For implementation of orderliness and recognition of every colleges, Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPUSCC) organized a uniform decorum for each department, effective for Academic Year 2014-2015.

The College of Computer Studies of LSPU Santa Cruz Campus opened its newly offered course, the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS), starting this First Semester, Academic Year 2014 – 2015.

BSCS was first offered

by LSPU Siniloan Campus and its curriculum was eventually adopted by LSPU San Pablo City Campus last academic year. This was followed by LSPU Santa Cruz Campus and LSPU Los Banos Campus just this year.

CHED Memorandum Order No. 53, series of 2006, stated that Computer Science is an Information Technology Education (ITE) Program focused on concepts, theories, algorithmic foundation, implementation and application of information and computing solutions. Its objective is to prepare students to be IT professionals and researchers and to become proficient in designing and developing computing solutions. It also states that all the possible jobs

or career path is to become an Application Developer, Database Programmer and Designer, Information Security Engineer, System Developer, System Analyst, Computer Science Instructor and Researcher.

The first batch of BSCS at LSPU-SCC consisted of 21 male and 25 female students with the total of 46 students grouped in one section.

“Computer Science focuses on the development of software and algorithm while Information Technology focuses on the software that a Computer Science made. In short, Computer Science is more on software and Information Technology is more on hardware,” stated by CCS Associate Dean, Mr. Enrico R. Rivano. ***

Dubbed with the theme “Kalamidad Paghandaan: Gutom at Malnutrisyon Agapan!”, Laguna State Polytechnic UniversitySCC celebrated this year’s Nutrition Month to promote nutritious food awareness and information dissemination on health related issues, joined by pre-elementary, elementary, secondary and tertiary level, held at Multipurpose Hall and Gymnasium, July 31.

This celebration comprised of different activities that includes Costume Parade from different grade levels, hand-washing demonstration and sanitation for elementary level, Slogan Making contest for tertiary level and Blood-Pressure Checking exclusively for LSPU professors.

As the celebration ended, two students from every grade levels received cash prices for winning best in costume category.

Likewise, the College of Teacher Education won the Slogan Making Contest category. The College of Nursing and Allied Health and College of Hospitality, Management and Tourism are the host of this year’s Nutrition Month. ***

Having a total increase of 9.4% compared with the last Academic Year, the Laguna State Polytechnic UniversitySanta Cruz Campus recorded a total of 8,831 enrollees as the Office of the Registrar released its official tally for the first semester.

The College of Engineering (COE) gained the most number of enrollees with 1,728 (19.58%) of the total students. College of Teacher Education (CTE) ranked second as they registered an average increase of (15.76%) and a total of 1,410 (15.97%).

From last year’s second place, the College of Industrial Technology (CIT) moved down to third as they got a total of 1,316 (14.90%). Meanwhile, College of Computer Studies (CCS) holds the fourth spot again with 1,021 (11.56%) of the total enrollment.

Moreover, College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) ranked fifth having a total of 817 (9.25%).

In addition, they got an average increase of 12.23%. College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) ranked sixth having a total of 809 (9.16%) enrollees. They also got the highest increase of enrollees

With the theme “IELPC: Develops Language Skill and Fosters a Community of Global Citizens,” Laguna State Polytechnic UniversitySanta Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC) held the 17th Commencement Exercises for Intensive English Language Proficiency Course (IELPC) for Changwoon Moonsung University students at CHMT Function Hall, July 24.

A total of 23 Korean Students, namely: Yun Ye Gi, Kim Na Young, Shin Moon Kyu, Hwang Cheol Hyun, Kim Young Ju, Jo Dong Woo, Lee Seung Jun, Cheon So Hyeon, Jeong Woo Seop, Kim Seon Gi, Kim Ji Eun, Kim Ji Su, Song Eun Jeong, Lee Soo Kyeong, Jung Eun Bi, Hwang Ki Cheol, Kim Da Hui, Han Sung Ju, Lee Ji Eun, Kim Su Rin, Bae Jeong Eun, Kim Ki Suk and Kim Ji Hyun have undergone one-month Intensive English Language Proficiency course to develop their oral proficiency skills in English Language and completed the said program.

They arrived together with their two professors, Prof.

NATIONAL NEWS Typhoon ‘Glenda’ assails Laguna By | Ma. Xena Bautista

Suspension of a weeklong class has been a huge trouble to the campus including the destruction of glass doors and windows at the Library and Administration bBuilding, wreckage of some part of the Activity Center and the uprooting of trees as Typhoon Glenda (Rammasun) made a landfall mostly to the Southern Tagalog region, killing seven lives, damaging 11,000 establishments and totally vanishing 2,000 houses all over the province of Laguna, July 15-19.

Trees, coconut plantations and rice fields were devastated

by Typhoon Glenda, the main reason behind the massive lost of livelihood here in the province. Damaged houses were not only the problems but also lost power, no internet connection and poor network signals for several days.

National Housing Authority (NHA) homes in Site 3 in Calauan, Laguna toppled over like dominos, their roofs caved in and their bright, green concrete walls leaning against neighboring houses. The families received P5,000 each as financial assistance from NHA to help them start rebuilding their houses.

Vice President Jejomar Binay announced the financial aid during his visit last July 19 on Bay, Laguna. Joey Salgado, Binay’s spokesperson, on July 21 confirmed Binay’s visit to Bay town, five other Laguna municipalities and Calamba City to “inform” residents about the assistance. The other towns were Calauan, Nagcarlan, Rizal, Alaminos and Liliw. ***

Laguna establishes 1st Teen Center

As part of Vice President Jejomar C. Binay’s itinerary in his recent visit in the province of Laguna, he had a stop-over in the municipality of Pila, Laguna, July 29.

After attending a mass at Sto. Sepulcro Church and served as a guest of honor in the groundbreaking rites for the construction of a new church in Barangay Landayan, San Pedro City, Laguna, he proceeded to Pila, Laguna to lead the inauguration and blessing of Pila Municipal Lying-in Clinic. He also unveiled the perspective plan

of Pila Museum Rehabilitation Project in Barangay Poblacion.

Then, he went to Kenyo Garden Resort in Barangay Labuin with the Mayor’s League of Laguna to hold a housing caravan for Pila’s affected residents by typhoon Glenda which damaged their properties.

To promote health and relevant social issues and concerns, the Provincial Population Office (PPO) promoting the program thrusts of Commission on Population (POPCOM) in partnership with various stakeholders addressing the Population Development (POPDEV) established its first Teen Center.

The Municipality of Pangil, Laguna was awarded second place in 2013, Rafael M. Salas Population and Development Award (RMSPDA) because of its outstanding contribution to Philippine Management Program last March 2014 and was given plaque plus the prize to be used to begin the Adolescent Friendly Teen Center.

Each batch of examinee was given 45 minutes to answer the 60 item questionnaire. It was

first held in Jacobo Z. Gonzales Memorial National High School, July 5 (Saturday) a total of 3,851 college students from Laguna 1st District took the qualifying examination.

As the examination for 1st district ended, the second day (July 6) examination was next given to 4,710 college students from Laguna 2nd district conducted at Calamba Elementary School Central II in Calamba City.

Moreover, the following schedule is for the District 3, District 4-A and 4-B.Started from July 12 in Siniloan Laguna, July 13 in San Pablo City, and July 19 in Sta. Cruz.

The result for the said examination was announced on August 2014 by the Office of the Provincial Administrator.***

Aiming for a successful International OffCampus Student Teaching, ten (10) Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) major in English students from Laguna State Polytechnic University Santa Cruz and San Pablo City Campus were chosen to teach at Thai Nguyen University (TNU), Socialist Republic of

Vietnam, May 27.

The contingent flew few days before the beginning of the academic year. There were five student teachers from SCC, namely Krisjan Hortal, Jeric Roy, Sunshine Apolinar, April Caunin and Kristel Ann Vidal, while the other five student teachers from SPCC were Jherwin Cabrera, June Eur Tolentino, Daisy

Alcantara, Michelle Caponpon and Veronica Sy. They will undergo practice teaching from June – November 2014.

Meanwhile, the second batch of student teachers is already preparing themselves to fulfill their designated task when they go to Vietnam soon after the first batch returns. ***

Aiming to familiarize Information Technology nd Computer Science students, the College of Computer Studies (CCS) of Laguna State Polytechnic University hold its annual orientation for all freshmen together with their parents held at the University Multi-Purpose Gymnasium and Hall., June 11.

