but needs to continue what he/she is doing.
COLOR OPPOSITION.
In the sport beach volleyball, the teams opposing to each other must wear colors in which they should not be the same of one color. If so happens, there will be a coin toss of which team shall remain the color.
NICK KNOCK!
Show-jumping horses in the game are beforehand being tested if they have nicks, or small cuts in the legs. This is to avoid the players using chili pepper to make the horses be sensitive to pain, thus, making the horses jump higher. Once seen with a nick, the horse is disqualified.
SHOOT! NO PHONE!
Never conclude that the sport gun shooting as a “camera-shy” photography as cameras, cellular phones and even smoking cigars are not allowed. Even the spectators or the facilitators are disallowed to use phones while the game is in commence is prohibited. Flash photography is also a big no-no in the event.
GRAVITY DEMANDS.
Racers are required to maintain their foot on the ground all the times. Funny right? Even in walking, it is mathematically impossible to not set foot on the ground. As if players have wings or jetpacks in their backs. The officials need to change the rule as it is also judged by the naked eye.
HANKIE HELD UP.
According to the International Federation of Associated Wrestling, every wrestler must have cloth handkerchief with the player all the time. Female wrestlers must not have underwire bras. Additional to that, they must have singlet, either red or blue that means “forbidden”.
It’s quite funny how these rules are thought and made into reality. Come to think of it, they give additional spice to the sport itself! These are small rules to see but they also contribute to the sport being held in the Olympics. Maybe intriguing, but to think that we must play not to think the sport is a requirement, but a hobby we love doing. vvv

SIMILARITIES & DIFFERENCES IN CERTAIN SPORTS
By | Daiseree Angeles Mole
People are fun of watching sports. It is not an issue if it is foreign sports or local sports but there are commonly mistaken for some sports having certain similar features and rules in gaming. Here are some sports which are commonly misidentify together with its similarities and differences.
FUTSAL AND SOCCER Futsal has a lot in common with soccer or football. Both games is played by two teams who try to kick into the opponent’s goal. But futsal have several differences with football. Soccer is an outdoor game. On the other hand, Futsal is a type of soccer that is played indoors. Since soccer is played outdoors, it is played in a larger field than Futsal, which is played in a smaller field. Futsal consist of 5 players while soccer have 11 players on each team. Only the goalie can use hands, and possession goes to the other team if the ball goes out of hands. According to Hunter Futsal Soccer and Sports The origin of Futsal can be traced back to Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1930 when Juan Carlos Ceriani devised a five-a-side version of soccer for youth competition. Futsal ball is heavier and bounces less than a soccer ball. The goal in the futsal game is smaller and has no box. Corners do not have arcs or flags, often, there is a net around the pitch to contain the ball. And futsal doesn’t use yellow card and red card, those card is only used on a soccer game.
VOLLEYBALL AND SEPAK TAKRAW Both games played using a ball and a net. Balls used in volleyball is quite larger than in sepak takraw and the ball used in sepak takraw is made of Ratan. Both games also played by two teams, volleyball have 6 players while sepak takraw have 5, and only played by 3 players. Volleyball is a game played by hitting the ball back and forth over the net with the use of their hands while sepak takraw is a game played by kicking the ball with the use of all body parts except from the hand. Volleyball can be played within 5 sets, each first 4 sets is composed of 25 points to win a certain set, the last set is often called ‘tie breaker’ and is composed of only 15 points to win the match. When both teams tied at 14 points on the 5th set, the first team who got 2 points ahead will be proclaimed as the winner. While in sepak takraw, it is played only on 3 sets, each set is composed of 21 points. First team who win 2 sets is the winner. The 3rd set is also called ‘tie breaker’ and composed of only 15 points.

BEACHVOLLEY AND VOLLEYBALL One is played on the beach, while the other takes place in a gymnasium. In addition, indoor volleyball has a larger court with six players per side, while beach is played with only two players on each team. One of the main differences between the two types of balls is that outdoor balls are stitched and indoor balls are molded. According to 10-facts-about. com, Volleyball is the second to the most poupular sport in the world today, exceeded only by soccer. Moreso, this game was first called mintonette at first but it was later changed to volleyball. Beachvolley was only included in Olympics in 1996 and the United States had won every beachvolley tournament since it was launched for both men and women category. With indoor volleyball, a match consists of five sets, or games. The first team to reach 25 points wins the set. Three sets wins the match, and the fifth tiebreaker set, if necessary, is only played to 15 points. Teams switch sides after every game. In beach volleyball, a match consists of a series of best-ofthree game, with each game played to 21 points. Two sets wins the match, and the third tiebreaker set, if necessary, is also played to 15 points.
SOFTBALL AND BASEBALL Softball and baseball are two variants of the same game, with a few differences. Both baseball and softball utilize a round ball, a round bat and a glove. Both sports involve a pitcher throwing the ball to a batter with the hopes of getting him or her "out." Both sports play a certain number of innings and both sports require three outs to end the inning. Women's team playing fast-pitch softball and men's teams playing baseball. Both sports use balls, bats and gloves, the size of each differs. Because a softball is significantly bigger than a baseball, those who play softball use bigger gloves and, often, thinner bats. Both sports are played on a field that includes a diamond-shaped, usually dirt, infield and a grass-covered outfield. The size of the diamond, however, differs The distance from home plate to the outfield fences is much shorter in softball, it being more difficult to hit a softball the same distance as a tightly wound baseball. A casual viewer of baseball and softball can immediately recognize a difference in pitching styles in the two sports. A pitcher in baseball throws the ball overhand and a pitcher in softball throws the ball underhand. Baseball pitchers throw from an elevated mound. Softball pitchers throw from a surface level with that of the batter. The softball pitching area is much closer to the batter than the baseball pitching area.
RUGBY AND FOOTBALL
Both a rugby game and a game of American football, the most obvious difference between the two is the player’s equipment. Rugby players wear a kit not dissimilar to a soccer player, with a shirt, shorts and socks and occasionally a scrum cap, which looks a bit like a shower cap but with a bit of padding on it. American football is a game played between two teams and consists of 11 players in each of the two teams, with unlimited substitutions. American football is a game of intense physical play with complex strategy to score points by advancing the ball to the opponent team’s end-zone. Rugby is best described as a blend of the contact of American football, the running of soccer, and the transition of basketball. It is a game played between two teams with 15 players in each, played on a rectangular field, with the object being to run with an oval ball across the opponent’s goal line or kick it through the upper portion of the goal posts. vvv