Parents, teachers and students were all present during this activity. The program started with opening remarks coming from CCS Assoc. Dean Enrico R. Rivano, immediately followed by the introduction of faculty members and staff, as well as student organization officers.

BS Chemistry students are required to wear light brown buttoned polo with black cuffs and black slacks for males. Females, on the other hand, wear light brown long-sleeved buttoned polo with black cuffs, black slacks and black heels/flats. BS Math students also wear light brown long-sleeved buttoned polo with black placket, black slacks and black heels/flats for females.

BS Biology students wear a white blouse with blue accents, white slacks and white rubber shoes for both males and females. BS Broadcasting students, wear pale brown buttoned polo, black slacks for males and pale yellow longsleeved buttoned blouse, highwaist skirts and black flats/heels for females. BS Psychology wears a white polo, white slacks and white rubber shoes on their Clinical Wear and blue vest, white polo, blue slacks and black shoes for their Corporate Wear intended for both males and females. CAS departmental shirt consisted of a white polo with red collar and red-black accents.

The said etiquette was also followed on College of Computer Studies (CCS) students.

BS Information Technology is obliged to wear blue buttoned polo, black slacks and black shoes for males and light blue v-neck shirt, gray slacks and black flats for females.

On other hand, BS Computer Electronics students are required to wear blue green long-sleeved buttoned polo with black cuffs, black slacks and black shoes for both males and females. CCS Departmental Shirt is composed of white polo with red accents.

CTE Departmental Shirt is composed of fuchsia pink polo with yellow collar and yellow-green accents.

The said regulation also takes in College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) students. The said students are required to wear pale blue buttoned polo, pale blue slacks, black belt, and police shoes for both males and females. CCJE’s Departmental Shirt is composed of black-maroon collared shirt.

College of Business Management and Accountancy (CBMA) also follow the said decorum. Students are required to wear yellow long sleeved buttoned polo with yellow cuffs, black slacks and black shoes for both males and females. CBMA’s Departmental Shirt is composed of black-yellow collared shirt.

College of Industrial Technology (CIT) students wear Academic Uniform every day except Wednesday.

Departmental Shirt is composed of white collared polo shirt with black-blue gear accent.

College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) uniform decorum is composed two attires: (1) Corporate Attire and (2) Casual Attire. Corporate Attire is worn during Monday and Friday and Casual Attire is worn during Tuesday and Thursday. Students are required to wear red longsleeved buttoned polo with black cuffs, black slacks, black vest,

and black shoes for males and red long-sleeved buttoned polo with black cuffs, black skirts, black vest, and black heels for females as Corporate Attire.

Afterwards, the Audio Visual Presentation focused on LSPU Nutshell and Scholarship was played. Financial Aid Officer, Mrs. Melissa Rose Tupas presented the Expanded Students’ Grantsin-Aid Program for Poverty Alleviation and Ms. Jhohanna A. Acebes (IPDO ESGP-PA, Regional Focal) explained about the ESGP-PA Background, Objectives and Expectations.

Then, the Pledge of Commitment of the Representatives from both ESGP-PA grantees and parents was held after.

Lastly, an open forum was held and Dr. Mario C. Pasion, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, ended the program with his closing statement. ***

Dean Marissa L. Dimarucot of the College of Business Management and Accountancy delivered her opening remarks and introduced the CBMA faculty members to the attendees.

The main purpose of the event is to let students socialize with their other classmates and schoolmates.

In return for the community, The Gears Publication conducted an Outreach Program through giving free seminar workshop on Campus Journalism to the elementary students of Kabubuhayan Elementary School, Calumpang, Nagcarlan, Laguna, July 26.

The outreach program was composed of lectures on various disciplines of campus journalism and the workshop for the students right after the lecture of each journalism discipline.

The Gears Editor-inChief Glessa Rose Janolino discussed the topics about News Writing and Editorial Writing. Cymark Avena, News Editor tackled about Copy Reading and Headline Writing.

Cristina Trinidad, Feature Editor discussed the Feature Writing.

Meanwhile, Banjo Ventolero, The Gears Associate Editor and Jon Aldrin Garcia, Junior Photojournalist rendered the topics in Sports Writing and Photojournalism, respectively.

The outreach ended through awarding of certificates to the winners and participants.

It was the first outreach program conducted of The Gears for the first semester of this year.

Further, the seminar workshop also served as the training for the students of Kabubuhayan who will participate on the Division Press Confab some time in October.

As part of the Office of Student Affairs and Services’s (OSAS) annual activity, the Supreme Student Council (SSC) spearheaded the General Orientation Program held at the Multi-Purpose Gymnasium and Hall, June 16-17.

The event was attended by students from different colleges which comprised of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Business Management and Accountancy (CBMA), College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE), College of Computer Studies (CCS), College of Hospitality, Management and Tourism (CHMT), College of Industrial Technology (CIT), College of Engineering (COE), College of Nursing and Allied Health (CONAH) and the College of Teacher Education (CTE).

The orientation was divided into a two-day activity.

Both started with the program opened by Dr. Roberto C. Miranda, Campus Director of LSPU-SCC.

Despite the aftermath of typhoon Glenda which created a massive destruction to parts of Laguna, the province managed to celebrate its 443rd Foundation Anniversary held at the Cultural Center of Laguna, July 29.

The simple program was headed by Laguna’s new Governor, Hon. Ramil L Hernandez, together with his colleagues. As part of the celebration, Hernandez gave his weekly message wherein he stressed some of his major plans, as well as accomplishments that his new administration already achieved.

First on his list was the on-going operation for the victims of the recent calamity that caused thousands of casualties to the province. Governor Hernandez also gave an update regarding on how the distribution of goods was made. He also mentioned that the relief operation team had setup two repacking centers --one in Laguna Provincial Hospital in Calamba City and one in Santa Cruz to serve Districts 1 and 2, as well as Districts 3 and 4, respectively. The Governor also extended burial assistance worth Php10,000 for the victims of the said calamity. Lastly, he included in his speech that he’ll be giving anniversary bonus, in addition to the productivity bonus for the year 2013.

As the new academic year started, Laguna State Polytechnic University – Santa Cruz Main Campus initiated its participation for this year’s LiGa ng Kapaligiran, June 2014.

Linis at Ganda ng Kapaligiran or commonly known as Li-Ga ng Kapaligiran is a recognized environmental project of the Extension Services and Linkages Unit of this

University by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The said activity was being participated by different colleges which include College of Teacher Education (CTE), College of Industrial Technology (CIT), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Computer Studies (CCS), College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT), College of Nursing and Allied Health (CONAH), College of Engineering (COE), College of Business Management and Accountancy (CBMA) and College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE).

activities regarding this matter.

Regular classroom beautification and maintenance were being implemented. Meanwhile, CAS had done a tree planting activity at Pila, Laguna. Further activities were already planned by other colleges for the whole academic year.

Aside from the abovementioned ones, Li-Ga ng Kapaligiran mainly implies three component projects; (1) maintenance of plant box along the 0.8 km fence, (2) annual competition for the Most Beautiful and Cleanest area, and (3) reforestation activity. uality service mirrors the institution, and a productive institution mirrors the leaders.

True as the adage goes for an institution like the Laguna State Polytechnic University-Santa Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC) who was recently recognized as one of the top performing State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in CALABARZON. And for that, it was really two thumbs up not only for the administration, but to the whole institution as well.

The growth of LSPU in most aspects as an institution – a prestige and premier university in CALABARZON in particular, is now becoming more evident. Constructions of new buildings equipped with state of- the art equipment and modernized archetype is just one example.

Perhaps, it’s just one plot out of several plans that was accomplished by the incumbent administration, yet it created an enormous impact on the progress of LSPU. True to its mission: “LSPU provides quality education through responsive instruction, distinctive research, sustainable extension and production services for improved quality of life towards nation building,” truly, LSPU is really taking a big leap towards achieving its mission.

Second, the new and first ever constructed university fitness center which allows students and even faculty to use for free. Infant as it was, fitness center still lack fitness machine and other health equipment, for it had been just less one year of construction, but enough to accommodate students’ needs.

Taking back a year ago, the plan of constructing the fitness center for the sports development and wellness of students was first announced on the public during the opening ceremony of the Sports Fest 2013. What a speedy mobilization of the project, wasn’t it?

LSPU despite of its effort to continuously develop the campus in terms of infrastructures, equipment had been destroyed by the consecutive typhoons that struck the country. The aftermath of the two consecutive typhoons , typhoon Glenda and Inday brought strong impact on the lives of many Filipinos which resulted of course to destruction of million worth of houses and properties, and worst case scenario of all, the casualties. Due to great devastation of many infrastructures and most of the power lines, the supply of electricity to almost one-third of Luzon was cut and therefore ensued to total black-out. Because of that, almost a week when classes in all levels in mostly affected areas in Luzon were announced cancelled, and LSPU is one of those.

Further, the disaster did not hinder the LSPU community to rise back again from its original picture – a clean and green campus, a home offering not just quality education, but also quality service and facility. With the concerted effort and strong will to rise, LSPU community had regained its momentum.

The yearly increasing rate of the enrolment and growing number of high calibre professors were an indication of the strong support of the University for their Professional Growth and development.

Concurrently, they’re taking their way, which of course give rise to productive and quality service they offered to the students, were just few to mention those indications of improvement of LSPU.

Moreover, not only in terms of infrastructure LSPU aimed for but also for the improvement of its curricular offerings which is tantamount to CHED agenda for SUCs. Its penultimate reason for improvement was to produce competent graduates who can find her/his place in the global work market. It was also in this context the mere fact of the forthcoming ASEAN 2015 in which the university was very much aware of.

We salute people behind the LSPU’s improvement, from the key officials of the university who worked hard each day for more projects for the welfare and betterment of the students and university.

Kudos, to the cohesive effort and determination of the professors, mentors, faculty, staff for providing valuable services to the students. Progress can truly be achieved if everyone in one direction aimed to reach out for the common objective.

It’s just one leap and still waiting for another to reach out another absolute gradation we are all looking into.***

Let me start my column by giving you my dear readers this one word. EQUILIBRIUM.

It’s not always as simply as solving any other mathematical or scientific problems through using various formula such as the Pythagorean Theorem of Pythagoras in Geometry A2 + B2 = C2 or the Relativity Theory of Einstein in Physics E = mc2. However, it’s not also as complicated as factoring algebraic expressions like y2 – 2xy + x2 = y - x and balancing chemical equations in Chemistry like 2Ca (OH)2 + Al2 (SO4)3 --> 3CaSO4 + Al2 (OH)3. In other words, it’s in the midpoint.

Okay. Let me clear one thing. I am not inclined on mathematical or numerical abilities. Actually, mathematics is my frustration. Either way, I’m not taking any Engineering course.

I’m actually taking business course. So by now, I bet, one thing is bothering you right now.

What’s the point of explaining all of these?

As we grow older, we come to the point wherein we realize various things. Maybe that’s the common part of becoming mature. We tend to change our perception and mind set on certain things. However, that doesn’t mean that if we had this turning point of perception, we will also likely to have a better one. Definitely not! Well, if you understand my point, then you are matured enough, and if not, it’s the other way around.

Newton’s third law of motion, the Law of Interaction which states that, “In every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction.” It’s also like the causeand-effect relationship of things.

Whatever you do to others would somehow happen to you. And since we are now on the digital age, others call it ‘digital karma’.

Likewise, in school, we often experience those scenarios which we felt awkward or should I say biased feeling. We tend to choose one over another; we tend to do one over another and alike instances. For what reason? Can we say it’s because we just want to? Obviously, not! In everything we do, there’s a reason behind.

-Matt. 15:11 all we can see are the different maladies that slowly crippling our economy. And the worst thing of it is that, bigger part of this came from the people in the government itself. Corruption of public funds, insurgency, side by side killings, and the rest more.

I don’t want to put prejudice on the line. What I’m trying to input here is most of the time we are encountering different stories and issues which are really cliché to all of us. And in order to give new taste or at least just add vigor to my last column in broadsheet, I chose this topic.

It’s not what goes inside

Word is considered a powerful medium. It can start a flame, it can kill, it can punish, it can grace, it can destroy, it can create, and it can do anything.

As a writer, a student journalist in particular, words are great part of me. It is my lifetime buddy. Well, in fact, it’s our lifetime buddy.

Whenever I speak of my mind, I used words to manifest my feelings toward certain issue.

On our world today, you are not belong when you are not aware with the current trends – from the latest gadgets, applications, fashion statements and the SNS or social networking sites. Today, we have on our SNS the facebook, twitter, Instagram, multiply, and many more. And most common we have is the facebook. Everyone has the access to it. You can post pictures or status, like, comment, share and even chat with anyone, you can do it all in facebook.

Let’s go back again on the word I gave you. Equilibrium.

This means balance or equal.

Sometimes we cannot escape from being chauvinist. We have preferences which resulted of course from being bias on a certain matter. In this world, we can’t deny that fact because we’re still in flesh. Nevertheless, we have to learn how to overcome that attitude.

To me, freedom is when each day passes, you were able to do the things you want without being forced by someone. Freedom is when you can voice out what you want to express and let it be heard. It is when you can do all things to achieve something.

It is when you were able to make a decision and choose for

yourselves. Freedom is when I can show who is the real me, what I like and what I don’t.

Freedom is accepting the things that you have and what you want to have. It allows me to choose what the best are for me.

Because of freedom, I can dream an impossible one and can turn it into possible for me. And freedom is your own choice not the others.

Now I know that you have the

ability to exercise your free will and make choices independently, but there is always a limitation; limitation when you exceeded the boundaries or when you did too much. With that, can we conclude that freedom is not free?

Lesser is Better

I was actually thinking of a nice topic or should I say a more mature subject that I’m going to share. Yeah, I want it to be more mature in a way that everybody would say, “Yup, it’s true!” or someone would exclaim, “I can feel you!”, after reading this article. Of course, this would be my last shot to open up something on a newspaper so I want it to be more memorable as possible. So I guess this topic, which is just a collection of random thoughts, will definitely satisfy your mind.

Let’s start.

Let me ask you a simple question. “Have you ever expected something from anyone?” It could be a new gadget from your mom, bags and shoes as a birthday gift, attention from your long-time crush or even that so-called love from a special person. I’m pretty sure you’re answer would be yes, am I right?

Who wouldn’t? Frankly speaking, I also expect something from other people. I mean as of now, I was expecting for a good Samaritan who will hand me a brand new IPhone, though it

seems really impossible. Still, it’s just an expectation and there is nothing wrong with that. But seriously, all of us expect and it is definitely a normal thing to feel that way. But sometimes, expectation wasn’t good at all, most especially if you expect more than the usual. Then next thing you’ll know is that expectation turned out to be distraction.

When you’re still young, you used to have those kid stuffs like candies, toys, clothes and so much more.

where in Filipinos worked hard for it, still, we have the enough knowledge to limit ourselves from exceeding. Freedom of choice, freedom of self-expression and freedom of choosing religion are just few examples that need to be defended and protected in terms of individual freedom. It is perhaps my main purpose why the idea of freedom is not free came up to my mind.

That aforementioned notion is always a matter in our country, institution or even in a small group of people when they go over in freedom as it sometimes became the basic reason when there is discrimination or an act of inequality exists. It is not fair for us when someone abused freedom; to have the power for themselves.

Freedom will not always give you the best result for something you desire. It may also cause you something that your parent doesn’t want for you.

It is not always there because freedom can make you a different

person. Freedom is not always free as there is sometimes that you won’t able to do something for you. A human life might change when freedom was mishandled especially on today’s generation.

Being a student too, I also encountered the same thing.

So as part of being a positive person, we are hoping that everything will fall out the way we want it to. That everything we had planned will come up to be a successful one. Just like this, if you are joining an international competition, your mind set is to win and bag the gold medal out of it. Then, that is expectation.

If you return a purse with onehundred thousand pesos, you’re actually thinking of a reward as

a return favor for your kindness towards other people. Again, that is expectation. If you are giving your full attention and affection to that special someone, then you’ll be expecting for the same affection you had given. Yet, it’s still an expectation. See? Those cited situations are just few examples of those ‘I-amexpecting’ moments that an average person may encounter.

8 Communicating nowadays is as easy as 1+1=2.

Before, people would reach each other through calls and phone messages but it don’t stop there. We usually don’t get proper signals and receive late messages that’s why Computer Programmers and Developers invented a new way and a faster way of communication- thru Social- Networking. Not only for a better way of interaction with other people but also for a more effective strategy to disseminate pieces of information. These social networking sites can be risky to teenagers but if it is used properly, these sites can give positive effects to adolescents.

Before Skype and Facebook, the Yahoo Company first introduced the Video Calls. It was a good way of communicating to other places and countries. It was widely used by our OFWs to reach their families here.

But aside from these benefits, there’s always somebody who would abuse using this kind of service. This Yahoo Messenger (YM) becomes a way of selling

Being a young Christian country, we believed that it is obliged to follow and respect our parents as what the 10 Commandments entails. In so doing, parents are great factors in molding and producing such a morally and intellectually oriented individual. Parents are the roots of the future generation and they have the right to intervene with every decision their children are going to make.

We, the younger

race, might see our parents as hindrances to those things that we’d love to do; partying, dating, leisure time and others.

They are usually overprotective in every aspect of our lives.

But sometimes we see those things in a negative way — no exemptions. However, it is written in Exodus, “Honor your father and your mother that you may have a long life in the land that God has given to you.” A promise of assurance had given that we

This promise isn’t literally what it means but rather it is referring on how our parents molded each of us to enjoy life and spend it to the fullest.

An individual is the exact image of his home. As young people, what we do on outside premises is the reflection of how we are being raised by our parents. “We should be an extension of our parents’ noble character.” It is mentioned on

Discussions there pertains that we should consider and continue to work on the good deeds of our parents. It is badly true that what we do usually mirrors back to our parents. If we always take for granted what our parents trying to initiate unto us “don’t do this… don’t do that…” probably, we would find ourselves on the wrong track.

It is not always free but good things will arise in return. Freedom requires responsibility to each person for no one will abuse their own freedom. 6. Find quality in quantity

Shoot more than one photo of your subject. This is especially true in the digital era, not only because digital files can become corrupt. If you only took one shot and something goes wrong with technology, all is lost.

10. Just Smile

This should be an easy one. Just be kind and respectful.

Remember that not everyone wants to have their picture taken.

If you hear no, and it’s definitely no, don’t try to push someone, especially if you’re working in a culture other than your own. Just say thank you and walk away.

The best way to communicate is a smile.

The Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a science-fiction film that gave critical and commercial success. The plot revolves around from the collapse of civilization and every country in the world. Desperate leaders Malcolm (Jason Clarke) and Dreyfus (Gary Oldman) debate different strategies for dealing with threats of the apes was the upsurge of the new government of the generation of apes lead by Ceasar (Andy Serkis).

Andy Serkis leads the ape rebellion against humans in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, when koba give shoots on Ceasar’s chest which marked as the start of war. It was really like watching a wellevolved ape, an ape riding in a horse with a lethal weapon, hats off Matt Reeves. Although it’s hard to think that apes begin to overpower the human in the film, it was still entertaining.

BOOK REVIEWS

Whenever we love someone, we do not consider how long it will take and how long it will last. In other words, time never matters as long as we’re in love.

That was proven in the novel The Fault in Our Star written by one of the best-selling and award winning authors, John Green. Actually, it was serendipity when I first discovered the book. I just saw it on one social networking site and the cover got my attention because it’s so attractive.

The story is all about the two star-crossed lovers who are cancer patient, but still fighting in the name of love. The female lead character named Hazel Grace Lancaster while the male lead character named Augustus Water. The two never lost faith in love though they both know they have cancer and would die sooner.

Hazel and Augustus met at a Support Group where they also met friends who have same case as them. At first, Hazel wasn’t like attending to any Support Group but since her mom asked her, she compulsively attended to it. The story goes with the experience of the two lead characters as Augustus joined Hazel to Asterdam just to see Hazel’s favorite author, Peter Van Houten, the writer of the Imperial Affliction.

In the end, a huge turning points of the story happened. Want to know what? Just read the book and you’ll know.

Ang resort ay may dalawang pool kung saan hiwalay ang paliguan ng bata at matanda. Dinarayo ito ng mga turista lalo na tuwing bakasyon. Ang unang pamayanan ng Pakil ay itinatag ni Padre Pedro Bautista, isang misyonaryong Franciscano, noong taong 1588. Siya ay naging isang Santong Martir.

Ang Pakil ay naging isang baryo at bisita (bayang walang sariling pan) ng Paete noong 1602.

Noong taong 1670, ang dating kura ng Sta. Ana, Maynila na si Padre Frandsco Barajas ay nagmisyon sa mga tao sa kabundukan ng Tanay hanggang bumaba sa baybayin ng Laguna at nakarating sa Pakil Sa sipagat tiyaga ni Padre Barajas, ang Pakil ay naihiwalay sa Paete noong ika-12 ng Mayo 1676 at binigyan ng pagsasari at pananagutan bilang isang bayan. Ang unang naging Kapitan ay si Diego Jorge at ang unang naging Kura ay si Padre Barajas.

Ang Pakil ay nagsarili mula 1899 hanggang 1903 at ang unang naging Presidente Federal, mula 1899 hanggang 1901, ay si G. Bemardo Gonzales. Si G. Gonzales ang siya ring naging Presidente Municipal mula 1901 hanggang 1903.

Ang Pakil ay ibinalik bilang baryo ng Paete noong ika-12 ng Oktubre 1903 at milipat sa pagiging baryong Pangil noong ika-25 ng Nobyembre 1903. Ang Pakil ay napaanib sa Pangil hanggang 1927.

Naging ganap na bayan ang Pakil noong ika-1 ng Oktubre 1927 sa bisa ng Utos Pampangasiwaan Bilang 77 (Setyembre 9, 1927), na sinundan ng Utos Pampangasiwaan Bilang 91 (Disyembre5,1927).

Ang unang naging Presidente Municipal ay si Gelacio Galleros na nanungkulan hanggang ika-27 ng Oktubre lamang dahil siya ay biglang dinapuan ng karamdaman na naging sanhi ng kanyang kamatayan Humalili sa kanya si Emeterio de Ramos. Ang unang naging Alkalde Municipal ay si Ciriaco Gonzales na nanungkulan mula 1932 hanggang 1937.

Ang bayan ng Pakil ay napasailalim ng mga Hapon noong Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig at lumaya noong ika-5 ng Abril 1945.

The Historical Monument

Ang Pakil ngayon ay may 13 barangay. Anim ang nasa poblacion: Bano, Burgos/Gonzales. Rizal. Taftat Tavera. Anim din ang nasa kabilang ibayo ng dagat: Banilan, Casa Real, Casinsin, Dorado, Kabulusan at Matikiw. Ikalabing-tatlo ang Saray na nasa bundok ng Sierra Madre.

Ang Pakil ay may sukat na 4,649.77 hektarya. Noong l990, ang populasyon ay bumilang nang 13,455 katao. Ang populasyong botante noong 1991 ay bumilang nang 7,899.

The Religious Relics

Ilan lang yan sa aming mga nabanggit buhat ng umakyat kami sa bundok. Napakahirap talaga pumunta sa lugar na iyon ngunit nang aming marating ay masasabi kong worth it ang hirap, gutom at panginginig ng aking mga paa sapagkat napakaganda ng Mt. Ping-as at maihahalintulad mo talaga sa isang paraiso.

Ayon sa nakausap namin, ang krus ay inilagak noong 1671 ni Fr. Francisco Solier at di naglaon ay pinalitan ng konkretong krus at bago makarating sa bundok na ito ay madadaanan mo ang 14 Stations of the Cross.

Tinawag itong Mt. Ping-as sapagkat noon ay may nagpiping-as sa krus at sinasabing nagmilagro ito at nagpagaling ng may sakit. Simula Sta. Cruz ikaw ay babyahe sa Jeep na Siniloan at sabihin sa driver na ikaw ay ibaba sa boundary ng Paete at Pakil mayroong daan doon at iyong makikita ang mga salitang “Ahunan sa Mt. Ping-as” diretsuhin mo lang daan at mararating mo ang Mt. Ping-as. Kung ikaw naman ay magmumula sa Rizal bumaba ka sa Pakil town plaza o di kaya sa Simbahan mayroon rin ditong daan papunta sa bundok. Mas madali dito sapagkat ilang oras lamang ay iyo na itong mararating.

Itinayo ito noong1957 sa pangangalaga ni Dr. Jose Kamatoy at noong panahong iyon ay namumuno din sa Laguna Provincial Hospital sa Sta. Cruz.

Matapos ang 2 oras naming paglalakad ay narating

naming ang Arko ng Mt. Ping-as ngunit tumigil muna kami sa isang bahay upang makiinum at dito naming natuklasan na may isang Resort doon na kasalukuyang ginagawa, ito ay pagaari ni Cesar Dalena. Napakaganda sa lugar na iyon sapagkat kitang kita ang magagandang lugar mula sa ibaba at ang sarap ng sariwang hangin na pumapalibot dito. Sa paglabas namin sa gate ng resort ay makikita ang napakalaking imahe ni Mama Mary, lubos akong nahalina sa itsura nito at di ko maiwasan na kunan ng camera sapagkat ang pagkakaukit ay perpekto at makikita mo ang emosyon ni Mama Mary siguro kung ang imahe ay mas pinalaki pa iyong masasaksihan ang paghiga ni Jesus sa kandungan niya at kung gaano kamahal ng isang ina ang kanyang anak. Akala ko andito na kami ngunit hindi pala, bago kapa makapunta sa pinakang tuktok ay aakyatin mo muna ang 300 stairs na medyo maputik. Pagdating namin sa tuktok ay makikita sa harap ang isang altar kung saan nakapwesto ang Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de Turumba. Kitang kita mula sa itaas ang Lawa ng Laguna at kagandahan ng lugar.

Kahit na mainit ay hindi alintana sapagkat mayroong mga puno at halaman na nagbibigay ng kaginhawahan sa lugar.

Masasabi ko na ang pamamasyal sa bayan ng Pakil

ay isa sa mga hindi ko makakalimutang pangyayari sa aking buhay at aking ipagmamalaki sa aking makasasalumuha.

Ikinagagalak at ipinagpapasalamat ko na kasama ko ang Gears sa pagpunta roon. Gusto mo bang marating ang lugar na iyon?

Habang binabasa ko ang kasaysayan na ito ay mas lalo akong nagkaroon ng interes na mamasyal sa bayan dahilan sa itinatago nitong hiwaga batay sa aking mga naririnig kilala ang Pakil sa Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de Turumba (“Our Lady of Sorrows of Turumba”). Kung kaya’t una naming pinuntahan ang Simbahan kung saan nakalagak ito.

Dito matatagpuan ang St. Peter of Alcantara Parish na mas kilala sa tawag na Diocesan Shrine of the Our Lady of Turumba, ito ang Pakil’s Roman Catholic Church at tahanan ng Our Lady of Sorrows de Turumba. Nang pumasok kami sa loob nakita ko ang mga Kasaysayan ng Pakil Church, Facade of Parochial Office, Original Painting of Our Lady of Turumba, Retablo of the Turumba Chapel, Retablo-mayor, Façade, Pulpito, Minor retablo with Crucified Christ.

Mayroon rin ditong Turumba Festival kakaiba ito sa mga pagdiriwang sapagkat ang mga may sakit ay sumasayaw sa prusisyon at sa pamamagitan nito sila ay naniniwalang gagaling sa kanilang karamdaman.

Matapos ang pagpunta sa simbahan ay pinuntahan naman namin ang Liceo de Pakil. Ito ay ipinagawa ng mga Maryknoll Fathers, noong ito ay Maryknoll Fathers High School na pinangasiwaan ng Maryknoll Fathers hanggang sa naging Maryknoll High School kung saan namuno ang Maryknoll Sisters lumipas ang panahon ito ay pinangalanan muli bilang Mary Immaculate Academy at di naglaon ay naging Liceo de Pakil at pinamumunuan ngayon ng Diocese ng San Pablo at Missionary Catechists of St. Therese. Ang paaralan ay matatagpuan malapit sa simbahan.

Sumunod naman na makikita ay ang sa Rizal Street, Pakil, Laguna. Php 1,500/ night of stay maganda sa lugar na ito, 3 minutes na paglalakad mula sa simbahan at town plaza, 5 minutes walk naman sa Beatles Place Restaurant. Kapag ikaw ay inabot ng gabi maari kang mag stay in dito, convenient at kumpleto ito sa mga gamit na iyong kailangan mura na at kayang kaya pa ng bulsa.

Kilala rin ang Pakil sa mga sikat na Restaurant isa na rito ang The Beatles Place na matatagpuan sa Bano Street. Masasarap ang mga pagkain at hindi ka magsawang pumunta dito. Malapit ito sa Nuestra Senora de los Dolores de Turumba swimming pool ang nagmimilagrong tubig ng Pakil. Para sa mga maliliit na handaan katulad ng reunions, birthdays, seminars ang Beatles place ang pinakamagandang lugar.

Sa kabilang banda, matatagpuan din ang E & R Handicrafts sa 175 Tavera Street. Sikat ito dahil sa angking galing sa paggawa ng mga wood products. Sa pagpasok mo sa tindahan ay makikita mo ang isa sa kanilang empleyado at sa loob ng 20 minutos ay kayang gumawa ng isang swan, ibon o anghel na gawa sa kahoy.

Mayroon rin ditong ospital ang General Cailles Memorial District Hospital na matatagpuan sa Tavera Street, Ang Pakil ay isa sa mga kauna-unahang nagtayo ng ospital sa buong Laguna.

Habang patuloy sa pagsigaw ang ina nila ay patuloy rin ang palalagay nito ng tela at bulak sa parteng bewang nito. Kasabay nito ay ang pagtawag niya sa pangalan ng kanyang mga anak. “Nap at Kin! Nasaan na kayo?! Hirap na hirap na si Mommy oh! Wala pa si Darla oh! Nagbe-bleeding love na ‘ko eh! Tulong! Nap at Kin! Nap at Kin! Nap, Kiiiiin!” Sigaw nito na tanging mga kapit-bahay lamang nito ang nakaka-rinig.kasamaaang palad, ay namatay ang ina nina Nap at Kin dahil sa pagod sa pag-sigaw. How sad!

Namatay ito na hawak-hawak ang telang may bulak at dugo.

Dahil hindi alam ng mga tao kung ano ang tawag sa telang iyon ay inakala nilang “Nap at Kin” ang tawag rito, base na rin sa narinig nila bago mamatay si Carefree na sa kalauna’y tinawag na Napkin. The term ‘Li-Ga ng Kapaligiran’ is derived from the local term ‘linis’ (clean) and ‘ganda’ (beauty) which is the essence of the said project. Through this, the entire LSPU system conducts its environmental-social aids in propagating the pros of maintaining the cleanliness, orderliness and preservation of surrounding in the spirit of service to Motherland and Humanity.

This is subordinated into three stages, wherein it is cooperatively done not only by the Li-Ga ng Kapaligiran faculty but also by the entire LSPU system. These are as follows: (1) Construction of plant box along the 0.8 km fence, (2) Annual competition for the Most Beautiful and Cleanest area, and (3) Embarking on Reforestation Activity which is participated by the different colleges.

This different colleges such as the College of Teacher Education, College of Industrial Technology, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Computer Science, College of Hospitality Management and Tourism, College of Nursing and Allied Health, College of Engineering and College of Criminal Justice Education work in accordance for the welfare of the biodiversity.

On the first stage of the scheme, the said colleges is assigned on their plant plots to be maintained

regularly. It is planted with uniform ornamental plants and landscaped with various stones and crafts with the assistance of the Bureau of Fire Department of the Municipality of Santa Cruz for the painting of walls within the 0.8 km scale. This is made for the prevention of soil erosion since roots of a plant is reliable for the stranglehold of the soil deposits. Also, dilapidation of the fence will be prevented given that the plants will serve as a barricade against the fence’s railing.

An annual classroom beautification is also commenced as a part of the Li-Ga’s scheme. The highspirit colleagues would compete for the recognition as the cleanest and greenest field among others. This platform is good in view of the fact that having an eagerness of winning will help in making a stiff action for the sustainability of the hygiene and loveliness of our environment. Hit by the strong typhoon is one of the worst situations that could happen in our life. We can’t stop it, all we need to do is to accept and face it with full

Plastic is considered now as a big ton of waste for a faction of humans, who only do a fraction of help for his ecosystem. Knowing this gives me a heavy heart, for I have been also a factor of the breakage of our ecosystem.

Improper disposal of plastic bottles may lead to ozone layer thinning, climate change, soil acidity, land pollution and water pollution.

Converting plastic bottles into plastic chairs is a big benefit of recycling a ‘malleable menace’.

Plastic chairs are given for public schools that are deficient in some classroom facilities. This is a big help especially for those who aim high for their aspirations.

Laguna Lake. Definitely, the project was called the Laguna Lakeshore Expressway Dike which aims to provide highstandard highway that will speed up the traffic between the southern part of Metro Manila and Laguna, as well as a dike that would mitigate flooding in the western coastal communities along Laguna Lake.

Mag-iilang taon na rin noong hindi ko naranasan ang mga bagay na nakikita ko sa paligid ko at aaminin ko, unting-unti ko na ring nami-miss ang mga pangyayaring iyon sa buhay ko.

Nami -miss ko na ang mga panahong nagpupuyat ako para lang maka-text ka. Namimiss ko na ang mga kulitan natin sa Facebook. Namimiss ko na rin ang boses mo sa tuwing nag-uusap tayo. Nami-miss ko na ang mga panahong pinapasaya mo ako, yung pinapahid mo ang luha ko kapag nasasaktan na ako. Nami-miss ko ang bawat moment na pinagsamahan nating dalawa. Nami-miss ko na ang sumpaan natin sa isa’t isa –tayong dalawa lamang….FOREVER. Pero nasaan na ba ang pangakong iyon? Ganun lang ba kabilis ang FOREVER para sa iyo? Parang UNLI lang pala iyon… MAY EXPIRATION.

Tapos, heto naman akong si tanga…umasa sa bawat salitang binitawan mo? Huli ko nang nalaman na ang salita ay isa lamang salita –kailanman ito ay hindi magiging kasimtimbang ng gawa. Umasa lang naman kasi ako sa salita mo. Nagtiwala lang naman kasi ako sa iyo. Pinangakuan mo lang naman kasi ako. Hindi naman ako informed na tumatakbo ka palang pulitiko, puro pangako…panay naman napapako.

Hindi bale, makakalimutan rin naman kita eh. Darating rin ang araw na kapag nakita na kita… sasabihin ko sa iyo ang katagang “WHO ARE YOU.” Darating rin ang araw na isa ka na lamang ala-ala: isang mapait na ala-ala na nagturo sa akin sa ngayon. Football or soccer is the world’s most popular sport; it is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries. It is a sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball on a rectangular field with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by using any part of the body besides the arms and hands to get the football into the opposing goal. The goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms while it is in play and then only in their penalty area.

The first monument of Jose Rizal as a sportsman was built in Sta. Cruz Sports Complex, Sta. Cruz, Laguna and was unveiled during the 2014 Palarong Pambansa that was held at the place.It is a 25-foot tall monument depicting the Philippines’ national hero wearing an eskrima or fencing uniform and holding an eskrima sword in his right hand and a duel pistol in the left hand. Rizal was also a great man of sports. The Game Maker: Coach Zymoneth Ligoy story

A player, a fan and an enthusiast; Neth Ligoy, a thirty year old coach of the College of Engineering women’s volleyball team during the LSPU-Intramurals and LSPU-SCC lady spikers during LSPU Inter-campus. Coach Ligoy is an alumnus of Cavite State University (CavSU) in Indang. She is a former national athlete when she was still playing for her team as a Center Spiker or Middle Blocker. With her five foot six inches height and slender body she definitely has that looks of being a volleyball player before.

Outside the volleyball court, she is a loving wife of Mr. Sherwin Ligoy, also a coach from their Department in football. She also admitted that her boyfriend (before) is the one who inspired him to go here in our university. She may be an athlete and a coach but when it comes to her personal life she always make sure that there is a time for it.

From being a national athlete to a national coach, Coach Ligoy, on her three years of coaching the LSPU lady spikers may be considered as one of the finest coaches of today’s generation in CALABARZON. By just having all her learning’s and experiences before, she shared how she came into this kind of business. “Hilig ko talaga ang paglalaro ng volleyball, siguro blessings nadin na isinama ako ng boyfriend ko dito para magturo. Nagkataon namang walang coach ang women’s volleyball team kaya ako na ang kinuha nila para mag coach” an opportunity that she did not refused to grabbed which made her what she is right now.

As I asked her few more questions she told me that “Siguro hindi ko maituturing na competition yun, sa Intrams kase parang selection lang siya kung sino ang mga mapapasama sa team pag Inter-campus. Sa inter- campus naman yung rights ng pagiging coach ang pinaglalabanan jan, kung sino kase ang mag-champion, siya ang magcocoach sa LSPU kapag PASUC pero scouting parin yun. ‘Di ko padin siya tinuturing na competition” pertaining to the question about the competition in Intramurals and Inter-campus against their rivals.

She also added that in the world of volleyball she idolize “Wendy Anne Semana, Leila Barros and Mary Jean Balse”, “Wala akong ina-idolize na coach, nagsesearch ako sa internet para makakuha ako ng info. para sa sarili ko at para maituro ko sa mga batang hawak ko”.

But as a coach, it is usual for her to experience some hindrances that probably causes the performance of her team nonetheless she considered it as a motivation to perform better in every competition. “Kung titignan niyo yung facilities natin, yung pinag-tetrainingan naming ay ito sakto lang naman pero may support padin ang school” referring to the problems that she encountered in coaching. “Natutulungan din naman, everytime na may competition, lumalabas kami ng campus kapag training for exposure” her words about the support of the university to their team every time the competition was about to start.

It is tough for the sports persons in the country to overcome the expectations of people who support and believe

for this kind of treatment. In some instances, they blamed their supporters although they don’t know the story behind those things. The worse thing could happen possibly, when they were not able to form a team on the particular sports they were supposed to play. All they need is the support for them to improve their skills and for them to sustain their performance well. Guess this is the right time for them to be given concern by for the school, national and international sports for us to boost the quality of sports in the country.

Athletes though may be lacking in many aspects, they may not have best quality

Some of the Filipino players I know who succeeded after their career in sports were, Benjie Paras who took show business as a career as well as Onyok Velasquez and Efren “Bata” Reyes who also pursued coaching players of billiards; Robert Jaworsky who turned to be a Philippine senator and now a coach; Rudy Hatfield who is now ministering people and such more. See? An athlete can prove that there’s still more in them. Others also venture for businesses so after they retire they would have an investment for the future. See how our Pambansang Kamao, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao spent his reward to invest for the future.

You may think that I’ve given much example for professional athletes, but how about those athletes from schools, what comes after they’ve graduated? It’s just simple as this; those athletes who graduated from college and retired from playing were already successful. Do you wonder why?

Just think of how they were able to apply and get hired for their desired job because they already have their diplomas. Think how they were able to balance their studying and playing at the

same time. If I would be able to illustrate how one does two things at the same time, you would never understand, lest you do it. Some were doing doubled as that. Some players have their part time jobs while studying and playing. Some have to work for their families while studying and playing and many other cases.

But what benefit did they get from playing? Simple, they get scholarship from it because they play for the school. The school

Going back to my father’s story, I was indeed inspired by him while I was writing this article. It is because while he was telling it to me, his eyes were glistening. It was like he was replaying the moment when he first touched the spear on the javelin throw. It’s a strange feeling I felt when my father tells something about himself that I could be proud of. In the end, what comes after depends on how an athlete discovers his full potential not only on the sports he had endeavored but how he had felt it as if he was still on the field hitting or jumping and running for victory. It is on how he inspired other people with his own story, the story of his own career on playing because it’s the only thing that would not die in the heart of every athlete.***

What comes after?

Salute to a coach like her, even though she doesn’t have the best things for her team, still, she manages to bring the pride and glory to the university. With her story, it was really proven that in life, if you want to achieve something no one can stop you to pursue such things that you love. It is not a problem if you don’t have the ability because if there’s the will a n d the passion you can get it! You can be like it! ***

Drawn with passion in playing and driven through a sports-oriented family, Mr. John Kenneth Yano Roman, a fifth year BS Electronic and Communication Engineering student urged to make a distinction by representing their athletic crop in playing baseball.

Ascents. Throws. Tussles. It’s his last year of playing on the campus field but not on his entire sports career. Though their college team did not make it through the finals of baseball last Intramurals 2014, his spirit after the game was still remarkable. He’s humble and a true-blooded sports man whose able to accept defeat after loss. “Di naman kasi sa pagkatalo nakukuha yan, ang mahalaga experience, at saka manalo man o matalo inaaccept nalang namin kasi part ng laban yun e.”

Alongside, he isn’t just an average pitcher on the field. He recently achieved 2nd place on baseball together with his team on the yearly conducted Philippine Athletic State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) and baseball champion on the last year established inter-campus.

Baseball. It’s not just an ordinary sport to him. Since elementary, it has been his passion. He tried basketball and other sports but baseball is something different from the others. “Na-welcome ako sa baseball kasi nung nag-try ako ng basketball nung high school, hindi ko naramdaman na na-welcome ako.” He also added that he achieve something on baseball rather than on playing basketball. But he devotes time for basketball even if he’s achieving much for baseball. Evidence to this is his involvement on the yearly conducted barangay LIGAs in Gatid, Sta. Cruz, Laguna where he lives in. Playing these games also served as his bonding with his cousins who were also players of baseball inside the campus. His cousins who were baseball and softball players who also played for our campus were: Lois Samonteza. Kenneth’s friends and supporters yelled so loud when I asked him if he had cousins who were playing for the school and they shouted that all of them were cousins. It’s a different feeling I felt as his friends were very supportive of him. As what he told me, Lois is currently a softball player from the College of Engineering (COE). Lois’ team made it through the finals and became the champion of softball for this year’s Intramurals. He added also that he was so proud of what his cousin has achieved for their department.

Arlene B. Roman. An honest smile had shone on Kenneth’s face when he was telling me stories about his cousin Arlene. It is because Arlene was his inspiration in playing baseball for she was the one who influenced him in playing the game. She was a former softball player in our campus and she also became an umpire in the College of Computer Studies (CCS). At present, she was a fortified player from the Philippine Team. She was indeed a woman whom anyone could look up too and a pride of our school. She was a sports career woman because she never left sports hanging after she graduated from our university.

Jason Alon and Wilson Jara. The first year of Kenneth’s playing on the field did not become so hard because he got his cousins on his back. They were his seniors on baseball and they were the ones who taught and inspired him to play the game.

Spectacular, isn’t it? They were indeed pure-blooded baseball players playing for the sake of our university. They were the one whom everyone could look up to; especially those players who had their own pack of sports-oriented relatives.

Looking back, though Kenneth idolized all his cousins through playing, still there is this one man whom he idolized so much.

This man is the one who truly gave him the inspiration to play and to continue the fights of his life. The man I was referring to, is the man who could also play as what he plays, specifically, it is his father, a superintendent in an Electric Company in abroad who work hard just for them to finish their studies. Last year, he had experienced to almost fail on one of his subject because of playing. But because of his father, he is able to stand again. “Para sa mga baguhang manlalaro ipagpatuloy nyo lang ang paglalaro para sa unibersidad, pero wag nyong uunahin ang paglalaro kaysa sa pag-aaral” his advice to those aspiring players who wanted to prioritize playing than studying.

Without a doubt, an athlete like him is one of a kind. He is one of the best players in the College of Engineering. Hit it through the block!

It symbolized the student and professional athletes that beyond every problem, deficiency and lack of support, they were still able to stand and bring home recognition. The usual scenario for every Filipino athlete competing not only for themselves but also for the team they represent, still, cannot manage to get their needs.

A problem in the world of sports was passed from generations to generation through the athletes. A problem that was probably adapted off from the legendary athletes to this generation’s set of athletes.

On the recently concluded Intramurals 2014, her team finished as the second placer in women’s volleyball game. As a coach, she is definitely one of the finest as she was considered also by her players as their mother inside and outside the court. Coaching is a hard thing to do but for coach Ligoy it is her passion, passion when it comes to the sport she loves and passion when it comes to the things that she adopted to be with. When she was in the hard court, you can see her willingness not only to train her players and her entire team but also her eagerness and presence in each games to show her players what winning does mean for her.

Proving to this is her achievements in terms of coaching. She, together with the LSPU-bomberinas has won the gold medal in State Colleges and University Athletic Association (SCUAA) National Level last 2012 in Zamboanga. They also prevail in regional level of SCUAA held in Batangas City last year, 2013.

My father used to be an athlete when he was studying. It was a lucky throw of spear that made him bang into distinction and recognition. While watching senior javelin throwers from afar, my father gets interested with the sport and without undue hesitation, he dashed off; finally, he threw the spear with all his might. He had just thrown the spear far away from his senior’s javelin spear despite of his insufficient knowledge about the sport’s techniques and strategies. From this scene, the coach immediately eyed for this small man in place of the veteran players and became the youngest of his batch in the provincial meet to compete against other

of his college contenders. After that spectacle, maybe you were asking me now if my father became a professional javelin thrower. My answer was ‘no’. He did not. For most of the athletes inside the campus, only some of them pursue the career of being a professional athlete. As a student journalist, I came to realized how fast career on sports fades just like castle sand in the sea shore.

After it was built with hard work, patience and practice, will it just fade away and tarnish? What will happen to those striving athletes after college? Where will they used their talents on playing, if there’s no more competition?

What comes after?

As I was surfing the

internet about the professional athletes who retired from playing the sports they’ve endeavored, I saw how some of the netizens associated them with the word ‘depressed’, depressed individuals who cannot do anything than to play. They’ve trained very hard, work for outstanding stamina, run for endurance and break a leg for success but profit for none in the future. Because, once they graduated from their career, they died. It was once said that players die twice. First is when they retire from playing and the other is dying itself – you know literally what dying is. But I cannot comprehend to this allege. There are numerous sports which became popular here in the Philippines, Volleyball, badminton, tennis, and soccer are some of it. But I don’t know how to play any of these. I don’t play any sports. Maybe some of you were thinking that this is weird but I am an exception. I know the rules of some sports, but I cannot play it. I am contented on just watching and staring at the players during the game and sitting on one side. I accepted that I’m not born to play. There are people saying, “You should know how to play at least one sport because it is good for your health” and sometimes “You don’t get anything by just watching”.

I prefer not to respond because I know sports are good for our health but who told that there is no benefit in just watching?

With the goal to entertain ourselves, support our favorite team, remove stress and have fun with friends or family, we get several benefits. The question is, how could it happen if I was just watching?

There are benefits in our physical health. According to the research, 70 kilo grams can burn over 100 calories. I guess you are wondering how and why. In fact, while watching basketball or soccer match, I am not just sitting obtusely as most sports fans do.

I do sitting, standing, screaming and waving my hands to give

encouragement. I feel that I am part of the playing team whom I support. I clap and shout even if they didn’t notice me. Sweats are flowing out on my face and body. But, how about those who cannot attend live games but rather prepare to just watch it in television. Don’t worry because I could imagine how you scream, jump, clap and say ‘yes!’ if there

They are healthier in most aspect of life, including cardio vascular and neurological system, because they experience lesser stress than couples who are completely opposite.

I, as a student journalist, who watches and writes sports news needs to watch every unfamiliar game so that I could make news easily. It also gives

Lastly, watching sports tests my flexibility to watch and write different sports that I don’t even play.

Watching is not a just. I learned from what I’ve already watched. I improved from this.

Yes, I admit it, but I enjoy watching than playing.

I salute to those sports fans that go abroad just to watch Pacquiao, who shout for NBA tournament, for those who spend money to buy tickets for the game and for those who spend their spare time even though they are busy in study and work.

They sit, stand, jump, cheer, and scream just to show support for

their team. But, did those players ever appreciate it? It’s obviously not.

A team needs someone to watch over them playing and the same goes to the sports fans and watchers, they need something to watch over. Players, especially, underdogs, need their fans to motivate them to get the crown and the watchers also need players to motivate them in moving and exercising.

Now, I’m still watching but I’m not just watching on one side. I watch to be healthy, to support my favorite team and to get strategies from them because it’s my vision to play and try sports.***

COE edges CIT in basketball championship

After embittered by their first defeat in the crossover eliminations, College of Engineering (CoE) retaliated with heated hearts as they burned into ashes their rival College of Industrial Technology (CIT) 88-80 in a tough championship game at LSPU-SCC Basketball Court, August 8.

Hot start for CoE as Oquendo fired a three-point shot followed by another three from Abanto. CIT penalized a technical foul in the middle of the 1st quarter, an opportunity grabbed by CoE to continue their shooting spree. Oquendo registered a finishing three and

marked a double-digit lead, 31-18.

CIT managed to erase the double-digit lead just after the first minute of the 2nd quarter, 3126. This quarter do became too furious for Bengco as he made the score even in the last four minutes, all 36 but CoE still got the edge in the 1st half, 47-42.

It was on the 3rd quarter that signaled CIT players to rise with their flaming hands as they pacified CoE for a while, 53-49, with the help of a threepoint shot by Bengco followed by four consecutive two from Margallo but CoE still outplayed CIT in this quarter, 66-63.

Making their own way to the Football Finals filled with determination, the Blazing Blue Kickers from the College of Engineering (COE) edged against the Amateur Blockers from the College of Industrial Technology ending up with a very close fight, 3-2 that leads to the COE to be this year’s champion, LSPUSCC Soccer Field, Aug. 6.

Even though Geronimo Sacluti from CIT Blockers made the first goal, COE’s Nicole de Vera draw the score to 1-1 before ending the first half. In

time, Jai Parillo from the COE Blazing Blue Kickers came up with another goal that leads the score to 2-1, favor with COE.

CIT Governs in Track and Field

Despite of the unconditional weather, the College of Industrial Technology (CIT) studentathletes showed a great eagerness and their competitive skills as they conquered the two consecutive days of track and field events, Laguna Sports Complex, Aug. 5-6.

CIT reigned the said event as they garnered 20 golds, 6 silvers and 1 bronze. Leading the track events for the male category, Maloto, Garin, Mole, Sandoval and Atienza overcome 18 gold and 5 silver medals for all the track events. In female category, Catindoy bagged a gold medal in 1500 meter run.

Moreover, in field events of male category, Rogel and Latorgo had triumphed with 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal.

In the intervening time, College of Engineering (COE) dig up the second place as they earned 18 gold, 14 silver, and 9 bronze. Next on the list is College of Computer Studies (CCS) who grubbed up the third place gaining 5 gold, 1 silver and 13 bronze.

With a theme “LSPU: Creating a culture of oneness and responding to call for healthy lifestyle through Sports,” the Laguna State Polytechnic University Santa Cruz Main Campus officially opened its annual Sport Fest, August 4.

With clouds of calmness, a spectacle of the colors of aqua blue, maroon, black, yellow, red, orange, white, and gray, consisting of the administrative personnel, tournament managers, faculty coaches and studen athletes gathered at the University Grounds for the opening ceremony of the week long sports events organized by the Physical Education and Sports Unit chaired by Dr. Liza L. Bartolome.

Dr. Roberto C. Miranda, LSPU-SCC Campus Director, formally opened the ceremonies while Dr. Nestor M. De Vera, LSPU University President, focused his message on the aspects that sportsmanship must be developed in every students.

The occasion’s guest speaker, Hon. Benjamin C. Agarao, Congressman of the 4th District of Laguna, delivered his speech. He viewed the sport fest as “Isang Diwa ng pagkakaisa para sa ikakaunlad ng LSPU.” He also uttered that a 1000 sq. meters covered court will be constructed soon for LSPU students.

College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) ruled over other colleges after three day fight in softball competition of this year’s Intramurals held at the Laguna State Polytechnic University-Santa Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC) Soccer Field, Aug. 4-6.

Changes in the weather condition affected by a hot drenching weather in the opening of the game and the latter habagat enhanced by the typhoon Jose didn’t seemed to bother players from different colleges as the showed off everything that they’ve got.

A hot overcast sky set a festive atmosphere during the first day of softball for the College of Engineering (COE) and College of Industrial Technology (CIT) as they bombed powerful willows that made it crucial for the CCJE and College of Hospitality, Management and Tourism (CHMT) to strike back.

However, the muddy field of softball favors the players of CCJE as they had advanced a huge gap to smashed CHMT, 11-2.

Meanwhile, third day of the game starts with CIT cutting the edge of COE, 11-13 to 14-13 during the semifinal game. Afterwards, CCJE competes and wins against COE, 4-1.

At the very end a striking match between CCJE and CIT end the championship with 2-0 score. ***

College of Teachers Education (CTE), after defeating College of Computer Studies (CCS) in semi-final round, demolished College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) on a thrilling finals match, 15-11, and 1511 held at the LSPU- MultiPurpose and Gymnasium Activity Center. Aug. 6.

CTE kicked off the title as the new champion of this

year’s Sepak Takraw competition as they put their ‘Aggressive Play’ led by their captain Joshua Bañares who discharged the most powerful high kicks for the team.

CHMT tried to steal the score in the beginning of the game but the unstoppable CTE doesn’t let that happen and still won on the opening set. The second set became more exciting when both teams showed up their best games.

The crowd erupted as the two teams were answering both great attacks and solid defense to put the distance of the score close from the start.

But in the end, CTE dominates the game by showing great teamwork and styles of play.

“Our strategy is to be aggressive and always maintain the energy in every game.” said Bañares. ***

As the most beautiful day of the university was celebrated, couple from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) stood out and was crowned as Mr. and Ms. Laguna State Polytechnic University – Santa Cruz Campus held at the last day of this year’s Sports Fest, August 8.

CAS proved its worth again having Jai Jaimas, BS Math student, and Nicole Tiu, AB Broadcasting student, win this year’s titles, a back-toback victory from the last year’s search.

Tiu also bagged the Ms. Congeniality Award, and

captured the heart of the judges with her intelligent answer during the question and answer round .

Meanwhile, Jamias won the Best in University Uniform and Best in Barong Tagalog.

Thus, the College of Engineering (COE) proved this as they captured their historic 5-peat over-all championship in this year’s Sports Fest, Aug. 4 - 8.

For the past four years being on top, the Engineering warriors once again showed their supremacy as they garnered a total of 89 points, leading the race for the top spot of the standings.

They dominated most of the events such as Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Dance Sports, Chess, Lawn Tennis, and Swimming.

Following COE is this year’s second consecutive first runner up finisher, College of Industrial Technology (CIT) with their 49 total points, mostly came from Arnis, Athletics, Swimming, Taekwondo and Volleball.

Last year’s seventh placer College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) moved up to the third spot as they captured a total of 29 points where they registered a big win in Baseball, Futzal and Karatedo. College of Teacher Education (CTE) booked the third runner-up finished as they stunned the judges in cheerdance competition and recorded a total of 25 points.

This year’s fourth runner-

up position goes to the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) having a total of 24 points. Moreover, College of Computer Studies (CCS) moved down to the 6th spot as they only gathered 23 points in total.

Last three colleges are as follows: College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) with 12 points.

College of Busines Management and Accountancy (CBMA) tallied 11 points and College of Nursing and Allied Health (CONAH) having a total of 9 points.

The winners were determined through the point system where the first place is equivalent to 5 points, 3 points for second place and 1 point for third place in the individual sports event. While in team sports event they gave 10 points for the first place, 7 points for the second place and 5 points for the third place.

The College of Engineering (COE) with a theme of festival costume, high leaping jumps and pyramids bagged the 3rd place trophy; College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) with a theme of white and blue exotic feature, inspired with their powerful movements on dance got the 2nd place trophy.

They are one of the Pep Squads that made the whole crowd shout with joy because of their amazing stunts and routines.

Meanwhile, College of Teacher Education (CTE) showed clean routines and stunts, getting the 1st

place and beating the last year’s champion, COE.

CTE dancers jumped with joy while waving their college flag to the victory as they bagged the cheer dance championship.

Other competing teams included the College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) who made the audience shout with joy through their outstanding high lifting exhibitions, the College of Business Management and Accountancy (CBMA) who awed the crowd through their dance moves, and the College of Industrial Technology (CIT) in their high power performance.

snatched this year’s title, College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) hitters dethroned former baseball champion, College of Teacher Education (CTE), 10-2, as both teams played a breathtaking game of clinching homerun during the championship match held at the LSPU-SCC Soccer Field, Aug. 6.
